Todays dylan dreyer is in forest lake, minnesota with more on that, dylan, good morning. Good morning, matt. The snow and the wind here has picked up in forest lake, minnesota. You can see its covering the roads, we have about four inches of snow now on the ground. Were about a half hour north of minneapolis. Winter storm warnings are in effect extending from the Northern Rockies where the heavy snow started yesterday, and it extends all the way into the great lakes. This is the first major snowstorm for this region, and winter is still several weeks away. Now, to put this in perspective for you. The normal snowfall for all of november for this area is about nine inches. From this storm alone we should easily pick up more than a foot of snow. Thats the first two digit snowstorm that this area has seen in about two years. Surprisingly, Minneapolis School district is still open today but there are still plenty of residents well prepared for this storm. They put their snow tires on a little early. They are stocking up on supplies and ready for this storm. Were seeing more and more snow plows come on through. This is just the leading edge of the cold air that is surging into the united states. It is ultimately going to affect 42 states. Oklahoma city, for example, they will top out in mid70s today and by the time we get to the middle of the week temperatures will plummet by about 40 degrees. Here in the upper midwest, today is just day one of perhaps a twoweek stretch of temperatures that will be subfreezing. All of this snow as it accumulates on the ground is going to stick around and not melt any time soon. Matt. Dylan, thank you. Trying to imagine that phone call over the weekend when they said al, you want to go to minnesota . They didnt even know. Unfortunately, dylan is going to be there because at least 60 of flights are canceled already in minneapolis and more on the way. Low pressure, then the cold air, the leading edge of that cold air by afternoon. The heaviest snow in minneapolis on into marquette, michigan. This snowfall is going to come down hard and fast. Were talking in the next 48 hours, upwards of a foot and a half of snow from minneapolis into marquette, more northern you go the worse it gets. One to two inches per hour. This is the leading edge of this cold air coming in here. So ahead of it warmth and moisture, behind it this unseasonably cold air. So, temperatures today, youve got from 20 to 30 degrees below average. Look ahead. Dallas 79. Little rock, 10. Tonight the lows drop down to Single Digits in bismarck, kansas city in the upper 20s, then wednesday the cold air makes its way to lexington, chicago 28, alexandria, 46. Thursday, lexington 29, click, 25. Atlanta 43. And on friday, tallahassee at 43, buffalo, 29. Kansas city, 19. Guys, this cold, cold air does not go anywhere any time soon. The day dominated by talks including a meeting with the president on chinese soil. Key to the trip, reassuring critics who say other crisis like isis and ebola made asia an after thought. Under the new arrangement student and Exchange Visas will be extended to five years, business and tourist visas extended to ten years. Some iraqi officials and media here in iraq citing unnamed sources allegedly close to isis claim that the groups leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was injured by an american air strike over the weekend. However, iraqi officials weve spoken to say they are aware of the reports but cannot confirm them. If it were true that baghdadi were injured or even killed by an air strike it would be a blow to the group. Baghdadi is the man who took al qaeda in iraq and turned it into isis today, the militant organization that controls large parts of iraq and syria. But at this stage, natalie, we cannot verify these reports and are treating them with a degree of skepticism. Richard engel in iraq, thank you. Suicide bomber killed at least 48 people this morning and wounded about 80 at a School Assembly in northeast nigeria. A teacher said the bomber was dressed as a student and that most of the victims were young people. The school is in an area often targeted by rebels notorious for kidnapping of school girls. A prominent minister and his wife among the nine killed when their plane went down on approach to grand bahama island. The jet had taken off from nassau and tried to land. It collided with a construction crane at a shipyard. Pastor myles monroe and his wife were killed. He was a well known author and leadership consultant. New information on the massive recall General Motors ignition switches, the wall street journal saying they ordered switches to fix cobalt and other small cars almost two months before it alerted federal safety regulators to the problem. The parts order puts into question the time table gm gave for its recalls of 2. 5 million vehicles. The switch issue now is linked to 30 deaths. Reporter well, there was a time when it might have been a nonstarter to have a bush on the ticket. I dont think it has anything to do with me. I think it really has to do about him. This man has got a vision and can articulate it. Hes good. Really good. And he also can give a speech, complete speech, in spanish. You know, my vocabulary is about 50 words. When you look at isis and the threat now, do you think that its as dangerous, as potent, as pre9 11 al qaeda . Or is it more so . I think its somewhat theyre different theyre not in different in the sense theyre willing to murder innocents and ideology. Now weve got beheadings by these thugs over there. And im confident they love to inflict great damage on the country. Reporter well organized and well funded. Al qaeda was pretty well funded for a while, but they got crushed. Reporter you say right out front, this is a love story. I do. I couldnt write an objective analysis of george bush. My heart overflows with great affection for him. Reporter what you dont do in this book is put yourself on the couch. Reporter it is on the couch, its just not what the psychobabilists assume. People have trouble understanding that i wasnt on the phone to him on a regular basis saying what next . What do i do . Reporter do you feel when you were president that he ever wished you would call . No. I used to get calls from mother saying call your father. It reminded me of my time when he was president. I was miserable at times when they would criticize my dad. Reporter was any part of writing this for him because you want to make sure that his presidency gets the respect it deserves . Sure, absolutely. He was overshadowed by a very transformative president , ronald reagan. But eventually historians would realize he was a great oneterm president. Reporter for the first time the book 41 reveals the extent to which george bush grieved the second term he never got and contains the revelation that he considered not running for reelection at all. It was a shocking conversation. He and i were fishing out there. And he said, im thinking about not running again. I said, wow. Why . Rsh bush said his father was deeply disturbed his son, neil, had been swept into the savings loan scandal of the 80s. I think i said dad, youve got a lot left to do. Reporter he lovingly traces his fathers footsteps, the navy, the Texas Oil Fields and launching a political career that took him to congress, the u. N. , the cia and ultimately the white house. I, George Herbert walker bush. Reporter but for the fact he wasnt reelected, you and your brother may not have run for governor yourselves. It would have been difficult to spend most of my time answering questions. Reporter you never really asked your father whether you should run for president. Right. I didnt. Reporter why didnt you . Because his answer would have been, you know, if you run, im for you. Reporter do you think you sought his approval through your life . Probably. Yeah, i think we all do as children. If you admire somebody, you do in a way. Reporter though he jumped out of a helicopter five months ago to mark his 90th birthday, the family came close to losing george bush in 2012 after a bout with pneumonia. He came very close to death. He did, yeah. Reporter do you think your dad is at peace . I do think hes at peace. You know, ill probably be in the corner drooling, and there he is, sweetnatured to everybody. Reporter so this is where the magic happens . President bush 43 seems equally at peace, relishing his new title, grandfather and artist. You know, i really dont miss power and fame. Reporter you talked about in the book the letdown that any president feels. Yeah, yeah. Reporter having left office. Thats right. Reporter did you experience that . Sure. Oh, yeah. Reporter what was that like . The first shocking experience was that i didnt have any responsibilities. But, you know, then you kind of get the sense of kind of longing to make sure that, you know, you remain stimulated. And paintings help fill that void. Reporter one of his most cherished pieces is this neverbeforeseen portrait of father and son. What was, in your mind and in your heart as you painted it . Well, i was very proud to be standing next to a man i admire greatly. The first thing i wanted to make sure was i got the noses right. But, you know, i tried to paint a gentle soul, and i did. As for me, i kind of bumbled through it. Reporter you and your father have charted a very similar course. Was there ever a time when you feel like you were actively rebelling . Love kind of binds you. Theres no need to rebel if you feel love. But, you know, i am different than he is. When i moved to midland, i was single and drinking pretty hard. Reporter did he ever pull you aside and say, get it together . No, but there was a moment when i got into Harvard Business school. He said one thing, and that was it. He said, you ought to think about it. It will open up new horizons. And it was very sage advice. And i went. And you know what . It opened up new horizons. Reporter father knows best. Father knows best, yeah. Inside that painting studio, you see one thing, he is driven about painting and quite prolific. A lot of paintings there. Yeah. And some of the letters that his dad has written to him over the years are so emotional. They really are. They are. And he talked about his dads health. Now he said his dad is very quiet now but peaceful, joyful and a lot of this book was written based on other peoples memories and those letters. Im following the ambulance to make sure that the boy is taken good care of. Reporter over the partially paved and unmarked streets of monrovias slums, miler, a School Administrator who now has an ambulance group, searches for the child. The boy turns out to be a girl. Sara with symptoms of ebola. Ebola killed saras father and sister last month. It is too much for her grandmother. There used to be ten people going in the ambulance at a time. Even though the numbers are going down, its like little 10yearold sara thats going in the ambulance. Reporter one of hundreds of children miler has helped since ebola closed the schools here, including the more than me Girls Academy she founded. You dont have to be afraid. We care a lot about you. Reporter miler goes door to door bringing supplies. This house has six children who lost their parents to ebola. Youre not alone. Ill come and visit you, too. A number they expect will go much higher. We were just saying, can you imagine a child sick and youre not able to to comfort them. How do you stop yourself from doing it . And its really you have to because you could spread the disease. Its very difficult. So she said shes there and she says she comforts them and lets them cry and sometimes cries with them. About the hour before i go to sleep, i put music on. I am guilty of looking at the smartphone. It has to be pitch black. And silent, like a ticking clock makes me cuckoo. When im tired and my head hits the pillow, i am out. I usually start on my back. And i have this weird habit. I sleep with my arm over my head. I think to start, i sleep on my side. Im definitely a side sleeper. I think my Natural Inclination is to sleep on my side. I had a real snoring problem. I have sleep apnea when i was heavier. I dont snore now. There are vicious rumors going around in my household that i snore. And on occasion, i will admit that i have kind of awakened myself with kind of a little snore. I do not snore. I know i dont snore. Joe, you know i dont snore. I do not snore. Big drooler. I really drool. Sleep is not what it used to be since i had little darling, adorable vail. She wakes up every, i would say, three hours or so. At midnight, you hear their footsteps coming into the room. And theyll come to the side of the bed. And theyll say, i had a bad dream or can i sleep with you guys . If theres something on my mind, then i will wake up. Im a pretty sound sleeper although im a pretty sound sleeper of a certain age. I have a natural alarm clock. Every morning for the last 20plus years, my alarm has gone off at 4 10. Theres no way to describe it other than early. I wake up at 3 00 in the morning. And im not going to lie. The alarm hurts. I wake up at 4 05 because 4 00 is too early. 4 05 is just right. During the week, i wake up at 3 05 because 3 00 a. M. Seems too early. Better than. Well, we all know the obvious answer to that question. Sleep is better than id rather go have a great time with annette and the kids and forgo a few hours of sleep. But its high on the list. I dont put it up there as, you know, a great meal or a great vacation. Good nights sleep is better than name it. Its great. I might go to sleep right now. Nighty night. We all need to sleep more good night, everybody for our series, we try some of the most current techniques for tracking sleep. And were going to share the results throughout the week. I wore an actography watch, which is something that monitors movement and rest. Savannah did a sleepiness test to see how rested she is since she had a little baby. Al tried an athome sleep device to monitor his sleep. And natalie used a portable sleep lab to record whether she has sleep apnea. This is good foreasuring patterns of sleep over time. So if your sleep cycle it off, it will show up. Its a motion detector. So what about the nights i lie in bed, im wide awake but motionless . Thats going to think im sleeping, isnt it . You have to be really a guru in meditation or something because you always have some movement if youre awake. Doctor, lets talk about this. 46 of people, not surprisingly, said they dont get enough sleep. The reasons, though, are varied. What impact does not getting enough sleep have on our lives . Physically and emotionally . It can cause a number of diseases, dementia, depression, diabetes, heart disease. We all have our sleepless nights from time to time, but over a long period of time, we can have illness as well. So once we tracked my sleeping habits with this, does it tell me how to a, get to bed easier or stay aleap easier . It doesnt really tell you how to do that, but you actually do a pretty good job. You have regular sleep times. The one thing you do do, like many people, you sleep in when you dont have to get up early. Right. But i also wake up in the middle of the night. Thats something that men of my age have happen a lot. Al mentioned that. So the trick for me is what do i do to get back to sleep once ive gotten up in the middle of the night . Well, if you cant fall back asleep within 30 minutes, its time to shift gears. And i joke that it makes us sharpen our math skills. If we fall asleep right at this moment, we calculate it will be 3 hours and 37 minutes. Instead what we need to do is get out of bed, keep our lights dim, do some reading. If you have a problem thats bothering you, write it down. Put it in a drawer and close it. Deal with it in the morning time. People tend to have set sleeping patterns. You just talked about that. Is it possible to reset your sleep clock . Oh, sure. But it takes time. You know, its jet lag. Were all familiar with that. The weekend thing we call social jet lag. So many people stay up two hours later on the weekend. But guess what happens sunday night . You cant get to sleep. Right, exactly. You can have this back. I never want to see that again. It is the most common form of cancer among men in america and the second deadliest. One in seven men will be diagnosed with it. And nearly 30,000 will die from it this year alone. Dr. Mehmet oz is host of the dr. Oz show and the new own show, surgeon oz. Good to see you. Surgeon oz, dr. Oz, good to see you. We talk about Prostate Cancer, somethinging didded in older men. I think the average age of diagnosis, 66 . It is. Remember that 90 of men, if they live to age 90, will have Prostate Cancer. The question is not whether Prostate Cancer is a problem. Of course it is. But will it kill you . Probably not. The vast majority of people die with it. The big question is what should you do to identify which ones are dangerous . Basically, a lot of people get diagnosed with this and then they look at their doctor and say i didnt feel any symptoms. Is that normally the case . Thats the norm. It does not usually give you symptoms. Put the papers down for one second. I want you to do something you may not have done before. Touch the prostate. This is a human prostate. This is the bladder. At the bottom of the bladder, right there, you hold it like that in your fingers. That is the prostate right there. See that little round thing . Right. Is this a normal prostate or an enlarged prostate . Thats a normal prostate. This, my friend, is an enlarged prostate. You see how big that is . Right. Feel how smooth that is in there. Right. And then feel this and describe that to everybody. Thats got little nodules. Exactly. On it. Prostate cancer. The nodules that doctors feel for when they do a rectal exam are what you just felt right there. That little nodule is what we look for. The key question is should you get a rectal exam . Should you get a blood test to check your psa, one of the tests we use to identify it. Lets start with the blood test. You just mentioned its a psa. Most men over a certain age get that. If the results of that come back in the okay range, do you need to go on and get this other test . You dont need to do anything else if the psa tests are low. Generally speaking, we dont use the psa test correctly. Most people think, well, the psa tests tells me if i have cancer, it does not. It tells you if you have inflammation of the prostate. Get the test, but dont rush off to get the biopsy or the surgery because you get treated when you shouldnt. The digital rectal exam which al and i did live on the air last year. Under what circumstances should you say a guy should definitely go get that test . Its free, not that invasive, as you experienced personally. Men over 50 should get a digital rectal exam. If you have a history, everything gets pushed early. Not someone who has Prostate Cancer but someone young, under the age of 60, 65 who got Prostate Cancer. Just because you have an enlarged prostate, does not mean you have Prostate Cancer. If you have to get up and urinate when you didnt as a child, thats why you have to wake up because your prostate isnt letting all the urine out. The big story is, what are you going to do about it . Lifestyle changes that work for the heart work for the prostate. They really are connected. We didnt realize this, but you can reverse Prostate Cancer. What are the key tips . Tomatoes work, in countries they eat a lot of soy and less instances of Prostate Cancer and the omega fat from fish is much better and the big secret, nuts. Her father, john, directed more than 40 films. Well, now miss huston is opening up about it in her new book, second memoir called watch me. Of course weve been doing that for many years. Good morning. Good to see you. Good morning. Good to see you. We know youve had an interesting life when you have not one but two memoirs. You had your early years in the first memoir. And this is your life in hollywood. It sounds like a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun. Ill admit it. You talk a lot about actually your relationships. Was there anything that was hard to kind of delve into and relive . Well, actually, the nature of writing a book is that the hard things are trying to find the proper adjectives for something rather than retelling a story that might have been difficult or painful at the time. I found that the writing process actually superseded, you know, the facts of life. Jack nicholson, of course, was your paramour for, i think, 15, 17 years. 17 years. You really are very open in the book about that relationship. And he was kind of a bad boy in hollywood. Well, thats not big news. I know, but there you were right next to him. How did you handle that, and what was the process of writing about it like . Well, i sort of handled it on a daytoday basis. And sometimes i didnt handle it so well at the time. Writing about it actually was quite cathartic. And i showed him the book before it went to publication. So i got his stamp of approval. Not that i needed it, but it was nice to have. You write that looking back on it now, you think there were moments where i dont know if denial is the word youd use, but there were times where you felt like denial is not a where maybe you should have known what he was up to. I knew what he was up to, but, you know, the thing about being with somebody whos that much in the public eye and who is that charming and is that charismatic is that you kind of have to go along with the program. Its not like youre going to break all those habits immediately. This book is dishy. Its interesting. It describes a hollywood that seems very exciting. You have a lot of tales to tell. One of them, though, was disturbing. You tell a story about ryan oneal who you briefly dated. And you tell about a night where he was, according to you, physically violent with you. Well, its my feeling that any man who lifts a hand against a woman deserves to be outed. So ill sort of leave it at that. He had no comment, of course. But you left the relationship right after that, you said. Yes. Yeah. You also talk about Roman Polanski who is a good friend. Talk about being in a strange place at a strange time. You happened to be at his house that day when the young woman who he was later charged with statutory rape for was actually right there. Of course, you didnt see anything, but you realized later what had happened . Well, actually, it was at jacks house. It wasnt at romans house. But yes, you know, so far as im concerned, whatever happened is his business. And i wasnt there for any untoward behavior. I can say that with some happiness. Did you enjoy writing the book and relivinthis stuff . Yes, i did. It was, as i say, it was a cathartic process. Its good to relive certain things because you get a perspective. I had a good time because i was also here working on smash at the time. You know, three days intensive work on smash, and then the rest of the time i gave over to writing the book. It was a good discipline. Theres a reason the book is called watch me. I really like it. Can you tell people why you gave it that title . Well, it was, first of all, actually my book agent gave me the title. Im very grateful to him, bill craig. It was an incident where i was at a dinner party at someones house. And tony richardson, who is a great english director, said oh, poor little you. Youre never going to do anything with your life, you know. So much talent. So lite to show for it. And i thought, hmm. We also need to remember their families who are sometimes overlooked but in many ways making sacrifices, too. They were so much alike in so many ways. Reporter comrades and best friends, now side by side at Arlington National cemetery. They pushed each other a lot to be better. Reporter navy s. E. A. L. Brendan luney and Travis Mannion were roommates at the u. S. Naval academy. They became inseparable, two peas in a pod. Travis was sent off to serve in iraq. There he was tragically cut down by a sniper in 2007. His best friend was understandably devastated. He was a great friend and i miss him. Reporter three years later, he, too, was killed in a Helicopter Crash in afghanistan. Retired marine colonel tom mannion is traviss father. He considers the young men brothers forever. Its the title of his book, a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. They were willing to take whatever risk there was out there to go forward and make a difference. Reporter his message is a simple one. The value of bravery and the type of service that inspires all of us to be just a little more selfless. Brotherhood, sacrifice, love of country. Reporter and when it comes to brotherhood, its personal. Because my own family is now embarking on a journey, and my mom is taking it a day at a time. No matter what i do, where i go, i have got it on my mind 24 hours a day. Reporter will and john, my two brothers and my moms two boys are Naval Academy grads preparing to fly to serve and to face danger head on. Our country is experiencing some frightening times. And they have theyre in it. Theyre in it to serve. These guys are doing what they feel is best. And you have to have faith. This country has become so divided. And i look at our men and women in the military. And they are not going to ask what party their president is. They are going to serve their country regardless. Reporter do you worry they wont come back at all . You know, i have a peace about it. I really do. When john left, and with will, too, i had, you know, those moments that you do as parents where you turn to faith and kind of think, how do i get through this . Reporter my brothers fiancee, morgan, is also learning to adapt. It really makes you cherish every single moment you have together. Appreciate life and what its about and relationships and family. It gives me strength to know that they are doing what they feel in their hearts. It also gives me great confidence in this great country and the men and women that we have serving. They are extraordinary men and women, and we should be very, very proud. You know, one thing i think people love about you is that even though you interview all these celebrities and you know all these people, like you just still seem like a superfan. Yes. Thats my entry point. I love pop culture, which is why i love the warhol diaries. Its like this pop culture time capsule. I love pop culture, and i am a fan of everything. Im a celebrant.
