Despite protests from prosecutors and his victims, he was released from a Psychiatric Hospital two years ago. But then taken back into custody yesterday. Now, officials wont say why. But they say that he is not accused of a new crime. Pg e was found guilty on a number of charges after the san bruno pipeline explosion. The city of san bruno says that they are pleased with the verdict but some are saying that the possible penalty is not enough. Sandra osborne reports. The Utility Company could be fined 3 million. Reporter with what this neighborhood has been through, many are saying the penalties need to be higher for pg e. A federal jury convicting the company on one count of obstruction of justice for interfering with the investigation into that explosion which killed 8 people and destroyed more than 30 homes. The other 5 felony convictions were knowingly failing to inspect and test its gas pipeline for any additional danger. But heres where things are getting controversial today. Theres a maximum fine of 500,000 per count meaning that fines can only be 3 million. The number was reduced by federal prosecutors last week from 562 million. A fine this small is obviously completely insignificant to pg e. Pg e is a corporation. There is only one language corporations understand and that language is money. So this is the equivalent of a slap on the wrist for a murder charge. Lots of businesses and homes nearby. When by first told you this story last month, four people had said they had been shot at. Since then, six more people have said its happened to them. Now, this is where the last shooting happened off blossom hill road and poughkeepsie last friday at 1 a. M. All the shootings have happened off blossom hill road which means poughkeepsie and monterey, all of them happening between midnight and 1 00 a. M. No one has been seriously hurt. One driver was grazed by a bullet. Another one was hit by flying glass. Its leaving a lot of people here fearful, terrified, who drive or work or live in this area. I heard a loud bang, head breeding, window shatters. They have recovered shell casings in streets. I sometimes come by through this area and its just like again being scared a little bit, like, hearing this information im , like, i maybe i should take a different route. Twocar crash in the center divide, you know, causing cars to drive about 22 Miles Per Hour in that area. And then of course lets take a look at your bay bridge toll plaza, maze to downtown westbound will take about 15 minutes so keep that in mind for the toll plaza traffic and your san mateo bridge 880 to 101 westbound will take but 20. Work should be getting under way now to remove the final visible truss segments from the old eastern span of the bay bridge. This is video from a previous operation. Crews will cut the truss from its support and lower it on to barges. This one will have to be cut into three segments before it can be hauled away. At the state capital in sacramento an Assembly Committee will consider a bill that would bring stricter oversight to the Construction Industry here in california. State senators jerry hill and loni hancock authored the bill. It stems from last years fatal balcony collapse at an Apartment Building in berkeley. The mothers of the two of those victims are among those scheduled to testify at todays hearings. Under immense pressure of the chancellor of ucdavis is stepping down. Linda katehi was accused of violating of the universitys rules on nepotism. She also allegedly misused student fees and lied about her roles in social media contracts. But in her Resignation Letter she said investigators confirmed she did not violate any University Policies or laws. Well, a statement from the uc president tells a different story. Quote, the investigation found numerous instances where chancellor katehi was not candid either with me, the press or the public, that she exercised poor judgment and violated multiple University Policies. This all stems from that notorious pepper spraying incidents on campus. You may remember from 2011. Katehi has been on paid leave since april when she was accused of hiring Image Consultants to counter bad publicity generated by that video. The verdict is in. The federal jury found pg e guilty on several counts in relation to a deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno. The city has wanted a conviction for years but this morning, not everyone is calling this a victory. Reporter many people saying this is just a drop in the bucket compared to what the city had to go through. Eight people killed, more than 30 homes destroyed and they are saying those penalties should be much higher after that explosion. The trial went on for 5 1 2 weeks in this case. Californias largest Utility Company found guilty of misleading investigators about how it was identifying high risk pipelines. Pg e found not guilty of six of 11 remaining counts of alleged pipeline violations. Although prosecutors got the conviction, a surprise decision to lower the maximum fine from 562 million to 3 million is upsetting a lot of people. The fine of 3 million which is the maximum that they can be assessed today is a slap on the wrist for pg e. Its a cost of doing business. But even if the penalty were 500 million, thats still just the cost of doing business. Now they are looking for the shooter. They are looking for a hiker that went missing on the yuba river. The volunteer searcher was shot in the hip and airlifted to the hospital. He is expected to be okay. He was with two other volunteers at the time. Nobody else was hurt. No suspects descriptions. A paramedics with the San Francisco Fire Department is back in bars. James novello was supposed to be arraigned yesterday but instead he was arrested outside the courtroom. Police say they found materials that are used to make bombs inside his home. Novello was supposed to be in court for something that happened last week. He reportedly put an explosive device in his neighbors planter after they got into a fight over street parking. One neighbor says that his car was broken into and his tires were slashed after he parked outside novellos house. Novello is now facing new charges. A hospital near washington, dc has moved nine babies out of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit into another hospital after three of them tested positive for a potentially deadly bacteria. Doctors at Prince Georges Hospital center in maryland say the babies havent shown any symptoms at this point. But pathologists are investigating the recent deaths of other babies in the nicu to see if they may have a connection to the bacteria found in the noses of these three infected infants. And this is out of an abundance of concern for safety. There have been no clear deaths associated with these infections. Hospital officials believe the bacteria came from the water pipes leading into the hospital. They stopped using the water in the nicu several days ago and today they started disinfecting that plumbing. Time now 6 40. They cut their forecast for the full year saying that there are new market entrants and they are aggressive in their pricing hurting sound powers bottom line. They will cut costs and in the process its going to get 1200 employees at 15 of its workforce. Most of those job cuts will come in the philippines where sunpower will shut down a facility. Shares of sunpower are diving by over 30 in the early going. Its a much better story for San Franciscobased yelp. The online reviewer getting glowing reviews for its earnings easily topping expectations. The number of reviews on the site rose 30 in the quarter from a year earlier to 108 million. Shares of yelp are surging higher by 12 in the early going. And bloomberg today is rooting that apple may give the first major makeover to the macbook pro in four years. It would include a secondary display screen above the keyboard in which there would be no function keys but instead touchscreens for those display keys.
