Police, it gave people who were camping and opportunity to leave on their own 300 left voluntarily. The remaining protesters were arrested, and today the new York City Police Department Released body cam video from the protest at columbia university. Earlier in the week. Flashbang over. Lets deploy a flashback. Officers cleared the entrance of Hamilton Hall tuesday night. Protesters had broken into the building just after midnight and barricaded the entrance and other parts of the building using chairs and desks, chains and locks. Officers cleared the barricade, entered the hall and then removed the protesters. Police also cleared encampments from the schools main lawn and arrested dozens of students. A group of republican lawmakers in sacramento is now condemning some of the protests on College Campuses here in california. The leaders of the Republican Caucus want to withhold money from the state universities where protests are taking place. The lawmakers say they want to hold School Administrations accountable for, quote, doing nothing to protect student safety and ensure lawful conduct. One aspect of addressing this issue is a budget solution that we can propose through this building, to make sure that these administrators know that this legislature is serious when it comes to keeping students safe on these public campuses, and we have a responsibility to make sure that happens. And if the administrators wont take it serious, we will. And tonight, no word yet from college and University Administrators about the proposal to withhold state funding. Student protesters at uc berkeley say they have had talks with uc staff about the call for divestment. Ktvu Jana Katsuyama joins us live tonight from the cal campus with more on these discussions. Jana claudine and mike, we havent seen any of the violent clashes here today that you were talking about at some of the other campuses here you can see a purple tent, and in front of that they have been having daily programing where some of the protesters have been talking about their personal stories as palestinian americans, and also about the reasons why they are here with these tents, staging this protest. The student protesters say they have a Divestment Committee that includes faculty members, and one spokesperson says this is an academic setting. And so they have done research which they are presenting to uc officials. He says hes encouraged by the progress student protesters say theyve had meetings with uc officials calling on the university to review its investments and cut ties with any weapons manufacturer and related military supply industries involved with israeli attacks on gaza. Weve met with all all sorts of people. Chancellor christ, the staff. Im not sure about the positions of each of these people, but like its in progress. On thursday, they said a small victory. It was a near unanimous vote in favor of the bill. Protesters say the undergraduate student body voted for a bill to block expenditures of student funds on companies linked with military industry. They hope the university will do the same. All these companies that are profiting off the war. So the primary aspect is complete divestment from blackrock just to take our money, our tuition, our taxes away from these companies that are making money off the blood of the people of gaza. What students are, by and large, calling for is divestment from weapons manufacturers, divestment from israeli businesses, and divestment from institutions, institutions or companies that do business with israeli businesses. Professor christopher marsicano, who studies Higher Education finance at davidson college, says this is not the first time student activists have called for divestment. In the 1980s, there was a similar focus on south africa, but University Funding has changed over the decades, making divestment more complicated. But effectively, endowment managers have to do is figure out what of the various different pieces of their very complicated endowment meet those criteria for the list is broader than that. There are other companies in the supply chains of these firms that are dedicated to the manufacturing, to the to the arms industry, that the administration is being shown in these negotiations. The protesters here said that they plan to attend a meeting scheduled for 530 with a graduate student body and ask them to pass a similar divestment bill that would restrict graduate student funds. And, jana, what about the response tonight from uc officials about all this . You know, they have been very quiet about this. I did speak with a uc spokesperson today who would not give any confirmation about whether there have been these meetings, and also said that they had no comment on the issue of the divestment. And do we have any idea on timeline, even for the protesters or from the uc in response . I know Commencement Ceremonies are going to be in a little over a week, and so certainly that will be a time when a lot of people will be crowded on the campus of uc berkeley. Any talk about timelines . They havent said anything about timeline in terms of their discussions with the university over terms of them being here. Although one of the speakers who just got up in the past hour said that they want to be here as long as it takes in order to get their message across to the university officials. All right. Jana katsuyama, live tonight on the cal campus. Jana, thank you for that. And we will continue our coverage on what is happening at cal and what is happening at universities across the country on our website you can go to ktvu. Com. Youre trying to get your kid to school, and all of a sudden the car going the wrong way slams into you. Bullets are flying. Thats exactly what happened to this mother and daughter. It was supposed to be a routine drop off at school, but for a mother and her 13 year old daughter, it was anything but. After they got caught up in a rolling gun battle and were rammed by a chevy camaro, she just turned the corner and the car was pretty much on top of her. Hit their car high speed and, they were shooting billy duprees daughter and granddaughter were headed to Francophone Charter School when their Ford Explorer was hit by a camaro. Going the wrong way at about 745 thursday morning. Neighbors tell me the camaro was one of four cars involved in a couple of rolling gun battles that ended with the crash, but the gunfire didnt stop there. After the accident, they were still shooting. The airbags are deployed. She just hears gunshots. The mother and daughter were not hit by gunfire. They managed to climb out of the roof of their suv and walk away. I feel blessed that nothing wrong with them. You know, with my daughter or my granddaughter, thats thats the main thing. The father of the 13 year old agrees. Its a miracle, actually. I mean, it could have been a lot worse. It could have been a lot worse. The violence erupted not far from Bishop Odowd High School, a woman who didnt want to go on camera tells me she heard the gunfire through her earplugs. I heard a series of shooting so as if two people were shooting back and forth. Given that there are three schools in the neighborhood, i think enhanced police attendance would be really necessary to keep track of whats going on in here. Another neighbor tells me he saw everything unfold from his front porch. I hear shooting coming up the street, then two cars fly down the street and everything. And, i mean, im used to this stuff, so i wasnt tripping. Then i seen a second set of cars, so then i heard the boom. I heard the crash. Oakland police recovered shell casings along cherokee avenue. The camaro was towed as evidence. Now, police will be going through that camaro and analyzing those bullet casings in hopes of identifying everyone involved in this gun battle. Her rumbling engine and low riding body will be front and center this weekend at one of two Cinco De Mayo parades, very excited and a little nervous. Its just because, you know you want everything to, to go well after all your planning, polanco, president of the lowriders council of san jose, says planning for this year started days after last years event. The result will see a parade on the east side along the king road corridor and one through downtown san jose on santa clara street. Were encouraging the public to come down, celebrate responsibly and to be able to celebrate with us, Sergeant Jorge garibay says. Several street closures will be in effect saturday from multiple events and sunday. Two lowrider parades, both starting at 10 00 in the morning. Councilman omar torres is spearheading efforts downtown. We know that when we collaborate with our San Jose Police department, right, its going to be a little bit more organized. And, and, folks feel safer coming down to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, the 680 freeway off ramp to story road will be closed. And there is a potential for road diversions based on traffic congestion. This year, the department is doing more than collaborating. Officials say officers will ride in the lowrider parades in this 1964 plymouth. I think were fortunate the community is willing to collaborate with us and that were have the opportunity to be involved in these parades. Just because we remove a band, that doesnt mean that the Community Wants to be part of the parade, polanco says. Cementing a better relationship with the sapd was always a goal from the old days to the ugly days to the current day of two parades, when we kind of sat down, you know, and talked about things and, and since then the relationship has grown. We have a line of communication so that we could further grow that. And, you know, hopefully, like within five years, its even better. And they actually have a Winter Weather advisory that goes into effect saturday morning. Heres the satellite today, though, and the key change. You can see it happening over the past few frames. And that is a return of some fog near portions of the coastline, especially closer to Half Moon Bay this afternoon. Im expecting some more cloud cover out there first thing tomorrow morning near the coast and right around the bay, but then clearing skies into the afternoon hours. Current numbers out there for the 5 00 hour. We have some 70s in santa rosa. Livermore 74, oakland 68. In San Francisco, checking in 63 degrees. Were showing you some wind to reports right now. The port of oakland is helping make history with the first commercial Hydrogen Truck stop in the world. Well take a closer look and gen z taking a growing interest in trade school education. Why a number of would be College Freshmen would prefer an alternative route. Plus, new legislation would honor the first black woman elected to congress. How the bill would posthumously recogniz congresswoman Shirley Chisholm first commercial zero emission emission Hydrogen Truck stop in the world, and now the nations largest fleet of heavy Hydrogen Trucks will try to prove that these trucks can haul heavy freight and not pollute at the same time. Ktvu tom vacar spent the day out there at the port and joins us live tonight with the story. Tom it was like watching turn a page in history, because environmentalists say when it comes to cleaning up ports, the port of oakland really, really gets it. Marissa esquer is a modern day test pilot anchored to the road. Its very easy to get on the freeway, very easy to maneuver. Everythings very smooth. The veteran diesel trucker is one of a very few chosen to prove that Hydrogen Powered trucks can haul the freight emissions free. I love it, i really love it, i enjoy it, its lovely. Its very quiet. On thursday, a huge Public Private megaproject norcal zero became fully online at the port of oakland, the only heavy commercial Hydrogen Truck stop on earth, and can fuel 200 trucks a day and we can fuel trucks back to back ten minute fills. Thats very comparable. What you would get with a diesel conventional fuel 30 hyundai axion fuel cell. Big rigs are the nations largest fleet, with more than 400 miles of driving range. Powerful acceleration, Payload Capacity and importantly, short refueling time. This is a real truck from a real production line that was delivered here to the largest fleet. Now operating in north america. That is a very big deal. And now we have line of sight to zero emission. And i point to things like this, to projects like this and say it is possible. Yet there are detractors, much like modern electric vehicles had at the start, about price and range. Those arguments have zero legitimacy. If we Work Together and we all have the will to make the change happen, the stone age did not end because they ran out of stones. They created something better. Asthma and cancer ridden west oakland will have Better Health for sure. The only safe emission is no emission. Thats what we found out. The port already uses electric cranes, vehicles and shore power to ships to stop running, idling, pollution. When we look forward to using the station not only for trucks, but for equipment and eventually boats and ships, is going to be using hydrogen as a source of the energy. And so with the norcal zero project, its really fair to say that the port of oakland is currently leading the way for the entire world in cleaning up ports, and thats a big, big contributor to pollution reporting live. Tom baker, ktvu, fox two news. So tom, theyre the first. And weve seen this with electric vehicles. It takes a while for that to kind of spread to other places. Even if people find it to be successful. What is the timeline, do they think for other ports, other industries to say, yes, we can see this works. Maybe well try it too. Generally speaking, thats going to be a project of years. Currently, one of those trucks costs about 500,000. When you build them at scale, when you put them in a factory and build them, you know, hundreds and thousands at a time, then the price goes way, way down. The other thing that has to happen is there has to be both state, local and especially federal government incentives to do this , because the quicker you get those on the road, the more there will be, the less expensive they will become and the better the environment will get. Because again, trucks are major polluters. Planning for other ports. But weve got it right here in the bay area. The first. All right. Tom vacar live tonight in oakland, tom. Thank you. Well, former President Donald Trump is back in a new york courtroom in the third week of his criminal trial on the stand, an attorney who represented Stormy Daniels in a now infamous 130,000 payment. Foxs Connor Hansen has more from new york. Im not allowed to testify because of an unconstitu national gag order. Were appealing the gag order and lets see what happens. Former President Donald Trump in court, facing more arguments over whether he violated his gag order. Prosecutors say he should be fined again for making comments about Michael Cohen and others. Trumps lawyers say he needs to defend himself. Judge juan merchan didnt rule but already agreed to fine trump 9,000 for past social media comments. If i were trump, id be tempted to just give judge merchan a check for about 10,000 every monday and say, this is for this weeks violations. Attorney Keith Davidson was back on the stand. He represented both Stormy Daniels and karen mcdougal. Prosecutors zeroed in on a deal he worked on with trumps ex attorney, Michael Cohen. In a tv appearance daniels made when trumps lawyers crossexamined davidson, they portrayed him as a shakedown artist who tried to manipulate celebrities. A threshold issue in this case is whether donald trump lied when his bookkeeper classified the payments to Michael Cohen to Stormy Daniels as a, quote, legal expense. Lawyer Keith Davidson testified that he never dealt directly with trump, only with Michael Cohen. Cohen is expected to take the stand later in the trial in new york. Connor hansen, fox news. Still to come, Interest Rates higher for longer as inflation continues to tick up instead of ticking down, and should people buy or rent in the bay area . A new survey takes a look. And the answer may not surprise you, but were going to have more on the dramatic difference in those numbers. Also, fewer High School Graduates are interested in actually going to four year colleges. Why trade school is becoming more of a o down to the feds 2 target rate at its latest meeting this week, the fed chose to keep Interest Rates unchanged as they remain at a 20 year high of roughly 5. 25, and many investors predict rates will remain higher for longer. This week, the fed hinted it does not plan to cut rates until it has greater confidence. Inflation is slowing substantially. Earlier today on the floor, we did speak with certified Financial Planner James Mcbride from the mcbride group, and he says the economy is still in good shape since unemployment remains low. If you do have a lot of people working, people are making money, hey, theyre going to spend that money. And two thirds of our gdp is consumer spending. So its theres a lot of good news in that inflation has cooled from its peak of 9. 1 two years ago. And many investors say they only expect one rate cut later this year, not 2 or 3, as they had expected earlier in the year. Well, theres been little change in the number of people filing for Unemployment Benefits for the first time last week, new claims for benefits came in at 208,000. Jobless claims have remained in a range of 194,000 to 225,000 this year, continuing claims for those who are continuing to get benefits came in at 1. 7 million. Gen z is now choosing more trade schools over traditional four year colleges. The trend comes as the cost of Higher Education continues to rise out of the price range of many prospective students, foxs Lauren Simonetti reports from a lincoln tech school, with more on whats driving the choice. Trade jobs are in demand. This is auto Technician Training thats happening at lincoln tech , a trade school in new york. Theyre pushing out graduates to an industry that is 37,000 positions short per year. Thats attractive to young people that want to streamline their ticket to the middle class without taking on large debt. And some want to create generations of wealth. Being an automotive tech, i can have my own shop work at different dealerships from honda, allstate, mercedesbenz and that allows me to learn and adapt to all the coming ages of cars. And me doing this, i can pass it down to my kids. These are hands on positions. I mean, theyre actually physically getting their hands dirty as theyre working on this vehicle, but this industry has also become increasingly clean, meaning a lot of the issues that youre facing when you bring your car into the shop are electrical. And thats another reason that the industry is seeing a spike in demand. Many of the students i speak with say they love what they do. They like creating something. They like fixing something, and theyre not scared that their job will either be outsourced or easily replaced by artificial intelligence. In queens, new york, Lauren Simonetti, fox business. A local fan favorite will not be reopening after a years long pandemic era hiatus where you can still find their food at other spots in the bay area and the bay bridge lights project has reached a major funding goal when the sparkly display is set to return to the bridge and in weather, a warm start to may. Lots of sunshine, 70s and even some 80s today. But were going to go back to winter as we head toward the weekend. In fact, were talking about rain here and sierra snowfall. Well have the update coming p and will not be reopening after its years long hiatus. The acclaimed vietnamese restaurant first closed temporarily in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, and then remain closed as the owner planned to renovate. But after years of closure, the owner says the Construction Cost to remodel and reopen right there at the Ferry Building are just too high. There is a new slanted door restaurant now open in napa, as well as another sister location in san ramon. And the chef also has a very popular Sandwich Shop in the Mission District called chucks takeaway. The Hyatt Regency in San Francisco officially announced today that it will be restoring that historic rotating restaurant to celebrate the hotels 51st anniversary. The Hyatt Regency says that revolving restaurant will spin for six hours a day, with each rotation taking 56 minutes. The space will eventually be available to special tier hotel guests or through an exclusive regency club package. The metropolitan Transportation Commission is considering a proposal which would prevent anyone not in a Motor Vehicle from crossing the richmondsan rafael bridge during the workweek. An mtc board today heard testimony on a plan to close the lane to bikes and pedestrians monday through thursday, and use it for a car breakdown lane to help prevent severe traffic backups. Now, people walking and biking would be allowed to use the lane on fridays through sunday. The plan is opposed by the marin county bicycle coalition. It says adding more car capacity to the bridge will not reduce traffic congestion. The popular bay bridge lights will be returning early next year. The Organization Behind that art installation said today. It has secured the funding to turn that light display back on. Those lights went dark more than a year ago because of maintenance issues, and since then, more than 10 million has been raised to revive the installation. Earlier on the four, we spoke with ben davis, the founder of illuminate, the nonprofit behind the bay bridge lights. It wont look substantially different, but it may look a little bit more mature and beautiful. But whats really exciting is were were doubling the number of leds. Were actually going to still be on the western span, on the Northern Edge of the bay bridge, but were going to wrap around the cables with a light node on each side. So youll still have the same view into San Francisco and the north bay. But the idea here is, as a matter of esthetic equity, we invite all the other communities around the bay area to join in.
