And in half an hours time here on bbc news, its Asian NetworksElection Discussion and debate, looking at the big issues affecting british asians in this years campaign. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. Jeremy corbyn has accused the conservatives of being in complete chaos over their tax policy. It comes after theresa may avoided repeating comments made by a senior colleague who told a newspaper there would be no income tax rises under a conservative government. With more, our Political Correspondent iain watson. Senior conservatives, including the Defence Secretary and foreign secretary, have been sending out a strong message to their core voters. If you are worried that income tax might rise if we are elected, dont be full to bid is not our intention. The Conservative Manifesto is nowhere near as explicit. Is it being rewritten . Our position on tax has not changed. We have set it out in the manifesto. What people will know when they vote on thursday, it is the Conservative Party who always has and is a low tax party. It is our intention to reduce taxes for ordinary working families. What does the Conservative Manifesto say on tax . At the last election David Cameron promised not to increase income tax, National Insurance or vat. The 2017 manifesto, only the Pledge On Vat remains. Promising to raise the level at which people pay the standard and higher rate of tax would also amount to a reduction. Theresa may could have tough brexit talks ahead. There is no pledge not to increase income tax was that she and her colleagues are talking about tax today because they want to refocus attention in this campaign about what would happen if a Labour Chancellor moves into number 11 downing street. How are you doing . All right . I am now i have met you. Labour says the policy of making the better off and big businesses pay more is popular and the conservatives lack clarity. There is chaos going on at the top of the government. What labour is offering is no tax rises or insurance rises or vat rises. An increase in Corporation Tax and some other Tax Increases at the top end to pay for social care. Theresa may could be finding it is more convivial to talk about tax and social careful that she and her convivial to talk about tax and social care. Colleagues are trying to stir the enthusiasm of traditional voters by saying instincts on taxation are the same. In scotland the leader of the Scottish National party, nicola sturgeon, is undertaking a tour of 30 constituencies by helicopter. Scotlands First Minister took to the skies in the final weekend of Election Campaigning, and is visiting six key constituencies over the course of saturday. The snp won 56 of the 59 seats in scotland in the 2015 general election, a record result which polls suggest they will struggle to match this time round. Speaking to the bbc ms sturgeon, said that she would be willing to enter into a coalition with the labour party in the event of a hung parliament. Well, ive always said if the arithmetic allowed it, id want the snp to be part of a Progressive Alternative to a tory government, a Progressive Alternative that invested in Public Services and protected pensions and had policies that lifted people out of poverty, but i think the polls in the rest of the uk still suggest the tories will win this election, but its no longer inevitable that theresa may increases her majority, because shes been exposed throughout this campaign as being weak, evasive, no answers to basic questions. So, youve got pollsters now saying that whether or not she increases her majority could come down to the outcome here in scotland, so lets not throw theresa may a lifeline by boosting her majority, lets put scotlands interest first, lets get strong snp mps to the House Of Commons so that we can continue to stand up for scotland and stand up for the kind of country we want to be. The Liberal Democrats have unveiled a poster attacking the conservatives social care plans. The image was revealed in westminster. The poster features a picture of theresa may with the caption hash tag dementiatax. Dont bet your house on it. The former ukip leader nigel farage has been on the Campaign Trail in essex and kent. Mr farage visited the constituency he lost in 2015, south thanet. His trip comes a day after his opponent, conservative candidate craig mackinlay, was been charged with allegedly was charged with allegedly overspending in the 2015 general Election Campaign. Mr mackinlay denies any wrongdoing. Youre watching bbc news at six minutes past eight. A small scale trial into treatment of Ovarian Cancer has produced promising results. Our Health Correspondent reports. Marianne heath has advanced Ovarian Cancer. There are very few drugs to treat this type of cancer and the ones that exist can no longer help her. So she says when she was asked to take part in a trial for a new drug shejumped at the chance. Well, i decided to go on the trial because there were no other way out for me, there were no options presented so it was the trial Orjust Radiotherapy so i decided to do the trial first. The trial, run by the institute of Cancer Research and the royal marsden, aims to test the safety of the new drug, known as onx 0801. It involved just 15 women all with advanced Ovarian Cancer. The result, tumours shrank significantly in almost half of the women over the course of five weeks. One of the fantastic things about this new drug thats being developed here is that it has so few side effects, compared to traditional chemotherapy. And thats because it specifically targets cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unharmed. This drug attacks the tumour and you see very encouraging Tumour Responses but you dont see the common side effects like hair loss or sore mouth or diarrhoea or susceptible to infections as seen with other chemotherapy. But the scientists are urging caution. They say it was a very small study and its too early to know whether the success could be replicated in a larger group of patients. They now want to plan the next phase of the trial. Sophie hutchinson, bbc news. A major Clinical Trial has also found that thousands of men being treated for advanced Prostate Cancer could benefit from taking an existing treatment much earlier. Cancer research uk found that combining the drug abiratarone with another drug used in the initial phase of Hormone Therapy cuts the risk of dying by nearly forty per cent. Abiratarone is normally used when other Hormone Treatments have failed. We have been speaking to a Senior ScienceInformation Officer at Cancer Research uk, and she told us more about the research. The research looked at a group of men who were at risk of their cancer spreading, or who were risk of treatment not working, and they found that when they combined the normal treatment, where they reduce hormones, and combine it with the other drug, a greatly improved survival compared to just the Hormone Therapy on its own. Statins, which are usually prescribed to lower cholesterol, could help reduce the risk of dying from Breast Cancer by 27 percent, according to a new study. Scientists in china who analysed research involving 200,000 women, found patients who took the drug were less likely to see their cancer return. Charities have welcomed the news but say more Clinical Trials are needed. The Consumer Group which is calling on British Airways to create an automatic Compensation System for passengers who are affected by serious Flight Delays and cancellations. It comes a week after a major it failure caused hundreds of the Airlines Flights to be grounded. Heres our Business Correspondent joe lynam. The images of the week from ba. Passengers waiting for flights, some of which ended up being cancelled. The Compensation Bill could exceed £100 million for the airline. Ba says it will treat customers fairly and refund legitimate expenses but consumer advocates say that is not enough. In a letter to the chief executive, it says compensation should be automatic for passengers out of pocket. They should not have to apply directly to airlines for a refund. An Automated System would save time and money for ba as well as prevent companies from making profit from misery of others. People are entitled to money but they are not given it automatically. Passengers are often not realising what they are entitled to. The airlines can pay compensation because they know what flight you were on and what you are entitled to and we think that should be the rules. It is in other sectors in energy and water where you are automatically paid compensation if you do not receive service. In response, ba said it had put Additional Resources into its call centres to process claims quickly as possible. One group that is not out of pocket are investors in bas parent company. Its shares were up this week despite the woe endured by customers. The headlines the Prime Minister has insisted that the conservative position on tax hasnt changed, and that she is hoping to lower taxes. He took the second set 7 5 then didnt drop a game in the third as he booked his place in the third as he booked his place in the fourth round againstjohn isner. It isa the fourth round againstjohn isner. It is a big win for me. It was never going to be easy today. He is a really tough guy to play against, especially this early in a major stop he came out playing very aggressive, serving very well at the beginning. It was tough, but i managed to turn it around and played some really good stuff at the end, so some really good stuff at the end, so it was a very positive win for me. Kyle edmund took his match against Kevin Anderson of south africa to five sets. Anderson proved too strong in the end. He will now meet marian cilic in the fourth round. He timed his run perfectly to give trainer aidan obrien a perfectly to give trainer aidan 0brien a i perfectly to give trainer aidan obrien a i to in the race, a six victory over as well. A sixth victory over as well. A sixth victory as well. Lets go back to the general election. With less than a week till the country heads to the ballot box, reality checks presenter has been. Questions have been raised about how reliable the polls are. In the last three days, we have had polls putting the conservative leader anywhere between three and 14 , so have the pollsters lost their mojo . There have been problems in the past, most notably, of course, during the general Election Campaign in 2015, when the polls said there would be a hung parliament, but of course, the conservatives as won an outright majority, so whats going on . Lets ask a majority, so whats going on . Lets aska man majority, so whats going on . Lets ask a man who really should know. There is a persistent issue, which is how do we avoid over estimating labour and underestimating the conservatives . That was a problem that re emerged quite starkly in 2015 and is a problem that the industry have been further trying to work on to avoid this time around. After the 2015 election, the British Polling Council held an enquiry which concluded that polls failed because their samples werent truly representative of the voting population. In particular, they overestimated the number of young people who would vote. Now they have changed their methods, including putting a different weight on results by looking at educational background and interest in politics, and estimating how many people will buy. Different Polling Companies have different methods, which makes the numbers hard to interpret, even for the experts. People likely to vote in an election and are interested a re vote in an election and are interested are more likely to be willing to participate in polls come about the problem of that is that you have failed to adequately identify who will not make it to the polls, and if you get that wrong and overestimate the level of turnout amongst a group in our society that is likely to vote for one party rather than another, then your poll can be wrong. At the beginning, all the polls pointed towards an overwhelming conservative victory. 0ver overwhelming conservative victory. Over the course of the campaign, the gap has narrowed. All the dots are individual polls. The line shows how they have been moving. In the last few weeks, labour has risen dramatically, but still below the tories. Yougov has tried to use its data to forecast the likely result in every seat, which has led to the most eye catching prediction of all a most eye catching prediction of all a hung parliament. That is out of kilter with pretty much every other forecasts. The thing is, though, which method will be the most accurate . Someone is likely to look pretty smart and others will end up with egg on their faces once we know the result on the 9th ofjune. Chris morris reporting. In Northern Ireland, next weeks vote will be the fourth time voters have gone to the fourth time voters have gone to the polls in 13 months. How much does identity affect the vote . Chris butler reports. To understand politics and how people vote in Northern Ireland, you have to understand just how important identity is, and that is expressed in a whole range of ways, like music, dancing, all kinds of culture. Most people here regard themselves as coming from one of two traditions. They see themselves as either british or irish, and those routes run very deep. The router yea rs, routes run very deep. The router years, traditions like this, kenny, they are important, both politically and personally. The element being pa rt and personally. The element being part of a band allows me to stand up for what i believe in and make sure that our heritage and tradition never goes away. Heritage and tradition are important here. Most Protesta Nts Tradition are important here. Most protestants tend to vote for unionist candidates and catholics tend to vote for republicans. That is not always the case. There are cioss is not always the case. There are Cross Community candidates, but even that phrase gives you the idea that there are two communities, according toa there are two communities, according to a lot of people. That is expressed in a lot of ways, such as sport. There are different teams supported by both communities, and different sports played by Protesta Nts A Nd Different Sports played by protestants and catholics. There is an awful lot that is shared right across what some people see as a divide, paddy. In the north of ireland, i believe that both cultures should be respected equally, not one is greater than the other, you know. Ialso equally, not one is greater than the other, you know. I also believe in this day and age the nhs and education, especially the recent cuts, should be looked at in more detail. That is a political thing thatis detail. That is a political thing that is in common between the two. But beyond that, you take a look at culture, you can see all things in common, between ulster scots dancers and irish dancers, between flute bands and irish traditional musicians. Society has a lot that it shares, but sometimes it can be difficult for politicians to see across what is seen as a traditional divide. A scientist has called for beavers to be reintroduced in the uk. A study has shown they have a beneficial impact on wildlife and water quality. Our Environment Correspondent has details. This site is a scientific experiment reintroducing beavers. In six years, a pair of sharp toothed beavers has re engineered this woodland into a wetland. They fell the willow trees to lie horizontally because they like to chew the bark off the vertical sprouts. Their stick dams have recreated the sort of landscape that existed before beavers were hunted to extinction. This is another of the ponds created by beavers. This demonstrates how much they can re engineer the landscape. Here, it looks like there is grass growing out of the ground. Wrong. This is a beaver stick dam, right underneath me. The place has been shaped by the teeth of rodents. These are beaver sticks. You can see the teeth marks where they have cut them off the tree. They use these to create the dams, and the way that they have manipulated the site has been dramatic. We have had a whole range of different species coming in, bats, amphibians, lots of wetland plants. It has been incredible. This site used to have 11 clumps of frogspawn. In scotland, where beavers have brought back, some landowners have angrily complained that they have damaged farmland, trees and water courses. The nfu fear unintended consequences of Beaver Reintroduction but they say they are awaiting the formal publication of results from the devon trial site. The scientists working here say the beavers have notjust improved water quality. They have also helped to protect downstream areas from flooding by slowing heavy rainfall with their dams. They want creatures like this reintroduced nationwide. Not all are convinced, but the beavers here are making their own watery case. Now, the weather with darren.
