Todays eye opener, your world in 90 seconds. Courage means not simply doing what is politically expedient, but doing what they believe is right. Republicans defend their new health care plan. You could lose your House Majority over this. Look, the fact of the matter is, there are some times in life you have to do whats right, not whats political expedient. Obamacare is collapsing. So this is a rescue mission to make sure everyone has access to Affordable Health care. North korea says it has detained another american citizen over unspecified hostile acts against the country. Hes getting closer to a deliverable nuclear weapon. Three, five years, the ability to reach the United States, that cannot be discounted by any american president. France has a new president elect. Emmanuel macron beat out the far right leader Marine Le Pen. Decisive victory for a man who a year ago wasnt even seen as a kuncontender. Former acting attorney general sally yates will appear before a senate committee. Sally yates was an Obama Administration holdover and a key figure in the russia investigation. She was fired soon after warning the white house about then National Security adviser Michael Flynns conversations with russian officials. Jeff pegues is outside the hearing room on capitol hill. Jeff, good morning. What will we hear . Well, good morning. Sally yates testimony is expected to include at least a few bombshells and thats why you have some members of congress pushing for her to appear and she will later on today. The former acting attorney general is expected to contradict public white house official statements about this shao, multiple congressional and Law Enforcement sources say yates notified the white house that former National Security adviser Michael Flynn was not forthcoming with the Vice President about his contacts with the Russian Ambassador sergey kislyak. According to sources she also informed the white house that flynn was compromised. The president later fired flynn but not immediately and some members of Congress Want to know what took the white house so long to respond to her concerns, keep in mind flynn, as former National Security adviser, was handling the most sensitive National Security information. And yates will not be the only big name testifying in this hearing room behind me later on this afternoon. Also appearing will be james clapper, the former director of National Intelligence who before his retirement in midjanuary, was briefed on the most important details connected to this russian investigation. Gayle . All right. Thank you very much, jeff. The president is pushing republican senators to get on board with the legislation passed by the house to roll back obamacare. But key republicans say the senate will not vote on that bill. They plan to create their own version of Health Care Reform. Major garret is at the white house with the next act in the health care drama. Major good morning. Good morning. This white house is obviously okay spiking the ball when it believes it won. Last weeks the white house got angry with democrats accusing them of doing that after the budget passed and some of the president s Spending Priorities were not included. This health care touchdown dance occurred some time in the First Quarter. And if you allow me to extend the metaphor some on the president s own team are now trashing his health care playbook. The president achieved something no one thought he would. Reporter white house chief of staff Reince Priebus defended President Trumps premature rose garden celebration, backslapping House Republicans for passing an obamacare repeal, Senate Republicans will summarily ignore. I think we were right to give the congress an at a boy in the rose garden but this is just the beginning, the first step. Reporter republican senators will not let the American People down, the president said on twitter sunday. The house bill is not going to come before us. Reporter maine republican Susan Collins dismissed the house effort, joining Numerous Senate gop critics of the house bill. The senate is starting from scratch. Were going to draft our own bill and im convinced that were going to take the time to do it right. Reporter senate gop objections range from cuts to medicaid spending for the poor and disabled to the potential loss of insurance for some because of preexisting conditions. Face it, were all sort of guessing right now. Reporter white house budget director Mick Mulvaney would not commit the president to future senate changes. Even in the face of that massive legislative rewrite mulvaney said House Republicans should sell the bill back home. I would be ecstatic about saying look, heres what we did, heres the process, was it ugly, yeah, did we get it done, follow through on our promise to repeal in the house, yes. Reporter idaho republican are all labrador did as much and got a town hall earful. Nobody dies because they dont have access to health care. Reporter later wrote on facebook that response, quote, wasnt very eloquent. Congressman labrador went on to explain under the gop bill people who need Emergency Care will still be able to receive it and, therefore, charlie, in his words are unlikely to die. Thanks, major. Barack obamas strongly defended his health care legislation. He spoke last night when he received a profile in courage award at the john f. Kennedy president ial library. Mr. Obama called on congress to have the courage to do what is right, regardless of politics. We are covering the former president , reentry into the debate. Jan, good morning. Good morning. President obama did mention President Trump by name during the more than 30minute speech but did take the opportunity to defend the Health Care Bill he considers to be his main legislative legacy. There was a reason why Health Care Reform had not been accomplished before. It was hard. Reporter accepting an award for courage, president obama shared recognition with members of congress who lost their seats supporting obamacare. These men and women did the right thing. They did the hard thing. Theirs was a profile in courage. Because of that vote, 20 Million People got Health Insurance who didnt have it before. Reporter president obama made no mention of his successor. This is a repeal and a replace of obamacare. Make no mistake about it. Reporter three days earlier celebrated a narrow vote in the house to undo mr. Obamas signature achievement and replace it with a plan republicans say will be more effective long term. I hope current members of congress recall that it doesnt take a lot of courage to aid those who already powerful, but it does require some courage to champion the vulnerable, and the sick. Reporter sticking to the theme of the night, the 44th president urged lawmakers to choose people over party. It is my fervent hope that todays members of congress, regardless of party, are willing to look at the facts and speak the truth, even when it contradicts party positions. Reporter now democrats, including president obama, didnt fix issues with obamacare in the last few years of his presidency. And now, they are banking on pushback to the republican Health Care Bill to help them win back seats in congress in 2018. Just today president obama heads to italy to give a keynote address on climate change. Norah . Jan, thank you so much. President trump says he looks forward to working with frances newly elected leader emmanuel macron. The centrist scored a resounding victory over Marine Le Pen. He won about twothirds of the votes cast at 39 years old, macron becomes frances youngest head of state since napoleon. This morning he joined frances current president at a ceremony marking the end of world war ii in europe. Mark phillips is in paris with what the Election Results mean for frances future. Good morning. Good morning. Well, President Trump may have congratulated the new president elect of france, emmanuel macron, but during the campaign he actually tweeted he thought the various terrorist attacks in france would help his right wing opponent Marine Le Pen. He was wrong. Reporter the winner went on stage to give his victory speech accompanied by bay toe vens ode to joy. The loser tried to dance her blues away to i love rock and roll. She couldnt have loved the numbers. Emmanuel macron is a 39yearold former investment banker who briefly had been a cabinet minister but had never run for office before. With both the left and the right of french politics rejected by the voters he came up the middle in a 66 to 34 win that can only be called a landslide. Macron said he understood the anger of those who had supported his far right wing opponent and would work for them too. But its hard to see how the principles of Marine Le Pens nationalist antiimmigration, national front, can be a accommodated. By a factor of two to one, the french had chosen macrons moderation over le pens extremism. In the french system, voters are given two ballots. Each with one candidates name on it. They vote with one and throw the other away. Trash bags across france were full of rejected scraps of paper with Marine Le Pens name on them. The news is not all good for emmanuel macron. He appeared at a v. E. Day commemoration with the outgoing president Francois Hollande and he now inherits all the problems that undermine the hollande presidency. Emmanuel macron ran his campaign on a completely different set of policies to donald trump and to his opponent Marine Le Pen. She campaigned on protectionism and closing borders. He argued for an internationalist approach and economic reform and gayle, he won. Mark phillips in paris, thank you. Another american has been detained in north korea raising the number of u. S. Citizens held there to four. North korea arrested kim hak song on saturday, for unspecified hostile acts, the second american professor to be arrested in the last month. Adriana diaz is in seoul, south korea with the latest on the string of detentions. Adriana, good morning. Good morning. At this point little is known about kim hak song or why he was arrested. Pyongyang university of science and technology confirmed his detention. He was doing Agricultural Development work there. This comes just two weeks after north korea detained his colleague kim sung doc known as imtony kim for hostile criminal acts as he was trying to leave the country. The latest arrests amid heightened tensions between the u. S. And north korea as the north continues to test Ballistic Missiles and the u. S. Has beefed up its military presence in the region as a deterrent. Two other americans known to be in custody, last Year University of virginia student Otto Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after he allegedly stole a propaganda poster and american kim dongchul is serving ten years for alleged espionage. The u. S. S state Department Says it is aware of this weekends detention and working with the Swedish Embassy in north korea because the u. S. Has no diplomatic ties with the north for the release of all the american prisoners there. Charlie . Adriana diaz in south korea, thanks. Former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice joins us now. She served as National Security adviser to president george w. Bush and then became the first female africanamerican secretary of state. Good morning. Good morning. We will talk later about your book, but first about populism. People who are worried about populism and its way were doing are cheering what happened in france but youre worrying that the debate has changed in terms of nationalism, in terms of protectionism, and other issues. Obviously its good news out of france. Macron is, obviously, of the center. No one i think who believes in globalization or immigration or free trade would have wanted Marine Le Pen to win. Nonetheless, those issues are still there. And the impulses and the sentiments that have but where populists brought populists to power and made them stronger than theyve ever been in their national electorates the issues have to be dealt with and those are people who feel theyre somehow not being served by their societies and their governments. And we really do need to Pay Attention. You say theyre changing the character of politics and we should Pay Attention to that. What youre seeing is that even centrist candidates are responding to the populist. Who talks about free trade. Who is really willing to talk in favor of immigrants these days. And so i think we can see that even centrist candidates are shifting their tone in response to the populists. So you have to deal with the root causes and thats where were going to have to go. The news of the day, north korea as well, what do you think that they are trying to accomplish by detaining another american citizen . Far be it for me to try to second guess kim jongun. I think he is reckless and maybe even a little unhinged. But clearly they are i think trying to send a message that they are powerful, theyre strong, they can make the United States suffer, and its just not a situation that any american president can ultimately tolerate. Something has to be done about that nuclear program. Shouldnt tolerate but President Trump said that he would be honored to meet with him and called him a smart cookie. Well, he is a smart cookie. He wouldnt have survived that long. Lets be clear that he, obviously, knows what hes doing. The president of the United States cant meet with kim jongun and certainly not under these circumstances. There may come a day if north korea gives up its Nuclear Weapons program and so forth and so on that having north korea back in the community of states or in the communities of states would be worth while. Clearly not there. The argument is that will never happen unless we get the chinese involved in a bigger way. The chinese we have to change their calculation. Right now they seem more worried about the potential collapse of a regime and doing hard things to the regime than about a nuclear north korea. I think thats what the administration is trying to do, is to change that calculus so the chinese see if they dont deal with the north koreans, we will. You among others have said that the trump government has in its National Security a group of very smart people. Yes. What worries you about the trump government . Outstanding all of them, and that is comforting. This is a president whos never been in the government. I think its taking them some time to understand first of all that its really hard, not as easy as it looks. He said it was hard. It is hard. Secondly, yes, the president s words matter and i think that youre starting to see that reaction he is reacting to the presidency. For instance, in syria, when an american president sees syrian babies choking on chemical gas, an american president says i cannot let that stand. No matter what they said when they were a candidate, when theyre president , they Say Something different and do Something Different and i think were starting to see that evolution. I certainly hope so. Sally yates is testifying today before the Senate Judiciary committee. What are the key questions that need to be asked of her today. Well, obviously, were all waiting to hear what shes going to say and far be it for me to be the first to ask the question but we need to understand what was going on before the inauguration of the president. There can only be one president at a time. And it is not unusual to meet with foreign dignitaries ambassadors when youre in transition. Thats not unusual at all. I did myself as the National Security adviser elect for a president george w. Bush, but you cant discuss policy and you cant suggest that you might change policy and so well see what really happened here. Thank you so much. Great to have you. Well see you in the 8 30 hour. Next hour. Dont go anywhere. Yes. Well talk about her new book. How about that. Yes. Called democracy stories from the long road to freedom. Members of penn state Face Criminal Charges including Involuntary Manslaughter and aggravated assault over a pledge. They allegedly waited about 12 hours before calling an ambulance. The grand jury determined that piazza died of the direct result of extremely reckless conduct of members of the beta fraternity. They have now disbanded that chapter. It does not tolerate hazing or alcohol abuse in any form. Cbs news legal analyst Rikki Klieman is here. This case was heart breaking and sad and maddening all at the same time. Can you explain the specifics . This case is one thats heartwrenching bethe president. The reason is this was a virtual 12hour period that was cal tured on video. We have to think of some of the things that happens to this boy who arrives well dressed in his khakis and blazer to do the last stage to get in fraternity. He has to run the gauntlet. What means is in two mintzs they have to get the young people as drunk as they can. He falls down a flight of stairs into a basement. We have a video showing him going up to the stairway and the next thing we see is four people bringing up his limp body. What do they do . Books to his back to keep him falling over in his own vomit. They sent a group sent text message saying they should call 911. The young person who wants to call is literally shoved up against the wall and is telling him they dont need to do this. This boys limp body is on the ground. Hes stepped over be Fraternity Brothers who go to bed and then ultimately he falls again, again, again. And he is dragged up the final time and even then when he obviously is bruised, bleeding, and is not able to respond, it still takes them 48 minutes. So what are the charges sp. You have eight people who are charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and aggravated assault. Aggravated assault in pennsylvania is a 20year felony. The unvoluntary manslaughter is very simple in pennsylvania. It is reckless or grossly negligent conduct. Also the fraternity is being charged. Theyre also being charged. I find that quite interesting. In the very long ere in this particular graphically harrowing sad lie describing this entire ordeal, the fraternity is charged because it says it nurtures an environment which emboldens this kind of reckless activity. Involvedthe criminal process, but ultimately you have the opportunity o a wrongful death suit on be behalf of the fam le and the onto way they get justice under the law is in money or punishment. Would they go after the school as well as the fraternity and the individuals . I think they would. President trumps soninlaw is rejecting new claims of conflict of interest. Ahead, Senate Republicans start reworking Health Care Reform under pressure from the president. And two ceos are here with a plan to address one Big Health Care issue the price of prescription drugs. But first heres todays eye opener at 8 00. So the testimony expected to include the few bombshells. Thats why you have some members of congress pushing for her to appear. This white house is obviously okay spiking the ball when it believes its won. This health care touchdown dance appears in First Quarter. If you allow me to extend metaphor, some on the president s own team are trashing the playbook. President obama didnt mention President Trump by name but he defended the Health Care Bill that he considers to be his main legislative legacy. Emmanuel macron ran on a completely different set of policies to donald trump. He argued for an internationalist approach and economic reform and he won. President trump said that he would be honored to meet with him and called him a smart cookie. Well, he is is a smart cookie. Lets be clear, that he obviously knows what hes doing. The house voted to repeal and replace obamacare. And many congressmen admitted they didnt even read the bill before voting on it. They treat health care the way i treat iphones agreement, oh, ill be fine. And then ill be dealing with a preexisting condition like the u2 album. Im charlie rose with gayle king and norah odonnell. Some gop senators are skeptical of the house plan, and the party can only lose two senators and still pass the bill if no democrats support it. Susan collins of maine says the nat the senate is starting from scratch. Reince priebus says he has spoken to six of the gop senators working on the bill. He says they will make improvements where they see fit. Last night, former president barack obama defended his Signature Health care plan and urged lawmakers to protect it. But it does require some courage to champion the vulnerable. I hope they understand that courage means not simply doing what is politically expedient, but doing what they believe deep in their hearts is right. The former president saluted democrats who voted for the Affordable Care act and then lost their seats in congress. Former acting attorney general sally yates will testify today about alleged ties between the Trump Campaign and russia. Yates will appear before a senate subcommittee. Sources say yates warned the white house that former National Security adviser Michael Flynn was not forthcoming with the Vice President about contacts with the Russian Ambassador. The sources say she informed the white house that flynn was compromised by russia. President trump tweeted this morning. Flynn was given the highest security clearance by the Obama Administration. He served as director of the Defense Intelligence agency under president obama but was fired from that post. President trump eventually fired flynn from the National Security adviser role but not immediately. Some members of Congress Want to know why it took the white house so long. Yates an Obama Administration holdover was fired for instructing the attorneys not to defend the travel ban. Greg abbott signed a bill banning sanctuary cities. The citizens expect us to keep them safe and thats what well do by me signing this law. Abbott signed the measure last night on facebook live. Every police chief has opposed it. It allows police to ask about immigration status during the routine stops. Police chiefs and sheriffs are required to hold criminal suspects for possible deportation. Those who do not will risk jail time or removal from office. Texas does not currently have any cities that formally declares themselves sanctuaries. The newly elected president of france will take office on sunday. The centrist took twothirds of the votes cast with le pen Mark Phillips is in paris with how it will major implications in the future. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Well, things do happen quickly here. Emmanuel macron is now the president elect of france, next weekend he will become the president of france. In fact, the incoming and outgoing president s working together today. Both macron and Francois Hollande attended a victory day on the Champs Elysees as is a traditional yearly event. At that time, macron would have been familiar the type of problems that undermined the hollande presidency. The stagnant economy, the high Unemployment Rate at 10 and 5 for young people and 25 for young people and frances problem with terrorism. Macron had campaigned on a very centrist platform. And at his victory rally last night he talked about bringing all of france together. Thatll be difficult to do with the followers of the person he beat, Marine Le Pen. She says that shes going to rebrand her party, the national front, and that she will continue to be a force in politics. So france now has its youngest president in the modern era. Macron is just 39 years old, but norah, hell be facing a lot of old problems. That is true. Mark phillips, thank you so much. An olympic champion runner tries something thats never been done before. A trip to the pharmacy can trigger a sticker shock. Americans spent 450 billion with a b on prescription drugs and they rose an average of 9. 2 from 2015. Pharmaceutical Companies Set the list price some of which can be covered by insurance and the price tag can be brought down through rebates and occupiens negotiated by middle coupons negotiated by middle men called pharmacy benefits manager. The largest is express scripts and eight others are lowering out of pocket costs for those without insurance and higher deductibles. Its called inside rx and youre hearing about it on cbs this morning. Dave ricks. Good morning, gentlemen. Good morning. Tim, you found that 33 million americans are paying the full cost of their prescription drugs so what would this plan do . So what this plan does for those 30 million americans is brings together you know, were a middleman but we convened daves company and good rx to come together for the 30 million americans to access significantly lower prices. Theyre essentially going to pay at the pharmacy counter for the 40 drugs in the this program what the Large Insurance Companies typically pay. Why are you doing this . Because we have seen that these patients need help. You know, theyre often in sometimes in between insurance or other reasons. We knew that Companies Like daves would step up if we stepped up. And they need the care. They need the benefits. Is this from corporate responsibility, realizing that a lot of americans now because of the Rising Health care costs have high deductible plans, paying a lot more out of pocket. If you dont do something people are going to get really mad at the Drug Companies . I think thats right. Theyre already mad. Were already using your name in vain. We try to invent new medicines and get them to people who are sick. The system is complicated. We understand that. This initiative which tims company is driving i think is one way that people with high deductible plans or who pay cash with get a significant what big if snaens conditioned that get. Rather than abandon a prescription because they cant afford it. I would see where theyre suspicious. You ear a big expand because lee look at the data. Its when people dont take care of chronic ed karks medication hanltd lee tots like to see us tlaem down. When they have stick err stock, they wang bam this maybe can bridge some people, kroib their description, control their diabetes. Whats the plan between the pharmaceutical companies and others . I think those who run the pbm we provide one for our our provider. We provide it for 70,000. Its to lower dug price systems. Weve been working to make our product available. Timt alluded to this. The idea that some have accused that these pbms are taen. Why not more trance spinltcy. The kiegser Foundation Family did a survey. Almost 90 say they want it. Whos taking the cut . I think what people want is how much will it cost me and how do i get the price moan ermg. They go to good rx. Down load it forring three. 40 on the drug, no cue pounds, get it for the prime. Thaebs per senn ten. How do you intend to get the erie companies on board because how do you approach . W we believe it will say 30 million. Thats why we believe its here. We want to get the word out. Weve had inquiries. What did President Trump say is he engaged in a war against Drug Companies . I hope not. We spent a little bit of time with him in january to educate how it works. We spent 25 of what we sell back on search. The way the system works is drugs are expensive while theyre on patent and we spend a big chunk of money to found fient out they wouldnt comei7bd ya. Then tims company make them base broadly available. Part of it is to pay for all the unsays session, it igs excessi excessive at the same time we can do programs leak this to make it less complicated and less expensive. Eli lilly and two other companies are under investigation for insulin pricing. The cost of that lifesaving drug up 120 over four years. How do you justify that . You spoke about transparency earlier. We public what our actual price change has been in 2009. The problem in this seller is about zero so our price chain is about flat. What accounts for the price going up . What i im saying is price has. Changed. All the actors like esa, anthem and the government which gets grace price on moving insulin has enhas increased. Your saying it hasnt gone up. Thats right. Do pharmacies set the med case. If theres a wei people can walk to a drugstore and not walk await holder their heart because the heart is the most important thing, thats amazing. Four years later she game the s rhodes to freedom. It examines how democracies survive and file and how they finally seize their right and liberty, that right is necessary, right, and inevitable. Its aww also terrifying, chaotic and what follows it is hard, really, really hard. Condoleezza rice joins us at the tachblt good morning. Good morning. I remember a speech you made in cairo in which you said at 60 years my United States pursued stability and now we achieve neither. How are we doing . Youre telling us storying now. Yes. Well, as with anything worth doing, its hard and the jury is out for a very long time, but we receive some successes and we receive some reverses. And one of the things i wanted to do with the boog is to challenge those who say democracy is in recession or democracy is going backward to remember that this is a very long road and that there will be setbacks, but for every turkey with erdogan or every egypt where the arab spring has given way to a military coup, you have a colombia, which has rescued itself from the early state with americas help. You have ken qaa that despite contested elections, considering along a more or less Democratic Path and i want to remind people also that our own history is one of a very, very long road to freedoming anmileanhour dons substitution where my ancestors were once counted as threefifth of man, where my father couldnt vote reliably in 1952 in blame. Now weve had a black president , ive been secretary of state, colin powell has been secretary of state. Sometimes we lose sight of the big picture. You call slavery americas birth defect, which i think is a very poetic way to describe it. Ive never heard it described that way. A birth defect is something thats something with you but also something you can overcome. I think in this case we see that this birth defect of slavery colors the way we look at 50e67 other. Were not a colorblind society. We probably never will be. Sometimes it causes us to look at each other with suspicion and thats at the root of any number of problems including issues of policing that weve been concerned with. So i like to describe it in that way, but i like to remind people every day we get up and we try to make this imperfect democracy a little bit better. Try to include more people and thats americas story. Let me ask you. In this book, you write, americans seem to be experiencing a kind of crisis of confidence about our own democracy, who we are and what we value. Thats true under President Trump . Weve seen further a long time. Americans are losing confidence many the institution and no institution in America Today is really fully trusted and since as i write in this book, democracy is always at that nice edge between chaos and authoritarianism. Democracy is the sweet spot where we channel our concerns, our wants, our desires through institutions. If you were in favor of democracy, what do you as an inspiration do . Thats the question and it raises questions of sovereignty and other issues. Sovereignty should never be a defense for tierney and mistreating of people. First off, you Pay Attention for us. Im a big believer americans have to be strong at home. Americans have to feel confident. But we have learned, i think, the hard way that when we dont champion the rights of people, bad things happen. So no one is unhappy these days. Germany and. Pap wants to challenge those violent in their region and are now people are unhappy about egypt, for example. Yes. But egypt under mubarak one of the things we want to do is when we have friends, of course, were going to have to talk to the egypt president. Just think if mubarak had reformed, maybe there wouldnt be a revolution. You say you felt sorry for him. I felt bad because i met him in 1992. He was deputy mayor of st. Petersburg who was standing at this very fancy party and he was standing all alone in the corner. You describe him as pale and short. But piercing eyes. Do you see him playing a role in our country . I see him as an authoritarian, somebody whos engaged in trying to sub verb democracy in other countries and someone who undoubtedly interfered with our election. Hes an eye for an eye kind of guy. We said in 2011 his election was fraudulent, hes saying yours can be too. Lets not give him the satisfaction that hes caused americans to doubt the legitimacy of our own american prophesy. That would give him the win. Thank you. Her book goes on sale tomorrow. The hbo hit shoppe veep is the most accurate washingtonbased show. Its hilarious. Hes now one of the hosts of the fictitious cbs this morning. He calls on the political context to build his reputation on tv and wins the approval of his prickly cohost. Hes got our name and act spot on. Youre definitely not going to run again in three years. I have no plans to run at this time. And were on in five, four, three stop it, youre a [ bleep ]. We back to cbs this morning. Joining me is jonah ryan of New Hampshire who had a close shave with cancer. We had a brief relationship when she was much younger. You did . Do you think id make a good judge . You like throwing books at people. Im dan mk cain. Im tan eeg p. Do me a favor. Wrap that wire around my neck until im dead. I love this show. We were feeling so flattered you chose cbs to do this show. But it happened by mistake, did it not . A little bit. It was a joke from last season where dan my character sleeps with amys sister because when she tells them that she works at cvs the pharmacy, he thinks its cbs. He said, are youing to work the night shift. I thought, great. You play such a jerk. I use jerk because we cant use the a word. What made you think you could play that . My friend jan houston whos a crafting director in new york, she was handling the show and called me up about seven years ago. She said ive got this great part opposite julia louisdreyfus. Its tricky because hes got to be a jerk but hes got to be likeable. She didnt use the word jerk. No. Any research for your anchor perso persona . I did a little bit. One of the unique things about our shoerks its not ripped from the headlines. No one is is up potioned to sup in particular or copy the show. You watched our show . Oh, yeah. I walked in, day one, the set is remarkable. Graphics, everything. Everything. This is a satire. Is it . It might be a documentary. It might be. Its a comedy. In terms of what are you trying to say about Morning Television . Oh, man. One of the fun things we discussed in early days of veep, its a workplace comedy. It could be any industry. It was making life of that was mary tyler moore. Exactly. Now its sort of funny, weve sort of staying away from it until now. The obvious connection between politics and the world of broadcast journalism there was a very good show on hbo called newsroom. Oh, yeah. I loved that too. Whats interesting is the democrats think youre talking about them. The republicans think youre talk about them. Thats right. What happens when you go out in the world . Its great. We got invited to the white house correspondents dinner. We got incredible access to paem on the hill. Cameo rolessome. They all want cameo role. I remember the former governor of maryland wanted on. Because he was returning for president. I think he considered it. He wanted to come on and look coolful we said no one looks cool oven our show. Omalley. Yeah. The people we have met, the republicans say, oh, its so refreshing to see a show go after the democrats and the democrats will say, keep sticking it to the republicans. You remember a long time ago there was a show laughin, and Richard Nixon went on and was laughed at. Richard ales idea was to soften him up. Tell us theest to win over your coanchor jay mk kay. First of all Margaret Cohen replaced her. Its no small feat. We have a weird process. Were all bizarre maniacs and she democrat a great job jumping in. Its been fun. Hes a climber and a cad and a womanizer and i think he looks at this as a potential for both. He said i havent slept with a women over 30 since i was 14 because i needed a grade. Hes a cad. The writing is so good. So spontaneous and off the cuff. Do you rehearse a lot . We do, which is unusual for a television show. From our early days wed get scripts fork ur five episodes in advance, which never happens in tv. And we would be requested in london. Our original show, the writers were british. The writers would go and rewrite the scripts with our improv and so through this distillation process it gave it a natural feel. Its been fun. It may have been a mistake starting with cbs. It gives us such a kick to watch. Youre fun to watch. Great. Im glad. Ahead, how a pearl harbor survivor celebrated his 96th birthday with a leap of faith.
