Until saturday, when a band of taliban fighters handed him over to American Special Operations Forces in a Tense Exchange along the pakistani border. U. S. Once on board a helicopter bergdahl wrote out two letter question to make himself understood over the den. Sf, meaning special forces, yes, one shouted. Weve been looking for you for a long time. Now certain he was free, bergdahl wept. Outside the white house yesterday evening the president joined by bergdahls parents spoke about the operation. Today, the deficits are gone and weve invested an additional 2 billion dollars in education. Now john perez is running for controller, to keep fighting for balanced budgets. Democrat john perez for controller. C. E. O. The oneroom school house something from our past. Unless that is you live in one of the american towns where these fabled schools are more than just a memory theyre alive and teaching. Sup day morning cover story is reported by pear peterson. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of america. For a century and a half, montanas Pioneer Mountain have echoed with the young voices of the divide oneroom school. And justice for all. Yes, there are still withinroom Public Schools in america. Lets talk about the earth. How does the earth naturally filter water . Today about 200 oneroom schools carry on tradition thats older than america itself. And while the frontier where they first appeared may be gone the spirit that they helped create is alive and well in towns across rural america. This isnt just a school down a street. Right. This is the heart of the community. At divide community, she loves what she does. I have teacher meetings once a week with me, myself and i, we get along really well. Teaches grades k8 at times its had as many as 30 students. How are you . This year with only three students, bill can give such individual attention she makes lesson plans for each student. You are designing something custom made for these three kids. Yes. Thats, i would think, a great thing to be able to do as a teacher. It is. It really is. Because you can respect their differences and what makes them tick. First word. But there are some key similarities between a withinroom school house and your neighborhood school. Take the cost. Its roughly the same per student in all the schools have to meet the same state and national standards. And sometimes like at divide there are additional expectations at a school that has been operating since the 1870s. In small communities their schools are really important to them. Why . Because the school is what generates the reputation that have town. There was a time when almost every american child learned in a withinroom school. In the 1700s, john adams taught in a oneroom school near boston. Abe lincoln was educated in a oneroom school and henry ford loved his so much he had it moved to museum in michigan. As late as 1913, half of Americas School children were enrolled in the countrys 200,000 oneroom schools. But after the First World War oneroom schools started to close as people moved in to cities and Small Schools started to consolidate. For most of us the oneroom school is now just folklore, the kind that laura wilder brought to live in little house on the prairie. You cant learn to write prop arely. Its been a long time since the farm lands near lansing, michigan, were prairie. Lets see what you know. Linda teaches a class of 18 ages 512 at the strange oneroom school founded in 1879. Lets start off with tyler, joey. The kids still sit in the exact same classroom except now they learn on ipads. But one teacher job requirement hasnt changed across all those years being self sufficient. The teacher would call the guidance counselor, that would be you. Or complained to the principal, that would be you. The a first it was overwhelming now its part of the job. You just have the instinct to know what to do and to say. Here the lessons are not just about math or science but about older children helping the younger ones with things like learning how to read. And theres an unusual teaching tool that may only work in a withinroom school, eavesdropping, it sure helps first grader thomas. I was like, the name to all the third grade stuff i learned a lot. Came home, mom, what is the civil war . He didnt know civil war. He heard the other kids talking. With cynthia, herself a teacher as a Christian High School wanted 7yearold thomas in a oneroom school. Even though there were bigger schools closer to their home. Kindergarten he was moved up to first grade, reading and math, it was a smooth transition. I dont want him to grow up too fast. I want him to enjoy his childhood and be a child. And in this school he is still a first grader but hes doing second and third grade work in reading and math. At strange, there are other lessons, students must clean the school every day. What do you teach there . Responsibility. I think responsibility goes with every aspect of life that we do. It carries over to work ethic that everyone should have instilled in them. You might think kids would miss things like team sports, but they dont. At divide a local oneroom schools get together to make up a track or basketball team. But for some its hard when the day comes to go to the big city high school, it can be in a word terrifying. You go from seven, eight kids to thousands. How did you handle it . Poorly at first. But i guessueed on. I came out was able to make friends, talk to people, get on with my life. John, who graduated from divide is now a senior who is going to College Next Year for degree in computer science. He says in balance, the oneroom school was unique basis for a life of learning. How do you think you did academically against the kids who had gone through a Normal School system . In the top ranks. You were . Yes. Why . I think it was the push of education here. There was no discouragement. Always, what can you learn, you can do this, you will learn this. I love this one. Im with the students for nine years of their life. You cant help but love them. They were a part of you. Im a part of them. No wonder when it comes to education, the teachers and students in oneroom schools stow often consider themselves the lucky ones. Osgood coming up. Todays shaving represents quite an advantage over the razors and methods of old as mo rocca reminds us. Once upon a time, men typically came to a place like this for a close shave. Then, a man named gillette introduced the safety razor. Now a man could shave in the privacy of his home. The big break through that gillette came up with was how to make steel that in this and that hard to make a blade that you could rehe place. Gillettes director of research and development. A. A lot about outsmarting facial hair. Hair and skin. Got to outsmart hair and skin. Took me for a run through blade history. Adjusts to shaving closer. In the 1960s there was the no blade razor. Instead of a blade an astonishing stainless steel band that winds up like the film in a camera. Track ii first double bladed razor was 1971. To shave you even closer we put in another one. Three blades in 1998. The first triple blade shaving system. Gave way to four blades in 2003. With four advanced blades. Which responds to five blades which got this mad tv parody. I wish there was a better razor. Way better one. You know now there is. With 20 blades we guarantee the shave of your life. We are in one of our test labs. Cutting Edge Technology allows him to study how men shave their ten to 15,000 facial hairs. Weve seen a range from as few as 20 strokes in a shave up to wards of 750 strokes. What is this . This is what we call a video microscope. I want to put it on myself. Oh, my, gosh. I have no idea that my facial hair was so undisciplined. Can you clear it up . Which direction should one be shaving. Put the camera back on your face. What direction are the hairs growing . Theyre growing in all kinds of different directions. Should i be embarrassed by that . This is quite normal. For a lot of guys you take a stroke youre going with and against the grain in a single stroke. Turns out there is no one correct direction to shave. Next week, gillette is back with yet another antiwhisker weapon, the fusion pro glide with flex Ball Technology. What the flex Ball Technology it enables the razor to follow the contours of your face in three dimensions by adding a second pivot to the razor. Like for andre the giant. Yes. Consumer expert and radio host clark howard probably wont be buying. Not because the fusion pro glide with flex Ball Technology isnt nifty, it is. But today the technology is so smart, so well designed that any improvements from here are so marginal. Because its already such a good experience. Howard is confident that the razor he already owns is cutting it just fine. In fact hes used this very same cartridge for the past 15 months. Razor blades are so expensive now and reality is that blades dont deteriorate from the act of shaving is from the moisture. Clark secret far keeping his edge . He dries his razor off after every single use. All i do i shake it thoroughly, then i go against a towel i wipe the blade clean then it goes back in my drawer straight up and im good to go the next day. As for me, im old school. Chances are the troops would have faced anion tougher fight if not for some special pilots spreading their wings in the run up to the attack. Stephanie rigs has their story. On june 6, 1944, as allied troops fought and died on the beaches of normandy high in the skies above the fray, thousands of u. S. War planes lent vital support. And those planes were there in part thanks to the effort of a little known band of brave women far from the front lines. Women like lucille weis. Last time i flew in december 1944. What was it like . It was hard to give up. I loved flying. At 93, lucille is one of the few left to tell their story, firsthand. Why did you want to fly u. S. War planes . Well, one reason of course was because i loved to fly. But i also want to help in the war effort. Everybody was so patriot i can. In 1942, the u. S. Had planes in the war factory each month. They needed to be delivered to air basis but pilots were in short supply. So in the summer of 1943, a call went out for women to do the flying. I was accepted in may of 43 one of the earlier classes. And i went on the train down to sweet water, texas. 25,000 women applied. And 1100 were chosen. As Women Air Force service pilots. We were trained the military way just like the male cadets. We lived in barracks. We learned to march and we were under military discipline we had to make our beds in a certain way, we had in specs. The wasps a six month stretch of anything handed to women. It was very stressful because we had to meet the requirements. I think we proved that we could fly those airplanes just as well as men. The wasps proved themselves again and again logging more than 60 million miles in more than 12,000 aircraft like the b17, b24s and p51 mustangs that helped win the war. While other women involved in the war effort, the rosy riff terse lived on of a tore the war the wasps were lodgely forgot. I think earn american should be aware of what these women sacrificed and did to in world war ii, during a time when women were not able to have careers and do things outside of their traditional roles this was an opportunity to be adventurous, serve their country and a graceful and beautiful way. Jill is a film maker whose documentary we served, too helps to give the wasps their due before its too late. How many of the women that flew for the wasps are still around . Under 200 women still left. I feel a sense of urgency to get this story out for those that are still with us can see that theyre being recognized that the country is really rallying behind them. None of the wasps are combat, flying fast, powerful war machines was dangerous business. 38 women died in crashes and since the women were classified as civilians neither they nor their families received military benefits. The parents didnt get anything. Not a flag, nothing. Not even acknowledgment that their daughter had been in the military. All that changed in 1976, a knew era began with the arrival of the first female cadet. Great fanfare, women were admitted in to the air force. The wasps took notice. They were putting releases for the first time women would be flying military aircraft. And they forgot about us thats when we got organized. They got organized and got results. In 1977 the wasps were reclassified as military veterans and granted full benefits. But for lucille and the others, real wreck in this case in 2009 when president obama signed the bill awarding the wasps the congressional gold medal. House speaker john baner. Simply put, the outstanding success that america achieved during ward war ii but not had been possible without the Women Air Force service pilots. She accepted the award for all the wasps. At a washington ceremony the following year. I believe this is the day that when the people of america will no longer hesitate in answering the question, do you know who the wasps were . Today more than 60,000 women serve in the u. S. Air force flying on the wings of a legacy that was almost left behind. Women give you the credit for opening the door for them. They do, yes. If we had any part in it im very pleased. Probably would have been but made it a little bit easier. Osgood ahead. The author every teen is talking about. Especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem. I was taking warfarin but wondered, could i focus on Something Better . My doctor told me about eliquis for three Important Reasons. One, in a Clinical Trial eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin theres no routine blood testing. [ male announcer ] dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons bernie. Hey eliquis. And you probably never heard of him. But your teenager probably has. His name is john green. 36 years old, married father of two, and cult hero to millions. Hes written four books including biggest best seller the fault in our stars. What is your name. Why are you staring at me. The movie session is about to open. I am quite reject that. This is where i saw the movie with my wife. Just two of us alien in the theater it was so romantic. What was your reaction, same as normal movie goers . No. I started crying during the opening credits. John greens own story began in orlando, florida. What kind of kid were you . A rule breaker, kind of trouble. I feel bad. I want to have been its nice for me to draw because i was a troubled kid. And i was anxious and depressive and i felt very socially isolated at times but i was still intellectually curious. Then came collegea brief enrollment at Divinity School and job at a Childrens Hospital in chicago. As student chaplain. When i was at the hospital i met all of these young people who, yes, sir, they were sick, but many other things, they were funny and angry and sad they had all of the emotions that any other human has, all the desire, all the wishes. That was what really resonated with me. Green spent years trying to turn his Hospital Experience in to a book. In the meantime he published three other novels. A few days ago i then in 2008, he met esther early. A fellow Youtube Video maker who had thyroid cancer. Met her, befriended her and was changed by her. She died in 2010. Its not fair that esther died, i am angry that she was sick. I am angry that she suffered as long as she did but her life had meaning. And understanding that was very important to me finally being able to write the story. We have a choice in this world. That story is the fault in our stars. This is the truth. Its a funny unsenn mental book about two teenagers who meet in canner support group and fall in love. Ive been in remix for a year and a half. Maybe youd like to share some of your fears with the group. The book became a sensation. As my panel of hard score green fans made clear. If youre trying to explain to an adult about fault in our stars why you love it, its a cancer book im not going to read that. Its not about cancer. Its not what its about. Its a love story between two normal teenagers that just so happen to have a terrible disease. I loved the book, its amazing. Thanks for reading it. Green sold over seven million copies of the book. But millions of fans know him not just as john green, author. No matter your circumstances you are valuable and rare and worthy of love. Also know him as john green, youtube celebrity. But the green brothers do marshal their army of followers in to action. For charity. We have this big project called the project for awesome which is 48 hour long youtube, we raised about 800,000. Does have the occasional detractor. Hes been accused of romanticizing illness. Including the stars of the movie, laura d,rn and shaleen woodley. Was like, i would love to audition for hazel if im right for the role. Thats fine, somebody else is better but you need to please make some movie. You feel greater pressure when you show up knowing that youre sustaining the hopes and dreams of all these people who dont want you to mess up the book . We already each of us were the obsessed fans the minute we found the book. Movie of another john green novel is already in the works. Paper town. Green gives credit not to his own talent but to his readers. We are led toe believe that teenagers have their faces behind screen, theyre antisocial they dont care. Disengaged they dont read. Not true. Thats what our parents said about us. Thats what their parents said. Its still untrue. Yes, they are learning in different ways but still learning, they are still reading, they are still thoughtful and i am inspired every day by their intellectual curiosity. Gets me in troublesome times but i just feel like thats how god made me, whenever i feel. Theres a that ton her forearm she says pretty much sums her up. I got this when i was 22. Colt. 45. A little angel wings. A little bit tough, a little bit sweet. Youre lookin at it. Lambert made her name with about heartache and revenge with songs like kerosenism. Her fiery style was something Country Music hadnt seen in awhile. Does that make it hard in some ways because Country Music didnt know where to put you . It took a minute. Took a little bit. Country radio, too. At first i thioate was like too much. People they were afraid that people wouldnt respond. But afraid that people wouldnt respond . I was overly confident. Academy of Country Music named her female vocalist of the year for the last five years in a row. Lamberts solo albums sold a million copies each. This week, shes out with her fifth. Its called platinum named in part she says for the color of her hair and her air stream trailer. Now 30, its a softer miranda. Singing less about revenge more about reminiscing. When you see that happen sort of go in to survival mode youre a little girl you can i can feel that. I knew that something was wrong. Per parents got back on hire feet and opened private investigator business. For a time, would bring some of their cases home taking in victims of domestic abuse. Black eyes and bloody noses its like real. Thats real. Seeing and hearing about that gave me feel to write about stuff like that. Case in point gun powder and lead her first top ten hit. When i have a woman come up to me say, gun powder and lead saved my life, he was going to kill me. Ill get teary id with them, i just know what they mean thats all they need to say. Thats what its about. Her music and her faith have both with constant in her life. She makes a point to pray with her band before every show. That foundation is what always keeps me centered when i stray or get lost or act a fool, per se. I come back to god and i like to have cocktails, i cuss a lot.
