I believe that he should be reinstated. And what happened with showed that he dot support Police Accountability one by one. Oakland is stepping up to the mic at thursdays Police Commission town hall weighing in on the february firing of chief Lauren Armstrong and who theyd like to see take the helm of the department. What next . Among them, gail harbin and her husband, jerry. They were wrong for firing chief armstrong in the beginning. They did not allow due process before they fired him and they should reinstate him because it was very premature. Lauren armstrong will be back. Armstrongs ouster by oakland mayor xiang tao in february coming after a probe criticizing the former chiefs handling of misconduct investigations involving his officers. But that decision coming under intense scrutiny after an appeal by armstrong cleared him of any wrongdoing. So far, mayor tao has defended her decision, a position backed by jenny ziliak in the audience. Our democracy is in trouble right now because we elected this mayor. We had a good turnout election. We elected this mayor. And shes being undermined by the same group of people is in that room every chance that they get and their job is the Police Commission is not to undermine the mayor. The Police Commission had been expected to put forward a list of potential candidates for the chief job at thursdays meeting, but in protest of their leadership, several members chose not to show up, preventing a quorum. I would say that that given the circumstances and that he was doing an excellent job, that and that he was fired wrongfully, that he should be entitled to his job. But it is not my decision to make. We would need to vote to do that. And hence the political theater that is preventing us from voting. Police say for two weeks they tracked the ghost town gang after a carjacking. Officers set up surveillance in west oakland and found 15 people with firearms, three machine guns and nine semiautomatic pistols are now off the streets. We will take and we are unafraid of taking Enforcement Actions on those who continue to engage in violence and engage in traumatizing our communities. We hear, you know, the cries for help from the community, and were taking it seriously and were doing something about it. Officers were called to the velvet Cannabis Store on Sunrise Drive around 330 in the morning. This was on august 18th on a report of a burglary. Several people can be seen there in the parking lot. The Body Worn Camera footage shows four martinez officers opening fire on a blue infiniti after police say the driver hit one of the officers. Police also say the infiniti was reported stolen out of livermore. The mayor said the family of the man who died, 20 year old taman wilson, privately viewed the footage release. Regards of how someone interprets seeing. Watching this footage comes with the tragic realization that a young man has lost his life and a family is grieving a loaded ten millimeter handgun was found in the front passenger area of the car, but the familys Attorney Says wilson himself was not armed. The department of justice, as well as the Martinez Police department, are investigating the shooting. Work place safety investigators were called to a San Francisco job site today after a utility worker was killed. Ktvus Christien Kafton tells us rescuers found the man dead after the trench he was working in collapsed. The first calls to 911 started coming in shortly after 10 a. M. A worker trapped about eight feet underground in a trench that had collapsed. Fire crews rushed to the scene with heavy rescue and urban search and rescue equipment, including a canine that confirmed that a person was trapped under eight feet of sand, dirt and concrete. Responding crews had a difficult technical trench rescue on their hands, having to shore up the trench as they worked to prevent another collapse, which could endanger the rescuers as were effectively perform, doing this rescue. We have debris that has to be carefully removed so its not falling down. We have soft soil thats continuing to come into the hole. Now we have to evacuate weight, which is what were using. The vacuum for. We have to be cognitive of where the victim may be at as were digging around that individual. Crews on scene had hoped for a rescue, but once they reached the construction worker, crews were able to confirm that he had died. It took over two hours and over 50 firefighters working together to effectively reach the individual in evaluate the individual for signs of life and inform. Fortunately, two hours into this incident, we are naming this a fatal incident. Next of kin were devasted after learning the news at this point, investigators arent releasing a lot of details about the man who died. But the Citys Department of public works confirmed that the man was working on a city sewer replacement project. At the same project, ktvu reported on a month ago. We then workinge project and spotted some of the same crew members at the trench collapse. The Citys Department of public works says contractors and city workers are devastated. We want to make sure that the workers perform safely and are safe. We dont know what caused this trench collapse at this point. Thats something that were looking at to find out what happened, do whatever we can to make sure nothing like this happens again. While the initial response is now over, the investigate into what happened here is just getting underway. San Francisco Police and cal osha have launched parallel investigations to figure out exactly how this deadly collapse happened. In San Francisco, christian captain ktvu fox two news a gas prices are spiking in some states across the country and here in california, Governor Newsom is once again calling for an investigation into those higher prices. According to triple a, the statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded right now is 6. 03. That is up 0. 75 from one month ago. And 2. 19 higher than the National Average of 3. 84. President biden, democrats and even some republicans have said it is too extreme a shutdown would cut off paychecks for nearly 4 million federal workers , including 2 million active duty military troops and reservists. Tsa employees and air Traffic Controllers will still be on duty, but unpaid, which is why officials are warning of possible sick calls. Irs offices will likely shutter , as well as local passport and visa processing centers. Some good news, though. Social security checks, medicare and medicaid will continue if congress stumbles. Shes already had a fractured ankle, but she ran. So now we havent. We havent even been to the hospital. Everything happened so fast. Somali tells me shes in pain and has difficulty walking after her ordeal, tia suspects her mom was likely targeted because shes an older asian woman. Somali says the intruder stole her purse and phone, but they were recovered nearby. A short while later, she says the thief was seen lurking outside the home for a half hour before breaking in. Somali tells me shes struggling with the mental and physical trauma of the home invasion. Reflecting on how she escaped it, i heard all over and im so scared. I dont have no choice. Somali says the intruders face was covered with only his eyes showing he wore all black clothing and light colored shoes. Tia says it took police about 25 minutes to respond. The mother of a six year old vallejo boy murdered in 1987 is now speaking out after a suspect was finally arrested in that case, 69 year old fred kane, the third now faces murder, kidnap and other felonies in the death of jeremy stoner, investigated heirs say kane kidnaped the first grader sexually assault him and then killed him. Prosecutors say dna evidence links kane to the murder. Jeremys mother, karen tabler, is now a great grandmother. She says her youngest child of three has never left her memories or her heart. He was fun loving an initial suspect was cleared after two juries could not reach a verdict. Police say the suspect who was shot on sierra santos was holding a bb gun. They say he pointed that bb gun at officers when they were responding to a911 call about a man with a gun on a trail right near grange middle school. Police say they do not currently plan to release the name of the officer or the 40 year old suspect suffered nonlife threatening injuries. Ricardo cortez says that lowriding is about style and taking pride in building something unique. So through his lowrider tech workshop and his childrens book, he wants to keep the tradition alive for the next generation. In. Im a member of new style car club, which was established in 1974. Low riding is a Family Affair for Ricardo Cortez and his father in law, robert gutierrez. Cortez says lowrider culture is an important part of chicano or Mexican American history. In california. I think the most beautiful part about it is that this was an innovation that was created in the barrios of chicanos and now we see how globalized this culture, this lifestyle, has become from california all the way to japan. Last year, cortez created the 408 art lowrider workshop for teens as a creative ambassador for the city of san jose. Cortez has also written a childrens book, the abcs of lowriding, which explains the history, technology and important people in lowrider culture. This is sonny madrid, founder of lowrider magazine. In 1977, hes from san jose, went to san jose state university. And right after that, he started the magazine. And its all about style, all about attitude and kind of being a representation of yourself as a manifestation through a vehicle. Cortez and the United Lowrider Council of san jose also believe lowrider is often judged unfairly. They say most lowriders follow traffic laws and simply want to show off their customized cars. After san jose lifted its 30 year cruising ban, the council is now lobbying to lift cruising bans across the state. But instead of fighting every city one at a time, now were one big swoop just to repeal it. The whole state. Assembly bill 436 will legalize cruising statewide. And is awaiting the governors signature. Now, in the meantime, cortez says that he will keep creating and educating people about lowrider culture. Mayor matt mehan rather and other city leaders joined some of the new residents of the hotel today for the grand opening. The hotel was converted to provide 90 units of interim and permanent housing to at risk residents. The mayor says this type of housing is a big part of the solution to reduce homelessness. The invitation to the event shows it was a 3,300 per person fundraiser or 5,000 per couple. The host names on the invitation are some of the biggest employers and Agricultural Producers in the salinas valley. But those who protested outside the event say Governor Desantis is not welcome here. So he has written antiimmigration antilgbtq antiabortion laws that has put our peoples lives in danger. Protesters are also alarmed that those attending this event are, in many cases, there employers. And so for a family that makes their money out of peoples sweat and tears and sacrifices, it is very concerning because he is not welcome here. Monterey county. Salinas is not stand for that. Earlier this week, the city council of salinas actually passed a resolution six zero, making it clear the councils opposition to Governor Desantis visit. The resolution was coauthored by councilman anthony rocha. Its important for elected officials at all levels of government to call out hate, bigotry, racism and homophobia. And ron desantis is agenda is one full of hate, and its a dangerous one. But jeff gorman, the chair of the Monterey County republican party, defended the visit. So theres a big need for dialog and im grateful that desantis came. Governor desantis came here and spoke to us. Gorman points out that the big agricultural plants not only provide jobs, but also tax revenue to the city and county, which boys, everyone who lives here. In regard to why people are in such an uproar, i think there is a lot of fear in our community because cause there are immigration laws that are being ignored and its a republican plank, not just desantis, but i think every republican feels the laws around immigration need to be upheld. A federal lawsuit filed today accuses tesla of subjecting its black employees to a hostile and racist work environment. The Us Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleges tesla has retaliated against black employees since 2015. The eeoc says it tried to reach a settlement with the company before filing the lawsuit, but were unable to reach that agreement. The bill establishes a 20 an hour minimum wage for cooks and cashiers. Right now, the median wage for fast food workers here in california is 16. 31 an hour. That law will also create a statewide Fast Food Council that will develop standards for minimum wages, working hours and workplace conditions as 557,000 people at 30,000 locations. This is a big deal. 20 an hour, 8,080 of the workforce. The majority are breadwinners. And we have the opportunity to reward that contribution, reward that sacrifice and stabilize an industry in turn, the raises go into effect on april 1st. California air Resources Board and the california Emergency Commission are partnering with the state to award School Districts with nearly half 1 million to replace old diesel busses with electric busses and charging equipment. We need to stop burning fossil fuels as fast as we can. Pittsburg Unified School District already has four entirely electric busses, with three more coming by the end of the year. The electrics are quieter. Theyre cleaner. You dont end up with a lot of soot. They allocated about 500,000 of district money in 2018 to go along with Grant Funding to pay for them, citing Assembly Bill 579, which requires 100 of new School Busses be zero emission by 2035. Environmentalists saying it is healthy for the atmosphere and the kids. When kids are exposed to traffic related air pollution, it can have Significant Health impacts. Milpitas Unified School District has six electric busses after it received a 2 million grant in 2019. The districts outofpocket expense was a little over 200,000, but theyre not applying for the grant this year. While they were leaders in the movement. They say there are limitations. The range is not quite there yet. You know, when this one tops out, number 56, its usually around 86 miles for longer routes. There just arent enough chargers is just an attached plug here and it takes a while for the busses to be made and that theres just a lot of money in the, you know, floating around out there. And theres School Districts throughout the entire United States that are taking advantage of that. And replacing their extremely aging fleet. So you know, so it can be difficult for the manufacturers to keep up with the current demand. There are more than 560 clean School Busses currently operating on california roads.
