WE DO KNOW SHE WAS HOSPITALIZED, BUT THERE’S NO UPDATE ON HER CONDITION. OMAHA AND DOUGLAS COUNTY HONOR ITS EMPLOYEES WITH THE ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. AWARD. THE CITY RECOGNIZED POLICE LIEUTENANT SHERIE THOMAS, WHILE THE COUNTY HONORED PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER LEIA BAEZ. BAEZ SAYS SHE LEARNED THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SERVICE FROM HER PARENTS. >> I LOVE GETTING TO PASS ALON THESE SAME LIFE LESSONS I LEARNED FROM MY FAMILY TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE I WORK WITH IN OUR COMMUNIT WHETHER IT’S MY MENTEE OR A GROUP OF LATINO STUDENTS, I GE FIRED UP KNOWING THAT MY STORY CAN GIVE OTHERS HOPE. ALEXANDRA: THREE OTHERS WERE REPRESENTED DURING TODAY’S CEREMONY AS WELL -- FORMER NORTH HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL GENE HAYNES, AS WELL AS HOLLY MURPHY-BARSTOW AND TRISH LONGACRE. LIEUTENANT SHERIE THOMAS SAID IT’S UP TO POLICE AND THE COMMUNITY TO WORK TOGETHER TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS IN THE WORL >> RECOGNIZE WHEN THINGS ARE WRONG AND STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT. THERE MAY BE TIMES WHERE YOU MAY HAVE TO BE A VOICE FOR THE VOICELES AS I CONTINUE MY CAREER IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, I WILL CONTINUE TO BE A LEADER THAT LEADS BY EXAMPLE.
