Shells collected during Captain Cook's ill-fated final voyage in 18th century are handed to English Heritage by family of lecturer who rescued them from a university skip
The enormous collection was started in the 18th century by amateur Bridget Atkinson. A portion of the collection was loaned to what is now Newcastle University, where they ended up in a skip.
