Reporter in cases with salmonella and chicken, the government does not force the Chicken Company to take its product off the shelves. So at this point, foster farms chicken is still on the shell on store shelves. But heres a graphic. Heres the serial numbers with the infected chicken. According to the department of agriculture, 278 people in 18 states, but mostly here in california, have already gotten sick from these. We found a bay area man with one of the chicken packages. Ed says he was just about to cook it when he saw our alert on kpix 5 monday. Thank goodness he was warned because getting sick from salmonella isnt pretty. Most of the symptoms are usually selflimited diarrhea, fever, you know, abdominal cramping, pain and after two or three days, they usually go away. You dont need for most adults, you dont need to give antibiotics. Reporter so our Public Health expert says when you have hundreds of people get sick like in this case, that usually means the chicken is distributed widely from one centrally located source. Frank, michelle . So, mark, at this point, what should folks do . So really the number one thing is what we said at the top of the story which is check that serial number. Then of course as always wash your hands well before preparing the chicken and then cook the chicken thoroughly which is something that foster farms also recommends. A salmonella outbreak is traced to foster farms chicken. Kpix 5 reporter mark kelly is in daly city this morning. Mark, the chicken is still for sale because theres no recall. Reporter it is, michelle. Foster farms put out a statement saying it regrets that these people got sick and it is working on new safety precautions but they also emphasize its important to cook that chicken thoroughly. One of the most popular chicken brands tied up in a salmonella outbreak. And this morning, foster farms is still keeping the chicken on store shelves. Monday the usdas food safety and Inspection Service issued a Public Health alert saying 278 people got sick with strains of salmonella heidelberg in 18 states mainly california and that the illnesses are associated with raw chicken products produced by foster farms at 3 facilities in california. Turns out, ed bought the infected chicken was about to cook it up when he saw our alert on kpix 5. Why can they put stuff out that has salmonella when if they could check it closer it wouldnt happen. Reporter his chicken had one of the serial numbers making people sick. Check yours. They include p6137, p6137a, and p7632. Foster farms does not plan to recall the chicken. That means one thing, you are the last line of defense against salmonella. In cases of chicken in salmonella the government does not force a recall. So in this case, foster farms is not issuing a recall just yet. Live in daly city, mark kelly, kpix 5. Foster farms is saying you should cook your chicken thoroughly to kill salmonella that could be on it. We are expecting new enrollment numbers today for covered california on the first day of californias version of governmentrun Health Insurance. More than 600,000 visitors clicked on the website more than 5 million times. There were a number of glitches including slow page loads or no loads at all keeping people from enrolling online in those first couple of days. The partial shutdown of the federal government is about to hit the people who monitor the Nations Nuclear power plants. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Said yesterday it expects to furlough about 3900 employees at the close of business on thursday. The agency will retain 300 essential personnel, though. A woman says a watsonville farmer took her to his farm and raped her. 60yearold Manuel Alvarez was arrested. The woman says he told her he might give her a job, then held her against her will and assaulted her. Investigators say alvarez was accused in a similar incident back in april. New traffic lights look activated this morning in the caldecott tunnel between oakland and orinda. They will stay green as caltrans conducts a 10day test. When the lights are fully on this year, they will be able to turn yellow or red in response to an accident or other traffic delays around the tunnel. New york police have arrested a fourth suspect and are seeking two others in connection with the beating of the suv driver last week. It happened after the suv driver accidentally bumped one of several motorcyclists riding together. Some bikers attacked him, others shot video of the beating. I thought he was dead. I said stop, let it go, guys. I dont know what they were thinking. Somehow they stopped. The victim did survive. Meanwhile three nypd officers were part of the group of bikers. We are expected to find out the results of a 60day president ial review on a ban concerning older samsung tablets and smartphones that infringed on apple patents. There is a chance the u. S. Trade representative could veto that ban as the trade rep did earlier with a Prior International trade Commission Ban on apple products but theres a difference in the kind of patents that are at issue here. Apples patents were differentiated, patents that could be worked around, while samsungs patents that it violated against apple reportedly are the kind that are industry standards making it a tougher case for samsung. Well find out soon on that. Good news on the foreclosure market. Core logic reporting that there were 48,000 foreclosures in august down from 72,000 a year earlier. That allows you to have a thermostat that programs itself very intelligently by your behavior and you can control it remotely over the internet which youll find is a Common Thread to all of these householdconnected technology devices. By your behavior . It senses where you are. And every time you turn and adjust the temperature a little, i want it warmer or colder it remembers that and puts it into a program profile. The longer you own it the more data points about how you live it has and gets smarter to save energy and guess the climate you want better. If you have a house up in tahoe and you want it warmed up . Do it from your home anywhere in the world. Cool. Then you have wireless door locks. Lock atron is one of these out there. You put this over your deadbolt, clamp it over the existing one on the door and from an app you can lock or unlock a door anywhere in the world and share lock permission with someone else who has the app. Its a way to virtually give someone a key and then take it back. What about the security . They say they use the same security that online banks do. They say its as secure. Now, yes, lots i have my concerns, too. You will have four or five of these in your house and they talk to the thermostat. Now you have more sensors in the house to figure out where you are what youre doing so they all get smarter together which is very interesting. But your house is finally becoming something you can drive from an app whether you want it or not but its a future trend. Whats the app again . Theres a lot of apps. Each one has its own. Francois englert and peter higgs received it. The theoretical discovery of the higgs boson particle is said to allegedly explain the exist of mass in the unverse. Barts union is not issue a 72hour strike notice and thats a good indicator that the two sides may be closer to an agreement. As the two sides work out their differences, one thing in common we heard across the board from bart management and its unions, we dont want to strike. The unions latest move not to issue a courtesy strike notice is an encouraging sign a deal may be on the horizon. However, the clock is ticking and bart and its unions still need to settle how far apart they are. About 89 million gap that they talk about, its for all the bart employees including management. That number should be much smaller. Bart cant look at it just on two bargaining units. You have to expect that the other bargaining units are going to expect the same thing that these two get. Reporter in the event the two sides cant agree, bart is ready to hire a fleet of buses to prepare for round 2 of commuter chaos. That contingency plan is not cheap.
