Welcome to today and to sochi, russia. Im matt lauer. Im Savannah Guthrie. It is crazy. You have the black sea. It is a beautiful shot. It could be a beach day today. Then if you look in the other direction, you have the snowcapped mountains of sochi and beyond. I imagine the snow is getting soft as the temperatures are beginning to rise. It has been an issue for the athletes. Matt, im glad you can add sportscaster to your resume. Thank you. A tip of the hat to shaun white who came down from the mountains. Probably not his favorite morning of the year. He is down here greeting people on the plaza. Thanks to that, shaun. We appreciate it. We will have all the latest on the olympic action in the moment. Our latest story is the weather. The weather back home. A huge contrast to what we have here. We will start with al. It is pretty bad. It is historic in devastation. We look live right now at i85, braselton, georgia. An hour north of atlanta. Six people so far have died on roads in texas and mississippi. Thousands of flights have canceled. 100 Million People affected by this. It is going to get worse. It is just getting started. As we go to the map. From texas all the way to new england, we have winter storm watches and warnings. From atlanta to charleston, ice storm warnings. Up the coast, Winter Weather warnings and advisories. Here is what is happening. This is why it is such a long track event and why look at the intensity. Heavy thunderstorms down through the gulf. To the north of that, the cold air is filtering in. You see the pink and white. Northeast winds funneling around the High Pressure system. You have the mountains of the appalachian. As the air gets trapped from atlanta to the northeast, we will see a mix of precipitation. The rain will freeze. We get sleet. We get freezing rain. Look at the ice accumulations. We are talking about from atlanta into parts of South Carolina,. 50 inch to 1 inch to almost 2 inches of ice east of atlanta. Augusta, south of columbia,. 25 of an inch. We are telling people stay off the roads. The system continues up the coast. Becomes a classic noreaster. That blue line, that is the freezing line, where you see the difference between snow, rain and ice. Low pressure deepens off the coast. Heavy wet snow inland. Coastal winds of over 50 Miles Per Hour. Look at the accumulation range. Atlanta, 1 to 3 inches on top of what they already got. As you make your way up the coast, up to 2 feet of snow in the mountains in the appalachians. As you head up into new york and new jersey and parts of new england, anywhere from 6 to 9 inches. 3 to 6 inches as well. Atlanta was crippled by winter storm leon two weeks ago. What lessons have they learned . How are they faring . My colleague, sam champion with the Weather Channel is in atlanta. What are you seeing, sam . Lessons learned, al. Everything in shape as far as the city goes. This storm is a bad one. You can whip out the word catastrophic for this one. By the time it passes atlanta, we believe it will have been with a solid layer of ice and sleet and snow. The let me show you the sleet that is here that has been falling into the area this morning. You see the particles stacking up. The good thing about sleet instead of freezing rain, freezing rain is a solid shed. Sleet, you can break it up and move it around. Let me show you 75. There is a police car moving up in very light traffic. Very light traffic. Different situation than the 28th of january where the entire road was blocked with cars and trucks stuck. Let me show you the road surfaces. A strange move as we move around our set up here. Bear with me. There is a bit of slush from yesterday which has melted. Let me move the cone and show you what you are dealing with on the roads. All of this stacking up. Yeah. When treated, it is slushier. You have a good strong layer on there that makes it very difficult to move around. Lets show you some other things that are happening in the area this morning. Lets talk salt trucks and spreaders. Atlanta has about 125 of them. They have been out, they say, yesterday, today and throughout the day. We are looking at about Power Outages. Easily 77,000, that is just what we heard about an hour ago in the southeast. That doubled within that hour. We will be worse through the day. We are talking about a stacking inch or more of ice on tree limbs and power lines with a strong gusty wind behind it to break the limbs and take them down on the tree lines. That means we will have more Power Outages. A quick deal on cancellations with airports. Almost 3,000 Flights Canceled so far. Al. I tell you, sam, people will be dealing with this in the southeast for weeks to come. We want to head 250 miles northeast of atlanta. Parts of North Carolina picking up more than a foot of snow. That is where nbcs Peter Alexander is in charlotte. Peter, good morning to you. Reporter al, good day. The first snow was a preview that fell yesterday. The real act is today. In the last 15 minutes, it is starting to fall here in and around charlotte with 6 inches in the city. Up to 12 inches in other parts of the state expected. Just yesterday, the city official said i never want to have an atlanta in charlotte. Hoping not to repeat the experience they had a couple of weeks ago. State officials this morning told me they prepped the roads across the state since sunday. Hundreds of accidents across the region. So far, here specifically, they have been okay. North carolina and South Carolina, governors declaring states of emergency and schools out for 141,000 kids in charlotte. Al. All right. Peter alexander in charlotte. Thank you. As it makes its way up the coast, the 540 line is so important depending on where it sets up. That is the heavy snow to the west of that line. You will keep us informed. Thank you. We appreciate it. Lets get to olympic action in sochi. Some of the biggest names on team usa are competing today. Speed skater shani davis, Julia Mancuso on the slopes. Natalie has that covered. Good morning. After mondays bronze medal win, Julia Mancuso was hoping to add another medal in the downhill. It did not turn out the way she wanted. Her olympic run is not over yet. Julia mancuso entered the womens downhill looking to tie bode miller as the most decorated american skier in olympic history. She came up short placing eighth in the event that saw a tie for gold. Mancuso has a shot at medal when she skis in the giant slalom on tuesday. It follows another disappointment for team usa when the face of olympic snowboarding shaun white failed in the quest for the record third gold medal in the halfpipe. On the course criticized by competitors, white had a great qualifying run, but made costly mistakes. He finished fourth. Doesnt have enough speed to try. It. As the gold went to switzerlands iouri podladtchikov. Known as ipod. White opted out of the slopestyle and leaves sochi without a medal. Im an olympian. Im here with the u. S. Team. It is like rocky. Bobsled team witnesses history in the stands. Cross country skiing falls. He tried to finish on a broken ski when the canadian coach jumped in with the replacement. The crowd roared as he completed the race. And if at first you dont succeed, the women of japans hockey team have been trying to score an olympic goal for 16 years and finally success. Take a bow. Well, speaking of hockey, a big rivalry game. The u. S. Playing canada. You recall canada beat us for gold in vancouver on home turf. This time is grudge match. Tuesday, the house of representatives passed an extension to al law the government to borrow more money through 2015. The senate is expected to vote today. Jose alvarenga was in tears and he could barely speak after his plane touched down in san salvador. He was discovered late last month after blown out to sea after a fishing trip. His family is glad he is alive and back home. And now to a story that hits close to home. Tom brokaw revealed he is battling cancer. Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Doctors are optimistic about his treatment. Tom released a statement saying with exceptional support of family and medical team and friends, im optimistic about treatments and look forward to my life and work and my adventures still to come. You did not have to deal with a lot of disappointment in your career. You have been so successful. How are you dealing with it . It is tough. I dealt with this when i was younger coming up in the ranks of the sport. It feels like old times, i guess. You know, i learned a lot from it. It was a tough night. For everyone. Im appreciative of actually being an olympian and being here and competing and doing the whole part. Im disappointed in my performance. The first run with a scrape and then more than a scrape. The New York Times it shows what happened there. I have never seen it. That board is not supposed to bend like that. You hit the top of the halfpipe. What happened . It is doing the bendy. Sport is making good boards. That was just my best attempt to salvage that run. I hope ca came up a little bit short on the run. That was a tough run. There were issues during practice in the previous days before the event. You know, they pulled together last minute for the event. I was definitely feeling the pressure. Were you feeling more pressure than normal . I think so. I pulled out of slopestyle which is something i wanted to compete in. I still stick by my decision to do that. I needed extra practice for the halfpipe. I had amazing qualifying run. I dont know. Just didnt do it. You mentioned the amazing qualifying run. You had the highest score in the competition. It was in the qualifying run. If it was in the finals, you would have been a Gold Medalist. Sorry to say that. One of the times where it was running through my head. Im happy. I move on from here. I dont think it makes or breaks my career this one night. It is a disappointment. When i caught up with you in the mountains last week and you had a trick in your back pocket. If you were desperate, you were going to pull it out. As it turned out, that trick did not come out. I did not make it to that trick which was more disappointing. If i lay down a run and im beaten, im okay with it. I put my best effort out and thats okay. This is so disappointing for me because i did not get that opportunity. Its all right. You tweeted before the finals to your fans and thanked them for your support. Am i reading too much in that if i read that as a goodbye to competition . Definitely not. I mean i got lost there for a minute. I feel like it was more of a thank you. Two disciplines at the olympics. Qualifying to get here. The russia calling and everything. It has been a journey to make it this far. I wanted to thank everybody that supported me and wish me luck. I needed it. Im doing my math. You will be 31 years old when the games in south korea rolls around. Is there a chance you can come back and go out on top . I think so. I think so. [ applause ] i need everybody now more than ever. Good morning and congratulations. Thank you. Luge has been an olympic sport for 50 years. No american man or woman has ever gotten a medal in luge singlines until you. Yes. It felt great. Im happy i was able to do it, obviously. It is crazy coming into the games thinking i will make history. It never crossed my mind. I wanted to have four solid runs and enjoy myself and soak it all in with my third games. I have been before. I think that helps. It is a lot of fun. It is one thing to win a medal and another thing to make history and break that barrier. What does it do for the sport of luge . I hope moving into the future that it opens up doors for the future generations and brings more attention to luge. We are not exactly a mainstream sport. It will be interesting to see how that changes in the u. S. And help the kids coming up. Take me through the final run. Was there a moment where you could think i could do this . I could contend for a medal. Going into the fourth run after the first three and having solid results, i thought if i make it down clean, i can do this. Im going for that fourth around. A couple of spots on the track were a bit tricky. I knew i had to get through those clean. I knew halfway down. When i got through there, i thought, holy cow. I knew once i got to the finish line i had a good run. It was going to be good. You have your whole family. You are from a little town of 1,900 people in new york. I know they are happy for you going to the olympics. What will they do when you come home with the silver medal . Oh, my gosh. I cant imagine. It will be amazing and chaos. Im laura garciacannon. Investigators in san jose talking with witnesses who saw a deadly stabbing overnight. They say a fight broke out inside johnny v. s near the corner of santa clara and 1 streets. The fight poured out into the streets and witnesses say one man stabbed another man in the chest. The suspect was arrested nearby. Investigators say the man seen in this Surveillance Video may have abducted a 13yearold and elderly man in oakland, sparking an amber alert. The three last seen in the parking lot of the lincoln shopping center. Investigators are asking people to look out for a red or burgundy sedan license plate number 6jfm648. And the russians dominated tuesdays Short Program while an american duo posted a personal best score. Were going to look ahead to the free skate with Kristi Yamaguchi and evan lysacek. Back home, the president and mrs. Obama welcomed 350 guests for a state dinner in honor of french president Francois Hollande. Among the stars in attendance, Bradley Cooper. And a dangerous mix of snow and ice is impacting millions of people from texas to the carolinas as that storm moves east more than 2,000 flights going to atlanta today have been canceled. Check your local carrier. The Weather Channel is in the thick of it in augusta, georgia, this morning. Good morning to you. Reporter with the masters only only eight weeks away, the last thing they want is an ice storm in augusta, georgia. Its already accumulating on the trees. Were expecting it to get to an inch. Imagine eight times the ice on these tree limbs. And many of them will succumb to that and fall over. Thats what we expect. A lot of these to fall over. Weve also had at times a mixture of sleet. Thats the worstcase scenario. Freezing rain coming down, temperatures at 30, throw something down on the ground, its already 32 degrees and that means youre accelerating in the cooldown process of the roads. Interstate 20 from atlanta all the way to South Carolina is going to be an absolute mess. Scenes like this with potentially 4 to 8 times the ice we see already here are going to be very, very common, unfortunately, across georgia and South Carolina. You have to go back to 2000 the last time we had Power Outages were expecting here. Somewhere in the tune of 500,000 people. And they will be without power for a couple of weeks potentially from what were hearing. An awful situation in the south as we work our way through mid february. Back to you. All right. Take a look at what were experiencing and expecting for today. First of all here, the weather, you cant ask for nicer weather but as you go up to the mountains, this beautiful weather is not exactly what people are looking for, especially the skiers. Tonight, 24, in the upper areas, upper 30s in the valleys, for tomorrow, more of the same, temperatures up into the upper 30s, mid50s as you get closer to the valleys. Now, as far as weather stateside, you can expect in the Pacific Northwest more heavy rain, avalanche warnings, as well. Why, weve got a big storm system coming in and its going to cause a major problem. The good news is, its helping some of the drought situations but the rain isnt getting where it needs to be, but upward of 3 to 4 inches of rain along the Pacific Northwest coast and the mountains upwards of a well, the a chilly start to the day but well see a nice finish. Plenty of fog throughout to go around, though. San francisco shows you widespread cloud cover. However, its mostly low clouds in the city by the bay. Find fog in the north bay seeing that cloud touch the ground here. Travel kaucautiously through sa rafael. South bay 67 degrees today. Tomorrow, looks good as well. Its home to these games marquee event, figure skating. The pairs competition wraps up after the historic start in the Short Program. How do you followup winning the gold medal . By setting a new world record. Perfect. Fresh off helping russia take the top spot in the team skating competition, pairs favorite Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov dazzled in the Short Program tuesday night. If they skate it clean, it literally unbeatable. And with home ice advantage on their side, they look likely to bring the pairs gold back to russia to the nation that won the 12th straight Olympic Games from 1964 all the way to torino in 06. Gold medal in the pair event after a gold medal in the team event would ignite this crowd, establish that russia is 100 back. But some of their closest competition comes from fellow countrymen. They got the crowd roaring tuesday. Twisting, turning and jumping into third. Meanwhile germany gave a colorful interpretation of the pink panther. Oh, my goodness, that was huge. They had a personal best, but ended in ninth place. Is there still a chance to be in medal contention tonight, evan . Definitely. Like you said, they had a personal best and the olympics tends to do that for so many olympians. Theyre flawless, perfect on all of their tricks. Complexity is there, incredible speed, skate very close together. It should have been a world record. If there were a gold medal for outfits. Who would we give it to last night . Evan would give it to plyushenko. Shes my girl. They skated to the pink panthers. Outfit aside, she pulls it off. Do you think they are contenders, as well . Absolutely. They are fourtime world champions and theyve been sitting in that second, third position for a long time and they really, really want this olympics. So, you know, plyushchenko, they always bring Something Different to the ice, innovative with the choreography. And they have a chance, they absolutely do. Its great to have them in the mix. I was in the arena the other night. Such a homefield advantage for the russians. They are cheering so hard. How does that affect you on the ice and you know all these cheers are for your competitors . Well, it can affect athletes in a different way. For some of them, its going to throw them off for sure. Weve seen them so far. We saw it a little bit in the team competition. The russians are very loud and very prorussia. But for other athletes, theyve used that to their advantage. And tonight is going to be very telling because the germans skate last and they say they may put in their last element of throw triple axel, which is their hardest trick to end the night. Thatd be a nice surprise for all of us. And kristi, i have to mention a little history here, you were a pairs figure skater early in your career. Do you like where the sport is right now . Garciatorres was indicted yesterday by a Santa Clara County grand jury, it means the trial can go forward. Lamar last seen march 16th, 2012, in her home in morgan hill. She never made to school. Treacherous conditions. Snow, sleet, freezing rain in places making it dangerous for drivers. We are told at least six people have been killed on the roads in texas. And in mississippi, hundreds of accidents across the region, some spinouts being caused as a result of that as well. Its not just the roads that are dangerous though. The skies are being forced to shut down. At least in terms of the aircraft flying. 2,800 Flight Cancellations today. About 100,000 people now already without power as a result of this. You want to take the precautions and look at what people are doing across the carolinas. These pictures are being tweeted to us. The store shelves are empty, being raided, as people take the necessary precautions in a storm that could last for a while. Because what happens is once you get ice and the power lines and the trees, theyll come down. This is a very, very vigorous system. Look at atlanta, georgia. The roads starting to coat over with snow and ice. Just to the north of georgia, we have already picked up about three to four inches of snow. You get into North Carolina, were talking about a foot of snow. Right now the latest on airline cancellations, 2,800. The delays so far, atlanta, freezing rain. Charlotte is snow. Memphis is snow. And as you look at the ice accumulation, the dark purple. Anywhere from one to two inches of ice. Which will coat the roads, bring down power lines and trees and so were talking not only delays and widespread Power Outages, but then on top of that, snow. Roanoke, 10 to 14 inches of snow. Further to the north, anywhere from five to eight inches, new york city, up to nine. Six inches of snow up into boston. So this system is really very powerful. Well, closing arguments today in the murder trial of a florida man accused of shooting a black teen during an argument over loud music. Software engineer michael dunn testified tuesday he pulled time the gas station next to several teens in an suv. He said he was threatened in a dispute and thought he saw a gun barrel. He was asked why he didnt call police until the next day. Youre right, it sounds crazy and i couldnt tell you what i was thinking when it was happening. All i can tell you is i didnt do it. Prosecutors say the teens were unarranmed and he fired ni shots. Home at last. A fisherman from el salvador who spent more than a year adrift in the pacific arrived back home tuesday night. He could barely speak after his plane touched down. He was discovered in the Marshall Islands late last month after he was blown out to sea after a fishing trip. A growing problem in the skies had the fbi taking extreme action to catch offenders. The agency is offering a 10,000 reward to catch people who point lasers into airplane cockpits. Thats two complete spins. Logan with a terrific run to start the finals. And since, the top scores have put her in medal contention. Run number two ended a bit bumpier. Logan spins out. With a tumble turned penguin slide. No additional style points for the penguin slide. But for the vermont native whos been skiing since she was 2 years old it was enough to secure the silver. Its your first olympics, first medal, and the first time ski slopestyle has been an event here. Has that sunk in yet . It hasnt sunken in yet, but its such an honor to stand on the podium for my country. A lot of this crazy warm weather were having, did that affect you in either direction . Was it good, bad or make no difference . It affected me in a little ways. The snows really slushy and warm, so our speed was affected by that, but we had our wax techs up there putting some juice on our skis and getting us over the jumps, and i just thought of it as another spring day skiing, so it was fun. I was reading that you kind of got yourself mentally in that place and thought, you know, im going to treat this like a spring day and let it ride. Yeah. And thats how i kind of psyched myself up and not put any pressure on it. Just going out there, having fun with my friends. You had an amazing first run. I mean, how did that feel as youre Just Cruising down the slopes and just rocking out . Landing the last jump and knowing that you put up a good run and hearing the crowd roar was awesome. My heart was racing. I couldnt stop shaking, my legs, from adrenaline, and it was the best feeling in the world. I mean, honestly, it took near perfection to beat you, dara howell, who came in with that insane run. And i know you had said that youre actually happy she did so well, because if youre going to lose to anybody, you want somebody to have done that well. Definitely. Our ski industrys so small, so we know everyone. Were up at the top cheering on everyone, and she had an amazing run, shes an awesome skier, and i wouldnt have wanted to stand next to anyone else. So it was fun having my friends on the podium with me. Something interesting about you, in 2012 and 13, you were injured. And rather than just sit around, you decided to actually become a freestyle skiing judge. Do you think that changed your perspective and help you ultimately see it from they are perspective . Absolutely. Seeing from the judges booth, what they wanted to see from competitors and runs to get the top spot. Now when i make up Miles Per Hour my runs, i always have those voices in my head saying you need to grab this or put that there. So, it definitely helped shape my run altogether. They are with us now, members of team usa who were there for this historic moment and fought so hard for it. Ladies, good morning. Good morning. Are you feeling like trailblazers this morning . Its hard to say. Its been quite emotional time and its been really fun and its great to be at the olympics and we can call ourselves olympians now. Ready for a whole generation of ski jumpers to come behind us. You talk about it being an emotional time. It obviously made history. Did either of you or any of you think of that historic significance the first time you stepped on top of the jump . I think you try and forget about that and just treat it like any other competition. If you think about its the olympics and its every four years, it can get a little overwhelming. So you try and dial it down. But it is historical and its great to be a part of. Jessica, we heard wind was a little bit of a factor for some of the jumpers. Did you feel that . Did you feel it affected you at all . You know, it might of. But the truth is, its an outdoor sport and sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you dont. And we train to be able to deal with all sorts of conditions. We got what we got and performed to the best of our ability last night. Sara, youre coming off an injury, do you think you came back a little early . Would you like to have had a little more time . Of course i wish i could have rehabbed completely and my knee was giving me quite a bit pain these jumps leading up to and wish i could have had more training jumps. But for me, its a privilege to compete next to these girls and be part of this historical day. I worked my butt off to be here and i have to be proud of that. Anybody looking ahead four years thinking they might be want to be part of the second time during the winter games . I havent thought about what im doing tomorrow. Yeah. Its going to be a crazy event then, too, and i hope im there to see it. I doubt ill be competing, but its great to see the sport moving forward and that there is another olympics. The president runs this vast country from the kremlin. So here we are. Inside the kremlin palace. Reporter come with us up the very same steps in the heart of Vladimir Putins government. One of the biggest events so far today, womens downhill skiing at the last winter games in 2010, the race belongs to lindsey vonn as she grabs the gold medal. She hoped to repeat in sochi, but as you know was forced out because of that devastating knee injury. Lindsey, good morning to you. Hey, matt. Hey, were going to go through the results in the womens downhill in a second, tough for you to see them come in . You know, obviously this is the race you wanted to be a part of. Yeah, its definitely disappointing. This whole olympics has been tough for me to watch. But at the same time, im still cheering on my teammates and looking forward to seeing a lot of americans on the top of the podium. All right. Julia mancuso finished eighth in the womens downhill today. Youre going to get to see the run a little later tonight. But does the result surprise you at all, lindsey . Yeah, a little bit, julias coming off a bronze medal in the combined and super combined. And shes skiing so well. Did well in the downhill training runs. So i kind of expected her to get another medal. At the same time, shes got two more events she definitely can medal in. You know, her olympics are still very bright. But, you know, i think the conditions definitely played a factor. I talked to my friend maria who won the super combined and said it was getting soft in the bottom of the course. But must have skied very well to still have won considering her starting number. Yeah. You talk about winning. There was actually a tie for the gold medal, which i dont think has ever happened before. Lets look ahead to friday in the super combined for the men. We talked a little bit about bode miller the other day, lindsey. And he had a disappointing finish in the downhill. As an athlete, how do you get that and knock it out of your head and get ready for the next event . Well, i think, you know, having disappointing races definitely, for me, at least, motivates me and makes me even more determined in the next race. Sometimes you just need to get the butterflies out of the way and then after that youll be totally fine. So im very hopeful that bodes going to get not just one but hopefully two or three more medals to add to his list of his long list of medals the last couple of games. But just stay focused and stay you know, stay focused on the task at hand and hes going to do well, i know it. And, of course, ted ligety skiing on friday, as well. By the way, i need to thank you, lindsey, you made fun of my hat the other day and that prompted a lot of emails where people agreed with you and said it was the worst hat ever. Ive now dedicated myself to finding better hats to impress you. And i have one, i think, today that is going to go a long way to working in that area. I was going to say, he has at least one super fan right there. 10yearold ben hughes, diagnosed with leukemia four years ago. Hes now cancerfree after years of treatment. So on tuesday, ben got to see his hero in action here in sochi thanks to make a wish. Shaun even jumped over the barrier to greet ben after the qualifying round. Bens here along with his parents and his brother will. Hi, guys. And he jumped over the barrier and came right over to say hi to you. What was that like . Oh, it was awesome. I cant believe it. What did you say to him . I just said hi. And shaun whites been your favorite for a really long time, right . Yeah. It wasnt expected youd get to meet him. You were just there to cheer him on. Yeah. We got there very early. We had a good spot near the press. And he just happened to be very close and someone mentioned ben wanted to meet him. And he hopped right over the fence. Thats so great. Steamy today. I actually started doing wake up with al at 5 00 eastern time and i had this off. Just short sleeves, like you are. Yeah, i was doing hits earlier this morning for morning joe and it was a spring day. Sleeves rolled up, whole thing. You see people actually jumping into the black sea. People like diving in. Its incredible. Its beach weather rather than olympic weather, olympic Winter Weather. Look at that. Oh, yeah. There you go. Looks really nice there. Its rocky beaches here. People do not realize that. Its all rocky beaches. Obviously, some people dont have mirrors in russia. Theyre very confident. Size too small. Its okay. Wow. Me, you go with the big boxer bathing suit. Like a board short . Exactly. As much coverage here, ive noticed, the bigger the guy, the smaller the suit. Have you seen that . Yes. You notice that, and its like, wow. The thing is, it gets kind of lost. Yeah. Its kind of like when Peter Griffin goes naked on family guy. Oh, my gosh. Thanks. Lets try to find this. She had an appropriate bathing suit. Shes like covered. Well, were basking in spring weather here. Obviously were thinking about all of you back home. Weather, al, is just ugly. And this is historic. It is. Weather channels named it pax. And this thing is going to move up the coast. Right now, were officially in an ice storm in atlanta. Theyve got about 1 3 inch of ice, Power Outages, 40,000 people in just in georgia alone, about 22,000 people in South Carolina. Six people have been killed from texas to mississippi. And sadly, thats probably going to increase as this goes on. Over 2,700 flights have been canceled. And as this makes its way north and colder air filters in, were going to be seen going from 1 to 2 inches of ice to the southeast and then eventually makes its way up the coast, kind of becomes a classic noreaster. And depending on the path, some areas from washington north, foot of snow. Wow. Overnight into tomorrow . Big night. A lot of eyes on atlanta, as well. Given two weeks ago, that ugly situation. Not prepared for the storm. But they have begun. Theyve closed schools, governments have shut down. Businesses are closed. You look at the live pictures of like i75, 85, 285, they are relatively empty. Theyre ghost towns. Lesson learned, right. People have learned that lesson. The governor and the mayor, governor of georgia, mayor of atlanta announcing measures two days ago. Yeah. Started treating the roads yesterday. Were watching it all for you. Als got it covered as he always does. Here in sochi, competition wise, twotime Gold Medalist snowboarder shaun white, the legend himself, failed to medal on tuesday. He finished fourth in the halfpipe as you may have heard. Earlier this morning, matt did ask shaun whether he expects to return to competition in the olympics four years from now in south korea. Im doing the math, youll be 31 years old when the games in south korea roll around. Is there a chance you could come back and go out on top . I think so. I think so. Need everybody now more than ever. Thank you, guys. He was great to come by. Clearly, hes so disappointed. Remember, he gave up the freestyle. All he did was focus on the halfpipe and didnt have the night he wanted to have. So one slot out of medal contention. Unfortunately for the americans. There were some great competitors out there, though. But i have a feeling we will see him out there again in south korea. Especially, when you look at a guy like tony hawk still out there competing and shaun white in great shape. And as long as hes got that competitive fire, hell be back. He has a rock band. How does a guy have a rock band, design clothing like he does and still do what he does on the ha halfpipe . Hes going out on tour after this. The band. Hes a cool guy and nice guy, too. Great we had him here just talking to a young kid who had cancer who, you know, made his day last night to be able to see ben, who was here, make a wish. We havent seen the end of shaun white one way or another. Another american hero, erin hamlin made history in the womens luge on tuesday becoming the First American ever to win a singles luge medal. Comes from a tiny town in new york. Remson, new york. The entire town rooting for her. Savannah asked her earlier this morning what it felt like to make history. Pretty surreal. It was a pretty crazy two days, and it felt great. And im really happy i was able to do it, obviously. And its crazy to think about it. Coming into the games thinking im going to go and make history. I just wanted to have four solid runs and really enjoy myself and kind of soak it all in. Its my third games. So, you know, ive been before and i think that helps, but it was a lot of fun. In the 50 years that, you know, theyve been competing in that sport, no american man or woman has won. So to finally be able to take home a medal in the luge. Part of history. Its incredible. Those are the olympic stories you love. Whole town in new york rooting for one person and she delivers on it. I bet theyll have a parade for her when she gets home. They had one before she left. Key to the city, you know. The ability to go ransack homes. Thats usually what happens with a medal. You get to go into anybodys home you want and pick out stuff. I didnt think absolutely. Fascinating trivia. Its in the bylaws, actually. Love this story, this is truly the olympic spirit. A canadian coachs act of kindness in crosscountry skiing has people talking. He jumped to the aid of a russian skier who was laboring to finish the mens sprint race on a broken ski. He was going to try to finish on the broken one. Watch the coach come in and save the day, giving the russian skier a brand new ski. The coach said it was like watching an animal stuck in a trap. You cant just sit there and do nothing about it. Good for him. And when he finished, everybody at the finish line, they were cheering him on and clapping for him. Thats the olympic spirit. Thats sportsmanship right there. You dont see that a lot. And russian jumping in to or canadian helping the russian, amazing. Good on you, coach. Well done. Medal count right now, norway leading with 12 medals overall. Norway leads. Theyre good at these winter games. Canada has nine, netherlands has eight and United States in fourth place with seven total medals, two of them gold. A lot more competition to come. Yeah. United states has plenty of time. Weve been having a great time here in sochi, right . Whats been the highlight so far . Youve been riding around trying curling out. Yeah. I think hanging out with the Norwegian Curling Team was a lot of fun. Not only are they great at what they do, they wear the pants and theyre hilarious. They have honed the act. If they ever give up, you know, curling, they can take this thing on the road to vegas. Theyre very funny. They are good guys. And youve mostly been beaten with a branch for the most part. Eucalyptus branch. Its called the bathhouse up in the mountains. Youre in this hut. Looks like you expect gandolf to come out. Looks amazing. Its part of the whole thing. And theyre whacking you with these eucalyptuses that are steaming hot. I loved it. Matt, on the other hand, has a rash on his back. Its pretty grim. Matt was beaten silly. Oh, yeah. Hes hes going, ow. And im thinking hes hamming it up for the cameras, and we got back to the hotel and i look at his back and ive like, oh, ive seen tartar that looks better than that. Thats raw. Yow. The russians, they used to put that raw meat under the saddle to kind of, you know, just tenderize. Thats what matts back looks like. He was ridden hard and put down wet. So you came back and you said your shoulders my shoulders feel fantastic. My man ivan took care of me. Oh, boy, did he. Youre going to find yourself a good bathhouse. There are a couple in new york. Thats another story. Hey, theres a great story back home we wanted to tell you about. This is so cool. A teenage boy writing a heartfelt message in the snow to his sick mother. 14yearold william hart, his mother is ill, was visiting his mother at the Medical Center in chicago. Shes been diagnosed with leukemia. Her hospital window looks down on to the hospital parking garage. So will and his dad go out and write the words in the snow. Hi mom with a smiley face. He told her to look out the window where he stood waving in the middle of the snow. Later, will and the other family members returned to add a message to all the patients at the hospital saying god bless you. Oh, my gosh. They said they looked back and saw faces in windows, patients, nurses, doctors all looking out. Amazing. Really cool story out of chicago. Thoughtful kid. So sweet. Good man. Al, youve got a lot to talk about on the weather front. Lets start it off, show you whats going on. We have watches, warnings advisories up and down the eastern coast. Atlanta to charleston, youre in an ice storm warning. This is bad news, friends. And all the way up into new england, weve got winter storm warnings and Winter Weather advisories and watches. Heres what happens. You see that yellow, thats the intensity of the storm. Were looking at thunderstorms of pink and purple up to the north. Thats ice and then snow to the north of that. Northeast winds come whipping around that High Pressure system. They bank up that freezing air banks up against the appalachian mountains. So its got nowhere to go. The mountains trap that cold air. And as the rain falls, it freezes and creates ice. Look at the accumulations were expecting over the next 24 hours. Atlanta, about 1 2 inch to almost an inch, augusta, columbia, on into fayetteville, up to 2 inches of ice, widespread Power Outages, and as this system makes its way up the coast, thats the 32degree line, that blue line, low pressure deepens off the coast. Look at the snowfall amounts were looking at. The range of snowfall basically going to be anywhere from about 6 to 12 inches of snow. Look at that. Down through georgia, 9 to 12 inches, 10 to 14 inches as you get into the carolinas. And as we get up into the northeast, lesser amounts, 3 to 6 in boston, maybe 6 to 9 in new york city. Its absolutely incredible. Weve been dreaming about the olympics for so long. Our tenth year skating together, but being here and meeting other team usa athletes has been fantastic. What was that Opening Ceremony like to walk into the stadium and know the whole world was watching you . Incredible. Weve watched so many coverages of the Olympic Games before. Its a dream, to be able to do it as siblings, walk together with our friends and all these people we just met that have worked so hard. Its amazing to be part of the fabric of this olympic story. And were so excited to be here. Thats youre best friends but youre also brother and sister. I know what its like with my sister. I love her to death, but sometimes you got to get on each others nerves. How do you work through that . Best friends. No. Oh, look out. You dont drop her when you have her in the air . You want see your playful side . Yeah, we love sharing our journey. People have literally seen us grow up on the ice and off the ice. So being a part of, you know allowing people to be a part of our journey has really been kind of huge for us. We like to be honest about who we are as people. So the videos are fun. Were both interested in television and film maybe later on in life. So, you know, its just us having fun with our friends. And two years ago, we just started to take a camera out and film it. Its all of what we do on a regular basis anyway. And so we like kind of creating these stories and showing them and the reception has been terrific. Max was diagnosed with cancer and lucky enough to beat it. But his fight didnt stop there. Well, with the support of his family, max set out to make things easier for other kids and parents going through the same thing. The first time i laid eyes on max, it was absolutely amazing. At 5 pounds 3 ounces, max was born a happy, healthy baby. As a toddler, he was always running around like a little weeble wobble, always smiling and laughing. But some of those smiles would soon fade. In april of 2007, i took my boys down to the playground. Max ran around the bases and when he hit first, he fell, and then he cried out in excruciating pain. In the days following that fall, maxs family knew something wasnt right. When i walked into the hospital and saw the xray of maxs bone hanging on the wall, i knew that something was wrong. No one was prepared for what came next. The doctor said i had cancer. Max was diagnosed with cancer the day before his 4th birthday. I didnt really know what was happening or going on. Life as we know it can change instantaneously and without warning. Youre going to what . What i do remember is i was always tired and had fevers and was usually waking up in the middle of the night to vomit. When max was first diagnosed with cancer, that night i remember taking a pledge. I got down on my knee and made a promise to a higher power. Heres maxs first violin. And i said if you can get my son through this, i will dedicate the rest of my life to making an impact in the life of families and their children battling pediatric cancer. Soon after, the Max Cure Foundation was formed. The mission is to identify families who need Financial Assistance and gift cards for life necessities while their child is in treatment. Donating and happy to do it. They do it with a program called dunk your kids. Maxs family collects donated sneakers and sells them to an international recycler. 1 from each pair of resold shoes goes to the Max Cure Foundation. So far, 77 families and 21 hospitals have received help since 2008. Theres no way we couldve done it without the help from others. Families like 11yearold mias. Receiving the gift card helped me to focus more on mia and not worry so much about missing work. I was able to buy deodorant, paper towels, laundry detergent. So it helped tremendously. The Max Cure Foundations symbol is a lion. When i was younger, i had a stuffed animal, the lion, and i used to bring it to the hospital to keep my brave. Thats why our mascot is the lion. And our motto is be brave. The reality of pediatric cancer is while today max is healthy, we dont know what tomorrow will bring. But one thing maxs family can promise is their unyielding pledge to help others. In a perfect world, we would fund the cure to pediatric cancer. There are 13,500 children in this country diagnosed every year. Our goal is to touch each and every one of them and make a positive impact in their lives. And they have started and well on their way. We were barely crossing the bottom the pass days. And on the day of competition, it was rideable, it was good. And, yeah. We all kind of were struggling because we didnt have any practice. And it was like the most important competition. And the weather was really played a part in this in the conditions at the halfpipe. Did you have to adjust your game in a sense to do this . Oh, definitely. I was really surprised following my first qualifying run which was probably the hardest part of my day. One more run and if you screw that one up, youre out, youre not even in finals. I was really nervous there. And, yeah, my game plan was a little bit different than that. From then on, i was pretty building my game up pretty slowly and it worked out. Now, i know that you and shaun white have a friendly rivalry. How do you think hes made you better at doing what you do . Oh, just look at him, you know. Thats pretty much talks for himself. He goes bigger than anyone, more technical than anyone. He tries to be ahead of everyone else. And, i think, that alone is very impressive. And it just motivates you, at least really motivates me. And i guess he made me go out there and try new tricks and, you know, all this. Yeah. Great moment. We showed a picture, shaun comes down, you give him a hug and you wouldnt let him go.
