Im john berman. Those stories and more right now this hour. Two major stories about computer hackers. One involving criminals who can get into your home computer. The other is an historic case of cyberespionage. Attorney general eric holder announcing for the first time the u. S. Filed charges against Chinese Military officers. Theyre accused of hacking into several major u. S. Companies to steal their secrets. This case should serve as a wakeup call to the seriousness of the ongoing cyberthreat. These criminal charges represent a Ground Breaking step forward in addressing that threat. Well talk about the personal computer hacking story in just a moment. First, evan perez is here. Lets talk about this case with china. Historic to say the least. Thats right. Its the first time that the u. S. Has ever charged Chinese Government officials with hacking. They are talking about the secretive unit of the pla, the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army thats based in shanghai and that specializes in stealing secrets from u. S. Companies. This is something the u. S. Says is costing billions of dollars to the u. S. Economy talking about jobs at risk here and this is a big deal because chinese for years have been saying give us proof. So now we have the proof. Talk about how prosecution will work. You talk about china and the United States. How widespread is all of this . The u. S. Says this is a major problem. Chinese are the number one spies on u. S. Soil now. This is after the cold war when we were most worried about the russians and now this is about economic espionage and getting an advantage in their economy to try to steal stuff from the United States to try to advance Chinese Companies and they say this is something that is just the beginning. Chinese have been saying show us the proof. Today the United States is showing the proof. Any response . We havent heard from the chinese. The u. S. Is giving examples. Westinghouse big name brand u. S. Companies that are very High Tech Companies that are doing business in china and around the world. Could be serious ripple effects here. We want to turn to another story. The fbi and police in several countries are taking down dozens of alleged cybercriminals. Were talking about people who break into your home computer through your computer and then use your webcam and your keyboard against you. They do it with a Computer Program called blackshade that comes as an innocent email. Always does, right. It invites you to open it. Evan perez is also covering this joined by lori siegel covering the howto angle this. Lets start with the arrest. Who is the fbi after here . The fbi and police and 17 countries in europe and canada went over 100 people. They did about 300 searches all over europe and canada and basically the fbi says that these guys have been hacking into your computers and doing bank fraud and extorting peoples money from them and we have a bit of an explanation of the fbi who tells us a little bit about how this goes down. Blackshades can recover your passwords and all of your access credentials so when you believe is the secure entry into a bank website has been hijacked if you will by a cyber criminal. The key word there is hijacked. Many times people dont even know their computers have been infected. How are you supposed to know . How on earth are you supposed to know that youve become victimized by Something Like this if it is happening in the shadow of the cyberworld . Its really difficult to know. Whats so scary about this is that you could be hijacked you would have no idea someone could remotely turn on your webcam and as you type key strokes look and capture your bank account information. Theres also a tactic that these hackers use called social engineering to a point where you think dont click on a random link. Thats how they install malware on their computer. Theyll use social engineering so find out a bit about you and target an email to you or facebook message or something you might trust or want to click on. Once you click on it its on your computer. Little idea its even there and you have stuff happen where we look at what happened to miss teen usa which was pretty awful and thats how this really happens. Thats outrageous what happened to miss teen usa. She was being looked at. Her webcam was spying on her without her knowing. I mean i dont understand the technology. I dont understand how people can do that to these machines. Its essentially malware. Its basic. Whats scary is Something Like 40 and people are buying this on the dark web and its very easy to do. Its literally as easy as downloading this and getting access to this software and targeting other users. The technology is a bit like that remote administrative tool that even some of the Tech Companies use if they want to remotely access your computer from home. Similar technology. Similar software with legitimate uses where people want to be at home and get to their computer at work or at work get to their computer at home. Thats one of the legitimate uses. This takes a dark turn. This takes a different turn. Thee are sophisticated. Employees would help problem solve if you downloaded software and it wouldnt work right against your victims, they had people that could help you do that. What do i do to avoid this besides never opening an attachment ever . Do not click on anything you dont know the source. Update your Antivirus Software on your computer. Be very careful about connecting to wifi in general. I was at a hacking conference. Someone showed me how they can hack traffic lights by exploitingexploit ing wifi. Thats a tough one. I get free wifi wherever i can. Now he realize if its free maybe not worth it. Your debut this hour. Thank you both for being here on our program. Lets look at her headlines making news this hour. The first case of a deadly virus called mers middle east respiratory syndrome transmitted inside the United States. The good news is also crews are still fighting those fires in Southern California but heres the good news. Theyre getting a bit of a break from better milder and cooler weather. Lots of people who had to evacuate are now back in their homes. Thats good news there. New allegations about deadly wait lists at va hospitals. First this phoenix hospital and now a whistle blowing doctor says veterans with serious heart conditions brain tumors waited months for care at the albuquerque va hospital. Well speak live to our own Investigative Reporter who was the first to expose wait list fraud at va hospitals. Still ahead, the buzz over the billboard awards. The white house says president obama is madder than hell about reports of treatment delays at hospitals serving veterans but was the president warned years earlier of the deadly practice . A the Washington Times report says Obama Administration did receive clear notice even before mr. Obama took office. Drew griffin has been way out in front of this story. He was the first to expose the disturbing allegations at several va hospitals reporting that at least 40 veterans died while waiting for care in phoenix. Drew joins us now from atlanta. Talk about this the Washington Times story first. That president obama and his team was briefed before he even took office. Reporter it was transition time. He was trying to learn about problems he was going to inherentinherit and take over as president. This was one of them specifically telling staff that the wait time data is unreliable. What is a little bit startling about that Washington Times report to me is everyone should have known that decade ago. Thats when the Government Accountability office first began sounding the alarm that the data that they were getting from the va on these wait times was completely unreliable and that warning has been sounded year after year after year by their Health Director there. I want to bring up one more point. The president in 2007 senator barack obama, gave a speech to the vfw in which he specifically addressed these wait times. No veteran should have to fill out a 23page claim to get care or wait months or years to get an appointment at the va. He vowed to fix this back in 2007. Apparently was briefed on it again in 2008. And if hes been watching our reports or getting the Inspector General reports, its hard to believe everybody in washington didnt know this was going on. And then add to this. You talk about sounding the call and theres another story from the daily beast reporting allegations of another hospital with these secret wait lists that weve been talking. This one in albuquerque, new mexico. One of the doctors allege that veterans with serious heart disease, even brain tumors waited months for care. Do you have a sense of just how widespread and how systemic this is . This is what we know right now. In ten different states there are allegations and or Inspector General reports going out and looking into wait list problems denied delayed care which led to adverse results adverse medical results. We know of four states where delays in care led to deaths. We are getting tips now and whistleblowers coming faster than we can check out. I just got one from a doctor saying a delay in care in one of these hospitals caused a man to get his leg amputated. A diabetic patient. A doctor recommended immediate procedure being done on this persons foot. He had to wait five months. Infection spread and his leg was gone. Were getting those tips from all over the country because one doctor in phoenix was brave enough to come forward and sound the alarm on this and that kind of although its been reported out there for a long time his courage to come forward and talk about this alleged secret list gave many others in the va system the courage to come forward with their information as well. Drew griffin, thanks so much for being with us. As we said you were way out in front of this. Cutting edge of reporting here thats causing these reports to come in and hopefully will help cause serious reform in this system so veterans get the care they need. Thats the important thing we want to make sure they get the care they need. How frustrating. I thought how frustrating for doctors that say this is what they need. Im here to provide care and their hands or tied in many cases. Infuriating. 16 minutes after the hour. Then theres this. Back from beyond the grave. How Michael Jackson moon walked through the billboard awards with a stunning and shall we say slightly shocking performance. You, my friend are a master of diversification. Nischelle turner joins us from beautiful los angeles. Hes crazy. Thats out of the way. You know i want to know what people think of this. I know a lot of people were debating whether they thought it was cool or if it was creepy. Is this a good way to honor the music icon that we lost or too bizarre . Its all of the above. It may have been a lot creepy. A lot of cool. A little bit bizarre. I think all of that put together makes it fascinating and thats what makes good television. Thats why were talking about it. I was looking at it last night and some people were really expressing shock at how lifelike they thought this looked and others said it was disrespectful and distasteful and we should let him rest in peace. Can i say, the cool versus creepy argument having to do with Michael Jackson, excuse me for saying that isnt that a summation of the last 20 years of his life . There are a lot of questions about this type of thing in general. How did they pull this out . Send emails to john berman. Talk to me about how they pulled it off. It looks more sophisticated. Yeah this one was pretty sophisticated. They are not releasing all of the details. They are keeping a bit of mystery there. If you hear he was performing his new hit slave to the rhythm. I dont know all of the details but according to the shows hoe producer it was the result of six months of filming and planning. They brought in longtime associates of Michael Jacksons to choreograph the hologram and other dancers. They did do a lot. They took a lot of time on it as well. While we have you, i want to talk about Something Else making headlines. Michael sams reality show on own. Not happening now. What happened here . I dont know if we had anything to do with this guys. It wasnt too long after we had a pretty spirited debate on friday whether he should or shouldnt do this series or reality show that the Oprah Winfrey network announced it would postpone the series. They said they did not want to hurt michael sams chances of making it on the rams which is some of the argument that we were presenting on friday. The network said that postponing the project in their words would give michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team. Michael sams agent also released a statement saying the delay will allow him to have total focus on football which is what we heard him say from the beginning that he wanted to do and ensure there would be no distractions to his teammates. In the reporting over the weekend from various media outlets, i did see where the rams said they didnt even know about this series before it was announced. In a meeting with the team both sides decided, you know what . Lets back off. Probably because the rams said slow down. Make the team and film whatever you want. Robin roberts was on over the weekend with reliable sources and talked about the issue with michael sam and kiss when he was drafted. Lets listen to what robin had to say. What was he supposed to do . Shake his hand . Really. I think it was one of those moments also when you saw it happen it was spontaneous. It was natural. So quick. When you see the picture it seems like its different than what occurred. That doesnt matter. It doesnt matter. Hes happy like every other young man was happy. Hes happy. He has that moment. Now he can concentrate on playing football and making a team and well see what happens next. Can i just say im a proud missouri tiger so i hope he becomes rookie of the year in my unbiassed opinion. Want to bring in brian stelter, host of cnns reliable sources and sally kohn. You have history with the New York Times. That was my boss until six months ago. Having worked there for a little while. Took not only the high road, the highest road she could have saying nothing negative about the times even though im sure shes not feeling positive. She talked about the highlight of her career to have worked there and about how her late father always was more impressed by his daughters from what they failed at rather than what they succeeded at and what they recovered from rather than what they succeeded at. Interesting nuggets. You know for us media types, it seems so important. Remind folks at home why this is a story important for all of us to be mindful of. She was the first female executive editor of the New York Times. Thats historic because of the role that the New York Times occupancy in the media and then being the first female head. She didnt last very long. And the nature of how she was fired doesnt sort of it doesnt tend to follow the kind of story lines. Media organizations understand how to do damage control for other media. Spend more time with their family. They know how to cover it up and look it papered over. They didnt do it. This is ugly. I dont think she wanted to go quietly. Thats possible. She put out nasty statements and for people in the media theres a general intrigue of what happened and why did it happen but a lot of people in the media especially in the womens media, im on a lot of womens journalist list serves and they are outraged. They are outraged and terrified because it just doesnt smell right. She worked hard. She did her job better than many men and treated worse. Whats up with that . You said this thing hasnt been handled particularly well. Its been brutal. Let me read you what came out over the weekend. He was explaining in detail why he claims he let her go. During her tenure i heard repeatedly from newsroom colleagues about arbitrary Decision Making and failure to consult and bring colleagues with her, inadequate communication and public mistreatment of colleagues. Thats an unusual thing to say about someone after they are out the door. As someone that worked there, those words ring true to me. On the other hand public mistreatment of colleagues isnt that what hes kind of doing now by putting out this statement . Its ugly how two narratives have set up. She was treated unfairly because shes a woman and paid less. The other narrative is she was bad boss. Theres truth to both of those. Its possible she wasnt a great manager but unequal expectations for women when they reach the top of an industry. Thats why this matters. Some of those words that we heard pushy, unapproachable et cetera et cetera if those were used for a man the argument made would be those would be good characteristics. They wouldnt be called pushy but called assertive. There is some of this to welcome who have risen through ranks over media over any business it rings hollow. It is also possible that she was fired for legitimate reasons and concerns and we can also say it looks like there may have been a gender way to which she was talked about and is now being talked about. Both men and women can be bad bosses im told. Also great bosses and editors. Men get more shots. Thats the scary thing. After two years, this is over opposed to lots of men in the industry top ten newspapers in the u. S. Do not have a female editor. Great to have you here with us. Good discussion. He called the students immature and arrogant. I want to bring back in brian stelter, host of reliable sources. Will has joined the mix. It wasnt crowded enough. Youre the new kid on the block. We raised a generation of kids we pick up when they fall down and tell them theyre special their entire lives. This is what you get. The wall street journal wrote about this. From 1987 to 2008 there were 48 protests that resulted in 21 cancellations. Since 2009, 95 protests that resulted in 39 cancellations. Were not capable of hearing disagreements. I dont think im too far off where you stand on that. Isnt it a right of passage to question authority and protest things in college . Isnt that what those College Years are about to take a stand . I was a student protester. I love students protesting. It would be nice if students were protesting things that mattered which is to say if iraq war were still happening, protest that. Dont protest and change Condoleezza Rices heart and mind about things. Go protest, go join the fast food workers striking in your community. Do something that matters. This means i oppose you and not shut up. It turned into shut up. I agree. Protest outside of the commencement speech. Dont applaud in the commencement speech if you dont agree. I dont agree with the way that will denigrated a whole generation. As a country were not good to listen to people we dont agree with anymore. Thats a value. I feel like i have to speak up here. Is this an issue of us being grumpy old people . I dont think youre grumpy. I dont think theres an entire generation thats entitled. I get excited when i see students protesting trying to figure out what boundaries of free speech are. These students have grown up in 9 11 age and in the occupy age and i understand for example on that campus upset about how students were treated. Uc davis where those kids were sprayed. That was disgusting. I like that those students stood up against it. To the point thats interesting, we have to put the responsibility on the adults if you will. If they said we want you to apologize for this or else that person then said he wasnt going to give the commencement speech so maybe he should stand up and take a stand on his own. Adults have shown no backbone to the students of these universities. A commencement Honorary Degree was given and then rescinded because students protested. The other thing is i do appreciate you suggesting that you see student activism as a good thing. We have to recognize it. They cant hear opposite opinions. Whoa i dont christine cant speak because imf put strings on their bailouts. Having a conversation about critiques of imf policies is appropriate. What we should do in our universities left and right is having those debates. Thats not what happened. She was told she shouldnt come to college to speak. Theres a larger problem in our country that we have become polarized and if we want young people to sharpen their ideas and sharpen their minds, they do that not by holding opposing opinions at bay but by inviting them in and engaging with them. Canif truth and information lean liberal, thats not those universities. There it is. We just turned it into a 30minute segment. That stunned me into silence. One thing to hear republicans say its too soon and throwing water on the fire but to have people in her own party. Do they have a point . Theres a coronation going on for Hillary Clinton and the democratic party. Thats problematic. You want someone to challenge you on ideas and someone to get tv time with in the iowa caucus or New Hampshire primaries. However, its an uptown problem. This time around what is she going to do . Disappear completely . Even if she did, the media would fill the void with shes planning her campaign in private. She must be running. I dont see a choice here. I think karl roves talking about brain damage was unseemly. Health matters. Dwight eisenhower had a terrible heart problem or Ronald Reagan not just about Ronald Reagans age but he was shot in 1981 and almost died and our country pulled behind him. We shouldnt be talking about health as fair game. You think it is a fair issue to discuss. Its a fair issue to discuss. Its a fair issue to discuss. We dont want to hammer people on their health woes. Hillary clinton would be 69. Thats the new 50, 69 now. You do make a good point. Its not 69 of 20 years ago. Its 69 of todays world. Women have a longer life span than men. If the republicans the currents of our time. I just dont know what the gain here is, unless theres some incident that happens during the campaign. She doesnt come across as someone wozhos going issues. I think theres a fear in the Republican Party that shes godzilla shes going to stomp on their party. This is a very important Midterm Election going on right now. And they need to show their base the republicans, that theyre not going to give a corenation or anoint hillary. Theyre not going to be timid. What karl rove is doing is energizing his base in a Midterm Election year. You wrote this he can give Hillary Clinton a run for her money. I think in the state of iowa caucus if he got in it. Because hes built a network of friends there, all along the mississippi river. Its heavily catholic. Joe bidens catholic. Hes not looking right now like hes going to enter it. He would be the one potential person that could get in and make it a bit of a race it the labor unions love him. Farmers love biden too. Well have to wait and see with he decides to make that plunge or not. That would be something. It could create quite an uncomfortable position for president obama i think. Yes, it would. At t and directv, two huge players, a deal worth almost 50 billion. Were told it is a very big deal but is it a good deal for all of us . Our Christine Romans is here along with Technology Analyst brett larson. Christine, explain why i care. Why you care is there are going to be fewer people providing these services in the end. Youre going to have fewer companies. The worry is fewer companies means less choice and potentially higher prices. This is a news flash, prices for your pay tv have been going up. Theyve been going up for a long time. The question is does this merger slow that ascent or make it faster . What they say they can do is bundle all kinds of services. At ts going to be able to bundle new services. Youre going to have more choices. Will you pay for it . Thats the question. Apparently this is going to affect people who arent even directv or at t customers. If youre a directv customer you have three years of everything being the same before you see changes. If youre an at t customer youll see all this bundled stuff. What if theres spirited competition between the new comcast and at t . What kind of deals might they have to have because theyre going after the same customers in the in some markets, though there are going to be fewer choices. Im skeptical. Whenever i hear about a merger like this i assume theyre just doing this to stick it to me. What can become of this . I think you hit on a lot of great points. But . But in the effects of a merger i think what were finding is more and more people want to watch content here on our mobile devices. It will give at t a huge bundle of content they can give you. They can effectively give you an at t directv app that directv nfl ticket by the way. If directv doesnt kneenegotiate for the nfl sunday ticket now the deal is off. Now i care. Now youll be able to watch everything. Talk about burying the lead to get bermans attention. Now im in. Thats the other thing, has to get over regulatory hurdles, right . I think once we get through that i really think the bundles aspect i think is where customers will win. Well be able to go into rural areas where you dont have a lot of choice. And theyre going to be able to come to you and say, look if you get your highspeed internet from us and your tv from us well sell it to you all for 100 bucks. And this was something you couldnt get beforehand. They dont really know where this business is going, do they . Its a shot in the dark. Were all moving towards mobile devices. Were all moving towards this cut the cable. I dont need cable tv in my house anymore. Dont listen to him, you all need cable tv in your house. You need the cable for the internet connection. Thats where i feel like were seeing a lot of these unusual mergers between big Wireless Companies and big directv, big satellite providers. Bottom line you feel like were probably going to see prices go up . The two things are prices are never going to go down health care and your cable bill. Thats the rule of law. Whether this merger slows it or we just dont know. I would hope to see some spurring in bringing more broadband to people by way of directv. Regulators might look more favorably on the deal. At some point, Net Neutrality what it mean why he needs to care. It could mean the nfl sunday ticket more expensive. Now i care. Bam. Christine romans great to have you here. Cable tv is essential. It is. As is this next story. Tell us. Everyone is holding their breath or dare i say, holding their nose. California chrome has been waiting for an answer. Whos California Chrome . The 3yearold colt who won the Kentucky Derby and the preakness stakes. And wants to run in the Belmont Stakes to win the third leg of the triple crown which hasnt happened in oh so many years. But he might not have been running. Why . Because hes been wearing these nasal strips. These nasal strips that help him breathe better. But new york state, for some reason did not allow them until now. New york racing officials have decided that California Chrome can wear these nasal strips when running. So we can all breathe easy. Right, breathe easy like California Chrome and mucus free. Its not a snoring issue he had. Those strips they make you look hot, even horses. Thats what he tells himself. Thank you for joining us at this the hour. Legal view starts right now. The u. S. Cyber war escalating to a whole new level this hour. The Justice Department says it now has positive proof of the Chinese Military, in fact officers of that military hacking and infiltrating americas leading industries. And if thats not bad enough hundreds more arrests here at home and abroad for hacking into your Bank Accounts peopling through your webcams and even worst than that
