That is part of the gun battle this finally took down accused cop killer Jeremy Goulet a former marine described by his own father as a ticking time bomb. He was armed with three pistols and wearing body armor after officers say he killed two santa cruz detectives, stole their guns and their unmarked cars. Officers found him shot him and killed him half an hour later about a block away. At a vigil last night for the two fallen officers, dozens of people came to mourn detective Sergeant Loran butch baker and detective Elizabeth Butler, who had gone to goulets home to question him about Sexual Assault allegations. Heres bakers daughter ashley. My dad told me how smart i was and how proud he was of me. [ crying ] and that and he said he thought about me he just made me feel so good. [ crying ] reporter now, when the two detectives came to talk to goulet, they were in plainclothes. We dont know yet if they were wearing body armor. Its often up to the officers. We may hear more at the press conference at 11 30 this morning. Officers are also appealing to the public to send in any cell phone video people may have taken of the events on tuesday. A fire crew got caught in the crossfire as they headed to help the fallen officers. The firefighters jumped into action to protect people passing by. The sheriff said some even used their own bodies to shield witnesses from the gunfire. No firefighters by the way or bystanders were injured. The gunmans own father described his son as a ticking time bomb. Jeremy goulets criminal background also cases of being a peeping tom. He was arrested for that in portland, oregon in 2007 and in berkeley last august. Neighbors there called police about fights between goulet and his twin brother. He was fired from a coffee shop last friday. I just remember he was in intense. Something about him was like kind of you know. Goulet was in the marine reserves from 1996 to 2002 and he worked as a helicopter mechanic and with military police. New this morning, San Leandro Police are looking for an 11yearold foster child. Miles alvarez was dropped off at the Madison Elementary School on monday and never made it home to his foster parents. Investigators suspect miles is with his mother, michelle alvarez. Officers say she has been trying to reunite with him since they were separated. A board voted to fire merel grant who was paid on paid administrative leave last week. A number of parents called for his removal after a special Education Teacher was allowed to keep her job despite her conviction for kicking a 5year old student. Other bay area headlines, the Lehigh Southwest Cement Company is being sued by the family of the three workers who were killed in a shooting spree at the companys quarry near cupertino. The gunman was former employee Shareef Allman who killed himself the day after the 2011 rampage. The suit claims the company knew allman was unstable and could have done more to prevent the tragedy. Livermore police have arrested three juveniles for making Cyber Threats against one of the victims of the so called hummer mom, christine hubbs. The suspects are believed to be friends of hubbs children. Hubbs was convicted of sexually abusing two 14yearold boys more than two years ago. Switching gears, our first check of weather at 4 37. Could see some low 70s inland maybe about 71 in concord, 71 in livermore, 72 degrees in the napa valley, a lot of 60s inside the bay and at the coastline. A little earlier around 4 30 we saw some police cars blocking a couple of lanes towards the toll plaza. Thank you. What caused a 61yearold water main to break in San Francisco remains a mystery this morning. That rupture damaged dozens of homes and cars. So much water yesterday morning. The cleanup is far from over. They filled the sinkhole with dirt. They are trying to figure out what happened. Yesterday morning a wart pipe burst damaging 23 homes and 12 cars. Some cars were halfway submerged in water and mud. Hundreds of thousands of gallons pooled at the intersection of 15th avenue and wawona. And if you thought this mess was bad outside, neighbors tell us water spilled into their basement up to three feet high. I went downstairs without any boots or anything and i was in water about a foot and a half probably. My car had water in it parked in the garage. So it was quite a mess. Reporter now, the good news is no one has been displaced. The city did yellow tag 6 homes which means there was extensive water damage and building inspectors will check to see if they are structurally safe. In addition to that, we can expect those utility workers again to be back out here this morning. What they are trying to do is repair this road and the sinkhole as quickly as possible. Reporter democrats will offer up a plan today but republicans will reject it because along with spending cuts, it includes higher taxes from closing loopholes. All were offered is a gimmicky tax hike thats designed to fail. Reporter and a republican bill being proposed today isnt likely to pass either. It gives the president flexibility to decide where to make spending cuts but does not bring in any new revenue. At some point, hopefully soon, republicans will understand the need to compromise here. Reporter congressional leaders from both parties meet with the president at the white house tomorrow. And they spoke briefly at the unveiling of the rosa parks statue here on capitol hill wednesday. Reporter check out this memorial here behind me at the Santa Cruz Police Department Downtown santa cruz. It has just been growing by the hour. A real outpouring of Community Support. Police officers are appealing for cell phone video trying to put together more pieces of the puzzle of what transpired. A neighbor shot this cell phone video on tuesday showing lawmen slowly moving in formation to check on the suspects body. They shot and killed 35year old Jeremy Goulet a former marine after they say he killed two santa cruz detectives who had come to his home to question him about an alleged Sexual Assault. They say he flung open the door and started firing. The detectives radioed for help as they lay dying and goulet stole their guns and their car. Officers shot him a half hour later about a block away. There is no doubt in anyones mind that the officers that engaged goulet stopped an imminent threat to the community and neutralized that problem before it reached out and harmed the people that were important to protect. Reporter dozens of people came to a vigil last night to mourn the loss of 28year veteran Sergeant Loran butch baker. The chief called him the best investigator in the force. And 10year detective investigator Elizabeth Butler who specialized in Sexual Assaults. All the officers took the day off to mourn yesterday. Many of the 100 officers will be returning to work today. Thats going to be a slow transition process. The chief says it is up to them when they return to patrolling the streets
