Organizers say many people have been moved by the girls death. We wanted to hold space. We want to definitely have a place for people to come to grieve, to hear, to hear whats happening and to be present and to be with each other. So far, officials have not released any further information on the family, their names or where they live. The driver has been identified as 71 year old Karen Cartagena as ktvu christian captain reports, pedestrian advocates say this crash should have never happened. The victim, a four Year Old Girl being pushed in a stroller with her mother and father in the intersection of fourth and king streets. The girls father also struck was last reported to have life threatening injuries in the hospital. The mother reported to be physically unharmed and the driver remained on scene and was arrested. Police say drugs or alcohol dont appear to be a factor. Pedestrian Safety Advocates are saying this case with such a young victim is tragic. We lose a lot of people every year in traffic crashes, especially pedestrians. But this is a four Year Old Girl and its just its not right. Marta lindsey from walk sf says the little girls death was the 11th of the year. Lindsey says the intersection of fourth and king is already on their radar as being a dangerous one, with pedestrians coming and going to sporting events and traffic rushing to get on and off. Interstate 280. This has happened before. Crashes are happening here. All the time. And so those are the streets that need the most aggressive treatments by the city to really make it possible for someone to cross the street safely. The Organization Says that this intersection, king street, is broad, sending a signal to drivers that they can speed up and having two right turn lanes to the freeway is a recipe for disaster. Walk sf says the city needs to make changes here to make the intersection safer, reduce the lanes, know turn on red so theres just reducing all kinds of opportunities for conflict. Podesta means get there, turn drivers get their turn. Giants fans Linda Schaefer and carmel stanavich were at the game tuesday night and saw the aftermath of the deadly crash. They say they know firsthand how walking these streets to and from the ballpark can be dangerous. I say it every game we come to too much speeding. What is the speed limit . I ask an officer today. New at ten tonight, six car is stolen in a matter of minutes from an oakland auto shop. Oakland police are now investigating what is being called an organized car heist. Ctvs dave detailing joins us now from oakland. After speaking with one of the victims, dave. Good evening, julie. Well, this all happened early saturday morning. Speaking to one driver. She says she thought she was dropping off her car at what she thought was a secured business. Turns out she was wrong. It was burglarized and now shes left without a car and a whole lot of paperwork. At 730 saturday morning, i got a phone call that said they were sorry, its not the service call you want to get from an auto repair place. The manager of the firestone told Anita Waldron her 2016 Subaru Outback was stolen from this broadway location. A apparently she wasnt the only victim. They had crashed into the front window to get in and then unbolted the roll up door and just drove out with six cars. The window is now boarded up and fragments of glaanita believes s car heist was planned. It would have taken at least six people to drive six cars out. To make matters worse, waldron says, firestone has no security cameras in the lobby. She says she should have listened to her gut when she originally took the car in for a headlight repair and that security felt off. Id asked them about secure pretty just a few hours before i actually thought, oh, im not surprised. Firestones corporate owner, bridgestone americas, sent us a statement saying in part, safety is our top priority. When we became aware of the situation, we contacted local authorities and worked cooperatively with them as they invested located. The business break in was just one of many storefronts damaged saturday morning. Ktvu reported. A number of vehicles were taken in the immediate area. Some of them used to ram exterior walls and doors around the same time. Waldrons car was taken. Anita says she watched security video. We aired. I was looking at all the cars that happened to be behind her and the footage that one of the businesses had that was showing another car being backed in into the business. But it wasnt my maroon subaru. She doesnt know where her car is and at this point considers it a total loss. She says she lost her car to oaklands growing crime problem. It really, really frustrates me that we cant get a grip on it and we cant live a respectable life here in oakland without always being on edge of whos going to be next. And anita is working with her Insurance Company as well as firestone, on a replacement vehicle. I did reach out to Oakland Police to see if the theft from firestone as well as those other crimes to nearby businesses, are connected in any way. We have not yet heard back. Julie dave yeah, you tried talking with management there on site. Did they say anything about the security of the other cars that are being serviced there . Well, right now, when i went inside, management couldnt talk to us directly. They forwarded us to corporate, but i did hear them talking to other customers over the phone. One person wanted to bring down their tesla. The employee said, thats not a good idea. We were just robbed and said to that customer over the phone, theres no way to secure that video, that vehicle at least not until a new safe for those keys is installed. So they are working to address that security issue right now. All right. Dave dowling reporting for us tonight in oakland. Thanks, dave. Well, a series of car robberies took place in San Francisco this afternoon. This is video footage, rather, from fishermans wharf. A witness captured a suspect quickly jumping out of a white lexus and taking items from the back seats and trunks of nearby vehicles. You can see the suspects steal multiple backpacks from a handful of parked cars. The suspects vehicle did not have a license plate and has still not been identified. Another effort to save days coming up later in the newscast, the meeting held in oakland where fans discuss how to keep the team from moving to vegas. We are tracking a few raindrops just to the east of here. Well take a peek at the radar. Well look at the live camera and well also take a peek at the longrange model. Ill see you back here. Also ahead tonight, it will be a long road to recovery for people on maui. Coming up in 90s, how the state is stepping in to try to help fire survivors students traffic along a major highway is running again and cleanup crews have begun clearing ash and debris in some areas. Maui Officials Say they will offer residents Financial Assistance to help them rebuild. Im authorizing waiving property taxes for this year, and that includes structures as well as land. The taxes that have already been paid will be refunded to those families again, to help them to regain using that to help them recover through this tragedy. President biden and the first lady are expected to visit hawaii on monday to see the damage firsthand and to offer their condolences. Search and rescue teams continue to find more fire victims with the latest death toll. Theyre now standing at 110, more than 1000 people remain missing. And as Matt Napolitano reports here, this comes as fema has opened the first Disaster Recovery center to provide help for survivors. I cannot do anything. We never said nothing, nothing at all. An emotional day in the maui resort town of lahaina. A highway into town reopened wednesday, allowing residents inside for the First Time Since last weeks deadly wildfires. For many, it was a sobering moment and a reminder of all that was lost. The only clothes that i have is my uniform. And thats it. And my car. While residents comforted each other, search crews and cadaver dogs continued combing the area for victims. The death toll has now surpassed 100 people and authorities expect that to continue rising. Fema even sending more dogs to help with the search. This is a really difficult search operation. The agency also announcing its opening its first Disaster Recovery center on maui to help with disaster relief. This as aid from around the nation and the world continues pouring in. The most recent is a 2 million aid donation from south korea. Id like to express my deepest condolences to the people of maui. The fires destroyed more than 2200 structures in the area, causing an estimated 5. 5 billion in damages. While its unclear how long the recovery will take. Officials have vowed to do all they can to help the community. I can tell you its going to be a long and costly recovery, but much of that work will be done here with our local people. A mobile morgue unit has also been set up in maui to help with the long and difficult process of identifying victims. So far, just a handful of people have been named in new york. Napolitano, fox news. And you can scan the qr code thats on your screen right now. If youd also like to help in the Recovery Efforts on maui. East bay mud conducted two cleanups this week as Illegal Dumping problems are starting to affect residents, money and health. East bay mud says this weeks sweep cost 77,000. Workers pulled three cars and loads of trash from two known dumping areas right off pinehurst road near the upper san leandro reservoir. The utility district says it spent more than 280,000 on these cleanup efforts since 2021. Last month alone, it says eight cars and eight tons of trash were removed from a watershed. And county Officials Say water runoffs from these illegal dump sites can contaminate wells and groundwater has hazardous material. All the things that you would find in a dump and why we have designated dump sites are happening here in our watershed where we hold our water. This land and this water supply is too valuable. Dont bring your trash here. This is what we drink, what we live off of. Authorities say it costs much more to clean a dump site than it costs residents to properly dispose of their trash. San Francisco International airport plans to voluntarily reduce electricity use during anticipated energy shortages. Airport officials outlined a plan today to support the state grids emergency flex alerts. The alerts are issued when extremely hot weather drives up electricity use and shortens the Available Power supply. Sfo will reduce the frequency of the air Train Service from four minutes to every eight minutes. It will also cut back on lighting and electricity use throughout the airport and temporarily deactivate ev charges in parking garages. Okay. This pattern has kept the humidity around. Its given us some thunderstorms. We had a little thunderstorm activity and a few sprinkles out in livermore up over Mount Hamilton around 5 00 this afternoon. We had a thunderstorm producing some some hail or not hail, but some lightning and thunder. And then this is the pattern. So this is today all those lightning strikes, all those weights all the way over to cape mendocino. So the flow is like this. Its the opposite of what youd expect this time of year in terms of youd expect the High Pressure flowing like this. But this low sits down there and its not going away anytime soon. So this flow continues and the potential for this type of activity continue as well. Some scattered showers right now in sacramento, stockton, heavy downpours there. And its drifting this way now. Maybe a few sprinkles will show up in pittsburgh, maybe a few up in santa rosa. But its not out of the question really. Any day this week. And as we go into early next week, the potential for a much more significant moisture plume from a dying hurricane. It doesnt mean the hurricane gets here, just means all the leftover moisture is that thing falls apart as it comes north. Its going to get sucked into that flow. I showed you that shows up on sunday night into monday and tuesday. And that could be potentially disastrous for the southwest, the desert southwest. I could see six inches of rain. Some of the models are forecasting we would see rain. We would see thunderstorms if it came our way. Lots to change or lot can happen between now and then. So well wait until we get closer. But in the meantime, hot today, humidity is a little bit higher than were used to, so it seems sticky. Tomorrow, not as hot, low pressure kind of bumps up against the coast. That same low gets closer and thatll cool us a few degrees, although itll keep that flow going. So tomorrow, not quite as hot as today in a general cooling trend in terms of temperature, humidities are going to stay relatively mild, moderate to high. Ill see you back here in a few minutes. All right, bill, well see you then. Thank you. As fans get together to try to keep the team in oakland. The former mayor among the group. Also, the vote in the east bay over whether one school should change its controversial mascot. And new questions about Election Security after the latest indictment against former president donald trump. Tonight at 1030, we talked to bay area Election Officials about what theyre doing to keep ou john fisher got his brand new shiny stadium. Our governor vetoed a Universal School lunch bill for kids. The group gathered in downtown oakland to hear about an effort in nevada called schools over stadiums. Nevada educators argue that 380 million earmarked for a ballpark would be better spent in the classroom. Former oakland mayor jean quan is among the supporters. As fans. We want the as to stay here. Wed prefer just like the majority in the vans that they can take an Expansion Team and not take the as. And at the same time that nevada takes care of its kids. The Group Schools over stadium says its committed to pursuing every possible path to stop the use of public funds. In nevada to subsidize the stadium that includes a possible ballot measure or potential litigation. The mt. Diablo School District tonight voted to change the controversial minutemen mascot at one of its high schools. They dont feel represented with that mascot. So without being represented, they dont feel included. And the pride that you guys feel. So i, i, id like to change the mascot to something that they could feel pride in. And trust in. Concord high school is now officially represented as the bears after School Board Members voted 4 to 1 in favor of the change. The mascot is named after revolutionary war soldiers and its logo shows a man holding a gun. Students and staff who pushed for the change say the minutemen mascot is offensive. Others say it has important historic significance. Calling the minutemen derogatory is shameful. These are our countrys first soldiers, right . They protected us. So calling them derogatory is really just an embarrassment. This is the second time the school board has voted on whether to change the minutemen mascot, a former resolution to switch to the bears failed to pass in a school board meeting. Back in june. San francisco is allocating money for a program to train black educators. The San Francisco department of Early Childhood is partnering with the dream Keepers Initiative to fund this program. Is that trump and the 18 other defendants go to trial on march 4th. Meantime, the Sheriffs Office said all of the defendants are expected to be booked at the Fulton County jail. The da says the 19 defendants have until next friday to turn themselves in or face arrest. The indictment includes charges of election fraud, and that is raising concerns and questions about Election Security and integrity as the nation heads into the next president ial race. Jana katsuyama investigated what california and bay area Election Officials are doing. She joins us now live with the story. Jenna. Mike, state and local election experts told me today that most bay area counties use the same company as georgia dominion Voting Systems. But they say there are key differences in the systems. And in california there are extra protections and protocols put in place leading into the 2024 elections. The georgia indictment lists charges of conspiracy to commit election fraud, computer theft, trespass and invasion of privacy, stating that trump attorney sidney powell, as well as coffee county, georgias election director misty hampton, and two other Trump Supporters illegally accessed voter data and the dominion Voting SystemSoftware Data in an attempt to impact the 2020 president ial election. On that alleged breach has sparked concern about Election Security as the nation prepares for the 2024 election, according to the secretary of states website in california, eight of the nine bay area counties, except solano county, used dominion software. We contacted californias secretary of States Office to ask about security in georgia. It was 5. 2 was the Software Version number that was used. And here in california, we use a california specific software. State election Officials Say they have had conversations with dominion and that california has some of the nations toughest requirements for Election Security protocols. We have source code review. We have accessibility testing, functional testing. The systems are air gapped. They cant be connected to the internet, nor can they even have the capability to connect to the internet. Kristin conley, the Contra Costa County clerk and registrar of voters, says bay area Election Officials are preparing with cybersecurity precaution. We have our it team that is regularly attending calls by the fbi so that we understand what the current Cyber Threats are. Conley says physical access to voting equipment is tightly restricted. Just to give you a sense, i am the top official in my department. I do not have. I have no reason to be in that tabulation room without the staff that actually knows how to run it. Election officials are also meeting with Law Enforcement to protect election workers. Legal experts say although the charges are in georgia, they have broad implications. Nationwide i mean, this clearly was a National Effort involving a lot of different people operating in a lot of different places to try to undo what all the courts agreed was a valid election. Thats really kind of unprecedented. The Contra Costa County clerk says she is planning to put out an information sheet for the public to address some of these questions about dominion and the state says that they have been sharing californias strict election protocols with other states to help improve security. Like all right, jenna, thank you for that. The georgia case is just one of several trials that the former president is facing. Special counsel jack smith has proposed a january 2nd trial date for the case over conspiring to overturn the 2020 election. Im showing you the long range model here. I want to show you. You see the low and how its pulling everything into it. This is on sunday. Im just going im rocking it back and forth. So that low is whats happening now. Thats why we had the showers down in Livermore Valley and then the thunderstorm up on hamilton. But watch what happens is we get into sunday and monday. Look at this moisture, same pattern. But now an actual right now its a Tropical Storm. Hillary is going to get sucked into this. Its not going to be a Tropical Storm. But the moisture from that dying Tropical Storm is going to get sucked in or as the models suggest, it sucked in. And that would be a lot for us. That would be on sunday, monday into tuesday. So well keep an eye on that. Ern is the same pattern thats bringing us this activity. Right. You can see the last 12 hours, all the lightning strikes, lots of little spot fires here and there. And the problem with these with all these little fires that cal fires getting is theres so many of them, theyre not big and its not windy. Its not a horrible fire conditions. But theres so many that the crews are running thin because theyre chasing down these these hotspots. This that was a thunderstorm a few hours ago. Now its in sacramento and its showers working its way out into pittsburgh, out towards santa rosa, Rincon Valley area. Maybe a few sprinkles from this. It shouldnt be much more as it dies down. But this type of pattern is what were up against, pretty much the entirety of this, the finish of this week into early next week. So something to think about. It was hot today. It was humid today, not as hot tomorrow. Theres the low. The low continues to rotate not just tomorrow, but into friday, saturday, sunday and monday. In this pattern, again, little Tropical Storm hillary is going to could be a hurricane. Its going to fall apart as it gets pulled north. And then all that moisture is coming our way. Thats on saturday. Could come our way. Thats on sunday, monday and tuesday. Thats the big story. You can hear a lot about that. The other big story is all the lightning strikes weve seen around the Northern California and crest of the sierra nevada. Heres the model for you. See the flow. Here we are tomorrow morning. Theres our fog, moisture. Still, even though you dont see clouds, its high humidity in this area as well. And then you see the thunderstorms due to that high humidity pop up in the afternoon and a little bit up here in Del Norte County or towards Del Norte County. Then heres friday morning. A few thunderstorms in the afternoon. And then the real thats thats a limited amount of subtropical moisture when the big plume potentially gets here, thats going to be a whole nother deal. Some of the rainfall estimates down in the deserts of Southern California is half a foot of rain. If that if it all transpires. So its got a long way to go. But youre going to hear a lot about it this week. You probably already have. So heres tomorrows forecast. Slightly cooler than today, not as well. Probably about as human as today, maybe 35 or 40 humidity, but very warm, still kind of sticky. And that continues this pattern is going to continue with this sort of a setup. So sunday, monday, sunday night into monday and tuesday is going to be interesting. And actually the next few days is going to be interesting, especially around lake tahoe. Copy that. All right, bill, thank you. San francisco unified School District opened the classroom doors today.
