As the forces sweetheart during world war two, has died at the age of 103. The Us Supreme Court has ruled against the Trump Administration over its bid to end a programme protecting hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. Daca, or deferred action for childhood arrivals, was set up by president obama, giving legal status to undocumented young people, whore known as dreamers. Nada tawfik reports. Say it loud, say it clear immigrants are welcome here news at the Supreme Courts ruling was a ray of light to dreamers living with the bleak prospect of deportation from the only home theyve ever known. After years of legal battles, the nations highest court rejected president trumps attempt to end daca protections for about 700,000 young undocumented immigrants. Chiefjustice john roberts joined the courts four more liberal members and wrote in the majority opinion that the administrations move was unlawful because it was arbitrary and capricious. Jose martinez, a dreamer from california, says the years of uncertainty were traumatising. I have cried, ithink, many more times in the past four years than in my whole life. I will immediately terminate president obamas illegal executive order on immigration. This is a major blow to president trumps hard line immigration policy that he made central to his 2016 campaign. On twitter, he called the decision horrible and politically charged. Leaders, rejoiced. But democrats, including congressional leaders, rejoiced. I cried tears ofjoy when i heard the decision. These wonderful daca kids and their families have a huge burden lifted off their shoulders, and now they can just work and live and become americans, as they want, and i am confident they will become american citizens someday soon. Joe biden said if elected president , he would work to make daca permanent by sending a bill to congress on his first day in office. And president 0bama expressed the need for leaders willing to fight for immigrants. The courts ruling means officials will have to provide a more robust reason if it wishes to end the programme. Its not yet clear how the administration will respond, given several recent court defeats. So what weve seen over the last two weeks is a time change that could be potentially disastrous for the Trump Administration, and this just months away from the president ial election. Youve got the ruling on lgbtq, youve got the daca decision, youve got a ruling on sanctuary powers in california. Daca has broad bipartisan support. Despite that though, the programmes future remains uncertain. The Supreme Court decision is just one victory for dreamers hoping to one day be recognised as american citizens. Nada tawfik, bbc news. Lets cross to the city of round rock in texas, and speak to daca recipient and so called dreamer metzli sanchez. Youre a dakar recipient doctor recipient. Put this into context for us. What if the decision had gone the other way . I. Just you mentioning it now and thinking about it, its paralysing. So much anxiety because we were. Weve had this perfection for a couple years now, its going to be something it will definitely pause any plans that i had with for the future and it would just cause. We already live in uncertainty, so it would have just caused a 180 degrees of uncertainty and not knowing. So now that the Supreme Court has made this decision, what happens for you Going Forward . Because its still a rather uncertain position that you are in. So Going Forward, its definitely a sign of relief. Its protected for now, but what we have to understand about doc, its just a band aid solution to toa its just a band aid solution to to a bigger problem. Daca. There are so many in my category are not protected. Going forward, this is a step in the right direction. For me personally, i just have in the right direction. For me personally, ijust have to make sure im doing everything on my end to make sure im set up well. Preparing for the worst, hoping for the best. Keep reapplying for daca every two yea rs reapplying for daca every two years and make sure im doing things correctly on my end. Also on the same note, continuing to fight and voice the concerns of the undocumented community in the united states. Just briefly, thinking about the future, what does daca need to become . How would it eventually lead to change . So daca isjust the two year permit that we can apply to every two years. It doesnt clear us for deportation, itjust doesnt clear us for deportation, it just makes doesnt clear us for deportation, itjust makes us lesser priority. Even though i can work, im not allowed to travel outside the united states. I can even travel to the border, even though im on the border, even though im on the us side. There is always a potential risk of being contained. I cant vote. Even though i pay taxes, im not eligible for aid. So theres that. What a more permanent solution looks like is a pathway to citizenship. If congress was going to pass a clea n congress was going to pass a clean pathway to citizenship, it would mean not putting our lives in danger if anything goes wrong. So making sure that having a more without the fear if something were to go wrong for us, trying to attain that citizenship. Definitely a more permanent solution would be us citizenship without risk of deportation. Thank you so much, best of luck. John bolton, one of the most prominent and experienced National Security experts in the usa and a man who served as president trumps National Security adviser until last year, has written a book which contains a series of damning allegations about the Trump Administration. White house lawyers have been trying to prevent publication, as our north america correspondent nick bryant reports. He was Donald TrumpsNational Security adviser a staunch conservative his Foreign Policy right hand man. Butjohn bolton is now publishing a tell all memoir that reads like an indictment of the president. Among the damning allegations is that donald trump pleaded with his chinese counterpart, xijinping, at the g20 summit injapan to help him achieve victory in this years president ial election. Its been reported he said, make sure i win. In the midst of a trade dispute, there was hammering american farmers, he wanted the chinese to buy Agricultural Products from rural states, vital for his reelection. The book claims there were embarrassing gaps in Donald TrumpsForeign Policy knowledge and that at a meeting with theresa may in 2018, he expressed surprise that britain was a nuclear power. Another allegation is that donald trump offered to stop a criminal investigation into a turkish company, as a personal favour to president erdogan. And was easily flattered by other authoritarian leaders such as vladimir putin. I think putin thinks he can play him like a fiddle. I think putin is smart, tough, i think he sees that hes not faced with a serious adversary here. I dont think hes worried about donald trump. John is a. He has strong views on things, but thats ok. This was donald trump speaking warmly aboutjohn bolton before he left the white house. But today, the president called him a wacko, whose book is made up of lies and fake stories. He was a disgruntled boring fool who only wanted to go to war but never had a clue. What a dope. Why you keep hiring people that you believe are wackos and liars . Donald trump remained stony faced tonight as journalists asked him to address these bolton bombshells. At the white house is making a last ditch legal attempt to block the books publication on National Security grounds and also trashing its author. Hes doing it for the money. Thats pretty clear. And my view is that its the washington swamps equivalent of revenge porn. But these are the sort of allegations that would ordinarily imperil a presidency and fuel demands for impeachment. Donald trump, of course, has already been impeached but his republican allies didnt vote to remove him from office then and wont do so now. Never before have we seen a us president walk away from so Many Political car crashes, but he faces reelection in november and ultimately the American Voters will decide his fate. Nick bryant, bbc news, new york. And in further bad news for the us president , Facebook Says it has removed Trump Campaign adverts containing a red triangle symbol that was used by the nazis to label their political prisoners. The ads were aimed against antifa, the left wing grouping of activists that mr trump describes as violent agitators. Facebook said the ads violated its policy against organized hate. He obviously wanted to beat we wa nt he obviously wanted to beat we want to be careful to allow a dissemble. We dont see either of those. We dont allow it at the platform. Thats what over this ad, and anywhere that symbol is used, we would take the same action. We will be consistent in enforcing, either oui consistent in enforcing, either our systems identifies as symbols and as youd expect, when we identified Something Like this, we look for other insta nces like this, we look for other instances where it might appear so we can instances where it might appear so we can find and remove it automatically, and also if theres something we missed because we certainly arent perfect, we would take action there as well. Track and trace a scene essential, and the uk is far from the only country grappling with how to implement it effectively. Lockdowns are easing around the world, and a new approach is taking centre stage. Tracing and quarantining every contact. We will have a test track and trace operation that will be world beating. We need that tool so we could open up the economy. But can track and trace the liver and can we trust it . Deliver. Time and again in march, we heard about flattening the curve and in most countries, it happened. These are infection rates in the uk, italy and france. Because of graphs like these, lockdowns are being eased. Now attention is turning to controlling new outbreaks. The who is clear. What is Contact Tracing . Well, this is about countries knowing who has the virus and who they been in contact with. It comes in many forms. Some systems are identical, some manual, some both. Some are digital. Some are voluntary, like in australia, germany and singapore. Some such as china and south korea are definitely not. However you do this, there are major challenges. 0ne one of the reasons is personal data. Phones are being used to monitor proximity to other people and location. The data is not always anonymous. China and south korea monitor the location of people with the virus and their payment history. They dont ask permission. Both have largely tracked the virus effectively. In south korea at least, theres awareness this approach is unusual. Scary is the word for many people, unacceptably scary, whatever the hope well, its suspended at that. Norway has suspended its app. Germany has been mindful of its concerns. It doesnt log a location, but there is an acknowledged tension here between protecting peoples privacy and how well the virus is tracked. Theres also the challenge of getting people to sign up. The more people, the more effective the system. If youre a democracy, getting most people to take part is hard. Singapore wanted three quarters of the people to have it out and got a third and not all are using it. 0ne senior official says there is a trust issue. Australias target was a0 . So far, its reached 25 . It success and containing covid 19 mean it has less need for the app. In moscow, a quarantine tracking app has been finding people for being outside when they werent. Australias app has struggled to get bluetooth connections with all contact nearby. Then theres england. In may, the government said the government had the duty to download the app. The uk government has announced its scrapping its first plan in favour of a new version that collects less data. Which leads us to manual track and trace. In other words, tracking done by people. From ebola, small pot and hiv, this can be highly effective. Arguably the most effective. Among the worlds most afflicted countries. Johnsons promise . We know in its first week, the system of 8000 people, over 5000 handed over the contacts and around 30,000 of those contacts agreed to self isolate. Its a start, but like in many countries with high case numbers, is far from comprehensive. For all the reasons discussed, we are still in the early stages of building it. Thanks to ros atkins. Stay with us on bbc news, still to come we return to wuhan to see how the chinese city has emerged from being the centre of a global pandemic. The investigation looked at 27 different countries, and found that the total number of deaths caused by the virus both directly and indirectly is much worse than the 400,000 fatalities reported. Afghanistan is one country that its near impossible to collect accurate data. Ali hussaini has this report from kabul. This man has been a grave digger for a this man has been a grave diggerfor a decade. This man has been a grave diggerfora decade. He has seen violence and conflict and says nothing prepared him for this outbreak. Exhausted by his workload, he has had to hire more staff to help him with the digging. Translation in the past, death or lower. One or two funerals each week, perhaps a maximum of five a week. Now we have ten to 15 funerals a day. Some days, we have 20 to 30 funerals here. The numbers are high. Officially, there has been around 500 deaths across afghanistan. But research we have collected suggests the figure could be much higher. We monitored 50 graveyards across kabul in may. The number of funerals jumped to more than ten to 30, a 350 increase. Some religious leaders said a stigma attached the virus means large numbers of deaths are going unreported. Translation people hide their sicknesses and if they died, people wont say it is because of coronavirus. Because no one will show up at the funeral. The official numbers of cases are very low, but if you go to the villages, you see more numbers. People hide it. Translation not everyone thinks its a good idea this man was a famous actor in afghan cinema. He said he wanted to be open about his fathers death. Friendly two he died at the age of 72 years old. Just before his death, we got the conversation hes had coronavirus. I dont understand why some people think think its shameful to have coronavirus. Its gods will. You dont get coronavirus for doing something bad. The stigma of covid 19 spreads just as fast as the disease itself. So perhaps we will never know the full effect in afghanistan.
