Im julie haener working from home tonight. It has course is announcing new efforts to combat the virus as the number of cases across the country continues to rise. There are now more than 3600 cases here in the bay area. Santa clara county has the most with more than 1200 cases. California as a whole has 15,000 cases. Thats about 1000 more than yesterday and 349 people have died statewide. In the United States there are now more than 337,000 cases and nearly 10,000 deaths. The death toll is expected to jump this week. Today the president also announced new measures to try to fight the coronavirus. Reporter the federal government implementing new measures to help bolster the countrys fight against the coronavirus outbreak as the number of covid19 cases in the u. S. Continues to climb. This is an allout military operation that weve waged. President trump in the Coronavirus Task was delivering an update on the white house, outlining some of the new steps are being taken this week including stockpiling drugs that can help patients who have severe cases. Delivering more personal Protection Equipment to frontline responders. That material will be pushed out across the nation, delivered to hospitals, nursing homes. With more than 1. 6 million americans already being tested, more tests will be distributed this week which can get results in minutes. The briefing comes after the president and other Top Health Officials warn the country about the grim week ahead. This will be the hardest and the saddest week of most americans lives, quite frankly. This will be our pearl harbor moment and 9 11 moment. Hours later both President Trump and the Vice President mentioning there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are beginning to see the glimmers. When asked the president saying his administration is not sending mixed signals. I think we all know we have to reach a certain point, and that point is going to be a horrific point in terms of death, but it is also a point in which things will start changing. The british Prime Minister was admitted to the hospital today. His office says he is undergoing tests from the advice of his doctor. He was diagnosed with the coronavirus 10 days ago and is still suffering symptoms of. Prior to the hospital, johnson was quarantined in his residence. In a video message on friday he said he was feeling better but still had a fever read a complete disaster, that is what one muni official is predicting for tomorrows commute in San Francisco. Today they announced a Major Service cut that starts tomorrow. Greg ligands here now with more on the changes ahead. Reporter this pandemic has led to service cuts at transportation agencies across the area and starting tomorrow, muni says it will be cutting its service by some 40 , and it is unsure when some semblance of normal service will resume. Muni service already running thin is being cut to the bone. The agency announced it will cut service on roughly 70 roots affecting nearly every line of the city. Five workers have tested positive for covid19. The agency says service cuts are a Risk Management action to protect the health of drivers, staff and the public. We are expecting about 30 to 40 of our typical operators not being able to come to work this week. That means muni service on monday will be a complete disaster. Some lines like those near hospitals will continue to operate to help essential workers like hospital staff and low income workers that lack alternatives to get around. Other lines will be cut completely. What that means is on tuesday and wednesday we will start eliminating our low ridership bus lines in order to improve service on our key core doors like the 38, the 14, the eight or nine. They say their services will be fluid, and you can go to their website for updated information. In the north bay the smart train is also putting brakes on some service. Two weeks ago Weekend Service was eliminated. Now about half of the weekday schedules are being slashed due to low demand. The general manager is asking all riders to do their part by practicing physical distancing while the agency does its part. We washed the trains internally, twice a day, so every seat, every tray, every handle, the bathrooms, everything that a passenger could possibly touch we completely sanitize them in the middle of the day and again at night. Transit operators say its unknown when service will get back to normal. For now a muni manager whose job is to increase ridership is making an unimaginable request. Never thought i would say this, but please, please do not take muni if you have another choice of how to get around. Muni right now is only for essential workers and for essential trips. Muni says typical ridership is about 700,000 a day, that has now dropped to about 100,000. The agency also says they are losing about 1 million each week but they insist that these service cuts are not for financial reasons, they are for health reasons. Workers are still going to get paid. In Santa Clara County today Health Officials had two keywords for the public during an update on the coronavirus read stay home. The shelter in place order has been extended until may 3 and Health Officials say people need to take that order very seriously to keep themselves and others from getting sick. Officials also said about 80 of those who get the coronavirus will not become seriously ill. Even so the county is taking steps to make sure hospitals are ready to give the best possible care. We are taking these actions to slow things down. Thats giving our acutecare hospitals and other facilities additional time to prepare. So that when and if, the most vulnerable among us get sick and require hospitalization, that those resources will be available. Santa clara county Health Officials reported today 59 new cases of the virus with the total number of cases in the county reaching more than 1200. 39 people have died. Incredibly there are some people trying to take advantage of the coronavirus outbreak at least two restaurants in san jose were broken into in the past few days. Azenith smith talk to the owners and this could not have happened at a worse time. Reporter thats right these restaurants are staying struggling to stay open, now they have more to worry about. They are trying to warn others to stay vigilant. The suspect came up here and used his back foot and a crowbar to shatter the glass. s restaurant in san jose is only accepting to go orders during the shelter in place order or the owner cant help but be more guarded after thieves broken using a crowbar to smash a windowpane sometime sunday morning, three weeks into the stayathome order. Video captured a picture of one of the thieves on the front patio. We felt very violated. My family has a half a dozen of these restaurants in the area and we are all down 75 to 80 areas the suspect stole several tablets including one used for doordash. They also stole money from the Cash Register and a managers wallet. Inside the drawer was a wallet. He is not the only one targeted. I have friends, one owns armadillo willies, he is the regional manager, they broke in to his place on saturday, the place i left was broken into a month ago. A day before they were broken into the provided free dinner to Police Officers, dispatchers and firefighters. He estimates the theft and vandalism set him back at least 5000. We estimate anywhere between eight and 10,000 total between what they took and what they damaged. This bistro in downtown is closed for now and last thursday night to people kicked in the door to his back patio, broke locks and stole was the alcohol from the bar and electronics. The alarm system went off but the crooks were too fast. Surveillance video captured one thief read i feel like somebody is pouring salt on my wound after i got stabbed her whats going on in the last few weeks. Not happy about it but its a sign of the times. As for jacks restaurant, he is not leaving money in the restaurant overnight and says the burglary served as a reminder for other businesses to be on highend alert. These guys are out there, they are brazen and they will do what they want to do. Until we get tough, it will continue. And boast cases the owners posted about the breakin on social media and say police have strong leads. They question how long they will stay in jail given the state laws and the coronavirus pandemic. Breaking news now in the east bay where the chp is investigating a shooting on interstate 580 just after 7 00 tonight. The 28yearold man, a 23year old woman and a twoyearold child were taken to the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. The extent of their injuries is said to be moderate. Nadia is in Veterinary Care and expected to recover. The zoo says the animal was infected by a person who is caring for it who hadnt started showing symptoms yet. The cdc says that animals can become infected by the virus but scientists dont believe they can spread it to humans. We have two updates tonight involving the firing of the captain of the uss Theodore Roosevelt which had an outbreak of covid19. Today democratic president ial candidate said the firing of the captain was close to criminal and that he should have been given an accommodation and not fired for sounding the alarm on the covid 19 outbreak on the aircraft carrier. He was fired for allowing the complexity of the challenge to overwhelm his ability to act professionally. Also today the New York Times reported that he has tested positive for the virus. Fabric stores are seeing a surge in demand now that Health Officials are urging the public to wear a face mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Those face coverings are in short supply zone more and more people are learning how to sew them at home. Some fabric shops are rising to the occasion. I use soft cotton because it will be on your face all day. Reporter the owner of piedmont fabric shows us how to make a facemask. I attach the elastic. She uses three layers of 100 cotton. She says masks should be snug but breathable, i thread count fabrics work best. You dont have to know how to sew, just know how to follow instructions. She has been extremely busy with sales up about 30 with the majority of customers buying supplies to sew the masks at home. She says it was a customer from china who first warned her about the coronavirus months ago and told her to to stock up. They said in hong kong everybody is running out of masks. They cant even find it, it will come here, it will come here, so you need to start now. That was three months ago. She has been making masks ever since, giving them to friends and family and donating the rest. In concord the joann superstore is giving out free facemask kits, including fabric, elastic and stepbystep instructions. Each kit can produce five masks, customers pick them up curbside. This is a great gift and blessing that joannes is doing for the community. They launched a giving back campaign with the goal to donate enough supplies to make 100 Million Masks for healthcare workers. I bought 100 worth of fabric so i can have more to donate. Customer genevieve has made nearly 100 masks on her own. People need masks, im giving away masks to a lot of my friends and family and people who are working need masks. Public Health Officials say face coverings are not replaced social distancing or handwashing to be used as another tool to help stop the spread of covid19. More rain today, many parts of the bay area were hit with a downpour. This is the scene in oakland earlier today. As you can see it was really coming down creating puddles out there on the road. Martin joins us now to tell us if more rain is in the forecast. There is a little bit of shower activity out there right now, but very light compared to what we saw earlier today. Look at some of these rainfall totals from today. Santa cruz mountains with over 4 inches of rain in 24 hours. Some areas. Is little as a quarter, but most areas over an inch to an inch and a half. And the mountains, it is snowing pretty significantly and it continues. There is a winter storm warning in effect through tomorrow morning in lake tahoe. Once that goes away things will mellow out a little bit and we will get back to more springlike weather. But not before tomorrow afternoon evening, especially in the mountains. We will see a few scattered showers again tomorrow maybe even a chance of a thunder shower. As you take a look at the current temperatures, its pretty cool, some spots will be in the mid 30s. Might be a little frost in the morning, bay area bridges are pretty quiet tonight. Here is the computer model. Tomorrow morning, look at this little wave down in monterey, watch as it spins up. Thats an opportunity with the daytime heating, somewhere around 1 00, a thunderstorm possible anywhere in the bay area but especially centered toward san jose, morgan hill and gilroy. Then that low, that moves on and we are back in business for a springlike weather pattern that will take us right into the bay area weekend finding temperatures back into the mid 70s. With that, we are looking at tree pollens that will be trending relatively high. Not so much tomorrow, but once we get into thursday and friday. I mentioned this in all the newscasts, but if you are sniffling and sneezing, it might not be a cold or the coronavirus area the hay fever season is on right now so be thoughtful of that possibility. The five day forecast, scattered shower activity tomorrow, kind of midday, maybe a thunder shower, it will be hit and miss showers. You will be able to get your stuff done, but we will see a few scattered showers. In the rest of the week will be really nice with temperatures back into the 70s. Still ahead, we hear from for bay area mayors about their response to the coronavirus. What they say they are doing to keep residents safe. Local cities in the bay area were some of the first in the country to act when it came to the coronavirus outbreak, including Children Place orders. Our political reporter held a forum with the mayors of San Francisco, oakland, san jose and berkeley. To talk about their efforts to stop the spreading key people in their cities safe. We will hear from them for the rest of the hour about everything from testing to protecting the homeless, to how they are helping Small Businesses. Welcome everyone to this special ktvu townhall, im greg lee joined by mayors from three major bay area cities here to talk about each of their cities response to the pandemic. I want to thank you all for being here i know you all have a very busy schedule. I want to take you back to march 16, and now shelter in place orders come all of your cities were part of that. At the time considered the strictest in the nation but many have a sense followed suit. Santa clara county has the highest number of cases and the highest number of deaths right now. It was also your county Health Officer who is really on the forefront of this. Can you talk about the early discussion to take immediate action . Weve been having conversations certainly with the county about a whole host of measures including shutting down a lot of public events. As you know this is really a county decision but ive been very forthright about the need to act quickly to ensure we are not making mistakes, airing toward being too late. We know these are very severe restrictions being imposed, but they do no good if they are imposed a two or three weeks down the road. So, moving really at the speed of this virus is so critically important. Mayor breed, what does it mean to know, that the bay area is really one of the leaders in this . It means we are saving lives. I think ultimately that was our goal. It was of course a hard decision to make, a hard decision to explain to people why we were putting them in a situation where we are asking them to stay at home, especially people, hairdressers, barbershops, nails, and others, who this is how they make a living. It was definitely a hard decision to make that it was necessary. We had to do what was in the best interest of public health. That has been the guiding principle for me as a mayor here in San Francisco. As hard as these decisions are, we are fortunate in that we have Incredible Health experts who provide us with guidance on what is going to happen, and what is the best way to address it to really save lives. I think weve taking the steps to implement the right approach and people for the most part are complying. Its been very challenging, but we will get through this. It is hard right now, it will get even worse as weve heard, in terms of people who will be diagnosed and who will sadly passed away as a result of this. What we are trying to ensure is that we reduce that number as much as possible. This is why the steps, these very difficult steps we are taking are necessary. Mayor schaaf, we see very early evidence that these orders are effective mitigation and orders have been extended with new guidance for face coverings and masks, how hopeful are you that we will see positive results because of this . I am very hopeful. I know we all watch the numbers every day. For example, the graphs that the Governors Office released recently really demonstrated how powerful this shelter in place has been. When you look at the rate of infection that would have happened without shelter in place, it is staggering. And so as we see the numbers kind of study, we obviously see increases, we know we are not at the peak yet, but we do have very clear evidence that suggests that what we have done has saved lives, has bought time for our Health System to get ready for the surge. Its also bought time for the continuation of research, for improving the Testing Capacity which has been a huge frustration for all of us. Also to start developing the ability to determine whether people are developing the antibody, the herd immunity as they say, so all this time we are buying will make so much of a difference. I for one, and i know in our nightly call, the big 13 mayors have called literally every single night during the initial weeks of this crisis. We were concerned that the counties were not being aggressive enough. And so while that shelter in place was the first and it felt like it came very quickly, i think we all welcomed it. We would much rather be criticized for being too aggressive to save lives then for not having done everything we could to reduce suffering. Mayor, thanks for meeting us in this call, all of us are continuing to adapt to this situation. We still see people defying that order. We heard mayor breed talk about that a little bit, what is the message to your community as we step up these orders and enforcement in some cases. I think the message to the communitys plea shelter at home. You are doing this to protect your family and your community. In the city of berkeley weve had a Great Success in our residents complying with the shelter in place order. Its obviously creating difficulty for people, clearly the impact on our businesses is significant. I know many of us have launched a relief funds which are providing Financial Assistance to Small Businesses and nonprofits to keep them in business and to ensure they can get through this crisis. Really the most important thing you can do to help stop the spread of this virus is to stay at home. And while it may be in inconvenient, its essential. And we are having an effect in helping to fund the curve in california because we will not only be out there first and issuing these Children Place orders, but it is having an impact on reducing the spread. This has certainly been a local, state and national effort. Mayor, you and i talked a lot about the need for more testing and there is a huge backlog in the state. But how do we go about making a dent in that and what needs to happen to ensure that not only are those tests happening but they are getting processed. I think we need to see the federal government step up in a big way and come in here and process that we can ensure testing at a national level. So that we have that millions of tests we will need to do the identification, contact tracing, isolation, the quarantining that communities throughout the world have been able to successfully able to implement to contain the spread. Whether its taiwan, singapore or other places. We know it works and the alternative is that we keep the economy shut down and that is impoverishing aliens of residents. We have to quickly ramp up and i know the private sectors willing and ready to stand up but we need National Leadership that requires at the federal level the ability to use the law that is available, and has been made available since the korean war to commandeer privatesector resources and put those resources against this problem. Mayor schaaf, nurses, doctors and First Responders are working around the clock, we heard in some cases that nurses are getting protective equipment made out of trash bags. Are you getting this responders what they need to continue to battle this virus . I want to echo what mayor locarno said. We all have a new vocabulary word, ppe, which is masks, gowns, face shields, that our caretakers need to stay safe themselves. And if we are taking care of our caretakers, we wont be in trouble. There is an limited number of people trained to handle this crisis. If they are sick and removed from the workforce, that will have a cascading effect and weve got to be aware of that. I can say that in oakland, not only have we, and i know all the cities have scrambled, engaging in our own direct purchasing of protective equipment for First Responders. Its our workers that enter the 911 calls that go out to the medical call. And that has been crazy. They could have been avoided if the federal government did what they shouldve done. They still have not enacted the powers they have. So here we are competing against one another for ppe. I will say in oakland, im very proud that weve had the private sector step up to run the first city run testing site we began by providing testing for First Responders. Weve expanded that to First Responders in our neighboring cities including berkeley, and now, starting next week we will be extending that to other Critical Service providers, anyone in healthcare, even Grocery Store workers, any organization providing a critical, essential service and caretaking, we will extend our testing site to those employees. Its ridiculous that a local government has had to do this by relying on the charity of great partners like we have in our city. Theyve led this effort with tremendous support from blue shield california but it did not have to be this way, it should never be this way again. Mayor breed i want to move to the issue of protecting the homeless community, the city reported its first case of covid19 and a Navigation Center yesterday. You also opened up a center to help stop the spread. How plausible is it to put many in hotel rooms in the city . I think its definitely important to protect the most vulnerable and that is exactly what we are doing, it is a process. And i think people have to also understand, for example, at moscone west, where we will have 400 beds open, we were delayed by an additional day because of our inability to completely staff the shelter beds we have available. If this is not just something we can do. We have to protect the people who were actually working with the population as well and we have to make sure we have the capacity. We are expanding our capacity like never before in addition to getting access to these hotel rooms are. For example, when we take patients out of the hospitals, which is our priority, those are our covid19 positive, and move them into hotel rooms, we had to have support their 24 7. We have to make sure they are fed, we need to make sure they never leave those rooms. There is a whole system that has to be implemented that has never been implemented before when managing access to hotel rooms. Our focus has been the most vulnerable population. For example, we are providing the folks who dont need a bed, who need to be quarantined, we have already moved many of those patients out of the hospital and into those hotel rooms and its well over 100 people. We also are focused on the vulnerable population in our shelters. We have to make sure we have social distancing in our shelters and there is not sufficient room for the Current Population in that particular setting, and so we have to move people out of the shelter system, into places where they can be separated appropriately area thats been our priority. We are also focused on the un housed population, people who were over the age of 60, and people who have underlying conditions. So we are targeting those specific tabulations as well as healthcare workers. Those who dont want to go home to their families because they are on the front lines working with these folks. And we have to make sure that we, when we are dealing with this, its easy for someone to say weve got 30,000 hotel rooms in San Francisco, we should give everyone a room. Well, you know what, its not that simple. It requires a lot of money, a lot of capacity, and the other thing is, when you think about it, everyone is afraid of being infected themselves up. And when we are managing these shelters now, we have to maintain social distancing. We have to reeducate the people who are working with the population and the folks we are bringing into work in our shelters and in these hotel rooms and manage the situation. We have to make sure that that kind of systems that protect them are put into place when they are facing the public. So its more complicated, i think, than what people are trying to suggest that we do. And it is very costly. Our First Priority is to protect public health. So we are using our resources and we are prioritizing our hotel rooms. And the decisions that we make to do exactly that, its complicated. I know people want us to move faster, but unfortunately, we are moving as quickly as we can in the priority is of course saving lives during this pandemic. Greg, i think mayor breed is doing a great job during very difficult circumstances as we see in many places throughout the bay area. But as many of the large city mayors have been talking about, and doing, we are seeing opportunity in these crises, by that i mean we can move a lot faster and i think this is a great opportunity for us to expand our capacity of emergency housing by for example, buying those hotels that we are moving people into. At the time the motel owners may be quite interested in selling. We are going to need to expand the capacity because all of our cities will be facing the challenge, months from now, of literally pushing people back out in the street when we need to use the Convention Center again. So i think as all the large city mayors are talking about, we want to see federal and state partnership that will enable us, not simply to manage the moment, but actually expand capacity for us to address the crisis of homelessness that will continue beyond this. Mayor arreguin, governor gavin newsom a short time ago talked about project room key and says we will see more hotel rooms opened up to the community. Any idea what that look like in your city . Weve been speaking to all hotel and motel owners in the city. The county of alameda discussed last week in Weather Hotel owners would be interested in leasing rooms in the hotels to alameda county. Weve gotten some interest, and we will be working in partnership with the state to potentially lease the hotel in the city of berkeley to provide isolation for Homeless Individuals who are experiencing symptoms of covid 19. But i wanted touchup on something that mayor liccardo said. Because of the emergency and the orders that were issued on the local level, the statewide level will allow us to move much more rapidly to respond to this crisis and its giving thats much more flexibility and resources to be able to expand the shelter capacity and our housing of the most vulnerable in our Community Area and i hope after this crisis we can sustain those resources because we will likely see more people become homeless because of the economic crisis that was created as a result of this pandemic. We are working very actively to identify motels and hotels not just in the city of berkeley but in alameda county. To that point, when the governor, actually the first two hotels that the state least were in oakland. And one of them, we were sending lists of addresses up to sacramento. One is one weve been in conversation with about buying. Because we, again, want to prioritize the leasing of hotels that are willing to engage in a lease to own, because we do not want to be kicking people out onto the streets when this is all finished. And so the very first hotel in oakland that is being used for isolation for suspected, un sheltered residents, is one weve already been working on purchasing. And so it is likely to now be a permanent asset to deal with homelessness on a longterm basis. Mayor breed, that is kind of a segway for us to talk about the moratoriums that all cities and counties have enacted as you dont want to add to the Homeless Population when this is all said and done. How important is that and how do you ensure there will not be mass additions will become to the other side of this . I think thats why when we did a rent moratorium in the beginning, with the opportunity to provide people with six months after this is over, to pay back their rent. We also know that there may be a need for us to shift our existing resources and some of our Affordable Housing money to help deal with back rent or other issues. And so this is why i launched the Economic Recovery Task force, which, i announced it yesterday, with the goal of making plans for the future. What is going to happen . When this is over people will still be suffering financially. So what we are doing now, we are trying to do it now to support Small Businesses, divide people with money and food and make sure they dont get evicted. But what happens after this is over and there is a real strong need. So i think its going to require some changes in our priorities. We in San Francisco anticipate anywhere between 1. 1 and a 1. 7 billion budget deficit area that will require a lot of cuts, a lot of changes, a lot of reprioritization. So i think part of what we are hoping to do and what we wish we had, we wish we had strong federal leadership, which makes a difference. We are fortunate to have governor gavin newsom here in california working handinhand with all of us to try and deliver. And so i think it will continue to be a state and federal relationship that will help get us through this. We are going to develop a plan here in San Francisco to address recovery for those who are having challenges with their Small Businesses, for people who may have personal challenges, it is going to be rough, and we are not going to be able to deal with it on our own. We know the economy will be prudent for out of sometime. It would take a lot of work. You also announce the launching of grants for Small Businesses, mayor schaaf, can you touch on that. Sure, again i think its important that people are clear, its really an Eviction Moratorium that many of us have enacted. We legally cannot excuse people from their obligations to all rent. So i think its important people recognize the limitations on government. What we can do though is try and start raising dollars to help people make those rent obligations as well as delay, put off, not allowed penalties and fees, things like that, to help all of us spread the pain out a little bit during this crisis. We did launch our Small BusinessEmergency Fund as part of our philanthropic effort. Today i just learned we are raising the total amount of grants through that to half 1 million. We already had 395 applications. 80 have been from owners that are people of color. And a tremendous percentage were actually some of our lowest income residents were also business owners. These emergency grants were very much targeted for low income business owners. And we were pleasantly surprised at how many people were at 30 of the area medium income. These are extremely low income individuals who also owned businesses. Housekeepers, hairstylists, people who own a business but are struggling themselves to make ends meet. And so so we are excited that these initial grants are going to some of our most deserving, not just businesses, but also residents. Mayor liccardo, Silicon Valley is in the same strain. Can you talk about how you might recover on the back end of this recovery asked to make ive been heartened seeing the commitment. They are willing to help families without a paycheck. And now the struggle is just more intense. The bad news is weve had more than 7000 families fill out applications and we know we will simply not be able to fund raise to meet the need because it so much greater. We also have a small fund as well for Small Businesses and we provide small 10,000 grants to businesses as well. And we will just keep hustling. We will have a telethon in a few hours as well to try to raise more dollars. But the reality is, as a community, we need to recognize the really common responsibility we have. When we became the first of the country to announce an Eviction Moratorium a lot of landlord said of course we are going to do that, we wont kick people out. Some complain but even those landlords are recognizing that if you evicted somebody, nobody behind them will pay the rent. Select all except the fact that evicting people will not solve any problems. Lets recognize together that we are responsible for one another. And if there is anything we learn through this difficult time is how connected we are to one another. Even the physically separated, this pandemic shows how dependent we are on one another and we need to help each other. Mayor arreguin, you talk about efforts in your community, especially for Small Businesses that continue to struggle during this. I want to acknowledge mayor liccardos leadership during this pandemic, his leadership was really what inspired our respective cities and put pressure on our governor to adopt a declaration, which he had issued last week. So we will take all of our collective efforts to get through this crisis, and to get through it as a region. Our region is about great leadership and we were one of the first regions to issue a shelter in place order, and as a result many states have followed our leadership as well. In berkeley, we launched a relief fund which the city provided 3 million to capitalize the fund. We are working hard to raise contributions from businesses and residents, weve had thousands of donations from people, from as little as five dollars to as much as 50,000. We are deeply appreciative that our community is stepping up and working to support Small Businesses and residential areas that are facing eviction during this time. Im inspired by how our communities have stepped forward and provided great leadership. This has been a very challenging time because although we had to be physically distant its been a Great Unifying moment. So for anyone who wants to donate please go to berkeley relief fund. Org and we are continuing to provide as much assistance as possible knowing that those loans will take time to get into peoples pockets. I wanted to add, we have a lot of great resources here in San Francisco as well. We launched a fund to provide low interest loans and grants to our Small Businesses, we launch that yesterday. So if anyone needs information, whether you are a Small Business, individual, looking for help or resources. Go to oe wd. Org, weve been doing a lot of great work here in San Francisco, and as some of the other mayors pointed out, we have private sector partners, people who are very generous in contributing and helping to support the need to try to get money into the hands of people who may not have access to unemployment insurance, who may not have access to any other resources. We want to say that its important that we provide those resources, and we want people to do everything they can to support and uplift one another. I also want to say, for example, we have a fund for artists in particular, its a 5 million fund specifically for artists. A friend of mine told me about a gentleman she was talking to said im going to apply for the find and she said well, wait a minute, are you going to be evicted . Dont you have a situation, arent you in a situation where you dont need anything, basically. You have a husband who takes care of you, you are not going to be evicted, you have food on the table. This money, if you are not in any need of this money. And he said you know what, youre right, i dont need this. The fact is that money will not help every artist in San Francisco. What we want people to do is realize that and be respectful that if you dont need it, dont go after it. There are so many people out there who really need this money. We want to make sure that we reach those who need it the most. To that point, we are encouraging people, if you can pay your rent, pay her rent. There is just a cascading effect of everything that is going on right now. We recognize that the income disparities, racial disparities, all of those things get worse in moments of crisis. And so we really do have to stay mindful. Those of us who can help have got to help as much as possible. Youve all given really remarkable examples of the Community Coming together. I want to give us a chance, as we talk through these major issues that your cities are dealing with, to kind of end on a positive note. Throughout all of this, and we have certainly been reporting some of it, we have really seen some remarkable humanity from the community. I love each of you to maybe share an anecdote if you can come about the good happening in your communities. We will start with you mayor arreguin, just to give them hope to your community as we deal with this difficult time. Im inspired by how our community has pulled together and its really been looking out for everyone including the neediest people in the community. Just an example, not only people who have given to the relief fund, but people are selling masks to provide them to First Responders. Businesses that have completely changed their operation to focus now on developing personal protective equipment. Distillers that are developing hand sanitizers to increase access to hand sanitizers or our First Responders and staff. Weve had to adapt, and weve had to change the way we do things. But, despite that, we are seeing businesses and residents really think about the needs of not just themselves, but of their community. And i really think despite the challenges, that we will be stronger and more resilient in the region will be more resilient after we get through this. Mayor liccardo. I think we are seeing what makes us so incredibly unique as a community. People are just rising. I remember getting a call late when i from the head of blue energy saying you know we dont do ventilators, we make energy cells, but ive got a lot of folks on the line who were quite interested in figuring out how we can help renovate all these broken ventilators because we think there are thousands of them in hospitals across the country. We just need to find somebody that can help test them and certify them and make sure they are safe. I connected him to it dr. Open in stanford, and everyone just jumped in and within 48 hours, he had the Assembly Line rolling of workers who werent just doing it because they were told. These were folks who were working overtime and volunteering their hours, just to try to get ventilators in place. To be able to address the critical need in the hospitals throughout the state. So if was so heartening for me to be able to go to the factory and be able to meet, obviously at a safe distance, many of those who are working long hours. Just to celebrate this moment where so many people from different walks of life came together and said this is a critical moment, lets rise to it. Mere breed. Ive got a note taped next to my mailbox. It was from a neighbor who said she was our block captain. And if i needed anything, whether it be groceries, anything from the pharmacy, or just someone to talk to, with her email, her cell phone number, and to reach out for anything. I got a little choked up because i thought wow, how amazing are the people of San Francisco. Ive heard so many stories. A friend of mine whose mom, basically someone called her and said i know you are a senior, part of the vulnerable population and you cant leave. Im here for you, we can drop off groceries, whatever you need. Im hearing stories where people are just going outside of their apartments at a safe distance, clapping for the healthcare workers. It just really is bringing out the best in people. And, i really appreciate that. Because, in times like this, it is necessary. And its necessary for us to put positive energy in the air. For us to realize how blessed and fortunate we are. And that this is temporary, and we will get through it. But it is going to require a lot of patience, a lot of understanding. A need to just really focus on the very best of who we are as people. And how, when we come together, at a safe distance, there is nothing we cant accomplish. So i am really hopeful about the future, and this will continue to be a difficult time, but we should be so proud that here in the bay area, because of our quick action, there are countless lives that have been saved. We will look back at this time in history and be really proud of the actions we took. Im grateful to be here and grateful to be working with some incredible mayors throughout the bay area, and we will get through this. We will come out of this stronger and better than ever. Mayor schaaf, i will let you close us out. Thank you, those are a lot of hard asked to follow. I just have so much deep gratitude for the resilience and grace of our entire community and what they are showing up within this moment. Some specific stories, Oakland Spirits Company stopped distilling vodka to start making hand sanitizer. Family laundromats in the fruitvale district, they were too concerned about their workers and the public that was coming in. Laundromats are considered an essential service, ray. Hygiene is very important during this moment. But they decided to switch their entire operation to actually doing emilys laundry for them. Wash, and fold. They are not charging Senior Citizens anything for that service. We see Grocery Stores delivering for free to seniors in their neighborhoods. And i just want to end by really giving a huge shout out to Public Servants. Our workers, and it is not just the firefighters, the Police Officers that have been responding to your calls every day, knowing they are putting themselves in tremendous jeopardy with this disease out there. But, just the moments of creativity. My head of parks and recreation designed an entire childcare protocol for our First Responders who might need childcare because schools are shutdown right now. The head of my Animal Shelter came up with an entire protocol to take care of pets of our homeless citizens that may need to be moved into isolation trailers or Isolation Hotel rooms and not be able to take their beloved pets with them. These are the kinds of creative ideas, and i just see my city workers working around the clock, all weekend, to try to help our Community Get through this crisis in as good and together and healthy way possible. So to all the Public Servants out there, to all the government workers, we see you, we are so grateful for your continued commitment, and again, just let us as a community continue to exhibit our best values as we move through this crisis. Thank you, mayors i want to thank all of you for the work you are doing for our communities and to take you for taking the time to meet with us. I think its important for our viewers to hear directly from you. We appreciate your efforts and we hope you continue to stay safe and stay healthy. Thanks greg, stay healthy, too.
