Im Andrea Mitchell in washington. We begin in the middle east. Today Israels Defense forces are using Air Strikes and artillery to hit hezbollah targets inside Lebanon'>Southern Lebanon. This comes after two days of deadly attacks that ripped through the country. Also aimed at the iranbacked terrorist group. Hezbollah is calling it an act of war. Lebanon is banning passengers from carrying passengers and walkietalkies on flights. Starting tuesday, israel remotely exploded dozens of pagers followed wednesday by exploding walkietalkies, mobile Devices Hezbollah turned to for messaging out of Fear Israel could hack their smartphones. At least 37 people were killed. Close to 3,000 injured over the past two days. Two u. S. Officials telling Nbc News the attacks are a vast covert israeli operation. Israel is not commenting, not confirming or denying. New comments from Secretary Blinken in france saying they are hoping not to have escalation. When it comes to northern israel and Lebanon'>Southern Lebanon, thats the fact that since october 8, hezbollah has been Firing Rockets into israel, israel has been firing back, the population in both northern israel and Lebanon'>Southern Lebanon has had to flee their homes. We want to see them go back to their homes. Joining me from Tel Aviv, correspondent raf sanchez. Raf, the tipoff was a very specific comment by the Defense Minister to the top u. S. Negotiator in Tel Aviv on monday that the war was now moving to the north and that military action against hezbollah was now the only option. They announced they were doing it. They didnt say what they were doing. What they did was shocking to the world. A lot of people are questioning the timing and the means, because its indiscriminate. Reporter thats right, andrea. There are two prongs to this israeli operation. The first is that vast covert action inside Lebanon. First the pagers and then the walkietalkies exploding, causing widespread injuries to hezbollah members. But as you say, a number of civilians caught up when these explosives went off in supermarkets, on the streets, on public transport. Two children killed. A number of Human Rights Groups are criticizing this israeli operation, saying that it was indiscriminate in terms of how much damage it caused. The other prong is what appears to be a more traditional military operation. Earlier this morning, the Israeli Military announced that it was striking in Lebanon'>Southern Lebanon. It has been doing that since the beginning of the war. But it said these strikes were aimed at degrading hezbollahs capabilities. Thats a broad set of aims. Its different from what we have seen over the last ten months where israel has said it was striking a specific rocket. It was a specific group of hezbollah fighters. As you say, it came after Israels Defense minister said that this country is entering a new phase of the war. That its shifting troops and resources from the fight In Gaza to the fight in Lebanon. I will also say, andrea, as well as the substance of these attacks, we dont know at this point on what scale these strikes in Lebanon'>Southern Lebanon were happening. There was symbolism that they announced it a couple of minutes before Hezbollahs Leader began speaking for the first time since those walkietalkies and pagers started blowing up. Calling this an act of war, as you say. Raf, at this point, what is the likely retaliation going to be . Do we have any signal as to what hezbollah might do . Reporter so, we just heard this long speech from the supreme leader. There was, as you said, a lot of rhetoric. He said this was an act of war. He accused israel of crossing all red lines. There were a few details of substance that i think are interesting, andrea. He acknowledged that this was a huge blow struck by israel against his organization. He sort of shrugged saying, this is war. Some days they hurt us. Other days we hurt them. He gave a specific number. He said that there were 4,000 pagers in the possession of hezbollah members all across Lebanon. By his math, he says, that israel was trying to kill 4,000 people. Thats the first time we are hearing a specific number from hezbollah. Its worth saying that there are some 3,000 or so people injured in Lebanon as a result of the explosions, according to the public health ministry. The other thing i thought was really interesting, he said that after that first wave of Pager Explosions happened on tuesday, israel sent messages to hezbollah directly and indirectly. Saying if hezbollah did not stop firing into northern israel, there would be more to come. Hezbollah did not stop firing. Indeed, just 24 hours later, those walkietalkies started exploding. That, andrea, is an interesting example of the kind of back Channel Messaging between these two arch enemies who are shooting at each other but also finding ways to communicate. Raf sanchez in israel, thank you. I want to bring in john brennan, former Cia Director during the obama administration. A longtime cia agency operative. John, you have had experience in the marines. You have had experiences a Station Chief in the middle east. This is unprecedented. Certainly, andrea, its unprecedented in scale and scope. The israelis have tremendously proficient technical capabilities. They are very creative in these covert operations. The fact they were able to compromise so thoroughly hezbollahs Supply Chain enabled them to have this impact. The two days of these detonations, first on pagers and walkietalkies, it does seem as though this was a prelude to the military strikes that are taking place today. Israels intention with those detonations was to diminish the Command And Control system of hezbollah, which would degrade their ability to be able to respond and to defend against these israeli strikes. We dont know what else israel might have in store in terms of lashing out against hezbollah. But as the israelis have said publicly, they are shifting their attention to the northern border. Against hezbollah. This does have the potential to escalate and to spiral into a broader conflict in the region. Apparently, according to the New York times, this was a front in hungary that manufactured and put the explosives in the devices. It was an israeli front, not even a local company. This was a long planned operation. Yes. I think it took many, many months if not many years to put in place. Intelligence and security services have been known to set up these front Company Shell companies. Clearly, the israelis did it very effectively. Hezbollah had no questions about the integrity of their Supply Chain, because they distributed these 4,000 pagers. It really is a demonstration of israels reach. Who knows i think theyre trying to send a signal to hezbollah in terms of what else israel might have been able to do in the Hezbollah Infrastructure that they could, in fact, exploit. Now they are trying to degrade their ability to retaliate by going after more traditional targets. Hezbollah has 150,000 missiles. This is not hamas with some rockets firing. This is a powerful force a military force that could take out israels airport, reach Tel Aviv easily. Why now . Why now just as the Secretary Of State was landing in egypt for a tenth round of negotiations . Why did netanyahu approve this . This is on one thing on which he and the military, the idf, his Defense Minister gallant agree. They disagree on hamas, but they agree on going after the north. Well, israelis across the political spectrum have long been worried about hezbollahs growing military capabilities. Many believe war with hezbollah is inevitable, a major war. Hezbollah has been able to put together quite an arsenal inside of Lebanon. 150,000 missiles and rockets, and many are longer range. They are very capable. They are hardened. They are hidden. An all out war between Israel And Hezbollah certainly would be very costly to israel. Israel would be able to prevail over hezbollah, but it would come at great expense, because as you point out, there could be destruction of air fields, strikes against israeli cities with a large number of israeli casualties. I think what netanyahu has decided and his War Cabinet is to be preemptive. But who knows how far it will escalate. I do not believe Iran Will Stand By and allow israel to continue to pummel hezbollah into submission. Hezbollah is not going to be submissive here. I think this is just going to encourage hezbollah to retaliate. Whether its in theater or as we well know, hezbollah has a worldwide Terrorist Network they have used in past years. Might they decide to strike against israeli diplomats or jewish targets or other types of things, given that they are not a match for the Israeli Military in the theater, but hezbollah does retain capabilities to hurt israel and israeli interests outside. I want to ask you about the wisdom of this. Not just during the Hostage Negotiations where there will be an impact. I talked to aviva. She was on with jose. She and other hostage families are very distressed at this. The wisdom of doing this. The u. N. Is going to have a meeting tomorrow. Do you have questions about the morality of it . Well, it may be a tactical setback for hezbollah, but as you are implying, i think theres real serious questions about the strategic wisdom of this. Its clear that netanyahu doesnt want to have a ceasefire with hamas In Gaza and has not gone to any great lengths to try to engage in Hostage Negotiations. So, therefore, he has taken a very aggressive tack In Gaza against hamas and now clearly against hezbollah as well. I wish that netanyahu and the israelis would put as much time, Effort And Energy and creativity into finding ways to try to bring down tensions in the region as opposed to what theyre doing, which is using their Military Prowess and capabilities, which are formidable. But they are punishing and retaliating against their enemies. Im not saying hezbollah and hamas are good players. They are absolutely not. But theyre not going to be vanquished into oblivion. They will fight back, especially if they are getting hit hard by the israelis. This is going to encourage hezbollah members to seek some type of retaliation. John brennan, thank you so much. Several polls out show how Vice President Harris And Donald trump still locked within the margin of error in the critical blue Wall State of pennsylvania, major home to organized labor. 15 local Teamster Councils in pennsylvania have endorsed harris, breaking with the national Teamsters Union that voted yesterday against endorsing either party for the first time in nearly 30 years. A key Speaking Spot for the head of the teamsters at the rnc also failing to win the executive boards approval. Speaking of endorsements, Harris Campaign is yet to win over the uncommitted movement. Thats a vocal group of propalestinian democrats organizing the battleground in Battleground Michigan and in minnesota as well. Her first appearance with harris since the democratic national committee convention, rather, endorsement by oprah. Trump will join an Antisemitism Event in washington. We begin with Kelly Odonnell and Vaughn Hillyard and jeff mason. Kelly, Doug Emhoff defended Kamala Harris after attacks by trump ally, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who said harris has nothing to keep her humble because she doesnt have biological children. Lets watch the First Gentleman. As if keeping women humble, whether you have children or not, is something we should strive for. It is not. Women in this country are sick and tired of weak men trying to take away their fundamental rights [ cheers and applause ] and then gaslight you about it. We are sick and tired of it. And the women in this country will never humble themselves before Donald Trump. [ cheers and applause ] i said First Gentleman. He wants to be the First Gentleman. He is the First Gentleman in Kamala Harris life but he is the second gentleman. He is a good campaigner for her. He went right to it. Reporter of the campaign season. This is becoming personal for the harris family. The campaign intends to stay focused on reproductive issues. But here they are coming at her because shes been by all accounts the family accounts, Doug Emhoffs first wife, the mother of the kids, the biological mother, a very good coparent in the lives. Reporter the candidate has tried to limit references to this thing. She tends to brush it off. A surrogate like her husband and the second gentleman and an active member of the campaign can step forward and deal with this more directly. He is on the Campaign Trail regularly, as is gwen waltz. Governor Tim Waltz has talked about breaking the glass ceiling, which you dont hear Kamala Harris talking about on the Campaign Trail. People around her are doing some of the kind of work that emphasizes that if she were elected she would be the first woman president. Shes the first woman Vice President. In this case, they are trying to keep much of the focus on the issues of reproductive Health Care and abortion rights and those things. When there are points where they view it as in some way insulting or degrading or humiliating, they are able to call it out. Former Press Secretary, now governor of arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders made a point of the fact she was the first Working Mother to be Press Secretary when she was in the trump White House. In some ways it may have been surprising she would make this distinction. It got a lot of attention. At the same time, the emhoff harris blended family has made it clear that Kamala Harris has been and is a parental figure to Cole And Ella emhoff. They are not wanting to deal with any suggestion otherwise. Donald trump, when he appeared on television last night, made a comment about the change in the candidacy from biden To Harris. He used phrasing like somehow as a woman shes doing better than biden, as if that would be a surprise. Those kinds of comments are the things that the campaign and key surrogates like Doug Emhoff are seizing on to call out in part to strike at the unfairness of it or perhaps the bias in it. At the same time to make a direct appeal to Women Voters who are in significant numbers, across the Battleground States where they are hoping to make the connection. That will tie into the Oprah Event as well. Kelly, vaughn is here. This race is so competitive. Any one thing in the electoral count could make a difference. That could boil down to one electoral one congressional district in omaha, nebraska. Our friends in omaha could be the deciders. That is what led folks connected to Donald Trump talking about that electoral college vote. What are they trying . Lindsey graham, senator from south carolina, was in nebraska yesterday. Listen to a sound bite. To talked to Julie Tsirkin on capitol hill. He said he wasnt there for changing the way nebraska delegates out its electoral votes now. If you win the congressional district in nebraskas 2nd, that could go towards, as it did in 2020, towards the democrats. That could be a deciding vote. Listen to lindsey graham. He said he did talk to members of the legislature about changing the State Law in the final 47 days. I hope they will allow winner take all. I hope the people in nebraska will understand, this may come down to a single electoral vote. I dont believe a Harris Presidency is good for nebraska. Apparently the delegation last night, the members of congress and the two senators, urged a change. It will be up to nebraska. We will see what they do. Donald trump himself this spring called on the governor to convene a Special Session to have the Legislature Vote to change the rules and make it winner take all. At this point in time, theres discussion in nebraska about doing just that. The math is, if Donald Trump wins nevada, arizona, georgia, north carolina, but loses and Kamala Harris wins pennsylvania, wisconsin and michigan, you have 269 to 269. Unless Kamala Harris were to win the congressional district of omaha. It would give her the White House with 270. Thats where conversations are taking place if you make Nebraska Winner take it all, it would make it a tie. At that point it goes to the House Of Representatives where the State Delegations then pick the president and right now its republicans who control a majority of the State Delegations. You can see why the Trump Campaign and allies are interested in this. There are only two states in the country, maine and nebraska. Nebraska being a red state, thats where they are making their play. Do this with one district that is correct. Our Friend And Colleague is reporting i was texting with him. There are conversations in maine, if nebraska were to do this, maine could try to follow suit and make their state a winner take all to essentially cancel out and nullify what nebraska is doing. Theres a lot at stake here over the next two weeks coming out of nebraska. We have been saying the race is tight. It really is. Jeff mason, the Harris Campaign says it has the backing, quote, of hundreds of thousands of teamsters and local around the country in swing states. They are citing endorsements from local chapters. What about the national lack of endorsement from the teachers union, the leader was on the stage at the rnc. They have been courting him from the teamsters. They have. Vice President Harris had a meeting with the teamsters just a few days ago and was asking very directly for that endorsement. Its a blow that she didnt get it. Important to note that Donald Trump didnt get it either, even though he is claiming he got something like The Endorsement from them. I think its also important to put this in context. She has gotten a lot of endorsements from other union organizations. She has the backing of president biden, who portrays himself as the most prounion president in u. S. History. Its september. That doesnt mean any endorsement at this Point Wouldnt be helpful. It may mean that a lack of an endorsement is less unhelpful, to use a double negative, than it had come earlier. She has momentum. The race is close, as we have been saying. Every little piece counts. She will be continuing to appeal to Union Voters in states like pennsylvania, in wisconsin, talking about policies that she considers to be pro union and in drawing that as a contrast with trump, even though she didnt lock up an endorsement she wanted. He picked up a major republican endorsement. Joining me now is democratic candidate for the senate in texas, congressman allred. You have raised the money. You are popular in the state. You are up against Ted Cruz. And the republican machine and the trump factor. You have a republican endorsement among some perhaps, but the biggest is liz cheney. Yes. Is Dick Cheney coming along as well . I dont know. Liz is a friend of mine. We served together in the house. Shes a patriot. I respect her. I respect her because she did something that we see very rarely in american politics. Somebody putting their country over their personal interests. I think thats what is motivating her to get involved in the senate race. Ted cruz was the architect of the effort in the senate to overturn the last american president ial election. There has to be consequences for that. That makes you unfit for office. Thats what liz is saying. The economy is still the biggest issue, maybe immigration is the second biggest. Those are two big factors in texas. Incredibly important. How does Kamala Harris improve her record on that . She has a lot of facts and administration policies behind her. The public is not picking up on it yet. I think what i have to do versus Ted Cruz is make sure folks know im on their side. I was raised by a single mom. I know what its like to struggle. Thats why im focusing on lowering costs. We are dealing with a total ban on abortion in texas thats having horrific consequences. Every day, more texas women coming forward, bravely telling stories about what they have been put through. Singularly by Ted Cruz. I mean that. He is responsible for putting judges on the District And Circuit and Supreme Court levels. He backed it in primaries republicans who voted for the draconian laws at the state level. He called for and supported the dobbs decision. In many ways, he is the architect of what we are experiencing in texas, a near total ban on abortion. What about the economy . Do you think the Rate Cut by the fed is going to help . It wont filter through the economy really quickly. I think its a good sign. Of course, we have been in this battle postpandemic to control inflation. While we have done better than our peer countries, we have more work to do. This is where they they have ratcheted up everything, the rhetoric, every angle because they think it will help them. Its just stirring up the base and not doing much to be able to change where other people are in terms of this election. Victoria, they think immigration is working for them. They have gone to all lengths, going against haitian people with the false conspiracy theory. The first debate and partly in the second debate, there were so many times when trump would pivot to immigration when he was asked about something else. Hammering Kamala Harris on immigration. We know that we have been in a broken Immigration System for close to three decades now. It is a pain point. I think everybody can agree on that. The issue is that what we see the Trump Camp doing is tapping into peoples anxiety, that its a zero sum game. I think the reality is that immigration makes our country stronger. It allowed us to recover from the threat of an inflationary spiral. We are not reproducing ourselves if we didnt have immigration. The narrative focused on fear, anxiety. Replacement theory. Immigration is something we need for the vibrancy of this country. Charlie, there was a rally in Long Island last night. 16,000 people for Donald Trump, continuing to push the false narrative regarding haitian immigrants. He said he will visit soon. We will see. Residents say they are over the Bomb Threats, and they have had it with the Bomb Threats and unwanted attention. Lets watch. It makes me feel upset. I come to get any daughter. Cant get in the store. Another bomb threat. Here we are again. My initial reaction was, at least they left our babies alone today. They have been literally sending threats to our kids at school, which is frustrating. How does that resonate with you, charlie, politically . What we are seeing is the reckless demagoguery on this particular issue. Also, look, this is what Donald Trump and j. D. I have been traveling the state for over a year. Actually, longer than that. I had been doing work for giffords reducing gun violence. I have seen families rejecting the extreme policies that have been instituted by Rick Scott and also by desantis as our governor. We have been mobilizing. The amendment ballot initiative, we received signatures earlier than expected. It included a good portion of republican voters that support this amendment. Rick scott has said time and time again that he does not Support Amendment 4. He supports the extreme ban on abortion. He just voted against ivf. You saw in 2022, close to A Million of our voters stayed home. Rick scott has never run in a president ial election. We are going to see a huge amount of voters that will be voting for the democrats that a lot of people dont realize. Florida has always been a swing state. I am now one point behind Rick Scott. We can win. I need everyone, everyone thats watching right now i know we are excited about electing our first Women President as we should be. We need to work on that. Of course, a lot of people, regardless of political affiliation, Support Amendment 4 but also support the right for adults to be able to use for the legalization of Adult Use for Marijuana Users in florida. Rick scott has vocally said he is against both, amendment 3 and amendment 4. These amendments need 60 to pass. We are seeing in all the polling that over 62 of floridians Support Amendment 4. I need 50 plus 1. The polls are showing a path for me to be able to retain the seat. Rick scott has been in government for 14 years. Floridians know he committed the largest Medicare Fraud in the history of this country. They also know that he wrote the preamble to project 2025, his 11point Plan for america where he is proposing to raise taxes on middle class families, eliminate medicare and social security. We have the largest number of seniors that live here in florida. If you see anything, go and watch the energy at the villages. The second gentleman came to visit our state last week. I have been at the villages. We had a huge parade in april. Florida is coming back. I hope that people are paying attention to what were about to do in november here. We have a minute left. Shes the only latina elected in our country. Our latino community is one of the largest groups living in the united states. They deserve better representation. My mother brought my sisters and i here looking for opportunities, for freedom, for safety. A lot of latinos came here for the same reason. They understand what its like to come and work and have your community behind you and being able to achieve the american dream.
