Michigan, georgia, and wisconsin, arizona, and nevada. A few other places but mainly those Swing States because the job is to Canvass Door to door for Donald Trump. Let me clarify. Technically it is not Elon Musk himself hiring here. Its the superpac mr. Musk created and the one he funds and it is called the america pac. And technically, this pac is not canvassing for Donald Trump. They are just canvassing to convince people to vote for Donald Trump on their own accord. When you remove the layers of legal and optical separation that a superpac magically provides, the reality here is that Elon Musk through his superpac is spending millions of dollars to do the trump Campaigns Door knocking for them. While the Trump Campaign and the rnc both claim that they are still doing some of that work themselves, we have seen numerous reports of republicans at the State Level say there are not many signs of a ground game. Not other than the Door Knockers hired by the Elon Musk superpac which is frankly surreal. Get out the vote efforts have traditionally been the Bread And Butter of political campaigns. Half the reason you need a Campaign Staff to begin with. Outsourcing that work, having the richest man in the world and his superpac do that work for you and pick up the tab, that is an unprecedented contribution to a political campaign and it may not even be the biggest contribution Elon Musk is making to Donald Trump right now. Today, The New York Times published an analysis of five days of Elon Musks posts on his website x. In those five days he posted 171 times and almost a third of those posts were false, misleading, or missing vital context. For instance, the times found that on one of the five days, a rumor circulated online claiming that a bomb had been found near a Trump Rally in New York. That rumor was quickly debunked. But Elon Musk pushed that rumor anyway, sharing it with his 200 Million followers, the the thing that makes what he is doing here so nefarious, these are not just incorrect, they are political. He says democrats are making memes. Illegal. The T Drawing boards are trying to open the border to gain boats from illegal immigrants. In one post, musk falsely implied the springfield ohio City Manager had received reports of haitian immigrants eating pets when in Reality T City Manager had said there were no credible reports. He is using one of the biggest Bully Pulpits in the world to push misinformation unchecked and that happens to bolster the twisted World View of Donald Trump whose politics do not seem based in reality. You could ask what is the difference between what Elon Musk is doing here and the spin on Fox News or newsmax or any of the conservative Information Silos . The answer is not much. But thats the problem, more has been transformed into a machine that takes what Donald Trump says and pushes it out as the truth. And that means he can get away with blatant lies like this one. Make up some lies. Like she said about the Border Bill Trump stopped. Number one, i didnt stop it. That was Donald Trump today in michigan. Telling a rally he did not stop a bipartisan Immigration Bill drafted earlier this year. That may sound like a small detail, but because polls shows immigration is a top issue for voters this year, and because trump is trying to pin the current status of our countrys Immigration System on Vice President harris, whether or not trump killed something that would have addressed immigration in a big way is a key detail here. And the truth is he did. He did kill it. Dont just take my word for it. Everybody who comes on this floor and says our border is broken, we should do something about it, you are absolutely right. And, unfortunately, we didnt get there. President trump opposed the senate bill. We couldnt find a better way forward. President trump said dont fix anything during the president ial election. A single biggest issue. Dont resolve this. Just a couple of months ago, republican senators were loud and proud about the fact it was Donald Trump who killed that bipartisan Immigration Bill. And you know who else is loud and proud about it . Donald trump. There is zero chance i will support this horrible open Borders Betrayal of america. It is not going to happen. I notice that a lot of the senators, a lot of the senators are trying to say respectfully, they are blaming it on me. I said okay, blame it on me. Please. Blame it on me. But now that particular detail is complicating his president ial campaign, he is rewriting history in front of our eyes. And to a huge swath of the country, he will probably get away with it. Meanwhile, back on earth one, in reality, today, Vice President harris made a trip to douglas, arizona to the u. S. Mexico border. Where she did her best to tell the truth about Donald Trump. It was the strongest Border Security Bill we have seen in decades endorsed by the border patrol union. And it should be in Effect Today to do things, results in realtime right now for our country. But Donald Trump tanked it. He picked up the phone and called some friends in congress and said stop the bill. Because you see, he prefers to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. Which version of this story will more of The American public believe . Harris Version Or Trump . The polls are not just unbelievably close, they are confusingly contradictory. Lets look at The State Vice President harris is in right now. Arizona. New polling from bloomberg shows harris up in arizona by three points. But new polling from Usa Today shows trump up in arizona by six points. So where are we really . Joining me now are two people who know a thing or two about running president ial campaigns. The former Campaign Manager for Bernie Sanders and roger lowell, campaigner for senator warren. And deputy Executive Director of the dnc. Gentlemen, thank you so much for spending a little of your Friday Evening with me. I just, let me start with you. In terms of the polling which would get anybody seasick. Just back and forth. The dial moving this way and that. How do you look at arizona . When you look at arizona, what do you think . You look at that Border Trip Today and it wouldnt be my first choice as a progressive but the campaign would respond, we are not rightly thinking about yogis. You are going to vote for Kamala Harris anyway. We will think about the people who are undecided and on the fence. Im sure they have indications that the Immigration Issue is one that they need to continue to resolve with some of those people. We are getting into the phase where data will play a huge role. You will have early votes coming in and good campaigns will track those and know if their people are voting and who is not voting and of those people letting them know. What are the messages that are going to move you . It will play a giant role. Roger, the argument over and Kamala Harris is telling the truth. Donald trump killed the senate Immigration Bill. That happened. He is trying to rewrite history. And im not suggesting that there is any validity to the argument he is making but truth matters a month before the election and the degree to which this is going to move people on an issue of fast points that appear to be top concern for american voters and those undecided. Yeah. No question that the truth matters. And i think as you pointed out, americans are talking about immigration. That is what the Vice President did today. She went down to douglas, arizona to see to the issue herself. Be at the border. Listen to the experts and wanted to lay out this idea that we need to take action. Action that Donald Trump and republicans killed by making sure that we have a safe, fair, humane way of making sure we have a border system. Making sure we enforce the laws but also making sure that families, both my parents were immigrants that came to america for freedom, opportunity, economic opportunity. But also, to live in a democracy. And she is talking about that for those living in this country playing by the rules and paying taxes. I get that it is a careful line she is trying to tread and a Big Tent she is trying to build. But i do wonder, you know, is she going to get credit for i think what she is trying to do two things in her remarks today. Is she going to get credit with the people she needs to get credit from . The undecided middle that may be susceptible to trumps message she has not done enough on the border because she is the sitting Vice President and may not actually believe what she is saying which is that Donald Trump killed this bipartisan bill. I also think information to what you said, there is a sense of reaffirming her values as a prosecutor. Think spent a lot of time trying to emphasize that portrait. Prosecutor enforces the law. And so how we might feel that immigration, she is telling you, we got to enforce the law. We have to have secure borders anted that portrait happens to be one i think that is strong. It works to her advantage by spending more time in the Speech Thinking and talking about her role as an enforcer. The California Attorney General as a prosecutor. It was another way to introduce ourselves. Roger, can you run, if you are trump, we talked earlier in the segment in the Opening Script about the role Elon Musk is playing here. He is obviously giving trump a major assist in terms of diluting the Truth Or Steering it directly into the territory of misinformation. Also playing a role in terms of the nuts and bolts of the campaign itself. What do you think that they effectively outsourced door knocking to a Superpac Run by the guy from tesla . Well, outsourcing is consistent with Donald Trumps record. This is a close election. In the nebraska congressional district. The campaign was built by the campaign. By the Harris Campaign. And the dnc. And you know, that is exactly the competitive edge we felt like we had all along. That is why dnc is proud we invested, we have over 300 officers, and people organized on the ground talking to neighbors. Going Door To door. Making phone calls. Thats how we win the election. Im also incredibly proud that the Dnc Today announced that not only invested in Battleground States but also in nonBattleground States as well. Turns out they were tough elections up and down the ballot for senate, for congress, for state house. Obviously, the top priority for all of us, no secret making sure Kamala Harris gets elected president. It will be where we make the difference. And we want to make sure we win the Popular Vote and win it big. Yeah. Roger makes a really great contrast not only is the Harris Campaign interested in the grass roots organization. The dnc is investing in the down ballot races. They are looking for what it would be like if harris won the White House and had to govern. What do you think of getting 300, 400 people who answer Elon Musks classified ad do in your door knocking . I dont know about this stuff. It just seems risky. When they made the decision. They said one of the reasons they allowed citizens united unfiltered money to go into these campaigns, there is no Quid Pro Quo here. These are outside groups so they can take as much money as they want, spend as much money as they want. This is Elon Musk who we learned from Donald Trump, if he were to win, he will outsource to Elon Musk. Govern efficiency. Running the government. What is he going to do . What is Elon Musk going to do with the government . Im sure its not going to be good stuff. So you have a Person Running A Superpac promised a job. And by The Way, Elon Musk started the electric vehicle company. Donald Trump Campaigning to abolish evs. This is truly a Quid Pro Quo to help one billionaire with another billionaire. When there are canvasses on the ground, i think that when you have canvasses that work, they are motivated. They are inspired by passion rather than cause. New York City mayor Eric Adams appeared in Court Today where he pleaded not guilty to federal charges of accepting illegal Campaign Contributions and bribes from turkish nationals. Meanwhile, they are continuing their investigation by looking into adams ties to israel, china, qatar, south korea, and uzbekistan. But Eric Adams is not alone when it comes to alleged foreign corruption. New Jersey Senator Bob menendez was found guilty of accepting bribes from egypt and qatar. Texas congressman henry cuellar. And Donald Trump has yet to answer questions about the 10 Million Egypts President thought to donate to his 2016 campaign. Joining me now is the former federal prosecutor for the southern district of New York and an msnbc legal analyst. Thank you for being here. The list is longer than it should be. And it feels like this is, is this a recent phenomenon where you have the foreign governments acting so deliberately with relatively easy marks. I dont know that it is you, but it is certainly becoming more brazen and therefore because it is so brazen it becomes that much easier for prosecutor to start investigating. And you look at the example that you just gave of Donald Trump. There it began with a reliable performance. And it was corroborated by intelligence and they started digging and oh, there is this 10 Million cash withdrawal. There was an audit done of his campaign donations. There was a lot where you couldnt put two and two together on where the donations were coming from. The indictment cites behavior from Adams Dating back to 2015 when he was the brooklyn borough president. Do you think they were dedicates resources all The Way back then . How do you imagine this investigation procedured given the extraordinarily long time line . So the reporting is they started investigating in 2021. So this whole idea is that this rhetoric from mayor adams that he is being targeted because he has been out there speaking truth to power for New Yorkers and he has views on politics and migrant crisis. Migrant crisis started in the spring of 2022 and this investigation began a year before that. So this has nothing to do with his politics. He wasnt targeted by joe biden, by Kamala Harris, by u. S. Attorney williams. He was targeted by the Turkish Government who saw him as an easy mark. Someone who would do as he was told in exchange for Luxury Travel to istanbul. So they started early. They started him back in 2015. And as his profile grew and he got higher office, they knew. They played the long game. Now he has more power. Now we can start calling in our favors and he did exactly as he was told. Hey. Dont make that statement about armenian genocide. Okay, i wont. No problem. Dont associate with the turkish community center. Okay, he did as he was told. The worst example was get your fdny to sign off on a building that has safety concerns. By The Way, during the month of september, when he was getting these messages while attending September 11th events. All the while, he is having this Building Approved that is a hazard. Which remains a building in existence in new York City today. I know you have feelings about this. This indictment came down the week of the u. N. General assembly. That is maybe not a coincidence. Definitely not. When i was a prosecutor, my feelings on the u. N. General assembly was oh god, i hate the traffic, that week. But putting that aside, it was always a pretty slow week. Because agents, all Law Enforcement agents generally have some kind of role. This is usually a pretty light week. So the fact they are doing this when they know the turkish president erdogan is in town, that is absolutely intentional. And i think it was intended to send a strong message to them that if you are going to engage in foreign interference in our elections with these foreign donations to campaigns, we are not going to tolerate it. If you are going to try and identify politicians, we will not tolerate it. And these politicians were going to make an example of you. So we will aggressively prosecute you. They searched his residence this week. It was an aggressive display. And the fact they did it when all the United Nations were there, that was not an accident. The reason the federal government is interested in this is because this is an issue of election interference. Outside governments involving themselves with american elections at any level is not a good thing for american democracy. You are nodding your head like that is a foregone conclusion. Donald trump for president. He did not solve the shortage of immigration judges. He did not solve the shortage of border agents. And what did he do . Well lets talk about that. He separated families. He ripped toddler out of their mothers arms, put children in cages and tried to end protections for dreamers. He made challenges at the border nurse. First of all, congratulations, im putting this out. Literally at exactly the right time. You are supergun yous, and it it is super released vent and and an essential read. I thought about it while watching harris at the border and i wondered what you thought. Here is a detailed policy. We have to have a humane policy. The one answer is the Surface Answer, i thought it was effective and valid. She did something very hard, a combination of toughness and softness. The reason i say it is the Surface Answer is we are not the average listeners, those are the folks you are interviewing in michigan. I say this because the first question american Voters Mind right now when you are thinking about immigration in an electorate that has, we shift it to the right. It is fundamentally threatened by this idea of a border crisis. When you think about immigration, one question comes to mind. Who is tougher at the border. Thats it. Who is tougher. So within that context that is so toxic, that is the only thing Donald Trump has in this moment. The only thing. So, the idea, and you can out Trump Trump at the border because he has put in so much Fear Mongering it is so hard. So yes i understand what the Vice President was doing to crystallize the image of someone who tough. I think about the backlash of that image. And the latino voters who were so instrumental because biden could humanize immigrants. Most people dont understand how far the right, some in the latino community have gone. And you know this sort of trend, you know what is happening better than anybody else. Can you talk about how the latino voters are thinking about immigration and why they left for the tough hand on the Border Wall . So first, kamala will win the latino vote. That is clear. But then okay, so think about this idea. Send them back. There is a group of small but growing group of latinos when you say send them back, they do not see themselves reflected in that. They see themselves reflected as the other. And you make sense of the numbers you are seeing out there right now. It is an electorate where third generation latinos are the third largest segment. Young, u. S. Born, under the age of 50. And most people speak english. And so trumpism is sort of bething on this idea you can invoke a sort of type of racial and ethnic grievance. Within the segment of latinos within that picture. And they have become so americanized. They can buy into the nativism and perhaps with more force because there is a fear among some latinos they will always be otherrized. We will always be these perpetual foreigners. When you put that together with the Fear Mongering, trumpism is powerful. Its an intoxicant. And you make a really important point. She will overwhelmingly win the latino vote. But within that vote, there is a growing subsection that is really critical and explains a lot of trumps growth. I guess i wonder when you talk about authoritarianism that exists in some american countries and the authoritarianism that trump presents for his vision of the country. Does it have to do with the interest in the right wing politics over immigration . It is so complicated. So democrats are betting on the idea that You Cast Donald Trump as a strong man. Now, because of so many latinos complicated history of authoritarianism, that will drive people toward democrats. But they have a very complicated relationship. This idea is present. At times because history has repeated itself in latin america. That at times when democracy feels messy, the appeal of strong men is perhaps required. Lets remember the united States Government Sort of conditioned that among the latin american population. In the name of ridding the west of communism, the united States Government supported strong Man Rule and military in places like chile. Nickingnicaragua. That so many come here with these political traumas. When you are facing something that because misinformation tells you that stuff, if trumpism has an appeal. Its a solution. So a number of you have mentioned the supreme court. And i think one of the things that has been really top of mind in this Election Cycle is reproductive rights. And specifically access to abortion are you thinking about this and the other assault on reproductive freedom including Invitro Fertilization . I have friends trying to start families and need ivf and it is top of mind for me and the Driving Force for why im going to go vote. And i dont have children, but i think about my niece. And if they are talking about their decision with our fallopian tubes, where else does that go . Where do we go from there . And the people making this decision are not a lot of women. With the stakes so high, simone and melissa talked to women about the burdens placed on them as voters. Everybody talks about black women and how black women are holding up the mantle of democracy. I feel like they put us as this high standard. If Vp Harris is elected, and she doesnt do the things she says she is going to do in these four years it will be oh, she promised us this. She didnt do this. Which is the same thing for everything that biden promised or everything that trump had promised. But they will put more pressure on her because she is a black woman. That is one of the reasons democratic candidates might be seeing lower Poll Numbers among black female voters under 50. 13 of black women who are likely voters in key Battleground States are planning to vote for former president trump. That is more than double the percentage of black women over 50 in the same states saying they were planning to vote for trump. Simone sanderses townsend will tackle that and more in their new msnbc special Black Women In America. The road to 2024. Joining me now are my friends and colleagues, simone and melissa. It is great to have you guys here to talk about this. First, nihilism. Please, simone. Help. For people for whom that clip was not enough, can you give some context to these younger women of color who are looking at even Kamala Harris atop the ticket and saying the world is so messed up, i dont even know if i can go into the voting booth. Look, we did not in our special and the conversations we had with real people as we like to call it. We talked to some black women strategists. Melissa had an amazing conversation. In this real People Conversation we had, i frankly think that the younger women, the Women Clark is a genz. She is under the age of 27. And the women from the Nail Shop we spoke to, those are millennials. The oldest millennials are 43. So younger black women, we understand the stakes of this election. We are not talking about voting for Donald Trumpment but we dont know if we are going to vote because of the issues. And melissa was not letting this go. She was encouraging these young black women saying look, what do you need to see to vote . I think we truly dont understand The Way in which the younger generation thinks about the world and politics. These were not women who were trump curious. That should be emphasized. They were not likely to vote for trump. They just werent likely to vote. And i think it was really a question of disaffection as opposed to affection for any particular candidate. So they need a reason to get out of bed on Tuesday November 5th and get to the polls. They dont think the biden administration has shown their works. They had questions about Student Loans and police violence. The economy obviously. Very concerned about re productive rights but not being real plans that are going to make a difference. They think politics is broken. Im a millennial, okay . My first election, my first president ial election was 2008. Okay . So i am a young person that has come of age and seen my Vote Turn into something. I went in to work inside government. Inside campaigns. I have seen the system work. I know that if you go in, you can change things. Theres an entire generation of young people who have not seen politics work for them. They are adjacent. They see activist movements do more of the work. This is interesting. When simone went and talked with the political ladies they are just below that generation after the civil Rights Movement who are deeply affected. They have seen massive change and they understand that in order for the system to work, you have to be in the system. And there are people like me, we are not part of the civil rights generation, but we believe that things can change and things can happen. We have seen that. We have millennials. But then everything else, these are a group of people, we have divested them of civics education. They have a tenuous and warped understanding of how government works. They all think the president can do all of these things but the president cannot do unless it is in tandem with congress or alternativety, there are things they want the the president to do that only state and local governments can do. Police violence. We made it difficult for them to come to the table and be well informed. And the information, the infrastructure has completely shattered. We talked about that. But, re productive choice. I would think because that exists. That is them in a Doctors Office and i know you didnt just talk to young women. You are talking to older women. Middleaged women. Women who may be seeking ivf. How is that playing . I would assume any woman that is following this issue and has a stake in it, that knows who she is voting for. You heard from joy. In that clip. And the women in montgomery county. Outside of philadelphia. Very important. Democrats netted 40,000 more votes out of that county in 2020. From 2015 to 2020. It could determine the race this next go round as well. But then you heard from the ladies in the Nail Shop. I want people to tune in Sunday Night okay . Because we hit on the issue of reproductive rights. And theres a woman in that conversation whose friends, most are like where were the friends . The friends were in georgia and needed an Abortion And Couldnt get one. And will that animate you to go to the polls . Im not sure. So again, i think why . She said she didnt feel like her vote mattered at all. I think she is very representative of a number of younger black women. Millennial women across the country who said i went out in 2016. They told me it was the most important election. She won the Popular Vote. So, i think that there are a lot of people that when they sigh clips like this, they want to shame the voter. They dont know this. No. I think people, if anything, if this summer has taught us anything, given what our travels, the switch at the top of the ticket. You need to listen to the voters. The voters have been saying for a while they didnt want the rematch. We need to listen to the voters. Instead of shaming people for their perspective, we need to hear them and meet them where they are if you want their vote. And make some structural change with civics education. There is a feeling of disaffection an emotional response. There is an intellectual sort of vacuum around how change actually happens on a legislative level. That is something we as a Democracy Need to make sure our citizenry is educated. They were completely engaged. And they cared about certain things. They just didnt feel that them caring and going to the Bat Roll Box would translate into action. Its enough you are enough you would be surprised. One of the women in there was a republican and she said it for the first time. Ladies did not know. They were like oh so yall have to watch to find out. Thats a cliff hanger.
