Guy is winning in florida, he is winning in North Carolina, he is winning in iowa, he is winning in ohio. All right. When we win, all right, we are going to washington, d. C. , and we are going to drain the swamp. All right. Im brooke baldwin. Thank you for being with me. Were live in florida tomorrow. Meantime, the lead starts now. Thanks so much, brooke. The road to 270 shows an open lane for Hillary Clinton, but watch out for those potholes. The lead starts right now. Breaking news, a brandnew cnn electoral map reflecting gains for Hillary Clinton and donald trump in the polls. Could this be closer than some in clinton camp want to believe . More hacked emails raising serious questions about money, power, influence, pressure and team clinton. Is this a look behind the curtain at how the white house could operate . Plus, a showdown happening right now between police and protesters after mark ruffalo live on the lead as hollywood steps in to block a pipeline from cutting through the heartland. Welcome to the lead. I am pamela brown. 12 days until the election. 12 days fraught with danger and possibility for both president ial campaigns. The latest cnn poll of polls, the average of the last five National Polls meeting cnns standards show Hillary Clinton besting donald trump by six points as you see right here. Clinton 47, trump 41. Gary johnson 5, jill stein, 2. As we know, this is not a national election. Its state by state. Cnn chief National Correspondent john king is standing by the take a look map. John, cnn revising its electoral map showing donald trump putting two states back in play, right . Yes, pam. Good news for donald trump. Looks can be deceiving. Weve changed the electoral map. Hillary clinton now has 272. Donald trump 179. Changes from yesterday. Yesterday, florida leaning democratic, nevada leaning democrat. Because of new polling theyre back in the tossup category. If youre in camp trump you think this looks better. Brandnew state polls out this afternoon. Starting in iowa, a state donald trump is counting on. Boom new quinnipiac poll showing a dead heat in iowa and Hillary Clinton tied here at 4444 doing well in early voting. Iowa back in play. Moving to georgia, one of the reddest states in the United States. Look at this. Quinnipiac poll showing donald trump up one. Statistically thats a tie. 4443. Quinnipiac saying in its polling those who say they voted early favoring significant. Moving up the coast to virginia. Early on donald trump wanted this state. This is the latest poll to show a doubledigit clinton lead. By all accounts here, game over in virginia. A 12point lead for significant. Pam, where is donald trump today . He is in ohio, mustwin. Hillary clinton in North Carolina where donald trump was yesterday. Yet another poll showing a narrow lead for Hillary Clinton. This has been consistent, a narrow, stubborn lead in North Carolina. 4743. If you flip back the other map and look at this again, you take those into account, back to the electoral map. You could make the argument that maybe iowa should be a tossup state and we should take that away. Ill take this off. If we bring iowa back to a tossup state and georgia back to a tossup state, donald trump would go down to 157. What would he have to do now, pam . One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight states, including some traditionally reliably red states, even if donald trump went 8 for 8 and won them all, which most people will tell you is pretty unlikely it would not be enough. He would still be short. Putting nevada and florida back in play shows a little bit of slip for significant, but state by state, especially with the new data, the map is still tilted overwhelmingly in her favor. John king, thank you so much. On the heels of that, an eyeopening new report out today from inside Trumps CampaignData Nerve Center shows Trumps Campaign knows its losing despite the candidates public suggestions otherwise. The Bloomberg Businessweek report says part of the trump land is to try to discourage turnout among africanamericans, young women. Sunlen, has the Trump Campaign responded to this report . Reporter they havent yet responded, pam, specifically to that report but trump advisors openly admit that this is going to be an uphill climb for them in the fight ahead. That said, they are looking in those battleground state state polls, the new polls that have shown a tightening race and they say they believe now this race is less of an uphill climb than it was at this point last week. That effort for the Trump Campaign starts right here in ohio, a state that is a mustwin for donald trump. Donald trump blanketing the battleground state of ohio today. In 12 days were going to win ohio, and we are going to win back the white house. The state and its 18 electoral votes critical to trumps path to the white house. Hillary clinton wants to doubledown on obamacare and make it even worse. Reporter with less than two weeks left in the campaign, trump is staying on the attack against clinton and seizing on the steady drip of hacked emails from Clintons Campaign chairman coming from wikileaks. If the clintons were willing to play this fast and loose with their enterprise when they werent in the white house, just imagine what theyll do given the chance to once again control the oval office. Reporter even as he backs off his recent threat to sue the women who have accused him of Sexual Misconduct all of these liars will be sued after the election is over. Reporter no longer saying hell go through with it. Well find out. Reporter trump revealing today his campaign is planning to deploy his wife melania for a series of closing speeches. She has agreed to do two or three speeches, and i think its going to be big speeches, important speeches. Reporter melania has been largely absent from the campaign trail since her Convention Speech in july. But the Trump Campaign is leaning on her voice now to help improve her husbands standing with women. I support him 100 , and i am there for him every time he needs me, and i am going to join him. Reporter meantime, trump reclaiming some support in the new tossup state of utah, from congressman jason chafits. He withdrew his support after the comments about women were made public. I am out. I can no longer endorse donald trump for president. We have a 15yearold daughter. You think i can look her in the eye and tell her that i endorse donald trump for president when he acts like this . And his apology . Reporter now, after nearly a dozen women have come forward to accuse trump of Sexual Assault or harassment, chaffetz is saying, i will not defend nor endorse donald trump but i am voting for him. Hrc is that bad. Some republicans are considering the prospects of a clinton administration. Chaffetz, chair of the House Oversight committee promising years of congressional investigations telling the washington post, quote, even before we get to day one, weve got two years worth of material already lined up. And senator ted cruz warning republicans might not vote on the nomination for the Supreme Court seat vacated by the death of justice scalia. Cruz saying there is precedent for leaving the ninth seat vacant. In the interview where donald trump revealed that his wife would be hitting the campaign trail, giving two or three big speeches between now and the end, his wife almost seemed a little bit caught off guard by that announcement. She seemed a bit surprised that she would be potentially doing that. The Trump Campaign has not given specifics over where or when the speeches would be. Thank you for that. Switching to the democrats now. The latest from wikileaks suggests that, as Chelsea Clinton took on more responsibilities at the Clinton Foundation, she became alarmed at the, quote, hustling that she saw going on. The trove of stolen emails show a number of folks around both bill and hillary concerned about what was going on around them, ranging from Hillary Clintons use of a private email server to the millions of International Dollars flowing into the Clinton Foundation. In one hacked email a top bill clinton staffer discusses what he calls, quote, bill clinton inc. , securing not just donations to the foundation but inkind services for the president and his family for personal travel, hospitality, vacation and the like. Cnns senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is covering clinton in winstonsalem, North Carolina. Reading through the emails you get the sense that there was this quote, unquote, old guard protecting the clintons and then the newer staffers and chelsea who come in and say, no, this isnt right. Reporter you certainly do. You get the sense of dysfunction, disagreement and even disgust between the old guard and the new guard. But clinton world writ large is trying to ignore all of these emails. Theyre trying to look forward to the future some 12 days or so away before election day. To do that today, they brought out the biggest democratic weapon of all, Michelle Obama. Michelle obama is making the case again for Hillary Clinton. But tonight she is making it with her. She is absolutely ready to be commander in chief on day one. And yes, she happens to be a woman. Reporter for the first time, the first lady and a former one on stage together. Rallying democrats in North Carolina. Seriously, is there anyone more inspiring than Michelle Obama . Reporter a first lady tagteam, going hard after donald trump in a race divided by deep gender lines. We want a president who values and honors women. Who teaches our daughters and our sons that women are full and kwo equal human beings worthy, deserving of love and respect. Reporter the Clinton Campaign calls her their not so secret weapon, a tiring cliche but a true one that bluntly acknowledges significant needs mrs. Obama. No one knows more about whats at stake in this election than our first lady. Reporter 16 years ago in the closing months of mrs. Clintons time as first lady she was running for senate in new york. Mrs. Obama has no interest in being on the ballot now or ever, friends say. A comment she made in the 2008 campaign is now being revisited as a swipe at clinton. If you cant run your own house, you certainly cant run the white house. Reporter just last week trump raising it in North Carolina. Wasnt she the run that originally started the statement, if you cant take care of your home, right . Reporter aides to obama say she was not talking about clinton who they say she respects and has grown fond of. Hillary clinton is my friend. Reporter now clinton is hoping the popularity of both obamas rubs off. The president s Approval Rating at 59 in a new cnn orc poll and 54 believe things in the country are going well. The clintons new balancing act projecting confidence. The cnn poll of polls showing clinton with a sixpoint edge over trump. Tonight the campaign bracing for even more hacked emails. After the New York Times first reported clintons private email server in march 2015, Campaign Chairman john podesta sounded the alarm within hours. Did you have any idea of the depth of this story, he wrote to robby mook, the campaign manager. He replayiereplied, nope. We were told everything was taken care of. Since then clinton and her campaign have tried to downplay it yet clinton confidants no it was a problem. Do we actually know who told hillary she could use a private email . Has that person been drawn and quartered . Now, these wikileak release have rocked the campaign, dividing the campaign in some respects, but one aide told me its taken the joy out of this race in the final days here. Another Senior Advisor said they were lucky that they were not released earlier before millions of people are voting but the reality, they believe, is that voters simply are tuning them out, theyve made up their mind about this election here. Well find out about that, but the campaign wanted Michelle Obama here, one of the biggest democratic weapons of all, to give her seal of approval, pamela. She said Hillary Clinton is my friend. All right. Jeff zeleny, thank you so much for that. Donald trump, by the way, says he could teach military generals a thing or two. Trumps senior communication advisor weighs in on that remark, up next. Okay, so whats our latest data say . Our customer is a 21yearold female. Heavily into basketball. Wait. Data just changed. Now shes into disc sports. Ah, no shes not. Since when . Since now. Shes into tai chi. She found disc sports too stressful. Hold on. Let me ask you this. Whats she gonna like six months from now . This gap between when we should start saving and when we actually do is one of the reasons why too many of us arent prepared for retirement. Just start as early as you can. Its going to pay off in the future. If we all start saving a little more today, well all be better prepared tomorrow. Prudential. Bring your challenges. Welcome back to the lead. Im jake tapper. Thanks to pamela brown for pinchhitting for a few minutes. We had a couple technical problems. Donald trump has been making some incendiary charges about the iraq u. S. Effort to reclaim mosul. On twitter mr. Trump called the effort a disaster and suggested the campaign is being waged to help Hillary Clinton in the election. He elaborated on his thoughts on the Mosul Campaign in a brandnew interview in which it was pointed out to him that the pentagon says the Mosul Campaign is making progress and that the former dean of the Army War College said mr. Trumps comments, quote, show he doesnt know a damn thing about military strategy. Here is mr. Trumps response. The resistance is much greater now because they knew about the attack. Why cant they win first and talk later . Why do they say three months before the attack were going in. So you can tell your military expert that ill sit down and ill teach him a couple of things. Joining me now Senior Communications advisor for the Trump Campaign, jason miller. Thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Jake, thank you. Jake. Retired u. S. Army colonel, a west point graduate. He commanded an Artillery Battalion during the gulf war, went on to serve as the dean of u. S. Army war college and as the director for defense policy and arms control for the White House National security council. What kind of military training or expertise does mr. Trump have where he feels he has standing to teach that brave veteran anything about military strategy . Well, jake, i think your introduction package really set it up for exactly what mr. Trump believes, which is we should not be going in and telegraphing exactly what were going to be doing with military actions, whether thats one month or two months or three months ahead of schedule, saying here is exactly what our plan is and what were going to do. Obviously youre going to discuss broader strategic objectives and tactics, but to go and say here is exactly when were going to go in and here are the fine details, i think is a fundamentally different world view. One of the examples that mr. Trump frequently brings up on the campaign trail is, could you imagine patton or mcarthur saying, here is exactly where we are going to go at the exact time. He has just a fundamentally different world view than that. Well, military experts say that you cant really compare this to world war ii and that the reason that the Mosul Campaign was telegraphed to an extent was multifold, one to get isis leaders to try to flea. Two, to there are more than a million civilians in mosul, to telegraph to them to take measures to protect themselves. Moreover, as i am sure you know, mosul was a monthslong effort to train the iraqis, get them up to speed and the iraqis were and are in charge of this campaign. So there are a number of reasons for it. Jason . Im sorry. Jake, you cut out there. There is there are a number of reasons for it. There are a number of reasons to talk about the campaign, and thats what military experts say [ audio difficulties ] i dont know what mr. Trump is talking about when he says he is a he can sit down and lecture a military expert. Well, jake, you are cutting in and out during your last question there. And so ill answer it to the best of what i understand, which is mr. Trump and what his world view is. I think thats been laid out very clearly, that we shouldnt be going in and telegraphing exactly what were going to do and the exact time. I think, if you take a step back for a moment, the bigger issue here is who best can defeat isis and prosecute the case against radical islamic terrorism. When you look at Hillary Clintons failed leadership in the middle east, the way iraq has disintegrated, the fact that we have a nuclear iran, look at libya, syria. These are disasters across the board. So when the American Voters look at someone like Hillary Clinton, we dont think that she is the right person to go and defeat radical islamic terrorism. I am sorry if were having technical issues. Thats our fault. Jason, another issue. On monday mr. Trump was decrying Voter Suppression and accusing the Clinton Campaign of orchestrating ways to keep voters from turning out. Take a listen. John podesta rigged the polls by oversampling. He said do this by oversampling democrats, a voter i mean, you see this, you see it all. A Voter Suppression technique. Now, as you know, according to a brandnew Bloomberg Businessweek report, a senior official on the Trump Campaign claimed, quote, we have three major Voter Suppression operations under way. Isnt mr. Trump and your campaign doing exactly what he is decrying on the campaign trail . Jake, not at all. First of all, who every gave that quote was not qualified to give it or had no idea what they are talking about. Here is the deal with mr. Trump. He is running to be a president for all americans. We saw just this week he had his plan for an american urban renewal. He is running he is going into communities that Hillary Clinton and the democrats have left behind for far too long. So, when i hear some of these descriptions, i have no idea what theyre talking about. Obviously were going to drive our message. Mr. Trump has made it clear that he wants to represent all americans and thats our attitude here. Things in the Bloomberg Business week report. This is a report from inside your data center, is that the man who runs the data shop told reporters your internal polls mirror the public polls, the polls that mr. Trump and you and the rest of mr. Trumps surrogates say are rigged. But mr. Parskale said they are not according to your own data. When you and the campaign dismiss the polls as rigged, thats not true according to your own data. You know that the polls are accurate according to this article. Well, i havent had the chance to follow up on the article, so i am not sure when this was given or what specific polls he may be referring to. The tracking numbers i am seeing show a very positive movement for mr. Trump as were coming down the home stretch here. Look in florida where we have both independent and internal numbers are looking very good. Look to North Carolina, where we are ahead of the pace of where mitt romney was four years ago for early voting and absentees. Iowa, were far ahead of the pace and democrats have trailed off. Earlier to when john king was showing us the map were five Percentage Points better for early voting and absentees and nevada than mitt romney was four years ago. We see a very optimistic picture. Mr. Trump is in ohio today with several stops, tomorrow he will be in New Hampshire and then maine. Were heading out west and will be in colorado and arizona. So we see the clear path. Were energetic and optimistic and feel like things are really coming together, especially with the news of the Clinton Foundation today and the emails. Jak jake, the 66 million for clinton, inc. , is nothing more than its corruption. No other way to look at it than just pure corruption and selling an office for personal gain. There are real contrasts in this race, and we feel mr. Trump is hitting his stride at the right time. Jason miller from the Trump Campaign. Thank you so much. We just missed the National Anthem there. Lets talk to our political panel. Cnn political director David Chalian and chief political analyst gloria borger. David, you have been reading these wikileaks along with the rest of us. What strikes you about them . It seems to me that there are two different spheres in the clinton world, and if she, in fact if these polls are proven correct, this is going to be a big theme in her white house. There is no doubt about it, jake. Remember at the beginning of the Clinton Campaign, one of the big conversations was is she going to bring in a new guard to help her run this campaign or bring back the same insular world around her throughout her white house years into the senate and into her 2008 president ial campaign. She did break with a lot of those folks and put other people in charge that had been sort of from Barack Obamas universe, i look at the emails and say, this is exactly one of these narratives that has formed around her, the culture of being a clinton. And it does not play well for them because, at every turn, you read more information where it looks like, today with bill clinton and doug band, it looks like just trying to leverage their positions, whether at the foundation or their position in society, for their own personal gain and that theyre not sort of playing by the same rules as everyone else. I just think that is an impression that had been formed long ago, one they really want to break free from and one that, if she does win the white house, i do think will be front and center for some time if she can show a different clinton culture. Gloria, its not tough to figure out which individuals are enabling some of the behaviors that get the clintons in trouble. Yeah. And which individuals are trying to fend it off. Right. I think it says something about the clintons themselves, because, over 30 years in politics, you have a group of people that travel with you throughout. And then, as we see in the campaign, you have a new group of people thats been brought in. And there is a conflict. Neera tandens emails to john podesta asked really legitimate questions, such as why didnt they get this email stuff i am paraphrasing out 18 months ago. And her her answer was, because they were trying to get away with it. So what were going to see, if should there be a clinton administration, is a struggle for the heart and mind of Hillary Clinton. And she is going to have to choose, as she did to a great degree during the campaign when she put john podesta in charge, who has a longtime relationship with Hillary Clinton but and with bill clinton, but theyre going to have to make a decision about whether its its the old gang or its the new people that come in and can set her on the sort of straight and narrow here. I think that this is when i read these emails, it was kind of, for me i dont know about you, jake it was sort of deaa vu all over again back from the 90s. Yeah. I mean, i just hope, assuming she wins nobody should assume anything these days but should she win, i hope she chooses wisely regarding the group of individuals she surrounds herself with. On the other side of the aisle, david, Jason Chaffetz reversed himself on his support for trump. Listen to what he had to say to don lemon right after the access Hollywood Tape broke three weeks ago. My wife, julie, and i, we have got a 15yearold daughter. You think i can look her in the eye and tell her that i endorse donald trump for president when he acts like this . I am not going to put my good name and reputation and my family behind donald trump for president when he acts like this. I just cant do it. And yet, here is what congressm congressman chaffetz tweeted yesterday. I will not defend nor endorse donald trump but i am voting for him. Hrc is that bad. She is bad for the usa. David, for all practical purposes, there any sort of difference between saying you endorse somebody and youre going to vote for somebody . Not for a public figure, jake. I dont understand this. This has been sort of the of this election cycle this has been one the weird language games people have been playing. Vote for but dont endorse. If you are a public figure and you announce who youre voting for, thats an endorsement. Jason chaffetz is probably experiencing obviously he has his own political needs that he is trying to take care of here, but it reflects what we see in the polls more broadly. When donald trump is mired in controversy that is dominating the headlines, its republicans who tend to flee him, not his diehard supporters but other republicans. When he stabilizes a little bit, they come back and help to support his number a little bit. I think we are seeing that play out with someone like Jason Chaffetz. I was on with don lemon that night and i listened to that Jason Chaffetz interview, and he said im out. There was no confusion that evening. And clearly he said he wasnt going to vote for Hillary Clinton, but i think that there is something to be said about these politicians who are acting like politicians and are saying, im not going to i dont endorse, but im not going to vote for Hillary Clinton. People dont want to parse your words. They want to know where you stand. If youre not you know, if youre not supporting donald trump, youre not supporting donald trump, just say it. Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in. Gloria borger and David Chalian. Thank you both. A new ad being compared to the controversial daisy ad. The person behind it joins me ahead. Talk to your doctor about xiidra. Welcome back to the lead, im jake tapper. Staying with politics. Donald trump and Hillary Clinton have sparred over who is more equipped to have control over the thousands of warheads in the u. S. Nuclear arsenal. Now a new proclinton super pac is taking direct aim at Donald Trumps judgment. His temperament as commander in chief. With this ad, which is airing in battleground state ohio. [ bombs ] one nuclear bomb can kill a million people. Thats more than all the men, women and children living in columbus, ohio. Theyre hearing a guy running for president of the United States talking of maybe using Nuclear Weapons. Nobody wants to hear that about americas president. Why are we making them . Joining me now is the man whose super pac is behind that ad. None other than former new jersey senator and onetime democratic president ial candidate bill bradley. Senator bradley, thank you so much for being here. Nice to have you. Good to be with you, jake. Senator, let me just start off with, i mean, this is this ad is evoking comparisons to the infamous daisy ad released by Lyndon Johnsons campaign in 1964. It only aired once, as you know. Young girl in a field counting flower petals. Cuts to a nuclear cloud. Incredibly controversial. But its credited with helping to win Lyndon Johnson reelection. Do you really think that its fair to say donald trump might start a nuclear war . I think that we have to ask ourselves who do we trust with our life when we are looking at a president ial candidate. And personally, i think that he doesnt have the experience or the ability to defuse a crisis diplomatically before it reaches the nuclear level. I mean, john kennedy was able to do that 50 years ago in the cuban missile crisis. Donald trump is not john kennedy. Then there is a problem with his personality. Its erratic, its undisciplined. He lashes out. I dont think thats the kind of personality that we want to have in charge of Nuclear Weapons in this country. I mean, then there is the question of his focus. You saw all of the debates. I mean, he focuses 40 minutes, maybe an hour, maybe 50 minutes. He didnt even focus an hour and a half. When you are the president of the United States and you are a nuclear power, you have to be on focus 24 7, not sometimes. Right. But this isnt the theoretical argument. You are suggesting in this ad that you think he could actually cause a nuclear disaster, right . I mean, thats what you think. I am saying that his personality and his absence of experience and his ability leads to the potential for miscalculation, misreading the intent of the enemy, and without and not having the leadership skills to defuse a crisis. Let me ask you, because donald trump has said that Hillary Clinton might cause world war iii, suggesting that that would be with the russians. You are somebody who has said that we should be trying better as a nation, or leaders should be, to repair our relationship with russia. Do you still feel that way, especially given all thats transpired with the wikileaks and the information that is coming from syria in terms of russias participation in the bombardment of civilians there . Yes. I think its important to have a dialogue to try to get agreement in areas particularly related to Nuclear Weapons where we can. I think, on the other hand, the russian involvement in our democratic election process is, in my view, outrageous, and i think that we simply have to reject that. And clearly, there is one beneficiary of that. With all the wikileaks coming. And i think that that will backfire. And i think ultimately people are going to say, we want to defend our democracy. The reality is that donald trump is taking positions against our democracy. I mean, you know, the whole thing with putting Hillary Clinton in jail, not abiding by the results. And today you saw a group of Trump Supporters saying revolution to prevent her from being inaugurated. I mean, jake, we all said the pledge of allegiance to the flag, and it ends with with liberty and justice for all. Youre pledging allegiance to american democracy. But donald trump is attacking american democracy. I think we should have the American People who care about it can be republicans, democrats, independents, its not just democrats, who can see the danger of a donald trump presidency, who understand the strength of american democracy, and know that we can improve it but it needs to be defended, not attacked. Former senator and famous new york knick dollar bill bradley. Great to see you. A tense showdown under way over a controversial pipeline. One of those protesters, actor mark ruffalo, joins us next. The sioux tribe is calling for the department of justice to investigate claims of Law Enforcement abuse. All this over a 3. 7 billion oil pipeline that crosses four states but would cross through what the tribe claims is sacred native American Land. The developer says the project would be an economic boom. 7. 4 billion barrels of oil. Protesters say the construction project would destroy burial grounds and potentially disrupt their water supply. Joining me now one of the protesters, actor and activist mark ruffalo. Thank you for joining us. You spent three days at the protest site this week demonstrating on behalf of the Standing Rock sioux tribe. What motivated you to join the protest . I made relationships with these people during the climate march here in new york. 500,000 people from all over the world gathered to stop climate change. And i also got to know some of them while we were making fighting against hydro fracking here in new york state. Ultimately, you know, a lot of the work i do has to do with protecting water, and thats what these people are doing there. And so i was invited by some of the folks i knew there to deliver a solar system to power the camp for the wintertime, wahala johns is a navajo leader who built the solar system and asked me to join her when we went to deliver it. Interesting. So the sioux and other protesters are saying that the Law Enforcement have been violent. Have you witnessed any violence against the protesters . I didnt witness any violence while i was there. But i witnessed and heard the stories from the young people who had witnessed and felt the violence. I met a girl who had her arm broken a few days ago. Many of the protesters had had encounters with the police in their arrests where they were thrown into jail cells naked, they were stripsearched. We had an encounter with the police yesterday. We went to one of the road blocks just to say hello and get a sense of the feeling there. And the feeling that the police were sort of emanating. And it was definitely there was two Police Officers with ar15s with their fingers right next to the trigger, with the dark sunglasses on. Very, very aggressive. Now, i spent the day on the camp, in the camp, the forward camp, the one you are seeing here, where people were engaged in prayer. Every Single Person you see there was trained in peaceful resistance, which means that no one is allowed out in that area unless theyve had some sort of peaceful resistance training. The mantra of the place is its not the police, its the pipeline that were protesting or protecting ourselves against. And they spend basically the entire day doing prayers, chanting. I have never been around so peaceful a stand. Its led by young people. You can see in these photos. The first people who began this whole movement were young people from 10 years old to 17, 18 years old. And the tribal leaders are still taking their lead from them. So, let me just ask you to play devils advocate. The developer says it is private land. They went through the permitting process. The tribe sued. They had its day in court. They lost. What do you say to that . What weve seen repeatedly happen to these people is they have made one treaty in 1851, 1861, and ever since then that treaty has been violated. That land that they are talking about, that easement, is actually treaty land. That is owned by the native American People based on the single treaty they made with the United States. That treaty supersedes any laws that the state might make later. And so today obama could literally could say that we are honoring the 1851 treaty and we are not allowing that easement to be taken as private property. Thats basically at the crux of the issue. That easement that theyre talking about as private property, based on the 1851 treaty, the standing treaty that these people made with the american government, is indian land, native American Land that belongs to the Standing Rock sioux reservation, and nation. Mark ruffalo, you get involved in a lot of environmental causes, but have you been involved with native american causes before . Yes. I stood side by side with my native brothers and sisters here when we were fighting hydro fracking in new york state. The pipeline is about to move through new york state, and were also setting up a camp just like this one in in the sioux country. Whats significant that people dont know is that this particular issue has brought together 500 tribes from all over the nation. Never in the history of our nation have all of the native american tribes come together under one issue. They see this as a very special, historical moment for them. Thank you so much for your time, mark. I really appreciate it. Let me tell you, there are people being really hurt there. I have been on the phone all day with them. Its very scary. These people are just like us. We cant forget our humanity in the face of these kinds of things. You have a corporation and a state who is working on behalf of a corporation to hurt our people. Theyre militarized. The National Guard has been called in. I mean, this is not an emergency. This is not a national emergency. These are peaceful protesters. The state department, the department of interior, the d. O. J. , and president obama himself have asked them to voluntarily halt any construction until this can be worked out in a peaceful manner. The governor of governor dal r of north dakota. If there is blood on anyones hands, its on his hands. Mark ruffalo, thank you so much. Well take a quick break and be right back. Your perfect record.
