And its more bigger and powerful than his, and my button works. Seriously, the words of the president. Just, shaping up to be a big morning because one of the men closest to the president calls out that Infamous Trump tower meeting calling it unpatriotic, and this is from the new steve bannon book, and even if you thought it was not treasonist, you should have called the fbi immediately. Our joe johns is at the white house with all of it. Good morning. Reporter good morning, poppy. One tweet from the president this morning on iran, a theme he handled yesterday, yesterday very busy, of course, two tweets on north korea, a total of 16 tweets on a variety of topics, the president going after, among other things, the palestinians. And thats something we want to focus on right now. The president threatened to with draw funding from the palestinians if he did not return to the negotiating table, the peace talk table indicating in his view we give hundreds of millions of dollars to the palestinians and ending up with a question, why should we continue to make these payments . Palestinians, of course, responding very curtly indicating they cannot be blackmailed. Thats what they said. Today the president will have a lot to talk about as he sits down to lunch with his secretary of state and secretary of defense and Vice President , and all of these issues on the table, and we will watch the president s twitter feed. Thank you. A little more than two weeks until a possible government shutdown, and key white house officials will sit down with leaders to discuss things. Suzanne malveaux is on the hill for us. Good morning. Good morning. Thats an urgent deadline. They are trying to meet january 19th to fund the government. And the budget director, mulvaney as well as mr. Short to sit down with democratic and republican leadership, nancy pelosi and shuck schumer and paul ryan and mitch mcconnell. They are trying to raise the spending cap for domestic and military programs, and if you talk to democrats its something completely different. What they are hoping on doing is leveraging what they have, and they do have some leverage here on the senate side, and they need the super majority and need democrats to get onboard to tie up the fate for the d. R. E. A. M. Ers, and they want legislation when the daca legislation expires in march, and they would like to see that tied to the budget. President trump so far says there has to be a border wall to accompany that. Democrats and republicans, various caucuses and coalitions are looking for some sort of compromise, National Security measures in addition to working with the d. R. E. A. M. Ers to make sure they are not deported as part of the budget deal, and aides to the lawmakers say they are willing to kick the can down the road once again and perhaps approve a shortterm stop gap measure to fund the government beyond the january 19th deadline while they work out the negotiation. Suzanne, a season of change in the senate today. Two new senators will be sworn in . Thats right. Mike pence will be part of the swearing in. Very historic, alabama, doug jones that won against roy moore really changing the face and also the makeup of the senate, a slim majority of republicans, 5149 now, and on the democratic side in terms of gay rights, gun control, those types of things, so dont expect theres going to be change there, but certainly making it hard for republicans to push forward their legislation. We are told former Vice President joe biden will be there and he was instrumental in getting doug jones over the finish line, and he did. Also Lieutenant Governor tina smith replacing senator franken, and shedding light and portraying a strong message against Sexual Harassment in congress. Suzanne malveaux on capitol hill for us. We are following all sorts of breaking news and headlines, including what poppy mentioned at the top of the show, steve bannon speaking to michael wolf, and they were talking about the meeting at trump tower in 2016 in the spring there between donald trump, jr. , and russians, promising dirt on Hillary Clinton. Steve bannon said this, if you thought this was not treasonous, you should have called the fbi immediately. Thats one of the remarkable quotes and there are many more we just learned about. Errol louis joining us, and a National Political reporter for real clear politics. Along from calling that meeting treasonous, they are going to crack trump junior. Its an extraordinary statement coming from steve bannon. I would have to say, though, Steve Bannons status as a political analyst and his insight has been considerably tarnished after the debacle in alabama, and so with that caveat you side, thats Important Information coming from the trump camp. So with the fighting that we know that was going on between the kushners and bannon factors, if that bursts into view in this sense, the Mueller Investigation and the congressional committees cannot overlook and unhear it. Steve bannon did not come on as Campaign Chair until august, and this happened in the spring, and what bannon may have learned about that we dont know. I apologize to all of you. This just broke as we were coming on air. I was looking at your faces, and you had the reaction like we did. This undercuts some of the arguments we heard from the loyalist. Steve bannon is saying this meeting was treasonous and unpatriotic, and isnt that worthy of an investigation . Yeah, i think a lot of people are thinking that. You have further indictments coming out, i think, from the Mueller Investigation. All of this is like another big drop in the water, and i think its very meaningful, i think, that this is coming from somebody like steve bannon. I do think that, you know, he does have a point of view on this. He does know whats happening behind the scenes, and this is a meaningful moment. Let me read you more and this is my first read in half of this as well. Bannon also said to michael wolf in this new book, he talked about Money Laundering, and he said you realize where this is going, this is all about Money Laundering and it goes through the deutsch bank and the kushner bank, and they are going to roll these two guys up saying play me or trade me. Why is he saying this and saying it now if hes a trump loyalist . I dont think hes a trump loyalist when it comes to the family. When he was campaigning for roy moore and he took a big dig at ivanka trump saying there was a special place this is very different, though. This is very different. The investigations are still going on and if bannon was not on the campaign at that time that will certainly raise a lot of questions that a lot of republicans and democrats on the committees need answers to. Will steve bannon still get his phone call answered. He does talk to him well, that was before this. Yeah. And other earth shattering news, and James Clapper thinks the kind of statements the president is making are dangerous. Listen. An untolled death and destruction here, and to me its very disturbing. Nobody in the white house knows what is kim jonguns ignition point, where one of these tweets is going to set him off and hes going to hit that button. So thats the question, is this a serious cause for concern . Does this make america less safe . I would have to say yes, not on somebody like the authority, but everything we know about this. We know the chinese contrary was widely touted, its not their client state. What we know is this dictator in north korea may have learned from the examples of Saddam Hussein and gadhafi, and they gave up weapons of mass destruction and ended up captured and executed. He can reach parts of the United States with missiles. This is simply not a time for the kind of crude taunts and the school yard foolishness coming out of the white house. Everybody should be very concerned. So on the flip side of the one person not concerned about it, and does not have the credentials of clapper, is michael flynn, jr. , the son that plead guilty to lying to the fbi. A lot of people think that he is speaking truth to power and this is what trump does. I have been hearing from a lot of republicans when he says anytime he says Something Like rocket man or fire and the fury, it gets them angry. They are really upset. They want to reign him in when he does this. They say its not good for the country. They dont think its good for the nation. Even among trump supporters, even though they like the president , they like what he does and what he stands for, they would rather he doesnt say this stuff on twitter . To a person, yeah. And this is a discussion that is brought up yet again is the issue of the president s mental stability. I am saying this because other people are saying it. Peter who now works for the New York Times says the twitter storms is alarming to watch and the president is not well. So you are hearing that from a fierce trump critic. Does it resonate anybody beyond people who are not fierce trump critics . I think it resinates around Different Community centers, republicans on capitol hill who are dealing with this, and especially since, you know, as the situation escalates, we dont have a clearcut plan from donald trumps. We have seen him talk about fire and fury, and stand up in front of the u. N. And talk about rocket man, and then we have heard him talking about diplomatic routes, and maybe its a good cop bad cop, but i think it resinates beyond the regular sorts, beyond the critics, because its a situation that is becoming increasingly its escalating. Yeah, and now the talks between the two countries, it comes in the middle of that. Thanks for playing, guys. Now you can go and read the article and see what we are talking about. The hotline is open after a year really more of escalating tension, and north korea and south korea established contact over the phone for 20 minutes. And then calling for the full release of its testimony to congress. Millions facing a monster storm moving up the east coast. That may look pretty, but its not fun, trust me. Its part of my new years resolution no more mayhem. Making sure your car is pulled in far enough. But not too far. You dont want to live with mom and dad forever, do you . Im making smoothies how do i check my credit score . Credit karma. Dont worry, its free. Credit karma. Give yourself some credit. When i met my team at ctca, they put together a comprehensive plan, that gave me an opportunity to accomplish my goals, and my dreams. Learn more at cancercenter. Com hotline between south korea and north korea sprung to life and theres hopes for maybe a thaw in relations. The olympics appears to be what prompted the two communications with the south overnight. This is the first time in a few years at least this communication line has been open. What was gained from that . Hey, poppy and john. It sounds like a big deal because it has been two years since this line has been dormant. They have been calling north korea twice a day for two years with no answer, and finally today the phone rang. What do they make of it . It depends on what north korea does next. And right on schedule, south korea got a phone call from north korea. There was a 20minute conversation. The first time this has happened in two years. We are told they discussed technical issues concerning the communication itself, and then there was a followup call later in the day, and north korea initiated that call and the followup call was saying that business for the day had been done. Not much there. South korean Officials Say there was no talk of future talks between the two sides or of north koreas participation in the Winter Olympics hosted by south korea next month, but thats the thought that precipitated this call, at least. We know kim jongun announced he wanted a north korean delegation to go to the games and the south korea side has been extremely receptive to that idea, and south korea reached out saying they should set a date for highlevel discussions on january 9th. They did take a first step in at least initiating the two phone calls to south korea. You just cant count on north korea at this point to continue to followup. We will see. Its not nothing, we just dont know how much it is just yet. Also this morning, palestinian officials firing back after President Trump threatened to cut aid. This is what the pal stillens a palestinians are saying. The president disqualified himself as a go between. Israel is responding and they are saying President Trumps statement puts the palestinians on notice, and we are joined from orrin lieberman. Sounds like it takes them off the bargaining table completely. Reporter after President Donald Trump recognized the capital of israel, that was one nail in the coffin and the palestinians said the u. S. Is no longer a broker and we reject anything they put on the table in terms of a peace process. Trump insists hes working on a process, and its mysterious we have not learned anything about it. The palestinian response that trumps threat to cut off aid was fury and anger coming from palestinian leaders saying this is trump moving towards israel. And one leader said its not the palestinians who will be most affected, it will be the israelis if the u. S. Cuts aid. Heres what he had to say. President trump is threatening to cut the aid. He can cut the aid. We have muslims, and the aid is benefiting the israelis. How so . Because its mainly funding security between the pal staoeupbz a according to the u. S. , its 216 million as of 2016, and that doesnt include 370 million that goes to the u. N. Agency in charge of helping palestinian refugees. And it would affect every aspect. John and poppy, perhaps no surprise, israels ministers held this decision and welcomed it, and they said the offerors dont get better but only worse. Continuing to follow this in jerusalem. Thank you very much. To iran now where seventh day of protests are under way. U. N. Ambassador, nikki haley, is calling for an emergency u. N. Meeting over all of this. And President Trump show new support for the protesters. You will see great support from the United States at the appropriate time. Our Nick Paton Walsh following these developments for us this morning. We heard the first assessment from the hard line Republican Guard as to how many people they say took to the streets in this past week against the government. They say actually there was never more than 15,000 people on the on the streets at one time, and they also say that one singular protest got larger than 1,500 people, and the guard used to depress some of the more violent disturbances. Today the pictures you are seeing are about the government is showing its voice is heard and reminding those inside iran they have adequate support to get them out, arouhani was just elected, and there are many that dont want to see change and that allows them to flood the streets in their own way as well, and a bit of a reality check here, continued unrest and instability is not suddenly overnight to find the moderate government replaced by even a more moderate government. The hardliners are still pointing at america as being behind this, and the tweets from trump adding to the claims that this is a u. S. Conspiracy to some debris, despite the fact that the information on the ground this is a ground swell of angry youth that are angry at food prices and today its about the pro government choice being heard, and it really isnt clear, nobody expected this and nobody wants to predict where we go in the days ahead. Nick, keep an eye on it for us. Thank you so much. The founders of the firm responsible for the trump and russia dossier want their congressional testimony released to the public. Why . In jellyfish. New this morning, the Research Firm responsible for the steele dossier, that report with allegations against President Trump and a number of allegations that have been backed up by the Intelligence Community and the ties to russia, that firm is fighting back. Its called fusion gps, and it calls republican allegations that they have conspiracy theories. President trumps lawyers had talks with the team of special counsel mueller just before christmas. Lets start with fusion gps. A hardhitting and aggressive opt ed from the research founders of fusion gps, and they were shocked by what the british spy steele uncovered when it kim to the kremlins effort to help elect donald trump, and part of the op ed saying as we told the Senate Judiciary committee in august, our sources said the dossier was taken so seriously because it corroborated reports the bureau received from other sources including one inside the trump camp. That one source in the camp could be george papadopoulos, the fact that he told an australian diplomat in london that could have been the impetus for the start of the probe, and he told the diplomat the russians told him he had dirt on Hillary Clinton, and of course the a and stopping the attacks on the dossier, and of course, john and poppy, the president has been a key part of the attacks, repeatedly calling this dossier bogus. What do we know about the meeting between the president s legal team and the special counsels office . We know it happened a few days before christmas, and they wanted to get a better sense of the Mueller Probe and how long the cloud of the investigation could hang over the president and the white house. We heard over the last few months, the president s legal Team Previously predicted it would be finished by the end of 2017, and obviously that date has come and gone. This meeting with muellers team did come at a key time, again, the end of december. At this time, all the white house interviews that were interested by mueller wrapped up, and that included interviews with communications director, and in addition the white house handed over all the requested documents. Its possible mueller could request here, and there have been no requests to interview the president or the Vice President. The lawyers for the white house meeting with mueller and trying to get more detail of when this thing could wrap because they are anxious for it to. Thank you for all the reporting. Also new this morning, really new this morning, the president s former chief strategist steve bannon tells wolf in a new book that trump tower meeting with russians was, quote, treasonous, and unpatriotic. A lot of people will be reading this book. Uhhuh. Steve bannon calls this meeting treasonous and unpatriotic, and even if you didnt think it was those two things you should have gone to the fbi immediately. This just shows theres major divisions in the trump camp, and steve bannon never liked the trump family, especially the two sons, and this is an indication of it. Its a significant statement when you think the architect of the Trump Campaign thinks when the Trump Campaign, not him, but others associated with it were told that the russian government was trying to help Hillary Clinton win the election, he thinks thats treasonous to collaborate with that. Thats significant. And we were just having a conversation about fusion gps, they said wait a minute, it was not the dossier that caused the investigation, but does this undercut the argument that we have heard from a lot of congressional supporters of the president , that this is a witch hunt and the dossier is a fake document. The dossier has become publicly a lot more important than it really is. Fbi investigations start for all sorts of reasons. They often start because an fbi agent reads something in the newspaper and thinks they should followup on it. There has to be an official start to an investigation has to come from a pure as snow driven source is not how the world really works. It now seems the whole line of attack that the steele dossier set off the investigation, even if thats a frivolous argument, its not true in the first place. It keeps getting undercut by multiple things, not to mention the key finding was corroborated by the Intelligence Community across the board. In this opinion piece, as we told the Senate Judiciary committee in august our dossier was taken so seriously because it corroborated reports that bureau received from other sources including one inside the trump camp. That last phrase, was there an fbi mole in the trump camp. Was somebody in the trump camp talking to the fbi during the campaign . Thats somewhat suggested. Its not clear that the fusion gps people would know that, and thats suggested by that and thats a tantalizing suggestion. One thing i just thought of between the gps stuff, and steve bannon, and he thinks the Financial IssuesMoney Laundering, he calls it. The kushner blank is greasy he calls it, and fusion gps said, we said to congress, you should investigate the bank. The only bank records that the House Intelligence Committee looked at were fusion gpss records. Their own personal records. It shows how the republicans in charge of the administration are more interested in attacking the critics of the president than examining the president s campaign. They call it chasing rabbits. Jeffrey, always great to have you here with us. Thank you so much. President trump taunt kim jongun over the size of his nuclear button, we are learning kims regime reopened talks with south korea for the first time in more than two years. Gentlemen, nice to have you. Colonel, let me begin with you. Help me understand what this administration gains, what americans gains and what the world gains from the president saying my button is better and bigger than yours if the administrations goal is deescalation, as stated . How does that get us there . Thats a good question. The president has tried to put kim jongun on notice, and i believe he has done that, and not exactly the bludgeon tool i would have khochosen, but he go the message across and were talking about it. There was much more in the series of announcements from the North Koreans and the president that are more important, but this is what everybody is fixated on. This is the problem. When the president does Something Like this, it takes us away from what we should be talking about and ignores whats really important. The communication is much more important, the talks between north korea and south korea much more important, but we are f fixated on what North Koreans dont even have yet. The new communications between the north and south koreans, all of this, are these positive developments . John, poppy, thanks for having me back again. Look, were always happy to see dialogue happening, but this is a movie we have seen again and again over the years. North korea and south korea have gone to the olympics together. They have marched under the same flag and a one korea banner. There has been conversations before, and the hotline was active, contrary to the president s tweets, its not the first time ever, and this is a problem that has be devilled administrations from both parties, we have not squeezed north korea to reduce its nuclear capacities. The president is pursuing a random strategy and its moving us away first from a solution. Former dni, James Clapper, colonel, said, nobody knows what kim jonguns ignition point is where one of these will set him off. Thats a very salient point, is it not . Thanks to my former boss for bringing that up. I dont think thats exactly the case. I think people assessed what the trigger point is, and hopefully somebody is telling the president please dont approach that. This is not helpful when you are trying to push somebody who is already paranoid. The North Koreans believe that Nuclear Capability is the only thing that guarantees the survival of that regime. If you threaten to take it away or attack it, they may say, we will be attacked by the United States and you push over that tipping point. This is very dangerous. When you are working intelligence you work with two things, capabilities and intentions. We have a fairly good handle on the capabilities, but the intentions are really the problem here. Hopefully somebody has a better handle on this than i think we do. I want to give you a chance to talk about the button issue once quickly. Well, john, its the opposite of what i learned when i was trained as a diplomat and what i taught other ambassadors in training later in my career, never make the situation worse. International relations are always a mess and what trump is doing with his impulsive and bizarre tweet, that tweet caused me to question his stability and fitness for office. Hes making the situation worse. First do no harm, and then can you try and come up with a comprehensive International Strategy with allies to put pressure on north korea. It was a very bad moment. Maybe the lowest single moment in his one year Foreign Policy tenure. On iran, before we let you go, colonel, to you, the white house would not answer the direct question yes about whether it wants to see a regime change, and heres what is a real deadline is january 12th when once again the president has to decide whether or not to waive the sanctions against iran, and if he doesnt he backs the u. S. Out of the nuclear deal, and do you think the current environment with the protesters and what nikki haley and the president has been saying about iran opens that door . This is not the same revolution we saw in 2009. This is really a leaderless spontaneous up rising of different groups and different reasons. As far as the nuclear issue, i think we will continue where we are. The president may not certify it again and it will be kicked back to congress, and i think the status quo will continue and iran remains a big consideration for this administration. Thank you so much for being with us, guys. Happy new year to you both. Happy new year. Half of those deaths happened in the midwest, which has seen bonechilling temperatures and is continuing to today. Windchills there dipping to 32 degrees below zero and its about to get worse. The cold front about the to meet up with a monster storm heading up the east coast. In the southeast, virginias governor issued a state of emergency for about 28 counties. Floridas panhandle could see ice and snow for the first time in years. And in the northeast, the storm will bring blizzard conditions with hurricaneforce winds. Our meteorologist, jennifer gray, in the Weather Center for a look. You know, some 100 Million People worried about this, jennifer. Exactly. And its just now starting to get its act together. And its doing it in the form of snow and even ice in places like north florida that arent used to this, at all. In fact, you have to go back to 1989 to find any measurable snowfall in tallahassee. And they did have some ice and snow today. In fact, portions of i10 has been shut down in both directions. Weve seen a lot of Car Accidents and a lot of bridges and roadways are closed across north florida and southern georgia. So definitely be careful out there. This is going to rapidly intensify, as it heads up the coast. Its what we call bombogenesis. Its when a storm lowers 24 millibars in 24 hours. And it is going to do that by tomorrow. Which means it will bring some gusty winds along the coast and heavy snowfall. Heres the radar right now. Across southern georgia, you can see the purple is ice and then some snowfall. Its basically going to turn all to snow by the time it gets into portions of south carolina, north carolina, and as we menti mentioned, we could see blizzardlike conditions especially along the coast, northern portions of new england, where we could see hurricaneforce winds, anywhere from 60 to 70 Miles Per Hour with gusts even higher. Its going to be a dangerous situation over the next call of days. 2 to 4 inches of snowfall expected across portions of the low country. Some isolated amounts, even more. And then i think for the northeast, its really going to be eastern massachusetts, rhode island, and then eastern portions of maine thats going to be hit the hardest with up to a foot of snowfall possible. So airports in boston and new york could see delays tomorrow. It is just going to be a mess. So heres the forecast. 1 to 2 inches in philly. 3 to 6 in new york. 9 to 12 in boston. And lets track it. As we go forward in time, and you can see the snowfall all the way up the coast, Hurricane Force winds possible, and then you can see all of that snowfall, just impacting the northeast. The other component to this, the very frigid temperatures, and as you guys know, a lot of times with these noreasters, we get power outages. So folks that do lose power in all of this will have to find a way to keep warm, because temperatures are going to drop even more. High temperatures in the Single Digits by the time we get to saturday. All right, jennifer gray, youre going to be busy working around the clock, i have no doubt. Thank you very much for that forecast. Bombogenesis. Thats what we they call it on the weather channel. This morning, the guardian reports on some pretty stunning remarks from the president s former chief strategist. According to a new book seen by the guardian, President Trumps former chief strategist, steve bannon, said this about the 2016 donald trump jr. Meeting in trump tower, where trump jr. Was promised dirt from the russians on Hillary Clinton. Steve bannon says, even if you thought that this was not treasonous or unpatriotic or bad blank, and i happen to think its all of that, you should have called the fbi immediately.
