The Berkeley City Council is eliminating gender specific words from its municipal code and replacing them with gender neutral terms. Now, dozens of words will change. Some examples include manpower becomes human effort. Chairman changes to chairperson. Fraternal becomes social. And craftsmen is now artisans. Starting next month under the new ordinance a manhole will now be called a maintenance hole. The Berkley City Council passed the ordinance unanimously. Our time 6 45. San jose Police Released these photos and video of two Police Officers rescuing a man from inside of a burning van. The man did not want to be saved. The man who lives in that van parked on foxworthy avenue, was spotted last week by police. The van was on fire. The police eventually pulled him out of that burning van and they believe he was suffering a Mental Health crisis. He refused to get out. We saw smoke and by the time we were processing that, it was flames, by the time we were processing that, it was a rescue. Everyone that we deal with, with Mental Health issues is different. So sometimes reasoning with them works and sometimes it doesnt. And we try to do what we can to get them the help that they deserve. Those Police Officers pulled a man out just before the van exploded. It was loaded with propane, spray paint and fuel cans. The hair of the man was singed. He also suffered burns on his arm. San francisco has pulled a controversial measure to impose a new tax on startups filing to go public. It was known as the ipo tax measure. Under the initial proposal the tax would have been placed on the November Ballot to nearly quadruple the tax on corporations for stock based compensation to 1 1 2 . Some Business Owners oppose the measure saying that it would drive startups out of the city. Supervisor gordon mar says he plans to put a similar but more comprehensive measure on the ballot next year. We do have a moral obligation to create a more economically just city. San francisco has the highest income gap in the nation, the highest housing costs in the nation and the highest concentration of billionaires anywhere in the world. Supervisor mar says he plans to make adjustments to the ballot measure that require a simple majority to pass rather than a 2 3 majority. Our time is 6 47. The state Supreme Court ruled california has to use a 331 million settlement to help homeowners. The money was californias share of a 2012 settlement with five companies that foreclosed on homeowners during the last recession. Some of the settlement money was supposed to be used towards consumer education. Hot lines to help foreclosed homeowners and also for legal aid. The state finance department used the money to pay off state housing bonds and debts that were owed by state agencies dealing with housing. Governor newsom says hes disappointed by the ruling but the state will comply with that court order. Theres a dangerous heatwave making its way across the country. Beachgoers in georgia, they saved a group of beached whales, almost 50 of them, pilot whales swam into shallow waters along a resort community on georgias southeastern coast. Six of the whales stayed on shore. The beachgoers were out there pushing them back into the ocean. Two of the whales died but the rest safely returned to the waters. City officials in west palm beach, florida are using that popular kid song baby shark as detergent, trying to keep Homeless People from sleeping on the patio of the city owned banquet hall so city leaders are blasting baby shark and mini tacos on repeat through the night hoping Homeless People will leave the area to try to get some peace and quiet. Three women from salinas facing charges accused of stealing lottery tickets in sonothey are the same women behind similar crimes in those cities. Sheriffs deputies say early Tuesday Morning they responded to a report of a suspicious car at the bonos Convenience Store in schellville. The deputies say they saw the women swap out one license plate for a stolen one and then smashed a store window trying to break in. The alarms went off and the women quickly took off. It looks like they have been doing a string of these late night gas station breakins where they have been stealing lottery tickets. The deputies say they tracked down the women, they seized tools and heroin, plus a notebook filled with the addresses of gas stations around california. The three women are from salinas. Investigators say the suspects often go to another city to commit a crime, figuring the police are not familiar with a kitten rescued from an unlikely place in Solano County has a new home this morning and thats thanks to sheriffs deputies. Heres a kitten. It was found during a controlled burn in suisun city along cordelia road. Solano county deputies were there to help firefighters as they burned several acres of dry grass. I saw the other cats with two babies in its mouth going towards the bushes in the back fire area. I heard meowing in the bushes. We both kind of looked at each other and we are like, uhoh. We started breaking down the bushes and listening for the cat and crawling around, trying to find it. The deputies say the kittens are only about two or three weeks old. Look at that face. One of the deputies decided to adopt the kittens and take it home. San francisco firefighters are going back to school. They are learning spanish. The goal is to make sure First Responders can act fast in an emergency. Firefighters have access to Translator Services but really knowing the language can save time during life and death situations.
