The south has also seen a little bit of snowfall, memphis and little rock. Thankfully in atlanta we do not expect a repeat of what we saw last winter when two or three inches of snow and ice brought this city to a standstill. No precipitation is forecast until sunday. When you took that shot what was going through your mind. This wasnt my first mission. Probably 400 plus. I took the shot that was my primary threat. I went to the secary threat, clear the room and make sure the other two in the room were properly taken care of. In retrospect now, take a moment back and reflect on it. How did he seem to you . Did he seem in those moments in the dark defiant, aggressive, resigned . All he seemed to me was he was not surrendering. I cant say what he was thinking. Had he surrendered we would have taken him. He could have been a lot of intelligence, obviously. He was not surrendering and he was a threat. You stood over him and watched him breathe his last breath. I did see that, yes. Could you describe that moment . Again, it was sort of surreal, another target we did. Not the most difficult target wed ever done. Ive seen that before. I saw it again. We havent really seen this side of things, the analysts and langley and how theyre responsible for sort of sifting through all the intel thats brought to them by the cia operatives and the assets out in the field. And they have to, you know, sift through tons and tons and tons of intelligence to narrow down the most critical threats and whats real and whats not and whats just chatter and whats actionable. So i kind of wanted to show that vibe and it sort of has a bit of a, like i hate comparing things to things, but its sort of like newsroomy meets west wingy, meets homeland. Im in. You had me at homeland. And you know, perhaps these Strong Female characters, not just your character, but the president of the United States is played by Alfre Woodward. The fact that the female is kind of besides the point, theyre just good at their job. Exactly. And thats what was really important to me about it. New numbers out this morning, and they are staggering. Take a look over here. Because of Drowsy Driving, 100,000 Car Accidents every year. 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 deaths, all caused by Drowsy Driving. So we set up an extreme experiment, even perhaps more extreme than rokerthon, because i put myself to the test. 30 hours awake, a little less than roker, no sleep, no caffeine, but what would happen behind the wheel . My eyes may be open, but doctors say im essentially asleep right now, swerving behind the wheel of a car, all the effects of drowsiness. A stress on the body that can have deadly effect. In june, a driver for walmart awake for more than 24 hours, police say, struck a car carrying actor tracy morgan, seriously injuring him and killing his close friend. And it can happen to anyone. Nicole was a very bright, cheerful young lady. Reporter at only 18 years old, nicole lee had her whole life in front of her. My sister was an amazing young woman, full of life, and she was taken from us instantaneously. Reporter the Virginia Tech freshman was returning from a long day of skiing. Her friend fell asleep behind the wheel. There were no skid marks or braking. He hit a tree on my sisters side of the car at full speed. Reporter to show you just how dangerous it can be, we set up a test at the skid harbor driving school in connecticut. Hi, jeff, how you doing . What are we doing today . Take you through some technical obstacle courses and see how you drive. Reporter its the middle of the afternoon, im wide awake and it shows, pulling off tight turns. Good, nice and smooth. Tired, but actually, i feel fine. I feel like this is the kind of situation that a lot of people drive in. Maybe i could too. Remember, any of the cones we hit, theyre considered a crash. A little jerky. Ali little bit. Sorry. This time, i failed my driving test, again and again, and again. Ugh, its frustrating. Hes struggling. Dr. Charles sizeler of bostons brigham and Womens Hospital is one of the countrys leading experts on sleep. He analyzed our video for signs of trouble. Its a dramatic distance. Hes certainly impaired and struggling to stay awake and at any moment could lose that struggle. Reporter just a few experts of what experts call microsleep could be the difference between life and death. Most people dont realize that part of the brain can be asleep while another part of the brain is awake. So you may be able to keep your foot full throttle on the accelerator and yet not have the judgment area of the brain engaged. Reporter for my final test, i began to drive for several miles, simulating a long highway trip, the deadliest for most drowsy drivers. My eyes are having a hard time focusing. Thats when the instructor surprised me with an unexpected line of cones right in my path. All of a sudden it happened, huh . That could have been an accident. That could have been a car, that could have been a person, its scary. We easily could have stopped, but by the time that jeff put it together, it was too late. Doctors say losing sleep for one night is the equivalent of being legally drunk. And heres a tip there experts. The best indicator that youre about to fall asleep behind the wheel is falling asleep behind the wheel. Many of us, at least, have had that moment where you feel yourself nodding off and you jolt awake. You get that false sense of security that once your adrenaline is going, youre safe to drive, but doctors say thats the number one indicator that you will fall asleep again and nod off within a couple of minutes. Before we talk to you, al, physically, right now, youve been up well over 34 hours. How do you feel . I dont feel that tired, but i actually tried to sleep, catch up on sleep earlier in the week. But i know you cant doctor, i mean, after 34 hours like this. What would you expect to see in al . Good morning. Congratulations for all your efforts and getting this record. Now your brain and body may not feel as rested because over this whole period of time and lacking sleep your brain energy has been drained. So the brain processing is speed and all the energy that goes through the body and really circulates through the organs is being depleted. Youre going to feel very tired and youre going to know some changes you may feel edgy or irritable and your appetite will definitely change because the brain is looking for highenergy foods, lets say. An alertness test. You did one before al started this 34hour marathon and then after. How big was the difference . It was very interesting because al performed super well on the test. We think he might be superman. After or before . Both. Actually. Very mild difference on his case. So, this test is used during research. Basically what we do is have the coordination in the Response Time and als Response Time was pretty impressive. Better than most of the High School Students we monitored. We know hes superman. Honestly, i think maybe the super bowl was our first date. I definitely fell in love with him there. We may have lost the game, but i gained a best friend. Coming up next, coping with the cold weather, what that means for your skin. First, this is today on nbc. Well, snow and chilly temperatures are gripping the country, for many that means winter skin problems. Dr. Debora is a new york dermatologist. Dr. Wattenberg, perfect time to see you. Well start with the face. What can we do . You know the skin gets dry and itchy when the winter sets in . With the lack of humidity, we lose a lot of moisture in our skin. When you start with the face, what you want to do is change up some of your products. You want to gently exfoliate using something soft like a wash cloth and change to a soapless cleanser. All these products can be found in the drugstore. And if you take a little bit of this cetaphil cleanser and use the wash cloth to gently exfoliate and move on to applying a moisturizer, something that contains an spf, ceramide, a moisturizer. What about the lips . If you take a toothbrush and lightly exfoliate rub a dry toothbrush on your lip . Or even with a little bit of water. And apply some aquaphor or neutrogena lip balm, something to hydrate the lip and make it feel better. What about that lovely rudolph nose some of us get . You come in from the winter, your nose dilates and the blood rushes to it. So take a little bit of neosporin or any antibiotic ointment, put a little bit on your hand, and apply a little bit of cortizone, an antiinflammatory, mix these together, and apply it on to that red area on your nose, youll see a big difference. What about your hands and feet . The hands and feet are going to crack and get fissured and irritated. Take your hand and soak it in water with a little bit of oil, take it out and pat dry, and you apply a moisturizer. And youre going to look for something that says its a hand cream or cuticle cream and apply it on there. And the reason to use this is its rich in hyaluronic acids, theres more emollients and oils, and take some saran wrap or any plastic wrap and then the gloves, the glove is key, put a glove on to your hand and that will make a huge difference. What about the feet real quick . If you want to improve the feet, do the same thing as your hand, but exfoliate, get rid of the dry, dead skin, apply something with lactic acid and put a sock over it to put the moisture in. Sometimes right under your nose, like you said, it will ma in your garden, your pantry, it takes great things you can find every day tell me about the centerpiece. I love to please all the senses. Maybe not just the flowers that smell good, but these oranges, with cloves. The scent is amazing. Thats a beautiful idea. It is a beautiful token. So you can place one at each place setting and your friends can take it home, hang it on their tree, door knob, lovely reminder. Some people have family members that would eat it. Or you can eat it. Slice it with a knife. The cake in the middle is gorgeous. Dessert is always the after thought. Why not make it the forefront . This is a delicious cake right here, and it has festooned perfectly for the holidays. Since were continuing with the orange theme, with the color, and flavor as well, we add citrus ribbons here of orange, wide ones, thinner one and decorate it with pecans, some say pecans down south, pecans is another thing. So we have walnuts and toasted pumpkin seeds on there as well. Your dessert is your centerpiece. The kids going for that, you know what i mean . They would stick their fingers in it. You got a cake, a cake stand, using a cake stand to raise this up off the table, so they can see it. I like the flat the table setting. To get a straight a, to setting tables, you got to know one, two, three. Can you set a table setting . Do you know forks, knives and spoons . Yes, we were very disciplined that way. Thats all i know. Forks have four letters, and knife and spoon has five letters. Thats how i remember it. Looking into the garden, one thing you like to do in the south, if we use magnolia, we would use here it is as our table setting, the place mats here. What ive done is i just used them and you set them at a clocklike pattern and place your dinner plate on top. We have the guest favors here. If it is in the south, we monogram it. Here we go. These are basic white napkins and to give them a fresh spin, put a fun color that dark brown looks so good. I love not putting a tablecloth over the whole table. It is nice to see the wood with the burlap kind of runner. But then it is okay to mix silver in there, and invite generations to the table. Use your mamas silver, mimis silver. Whether it is, you know, food, flowers, whatever, the fruit, just scattered throughout. You can take walnuts and pecans, scatter them as well. Great, great. Thank you so much. You were terrific.
