The importer to the consumer so you wind up hitting us to punish them. When you think about it the president campaigned very heavily on this in terms of the Immigration Crisis and people have generally agreed this is an intractable problem but it really has reached a crisis point. You even have the New York Times saying we have a crisis at the southern border. Why wouldnt mexico is one of our Economic Partners they have some of the responsibility. Have some skin in the game. Why is it always that the United States is disproportionately affected with other people not doing their fair share . This is in sound keeping with the president s policy of being tough on immigration, Border Security, really securing it so we dont have these porous borders where people are coming over, there is human trafficking. There are drugs coming in. Crime. And having worked as a prosecutor for many years in San Francisco which was a sanctuary city and in los angeles i saw all too well the real problem of people coming in, criminal recidivists multiple times deported and coming back in like we saw with kate steinle in San Francisco. No question it is real. We both know if youre worried about criminality the place to start isnt with illegal entrants but there is no question there are criminals among them and repeat offenders. Its a hard problem. We still wind up in the same place. I get going after mexico. We both know they are the weaker partner. They dont have the capabilities the United States has. Last year one of the biggest roundups. Over a thousand people. Kids are going to be in bad trouble. Weve had six pass. Who knows what will happen . Absolutely. Young children like young girls 10 to 13 years of age automatically checked for rain or pregnancy because of whats happening. It is not okay to allow people to come over if they can be. Theyre under staffed, begging congress and the white house for help. Theyre not getting the help they want. Big problem. I dont get the solution. Because what happens now . You put the tariffs. Mexico says fine but i pay them, right . Because im the consumer. Now youve got the trade deal with mexico. What if they push back . What if it threatens the trade deal . Why is this the solution . Great point. Why are the democrats stonewalling and not allowing this to come to a vote . This is the problem were seeing. The president repeatedly over and over again says partner with me. Lets work on this problem. This crisis of immigration at the southern border. We can all agree there is a situation that needs to be addressed. The president has tried. And tried again. But now he needs to do something different. And this is very consistent with what he said he was going to do. Mexico, youre going to have to do your fair share. Were no longer going to have the american taxpayer who works very hard for their paycheck every day shoulder the burden of your gross, irresponsibility at the border allowing these people to come over. Why not go to the triangle and say let me help you people . Let me help you with the conditions making your people come to us . I think theyre economic claims. Let me help you. He said he wanted to pull aid. Wont that make it worse . I dont think so. It is a problem. You have the United States over and over doing the same thing which is the definition of insanity if you expect a different result. We keep rewarding people who arent working honestly as our partners in the United States, saying okay. This country has a problem. Theyre coming over. Theyre not doing anything, chris. It is only getting worse. To secure the border, prevent people coming in from south american countries. We dont give them much either. They are still getting help from us. I dont think it is unreasonable. The American People want the president to honor his promises about Border Security which relates directly to national security. He would not be doing his job if he didnt get tough with it. Lets see if they understand. Because this is not a man who says he is going to do something and not do it. He will fulfill this promise. Ifs going to be 5 and have an escalator if they dont take it seriously. I think hell get their attention just like he has with china. Tariffs work if you have patience at the plate. But it is a crisis he is imposing with the tariffs. As you said, time will tell and hell be measured in the election. The crisis is because of illegal immigration coming over. You put two things together. Tariffs work. He is imposing a similar idea and proposal with china. We havent seen a deal happen in china. Again, third time. Time will tell. He will be tested in the election. The impeachment situation. Let me ask something for the position of the campaign. Sure. Does the campaign accept the proposition that russia interfered in the 2016 election and we must stop them from doing it in 2020 . There was some indication there were facebook attempts, etcetera, to interfere with the election, right . But again, what did we find . Specifically that there was so much money spent, millions and millions of dollars, two years on an investigation that yielded no results. Despite the bias that was inherent. There was a result. Russian interference happened. It was pernicious, widespread. It has continued. When you say it was pernicious and widespread there has been no determination it had an impact whatsoever on the United States election. Should that type of thing be taken seriously if its happening and investigated . Sure. What do you mean if its happening . Do you think it happened . Im reading reports that say they think there were attempts with facebook, etcetera. Do i think it was widespread or pernicious . No i do not. Do i think it had an impact on the 2016 election . No. Do i think the democrats wish it did so they could have another excuse to say why President Trump is in the oval office . No obstruction, no collusion, and now theyre saying there is a coverup. I get the talking point. You know none of that is true. I do know that is true. There was no criminal conspiracy thank god. The president wasnt a traitor or a foreign agent. No proof of any of that. Thank god. But they wasted the taxpayers money. They owe the taxpayers an apology. They did things they knew they shouldnt have done and lied about it. Where was there any finding that there was any kind of insufficient evidence, no evidence whatsoever about collusion . Giving information to a guy with russian intel . Stupid move. Taking that meeting in trump tower . Stupid move. Where is the evidence of any obstruction and collusion whatsoever . That is collusion. It is not a crime. If Robert Mueller who over stepped his bounds by coming forward and making that statement had found any evidence, the prosecutors job as you know i am a former prosecutor, is to determine if there is sufficient evidence that a crime has been committed and that that individual is guilty of that crime. Prosecutor or not thats his job. He found no evidence to support that. In fact, he he found a lot of evidence to support it but said he couldnt prosecute it. William barr went a step further and released the whole report. There has been transparency. Theyve put up with witch hunts and investigation here. They know the strong economy, as you know, you come from a family of politics. Strong economy incumbents get reelected. They dont want to see the president remain in the oval office. Who is they . The democrats and many people in the main stream media. Mueller is not a democrat. I dont know what he registered as but i do know what he did. Sessions wasnt a democrat. I do know what he did in overstepping his bounds. Let me tell you something. In the Kenneth Starr report and he did the investigation on bill clinton 11 times he used the word guilty right . Did you ever Robert Mueller ever use those words . Whatsoever . No. How was he going to get him on obstruction when he has guidance not to indict a sitting president and, two, when the guy at the center of it wouldnt give him answers. The subpoenas, the fbi agents, this was an investigation that went on and on. They wanted a predetermined outcome. They didnt get it. He didnt give them anything on obstruction. Because he didnt commit obstruction. He cant be part of an antitrump situation. He is a life long republican. I dont know if he is part of an antitrump situation or not but i know as a prosecutor he over stepped his bounds to try to appease the democrats who were upset because they were hoping he was going to be santa claus for them to put the president out of office. Hes an independent broker. He always has been. In fact he over stepped his bounds and made those statements. I think he did it in your favor because he is supposed to say prosecutor declined but he cant because his hands are tied so he wants to explain and he says, i cant do this. Im not even going to say if i found criminal activity because i dont want to be unfair to the president because he wont have his day in court. But i cant say he didnt do anything wrong. I cant exonerate him. I thought he bent over backward to be fair. William barr said specifically mueller could have reached a conclusion and not violated dod policy, quote, to make charges or indict a sitting president. If he had the evidence to support it, he would have read it in the report. It wasnt there. He does. He has five different counts of obstruction that have significant nothing against the president. There is no finding or conclusion that the president obstructed justice. He said he couldnt and he left to congress. Now well see what they do with it. Additionally as william barr said the doj, the investigations they do, do not serve as an adjunct to congress. They just want a different outcome so now theyre going to continue to do this. Who is they . The democrats and the cast of characters running trying to unseat President Trump. This is what theyre raising money on, impeachment, impeachment. So are you. Im not raising money on it. The campaign put something out saying they want to impeach the president. Give us money. The people that support the president of the United States believe in him and theyve seen that in fact despite this president being completely cooperative he didnt sit for an interview. He didnt answer a single question on obstruction. The president was totally transparent and cooperative with this investigation. Except he didnt sit for aint view or answer a single question about obstruction. There is no evidence of it. I know. He didnt talk to them. There is no evidence of the obstruction. There is a lot of evidence of it. They didnt get any directly from him. Now they say he engaged in a coverup . Of what . Innocence . Come on. It is absolutely ridiculous. His efforts to control during that proceeding was what they were looking at. Now itll come to congress and i make you this promise. This must end. It has to. Well, it should be ended already. Weve already got the report and the conclusion. Mr. Mueller said well figure out what congress is going to do. Other issues will come up now. The border, the economy, trade. The campaign has a place on this show. You are welcome to come on and argue the positions of the campaign whenever you want. It is our position that in fact they dont want to focus on the results and the economic boom, record low unemployment across the board so they want to talk about crimes that never happened and now they want to pivot to coverup. Thats why the written answers were found to be inadequate by the mueller team. Some campaign folks deleted relevant communications. Not helpful. Others were convicted of lying to investigators. Not helpful. Even when this president then stumbled today in a tweet in what appeared to be an admission of the basic threat that russia attacked our election and did so to help him, he then had to backpedal to this. Russia didnt help me at all. Russia if anything i think helped the other side. We know russia not only tried to help the Trump Campaign and only the Trump Campaign but the Trump Campaign expected to benefit from its interference. Even the Republicanled SenateIntel Committee found, quote, there was no pro clinton content on facebook or instagram as part of the russian influence campaign. When potus claims mueller didnt find obstruction either, lets call it what it is. Thats a lie. Mueller repeatedly pointed to substantial evidence that this president tried to obstruct justice. This is why mr. Mueller said this. If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime we would have said so. And they didnt say so. So now, congress has to figure out what to say about it all. You must decide what matters to you and how much but lets start with the facts. I mean, most of the people coming across the border as you know are folks coming from guatemala, honduras, el salvador. And theyre traveling through mexico. And mexico is giving them, you please be, the ability to cross that southern border of mexico, allowing them to go through their country, and then piling up on our border. Its clearly their fault. And they can do something about it. Give the president credit. Hes tried. Hes negotiated recently with guatemala and is working with those countries to try to stem the tide but i think the frustration the president has shown is reasonable and the mexicans need to respond. I think the president has put the hammer down. Okay. So, karen, fair point about mexicos fix on the problem. I would push back on the idea that the president has worked with guatemala. He threatened to pull funds from them. But he has had the dhs acting secretary go down there and did have the dhs secretary before go, pompeo has tried. They were trying to do some help whether the president was aiding those efforts or not. But what is your problem with the tariffs . Well, for starters, well there are two things. Number one, what you are saying to mexico is if someone is coming from latin america and they say to you at the border in mexico i am coming to apply for Refugee Status in the United States of america, are we really asking mexico to engage in our Foreign Policy to make determinations about who should or shouldnt be here . Should have the ability to apply for Refugee Status . I dont think just blaming mexico i think that is overly simplistic. Secondly, i think the tariffs, the president has been, in trying to tout this economy, right, he is trying to tout this trade deal that hes gotten with mexico and canada, and i think these tariffs will absolutely damage his ability to claim a success in that area. And then, third, the thing i would say is that as with the tariffs were already seeing in place it is going to hurt american businesses. There are always these unintended consequences. So i think we need to be concerned about all three of those. All right. Im not crazy about the first one because mexico is a sovereign nation and when people come to their border and say they want to go somewhere it doesnt matter where. International law says they should claim asylum there. So they have the ability to speak. On the second and third points, rick, i dont want to pay any more for stuff. I got two teenagers. I got, you know, a family that buys stuff. Tariffs hit you and me. They dont hurt that country. Mexico sells us a lot of stuff that we want and need. You worried about this messing with the economy . Well, on the first part i would agree. If someone from mexico shows up at the border and says we want to go to canada we dont say come on in. Thats just not what a country does. That is illegitimate. On the point, look, there is a legitimate argument for people to say we shouldnt be using tariffs as a tool to try to get our way in trade or in this case with respect to immigration. But i will tell you this. That we have for the first time seen the chinese really come seriously to the table and seen the president be very tough on them and, you know, on an issue that is vitalie importaly impor is them stealing our technology and the worlds technology. Im with you about china but he is not banging them on the i. T. Stuff yet and the tariffs, were putting billions into our farmers to back fill the cost. It is the principal reason the administration has not gone forward with a deal is the chinese have backed away from doing what the world not just the United States is trying to do. That is the point. Now we have tariffs hurting the farmers. They are hurting some of our people that is true. But it is hurting china far, far worse than the United States and china is not in as good an economic shape as the United States is. The penalties are harder on the chinese and the longterm benefits to farmers and everyone else by keeping our technological advantage and keeping china, making china live by the laws that the rest of the world has to with respect to intellectual property, it is well worth the shortterm fame. The farmers who are hurting understand that. Lets end on this. Karen, what would make a better fix at the border . Well, i think actually we need to go back to a policy we had that was starting to work which is a program of aid to those countries. I heard you talking about it earlier in this hour. That is as a way to try to help the conditions in those countries so that people arent actually coming here. Look, rick, what is the plus minus . The plus minus is it feels strong. Im going to punish you if you dont do what i want. What if we all learned as parents in my case a constantly failing parent, which is when you catch them doing something right, you reward the good behavior, behavior changes faster than when you take punitive measures. Arent you concerned well see that with mexico . Theyll knuckle up. They got a new administration there not predisposed to being friendly to this president. Is he giving them something to get into a fight we dont need to have . This isnt the first time the president has talked to mexico about dealing with this problem and as we see as the crisis at the border continues to escalate, theyre not doing anything about it and at some point youve got to bring the hammer down and i think that is what the president has decided to do. Lets start with the polls. Beto orourke, thank you for joining us on primetime. Thanks for having me on. Lets look at the polls from your perspective. When you look at the men and women above you what are they doing that youre not . I dont know. You know, our fortunes will rise and fall in the months to come before the first caucus in iowa and the first primary in new hampshire. You had a poll a couple weeks ago that had me beating trump by a greater margin than any other democratic contender. Who knows what that means this far out . What i have been doing, showing up in these different states in the different communities within them and not writing anybody off based on how big or small their town is, not taking anyone for granted based on Party Affiliation but just listening and learning and incorporating what i hear into this campaign feels right to me. Politics and policy. In terms of what we saw as an impact from mr. Mueller yesterday there is more Energy Around certain democrats saying, now is the time. We know what we need to know. Its time to start impeachment inquiry, proceedings, whatever your choice is. Youre one of those people. My question to you, why the rush down impeachment when it comes with Political Risk . There is no rush. This has been a very sober, deliberate process. More than 300 pages in the mueller report. And the only Public Comments from the principal investigator, the special counsel Robert Mueller yesterday, he talked about the fact that he could not clear the president from any implication he had committed a crime, said the criminal Justice System is not the appropriate venue in which to try this but that there are alternatives under the constitution. Nancy pelosi says this in terms of the calls for what youre saying, impeach right now. Here is her response. We wont be swayed by a few people who think one way or another who are running for president as much as i respect all of them. And they have the freedom to be for impeachment. We have the responsibility to get a result for the American People. A result for the American People. Thats what im talking about in terms of Political Risk. I think twothirds of your party, 67 or so who say we want impeachment mean removal. And i dont think theyre going to be able to get that to those people. So result. What does result mean to you . Yeah, results means that we have the facts and the truth and real accountability and justice for what happened to our country. We were attacked by a foreign power in 2016, an attack invited by the candidate who is now our president. An investigation into that attack was obstructed by this president. Unfortunately, the house of representatives today has stalled in their pursuit of these facts and the truth. Only impeachment gives them the leverage and the mechanism necessary for us to know exactly what has happened and who is responsible for that. I understand it is politically difficult and challenging and i have all the respect in the world for speaker pelosi. I know she will get to the right decision on this. But our country is depending on it. Thats why i bring this urgency to this issue. All right. Speaking of urgent issues lets talk about immigration. Looking at your plan the beto orourke immigration plan pathway to citizenship, reuniting separated families, rescinding travel bance, stopping work on the border wall, boosting staffing to expand inspections, investing 5 billion in the northern triangle. Let me ask you why do you need to stop work on the border wall . You know that the acting head of the dhs who ran cbp has been in it for a long time, and he and others on the border say we need it. We need the physical border. It is not immoral and helps us funnel places to the right places of entry and keeps people safer. Why stop the work . What keven mathey are doing creating chaos on the border. He has presided over an agency that has seen the deaths of six children in the last year that were within their custody. More than 600 miles of walls we already have have produced the deaths of thousands of migrants just attempting to join their families or find work or flee persecution in some of the deadliest countries on the face of the planet today. I dont know. I dont have any information that the men and women watching these kids are responsible for their deaths. What i have seen come out in the reporting and the action reports is that they are overwhelmed with need. Mcaleenan, nielsen before him, they were begging people in congress when you were there, begging for help. They didnt get it. They got half the money this he asked for. Yes, it was 480 million. Yes, they spent it. Yes, they have to be accountable. But theyre overwhelmed. And one of the things that comes up is capacity. And i see boosting staffing, expand inspections. They dont have the capacity, beto. They need help. The democrats arent giving it. The republicans arent giving it. The president isnt giving it. In fact, i remember when you stood outside that facility and said, hey, you got to close this, but now they dont have the beds. They dont have anywhere to put the kids. What do you do about that . Yeah. So first of all, im grateful to you for reporting from the border and seeing this with your own eyes. And one of the things we know from living on the border is these families do not belong in detention. They pose no risk to this country. In fact, if we implement something we call for in our plan, the family Case Management program, for a fraction of the cost, and at no risk to our communities, we can guarantee these families show up to their court dates, meet their appointments with i. C. E. Officials, and follow our laws. Here is my question to you. Maybe you have better insight on this. I see such opportunity for everybody in whats happening on the border right now. The president has his emergency declaration. Hes not dipping into those pockets to help with the emergency need. He says the democrats wont give me the rule changes. This is about emergency help for this capacity and flow, beto. They need help now to process. You cant just let people into the country. Well, dhs is using a program of actually rejecting these Asylum Seekers at the ports of entry forcing them to try to cross in between the ports of entry where they then arrest them, put them in cages in some cases. This month and next month will be the worst flow they have to deal with and i dont get why nobody is speeding them money to help get them accommodations and medical care, just medical care.
