think they can't. a guilty verdict for the home run king. tonight, barry bonds has a new title, convicted felon. we're live with where the bonds case goes from here. good evening, everyone. >> we're live at at&t park. we're starting our newscast a little late tonight because of the giants/dodgers game here on nbc bay area. but we have all your headlines for you, including extensive coverage on this bonds trial and verdict. they've been working on this case for almost eight years. and they spent millions of dollars in doing so. tonight, we finally have a verdict. here's the curve ball in all of this. this case is far from over. let's begin in the studio. >> it took jurors 3 1/2 days of deliberations to reach a decision. and a partial one at that. jurors found the slugger guilty of one count, obstruction of justice. the only count they could unanimously agree on. we have team coverage on what today's surprising verdict means for bonds' future. and nbc bay area spoke first to jurors on why they couldn't agree on most of those counts. >> reporter: the jury foreman tells me the first day of deliberations was so intense, the jury had to adopt a code of conduct. a juror could only speak if they were holding a talking stick. and there was a three-minute time limit. every juror had a strong opinion about this case. and not all of them are satisfied with the verdict. >> tears. hurt feelings sometimes. apologies for hurt feels. >> reporter: the jury foreman says eight women and four men on the barry bonds jury brought a lot passion into the jury room. >> it's more of whether he was answering the questions and being e vase i. we found his answer to be evasive. and we thought that was what the charge was about. >> reporter: there was unanimous guilty vote on count two, the charge that bonds said he had never received an injection from anyone but his doctor. >> we had 12 jurors who agreed on count number two, he was guilty on. we went home and slept on it. and came back and one of the jurors decided to change the vote. >> reporter: that was when the jury asked for kathy hoskins testimony to be read again. but the holdout juror didn't change the vote. bonds' legal team says the verdict clears his name. >> the counts which alleged steroids, which alleged needles, which alleged human growth hormone, those were mistried. there was no conviction. no verdict, no finding adverse to barry bonds. >> reporter: attorneys are advising bonds not to comment until the legal issues are sorted out. but he did quietly say there is nothing to celebrate. legal analysts expect a light sentence. >> in lieu of actually spending time in federal custody, it's very possible that barry bonds will not see a jail cell but will be required to do home confinement for up to a year. >> reporter: some jurors say they don't believe justice was served. >> i was leaning guilty on counts two and three. those were my votes. i would have liked to see it go that way. >> reporter: the next step in this case is a hearing on may 20th. that's when the department of justice may announce that it intends to retry bonds on the perjury charges. and the bonds' legal team is expected to ask the judge to throw out this guilty verdict. the verdict is puzzling to other key players in the balco case, including the man at the center of that steroid investigation. let's go back to at&t park to pick up the story from there. >> we're talking about victor conte, the former boss. in the several years dealing with him, he's very outspoken. he doesn't mince his words. he's been outspoken in his support of barry bonds. and outspoken in his criticism of the u.s. prosecution. we caught up with conte today. >> the verdict makes no sense to me. i don't understand how they cannot agree upon counts one, two, and three, which were false statement counts. and then, they jump right to the obstruction. the obstruction was caused how? that becomes my question. what did he do? if he wasn't convicted of doing anything, how do you jump to obstruction? i believe that barry bonds deserves to be in the hall of fame. i believe that many of the players that are in the hall of fame have used some sort of performance-enhancing substance themselves. >> that's the next part of the story. this is not just a legal issue. this is also a story about the legacy of barry bonds. will he or won't he be allowed into that hall of fame? that's to be determined in the several years to come by the hall of fame voters. if it was up to giants' fans, you know the drill here. fans are so supportive of barry bonds. but a lot of different reactions to today's news. we caught up with fans during and after tonight's game against the dodgers. >> i don't think he perjured himself. i believe him. and i don't think it matters that he -- if he was on something or not. i think that you or i could be on steroids. we wouldn't hit that many home runs. >> i think they felt that there was something wrong. they couldn't put their finger on it. that's the only reason they came up with the verdict they did. i mean, it's ridiculous. >> if they retry him again, just be more wasted money. they should use the money for something a little more important. >> as we review what happened today in the weeks and the years we've been covering barry bonds, one thing we know also, the people closest to barry bonds can tell you this about him. he was shocked about really today, not at all expecting any kind of guilty verdict in any of the counts. once again, jessica, this is not over. a lot more lawyering to be and linked to others coast-to-coast. 77-year-old joseph naso appeared in a marin courtroom today. tonight, jodie hernandez gets reaction from one of the victim's families. >> it's hard. it's very hard. you have every emotion that you had 34 years ago, come flooding back. >> reporter: that's the reaction of roxene robas' family seeing naso in court. he was convicted of her killing and the killing of three other northern california women. investigators say they found photographs and writings by naso in his reno home that linked him to the deaths. and they say there could be more. >> the case is ongoing in an investigative posture. and we have the counts that we believe the evidence is sufficient to prosecute at this point. >> reporter: naso is accused of killing two women in the late '70s and early '90s. all with first and last names starting with the same letters. eerily similar to the alphabet murders of the 1970s. naso reportedly lived in the rochester area during that time. >> i don't have the words to explain. >> reporter: tonight, roxene's niece hopes for closure for all of the families. >> it's never been forgotten. but none of us ever imagined, any of us in my family, who have imagined that after this amount of years that something like this would come up. and that there would be, you know, a chance at actual closure. >> reporter: naso will be back in court in two
