I have been very interested to get your take on the events of the day. You studied this in 2002. Long before President Trump or president obama. You noticed something a movement growing what did you see and why did it come about . Well, first of all, what started me on the research in early 2,000, there was some high profile hate crimes where people went out and they were killing people of different races and that was very alarming. And i commissioned interviews of 10 individuals who represented a wide spectrum of White Nationalism. And what i came out with, i called it the new White Nationalism because there was a new white leader that was well educated, very articulate, who was espoused in racial violence or using racial epitaphs, but they were using the language of multiculturallism and identity politics to argue that white was like any other group and that white people were being discriminated against and that white people needed spokes persons. And i knew that they had the potential to expand because they were addressing issues that i think a lot of americans cared about but mainstream politicians were egg poring. And so this is very different from the old style white supremacist, associated with the kkk and the neo nazis. And what i think happened in charlottesville is that you had the extreme right, the neo nazis, the chance people, but you also had some of the newer types who call themselves the at right. These are intellectuals who are using data. Fbi statistics and science to support their argument and they say that they are white nationalists that care about white people as opposed to White Supremacists who would say that white people are superior to blacks and jews and other groups. Pete professor, thats really interesting research. Obviously james alec fields who mowed down protesters and support for nazis is a racist. In your studies when you talk about the at right and talk about those that may have had grievances that they perceived. Would you describe them as universally racist as well . Here is what i would say, is that with the guy that mowed down the protesters, that he clearly was very angry. I dont know if he went to the rally with that purpose. But clearly he acted in a way that created violence. My understanding of the alt right is that they are making the case that if black people have interests and hispanics have interests, that white people have interests, too. And they are making an argument around civil rights that i believe resonates with a wider population. And i called it the new White Nationalism to distinguish it from most our White Supremacy. I believe part of the solution is to open up dialogue and listen to what people are saying because, by shutting down dialogue we are making it so that like minded people are only talking with each other. And just coming out and denouncing whited supremacy and painting everyone with the same broad brush does not solve the problem. There are black nationalists. There are white nationalists. There are hispanic nationalists. So we cant say its just one group. So the president was correct when he said that there were many morse forces involved. Had the counter protesters not been there, maybe the entire rally would have ended differently. And these are people who are aggrieved over affirmative action, immigration, minority crime, and just what they sees a discrimination against white people. If we want to come together, we need to move away from identity politics and multiculturallism and focus on the American National identity. Thats the only way were going to be able to get beyond. He wants to see more people, for example, come from england and australia and fewer come from, lets say, for example, from indiana. Trump has never said that on the other side of the aisle. Hate speech is protected speech. Political speech is protected. Even when its hateful. But, the violence is not. And i would also look into the violence and see why and how the police were given whatever orders to, as the aclu of virginia tweeted out, not get involved in the clash when it began to happen. Pete yeah, also legal to riot and loot as happened in 1992 which for some reason max seen watters then thought was acceptable. It seems to me to be quite a double standard. Yeah. There is not only a double standard. There is a failure to set standards for behavior. Had there been peaceful counter protests by concerned citizens. And there were concerned citizens there in charlottesville, they stand like we all do against the neo nazis, the white nationalists. Had it been peaceful. This would have been a different event. There may not have even been a white house response at that point because the white nationalists would have marched. They would have gone on their way, unless they started something. But, this didnt begin on its own. It began and continued on both sides. It should be condemned. It has been condemned. But now lets make sure that it doesnt happen again by having proper policing. The driver who plowed his car through the crowd killing a woman and injuring many others is expected to be arraigned at a District Court just behind me charged with seconddegree murder. We have a warning of strong video to show you of that incident. Police identified the driver as james field jr. He plowed his car through a crowd of people. The streets were flooded with a mix of White Supremacy groups and counter protesters at the time. Vice president pence now saying he and the president condemn the bigotry and violence here this weekend. We have no tolerance for hate and violence White Supremacists, neonazis, or the kkk. These dangerous groups have no place in American Public lives and in the american debate. We condemn them in the strongest possible terms. There was a vigil here last night and in other cities around the country in remembrance of 32yearold heather and also two Virginia State troopers were killed where their chopper went down assisting law enforcement. Its not clear whether they will appear in the courthouse behind us. And he could be charged with domestic terrorism and federal investigators are looking into the possibility that he had some type of assistance when he plowed his car into the crowds here in charlottesville this weekend. Somehow said that is way too vague, mr. President. You have to be more specific, and he did just that. When the president come out for what it was, he may very well do that today. But in their minds, a lot of them, they can say we associate the president with these groups. Coming out and denouncing White Supremacy and painting him with the same broad brush does not solve the problem. There are black nationalists, white nationalists, spanish nationalists, so we cant say one group. So the president was correct when he said there were many forces involved. If we want to come together, we need to move away from identity politics and multiculturism and focus on the American National identity. Thats the only way were going to be able to get beyond this. A top official of the new York City Police department was asked if what happened down in charlottesville happened in new york city, and they said, no, it could not have happened in new york because the new York City Police department keeps rival protesters far from each other. And that has been one of the rap against police down in charlottesville is apparently they have met with the organizer ahead of time and the organizer said said that they, the Police Officer let it get out of hand. Thats going to be part of the investigation. Abby yeah, and a wakeup call for the rest of the country as there are concerns that more of these protests and potential violence could happen. A wakeup call. Brian we read about seattle at the beginning of this block. They were kept separate in seattle because of the right of peaceful assembly. And for whatever reason, the Police Department didnt keep them separate. Not to point fingers, but he praise the police in every single instance. Abby you mention the press conference with the president later on this afternoon. Of course, this will be talked about what happened in charlottesville. But also whats going on with north korea because that is the top of so many peoples minds this morning. North korea recalling key ambassadors around the world as tension with the u. S. Continue to rise and the president continues to put pressure not just on north korea but very much so on china who is responsible for keeping north korea afloat, especially when it comes to their economy. Pete ambassador of north korea supposedly has un, china, and russia, theyve been called home and as you mentioned, posting a lot on china trade. Wendy, its really good to have you with us, and, you know, we were saying during commercial break, it happened ten years ago. But it still feels like yesterday. I still miss him as much as the first day. I really do. Abby and you talk about the role of a soldiers wife. And every time he would leave, your heart would ache. It did. It sure did. And i ache for him now. But, yeah, i never fully i mean, i didnt always know what he was doing when he was gone, and i missed him terribly, and its hard for a soldiers wife to hold the fort down for him until they got back home. Plus, worrying about their safety, you know . And but you just have to be strong and support them. They need to know that they have that support at home. And that allows them to do their job and not be distracted. Abby and there was one day that he didnt come home. In 2007 where his blackhawk helicopter, he crashed. And you were told that devastating news. Your life changed forever. It did. It did. Abby what was the hardest part about that moment for you . The hardest part was telling my children. I did not want to do that, and i remember i called them downstairs, and they both sat on the couch. And as i went down on my knees, and i said god, how much more do i have to do . And i remember my daughter said is it bad . And i said yes, and they both looked at me, and they said is he okay . And i said no, he died. And just the wailing that came from them was horrific. And i think i felt myself leave at that moment. The old wendy was gone. That was the hardest part. Still the hardest part of this journey was having to tell them. Abby your beautiful family we can see on the screen there. Your little girl and their dad. And they will always remember them as being a hero to them. And we talk so much about our military and veterans and just all the Amazing Things that theyre doing to this country. But often that gets lost is the family. And the spouse and the role that they play. Yes. Abby and supporting them and holding down the fort and also just being strong. Where do you find that strength . God. He is the only reason that i got through this whole thing. And there was a moment when i just had to complete surrender to him and this was after michael passed, and i just gave everything over to him, and he took care of me. I have two brothers that are about to go out and do their missions, and my brothers wife. Hes a pilot in the navy. She just texted me and said they just had a baby boy. She said theyre going to leave me for nine months. Im already trying to emotionally get prepared for this. What message do you have for her and so many others that are about to go through this journey . Just be patient. And just be very supportive to your spouse. Let them know that everything is okay at home, and then that way theyre not distracted on whatever mission that they have. That helps them to focus and to get home sooner. They voted for the sanctions in the United Nations a week or so ago. But the president says an issue of trade is a separate issue. Yet, at the same time the administration wants to continue pressuring china to lean on north korea. Let me give you context to all of this right now. As you mention, trade and specifically trade with china is going to be a key item on the agenda today. And just a short time ago, at 6 54 this morning, the president tweeted out the following. The obstructionist democrats have given us or not fixed some of the world trade deals in world history. I am changing that fast. So whats going to happen later today, President Trump expected to fly to washington to sign paperwork, specifically a document called an executive memorandum that will authorize an investigation into how china treats u. S. Companies that are doing business there. The investigation is going to focus on whether or not china is forcing some of those companies to reveal intellectual property in order to do business or if, in fact, there is something outright best. Now, the outcome of this investigation could lead to a tariff on chinese product. But that would be considerably far off in the future. This investigation could take about a year. The investigation comes as you mention at a very sensitive time. Mr. Trump urging china to pressure north korea to halt its newark weapons program. But Senior AdministrationOfficials Say that National Security and trade issues are two distinct very separate things and that the trade paperwork being signed today has nothing to do with whats happening with north korea. And lastly, whats the official reaction you might wonder from china . Good morning. Steve lets start with you. When i heard that they were spending hundreds of millions of dollars on missiles, i was thinking wait, what . They cant do that, can they . You know, this has been a problem. Iran has continued to test and develop Ballistic Missiles. Now, this is not specifically prohibited under the letter of the Iran Nuclear Deal agreement. But it certainly violates the spirit of that agreement. But the nuclear deal was focused on just getting iran to give up its ambition to develop nuclear weapon. It did not specifically limit it from testing Ballistic Missiles and developing Ballistic Missiles. Now, the parliaments decision to put more money into missiles is unfortunate, and its unfortunate for the relationship with the west and the u. S. But its appropriate for us to put sanctions in place. And if it continues to develop missiles, especially if it develops missiles that can be used to deliver Nuclear Weapons, more sanctions are appropriate. Steve rebecca, i remember during arguments from the administration at the time of the deal, they were saying, look, the country of iran just wants the Atomic Program so they can develop peaceful energy. Well, you dont need missiles to keep the lights on. No. The Missile Program is a sign that the iranians were never just going to have a Peaceful Nuclear program. Missiles are the Delivery Systems for nuclear warheads. Missiles go hand and glove with warheads. And in the past when weve had nuclear plif proliferaters like in south africa, they also give up their Missile Program. So this is something that the Obama Administration wanted to do. They wanted to restrict the missiles, but they didnt because the iranians didnt want them to. So the party thats willing to walk away from the deal. In this case it was the iranians, not the Obama Administration. So we got a bad deal. Steve it looks like the iranians are thumbing their nose at the United States. Weve got the deal. Weve got the money back. Now were going to build some missiles. Well, i can understand why people feel that way. I mean, first of all, lets dispense with the idea that iran has a democracy. Its parliament voted for this. But the parliament, the agenda for the parliament is set by irans theocracy. So its the religiouslymotivated hardliners who put in place this policy who are pushing forward on the Missile Program and theyre thumbing their nose at the u. S. , and its not appropriate. Its actually not a lot of money. Its not going to advance their Missile Program that much. Its more just sending the signal to the u. S. A bad signal and one that we need to confront and respond to by either putting in place more sanctions or making it clear that we will not tolerate iran doing much more to develop this Ballistic Missile system. Certainly, they cannot be allowed to develop a missile that could be used to deliver a nuclear warhead. Steve and of course, rebecca, thats what we said about the country of north korea. Thats exactly right. And, again, the iran deal, you know, all of these sanctions relief is going to go not only to exporting terrorism, which its going to do, its going to go to the Missile Program. What the iran deal was basically a jobs program for iranians, missile scientists and north korea. You Better Believe once north korea develops the capability, theyre going to export that to iran. This was a flawed deal and why so many of us opposed it for so long. And now the Trump Administration dealt with this problem. What do you do when you have this deal in place and the iranians arent violating it by building the Missile Systems that are going to be used for the Delivery System once the iran deal expires or they decide to break away from the deal and go ahead with their nuclear program. Steve speaking of the iran deal, lets hear the president of the United States talk about it. We know he doesnt like it. They are not in compliance with the agreement, and they are certainly not in the spirit of the agreement in compliance. And i think youll see some very strong things taking place if they dont get themselves in compliance. Steve okay. So, dave, you have to figure those very strong things would be more sanctions, although the president just did sign tougher sanctions against the country last week. Yeah. Well, i just want to point out. President trump has said that, and he also said during the campaign he was going to rip up the Iran Nuclear Deal on his first day in office. However, his administration has now certified twice to congress that iran is complying with the deal. So what the administration is actually communicating to congress under its requirement to report to congress on the prospects of the deal and how the deal is going and compliance is actually at odds with what hes saying and what you just quoted him as saying. Steve all right. Rebecca, well give you the final word on this. Yeah. The big problem with the iran deal is that it gave the iranians basically everything they wanted. Were going to continue watching the iranians, watch very carefully to make sure they abide by the letter of the agreement. Theres some indications that theyre already not. Very difficult to verify this agreement completely. But, again, makes it very difficult for the Trump Administration because you have all of these countries now investing in the country in iran and so now youre going to have to get everybody else agree to whenever we decide to pull out of this agreement. And zoos play a role in trying to protect wildlife. Our job is to inspire people with animals and why protecting nature is good for people. At our zoo this year, weve had a wide variety of babies. The most famous, of course is fiona the hippo. Shes a global hit, i can tell you. But weve also had critically endangered species born at our zoo. We have a black rhinocerous, weve had tigers, as well as critically endangered ring tailed lemurs and monkeys. We have a lot of babies this year. Pete i know we conjured up the image for match. Com for zoos. But you say youre taking a new approach to what others i always assume was natures way. How are you doing it differently . Well, it is important in zoos today for keepers and for curators to very carefully match animals. Its not exactly like a website like match. Com, but it sort of is an International Computer dating system for animals. The reason its so important is very few creatures in zoos today come from out in the wild. Theyre born at other zoos. And so being concerned about their genetics, making ensure not inbreeding them is vitally important. So there are more than 450 species that are part of the thing called ssb. The Species Survival plan. Who would be best to breed with whom . And then we go from there. Now, it is complex because animals arent always a good match as it were. That might be, you know, the personality or the temperament. It might be does the zoo have space for each animal . As well as how many zoos need a new rhinocerous or elephant. Steve if you take that lets say once that crocodile, alligator is big enough, and you breed it with another zoo, who winds up with the offspring . Because there would be two zoos vying for it. Well, thats a very important question. And the key thing is that the accredited zoos that are in the association of zoos and aquariums all have an agreement here in north america is that when babies are born in zoos, were responsible for them for the rest of their lives. It doesnt mean they have to stay in the zoo, but it does mean they have to go to a accredited facility. So part of that is part of the careful situation and why you dont want to overbead animals.
