Scene. And, we have new information. And, having covered this all day, it is a completely different seeing and feeling. And, lets get to those new numbers. And, they are focusing on the confirmed death toll stands at 36. There are still many more questions lets talk about identifying those victims 11 of them have been identified and eight people have been identified. We are waiting on three people who have been identified but their names have not been released.  the cause of the fire is still a question. The origin of the fire now investigators say that they do believe that they have it. And, the cause of this fire, there is no confirmation just yet. Im going to bring in my colleague. I used that word, and we certainly dont use hellacious lightly. And, lets focus on the investigation first from what you know. Yes, terrible news after that first incident. She said calmly absolutely expect the fatalities to rise. She had claimed that they had searched 70 of the warehouse that caught fire. Im going to take this from you. They searched 70 of the building. But they cant continue the search. They had to call a work stop. Thats because of the structural stability. The front wall is leaning in, that is enough to cause a concern. They are fearful. And, the Fire Department. And, if that building collapses. In the work thats going on the recovery work that is happening. And they completely stopped work here. And, they have recovered 36 bodies, and the front, it was leading. And, they are not going to speed up this recovery effort to get ahead of the weather. They are going to continue to do the work as safely as possible. And, we learn more about this possible origin and you can hear what they had to say based on the damage in the building have some areas, and it is wrapped in the back of the building, we can see atf and the local investigators are still identifying the section of the building that is the area of origin. This is what the inside of the warehouse and this is what it looked like before that fire started. And county comes to the origin of the fire. And, they dont know what started it. I asked the chief is there anything that we rule out given how hot the fire burned. And she says, we dont know if it was electrical, we dont know if it was gas that. We dont know anything about a possible cause of a fire. And, they havent figured out whether yet the concert or party was happening on the first or second floor. Those are all questions that they still have. For now, they have not been able to continue their work. And, it could be several hours before theyre able to go back in. And you get the sense, that so many people are so eager easy even desperate for answers. The number of people dead, i am in contact with a couple people who are saying, i think that my coworker may have been at the party. I havent heard anything. And, its pushing up against the safety concern and we have to mention it has been very tough in the beginning they do not know how many people were in the building. It is not a sanctioned events. They do not know if it is 100 people, or dozens of people. So its hard for them to know any definitive numbers. One thing that i want to mention about the timeline, they said that the battalion chief said at 8 am they will be meeting with the Structural Engineers, and they have been onsite with them throughout the entire process. And, they have that was some of the recovery workers to figure out a plan on how to stabilize or reinforce the building or the part of the building that it appears to be unstable. I hope to have a plan in place by noon. And by noon and 2 pm, thats when they hope to resume the recovery work. Thank you so much. We will see later on. I remember back when we were covering this, its breaking news on saturday, we were hearing from officials that it may be up to 48 hours before theyre able to get inside of the warehouse. And to come through thoroughly. We know that 48 hours has essentially come and gone. So the timeline is being pushed back but its all for the safety of the workers. Lets talk about the fact that the sun is beginning to rise, i am in the fruitvale district. So many of you know it. We are 5 miles away from the studios. It is a working class neighborhood. And, it is home to so many artists, teachers, families. And, well beyond the have been coming to the scene of that devastating fired. Fire. They have been leaving notes, balloons, flowers, mementos, so many people are creating a spontaneous public memorial. Certainly, there are people who believe that they have lost a loved one in the fire are coming to the scene. And, complete strangers are also coming to the scene. And they feel compelled in some way. We see this happen so often. The memorials popping up at a sidewalk or streetcorner, and it turns into a place where they can come in and gather. Lets talk more about those people who are either too but we who are either confirmed to have died, or believed to have perished. We are doing our very best to learn about them. You have been working inside the newsroom, jeanine, to learn as much as we can. It has been excruciating for these families. 11 have been positively identified and they have been notified. And, you have the photos and information about many of them. She was a 22yearold transgendered woman who was a dj and a member and a band. She was represented by deus wreckers and they released a statement saying, she was without a doubt one of the most talented and loving people we have never known. We will never be the same. David klein, a 24yearold was also a victim. His brother posted a message thanking friends and supporters saying, we love you, we will be with you will be with us always. They posted rest in peace messages for nicholas hall. Coworker say that he was a talented artist about to work in book design. There are also photos online remembering sarah hoedown, she was 30 years old hoda, she was 30 years old. Travis huff, had joined mix tape artist over the center. They said that he was in Expressive Art therapist to help children. They remembered him as a pleasure to work with and say, that his spirit and creativity light to every interaction. They shared their condolences for Donna Kellogg, a 32year old woman from oakland who they called a wonderful woman. Friends say that she worked at highway or Coffee Roasters on their Facebook Page. They posted that they asked the media to respect the difficult process and let us grief. Thank you to all who have shown love and support. Brandon chase, was originally from hayward, friends say that that 32yearold was also went by chase. Under his photo, it says i am ours. The Coroners Office has identified a 17yearold whose name is not being released. He will continue to find more information about these victims. We are told that warnings will be released later today. Thank you for that. Again, as we wait to hear more from the authorities, we are continuing our search in the newsroom from information about those victims. And, there are still so many questions, so many people. I have been a part of it, and i have also witnessed people texting each other. Have you heard, do you know . I tried to call her mom, they didnt answer. That sense of desperation is happening and before we bring it back to you, i will mention that this is a monday morning. Its a start of the new work week. It happened overnight. Friday into saturday and so many of us were in shock and grief. And, now that as people are making their way to sort of their routine if you will, of the work week. Or the school week, you can sense that there is a bracing for getting to the office and im talking with my friend and we are wondering about this young lady. Or, we get to school and the teachers may have known someone. And, if a very difficult morning. And, the investigation is still so fresh. We heard from someone who has a freelance guy who they think was inside at that party. Its going to be a very hard few days. Stash shes going to be out there throughout the morning. Thank you. Lows 30s, 40s, and 50s, but there is tremendous moisture coming across the pacific. Its not too bad for others. And, but northerly breeze will kick in tonight and tomorrow. Thats were some of the coldest air is coming in. Some areas are on the mild side. The peninsula, 40s to 50s. I mean, theres a big spread. And, the coldest air first. And all this moisture coming in. It looks like its going to play into our weather. The morning fog, mix of sun and clouds, and cooler high temperatures, colder tomorrow. All right. The fog that was there, when we started broadcasting you can barely see and now its pretty clear. Its backed up. And, we are also looking at a commute that is going to be busy on the san mateo bridge getting over to the 101. The fog seems to be there on the peninsula as you drive through. And, we have heavy traffic. Northbound 280, there is an accident 101, and if you want to do that instead, i do want to mention, we had an earlier crash in petaluma at the south. Those lanes are open. Near the boulevard, down to central san rafael. At 7 13 am, lets go back to the desk. All right. We know we have new details about the truck transition. Coming up, the latest trump transition. More people, we have been told have been killed and, jd nelson with the Sheriffs Department. First of all, our condolences we understand, one of your colleagues lost someone in that fire. And, im sure that you are hearing from people who are waiting just anxiously because there are so many people who are missing. Right, thats an unfortunate thing and you have a lot of people who are in the unfortunate position who have to receive a terrible phone call. And, its hard for our people to deliver that call. What kind of advice you have for people . Because we just heard that press conference. The building is not safe to go inside. Theres going to be Structural Engineers coming in but they dont expect to go in. It sounds, like a wall is going to take some time. So for people who are waiting. I mean, there are on there obviously watching us anxiously. Whats the best thing that they can be doing . Will need to know that the Fire Department has done a fantastic job to discover that is the way it is. And, try to put a stop to it to remain for everybody to remain safe. And, the second part of your question unfortunately, we can continue to work on the identification of the 36 people that we currently have but the recovery effort at this point would be stopped. You are also looking at a possible criminal investigation. Can you talk about that . And thats a better question for the Police Department or district attorneys office. We are functioning as a Coroners Office. How does this compare, i mean that the Fire Department has talked about comparing this to you know, the Oakland Hills fire, and 9 11, it is just such a difficult process. What can your crews do at this point, as you wait to go into this building . Its funny, what is old and new, and the situation happened exactly the same at loma prieta. So, they put a stop to the search at loma prieta to show up the that cypress structure because they were afraid that it would collapse. We had to stand down for a while and you just have to wait it out. And then, its the right call and its a proven call. And, when youre on the scene you have the latest information. Thank you for having me. I hope that you will come back as well. I know that you cant talk about the investigation. And, the cause of the fire still waiting to get more information and, probably wont be able to get that until they can go back inside the building. So, we will continue with our Team Coverage on the deadly warehouse fire in oakland. Right now, we want to help you get out of the door, for people getting ready to go. How does traffic look like its going to be busy all over the east bay. And, starting off with the east bay we go to highway 24. And we have heavy traffic getting to the lafayette to orinda. We have earlier problems on highway 24 and, this morning, its going to be extra heavy. Gateway boulevard, the off ramp, and slow traffic and they might even have a new problem or this is lingering from the old problem. You can see that traffic is backed up for at least 25 minute delays getting onto the bridge. And, you want to mention that highway 80 is really slow from the hercules area all the way down into berkeley because of earlier issues. Nevada to san rafael, slow traffic. And, we have slow traffic especially on 280. And, now at 7 20 am. Lets bring in steve higher clouds cut areas the fog, very thickened spot thick in spots. And, the higher card deck making for a sunrise. A lot of cloud cover coming in over the next couple of days and that will lead to rain. We have to deal with cold air, and some of it is in place for some. And, we end up with 50s under partly cloudy. And, cold air first of the north, working in later today into tuesday. And, a very deep moisture plume coming up from the Hawaiian Islands. That will plan to our weather, wednesday, thursday, and friday. And, when that lets, it might take a while. Lifts, it might take a while. I expect this to pick up tonight as the dry cold front gets a little bit closer. Tomorrow i think that you will really feel it. Santa rosa 39, 50 palo alto, and there are some areas that are really stopped in have that fog. Santa cruz is at 43 that fog. Santa cruz is at 4340s 50s from santa clara, cupertino, and the coldest air to the north is going to stay north and east, it will get some of that over us and really i think that the bigger deal is that coming up from the Hawaiian Islands. The problem is, for wednesday into thursday, where that snow level line will go up but theres going to be freezing rain. And, i will talk about on wednesday, and theres a lot of cloud cover coming in. And, a lot of a cooling trend. And, the rain starts on wednesday and goes thursday into friday and could be very heavy amounts to the north. And it continues to come together and showing one forecast model. The european model is not as wet as this. So, even with that you look at it, it looks like a wet pattern is starting to come in. And, the wind will pick up, cooler temperatures are coming in as the cool air to the north. And, youre not getting brushed by the moisture coming in on wednesday and thursday. And, temperatures will come up, upper 50s lower 60s. This is a real trick that you called in the sierra. Okay. And you have that cold air, overriding that, you could have freezing rain up there. We do have Team Coverage for you this morning. We did learn this morning that 36 people are now confirmed dead. They do expect to find more victims unfortunately, inside of the building but they are waiting for Structural Engineers to be on the site in the next half hour. So duty though to determine if and when they can go inside the building, what needs to make it safer the Recovery Efforts. They will check in, she is out there on the scene as well. And, steve, theres music theres news and the weather clock yes, theres fog for some. Increasing clouds, cold air working. And the low cloud deck. It has lifted a little for some. I know that mark said, it is really foggy. There are some spots where is foggy. And it looks like cold air. And rain is on the way. 30s, 40s, 50s, some thick fog in spots. The cloud cover is streaming out from the southwest. And, we have to deal with a little bit of that cooler air. And, then we will focus our attention on the west in that cloud cover. 30s, 40s and 50s. And there are big differences. A good 10 degrees for some. And, there are others that are a little bit cooler. Theres cold air there. And, we will get a little bit of that. And it looks like a pretty good rain event. The morning fog, some sun, in the wind will pick up a little bit later. That colder air will work its way in. Sal, some people are saying, im going to kansas city for that raiders game. Is going to be clear, but it will be cold. It will be about 18. Good morning everybody, this is a look at 80 which has been really terrible. Two different incidents, west 80 at st. Paulo dan road. The other one, is blocking lanes from hercules down to the spot. And as more so traffic after that. His latest accident involved a motorcyclist and traffic will be super busy. This freeway is going to be slow even after they removed that accident. Lets take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. That is backs up all the way to the macarthur maze. The trip from oakland to san jose is taking a better part of the hour. The Silicon Valley commute, all of this getting up to the west valley. And, theyre all very busy. At 7 33 am, lets go back to the desk. Unfortunately our top story is the continuing coverage of the tragic warehouse fire. The new information this morning, 36 people are now confirmed dead. That number is expected to go up when search and recovery crews are able to go back inside the building. Yes, our colleague, you are out there now. Whats happening now click reporter it is a slow, long waiting game. As you can see, the podium is behind me. The newest information that we had came in the form of a News Conference, which we brought you life at 6 am live at 6 am. And, so many are focused on this. It is the number of people confirmed dead. It stands at 36. The number has not changed in the past 90 minutes. Those are the number of people who are confirmed dead Officials Say that they do ask that to find more victims. They tell us that they have searched through 70 of that warehouse. They have identified 11 of those victims who they had found inside. The Sheriffs Office says most recently, identified those names, it will not be sent out until later. Family members have been appropriately notified. We are giving the Family Members an opportunity to update other Family Members to notify them and to give them an opportunity to bring together desk grief together. Again, city officials believe that they are going to find more victims inside of the house. They cant go back into the building due to safety concerns. They say that they saw a section of the building that was leaning about 3 inches. But just that 3 inches was enough for them to call off the search. For us, firefighters are working under a wobbly potentially collapsing exterior walls it is extremely dangerous. We will not put our firefighters in danger at this point. We will not put the Alameda County sheriffs stash sheriff sheriff in that situation with us. Reporter there is still a lot of work to do, engineers are expected back to figure out how to make it safer for searchers. That should happen by the afternoon. We also know that atf agents told them to specifically avoid an area near the back of the building because it is a key location that they believe was the point of origin. They do not want anything disturbed or moved or in any way compromised as they were to find out exactly how this fire started. We just heard steves forecast as we work towards the work week. Theres a possibility of rain by midweek and investigators say that that threat of rain will not rush them at all. They say that they are going to take just as much time as they need regardless of what Mother Nature brings. Certainly, rain would affect the scene. It would affect the ease of moving about. In no way, while the rain caused them or force them to speed up their investigation. I will go back to that initial estimate that we were given. 48 hours for crews to get in and searched the entire building. That 48 hours have come and gone. There are concerns of leaning and safety that is causing not to draw out. Lets turn to another aspect of the investigation. Alex savage has been working on this angle of our reports, and were learning more about the man who managed the ghost ship artist collective. Arent we . Reporter yes, and were learning more about the history of this building. Even before the deadly fire, they were looking into the possibility of illegal construction at this warehouse. We are also finding out more about the man who ran this. The 46yearold derek ion, we have learned from Court Records that he is currently serving three years of probation after being found guilty of receiving towing property. stolen property. Stolen property. And how you can see the video here. He built this artist community. And he went to the Living Spaces to a number of people. Them former tenants say that there were even five rvs parked inside of the warehouse that people lived in. Now, the manager is facing somewhat of a backlash over his response to the deadly fire in a facebook post, he wrote among other things, everything that i have worked so hard for is gone and he never made mention of any of the people who died in the fire. Over the past few years the city has come out to this warehouse three times responding to reports of trash and debris inside of that artist collective. We talked this morning with the councilman who knows the manager of this collective. I have met him several times my complaints. Whether what he is doing on the sidewalk and street what did he say quick you know, he did clean it up, he got upset. I had the police come with me to make sure that he removed the debris. Reporter the owner of the building least this space to ion to use as an artist collective and has said it was not meant to be a place for people to live. They also point out that he never got a permit for that party and concert that happened friday night that ended with this deadly fire that thus far has left 36 people dead. We have been talking with some of the former tenants who lived inside of this collective. It was a place of a number of people called home and a lot of people pointed out that a place like this exists because of the housing crisis here in the bay area. A lot of people who have lived here in the spaces say that it was the only affordable place that they could find to live right. That is a store that we have heard throughout oakland San Francisco in other major urban cities. This is all that we have had. And, lets stay inside of the warehouse if you will. You brought stories to the people who were inside previous were also hearing from people who escaped the fire. I woke up because there was smoke everywhere. I woke up in my entire spaces filled with smoke and i looked over and i could see the orange glow and i put on my coat in my shoes and there is a wall of fire. And, it just heading to the front door. And, he was all ready getting dizzy. And, calling for help, but it felt like and i sort of went straight to the front door. And, as i managed to get outside, they were starting to come out and look at whats going on. And, i started to call 911. In a minute after i got out of the building, the power went out. She says that the people who got out into the Fire Department to get help. They responded within three minutes. As far as coming together, people sharing their emotions, their hopes and thoughts, there was a candlelight vigil planned for tonight, the vigil starts at 8 am. They are being asked to meet at the pergola. And, lets talk about the families directed for the Alameda County Coroners Bureau along with the American Red Cross are still operating and relatives and friends are trying to find if they were missing or inside. They can go to that center on 12 street. And, other resources are available. An important note, theyre asking them not to call the bureau of information for the victims unless you believe that a Family Member is a fire victim. They say that they have been overwhelmed with collars. Anyone can get the latest available information at the citys website. You can also get recorded information. Were going to see if valley can get a hold of her. We are working on getting a chap in the the oakland Police Department. He has been working here throughout the Police Department. The deadly fire, you just saw the congresswoman barbara lee, the mayor maybe shaft. They are on libby. They are on the scene giving and getting more information. We have learned that there are 36 people confirmed dead. The number is expected to go up. 11 people have been positively identified out of those 36. Theyre continually working to identify families desperately waiting for information. Work has stopped at the scene. One wall is leaning inwards. It poses a terrible safety hazard for those who have been searching the structure. The recovery crews, its just not safe for them to go inside. Investigators also believe that they have located the section of the building where the fire started. More on that, will continue. Joining us now, is the menlo park Fire Protection chief harold. Thank you for joining us. We appreciate you being here with us. Thank you. Talk about, you have been on many of these major scenes. Can you talk about the recovery effort, and what is ahead . Well, youre seeing it right now. After several days, the building essentially being heated up to thousands of degrees. Then, the amount of water that they had to use to put out that fire. The Structural Integrity as they are going in and removing that debris, although it is methodical and careful, they have lower ductile. They can destabilize the structure. Abs they took things apart, it puts stress on the walls. You have to have a copy oakland Fire Department is one of those rescue teams for the United States. So because of that they have a lot of Resources Available to them. Theyve Structural Engineers, they can shore up laws and so forth. Oakland is different from any Fire Department that they have that asset directly available to them. And they have experienced personnel. Thats the good news. That they caught it. They took safety precautions to bring people out. The weather is coming this week, im sure that they are concerned about it. But, at this point, that was the right decision to make. They will reevaluate, and im sure that they will continue to work. And as dave mentioned, you know that we have talked to over the years about the search and Recovery Efforts that you have been involved in. Your team, from menlo park. The cyprus building, and how quickly do you think you said that oakland fire has those resources in Structural Engineers. But how quickly do you think that they can get the spelling stabilize, so that they can go in, certainly there are so many families who are just anxiously waiting for more information. You know, that depends. I am not there, they are making those decisions. But i think that you have so many experienced people that we have worked with, you know on different disasters, that they can bring that that they may art he had set up. I know that is tough. It is tough for everybody. But one of the things that can happen, as you go multiday operations, but you have to be careful that people dont get tired and complacent. That they feel, that the building hasnt had a problem so if the great task. Thus it is a grave task. It is a great task. But you have to slow down for origin for evidence, the point of origin, and safety. I know that is a waiting game. I know that its tough. His longterm implications for those who are doing this task as well. But patience is necessary and i saw in some of the press conferences that i watched. People with 1 million questions from all over the world. It is stressful for them, they are trying to manage many different things. I think that they are doing a fantastic job, given the circumstances. You do not want to rush debris removal, Recovery Efforts, just because of the negative implications for personnel that are in there. I would imagine. Thank you so much for joining us. So, he said its very hard to determine how soon they will be able to get back into that building. They will continue to update that story. And, out on the scene talking to all of the people involved directly. So, we will get that information as soon as we can. And, we are also going to check our commute. And, the macarthur maze. And, traffic is going to be busy if youre driving to the bay bridge. And, you can see traffic is continuing to be very busy along the corridor to the bay bridge toll plaza. No major problems theres. And, even these carpool lanes seem very slow which means that there could be something on the bridge just after the metering lights that are not supposed to be there. And of course, the biggest backup is 80. And, its still clearing here at san pablo. The second incident at the morning, and a lot of slow traffic trying to get out. At 7 50 am lets bring in steve. And, we have had some of sun come in. And, take your pick. There have been areas to los gatos, and maybe you as you also. And, clouds increasing, with the sun breaking through. We have a combination of the low and high clouds. Some of that morning fog gives way to partly cloudy skies. 50s on the low, we will end up with 50s on the high. Plenty going on, it looked like originally, the last week that we might have a dry forecast. Well, if it wasnt for this moisture coming up which it didnt pick up on, others did, some didnt, and it would be going into a dryer but cooler breezy plat pattern. And, im not going were not going to get a lot of it. And, maybe today and tomorrow. Wednesday morning can be quite cold. And, 40s on the temperatures. Going up a little bit for some. Generally 40s for everybody here. And, 38 sacramento. 32. And it is 32 there, very cold. And probably will have a little bit more to this and swing to the south. That will impact us. What we are learning about some of those victims as the death toll continues to rise. And were talking to people have been inside of the building. I just spoke with the chaplain who says it is a devastating scene. How they are trying to cope with this. More on the investigation. Sir . This comes to us in the form of a News Conference that we brought live on the air 36 victims that is the confirmed number of dead. 11 victims have been identified. That number is different from the eight that we were bringing you up until this morning. Free new names have yet to be released. They say they believe they have found the origin of the fire. The cause is still a mystery. That is something that investigators are working towards. This morning we heard from fire officials that tell me it is a work stoppage at the scene and thats for the workers own safety. There was a lien discovered in part of the building. We are going to bring an alley in a minute. But first, pam and mike, as the sun rises, a lot of people are coming to the neighborhood is a lot of people are also heading towards the office and the school they go for the first time usually the typical monday morning is anything but. And, i saw you working on saturday covering the story, im curious now that you are there, what has that been like for you . Personally . Reporter it is almost surreal. We have covered oakland for the past 12 years and i have been to the neighborhood not only on work assignments but for family fun. The Cinco De Mayo we come here, and to be here when the entire scene is surrounded by reporters and trucks it is surreal. Surreal to know that such a long time working class neighborhood, home to immigrant families and artists at least right now, it is being defined by this weekends tragedy. Thank you. And, 8 04 am, lets go back to the desk. Thank you. I want to go back to 31st in international. The deadly oakland warehouse fire. And, i noticed congresswoman barbara lee is there at the scene. Reporter yes, they were hoping to talk with her. She wanted to get briefed with the very latest information and alley is working on that. And i saw that you had been talking to a member of the Alameda County Sheriffs Department. They are on scene. But, there is also a new investigative tact that they are taking as well. Yes, they brought out the criminal investigative unit. And, they were complaining that it is a common procedure any time that you have these major advance that events. On the other hand, anytime a have a criminal investigation, criminal charges thats why were waiting to see some of those information that they are gathering at the site. And, 36 people confirmed dead. 36 bodies recovered. Burnedout warehouse. This is video of the work efforts that was happening with the heavy equipment until it stopped just after midnight this morning. It had to stop because of some concerns because of the stability of the building. One of the front walls, the corner while is leaning about 3 inches. And, it is too dangerous basically, too risky for the workers to continue to go into the building. They do expect that the fatalities will increase. And so far the battalion chief says that they are concerned about rain the forecast and, they are going to do it as meticulously as possible. The natural desire for firefighters in anyone in Public Service is to quickly get and mitigate the situation. And we will not be going faster to get ahead of the rain. And, we will be just as methodical, just as analytical to make sure that they are successful in a full recovery the next few days. You know what youre looking at right now are the pictures of the inside of the warehouse. And, before this happened 11 30 pm on friday night. We did learn more about the origin of this fire. The fire chief says that they believe based on the way that the metal steel beams are bent, that they believe that this fire started in the back of that warehouse. They dont know if it started on the first or second floor. Theyre not exactly sure where the concert or party that was happening on friday night was in this building. So they dont know they just know that they are isolated at the back of the building at the possible origin of the fire. So, there is still a lot of work to be done. And because of this work stoppage, theres no Construction Equipment going. Theres nobody inside of the building. And, what we have been told is that the latest plan is for Structural Engineers to come and meet any moment now with the atf and some of the firefighters to come up with a plan to stabilize the building. What does that mean . What means that they might end up having to bring in some outside structures, outside equipment to shore up the building. Before they can deem it safe enough to go back in and continue this work of retrieving the bodies. Yes, you definitely get the sense that rescue crews have been year of roundtheclock. And, certainly you can even tell that their hearts are heavy. And, we should also mention that Structural Engineers are part of this process the entire time. Its clear by looking at the process the entire building thats why theyre going to be working closely with them to figure out what they need to do to reinforce the building. Yes, thank you so much. We are going to be talking about the fact that people have been coming together. It is different being here and a lot of people work and live in go to school at that district and a lot of people have been coming here to this neighborhood from other parts of oakland in the bay area to leave their condolences. Sometimes it feels better to be with other people who feel the same way that you do. And, theres a memorial set up to the victim. And, complete strangers dont know anybody who is directly affected by the fire but they certainly feel that there is a very heavy feeling happening here. Lets talk more about the confirmed victims that we have. As a have been releasing those names we have been doing our very best to learn more. And to learn about their lives and janine you have been working on this aspect. And im struck by the fact that so many of them, are young, every picture that we see them in they are smiling, you hear from their loved ones and they say that they had their whole lives ahead of them. Absolutely, its so sad. 11 of those victims have been positively identified. Many of them were musicians and artists. Not all of their names have been released but we have been able to gather information on those who have been identified. David klein is 24 and from oakland. His brother posted a message thinking friends and supporters saying, we love you, he will be with us always. Friends posted rest in peace, for nick gomez a 25yearold from coronado california. They report that coworker say he was a talented artist about to work in book design. Travis huff was from oakland. He had joined mix tape management. His colleagues posted online that he was an Expressive Arts therapist to help children and the east bay. They remembered him as a pleasure to work with. And that his spirit and creativity brought light to every reaction. Brandon was originally from hayward. They say the 32yearold also went by chase and under his photo, it says i am art. There are also photos online remembering sarah hoda, she was 30 years old. Her friend posted that she was a teacher, a gardener, working at a school. She was a good hardworking person. She was a compassionate person and decent. Friends also shared condolences for the 32yearold Donna Kellogg who was from oakland. They call for a wonderful woman. They say that she worked at high wire coffee roaster. And on their Facebook Page they posted that they asked the media to respect the difficult process of absorbing the four of what has happened and let us grief. Thank you to all who have should love and support. To the 22yearold who is a transgendered woman from oakland who was a dj and a member in a band. She was represented ideas records and they released a statement saying, she was without a doubt one of the most talented and loving people that we have ever known. He will never be the same. The Coroners Office also identified a 17yearold whose name is not being released. We are going to continue to find out more information about these victims. We are told by police that more names may be released later today and of course we will find that more bodies might be recovered. That is if they are able to get inside of the building. Thank you. Reporter again, the search has beens best has been halted. There are safety concerns for all of the recovery and rescue workers. We were able to speak with Alameda County sheriff member, jd nelson he talked to us about the search has been temporarily halted. This situation happened exactly the same at loma prieta. When i was there and at the Oakland Hills fire. So they had put a stop to the search to show her up the freeway sure up the freeway because they were afraid that it would collapse. So we had to stand down for a while. And, we had to wait it out. And, if the right call. And its a prudent called. Its a very difficult situation for sheriffs deputies and firefighters who are on the scene overnight for countless hours. He will mention that the son of one of his colleagues at the Sheriffs Department is one of the people who died in the fire and certainly it touches them personally, as such as the professionally, we will talk more about this throughout the later hours. And, i hear the atf and the investigators want to go ahead in a certain area and cordon off the area and start their investigation. And, then when the building is security and they can get out of the area then the rest of the Recovery Team will go back in and probably get the recovery of the victims. And as we look at the victim of the fire, investigators have gone in sent. They house they have found bodies, does that tell you about this fire . From the photos that we have seen of the interior of the building, it was very kind compartmentalize. There were very small spaces. Everybody says that they had a space that they lives in and if you are confused and they smoking environment where you cant see your hand in front of your state or her face, you could easily get lost your face, you could easily get lost. They were looking for a way out of it and as they are looking for, that gas in the smoke levels they take one breath and thats pretty much succumbing to the fire. How quickly does that take over the room . In a building like that, probably they said the Fire Department was there in three minutes. So from the time that they called in three minutes after that original call. We are not talking wouldnt probably 10 minutes. Its probably within the first five minutes that the smoke is probably starting to overcome the building. We heard the mayor libby talking about want to make sure that these sort of places are safe. And how can you possibly go in and what can be done to prevent this from happening . Well, there are building codes and fire codes that are made for reason and they are there because those codes have been put into place. And, those coats are to protect life from property. They want to make sure that the apple theres ample doors, and that this only had two exits and it might have been fine for a warehouse. But if you had people staying there there might not be enough people. And, you couldve had pallet stairs and the and theres nowhere to go pick there are makeshift stairs. One person had said that they had a small board that they had to crawl up with little notches. I mean, thats obviously not permitted or promoted. And rvs, we talk about propane tanks, stuffed furniture everywhere. Its amazing. And its a firefighters that youre trying to go in there. Lets get to steve. Yes, the first cold air comes in and it looks like clouds and rain, wednesday and thursday. Fog is the big story here this morning. Its been dancing around, there were areas that had at 4 am. Also an increase in high clouds. And, as a lot of high clouds on the way we have to deal with cold air coming down. That will start to filter into day really cold air north and east and its going to stay north and east. We will just get a little bit of that working its way in. But this looks like its on its way. Timing is a bit tough and where it ends up that plume of moisture showing signs of being over the bay area. And, morning fog cost sun and clouds, and cold air on the way for tuesday into tuesday night. And, 31. What would you say . Its a normal commute. Good morning to you. We have been looking at a big backup. Not for any particular reason its just been very slow. Things are beginning to ease up. Traffic leaving the east bay getting out to marin its a little bit better. 80 has been kind of a hassle. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza we do have a backup stretching for about 15 minutes. And, that Silicon Valley commute has been tough we have had a number of accidents and a lot of slow traffic on those major approaches. We do have a car and fire reporting northbound. And we also have a new accident northbound 85 so the south bay commute is definitely not over and it may be getting worse. At 8 32 am lets go back to the desk. And are big story is more about the deadly warehouse fire. The official number of confirmed death has increased to 36 in San Francisco School District just confirmed that the 17 old victim and that fire was a student at the roof school for the arts. The chronicle is identifying him as a junior at the school. Lets go to our colleague who was at the scene and we have more what happened. Here, we understand that authorities are not planning on briefing us with information anytime between before noon. So that means that we have about 3. 5 more hours and these are the latest numbers that we have here those 36 confirmed dead that you just mentioned. Thats still the same as it has been. 36 confirmed dead, they do expect to find more victims. Authorities are able soon to get back is that warehouse and, they had to pull back the researchers because they believed that they warehouse at this point is unsafe. About hundred percent of the warehouse has been searched and again, with about 30 less you can expect that they will find more victims. And the atf did ask them to avoid a specific area towards the back of the warehouse building because it is believed to be the origin of the fire sites. We have some areas where this is actually twisted and wrapped in the back of the building where you can see fire spread atf and our local investigators have identified the section of the building that is the area of origin. They believe that they have the site of origin they do not know what caused the fire. Search teams have been ordered to stay out of the buildings has its just not safe to be inside. Engineers say that it is a possible risk of collapse. For us working under a wobbly potentially collapsing exterior wall it is extremely dangerous. We will not put our firefighters in danger at this point and we will not put the sheriff in that situation with us. They say that they hope to figure out how to make the building safe by this afternoon. They expect recovery to be done in the next few days. They say that they will not rush even though there is a set of rain moving in later on midweek. And, going back to that 48 hours. And, 48 hours has come and gone and we have about a third of the warehouse that is left to search. The investigation from the physical standpoint is at a standstill because the building is not safe. Talk about the fire we have Sony Pictures of what the artist looked like. And we were also able to speak with a woman who escaped the fire and hear how she describes her escape on the first floor of that artist collective. I woke up because there was smoke and i woke up and my space was filled with smoke and i looked over and i could see the orange glow and i got on my coat and my shoes and i look and theres just a wall of fire. Its well over 8 feet high and i just started heading for the front door i was are ready getting dizzy and lightheaded and i was calling for help and it felt like you know nobody could hear me. The music was going and i just sort of went straight for the front door and i managed to get outside and other people were starting to come out and look at what was going on and i started to call 911 and about a minute after i got out of the building the power went out. Reporter she said the people who were able to get out ran to the Fire Department. They say responded to the scene within three minutes. We know that many people have been coming to the scene to see what is happening. Im here the Media Briefing area and is blocked off it is interesting traffic is slowing but here it is nothing but media and officials. And if you would like summer to go to share your feelings a vigil is planned for tonight at oakland they chimeric right in the lake lake merrick set to begin at 8 pm. Grief counseling is available and other resources. Throughout the weekend we saw people bringing food and sandwiches really anything that can be of any comfort. Its important to note that they are not asking to call the bureau for information unless you have something to report. Lets talk about someone has been serving for a long time the last hours were able to speak with the menlo park or protection chief harold who is working with urban search and rescue efforts we spoke with him after the Oklahoma City bombing and 95, after the september 11 disaster in new york he says that oakland Fire Department suddenly has a lot of experience dealing with terrible things and in a case like this is going to take a lot of time to get to the bottom of what happened. I know that its tough. Its tough for everybody. One of the things that can happen is you go the operation just be careful that people dont start to get tired and start to get complacent and that they feel that the building hasnt had a problem so they keep their heads down and its a great task grave task but you have to slow down for evidence purposes and slow it down to find the point of evidence origin and for their own safety. I know that its a waiting game and i know that its tough. Reporter as you heard, you do not want to compound the tragedy by putting rescue and recovery workers lives in danger. Lets talk more about the building. I know that beginning saturday afternoon we were able to find and share pictures of what it looked like on the inside. We are learning more about the building and the man who ran this collective as for the building, city officials even before the fire has been investigating the possibility of illegal construction inside. Some former tenant tell us that they saw faulty wiring now the men who ran the space this collective was the 46yearold derek ion alameda. They describe his behavior as at times erratic. This is a you tube video of the man that many people simply knew as derek. He built this community and rented out Living Spaces inside to various people. Some former tenant even say that there were five rvs parked inside. What is known as the ghost ship collective. And, they were living inside of the rvs. One of the tenants who survived the fire says that on friday night when the flames and there was almost no time. And, attending the concert and party at the time. And, they say that the ghost ship collective exists in part to the bay area housing crisis. And, San Francisco has always credited itself on being a home for artists and writers. And, they dont fit in anywhere else and over the years, theres nowhere else to go. There is no way that we can afford. And, theres no one that can afford that. And, spaces like this, it needs to keep happening. And, the manager is facing a backlash. And, to a facebook post, he wrote, everything i have worked so hard for is gone and the people who were killed in the fire. And they least this space to use as an are collected and made it clear was not meant to be a place for people to live. They say they never got a permit for the party and we also have learned, in terms of his background. That derek ion right now, is in the middle of serving a middle thats a threeyear probation sentence. He is on probation after being found guilty of receiving stolen property. And, i saw them a moment ago and said, it is terrible inside. And, today and what happened is still very a difficult day. And, coming up we will talk to him. And i know that you said, we know the mayor is out there and you heard from her on saturday. And we heard her say, this is a very it puts oakland and a tricky spot. Wanting to make sure that places like this are safe. And, certainly its an overwhelming task. And, being able to look back through the records. And it was an artist artist collective shut down. And, i believe on Martin Luther king, and when that happened, you heard from People Living in sign. Inside. They say that the latest was just after 11 pm. And, the other shooting happened early saturday evening just a block away. On the 9300 block. One person was hurt but is expected to recover.
