Update from the National Hurricane scenter, we have watches issued bahamas. Hurricane watch means conditions hurricane conditions are likely within the next 48 hours. Notice that nothing has been issued for the southeastern portions of florida just yet. Of course, that will occur once the storm gets a little bit closer in proximity. 105mileperhour sustained winds near the center of circulation. Not much change it with the 5 00 a. M. Update in terms of speed of the storm, at least the wind speed. What we have seen is some consistencies in the models that have shown a southerly shift in the track, which is putting the southern peninsula of florida in play here. A Large Population density. Weve also noticed a slowing of the forward progression of the storm as it approaches the coastline late monday and into the early tuesday timeframe. Weve had an amazing agreement on the models that we look at. This is also new on the overnight period. From the american to the european model, showing the landfall into southern portions of florida x aga, benagain, eary morning with the pronounced winds. Back in 2004, we had two major hurricanes, francis and jean being weeks of each other, going through vero beach. Our Community Cake takes this seriously and we are going to be ready and going to be safe. Weve been boarding up, stocking up on supplies at publix and other groceries. People have filled up their gas tanks. Theyre prepared. Checking their generators, making sure they have extension cords so theyre not too close to the house. Theyre getting their medications. Our governor of the state of florida yesterday declared a the state of emergency. Our local city of vero beach, 12 01 a. M. This morning, declared our local state of emergency. Our Emergency Operation centers are going. Were doing everything to be as prepared as possible for this hurricane. I just want to thank, you know, all the people who are involved and our local responders are great. Beaches will be closing at 5 00 p. M. Today because the surf is going to go up. The schools locally are theyre open today, but theyre going to be, tomorrow, setting up as emergency shelters. Early sunday morning, i believe theyre going to start moving people in. The local Nursing Homes are making plans because of the issues they had in the past with the deaths in south florida. Im aware the local Nursing Homes are actually going and making their arrangements to have airconditioning on emergency supplies after the hurricane. Yup. I think it is a matter of taking it seriously. Clearly, vero beach, your city, is taking it seriously, as you go through the list of preparations being made. Weve heard from some vero beach residents, and theyve told cnn that, you know, their anxiety levels are quite high. Theyre worried about a direct hit. Regarding flooding though, because the latest advisory just came out about 38 minutes ago, and the rainfall projections have increased to 6 to 12 inches in some areas. 15 plus inches in the worst areas. Thats a lot of rain being dumped, possibly, in parts of florida. How concerned are you about that and flooding . Im very concerned. Actually, most concerned about storm surge. What happens, yesterday at our 5 30 update from the National Weather service, they were talking about up to 10 feet of storm surge in the maximum areas. Were also at a time of the month where were having our highest tides. Really, it matters a lot on the timing. If you get a 4 foot high tide, plus a 10 foot storm surge, it is a disaster. It also matters when the tides come through. Most people who die in the hurricanes are dying related to storm surge. Thats my number one concern. We had someone weve had people die in florida in the past related to generator use. People dont understand this. You have to keep the generator. You cannot put it in the garage, not even close to your house. One of the errors people make, they dont get a long enough extension cord, so it ends up being close to their house, or theyre worried someone will steal the generator at night. It is not worth your life. Keep it outside. If you need a chain and a lock, lock it up. Those things worry me. Because there is a state of emergency, patients can get their refills early. The Insurance Companies are required to refill early, even though nay nothey may not norma. They have to because of the governor. Take it seriously. When the mandatory evacuations come out, people need to listen and do what is recommended for their own safety. Thats what i wanted to ask you about quickly. You talked about your experience with the storms. People essentially are saying, hey, weve been through this before. Were fine. Were all set. Can that experience work against you when you are telling people, all right, this is for real, you need to get out . Yeah. Im worried about that. We had a near miss with matthew. Came within very, very close. That would have been a devastating hurricane. When it passed, we lucked out and it didnt hit us, people assumed, well, this is not something to worry about. I would say, that is totally wrong. Youve got to listen. Just assume the worst. Be prepared. Its the old boy scout thing. I also want to say, our city recently sold our government electric to fpnl, 30 lower rates. We have a huge company, fpnl, if people dont know, is basically it covers the entire east coast of florida. The entire state of florida, all 67 counties, under a state of emergency this morning, as Hurricane Dorian heads toward that state. Now, this could be the largest, strongest storm to hit the east coast of florida in nearly three decades, and a shift overnight has it potentially headed to the major population centers. The storm got stronger. It is now a category 2 hurricane. By the time it makes landfall on monday, it is on track to be a category 4. A catastrophic the storm is forecast to pack winds up to 130 miles per hour. Now, exactly where dorian will come ashore is still unclear. Look at this map. It could be anywhere from the florida keys to southern georgia. Thats a stretch of about 500 miles. So flooding and storm surge are Major Concerns with this hurricane. As much as a foot of rain could fall in the hardest hit areas and the storm is still forecast to slow down significantly and stall over the state after making landfall.
