A look back over 1,000 years of russian history. In honor of that on a friday morning, were starting 400 years ago with Meredith Vieira sitting next to me. All i can say is the stench of vodka. And were off and running. Yes. Do we miss that. Exactly. We are on air, guys. We knew the Opening Ceremony would have drama and tension. The gang is all here. What we want to know is russia ready to welcome the the world. They better be. 40,000 people getting in the stadium is going to be a little awkward. They are still doing little funny things. You see them planting palm trees. The wrappers are still on them. Still painting going on. But the opening ceremonies seems ready. Yeah. A few little kinks. But it is so ambitious. If they pull it off its going to be fantastic. Well tell you more in just a little bit. More on that in a little while. More on the main event. Competition has already begun, as you know. Were told there will be a map of the earth projected on the floor and athletes will walk out of their individual countries. To get things started it will be transferred to this giant cauldron out here in the park. Whoo usa the completion of an epic journey. Today the torch proudly carried by gold medal hockey player. Its so cool just to be a part of this. Reporter the longest torch run in olympic history, from the arctic to outer space, even under water. Tonight ushers in the biggest winter games ever. 3,000 athletes from 88 countries. And already an electric start to the competition with bode miller recording the fastest qualifying run in the mens downhill. Today he is truly looking like a strong contender for sundays race. Reporter while Hannah Carney ripped into the moguls course. And crashing during training ahead of the first qualification run thursday, she is now out of the olympics. Within slopestyle got under way with australian sensation tora bright. And the pride of russia took to the ice yesterday, pashenko dazzled the crowds. But it was a difficult start for the American Team. Jeremy abbott fell, hitting the boards. Its just a matter of continuing on and moving forward. And a protest by a snowboarder who had a design on his board as being interpreted as a protest. And there is some controversy with people saying not many foreign visitors will be there inside the stadium. But as you said, billions will be watching on television. By the way, on the subject of liquids on flights, when we flew to russia last week, we werent loud to bring it on our carryon luggage but we were in checked bags. Apparently those are changing. I just want to say congratulations and good luck to everyone representing the red, white and blue at the Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games this year. We couldnt be prouder of you. I think theres always going to be a balance where there are areas of mutual interests where we Work Together well, cooperate. It is a constructive relationship when i interact with mr. Putin. But going to be times when we have real differences. We tend to have pretty blunt conversations. I give credit for when we sit down and talk theres not a lot of beating around the bush or niceties. Its all business. I tell him where i strongly disagree with him and he does the same. Probably shouldnt make too much of the fact that the president isnt attending these games. But theyre not getting much help from Mother Nature. Freezing cold weather is hanging on in the mid atlantic states. Some areas may get hit with more snow this weekend. And the good news, mountain snow to the snowpack. It is in a sense the reservoir for the west. Its going to keep coming in. Its been over a year since San Francisco saw more than san inch of rain for the month. So look at this. This is great news for them. It wont end the drought but it will help. And i got to work with and just all kinds of talented people who make me look a lot smarter than i really am. A very good morning to you. 7 26. Im laura garciacannon. San jose Police Looking for a stabbing suspect that happened outside the Marriott Hotel near the corner of san carlos and south market street. The man was stabbed at least once around 3 00 this morning. He was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. No arrests have been made. Police say the suspect does know the victim. It happened about a block away from where a man was stabbed to death yesterday morning near the fairmont. Police look for a man who got away after robbing a wells fargo. Investigators say the man in his 20s or 30s handed an employee a note demanding money. The employee complied. Police searched. It happened yesterday at the Wells Fargo Branch close to city hall. To call this ambitious is an understatement to say the very least. I got the chance to go behind the scenes with the Creative Force behind the extravaganza. Reporter once the graffiti mecca. A hip photo op for visitors passing by. And also the unlikely home base for production designer george seton and his team who have been tasked with designing the biggest show the world has ever seen. You would think for a project as big as the olympics in sochi, russia, all of this happening some place else and not in a studio in the heart of new york city. Look, in terms of design, weve produced a lot of things here in the studio. This is more than just the design. Its a huge collaboration of many different specialists from all over the world. Reporter hes always had a knack for bringing his imagination to life. The man behind the curtain has designed some of the worlds biggest productions. Ive done shows, but this is something else. Truly mind boggling. And comes to create the biggest show ever. Because they say, were a big country, we have to do it. Every time i arrive in sochi, and i see the things we discussed actually happening in this enormous scale. And you feel, are you serious . Are you actually doing this . Its just an idea i had in the middle of the night. And its actually happening. And we have the chance to talk to george a couple of days ago, and he fully admitted hes nervous but only has to get it right once. And hes been short on time. They only got in here really about a month ago. Exactly. Its a very complex show theyre going to put on. Lets bring in two members of team usa taking part in the ceremony. She has spent a great deal of time and her own money trying to level that playing field. For me its about gender inequality. In the last 50 years most of the research has been focused on men. Ever since 1984 more women have died from Heart Disease than men. According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 43 million women are affected by Heart Disease and it will claim one out of every three womens lives. Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. So in 2007 streisand picked up the phone and decided to do something about it. You and i spoke for almost two hours. Do you remember this . No. You had a million questions. Does that surprise you now knowing her . No. Perpetual student. Several years later the Barbara Streisand heart center was born at Cedarssinai Medical Center in los angeles. Dr. Noel barry is the director in charge of putting more than 22 million personally donated and raised by streisand to good use. Prior to our Research Women were typically falsely reassured that everything was fine. Were going to take a quick listen. When Ruth Greenburg suffered a heart attack at age 53, doctors were unable to determine the cause. It was a little surprising that there really are significant differences between men and women. You are not the work, the work stands by itself Barbara Streisands legendary career has brought her great fortune, and she says nothing brings her more joy than sharing it with others. When i was a little girl and i wanted to be famous and i wanted to see my name in lights on a marquis in a theater, but seeing in my name in stainless steel on the building at cedarssinai, i must say im just thrilled by it because its doing something thats bigger than me, bigger than show business. Its hopefully going to save womens lives. As you can see, Barbara Streisand very passionate about this cause. That was the first world medal we had ever had. It was a huge boost of confidence in ourselves and the direction that we were taking our skating. And that direction is also taking then to big endorsement deals for Companies Like kelloggs. Do you dream now of another medal . Absolutely. We have dreams of olympic gold. I dont want to say thats what drives us, but its certainly on our minds all the time. You have that visual of the medal . No. Of the moment . Another relationship some might find curious was their canadian rivals and Gold Medalists in vancouver, the two ice dancing pairs trained together in michigan. Explain this to me. You train in the same place as your chief competitors. Yeah. How does that work . You know, i think because we have the same coach we have so much faith in her that we know were not going to end be up with the same music or the same elements or anything like that, but i think every team has a really different style, kind of crafting their program. No dirty looks in the locker room . Friendly or not, davis and white intend to be standing above them on the olympic podium this time around. What does it mean to you to be getting another chance at this biggest of dreams . Going over as ambassadors for our country in the greatest sporting event in the world, we want to set a great example and, you know, i think that we have a really great opportunity to do that. Youre a really bad, bad, bad guy in this movie. Was that fun . It was kind of fun. This is such a classic film in this kind of genre and nature. And the good people were good and the bad people were bad. And theres no kind of gray area. And for an actor, thats a fantastic thing to be able to play. And the dialogue was just so rich, and it was so beautifully written that i had an awful lot of fun. I knew that was part of what drew you to the role, as i understand it, you were a little bit skeptical. When you saw this movie, you didnt think this was a Kiefer Sutherland movie . It was described to me poorly. It was an action movie that kind of runs into a disaster film. And that at that moment didnt sound that appealing to me. I said, well, i dont think thats what i want to do right now. And some people talked to me and said trust me, you should read it. And i did. The story was so beautifully written. All the characters were unbelievably well developed. And i was very lucky and kind of changed my mind quickly. The movie doesnt forget the story but it also doesnt skimp on the effects. The production values are amazing. Ive done 24 for eight years, and so its been a long time since ive done a film that was this big. This is a big 100 million movie. And it looks every penny of it. That was a real different process for me. On 24 were shooting very fast and making the equivalent of 12 films a year. We did this twohour movie almost over the same amount of time. But visually, its stunning. And its also a piece of history that i think is actually really timely. I think in the last ten years between tsunamis and earthquakes, weve really come to terms with Mother Nature and her power and certainly the eruption of that volcano and the disruption of that society is something that kind of will bend your ear. It will. Now, you mentioned 24, im glad, because i was going to bring it up. Your viewers and fans are delighted its coming back. And i think people were surprised by that. What made you decide to do another run of shows . I was surprised by it, too. Howard gordon, our lead writer and has always been on 24 had Great Success with a show called homeland. And he called me up one day and said ive got this idea for 12 episodes of 24, would you be interested . I said why dont you just do them for homeland . And he said no, this is for 24. And ive had such a great time making that show. The character is something i loved playing. And to be able to shoot it in england, which were doing these 12 episodes is kind of a real bonus. I think it will look very cool. Not to push our luck, but would you do 12 more or 24 the movie after that . Right now, im focused on these 12. And im nervous about it. Its a huge responsibility. We did eight seasons we were all proud of. So to open the can up again is potentially very dangerous. Im going to focus on these 12 myself. Everyone is so excited. Ive been hoping for a boy from the beginning. But ultimately, whatever god has blessed us with will be a blessing. They even have names picked out. If its a girl, weve decided on chloe lee. And if its a boy, pierce nathaniel. Her obstetrician will monitor the screening. This is her anatomy scan where well find out the sex of the baby and just make sure everythings progressing well. The American Heart Association came out with important facts for women to know about when it comes to Heart Disease and to be aware of high Blood Pressure. What should we know . These new stroke guidelines presented. Its really great they came out during heart month. They emphasize the fact that heart and cardiovascular disease is not just about Heart Disease but the vessel to the brain and stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death for women in this country. It affects more women than men. The guidelines emphasize that high Blood Pressure is the most easily reversible risk factor for stroke. And women over 75 are at higher risk, women over 55. The older you get, the more likely you are to develop hypertension. And women have to be concerned with it years later, as well. Thats right. There are specific conditions like childbirth and hormonal status that can increase your risk of stroke. Lets get to our ladies here. And as we start with the nurses here helping us take our Blood Pressure. You feeling calm, savannah . Yes. Very zen. Youre very zen right now. How do we know were in range . So normal Blood Pressure is less than 120 over 80. How often should women be checking their Blood Pressure . The American Heart Association recommends at least once a year over the age of 20. Great tips are make exercise part of your life. The American Heart Association suggests 150 minutes of moderate exercise over the course of a week. Stand up, we know that people who sit more stand up. You may have a lower life expectancy. Lindsey just asked for a rematch. Very competitive. A competitor here. I know. And make food medicine. We recommend eating 4 to 5 cups of fruits and vegetables a day. If you eat a smoothie, you can get it all in at once and it tastes delicious. I had something i wanted to say. The most important part of this is that you have to you need, obviously, bananas for banana bread. So instead of just peeling it and mashing it up. I use my hands to work it a little bit and get you prewarm it. She actually it changes the texture of the banana bread, it makes it its like over mixing ground meat. Youve got the mashed banana. Yeah, mashed bananas, organic brown sugar, apple sauce. Heres the trick, apple sauce to make the bread soft and moist without using butter. Oh. Thats healthy. I gave her a hard time. When do the chocolate chips come into the picture . Exactly. Then she dumped a bunch of chocolate chips in it. No butter and add in chocolate chips. Compromise. And transfer everything out of the bowl here. Okay. Brown it to add lots of color. Right. So add butter. Were going to add our beef. And you cut it really thin, then, right . Yeah. Thinly sliced and were going to brown it, season it with a little bit of salt. Let that brown. Okay. Let this brown and add our sauce. I already have my sauce made here. Were going to start with the roux. Equal parts butter equal parts flour. Put that down for a few minutes. Add our milk, slowly whisk that in. Already added some of our broth. And once thats all done, were going to add it back into our pan. Okay. Once this is brown, you add the roux back into here. And serve it on top of egg noodles, right . Yeah. I couldnt compete as an ingenue. So 40 years later yes. They came to me and said, do you think you would be interested in it. Like, yes yes, im so interested in that did you have any doubts about the physicality of it . I would worry about that. Well, i have to tell you, the trapeze is the easiest part. Oh, yeah. The singing part you said was a little more difficult for you. They just fly. There is a point in this, annie, where you disrobe, not all the way, but enough. Completely naked . How do you feel while youre disrobing and how does the audience react . Well, the trapeze is my favorite part, so it is it is like, yeah, here comes the good part. It is i do go up quite high. And there is no net, and there is no safety anything. No harness . No. Youre on the trapeze. But im up there with this Beautiful Boy who is mighty and strong and there is all these, you know, olympic kind of athletes, Cirque Du Soleil people under me who would leap and, you know, grab me out of the air like a hummingbird or anything to go wrong. I feel so supported by their love and skill. But still a pretty demanding number. And nobody knows you as a singer. But i didnt know about your theater background so you knew how to sing . Would you know what to do if your dog got violently ill . Dr. Gene solomon is here to help keep our pets out of trouble and happens to be my dogs vet. So nice to meet you. How are you . These are the nono foods. We always hear about chocolate. And grapes. What are the others . Whats up with chocolate. Chocolate as you can see, a bunch of different types of chocolate here starting with the chocolate covered coffee beans. Which is the worst. These are the worst. The worst on the table here. Why . It is a combination of the chocolate as well as the coffee. They both have toxic elements that can cause a dog to go into hyperactivity, seizure and death. Wow. It doesnt take a lot for either a small dog up to a large dog to sometimes they dig into something and before you know it, it is empty. They do it when you havent seen them do it and you dont know what theyve eaten. Common coffee table items and dogs pick them and eat them. Well talk about what to do if they ingest in a minute. Grapes arent great either. Grapes, first of all, dogs love grapes. Raisens. They love to eat them. They can cause the dog to go into kidney failure with a fairly small amount of ingestion. And it is something that needs to be addressed by your veterinarian. Avocado, onion. We heard it is so good for you. But it is so bad for dogs. Yeah. The onions, the scallions, very bad as far as causing red blood cell problems. Needs to be addressed immediately. Most of the items as far as the scallions and the onions can be hidden as far as being in steaks and sauces. Be careful. Other things where you might not know theyre there. If your dog ingests any of these items, avocado, medication, what should you do . Anything you know theyve ingested, the first thing to do is if you have something in the house, something as simple as hydrogen peroxide, a small dog can you can make the dog drink a little bit. How do you do that . Either with a little oral syringe and let them drink slowly at about one teaspoon for about a fivepound dog. You can also pour a little peroxide, mix it with a little bit of, like, oatmeal or little baby food so the dog will eat it, something theyll ingest. There is also capsules that you can give and the dosages on the bottle. Or you can get to the veterinarian and they can provide something that will make the animal vomit. If they throw up, does that mean its fine and you dont have to go to the vet . Depending what it is theyve eaten. They all have different toxic y toxicities and the vet will be able to tell what needs to be done. This is something you had, your dog was choking on something. Bambino, i gave hmm a little treat, it was just not going down. I could tell he was doing the biggest thing with choking is prevention. Thats the most important thing, keeping things around the house that theyre going to be able to swallow like little balls or socks, try to pick those things up, good lesson for children anyway. But if the animal is choking, and you notice that something is either lodged in their mouth, first thing to do, dont try to get it out of the mouth. If you enter into the dogs mouth, the reflex to the dog is to close the mouth and the person gets bitten. Thats no good. If the dog is choking, to get the dog up and allowing gravity to kind of work with it. Turn him upside down. As best you can, with the head down and with pressure from the rib cage and with either gentle compressions, down, and in a motion to try to dislodge and get whatever object is out. Again, not trying to get into the mouth. I would have done that first. Okay. Were out of time, but this is so important. One last can you make it a couple of seconds here. Good day from sochi in russia to all those americans who perhaps are preparing to watch the Opening Ceremony tonight on nbc. We are coming on the air to update you on something of a drama that was taking place during the opening ceremonies as they happened in realtime in russia tonight. An airliner has put down in turkey after a hijacker made himself known to the captain and crew, threatening, saying he had a bomb on board. That much has never been proven. There are reports that he has been subdued. The plan was landed at the less than primary airport in turkey and after some drama on the ground, again, there are reports that it has been subdued. But this entire region is on a hair trigger today and tonight with the start of the winter games. Richard enle part of our team covering the Winter Olympics is outside the main stadium here in sochi tonight. Richard, what else do we know about this . According to turkish officials this plane left from the ukraine. It left from the city of kharkov. It was originally destined to go to istanbul but a passenger sitting in seat 2f, 110 passengers on board said to the crew and pilot that there was a bomb on the flight. The pilots appear to be quite calm in this situation. They didnt resist. They told this attempted hija hijacker that they would comply with his demands. The hijacker said he wanted the flight diverted to sochi. At that stage the pilot said, no problem. They were complying. But they didnt divert to sochi. Instead, they continued on to istanbul. As soon as they entered turk irairspace they tripped an alarm saying there was an hijacking situation under way. Two f16 fighter jets were scrambled. They escorted the plane as it landed in the airport where it was originally destined to go on the asian side in istanbul. Once it was on the ground, it was quickly surrounded by Security Forces and we have been told by both u. S. And turkish officials that the man was taken into custody. There are still some passengers being inspected. But at this stage it seems the situation was contained. It has never been confirm, however, if this man ever had a bomb at all, as the plane is still being inspected. Brian . Richard engel in sochi. Reports starting to circulate as well this would be hijacker was in somewhat of an altered state. The pilots have one more trick up their sleeves. They turned off the internal gps air maps to throw the would be hijacker off, letting him believe they were, indeed, following his instructions to take the aircraft to sochi where, of course, opening ceremonies and realtime were under way. I didnt quite know how to handle it. But for vancouver i had a really weird focus where i just knew exactly what i needed to do. And nothing bothered me. I was really cool, i was calm. How do you know this is a da vinci salad . This was found in one of his old notebooks, a Shopping List he had written down, all the ingredients, probably not exactly, but the ingredients for this salad, and he did this vinaigrette that were going to throw together with mint and parsley and fennel. He was a vegetarian. So he wouldnt have eaten the chicken were thats all right. Well do it for him. Here is the fennel. Youll get the idea there. We toss that with lemon juice. Some olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. I like it better raw. I do too. We have watermelon radishes. The cutest things. We grow those in our garden. And nice mix of frise and all the herbs, parsley, thyme and mint. The mint is a nice surprise in there. Okay. If you want to pour this in there. Whats that . Thats white wine vinegar. And thats olive oil. Dont drink it. No. And then salt and pepper in there and well season that up and make it taste like something. Why dont you finish that up. Very different. Well dress the salad and might the chicken down here the chicken, we have a great piece of chicken and well make it drunken. Okay. So wine. Any kind . What do you like best . A dry white wine is fine. Pinot grigio would be perfect for this. A little for the broth, a little for the chicken. A cup of oil. Thats a lot. And youre going to let it sit in there. This is key, right . Nice squeeze it all over. Exactly. And then were going to let that marinate. You can let it marinate overnight or maybe five hours or so. Leave it in the refrigerator. Do you cook the lemon inside . We are. Once were done, were going to take that the chicken doesnt mind. The chicken does not mind. All the cooking from the restaurant will be from the renaissance.
