Three other women and a 3year old girl were also in the car at the time. Crash. Now, what got that chase started, police say the same car was used as a weapon against an Oakland Police officer. That officer was answering a call on international boulevard. That officer is listed in stable condition. Californias largest utility is found guilty in a criminal trial from the san bruno pipeline explosion in 2010. A jury convicted pg e on six of a dozen charges. Kpix 5 reporter andria borba has a closer look at the convictions and how much the Utility Company will pay in fines. Reporter now, the verdict came down this afternoon. Pg e was found guilty of one felony count of obstructing a federal investigation into the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion. The company was also found guilty of five federal felony counts of knowingly failing to inspect and test its Gas Pipelines for additional danger. For each guilty count the utility must pay a 500,000 fine for a total of 3 million. Pg e released this statement a short time ago. While we are very much focused on the future, we will never forget the lessons of the past. We have made unprecedented progress in the nearly six years since the tragic san bruno accident. And we are committed to maintaining our focus on safety. You know that, 3 million fine is to be paid by shareholders and not ratepayers according to the judge. Reporter if that number sounds lower than what you remember, youre not wrong. Initially federal prosecutors asked for 562 million in this case. But just last week, they lowered that maximum ask to 6 million because of the complex penalty phase of the trial. Now, jurors were unaware of this at this point. Now pg e though can still appeal the 3 million fine. In San Francisco, andria borba, kpix 5. Phil matier joining us with more perspective on the verdict. 3Million People are going to say its nothing. Its nothing. Even if we look at the 1. 6 billion fine that the state puc imposed on pg e after the explosion, again, after Tax Deductions and such, its not that big. They are going to survive. As a matter of fact, the survival of pg e was on the Public Utilities commission mied as they went about this process. And, as a matter of fact, its interesting to note that pg e is nobody was at that defense table. No human being was there. Nobody is being indicted or held accountable for the deaths of the people in san bruno. Instead, what we have is a corporation on trial because prosecutors could not knowingly pin anything on anybody individually willfully knowing what they had done. Other mention of the dropping from 562 million, it was too complex . Reporter it was. The rule was that you could fine up to twice the amount that pg e profited from and the question was, well, what did they profit from the san bruno line itself . The systemwide line . It got to be very complicated, something that the prosecutors just felt they couldnt convince a jury on or even halfway explain to a jury and finally, changes since then. We have pg e, theres a new leadership at the top, the other ones did get a handsome severance packages, millions of dollars but also the Public Utilities commission, a big shakeup there as a result of this because of a push by that little town, san bruno took on the pg e and puc on and revealed a cozy relationship between the watchdog agent say that works for us supposedly and the utility itself and leading to a shakeup, as well. For years the trees have been a fixture on Country Club Drive in rohnert park and now the city council is voting on a plan to root them out.
