conventional. chris christie, newt gingrich, might not be the veep but they could change the speakers if they want. yesterday, busy day in the city of indianapolis. donald trump was running through the finalists. he met with newt gingrich, he also met with jeff sessions who we believe came with him here to beverly hills. he met with governor mike pence in indiana. most of the family went to the governor's mansion yesterday to have breakfast. after that meeting donald trump sat down for an exclusive interview with our bret baier to talk about the number of people the list is down to. listen to this exchange. >> i tell you, chris christie is somebody i've liked a long time. he's a total professional, he's a good guy, by the way, a lot of people don't understand that. but i'm narrowing it down. i'm at three, potentially four, in my own mind i probably am thinking about two. >> possibly down to two people at this point. those people are believed to be
newt gingrich and indiana governor mike pence. went through a public auditioning process. pence joined him on the stump tuesday night. chris christie out on the stump as well. after the meeting yesterday morning, mike pence talked to the media about what it was like to be considered for trump's running mate. >> he's giving it careful consideration. and we're humbled to be part of that. there's a number of other noteworthy americans they're considering. and i'm just honored to be on that list. >> so donald trump taking today to make up his mind as to who it's going to be. newt gingrich said yesterday even donald trump doesn't know which one of us it's going to be. back to the speakers list, i know peter doocy will be talking more about that in just a minute. on the list of speakers saying this impressive lineup of veterans political leaders and
those who know donald trump the best. represents a cross section of real people facing the same challenges of every american household. we're winding up to the republican convention, an exciting day in the next 36 hours for the trump campaign with the big announcement tomorrow morning, 11:00 in new york city as to who the running mate will be. >> all right. john roberts, live at the will rogers memorialark there on sunset boulevard where we did google. we know what you're talking about now. all right. 11:00 tomorrow we'll know officially. you hear donald trump talk, he's got it down to two. >> right. >> who are the two? the conventional wisdom is because he had a two our breakfast or something like that yesterday with mike pence in indiana and had his whole family there people are going maybe it's mike pence. the reason they did that was there was a mechanical problem with the jet. so they had to remain in indianapolis longer than they thought.
they were supposed to proceed on to california. so the conventional wisdom is it's mike pence and newt gingrich. we're also talking about donald trump who is a showman and could have a surprise. >> right. there's room for another name, you never know. these have been notoriously secret processes. this is a guy who knows how to drum in interest. newt gingrich had a chance to react to a potential trump gingrich list. this is what he had to say. >> i don't know if i should say this, it's so much fun i'm going to. look, in many ways donald trump is like a pirate. he's outside the normal system. he gets things done, he's bold. he's actually like a figure out of a movie. in a a lot of ways my entire career has been like a pirate. i've taken on the establishment of both parties. i've been prepared to fight the media. do you really want a two pirate ticket? >> let's talk about it. >> i love the way he sets that
up. i probably shouldn't say it. >> who do you think it's going to be? >> the conventional wisdom of those two, if those are the two, you know, mike pence is a solid legislator. got a good record. he excites the conservative base. newt gingrich has been a surrogate for donald trump for a while. he's an exciting pirate politician as he just said right there. people like him, too, so maybe it's newt. >> i feel much the some way. pence has a conservative record. has had to be pragmatic in indiana i would love to see a pirate ticket. hillary clinton is trying to check a lot of boxes and check in the polls. if you had two guys who go with their gut on it it would be a very -- >> i'm going with pence. >> good. >> he's conservative, he has experience in congress, 12 years of experience there. he's a governor, he's a
christian, he endorses ted cruz a lot of people liked that. he can attract the far right. >> he started out as a radio talk show host. >> right. and he was very humble. this is what he said when he was talking about being a vice presidential contender. he said i'm feeling humbled. i'm running for the governor of indiana and this happens. there are a number of noteworthy americans that they're considering and i'm honored to be on the list. i like that. >> meanwhile let's switch gears, she has been known as notorious rbg. ruth bader ginsberg. she's on the cover of the "new york post" because she has crossed an ethical line many people feel. when talking -- given a couple of interviews over the last couple of days. she said if donald trump is elec elected she might have to move to new zealand. he's a faker.
the "new york post" says she he out of her mind. >> three interviews which is rare for a supreme court justice. it's been seen as bad form for anyone on the highest court to express a political opinion because they deal with contentious issues. we've seen it as a non-partisan body interrupting the constitution. >> they're the judges they've got to be neutral. >> donald trump fired back of course, listen to this. >> she's a disgrace to the supreme court. for her to politicize the supreme court, and this is all the more reason why i hope i win. because i've got 11 justices that are absolutely incredible justices, highly respected by all, including liberal people, frankly. >> tell us what you think, do you think of this as fair? should the justice tell you who she's support. >> a lot of people point to the supreme court wng to have? >> who appointed her to the

message of unification, are you ready to stand with her. >> no, because it's untruthful. the reality is hillary clinton has been divisive whether it's turning to the divisiveness on race in the wake of the dallas shootings and the murders as well as the deaths in minnesota and louisiana. or it's her turn to gun control and immediately politicizing tragedy. she's been very divisive. i think it's smart for donald trump to project himself as a candidate of law and order. there's a lot of americans across the country that are concerned about the unrest, concerned about the violence. it cuts to the heart of hillary clinton's lawlessness of her e-mail server. 56% of americans thought the fbi should have brought charges, you have a big problem. >> given the fact you look at the polls that have come out, she feels she's way too close to donald trump. she needs to bernie people, the bernie people aren't sold on her. that's the unity she's talking about, right? >> listen, she had the worst
week ever last week. there is still tied within the margin of error in swing states. it will only get better for here. >> for whom? >> hillary clinton. as they go into the debates the division will be apparently between donald trump and hillary clinton. >> don't you think during the debates donald trump is going to hammer her about the corruption and e-mail thing. she has said -- >> that's the problem. for democrats it doesn't matter. for independents it's not polling well. the problem here is that donald trump has not only divided the republican party, but he's divided the country. and he uses really hateful rhetoric to divide so that he can ignite his base. and hillary clinton right now is trying to bring in sanders supporters, has 85% already without even trying. and she's pulling with independents, and republicans. >> i have not seen that 85% number. lisa, isn't it true, though, that the problem with the e-mail server, that is something that

wow. that is a massive explosion. people screaming and running away as debris comes crashing back to the ground. what goes up must come down from the blast. it happened in tajikistan. at least one person was killed unfortunatel unfortunately. earlier this week 33 people collapsed in new york at the same time. after smoking a bad batch of synthetic marijuana known as k-2. this isn't just a problem in big cities, it's a problem sweeping across america. in 2009, there were 14 calls made to poison control about this drug called k-2. just last year, that number skyrocketed to nearly 8,000. so what is k-2 and just how dangerous is it? here with some answers, fox news medical team, dr. marc siegel. what is k-2? >> it is not marijuana.
the biggest problem is when we call it synthetic marijuana we're already sending the wrong information. you know what? it mimics the same receptors in the brain as marijuana. guess what it's usually up to a 100 times more powerful. 100 times. so this is not the same drug at all. it's also made in a chemist's lab which means they can change the formula and the state can't ban it. versions of this are legal in every state of the union. listen to the side effects. no sense of pain sensation, you can bang into things, vomiting paralysis, cramps, kidney failure stroke heart attack and death. people have died. this is extremely dangerous. kids put it on marijuana or some plant smoke it. they don't know what they're getting into. >> when i was down for spring break doing an investigative
report what the kids are taking. the cops were taking me that kids were taking synthetic drugs, the chemists changed it and they're legal. they are taking drugs that are synthetically changed and it's not illegal. >> when the state makes an old version illegal, the drug dealers make a new version. senator jeff klein here in new york is trying to get law passed and got it passed in the senate but not the assembly. anything that mimics a controlled substance has got to be illegal. any chemical has got to be illegal that does that. that's hugely important. you said almost 8,000 calls to poison centers last year, kids are struggling. they end up in the hospital, having trouble breathing and they end up dying. >> kids are just buying it on the street? what do parents need to know. >> that's the first thing parents need to know. your kids could buy it on the street. number one it's not marijuana,
it's so much more powerful than marijuana. you could end with current kidney failure, usually i don't people, this time i want to scare people. it should not be on the streets. >> is it a pill or is it a weed, what is it? >> most of the time it's something you spray on to something that you're smoking or it can be put in tea. those are the most common ways it's being used as a spray or as part of tea. not a pill. and, again, there are herbal shops selling this it is rampant. >> for the people who are watching who have taken it, what's your message? >> get to see a physician, a hospital. we can save you. we can watch you if you need dialysis we can give you. i can save 99% of the who take this. if you're on the streets i can't help you. get medical attention if you've taken this. get these laws passed.

the va released a report detailing veteran suicide. they say it hasn't gotten as much worse. things are not looking up at all. >> it hasn't gotten much worse is not much of an improvement. everyone wants to help the vets and say it's a bipartisan issue, which it is. people want to do well by them. there are different view and visions on how to do that. here's what donald trump had to say as part of his speech about the oing to play the clip and have you react. >> sure. >> veterans should be guaranteed the right to choose their doctor and clinics. whether at a va facility or at a private medical center. >> so trump accuses hillary clinton of being secondary of the status quo who wants to double down on the va system. he wants to give veterans a choice. >> when you listen to the sound bite from hillary clinton the thing i listen more so is wide spread. she uses a term called satisfied. that's a metric the va likes to focus on. a satisfied veteran is one that
gets pain killers every month or check in a mail. that's not a treated or cured veteran. the things donald trump is talking about, that's coming from representative jeff miller who has been the chairman of the veterans affairs committee for a decade. he's been a strong advocate -- like most people, especially conservatives that focus on policy looking at trump, most are looking at who is advising him on an issue, more so than is he going to generate the right ideas. chairman miller is the right person to advise, you know, candidate trump. but also know that sherman miller is not shy on cutting spending on certain places in order to amplify productivity in others. it will be an interesting time until november. hillary clinton's comment shows you can't fix a problem if you're not willing to acknowledge a problem exists. >> if you won't acknowledge the

elected, she's moving to new zealand, she calls him faker. he's really got an ego. there's supposed to be a separation between the branches. has she crossed it? >> i think she did. i think what she did was unethical. when this republic began, we had courts filled with political hacks. either federalists or jeffersonians and we turned the corner and we adopted an apolitical, a neutral bench. it was one of the most important reforms that we have had. the supreme court justices have largely adhered to that. it's sort of a touch stone of their service. she really -- she put that principle over to the side can the comments. what people don't realize is that the supreme court claims to be above essentially the code of ethics, that they believe the code of ethics applies to lesser judges so the supreme court is the only part of our government that claims not to have an
enforceable code of ethics. something that many of us feel is very problematic. >> if we have another problem like -- or another situation like the bush/gore situation, according to "the new york post" there's a legal ethics professor from nyu who wrote this. a federal law requires all federal judges including the justices to recuse themselves if their impartiality might be questioned. would she have to recuse herself if we had another situation like that? >> i think there's a strong argument for recusal in the situation. these interviews were really over the top and when i say that, i should say that most justices would never have even considered making statements of this kind. with regard to any candidate. and the problem i think that you have is that when you say that you're immune from the ethics code, you develop this -- this separation from other judges. and for many people it makes it look like you were anointed, not appointed. that is not what we want. >> jonathan, this wasn't a slip
of the tongue. this was three interviews. why is she doing this now? it's not often that justices speak out let alone in this way multiple times. what's the rationale? >> it was not a slip of the tongue. you know, sandra day o'connor did have blurted out something that was considered political during the election with bush and gore. alito had a moment in the state of the union where he was frankly unguarded and unwise. but this happens to be something far more serious. these are three interviews and ruth bader ginsburg is aware of canon 5 that apply to other judges and this canon says you're not allowed to make statements opposing or supporting political candidates for office. >> you mentioned sam alito who made a comment during the state of the union. it was barack obama who was taking a shot at the supreme court regarding citizens united so the president of the united
states made attacking the supreme court okay. now does that open the floodgates? >> well, i was actually very critical of justice alita, despite what the president said. i felt he was wrong to make those gestures, indicate his oppositi oppositi opposition. but what justice ginsberg has done is far more egregious. we have to look at the supreme court and whether congress needs to step in to impose a code of ethics on this court. you know, a majority of justices on this court have been accused of ethical violations. >> interesting stuff. all right. >> she know spots are opening up and like steve reminded us earlier she was appointed by bill clinton. >> you might say she has been extremely careless. >> professor, thank you. >> i just got that. let's hand it over to abby who has some headlines for us. >> i understand. good morning, always good to be with you. we have some headlines to get to. fbi agents sworn to secrecy and

us, and going to get started in an hour. maria molina tells us what kind of a day we have all across the country. >> well, unfortunately here across the northeast we have a chance for some thunderstorms. it's warm and muggy. a lot of humidity in place out here. there will be a front that's going to be swinging through the region, bringing in that chance for showers and storms and even potentially some severe weather. not only in the northeast, but even as we head farther west across portions of the central plains. there's a chance for some large hail, damaging winds, even an isolated tornado. the problem across portions of the plains is that you're expecting days of storms. out there, there's a threat for some flash flooding as well. the ground will be saturated with days of rain and the potential for an additional severe weather as we head into tomorrow. temperatures, we mentioned they're warm across portions of the northeast. in the southeast, they're darn right just hot. 98 in raleigh and across parts of the plains. into the triple digits in dallas and dell rio. the heat index values will be

hour is a starvation wage. sorry, donald, if you're watching, -- [ cheers and applause ] -- we're not cutting the minimum wage. we're raising the minimum wage. >> so you can see there, there were democrats off the charts. there was times we couldn't see that line, a-plus. so she's rallying the democrats behind her, and that's really important. you can see the independents and republicans were not necessarily behind her. even though she was talking about something that was important to independents that people get better wages. they gave her a c-minus and republicans a "d." not the best moment for hillary with the independents. again, that's what we need to be watching. >> let's talk about the vice president list. one of the names on that short list is lieutenant general michael flynn.
let's listen to him from this week. >> i think i bring a lot of discipline, i think i bring a focus. i think i bring a knowledge of the world. what's going on around the world certainly on the foreign policy side. national security. i think what's happening in the homeland is unbelievable. the ideas about, you know, what donald trump has said about immigration i think are very true. i mean, we have to get this country back in order. >> that was interesting. >> it's really interesting. you can see at the beginning part of the message that's the first time we saw democrats and republicans agree. until he talked about immigration. the democrats took a nosedive there. independents a c-plus. a democrats a c-minus. but to see them come together in that way is a really interesting and compelling story. the other thing that's really interesting he didn't have the intensity of support on the other hand. it wasn't so high as we saw with other people. again, not the lows that we have

president will be. >> that's right. john roberts is live in the beautiful beverly hills, california, with the details. >> reporter: good morning to you, pete, ainsley and steve. we have breaking news, we are learning about the lineup of speakers at next week's republican national committee convention. in cleveland. this was the list that we thought was going to be out earlier in the week or late last week, but they have it nailed down now. although, a person who appears -- does not appear on the partial list, put them up and look at the speakers here. tim tebow he's currently on a mission in the philippines. he was not on the partial list, but i have it on good authority he'll be there. and marcus luttrell who is a big perry supporter will be there. and lieutenant michael flynn, on the short list for vice presidential running mate and dana white, president of the ultimate fighting championship and patricia smith, the father of sean smith, one of the brave
americans killed in benghazi in 2012. we know on that list are people who are potentially going to be donald trump's running mate newt gingrich, chris christie, jeff sessions. they are all speaking at the convention as well. not to say that they couldn't be taken off the list if they become the running mate but likely at this point, if you read the tea leaves they're not the running mate because they're listed as a speaker. and trump with the full list, mike pence and newt gingrich was there, jeff sessions was there yesterday as well. immediately after he had breakfast with his family at -- at governor mike pence's mansion north of indianapolis, donald trump sat down with bret baier and said how he's narrowing the choices. he has it down to a list of few people, probably gingrich and pence being the front-runners. >> i'll tell you that chris christie is someone i have liked for a long time. he's a good guy. people don't understand that. but i'm narrowing it down.
i mean, i'm at three, potentially four. but in my own mind i probably am thinking about two. >> in his own mind he has it down to two. we believe that's newt gingrich and mike pence. trump has a full day of fund-raisers today in los angeles and then tomorrow morning at 11:00 in manhattan, we don't know the location yet, he'll announce who will be his running mate and then the quick ride into the convention next week. pete, steve, ainsley? >> a lot going on. john roberts, thank you very much. if it has anything to do with money it looks like it's a possibility it's newt. i'll tell you why. sheldon adelson from out in las vegas, he reportedly told trump i like newt. so a lot of people are saying if trump is saying it's down to two, the two must be newt and mike pence. because he spent all that time with mike pence. the reason he spent so much time with pence yesterday is because his airplane had mechanical
problems in indianapolis. >> yeah. >> so he spent a little more time there. >> lucky for mike pence. but donald trump said, no one can boss me around and use money to get me to change my mind because i funded my own campaign. >> there you go. >> it's interesting. if you want to open it up for a candid conversation, newt gingrich will always have that. he was on the channel last evening and he was talking candidly about a trump-gingrich ticket. >> i don't know if i should say this, but many ways, donald trump is like a pirate. he gets things done, he's bold. he's a figure out of a movie. a lot of my career has been like a pirate. i have been prepared to fight in the media. one of the questions -- do you want a two pirate ticket? >> they're a lot alike.
that's why i think it's going to be pence. we took a better earlier. they're going to make me breakfast in i'm correct. >> you're going to make us breakfast if we're correct. >> i love the sound bite in him, when he was talking about being on the list. he said i'm feeling humbled, i'm running for governor of indiana and this happens. i'm honored to be on that list. he has been in congress for 12 years. he was -- he's the governor of the great state. he's endorsed cruz. he's been married for a long time, has three kids. >> but then again if you made the argument for newt, who has the sheldon adelson vote behind him, if trump wants a d.c. insider which he said he does, who's gotten something done in congress, he was a speaker. he had that contract for america. and he is a good guy in front of a hostile press, newt gingrich -- >> he's so smart. >> newt still has the outsider feel.

zealand. said he's a faker and a also has no consistency about him. he says whatever comes into his head at the moment. which caused donald trump who was essentially endorsed by "the new york times" yesterday in the editorial, they said donald trump is right. he should fire at her because she's crossed the line. here's the donald. >> she's a disgrace to the supreme court. for her to politicize the supreme court and this is all the more reason why i hope i win, because i've got 11 justices that are absolutely incredible justices. highly respected by all. including liberal people, frankly. >> so donald trump's got a problem with this. "the new york times" editorial page has a problem with this. >> "washington post." >> "washington post" has a problem with this. >> hillary clinton aide. >> hillary clinton aide. then earlier on the show on "fox & friends," jonathan turley at gw law school who is left of center as well had this to say about what the justice said about donald trump. >> i think what she did was basically unethical.
i think there's a strong argument for recusal in that situation. i mean, these interviews were really over the top. and when i say that, i should say that most justices would never have even considered making statements of this kind. when you say you're immune from the ethics code, you develop this separation from other judges and for many people it makes it look like you were anointed, not appointed. >> recusal there. just to remind you, do you remember when bush and gore, the supreme court had to decide that election? that's why i'm saying she would by law have to recuse herself if it came down to that again. >> but would she? would she? >> probably not. >> but she does take naps during the state of the union this. >> there you go. >> it's ten minutes after the top of the hour. she's not recused herself from the headlines, abby. >> i'm not. although i'm craving that

so the race to the white house, several battleground states now showing their colors who people are picking. >> brand-new fox news polls have hillary clinton ahead of trump by seven points in the state of virginia and then ten points in the state of colorado. >> but there may be more to this picture. anna kooiman breaks it down right now. >> great to see you. good morning to all of you at home. well, the real battleground may largely be with independent voters with a lot of uncertainty really does still exist. if you look at the votes by party identification, both candidates stay strong along their party lines but notice trump has a 11 point lead with independents. 11% of those are still undecided and 16% say they will vote for another candidate or not at all. those same voters believe trump has a better handle than clinton on most hot button issues. he topped her by at least two points in every category when asked who could better fix the
economy, do something about illegal immigration, rein in government spending and also help fight terrorism. well, overall when it comes to taking the country in the new direction, trump has a massive 13 point lead over clinton in virginia. and trump's appeal is down though, 55% said clinton has better temperament. exactly half also say she's more qualified. 43% believe she's a strong leader and 40% say she cares about them as individuals. now, despite donald trump's poor numbers when those voters were asked who they found the most honest and trustworthy out of the two of them, hillary clinton was beaten by donald trump 28 to 27. now, let's go back to virginia. the number one concern remains the u.s. economy, so donald trump is hoping to use his record as a businessman to try to court the independent voters there. but the big thing is making sure
that the voters are motivated to come out on election day. because a lot of people are saying i don't like this candidate, i don't like either candidate, maybe i'll stay home. >> there could be some good news for donald trump in the quinnipiac poll that shows some races in florida, because marco rubio is over patrick murphy. if you vote for rubio you'll probably vote for trump. in ohio, 47 to 50 and in pennsylvania, pat toomey over the democrat, 49-39. >> a lot of numbers we're breaking down for everybody. this comes after a bad week for hillary clinton, and donald trump is very measured in his speeches he's giving with his teleprompter. >> no kidding. is your police department prepared for an attack like the one in dallas? you will hear from some cops who say no and they're begging to carry they personal weapons. then they sacrificed life and limb to protect our freedoms. and this morning they're hitting

range. seven people murdered outside of their homes in eight separate shootings. the youngest victim is 12 years old. a heart pounding police chase winding its way through the streets of los angeles. a carjacking suspect swerves in and out of cars, makeling his tires. they surround him outside the casino for a dramatic take-down. pete? >> thanks, anxioinsley. a number of cops feel they're not equipped for an attack. and in a letter to the chief of police, the fraternal order of police asks that officers carry rifles to protect themselves and our citizens. but the police chief does not believe this measure would be necessary. here to react the officer who wrote that letter, john george, president of the oklahoma city fraternal order of police. so john, thanks for joining us this morning. your concern is that were an attack like dallas to happen in
oklahoma city or elsewhere, you think local police departments are just not prepared to repel it? >> yes, sir, correct. i'm advocating that our officers be properly equipped and trained for their officer safety and for the citizens safety here. >> do you think part of the underequipped -- the argument you're making prior to dallas, there was a big debate and argument about the overmilitarization of police. they were too heavily armed. looked like combat troops. do you not believe that argument or do you think that's led to your argument that they're underequipped. >> well i may that be the case in some instances. we're not asking that officers carry rifles to routine calls but they have access when that's an active shooter incident. they need them in the vehicles to protect innocent lives. >> you're not saying that they need to carry ar-15 rifles on their everyday patrols but have access to it. as a military member to myself
there was a desire in iraq and in afghanistan for soldiers to sometimes bring their own personal weapon but the military had understandable concerns about that as far as maintenance or training. how would you ensure that an officer bringing their own personal weapon with maintaining it properly or knew how to operate it properly? >> we already do that in oklahoma city. most of our officers carry their personal handgun. you have to buy one that's approved and go through the training at our department with it. we do that with shotguns. buying an approved rifle like the rifle that the department issues shouldn't be an issue as long as you can go to the school and qualify with it. you ought to be allowed to carry that as well. >> there are 200 rifles in the department for 500 patrolmen. is it a funding issue? why wouldn't they want one for one in vehicles if they could? >> to me, i don't know the reason you wouldn't want them to end the active shooter situation. they're willing to purchase
their own rifle and ammo and go through the school. the response is overwhelming from the officers. they'll do whatever it takes to carry the rifles. >> it's not just in an age of where we have seen violence over protests and police shootings, but we live in the age of isis and whether inspired or motivated terrorists, you have to be prepared for anything at any time. any sense on how this standoff will resolve itself between you and the police chief? do you think more rifles are on the way eventually? >> well, i hope so. i think he's putting a plan in place to get supervisors rifles but they're not the first ones to the call. they may be the last ones at the call. we need it with every patrol office. not just rifles but we need ballistic shields. we need the shields to protect the officers as well. >> yeah. john george, thank you very much. unfortunately the streets of our cities look more like a war zone. and we want the good guys to be prepared for it. thank you. speaking of the dallas shooting did you see what white house correspond end kevin corke asked? >> has there been any

well, the outrage is growing this morning, did new york's governor governor cuomo allow people to drink toxic water for months? >> it looks safe there, but
people are fearing the worse and now congress is stepping in to investigate new york's water. >> brian innis has more. >> people in the small town are furious and some are sick. they said that the state allowed them to drink contaminated water for over a year before taking action. >> i got to get a call first thing this morning from my doctor saying there are two nodules on my thyroid. >> the term better safe than sorry should have applied here. if they even thought there was an issue with the water. they should have told us right then and there, stop drinking it. >> these children could have had 18 months less of toxins in their body if we were told in advance. >> reporter: the chemical is called pfoa and the average resident had it 11 times higher than the average american. studies have linked it to
several illnesses including kidney cancer and thyroid disease. it's believed to have come from a local plastics plant and town officials said they alerted the state that their drinking water tested dangerously high in november of 2014. the state contacted the epa. over the course of over a year conducted tests while assuring the public the water was safe to drink. turns out it wasn't. the epa issued a do not drink order in november and december of 2015. the house committee on oversight and government reform is now investigating governor andrew cuomo's administration, accusing them of a sluggish response. he says that he believes the state acted appropriately, blaming the epa for failing to provide proper guidance to states given that pfoa is an unregulated chemical. >> but they're wrong about the sluggish response. we need the epa to do their job better. we will test water to what -- for whatever chemicals the epa says.
we will test it to whatever the allowable levels are that the epa set. but they have to do their job. >> the state installed water filtration systems in january and declared the water safe, still some residents don't trust it. >> okay so the governor is taking shots at the epa. what does the epa have to say? >> well, the epa says they took strong action to protect the city and it had higher levels than what the health advisories clearly state are safe. in this case, they have lowered the levels allowable nationwide by 80%. massive amount. what's important here though is that the time line, the governor's office says they contacted the state epa in 2014. and the epa said they acted swiftly almost a year later in october of 2015. time matters here, guys. that's what congress is investigating. if the state and/or the epa knew there were elevated levels of pfoa why were people allowed to
