And i think this chaos were seeing around the world to some extent a direct result of the president s choices to focus here on the United States and not involve the United States more in these overseas conflicts and tumult. Martha its a stunning reality, if that is indeed the case. When you look at the responsibilities of the executive branch, you know, protect the country from any threats that may come from abroad is one of the foremost responsibilities of the president of the United States. So if it is true what youre saying that this president has turned his back on that responsibility to some, might say a great extent, what does that tell us . What, where does that leave us, steve . You know i think the way he would argue it is, the United States over the years has actually been responsible for some of the threats that weve seen come back to the shores here. When you talk about his opposition to the iraq war, for instance. He suggested that our involvement, our being aggressive in prosecuting that war led to some blowback to the United States and so by taking a less forwardleaning posture, he is actually doing more. You know the president had an interesting line in a speech he gave at fund raiser in seattle today he talked about chaos in the world. One of the reasons that people are feeling anxious today and he suggested it was simply part of Natural Evolution what he described as old world order to a new world order based on what is he said was common humanity. You look the way he run Foreign Policy not just for past couple years but past six years that is totally consistent with the philosophy he discussed there. Martha at time he it is not. Breaking news we have received the word that the french fighter jets have now located missing algeria passenger plane in mallly. Unbelievable were seeing another passenger plane crash in just a short period of time. Peter doocy joins us live in washington. Peter, what more do we know now . Reporter martha, as you said the two pretty much fighter jets located missing al gear flight 5017, crashed in mallly. According to our producer in paris who is in touch with the French Ministry of defense. Were waiting to hear whether or not any of the 110 passengers, more than half of whom are french, or the six members the flight crew, all from spain, survived the impact. Here is what we know right now. Almost 13 hours ago that crew asked air Traffic Controllers in niger if they could change their flight path to algiers from burkina faso. But md83 was only in the air 50 minutes before disappearing from radar. We know u. S. Carriers are told by the faa not to fly too low over mali because of insurgent activity on the ground. It is not clear what violence if any was underway when the plane went down. They dont believe according to ap that any militants in mali have firepower could knock a plane like this out of the sky at cruising altitude. Martha. Witnesses say he was sedated at first but then began gasping for air. His lawyer tried to hustle and stop the whole thing in the middle of the process but he was unable to get a stay before the convicted, the convicted murderer passed away. In 1989, lets go pack to this crime and tell you what he is guilty of. Woods shot and killed two people. He shot and killed his former girlfriends father while she watched in the Auto Parts Store that the family owned. He then took her life, shooting her twice, once in the abdomen and once in the chest. Now all of this came after he was accused of stalking her and abusing her and he had been issued an order to stay away from her. Now the family of those who were killed says they feel no mercy for his final moments. I dont believe he was gasping for air. I dont believe he was suffering. Sounded to me as though he was snoring. You dont know what excruciating is. What is excruciating seeing your dad lying there in pooled blood. Seeing your sister lying in a pool of blood. That is excruciating. This man deserved this. I shouldnt call him a man. He deserved everything he had coming to him. Martha see and hear it in the voices in members of those family who felt nothing for the way that he died. Lars, you obviously reignites the whole question about the Death Penalty in this country. What do you make of it . Well, what i make of it is the Mainstream Media will try to say this is a reason to stop the Death Penalty. The problem is, the vast majority of americans, more than 70 , support the Death Penalty. I think the real justice here is that it took two hours for this man to die. It took 25 years to get to executing joe woods for killing debbie dietz. That is the real crime here. Not the fact that this guy snored on his way to hell. He deserves to be there. And he is dead now. How is that a botched execution . And stephanie gresham, spokeswoman for the attorney Generals Office in arizona, says all he was doing is snoring. Big deal. Martha doug, what do you think . Well i see it a different way, martha. I think in a society like ours we have to look very, very closely at policies that produce results where people are writhing for two hours. Where we dont have clear and objective ways of administering the Death Penalty. Im not against it but with a number of executions that have been shown through the innocence project, to have been wrong, to have real issues with law enforcement, and real issues with administering the penalty, i think it deserves a reexamination and a serious one in light of this situation. I dont make light of the murder. I dont minimize it. But i think we need to look at whole question of the Death Penalty again. Martha lars . Martha, the fact is in the modern era of the Death Penalty since the Supreme Court decisions in the 60s, there hasnt been one single wrongful execution and doug schoen should know that. It is simply untrue. There have been people who have been sentenced to death and then on appeal they have been relieved of that sentence of death. But we havent had a single provable, wrongful execution in america in the modern era of the Death Penalty. Martha lethal injection was created to be a more humane way of putting people to death. And, you know, turns out in some cases it may not be performing that function. And i think that raises the question about other methods. About perhaps firing squad, execution. Doug, do you think that may be more humane ultimately . I think it is certainly is a clear alternative we can consider. I think that, frankly, in our kind of society with our values, as we go around the world, we is to have Better Administration of our penalties, fairer and more just administrations to be the beacon for the world. We go around the world saying what is happening in iraq, afghanistan, ukraine, is unacceptable, and bottom line, unless we as a people are able to hold our heads high and come together as a society, we cant be a strong advocates values as we want and should be. Would it be more humane, because there is consideration of this, to scrap this method, that some people find inhumane, even given the heinous crime with which this man was convicted, there was no doubt about that from anything covered in this case, do you think a firing squad is more humane way of executing in. Martha i have no objection to hanging or firing squad but you can still make lethal injection work because, if it werent for the intercession of some of these antiDeath Penalty groups, we would still have the same cocktail drugs by the way used by your veterinarian when you have to take your dog or cat in to have a dog or cat put down. Those are some same drugs used on death row inmates. The fact sometimes the end result is a man snoring for two hours before he finally expires should not be an 8th amendment objection that should be cruel or unusual.
