Yeah, whats the fastest lane to the bay bridge toll plaza. Alexis smith f as you know the commute across the bay bridge one of the worst commutes in the nation. It is so slow. It really is. Yeah, so abc 7 morning traffic reporter, alexis smith and sky seven conducted the bay bridge time challenge during a morning commute. Lots see which lane won. Fast track or cash . It is a mindnumbing crawl to get to the bay bridge toll plaza in the morning. Bumpertobumper. Drivers weave in and out of traffic. 15 minute drive can take an hour. All of this, solid white lines. Everyone cutting each other off. Getting worse. Fast track lane is backed up more than the cash lane. Wanted to know what is happening on the bay bridge commute. I got in sky seven for a view. All the lanes on the bridge take fast track. Some accept cash too. Some times those cash lanes seem shorter. But which is really faster . We did a comparison and two abc 7 cars with cameras and put 7s on the roof. Started our stop watch from emoryville to see how long it takes to get through the toll plaza. Both left at the same time. The blue seven is going through the cash lanes. We have got the red seven going through the fast track lanes. Minutes in. So far looks like cash is moving faster. Whats keeping the red seven . Fast track car behind . It had to cross over the cash lanes to get into the fast track only lanes in the center. Trying to get over. Oh. Our cash cars lead doesnt last long. It looks like, we have got the fast track car, the red 7. Actually catching up. Just passing the blue. The cash car. Nearly 35 minutes into our commute, traffic really slows down. And its the drivers in the cash lanes creating the problem. We have seen car after car. Leave the cash lanes. And merge to the right. Cutting off the fast track only lanes. Our cash driver is also feeling the pinch. So he is actually getting cut off in the cash lanes. Because these guys are trying to get into the fast track. So affecting the cash driver too. By the time our challenge is over. Fast track lane is five minutes faster than the cash lane. Time savings, but man not as much as you think. That is consistent with what we found over the years. John goodwin with the transportation commission. Evidently. There are some folks who seem to believe their time is more valuable than others. He says those drivers who cut over at the last minute play a big part in slowing down traffic. There is no Real Advantage gained by the folks that, we call them the dive bombers. Mtc says it tried to prevent that by installing flexible pileons. But those dive bombers run them over. Goodwin says considerate drivers would go a long way in speeding up traffic. The commission is looking at ways to eliminate the cash option from the bridge to speed things up. The Golden Gate Bridge stopped taking cash tolls in 2013. Since then, the flow of traffic on the bridge has improved. There is no set date for when the bay bridge might stop taking cash. There are, a number of thing that we need to do because the traffic volumes are so much greater on the bay bridge. In the meantime, drivers are looking for relief and leaving earlier wont help them. The mtc says the busiest time on the bay bridge is now between 5 00 and 6 00 a. M. 75 increase since 2010. In sky 7. Alexis smith. Abc 7 news. 5 and 6 00 a. M. Wow. I know.
