The response happening after a violent crash overnight last night between propalestinian demonstrators and counter protesters. Oh, my god. This is the. Chaotic scene that unfolded overnight. Counter protesters throwing fireworks and bricks into encampments and even attacked propalestine demonstrators. At least 15 protesters here were hurt. Police showed up about 2 hours into the incident. But i didnt make any arrests. School officials canceled all classes today in response tonight, many ucla students, they are accusing the school and the city of not doing enough to keep them safe. During this entire period and what i was the police stood by. On sidelines and last as me and my fellow protesters, what maced were struck with heavy plastic cones were struck with rocks, were struck with batteries. I was struck with firecrackers heavy, heavy. Our taylor. Campus safety left within minutes. External security, the university hired for backup, watched films and laughed on the side as the immediate danger inflicted upon us escalated. Ken and vicki, for weeks, demonstrators across the country and here in the bay area have been demanding the universities divest from israeli linked companies, students and faculty at Santa Clara University holding their own protest and teach. And today where a staff joined them. We spoke with organizers who say they felt it was important to put the event together and stand in solidarity, solidarity with palestinians. We want to also call for change on campus in terms of having a university divest from any investments they have supporting the iowa. Currently. We work closely with them to ensure that the goals of their activity could be met. At the same time, the university can ensure a safe environment given everything thats going on across the country. As i mentioned, some faculty and staff joined those student protesters over at u c berkeley today as well. This is the largest demonstration in the bay area with more than 100 tents outside sproul hall. Now a spokesperson for berkeley says there have been no disruptions operations and no violence. That every student no matter who they are. What they believe in. Has a right to feel. Respected. Welcome in the true sense of belonging. Some jewish students, however, disagree. They say their safety has not been a priority for several months. Tension on campus has gotten the attention of the bay area, Jewish Community relations council. The ceo says non students are often at fault for escalating situations there. And hes asking uc berkeley not to allow them on campus. Meantime, its been nearly a week since student protesters created an encampment at stanford university. Overall students feel its been peaceful, but some tell us the fear that could change one graduate student we spoke with says they have noticed additional security. New cameras for surveillance around the area that is supposed to be for free speech under i demand that is supposed increase safety. It now goes to the senate if its passed and signed into law, the bill would broaden the Legal Definition of antisemitism to include the targeting of the state of israel. Grant lodes joins us now from the newsroom. After talking with members of the citys used commission grant. Thats right, ken, the idea here is gaining support among Community Leaders to back another attempt to pass a measure that would grant. 16 year olds in San Francisco, the right to vote in local elections. Youth commission members. I talked to say the measure is meant to increase engagement overall in local elections. We began at a time when young people are still in high school. I still at home and not able to i have that support network and makes it much more likely that theyre going to continue being boat ads and make it happen. Much family and their lots. They have proven that they are ready to vote and they have the skills needed to vote. But thats the core cognition skills that they need. What the lived experiences that young people have, whether its taking care of family, whether its working up to 40 hours a week and paying taxes, they meet many of the threshold to be considered necessary in order to the voters. And they do have a direct stake in the outcome elections. So growing up. I been around a lot of youth organizers who are very in tuned their community, their leading rallies regarding school safety, addressing assault and harassment in schools and amongst and for lgbtq youth population. So they are very much in the front lines. The similar measures to lower the voting age failed to pass in 2016 and failed again. But by a smaller margin in 2020. So it would seem that this is gaining support. Now, whether this measure will appear on this years ballot in november is still being decided. The commission chair, the first person we heard from there, Ewan Barker Plummer tells me the decision to introduce the measure to the board of supervisors in San Francisco will be made soon in the coming weeks. The attempt to recall District Attorney pamela price moves forward, creating an ever more uncertain future for price. 61 of recalls nationwide in this time period resulted in removal. Cause an uptick, 6 or so. Puzzle to resignation before the recall. So they are very successful as a rule. Joshua spivak is a Senior Research fellow at berkeley laws, california constitution center. He says while recalls overall tend to be successful, its more of a 50, 50 split in california. Alameda county supervisor still have to decide whether to call a special election or let the recall happened during novembers general election. Spivak says that could impact the outcome. They seem to survive better when its a special election. In a statement prices, if a recall takes place, it should happen during the november general election. But she maintains the recall is illegal because the county registrar of voters didnt follow its own charter by allowing more than 10 days to count signatures and by allowing out of county residents to gather those signatures. But so far her campaign is not filed a lawsuit against the county. I will support this motion and hopes that occasion is filed. So he get clear direction its meeting tuesday. When this operation started accidental Overdose Deaths in San Francisco are up more than 40 . Between january and march of last year, 200 victims died from accidental overdoses, mostly from fentanyl and mostly in the tenderloin increased patrols in that neighborhood are apparently leading to more product being seized, but it might not be making much of a dent in death prevention. More than 42 pounds seized in the roughly 10 block radius. That is San Franciscos tenderloin district. The Governors Office and Law Enforcement agencies are celebrating what they consider to be a positive milestone in a Public Safety partnership. It was one year ago on may first 2023 when the governor authorized the california Highway Patrol and National Guard to crack down on drug dealing in the city. Their goal to target traffickers disrupt the dealers and sees the supply. Since then, the joint task force has issued more than 6200 citations arrested. More than 500 people recovered more than 100 stolen vehicles. And most importantly to their mission, captured nearly 700 pounds of fentanyl in total. Thats enough to kill almost half the country. City leaders are praising the progress made in the first year of this partnership. Police chief bill scott says the amount of fentanyl pulled off the street is, quote, unprecedented and that theyre going to continue to crack down on dealing in the statement. District attorney Brooke Jenkins says, quote, the resources that the governor provided San Francisco to ramp up our efforts to disrupt and dismantle open air drug markets has been invaluable working together. Were making a difference in the tenderloin drug conference cations maybe at unprecedented levels. However, when you look at drug Overdose Deaths, theres not much difference. This Partnership Program between agencies was initially announced just last year after San Francisco announced accidental deaths from drug use went up 40 between january and march of 2023. In that period, 204 people died from an accidental overdose in San Francisco. Thats according to the medical examiners office. Compare that to the same period this year. Deaths are down, but not by much so far this year, there have been just 5 fewer deaths from accidental overdoses. The Governors Office is also crediting the first year of this partnership for other significant crime statistic improvements in San Francisco. The Benicia Unified School district is facing a lawsuit claiming the district swept teacher abuse accusations under the rug. A former teacher Matthew Shelton has been charged with 7 counts of molesting a child. Attorneys say shelton worked in Elementary Schools for more than a decade. And when accusations surfaced at one school, shelton resigned and switch to another school. The lawsuit accuses the district of negligent hiring and adds that the principal was allegedly friends with shelton and his wife. Homeowners are scrambling to try and find new insurance to protect their homes. After state farm announced that theyre going to be dropping dem this summer.
