Nearly all republicans and two democrats approving legislation that would block federal funding for one year, giving Congress Time to fully investigate wrongdoing of the provider. Host in our first 45 minutes, your thoughts on this boat that took place yesterday in the house of representatives. 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488001 for republicans. And, for independents, 202 7458002. It was on the floor yesterday that republican representative Marsha Blackburn talk specifically about the planned whatthood bill, specifically does, and why, in her words, it does not limit Health Services for women. Here is her on the house floor yesterday. [video clip] have found it so interesting that they continue to say that this will cut access to Womens Health care. No will not. You know that planned parenthood sees less than 2 of all american women in a given year . There is an amendment on this legislation by mrs. Elmers. Theedirects 235 million to federally qualified Health Centers. It will increase access because we have more of those centers and more under in more underserved areas. They are required to provide services. Land parenthood has cut those screeningsand cancer in half over the last few years while they have increased their abortions to 300,000 per year. Host again, the numbers. 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488001 for republicans. 202 7458002 for independents we start on the independent line joining from new york us. What do you think about the vote that took place yesterday on the larger issue of funding of planned parenthood . Caller i am encouraged about the vote. I think it should be not just this year, but permanently. I appreciate efforts taken to deFund Planned Parenthood because it is a special Interest Group. It is a special Interest Group that forces me to pay for things that i do not want them to be associated with, while it also takes is money that is congress and distributes it to like, n blackburn said, to federally qualified centers. I feel like the republicans are being genuine in trying to compromise a way with the democrats concerning money for Womens Health care although it should be permanently gotten rid of. Planned parenthood and these other Health Centers are basically special Interest Groups. Host what do you think of the effort in light of the fact that faced difficulty before in the house and the president would not sign any way . Caller if the president does not want to fight it, that is his responsibility. If he wants to shut up the government because the money is not going where he wants it, let him shut down the government. But the democrats shut down the government. Why is it always on the republicans . A dealhey work out whereby this money that was for planned butcher hood be distributed to other community Health Centers. Here is christina from ohio, republican line. I am calling because im so happy. Im so grateful they defunded planned parenthood. I wish they would have done this sooner. I think it is i extremely responsible on their part. Nothing but murder of children, my god. It is horrifying. I behind them 100 . That is my comments. Host next, our line for independents, North Carolina. Go ahead. Caller good morning. I have had illegal and legal abortions. The illegal one, i had to travel to another state to find someone. That was through networking. At the time, i was 20 years old. I had no one to go to. Friends thati had directed me in the right area. Im 67 now. I would not be where i am now after raising two kids, getting them through college as a single nother from gestation gestation, but conception at 40. I have had to deal with a child at 20. I was not mentally capable, financially capable. There is so much out there that is untrue. There are no tax dollars going or abortions and planned parenthood. This guy who just called it is a special edges group, if it is a special Interest Group then dont tie it to the federal budget where everybody is encumbered because of a few radical positions, especially , so manyit is defunded people they talk about , they arecenters already backed up. It is ridiculous how they have now. It the flood those community ienters with more people think it is Something Like 3 million it would really back for mammograms, pap smears, stds, which is what planned parenthood does for the most part. Only 3 of its functions go to abortions. Is it is myine body. I do what i want when i want with my body. Host ok. Marissa from montana, democrats line. You,r thank you, thank thank you. Good morning, america. Thank you for cspan. You are great. Oh my god. Thank you for brian. Thank you for booktv. Im so grateful that you provide an open platform for democratic conversation. If we have open dialogue, maybe we can solve all of our problems. My comments on planned parenthood is that it is not the quantity of people we have, it is the quality of life. They have proven that if we outlaw abortions, people will just south back street abortions. Like this lady said before me, are you financially, emotionally, and physically capable of taking care of children. We do not need to breathe like rabbits. We need to be responsible and responsible for the people we have. Can i ask cspan to bring up the conversation of humane treatment of livestock animals . It is very seldom spoken about. Could you please do some more on the whenever they talk about safety of food, they never talk about the humane treatment of animals. Thank you so much for this platform you provide. Thank you to barack obama for the open dialogue so that everybody gets to talk and there is not that loss of freedom that we had went bush was president. Now, anyone can talk about anything they want to. Thank you, cspan. Host lets hear from adam in california. Caller what im wondering is the things they are talking defunding land parenthood, their Services Provided under the Affordable Care act. We are mandated to carry insurance. Why are we still funding these services . Taking funding away from planned parenthood would not even affect abortions because there is no federal funding for that. Were talking about funding stuff that should be covered under the Affordable Care act. For first 45 minutes as 40, your thoughts on this vote that to his yesterday in the house. Two separate pieces of legislation on abortion related matters. One way deFund Planned Parenthood for the course of a year. Host if you take a look at a recent poll, at the time it was respondentsrcent of supported federal funding, tway 6 opposed it. 44 have a more negative view after watching videos, and 34 said their views were unchanged. Whatgives you a sense of is going on across the United States. Again, 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488001 for republicans. For independents, 202 7458002. James from kentucky, republican line. Caller thank you for letting me call. This thing about planned and theyre talking about abortion. Abortions are only about 1 of what planned parenthood does. Parenthood did nothing wrong. It helps the things theyre are doing is helping science and to cure disease. What they are doing is just wasting our tax dollars. We pay for these sessions in congress, and they know, the republicans know this is a wedge issue that divides people in this country, and that is exactly what they are trying to do. They dont want to have sessions in congress that help this country and talk about rebuilding our infrastructure, or anything like that. They just want to bring up wedge about wanting to shut the government down. That cost millions of dollars to shut the government down. Theyre just wasting money and it is just ridiculous what they are doing. City, adrian from panama florida, youre next. Caller i think it is time for women to start taking responsibility for their sexuality. And not have everyone in this country paying for their irresponsibility. I dont think planned parenthood is offering anything except abortion. Services thatthose can be received that can be received from your primary physician. Since everybody is supposed to have Affordable Health care, i dont know why we have to be spending all this money for people who are irresponsible in their behavior. Women want to be president. They want to be ceos, but they cant control their body . In 2015 . If you dont want to be pregnant, you dont have to be. Host the topic of services came jackie spirit highlighted a woman who received care from planned parenthood. Heres what she had to say. [video clip] because colleen went to planned parenthood, because she was in between jobs, and sought health care. She received a Breast Cancer exam at planned parenthood. She had stage to Breast Cancer. She is alive today because it was identified at a planned parenthood clinic, and they operated, and she is healthy. She is not the only one. 86,000 men and women who Seek Services at planned parenthood every year for breast , forr or four pap smears cervical cancer, who are identified as having a positive test result. As a result, they get care. 86,000. What you are saying is it is ok. Or 86,000 people to die that is how they were accessing their health care. Host by the way, if you want to see the whole debate that happen on the floor yesterday, you can go to our website, cspan. Org, and watch it for yourself. Just is up jeff is up next from fort myers, florida. Caller you know, i think we can make a balance here. I know people that have had abortions. Quick. They did not wait 6, 7, eight months. It was quick. They made the decision, got it done. Young peoplele make mistakes. Young people make mistakes. You know what, i even know one that was raped when she was 13 years old. She got an abortion. Do you think she wanted to carry that thing for the rest of her life . A white girl. I mean, come on. Cant we just make some kind of a decision on this thing . I really just dont get it. Host here is joe in florida. Caller hello. I heard the lady on that said she had had an abortion so she could have the money to raise her two children. I have to think that she has just killed her retirement. Who will take care of her in her old age. It does not make any sense. You are killing people. That is all i really have to say. From twitter, steve says if we should be defunding anything, it should be congressional salaries. Robert says, the founder of planned parenthood place their abortion clinics in minority neighborhoods. Durham, North Carolina, this is lorenzo. What do you think of the house vote that took place yesterday . Lorenzo, what do you think about the house vote yesterday . They should restructure it. Host how . Caller [indiscernible] from the top to the bottom, have new people. Host lets go to arthur in port arthur, texas. Caller good morning. This two years ago, in area, we had a hurricane. From that came federal funds that direct how people could utilize wanting to restore their homes and their lives. In so much that those restrictions were placed, i have real concerns that we hear Congress Talk about blocking money for programs when it has tools in the fans to put the requirements and any money that funds this program, how money is spent. I think, unfortunately, this has become the political football. I am no fan ofle abortions, i also know that the Supreme Court has ruled on it. I think it is congresses spots ability to follow the constitution in line with the separation of powers. I am concerned that this is an effort on the part of some people to change the balance on how the system is supposed to work. Like anyone else, i would like to know whether or not the accusations against planned parenthood is correct and accurate. Im not sure i can get an independent assessment for people who are willing to defund the program until the program can prove it is innocent. That is kind of counterintuitive determination the of guilt or innocence, dont you think . The list,y in indiana. Youre next. Aller thank you i guess what i dont understand parenthood is supposed to counsel people, girls, on birth control, or whatever they need done. It is not supposed to be on abortion. I guess what i dont understand is why are these planned parenthood clinics, they have abortion facilities, they are saying that none of this money is going towards abortion, yet when you watch those videos, you can see that planned parenthood about we dont have anything written, we have to be very careful about what we say. Knowems to me that they do that they are spending government money for that kind of a process. E should definitely Fund Planned Parenthood for what planned parenthood was supposed , not the other portion. When republicans say, we dont want to fund it, what they dont want to fund is the abortion part. What the sneakiness about what theyre doing, you know they are doing that. They are using some of that money. That, to me, is wrong. I totally believe women should be able to have an abortion if they want it. They either chose to have unsafe sex, or whatever. It is their responsibility to ,ay for their own aborted fetus not any of my money. I want my money to go towards helping girls and women that , ultrasounds, or whatever they need for their life, not to pay for their abortion. Sandrina in new jersey. Good morning. Caller i believe that planned parenthood should be funded. I believe the Republican Party attacking planned parenthood is another option of trying to stop abortions. It is a womans right to decide what to do with her body. Needed fors are those who need it. It is not to space on abortion not just based on abortion. Host once again, 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488001 for republicans. And, for independents, 202 7458002. On the front page of the Washington Post, their lead story about the choice to be secretary of army. It is eric fanning, who would be the first openly gay secretary, if approved by the senate. His Sexual Orientation seemed a nonissue among democrats and republicans in congress who are far more worried about the state of the army. Host if you go to the pages of the new york times, a story about the marines and how they are doing with the issue of women in combat. Host adele, memphis, tennessee, independent line. Good morning. We are talking with the houseful yesterday on planned parenthood. What are your thoughts on it . Caller good morning as well. My thoughts is that it is unnecessary. As a teenager, i went to planned parenthood. I was a virgin. I went to college. Fell in love. I came home and talked to my friend. He took me to planned parenthood to get on the pill. Theew up in a time in 1980s i graduate from high school we were just trying to be cautious. It taught me to check my breast each month and do things that are necessary. Im not an advocate for abortion, but i do realize the vast to do with someone else, their body, and god. I am not in favor of congress doing things like this. I think it is wrong, divisive, thingsir goal is to keep divided up there. I compare this to what happened with the gay movement. Congress was so against everything. You would hear them saying so many things. These republicans were so staunch against so many things, but in the end, they were the ones who passed so much. Now, everything has changed in this country. Ves in have secret li secret codes. I think that we, as the people, should try something, and i dont know what. Some sort of movement to stop them from tearing things up in this country. Planned parenthood was good for me. As a matter fact, i got off that pill and the very person that i went to college and felt love with, i married. Host from illinois, here is howard, republican line. Pedro. Good morning, one thing i have not heard planned parenthood is a very financially stable company. I dont even think it needs any support from the government. Theynd, you never heard are still getting their funding and everything. That is not the problem. It is what they are using it for. If they would just take this goes back to his payback on his donors when he first got into office. That is why he is such a staunch supporter of planned parenthood. If you want to shut the whole government down and blame the republicans, like they always do, then go ahead and do it. Thehave your money in planned parenthood, you use it. Or a butcher and abortion im not totally against abortion, there are sometimes when i think it is necessary. That is my comment. Journale washington wall streete of journal has a picture of a billboard in cuba. Here is the schedule that you can see on cspan. That starts next tuesday in maryland. In highland park, illinois, here is lou. Caller you know, i have a daughter. I just want to ask each republican listening to the show, if their daughter was imbecile, drug crazed who has some kind of medical infection like hepatitis, when they want their daughter to carry that fetus to term . Are you kidding . The republicans have to stop acting as if the Republican Party is a republican religion. They are playing god with each person in the United States. Lastly, how about all the babies and all the fetuses killed in . Raq when we invaded the country and. Estroyed people and property you never hear one republican call and say, oh my god, we killed babies in iraq because we were looking for weapons of mass destruction that were never there. I am very upset over the situation. I think republicans have to realize they are being played by their leaders, and this has nothing to do with politics. Host john in North Carolina on congressays, how did get involved in funding abortions and sexual intercourse in general . And, why cant people pay for . Uch services on their own dime alexandria, virginia, here is deborah. Go ahead. Caller good morning. I just wanted to say that i personally believe that all the democrats have done is get as in trouble with god. I believe the woman has the right to do whatever she wants to do with her body, but shame on the government for making all americans responsible. Thats all i want to say. Host from texas, randy is up next. Go ahead. Randy from houston, texas, go ahead. Caller hello . Host you will have to turn down your tv so you dont get feedback. Caller ok, is it down enough . Host thats fine. Go ahead. Caller hello, good morning. How are you . I tell you what, were going to put you on hold, we will come back to you. All we ask is that you turn down your Television Set so we dont get feedback and we can keep the conversation going. Lets go to jacob in fake torilla, texas, independent line. Go ahead. From anyy im Political Party because i dont feel represented by any group. If you chase the history of this thing back to margaret sanger, she was a racist. When they were over here in the state house in austin with wendy davis and her tennis shoes, there were people outside hailting hell satan satan. You can trace this back to the bible. Im just calling to say that this is the reality of this thing. Od help us all we need to all come to christ. Have a good day. Host lets go to randy again in houston, texas. Are you there . Caller yes, i am. Basically, ive been listening to this, and i keep your number for two taxpayers. Hearing people referring to taxpayers. The people who go to planned parenthood are also taxpayers. How are we going to take care of the children . That is all. Host from the wall street journal an update on the trial of bowe bergdahl. The Army Major General who led the investigation testified that he did not believe the soldier should be jailed for allegedly abandoning his post and afghanistan. He said that he was naive and disenchanted about his time in the army and seeking to draw attention to himself when he stuck away from his unit in 2009. He said, a prison sentence would not be appropriate. Host from california, suzy is up next. Republican line. Caller i wanted to say that. His is not just about abortion what they are doing in planned parenthood, and i watched all these videos, they are using the body parts baby parts to make profit. I very much worry about this country and the direction of the morality. If this does not get anybody something that is being done wrong, i dont know what will. If the republicans wont stand up for this, i dont know what they will stand up for. I remember last year, someone got put in jail for doing these things to fully formed babies. I understand that if it is early in the pregnancy, and it is legal to have an abortion, but they are doing things to these babies while they are still alive, and using their parts. It is not just about abortion and womens rights. It is about making a profit off of these human beings. Thank you. Florida, nna in republican line, go ahead. Caller good morning again. Im a second time caller. I want to stress about everyone calling in, they are calling in because they have a voice. The only reason they have a voice is because their mother chose not to abort them. To the lady who called an earlier and said she aborted two children, the only reason she has the right to day to say that is because her mother did not abort her. All you women out there, you need to wear a tshirt to say, i am for planned parenthood, but thank god i have a voice because my mother did not abort me. If you go to the miami herald this morning, there is a the newge story on rules on the embargo. It will allow for a business presence on the island and more travel and remittances. The u. S. Is helping to support ve. Cuban people by this mo marco rubio says that it raises serious questions about the legality of the Administration Rules by the obama imitation. Hi. Les, florida, caller im calling because i think so many people who are calling in about abortions and planned parenthood are really not thinking. First of all, planned parenthood is to give the woman the chance to learn more of her body. Not just pregnancy and abortions. Go and also, men need to then they would understand what this is all about. I think most of the people calling and have been misinformed. The only thing they are thinking about is abortion. That is not what planned parenthood is. I wish someone who works with planned parenthood would come on and explain this to them. Thank you. And political story highlighting the fact that three republicans joined democrats yesterday. You Richard Hanna of new york Richard Hanna of new york was one of them. He said, we all share a common goal to reduce the number of abortions in this country to zero, but the funding Defunding Planned Parenthood will not accomplish that goal. Pat from michigan, republican line. Caller hi. First off, most of the funding for planned parenthood comes from private sources. It is a very small amount from the government. Number one, it is illegal for any taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions. Company, ore a business, or to organization where money is pouring in from all sources, it is hard to tell whether taxpayer dollars are going towards it or not. Number two, when the videos came out showing these horrendous practices of planned parenthood, it is illegal to sell baby parts for profit. They are committing several fronts here. Fund e, if we do to deFund Planned Parenthood, that will not shut it down. I live in a very small town. Between two of us, there are at least three womens clinics that do everything that planned parenthood does. It is not like you are losing any services. As i said, planned parenthood will not shut down. They are still funded. Host joe will be the last call on this topic, new york, independent line. Aller good morning, pedro now, in the 21st century, we know so much more about the baby in the womb. Am i on . Host go ahead. Caller we have ultrasound. We see the baby in the womb. We use anesthetics because the baby in the womb feels pain. Yet, planned parenthood is using these 21st century techniques to kill the baby and harvest their organs, not necessarily in that order. I think Defunding Planned Parenthood is a must, and should be done with a sense of urgency. Any comments, pedro . Host we will let your comment be the last one. We will go on. Next up in the program, we will talk about potential Government Shutdown. Just a few days left until the money runs out to fund the government. Joining us to talk about that is. Dam brandon the conversation coming of next. Later on in the program, what issues are most important for africanamerican women who will vote in 2016 . On friday, the pope addresses the u. N. Ater, the pontiff for hold 9 11 memorial at the world trade center. Washington journal continues. Host we are now joined by the president and ceo of freedomworks, adam brandon, talking about the potential of a Government Shutdown. You wrote in a recent oped that this is really about spending caps. Give our viewers a sense of the possibility of a shutdown. Understand, de to c von capitol hill, when they were elected, they came in to get the spending under control. We are currently spending about 400 billion in interest. If Interest Rates go back to the historic averages, that means we will have to spend about 900 billion per year. Only five years from now, we will be sending more money on Interest Payments then we will on national defense. We obviously have a spending crisis. That is why you have a lot of these numbers, like in the House Freedom caucus, they are trying to get spending under control. Host as far as previous caps, have they been successful . Guest most people know it as the name sequester. Cutswere the only spending that we got. If you are going to start dialing those back, you have to have something else. I get the press releases from Speaker Boehner where he is very happy that Discretionary Spending has been flatlined. With some of the deals they are talking about, they will blow a hole through the sequester. Since you have the star of the Tea Party Movement of the republican congress, the only close to real reform has been the sequester. Host deals such as what . You said speaker bader is cutting deals, deals such as what . Guest the cromnibus, the Everybody Knows about. That is what i think people are most worried about right now. Host would you support a Government Shutdown over the issue of spending . Uest yes and no every day, i hear statements coming from the president saying, if you do this or that, i will not sign the bill, i will veto it. Republicans and up negotiating with themselves. Red lines and go in and try to negotiate from there. What i see happening right now you have to have the threat of getting spending under control. Host what do you think about the prospect of planned parenthood being a trigger of the shutdown . Guest there are many potential triggers. Listening to the show before, this is obviously a controversial issue. If that is the issue that brings is what will happen. The reason youre even having this debate is you have failed to have positive reform when it comes to spending. Host the president earlier talk to folks at the Business Roundtable and talked about the sequester and issues behind it. We will play a bit of what he had to say. [video clip] president obama the notion that we play chicken with an 18 trillion economy and global economies that are already skittish, just because of an issue around a Womans Health provider that receives less than . 20 out of every thousand dollars and the federal budget, that is not good policymaking. The last time republican shutdown the government, it cost our economy billions of dollars. Consumer confidence plummeted. I dont think anybody here thinks that will be good for your business. Last the idea that the shutdown, what it did to the economy. What do you think about those arguments and are they valid . Guest Government Shutdowns are not as unusual as people believe. I dont think anybody look that washington and says a shutdown is a positive thing to happen, but you have a lot of emotions on both sides. You have people like me looking at the looming debt, and if we dont get this under control now, youre just kicking the can down the road. Im sorry we have to shut down or National Park for a few days spendingme longterm reform, but that is a tradeoff to me. Host do you see it applied to military and the method . Guest everything needs to go on the table. Part of my philosophy, as a small government guy, there is an efficiency and everything. In everything. Host what would you ultimately like to see if you could craft the final package yourself . What do you think is important . Guest ideally, i would like to see congress to some longterm fundamental tax reform, entitlement reform. We may have to wait until the next congress for Something Like that to happen. In the shortterm, my ultimate solution is yes, lets preserve the cap. If you cant get those types of reforms, lets preserve the caps as they are. Im sure there are plenty of wealthy george soros, and others, who could step in. Actually, most people i talked to said that they would divert money from planned parenthood to other clinics to provide these services. When i look at the overall package, what i am concerned about is that you get worse legislation. I would rather hold the line today. Brandonr guest is adam of the group freedomworks. If you want to ask them about the potential shutdown and other issues he has brought up, including the effort to oust the House Speaker. 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488001 for republicans. 202 7458002 for independents. Overall, why remove john boehner as House Speaker . Guest you go back to the congress,of his last we had grassroots activists who worked really hard and that last election. When republicans took the house and senate, they were expecting things to happen. When you control the house and the senate, you expect stuff to happen. I remember a conversation with the congressman who said, we have to do something about anything. Right now, im not sure we have done something about anything. You hear about, what are our biggest clans . We will do the xl pipeline. Not big enough when you are dealing with the problems that we have. What im hoping we can see here with what is going on with the speaker is you see there is this caucus, the House Freedom caucus host mark meadows but the legislation out there to begin with. Guest exactly. They are think no more saying no more. What meadows is offering is hanging over the speakers had where if we do have some really bad legislation or if he decides to cut out the House Freedom caucus and pass bills with democrats, literally cutting off the republicans and using the democrats to get bad legislation through, then he will probably be relieved of his office. Host here is tampa, florida, mike is on our democrats line. You are on. Caller good morning. Could you be specific about what your plans are or suggestions for maintaining Social Security . Maintainyou want to Social Security. If you give specifically speaks to the issue, i would appreciate it. Guest literally about 10 years from now, you will have a real problem with the Social Security trust fund is going to run out of money. That is just mass. You will have a situation where only about 70 of benefits will be covered. That is a problem. What i would like to see as a ,olution of current retirees people over 50. You have your Social Security, great, keep that. Areger people, people who my age, we have the ability to take some about money and investing it in a 401 k so we can take care of our own retirement. I think that is the only solution. You go around the world and other countries have done similar things. It is the only way to ensure longterm retirement, but also you get younger generations the chance to have some wealth. Host richmond, virginia, john is up next. Caller thank you for taking my call. I just want to know i dont the difference, why do you have to shut down the government . Number two, how can john boehner make a deal when every time he gives up something to the democrats, you attack him, saying he is spending too much money. I dont understand. We say the government is the problem. In understand, everywhere the world today, they dont have a government to run, in syria and libya. When we attacked the government, we are attacking ourselves. This notion that every time we if you have aue great idea, why dont you run as a congressman and do something about it rather than criticizing the system . Guest first, im not an anarchist. I believe in a small government, a government of rule of law. When i look of the constitution and how are system was set up our system was set up, i think that was a pretty good design. Why dont like is the size of the government and what it has turned into today. When you are in congress and governing, it is a negotiation. That is what i would like to see. Actual negotiation. Shuttingalk about down the government, i dont want to shut down the government, and i dont think anyone does, but we have to make sure our issues are heard and every compromise i have seen, usually the compromise is we will spend more money today with the promise that 10 years down the road we will make changes in spending. I would like to see real cuts in spending today. Host romney in North Carolina, republican line. Good morning. Caller i have been listening to cspan all week. Ive been listening to the parenthood and the shut down because of abortion. There is one solution. Dont stopn if they killing bob babies. About le, it talks let that rest on congress. Thank you. I said before, i believe there are a few to the options for planned parenthood and the services that they are providing of reallocating those funds. Ais is an issue that strikes deep chord following those videos that came out recently. Host leo from New Hampshire. Caller a couple of things. One, you talk about the waste in government and how we can reduce cost. I hear nothing about the tax issue. I look around and see people , drivingor three homes ridiculously expensive cars. These people are not suffering. Yet, i see people strongly all over the place and these people. An afford to help out more the corporations can afford to pay their fair share. What do you think about that . Guest we have a Record Number of taxes. The problem is that is not on the revenue side. Flat tax tend to be a advocate. I think everyone should pay a fair proportion of their tax. You create a deduction for , but after that everyone pays the same exact rate. I think that is the only fair way to deal with it. I do get very nervous about the term fair share, because it is not really a mathematical phrase. Everyone is tenuous on what someone else is fair share is. Host the National Journal highlighted a story about the Republican National congressional committee, what happens if the government shuts down . Quotes codes quotes say the republicans do not support shutting down the. Ub the government overall this is about political concerns. Glad he is concerned about political concerns because i am scared about the longterm health of the country. It has you have to do things that are unpopular. Im not advocating for a Government Shutdown. The president is the one who is threatening to do it. He is saying that if there is no funding for this i am not signing the bill. What we need to do as a movement and as a party is to lay down our redline. Host she brought up the Freedom Caucus and one of the members decided he was going to resign this week. That is tom mcclintock. One of the things he says is that i know the agency sincerely supports his principles, but as i have expressed many times i believe the tactics they have deployed have repeatedly undermined the house passed housese passed ability. Guest this is a brandnew thing emergent emerging. These are either libertarian leaning folks or very constitutionally traditional members. This is a new breed of republican and they are having a hard time working with the speaker, but they are still trying to figure out how they work together, what theyre going to be advocating. There are going to be some growing pains. I am sure he will be working with the group in the future even if he is not an official part of it. Host but some of these concerns that he has expressed guest i understand that because i have concerns to, but at the end of the day you have to work with people, negotiate through it. To be ashink he needed critical of the caucus on his way out, but i am sure he is an advocate for he is an absolute crusader for lowering spending. Host president and ceo of the group freedomworks, if you go to they website you will see have an effort to remove the House Speaker, john boehner. How long have you been there, and what is a . Guest i have been at freedomworks for 10 years now. It is all in our name. We believe fundamentally that Freedom Works. We are for more personal liberty and economic liberty. I guess some people call it the libertarian grassroots advocacy group. What were trying to build a large constituency that advocates for personal and economic liberty. Host and you just sought their website. James from arkansas, democrats line. Go ahead please. Guest hello. Caller hello. My name is james, i am kind of nervous right now. Plenty of issues, but one is autism. And house been put in arkansas, due to a lot of budget agreements in washington can you explain to me how far freedomworks is willing to support autism, and eradicating office of . And eradicating autism . Guest first of all, you did a great job and you dont need to be nervous. I am not an autism expert, the closest i come is my dyslexia. Overall my general feeling is that when you look at these types of programs they are effective at the state level. What i look like but i look at what i Security Problems here timeshington are by the that the dollars get out to the states they are not being used as effectively as they could. Those dollars go effectively to the state go directly to the state or the state had its own program. Host and this is from twitter. Abouter says this farce this hype about the size of government assistance farce to privatize or and muchneeded services. Guest i First Response is i use Federal Express and ups is fine. A french author who years ago wrote a book called the law. He talks about these different problems when people say if you dont have discovered program, there is nothing. What we forget is it was created, and we realize what could we have had . These look at innovation are things that a few years ago we did not even think of. There are different ways you can deliver these services that may be cheaper, maybe more effective, 80 hold people more accountable. I will always err on that side of the equation. Host john from temple, texas, independent line. Hi. Caller i think congress is very hypocritical. They take both over and over again on the same thing with the same results, when they could be working on other problems. I think they are hypocritical because, number one, if you shut the government down all the people that work for the Government Contractors and such like that, they go in the lurch. Problemslems, mortgage , all kinds of problems when you do that. That is like cutting your nose off to spite your face. The next thing is, you talk about planned parenthood. They say that no taxpayer money should be used for any organization that supports abortion. If thats true and im a supporter of israel, but if thats true then why do we give aid to israel when they use our taxpayer dollars for government supported abortion struck a for government supported abortions . Guest sure. I think i would agree with what youre saying about the problems with the system appeared, and congress being hypocritical. I could not agree with you more on that point. The what youre saying about the employees and everyone who is hurting, Government Shutdown is a failure. It is a failure to get a deal done. But unfortunately it is a symptom of a greater problem, and we have to get very serious about Financial Health for this country. If that is what a small group of republicans to come together i also have to blame the president here for saying he is going to veto if this happens or if that happens. That is hardly a way to enter a negotiation. Conservatives have to take the same tactic as the president. Guest back to Speaker Boehner for a minute. Who would you want to see in his place . Guest thats a great question. The importexport bank is the First Program i have seen showdown in a long time. You asked earlier if military cuts were on the table and i said everything should be on the table. I think too often conservatives get branded as this movement for the wealthy, this movement for corporations. That is why it is so important out so important to point it is about spending of all sizes. So i would like to see someone with that courage, but other than that i am pretty much open to whoever would want to throw their hat in the ring. Theso believe that it next speaker would understand that if it were not for the people in a Freedom Caucus they would not have their jobs. My guess is when you hear complaints about the Freedom Caucus it is things like lets take three days to read a bill. You have the new speaker who allows three days to read the bill. Im sure the caucus is going to the new happier with speaker, no matter who they are. And others think that boehner should stay in his job. Take a look at this and respond to it. [video clip] number one i think hes done a good job. Number two, to vacate a chair is to simply have procedural chaos and i am not for that. By and large my view is we are much better off with john speaker,as eager as and i wholeheartedly support him. Host he uses the word chaos. Would you agree that the move would cause chaos . Guest no. I would say it is unusual that i believe washington is so broken that a little chaos like that will go a long way to fix the problem. Host kevin mccarthy, the current majority leader, he says he wants him. Guest it would be very interesting to see who would end up serving their hat and the right. That is the obvious choice because he is the next set up, but eric cantor was the next person but he was roundly rejected by his voters back in virginia. I think the whole europe of the next man up that whole euro era of the next man up does not apply. Host your organization gets a lot of real estate. Someat about the fact claim that you are using this as a fundraiser method, is that a fair claim . Guest i would say whatever you washington, here in that is not a good fundraising ploy. The only reason we still exist right now as we had 82,000 82,000 donors last year of donations under 100 or less. If we were smart and went with the party line, there are millions of dollars available for anyone who will tell the party line. When we are trying to do is change the dynamic. We want to be the group who supports the Freedom Caucus we want to it support these caucus members. Host do you want to give us a figure . Guest we raise a couple hundred thousand dollars. I dont know what the specifics would be. Host west virginia, this is carol, for our guest. Go ahead. Hi. Er i have a question for mr. Brandon. Someone called in about Social Security, and my question is this. If an employer has a job with a company that does not have a Retirement Plan, and in 10 years when that person retires what are they supposed to do in Social Security runs out . , keep the people that are retired, if if they had a Retirement Plan through their work. I have another comment about planned parenthood. There is a bill floating around in congress stating that after five months and abortion cannot be done on a fetus. Actually i think that is a good plan, and with abortion rights i feel i am a democrat, but i still feel that life is important. But there are women that go through trauma that end up pregnant as a result. They should not be made to go forward with that. That is something between her family, the doctor, and that right and then. First on Social Security, your point is exactly right. If the fund the starts to run out of money, it runs out of money. What im trying to avoid is a situation where overnight politicians for their hands up , weer like, groups, oops are out of money. There are things you can do now when you see a crisis coming down the road. The adjustment that icy is you give certain people that are closer to retirement, they bought into a certain system, they need to be in a certain system. Younger folks should have systems Social Security was designed for the 1930s. Today we need to have systems that are portable, employee matches, things like that. People need to control and own their own retirement and security. Those are the reforms i would be looking for in the long run. Host morgantown, North Carolina, paul, you are on the line. Caller please let me finish the comments i have. First of all i would like to say Social Security was a solvent program until the end of nexen and the reagan. The end of nixon and reagan. They will talk about it going broke and in the same sentence turn around and talk about giving billions to israel or to another country for armament. About theear talk profitsharing and all that. Put an end to that back in the clinton era. They pushed everyone towards profitsharing, and then when the economy collapsed in 2008 banks still everybodys money. Then they lost the money after stealing it and then we gave them our taxes to bail them out and they laughed all the way to the bahamas. Now we are talking about doing the same thing all over again, that certainly does not make any sense. Then they have downsize this country industrial he threw fair trade industrially threw fair trade. We have lost all of our jobs. Half. Ut the tax base and everything the republicans have done has led us to this system, folks who have, and folks who have not. Then they want to build on the backs of the havenots. Host lets get a response. Aest certainly a response law to respond to their. It is true that the Social Security trust fund has been rated for decades now. I dont trust congress with my retirement. They are going to raid it and put it in an iou, all that is is a promise that some future congress has to fill it back up. I dont believe they have the ability to do that. What is going to happen is people who are counting on the system will be left holding the bag. Dr. Younger folks in their 20s, very few of them believe there is going to be anything left for that. Lets take a look at what works and lets try to figure out new systems where you have affordable savings account that people can control and own and be responsible for. They can end up with a much better rate of return, much more comfortable retirement than they are facing right now. Gree, Freedom Works freedomworks was one of the leaders against the bank bailout. But i want to address one of the chief things he was talking about was growth. This has been the worst recovery in modern economic history. Usually america grows at about 3. 5 per year. In the postreagan issue in the postreagan era we grow at 4 per year. We should be two or three debt two or three debt two or 3 trillion larger. That is close to 24,000 more per household, etc. We have, where your average household has actually lost 7,000. Tax reform, regulation of form, dialing back regulations from the obama era. Let the economy grow. All these problems are talking about, if you dont have growth it will be a hard road to hell. A hard road to hoe. Host what about these numbers showing that the deficit was 530 billion . Thanks mainly to higher revenue. Earlier, i mentioned tax revenues are higher than they ever happened before. The problem is that it is so far below our historical average, and when you look at the obama starts, those numbers skyrocketing and it is trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. That is not going to work automatically. Margaret thatcher had this great thesewith the problems of government programs, sooner or later you run out of other peoples money. We need to think differently about spending and we need to think differently about how we grow this economy. , he this is adam brandon is the president and ceo of freedomworks. Colleen, you are. Colleen, you are up next. Caller good morning. How about we agree to have an investigation of planned parenthood, continue the funding , and if they discover the things they are being accused of are in fact true, defund. Then congress can get to the tax to the issues of Social Security, medicaid, and defense spending. Guest i agree with your sentiments there, this general frustration of why does this have to come to the very end. When you talk to members of the House Freedom congress caucus, this is their number one concern. We could have been dealing with this problem back in february or march, but the way Speaker Boehner runs the conference is, thats wait until the very end when you create this artificial crisis and then we have to do this, where you drop off this cliff. We know these different clips are coming different cliffs are coming, why cant we deal with it months in advance . Host we talked a lot about mitch mcconnell, what is his role in this . He has artificially surrendered to the president when he said he is going to veto this, so we cant do it. Falls under the header of negotiating with yourself. I would like to see a little bit of background and say, the redline is here. It is a tough job, but he signed up for it. Jim, brownsville, oregon, go ahead. Caller let me say this. I have been trying to get on for a long time so give me a little bit of time or it give me a little bit of time. This guy is about as far off as anyone could be. First of all, he talks about spending. He could care less about spending. Congress could care less. The republicans here is what they talk about right now. All the people that are running for office, kill isis. Take all the oil. That is what trump said. We need to do all these things, have a strong military, get rid of all i mean this costs money. How are you going to be the Strongest Military in the world and not spend money jacket they dont care about spending. A wants to kill everybody. They take the unions they dont care about money. They dont care about spending. They want to kill everybody. Than has created more jobs anybody since he has been in office. He actually stopped the congressional jobs, and this guy sits there like all the republicans and blames president obama for everything. He should be ashamed to sit on national tv. The American People are not stupid. Host we want to get a response. Guest for the record, i have never killed anyone or want to kill anyone. There is a lot of blame to go around, but when he gets back to the job issue, that this is a pathetic recovery. We are about 6 million jobs shy of where we should be. 2s economy should be trillion or 3 trillion larger. The middle class has not had a pay raise in 25 years. Euroyou look at the reagan , you had 4 plus growth, yusor real middleclass rise. That is the way economics works. We have to get the economy going. The only reason that the economy has grown at all this is the irony of ironies is because of the fracking boom and the shale gas boom. If you take that away we probably would look much more like europe, with 0 growth. Host alan in louisiana. Good morning. Caller good morning. Sit here morning after morning as i watch this program, and time after time i see these Republican People come on here and say more of the same. Ronald reagan, with his reaganomics tactics, gave a half 1 trillion tax cut to the wealthy and to corporations. That was, say, 40 years ago. Times multiply 40 years have a trillion, that is what we are in debt. This man keeps saying doing the same thing, put the pedal to the metal and it will get better. Its not. The only reason he dares to get on tv and say stuff like that is because of the rightwing media. Anyone that believes that newsnational Corporation Media is liberal, is to down to dumb to breathe breed. They should be spayed and neutered. Forget abortion. Host from nina in florida, republican line. Hi. Caller hi. You hear a lot about the rape and incensed cases because of abortion, i would like to know what percent of abortions are from those incidents in set of just women being irresponsible, knowing they can go out and get an abortion if they get pregnant. I am an economist type of guy. Abortion is really not my subject. That is out of my area of expertise. Host a story in the republican post a story in the Washington Post this morning. 10 references to the middle east, for to the middle class, three to single parents, he adds dead right on that. I agree with him 100 . Goal is by the time we start getting closer to iowa and New Hampshire, all republicans are talking about what america could be if we get back to 4 growth rate. What that story should be. And all of the shale that. We should be screaming that from the rooftops. When you invest in these types of industries, when you allow capital to be formed, you get growth. When you get Economic Growth the caller called about reagan that is when you see middleclass incomes rise. One of the previous callers mentioned something about taxes. United states has the highest Corporate Tax rate in the world, and because of that you are seeing more of more more and more of our Countries Companies leave the country. You have got to cut Corporate Taxes to be presented. Put out a plan that was criticized saying if you look at the phases of it it might not work. I dont know if you say the same thing. Guest historically this country is growing at three and a half percent. That has been our story is pretty much at the beginning of our republic up until about five or six years ago when we started getting sidelined. But when you talk to employers and you talk to job creators, you talk to people with foreign capital. When you have these low Interest Rates like we do right now, all it is doing is like sugar for the economy. It is not real investment. You want to create a climate that takes that capital and invested in a business. When you look at the amount of potential this country has, when you look at the potential that we have, some of the new regulations on things such as obamacare, if you go back to where we were. Stop some of these co2 regulations. Just take the brakes off the economy. Really quickly we will go back to three and a half percent. If you elect someone to congress pushing progrowth initiatives, you can get to 4 . Host Federal Reserve keeping rates low, good or bad move . Guest bad move. Very bad move. When you have money that is basically free there is no responsible way to decide what high should invest that money. When you put a small price on money than you can say ok, what is the highest value use of this dollar . When you see the zero rates that we are having right now, i see companies do things like take their profits and do share buybacks. That does very little for the economy. We should be able to take our profits and invest. When you get such a low rate of return you miss out on the capital. Host you raise the rates, you also potentially raise credit cards, mortgages. Guest sure. [no audio] caller they have to revert back to being a private citizen is like the rest of us. Thank you very much. Guest a lot i could react to their. Philosophically i love term limits. I think that could be part of a longerterm solution. However, a lot of congressmen like one of my heroes out of oklahoma has self term limited himself. What is hard for me is when i look at someone who self term and it is kind of like unilaterally disarming. I would like to get to a point where either everyone is term no good conservative step down before they should. Agoou remember a few years we used to have all of these town halls . I thought that was a really effective part of our democracy. One of the things that has sat me the most in recent years is how few congressmen are now having town halls. That started back in the obamacare debate when people got really nervous facing their constituents. That is a problem with that does not happen. Even if congressmen are running and hiding, one of the most effective ways you can reach them is on facebook. I guarantee you they look at those comments. If you cannot find them, please go to the Facebook Page and leave a comment. Host if we get a shortterm extension of the budget what happens then . Second you support something you support . Guest kicking the can down the road. Rather than fixing a problem we continue to kick the can. These problems are getting worse. Host the group is freedomworks and their president and ceo is adam brandon. That is their website. Thank you for your time. Coming up we are going to have a discussion on issues facing africanamerican women as they look to voting in 2016. We will be joined by Melanie Campbell of National Coalition of black civic participation and Vanessa Deluca, editorinchief of essence magazine. We will have that coming up when washington journal continues. , this sunday night on q a Washington Post National Political reporter robert costa on the 20 16th president ial campaign and the similarities between donald trump and 1992 candidate ross perot. Are reallyes overlapping. I think perot had a distinct personality, the celebrity factor was not there in the same way that attract people to trump. You see people just throwing themselves at him for his autograph. There is a power with his personality that perot did not have, but being outside of washington and the Republican Party their relationship with trump has been rocky this year. I broke the story that the Republican National committee called trump and say, can you tone it down on immigration . Who knows what the pledges were. We can see this year what happened with perot, happen with trump. Keeps talking about wanting to be treated fairly. If anything he is unpredictable and he could easily run as an independent regardless of his pledge. Sunday night at in eastern and pacific on cspan today. Joining us nows to talk about issues that africanamerican women will face as they go to the old in 2016. Our guests are Melanie Campbell, she is the ceo of National Coalition of black civic participation. Also joined by Vanessa Deluca of essence magazine, she is their editor in chief. Welcome. The poll yourith organizations have worked together on. What is it and what were you trying to find out . Guest we wanted to make sure that we were able to say, what from thewomen want next president of the United States and not just make assumptions about what we think. What do they want to see the president address . , yourand Vanessa Deluca magazine helped with this. What was your role . Poll to ourened the panel as well as our media followers. We received an enthusiastic response right away, right off the bat, which proved to us as we found with the poll that we are engaged with the election process, that we are definitely planning on voting and are registered to vote, and that we know our responsibility to vote. I believe 64 of the people who participated said they really feel strongly it is our responsibility to vote. Host when you took a look at the findings you saw the top three things that black women were looking at as we go into 2016 Affordable Health care, living wage jobs, and college afford ability. Talk about those kind of those categories. The reality is that africanamericans live in the south. A lot of us live in the south. You donttates have governors who embraced the afford all caps the Affordable Care act. Medicaidality is, expansion has not taken place in a lot of these places. ,eople who need affordability they dont have the access to health care. Health care is one of the number one drivers of act of impacting your economic situation. So for black women, who are primarily heads of household, that is a major impact. That is one of the reasons that we saw that being number one. Host Vanessa Deluca and vanessa , living wage jobs are a priority. Was that a surprise . Guest not really. Many of our audience are heads of household. Making a living wage and being able to bring home money that can push their family forward and take care of their family take care of your needs, your Health Concerns that is of critical importance. This whole idea of raising the minimum wage is very much of interest to our audience. They see that it directly impacts how they are going to be able to set the future for their s. Milies ra host how do you think the administration has done on that issue . Guest i think they have done a lot to look at, before you even get to the living wage, looking , having access to great Public Education. That is something that is really key. That sets the stage for what kind of wages were going to be able to earn going forward. I believe that their focus on opening those gates so there is more access for everyone thatcially our community is a key piece. Host and if you want to pose questions, here is how you can give us a call. Democrats, 202 7488000. Republicans, 202 7488001. Independence, 202 7488002. You brought up the issue of medicaid, but we now have an Affordable Care act. Was it still surprising that even if we have that in place that Affordable Care what a big issue . Actt the Affordable Care did a lot of things but it did not solve all the problems of having access to Affordable Health care. Is there are re, you have the states not affecting accepting the opportunity to provide access to Affordable Care, which provides you with a Affordable Health insurance. That is what we are getting down to. March. N your show in we looked at the issues from our report. In there we talked about health care and the reality is that for black women, you have states where we dont rank very high when it comes to access to Affordable Care. There is a direct correlation between that report and the report where you show that we are not doing well. It was definitely a trend that says ok, we understand that. When you talk about economic situations, the issue of Health Insurance or health care, or having a problem where you may end up with Health Issues that could impact your bottom line essence, ience of and we were so pleased and sinker so much for partnering we were able to get to a serious audience of black women who are either registered ifvote or plan to register they are a millennial just coming into the process. Voters. Alking to they have a good understanding. President obama has stated, there is more work to be done. But a lot has been done. I dont have the numbers in my head, but millions of people have registered. Who hadabout a brother not been able to get any health care for as long as i could remember, and he has been able to have health care over the last two years because of the Affordable Care act. My big brother called me and told me this. It was like the last day. He has been able to do that two years in a row so that he could have a better quality of life and go to a doctor of choice as opposed to a clinic. Far as those potential voters are concerned, for those responding to the poll, 78 identified as democrat , as representing the interests of black women. Felt republicans are libertarians represented their interest. Can you expand on that . Guest what those numbers mean is that there is no one party that has the black womens vote locked in. That is an opportunity for the candidates to truly speak to these issues that we brought up in our poll. Have theo grateful to opportunity to bring light to these issues. Notice and some of these debates, and number of these issues have not really been spoken about. It will be interesting to see as the Campaign Wraps up, how well the candidates speak to these issues. If they want black womens votes they are going to have to speak to a lot of those, and hopefully they will space to all of it. Was there any indication that they may not vote because there is not a black person . Guest 98 of people who participated in the poll said they were either registered or planned to register. Said, our Community Feels that the opportunity to vote is a responsibility. You think about, this is the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights act. We are not taking that for granted. There have been so many attacks on Voting Rights. We are not taking the power for granted. We want to encourage black women to make sure that we leverage this power that we have and use it to push for the things that are going to make our community stronger. Untilour guests with us 9 10 to talk about these issues for black women as they go forward in 25th 2016. Our first call, brenda, in texas. Caller thanks for taking my call. , ladies, and i really hate to post this question but i need an answer. Lets qualify a couple of things. I am retired from a Major Corporation at a time when they paid well and there were 401 k s and all of that. I am not hurting. Fromughter graduated baylor university. She had a postgraduate degree as well. Before 30 she was making six digits. We are not hurting and my family. Family, history on my my older sisters played a big not in immigration immigration, but the breaking of the segregation, an Independent School district here in houston. We are not Clarence Thomas and neither are we out of west. , getting to my point, my concern is illegal immigration, and what impact it andaving on our children the black community. In texas you can imagine how inundated we are with the when theyand i think are in a management position, the hispanic people, they. Romote and they hire their own they dont embrace us. A sister is a judge and she was running for a judgeship here in texas back in 2014. I worked the campaign. I think it was the Hispanic Chamber of commerce , they did not support not one black candidate that was running for judgeship. They threw their support behind the white republicans. I want us to really take a look at this. I know what the bottom line of this thing was, but they dont have a vote if they are illegal. Host you put a lot out there, we will let our guest respond. Guest first of all, the issue of undocumented immigration is something for the black community that really, we are building a Stronger Alliance between the africanamerican and latino communities to find ways to work closer together around issues. We are stronger together and being divided. Of the things is that Immigration Reform is one of those things that was only 8 . So when you talk about how we can come together so we can you talk about the disparities with africanamerican communities, the secondmost impacted are the latino communities, people of color. We need to talk about the issues we know we are facing. We have Voting Rights that are under attack. We work in coalition with our latino brothers and sisters around these issues, so that where we may have some issues of concern we work through those things. One thing that is true, if you dont know someone, you go with who you know. More africanre americans, white folks, they tend to hire white folks. We have to get to know our communities so that we can be stronger, it is at the end of the day we all want quality of life. Ms. Deluca, do you want to add anything . Guest when we talk about Immigration Reform we talk about undocumented communities, the conversation tends to reflect the right. But we know there is a much broader audience, a much broader segment of people who fit into that. Maybe the conversation needs to begin with, how do we brought in those definitions so that we are wrapping our arms around everyone who falls into that category. Brett from sanford, North Carolina. Democrats line. You are next. Taking myank you for call. I just wanted to make a comment. I was watching a survey or whatever they call, the number one voting group for blacks here in the country, black women voters came out number one. I thought that was extremely impressive, and i just wanted to we see it, and i really appreciated. Thank you. Guest thank you so much for pointing that out, as you are absolutely right. In the last two president ial campaigns black women led the voter turnout. We just want to ensure in the 26 election that that will continue and even grow, especially a month millennial. We found that millennials in particular are very interested around College Affordability, for obvious reasons. Anyone who is going to be addressing that particular issue somenk is going to have great ways into appealing to millennials. Guest did he say North Carolina . We want to make sure we are working with folks down in north , and that one of the reasons we wanted to do this poll early was that we needed to this is not about seeing who becomes the nominees, but really finding a good way to share this information with candidates and being able to really push that. We hope that in North Carolina you are able to utilize this information to make sure that black women and black man and the whole Community Comes out. North carolina is an exciting state. Many lack so black people and universities. Make sure you turn out that vote. Leroy, here is leeway for michigan. An independent. Caller thank you for taking my call. Emphasis on of science, mathematics, education in the black community. Immigration you did mention. Community, spanish especially the Arabic Community here in michigan, you black people as their competitors. They dont believe the they dont do these people as people to come into coalition with. Black men are at the bottom of the economic totem pole, especially employment. Since black women have this very chunk, you barely rarely see them give us a hand up. It is mostly the white women who even mention that black men are on the bottom. Guest one of the things that we did this is as my wearer of two hats from the National Coalition of black civic participation, we had a black mans coalition. I worked with reverend tony lee and some other brothers to develop a black man day on capitol hill. We see that black men have to be able to come together to address those issues. We are looking at young black men and boys from across the country walk the halls of congress to get trained on advocacy and being able to go and walk the halls of congress and meet with republicans and democrats to talk about those issues. Some of those issues that they addressed that were impacting black man, of course include criminal Justice Reform and a good quality Public Education. I was notman blessed with children, but i have got nieces and nephews. The reality is for black women, we have to be leading our own issues. For black men, the same. In our organization i dont think we have that issue. I know people who are working tound social justice, we try work in our individual capacities as women, but also we come together in a way as a community so that we can impact all of us. That is how we are trying to address issues that impact black people. Host and since the viewer mentioned education, in their poll 38 of respondents say College Affordability was a concern, right after that, quality Public Education. Guest having access to quality Public Education for many in our community, Public Education is what is most available to us. Having the opportunity to have a community where your school down the street has the best teachers, has great training, has some of the things the caller talked about with stem, having access to ap courses. That is something that is not always made available in our community. That came out in the poll. Host walter up next, baltimore, maryland. Independent line. Caller good morning. Ladies, i am truly an independent and i love you guys and thank you for your organizations. But my question and my focus this morning would just be that there are issues that are corrupted by the media and the right wing, and in particular the black lives Matter Movement. It is now being redirected as a big joke. But i beg your indulgence in trying to reach out to that. As abrother setting brother said earlier, the core issue begins at home. We have got to participate. Doggone the registration, participation is most important. I beg you to speak to the black lives Matter Movement this and also the criminal denial of health care and the criminal denial of justice by these republicans,. , from congress to their state legislators. It is criminal the way these guys are denying the right to vote, health care, justice. Please if you cant speak to that. I will be trying to find you on the internet. If you saw our february issue, or the first time in our essence didy, not have a person on the cover. He had simply the words, black lives matter. We discussed all aspects of this conversation, including members of the movement. Specifically the three women of color who created that , lack lives matter. We invited them to talk about some of the things that need to be addressed, particularly in criminal Justice Reform, police reform. Looking at issues of coming together and supporting each other. Addressing some of the tensions that are between some of the Old School Civil Rights leaders and some of the new school. All of these things that we have been talking about throughout the year and we will continue to do so. We firmly believe that this is a Pivotal Moment in our history, and it would not we would not be doing our do till if we were not to cover it. Us, being able to work intergenerational he intergenerational he , having theionally opportunity for folks to support you in your leadership is incredible. Each generation has what i call their movement, movement moments. They grab that. Ist makes the movements day being able to connect the protest and resistance to policy and politics. Had several of those younger asders who were at the table we continue to dig deep on this ,urvey, from black lives matter from New York Justice league, and others. Networks, all the folks who were really doing the work on the ground, but also across the hall of congress and in the states where it matters. Think that this generation is here to stay when it comes to fighting injustice, for civil rights, social justice. From issues that we saw millennialist, college of portability being number one, quality education number two, criminal justice and policing, and the right to reproductive justice issues were critical. Those are also, as the caller , issues that are under attack. Votingrights is at rights is about access to our democracy and being able to have the ability as a woman to control your own body. I cannot get into pointing , but the reality is there are some partisan facts about what is happening and who is attacking around Voting Rights. Congress has yet to call for a hearing on dealing with Voting Rights reform, the Voting Rights advancement act. We have had the 50th anniversary of selma, of bloody sunday, this year. Vote and howthe that impacts us to be able to deal with any of these issues. To make that decision . Us this guess joining morning. Melanie campbell of the National Coalition of black civic participation. Of essencesa deluca magazine, editor in chief. Our next caller from indianapolis, hi. Caller number one, i think black people really need to work with their young black boys to let them know that the prison institutions are making money of
