A more visible and Strategic Police presence is a deterrent to crime and it has a positive impact on a community. Now she comes out and says we are confusing safe communities with hiring more cops. I actually read it at the crime and serve alongside her as i do on the Judiciary Committee to understand some of the nuances and some of the wisdom in positions on civil liberties, civil rights and policing. She was an executive, elected statewide three times in our most populous state where as attorney general she supervised 7,000 attorneys and she has governing experience. As someone in her elected roles both in San Francisco and statewide in california who was close to and had responsibility for Law Enforcement and policing, she understands how to make our community safer, but how to do it in a way that promotes justice. I think thats a great compliment to joe bidens long record fighting for stronger but more effective. Trace she says im californias top cop and she is a big supporter of the police. Called herself the top cop and now she is saying you dont necessarily need more police. It is a change. Some are saying the whole idea that maybe she is placating social groups. An example of that is you said you worked with her. You came out with the senates version of the justice in policing act called for the d. O. J. To be investigate and more thorough in investigating Police Departments and the abuses there. In 2015 the Obama Administration invested the Michael Brown shooting in ferguson, missouri and found it was justified. Kamala harris continues to say that Michael Brown was murdered and she knows Michael Brown was not murdered and the Justice Department found it was justified. Some are accusing her of saying it is nothing more than placating the social groups. Your response to that, sir. Sandra the element of the bill you just referred to that i cosponsored would allow the department of justice in exceptional cases to actually investigate Police Departments that have long records of police abuse. There are about 19,000 i believe Police Departments in the United States, about 3 million Law Enforcement officers. In the second term of the Obama Biden Administration there are a dozen pattern and practice investigations. These are tools used against just those departments that have striking records and it does in critical cases allow for consent decrees to be entered into like minneapolis or new orleans, a long pattern and practice. I do think its an appropriate tool for the federal government to have. Trace saying Michael Brown was murdered when she knows the department of justice ruled it was justified. Trace, i have not heard her say that and frankly i would be happy to come back on and speak to what i can find about her record on this issue. The larger point is that she has been both a forceful advocate for policing and for more just and appropriate policing. I think she understands how to strike the right balance between the understandable outrage of not just africanamericans but people will after backgrounds in our country over unjustified police killing. Something ive heard from democrats and republicans in the senate after the brutal killing of george floyd. She also understands how to avoid the temptations of overreach in this direction. She was for medicare for all before she was against it. I think she is a reasonably safe choice. She was the obvious frontrunner, the obvious choice. She adds excitement to the ticket and a statement to africanamericans and especially to africanamerican women who are the real solid core of the Democratic Party that the party does not take them for granted. And so i think she is a pretty safe choice and will energize some women, energize some africanamericans. Most importantly, its a cliche but true what people always say about the Vice President ial pick is first do no harm. At least at first. When you do dig through her stance on the issues, when she was running her campaign, some say her views evolved, some say they changed and some say she flipflopped on some issues when it comes to healthcare, chris. She was pressed on that very issue on an interview this morning on the today show with she wasnt pressed. Susan rice was on the short list was pressed on that issue and here is how she reacted. One of the issues for her in the campaign was that she was kind of all over the place on the major issues of the day. Savannah, i dont think thats a wellplaced criticism. She has been she has a track record, she has a voting record and been quite clear. She will be on this ticket in support of joe biden. It is not her who is top of the ticket. They are a team. You know, think if it had been Elizabeth Warren and there would have been all this talk far left, she is for medicare for all. There has been a long and not particularly proud history of people who attack the frontrunner when they ran against them and end up on the ticket and they have to do a little explaining. We can stop and applaud when history is made in our fragile young democracy and we can also call into question why perhaps somebody should not be the Vice President or the president of the United States. It is four years ago today that President Trump asked me in a private conversation to be his campaign manager. We had a lengthy conversation running against a woman. There were majority of women in the electorate last time and yet they voted for donald trump or Hillary Clinton. He became the president. So i think this notion that men and women vote for men and women. What they usually say we asked the question would you refer to vote for a woman or man . Gender had a slight preference for their own gender. The number one answer was it depends on other things. I think in the case of Kamala Harris it will be easy to say somebody who seems and who presents as progressive and forwardlooking to bring your nation backward on many things that matter to america. So by way of quick example. Backward on all the economic gains we had. She would raise the Corporate Tax rate from 21 to 35 . They would do away with all the gains weve had as a nation through our Paycheck Protection Program and jobs cuts and tax act. Why is that important . Also i think as attorney general in california, the position that Kamala Harris has held much longer than she has been a United States senator. Looks like she left nobody happy. She is seen by those in the far left many speaking up last night as not sufficiently for criminal justice reform. Locked up over 1500 people on marijuana charges and by others who are for Public Safety and law and order she is seen as somebody soft on some of those criminals. I think she has a very mixed record that people will dig into. If you cant say women are aggressive and all the things said about women close to this president and Vice President these are tough jobs and we should look at that at the qualifications for the job. Terrible on criminal justice the democrats rejected her. She pulled out of the race before a single vote was cast. But where the states elected a republican statewide for senator and governor during the biden obama years.
