Cnet editor sharon joins us to explain how the tech is already identifying and tracking our faces. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Its happening. Kind of having fun with it. So we have been playing with amazon fire phone here. But so your face is really becoming a hot commodity in tech today. And were only seeing it enter into more and more of these big apps and products. And there are actually two technologies that work here. So this first is face tracking. And face tracking actually the machine can identify different parts of your face, your eyes, your mouth, your nose. And once it pinpoints those data points, it can actually continue to track your face. Then theres facial recognition where a machine can actually recognize either who you are specifically or what part what demographic youre a part of. So the biggest example of facial recognition has to be facebooks auto photo tagging. So the way that works is you upload a photo to facebook and before you even have a chance to click tag, facebook already knows who is in the picture. So that is largely thanks to facebooks big set of data it has, you know, millions of photo on its website to draw from and to learn from. But facebook also released a research paperback in june saying they have technology to identify faces 97. 25 of the time. So compared to a human, a human can identify faces 97. 5 of the time. What if you dont want your face recognized . Reporter thats a really big issue that were going to have to deal with over the next few years. More apps and services are using it. So another big example is the amazon fire phone. So the fire phone actually has five frontfacing cameras. Thats kind of insane. But the reason its there is so it knows where your face is at all times. And so that its interface can follow your face and actually change and move with you. That was amazons big sell when they announced the fire phone. There are a couple of other apps that use it. One is laureals makeup geniu app. It scans your face and tracks it so what you can do is applying makeup to yourself and it will do it in realtime. You have to see it to believe it. But the real question like you said is [ laughter ] i know, frank, you have to try it. I need help. [ laughter ] so the real question, yeah, what does this mean for privacy and security . You can imagine sometime in the near future youll walk by a bus stop and the advertisement has cameras equipped on it to actually recognize what demographic youre a part of and serve up ads specifically tailored to you. Isnt that something . I will vewalk around with my eyes closed. Or put a sack on our heads. Dont look at that youll end up buying it. I love those laureal face apps because you can take a picture and all of a sudden you can kind of soft lens it and oh, yeah. And makeup it and all of a sudden that photo looks 10 years younger [ laughter ] thats available now . Yes. Its 200 in line with the iphone and other big android phones. Will iphone go down that road . Its possible they will incorporate it deep into their interface but we wont see those gimmicky things on iphone, unlikely, that we see on amazon. Thank you, sharon profis. 6 52. Another chain of for profit colleges in the bay area has closed.
