He was listed as an alternate but came back to finish as runner up to this years mavericks competition. We are live with him this morning. And we are talking to the ceo of the Super Bowl Host Committee to wrap up the final numbers of the big event. Plus its one of the most recognized parts of any Chinese New Years celebration. We go behind the scenes to see what it takes to bring the lion dance to life. Hello, tuesday morning. Nothing like a song thats 41 years old and still bringing it. It was indeed a slow ride there on the east shore this beautiful morning. All good now, though. Feeling good this tuesday morning. Welcome to the 9. We want to know what you do thats extreme or what you would like to do. The calendar may say winter but we have more record temps in the bay area on president s day. Feels like its a saturday in june or july. We were in traffic with the line probably for like an hour and a half. Today were expected to have another warm day across the bay. Well check with steve in a few minutes to see how high temperatures could get today. A man suspected in a triple arrest from valentines day morning. Steven mitchell is involved in the high profile case of a sheriffs deputy who shot and killed 13yearold andy lopez in santa rosa. His car was discovered sunday in a parking lot and his cell phone and clothing were found near the car. Its a mystery as to why he drove there and what happened to him afterwards. Right now we dont have any information to believe that anybody else took his vehicle there. No foul play is suspected. So were going on the premise that he drove his vehicle there himself. Mitchell was hired to defend Sonoma County against a civil lawsuit filed by the family of 13yearold andy lopez, shot to death three years ago while holding a toy gun that looked real. Mitchell was involved in an appeal by the county that could delay the case for another year. The Sheriffs Department says they dont believe his professional life has anything to do with his disappearance. And democrats are watching the races tighten in South Carolina and nevada. Reporter on the campaign trail, Bernie Sanders is not just and iowa and New Hampshire phenomenon, and george w. Bush can still draw a crowd. He hasnt done this in a while. Former president george w. Bush back on the campaign trail in South Carolina, making the case for his brother. And in my experience, the strongest person usually isnt the loudest one in the room. Reporter that sounded like a clear reference to donald trump, whos been unsparing lately in his criticism of the former president. We made a tremendous mistake, went into iraq, shouldnt have happened. Everything you see now is an offshoot of that very bad decision. Reporter for conservatives, this could be the ultimate test for trump. Thats pretty extreme. If he gets away with that without some diminishment of his support, he is really teflon don. Reporter and trump threatened to take legal action to stop ted cruz from running because of his canadian birth. I am not a single issue candidate because this is not a single issue country. Hillary clinton attacking Bernie Sanders in nevada, a state most thought was a lock for her. But sanders is dead even in recent polls. Everything in my political gut tells me that we have the momentum here in this state. Reporter thats nevada. Clinton and sanders will also square off in South Carolina february 27th. Even though clinton has an advantage there, recent polls suggest the gap is narrowing. Now to the death of Supreme CourtJustice Antonin Scalia and the political battle over filling his seat on the nations highest court. A uc berkeley political professor tells us republicans may stand firm and block anyone president obama nominate. The constitution states that the President Shall nominate and appoint a judge with the advice and consent of the senate. But with 54 republicans in the senate, a gop majority, the president could find it difficult to get a nominee considered. Coming up, the big game has come and gone. How did the bay area do . Did we earn another super bowl . Were getting answers from the ceo of the per bowl committee. It is a Beautiful Day and taking a peek at oakland estuary, stocks are looking good. The dow is up almost a full percent, nasdaq up over 1. 5 . Steve has been saying it will be another nice day in the area. But things are going to change a little bit after today . Absolutely, tomorrow big time. Enjoy today. Temperatures are very warm, way above average, and we still have a slight offshore breeze. We are on our way to a lot of sunshine, few high clouds. February has been relatively dry except the 2nd and 3rd. Getting a stretch of 15, 20 days is not uncommon at all. That ends tomorrow. Yesterday and today, couple record highs. Big changes are on the way. All these will be close, san rafael, san josi. Napa probably not. Sfo looks to be the best bet. You can see the system is on its way and thats going to usher in the big change tomorrow in the form of rain. Temperatures are warming up pretty quick here, one more day of record highs. Super bowl 50 has come and gone but was it a win for the bay area overall . Joining us with the final numbers, keith bruce, ceo of the Host Committee. Keith, thanks for coming in. Thank you. I saw the nfl commissioner had taken out a full ad in the chronical and i believe the words perfect celebration were used. Have you had a conversation with Roger Goodell or anyone else about their experience here . Yes, we officially handed the ball over the houston for the next one, and we had a nice conversation. I think that spoke about how the nfl feels. They feel it was a world class event. The words best ever were used in a number of different measurements. I think most importantly, the nfl wanted to make history and that was the headline of the ad. We wanted to redefine the way the super bowl was celebrated, particularly here in the bay area. I think from the perspective of the nfl, it was a huge success, something that was befitting of the 50th super bowl for them. What does it take to get another one . Theres a waiting period, then who gets to decide . The owners ultimately decide. Based on the feedback we got, we feel good about that. Lets talk about the fact that you had a contract to do this. Your contract is coming up pretty soon. If we do another super bowl, we may have all different faces, someone new for the Host Committee, new mayors, a whole different cast if you will. One of the reasons we are winding down for the next several months and doing all the reports is for that reason. We know that were going to turn it over to someone else. And if we were to bid on the 56th, wed have to start that process in about 18 months. So the Host Committee will be wound down by june or july. Ill probably be the last guy standing in july. But well leave behind the documents and reports and information so that when the bay area decides to bid on hosting another one, all the documentation will be there. It wont be like theyre starting from scratch like we did two and a half years ago. I wasnt watching mike before, i was watching nfl network and watching those beautiful shots. It was like an advertisement for San Francisco. It really was. Awesome. And again, the bay area presented so well. Even if we had inclement weather, we knew wed have great participation. People were so excited for the nine days. Bart had record ridership the saturday before game day sunday, over 400,000 riders. The bay area embraced it and it looked great on television, all the aerials and great shots. There may have been some that felt differently. What would you do different . We always learn something whenever we put on a party. Did something stand out . I think we looked at all the things that did go well. There were a lot of things that went well in terms of game day transportation, zero security breaches. We talked about security forever and that investment paid off. I think we look at things like super bowl city, would we put it in the same place or look at a different location . The warriors will have a new stadium most likely and that could change the landscape there. We did hear, theres not enough to do in super bowl city. Did you hear that . Not so much. I think were limited by the geographic footprint. Theres only so much you can do there and we wanted it to be easy for people to enjoy the technology, have great food and wine and listen to free music. A lot of people were upset when they couldnt get into super bowl on saturday night and friday night. Those entrances were blocked off hours before the performances started. We had to close the gates about 6 00 but we said on friday night, if you want to see this, get in early. Its likely it will close because of Public Safety issues. The good of it is, it was an oversold people were so excited to be there. Unfortunately for those who came late, they had to listen kind of from outside the gate. Keith bruce, ceo of super bowl 50 Host Committee, thank you for joining us. Maybe youll be back. Thats right. Its been a fun ride. Thank you guys very much. Coming up, preparations underway for the Chinese New Year parade. Up next, the behind the scenes look at one of the most colorful parts of the event. And for many its one of the biggest nights of high school. Coming up on the 9, how two moms are making sure prom is something to remember even if you cant afford to go. I am sircanalot, here to save you from another breakfast bore. Wake up those eggs with glorious spam see what spam can do. At spam. Com welcome back. This is not a backdrop, a real room. Hear that barge . Pretty cool. Got a house there. Can we start again . Back to you. How attractive. Its one of the most colorful and dramatic parts of the Chinese New Year celebration. Thats right. The Chinese New Year parade is coming up on saturday. And we are so excited for it. The lion dances, they are a significant part of the Chinese New Year celebration and the parade because of what it represents. People may not realize it but the performance is often a family affair. Reporter they move to the rhythm of the drum. We follow the music, the drum to guide them. Reporter as part of chinese tradition, lions help welcome in the new year. The lion dance is bringing the good spirit every year so everybody will have good health, good posterity and make a lot of money. Reporter beneath the color and majesty is also family. 21 years. This is a way of life . This is life. This is my second family. This is my second home. Large family, medium family. You know, a thousand people. I do it because its really fun and i get to hang out with all these cool people and theyre basically my second family. It is a craft that takes years to learn. I learn martial arts in china and come to United States and follow my master. Reporter what he learned, he now passing down to the next generation. They come here, i teach them what is right and what is wrong. Yes, respect to elders and manners. Reporter it is a lesson both michael and catherine are teaching their daughter, spending free time here and sharing what they know with their community and their daughter nicole. My mom will be conducting everything, like tells us what to do and my dad will be like helping us and making us look better. Then i will be doing maybe a tale. Reporter they train and just like those who watch, every experience for those involved is different. Pretty important to a lot of older folks. They believe in this, you know, superstition. Reporter but it all has meaning. The lion dance, they have all this love, everything. Reporter as they welcome the new year, its a welcome into the family and wish of hope for a prosperous new year. The head means you start off good. The tail means at the end of the year or day you get good luck. Good luck to everyone. Its interesting if you see the significance to kind of every different part of them and why they look the way they do. We were told not to wear certain colors. Dont wear white. That signifies funerals. So what about plaid . Four is not a good number. Red is good. Green is good. So im good on plaid . As long as its not white. Bill murray gave me a hard time for wearing plaid one year. Now im coming at you, bill. Stuck in my head all these years. Theres so much more to see. You can head down to San Francisco and see it live or watch it right here on ktvu february 20th starting at 6 00 p. M. Coming up, he was a last minute addition to the mavericks lineup and came out with a second place finish. Reporter and we are live along San Franciscos Fishermans Wharf. Could the commercial crab fishing season start this week . The important Conference Call scheduled for later this morning, and why not everybody is happy about it. Welcome back. We asked at the top of the newscast if you were a daredevil, what would you do. What are you seeing . I want to jump off an airplane at 15,000 feet. I lost the other one. You have it here . She said she wanted to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. I think one of you guys said as a 19yearold there are things i would have done that i wouldnt do now. I think family and other responsibilities do that. Every now and then the blue angels take a reporter up and i was asked, would you want to go. I said no. Why take an unnecessary risk . Even with the blue angels, bad things could happen. I did fly with the thunderbirds, that was pretty cool. Use ktvuthe9 to reach us. Travis paine was an alternate for the mavericks competition, then the night before got the call that he was officially in. And he finished in second place. Travis is here, live on the 9. Bra, number two. And you were an alternate. Youre a heck of a surfer. Thank you. Thank you. How was it . It was fun, really fun. To go from not thinking i was going to be in the event to doing so well, it was a pretty good feeling. I know you grew up in pacifica, when was the first time you saw the break out there and the first time you got in the water and surfed it . First time i saw it, my uncle steve surfed it as we were growing up, me and my cousin and brother. We always thought it was crazy, no way in hell wed surf out there. But. But then . Well, yeah, i figured id paddle out and give it a look sitting in the channel and just watch it. I think i was 16 when i did that. Then just through the progression, moved closer and closer to where it breaks. Probably 18 when i started getting good waves out here. Youre a paramedic with the San Francisco fire department. You see death and face death every day. Is there something in you and fellow paramedics that makes you want to chase danger and find risk when it becomes and almost everyday thing for you . I dont know if my job is that glorious. You know, my dad was a firefighter and he was able to surf, had a lot of days off. So i just started to go to school for that, follow in his footsteps, and started working on the ambulance. I like the medical aspect of it, progressing thing, always new medicine and youre always learning and stuff is always changing. Youre an elite surfer. Does it get carry out there . There are definitely days out there that are scarier than others. When it gets really big, it will break on the outer part of the reef and its pretty terrifying. Ken collins said, i almost drowned out there. So take us back to the day we were watching there, sitting on the board. Were there certain waves coming in and youre like, because this is the competition, i need to charge it . That day not so much. There was a swell about a week before that that was a lot bigger. Unfortunately the contest couldnt run that day. That day for sure was huge. But the contest day was not gigantic, it was normal size, kind of windy so it made it a little bumpy. Is that in your favor because youre a local . Yeah. You know that water. Yeah, it wasnt aplus mavericks, just normal surf, so i felt really comfortable out there. Are you going to do it again . I hope so. I hope im invited back. Talk about some of the physical demands placed on your body, holding your breath, strength and agility. Theres definitely a lot. When you wipe out out there, a lot of people relate it to a car wreck, you just hold things in and youre getting kicked in the back of the head by your feet. Theres also the being held underwater. The swell before that, i wiped out pretty bad and felt like my ears were going to pop. I had to clear the ears underwater. You get pushed really deep then water comes over top of you, so its pretty tough. A lot of yoga, stretching, trying to stay loose. Do you feel like theres a generational switch now at mavericks from the jeff clarks, now kind of handing it to guys like yourself and embracing it . I guess so. Nick is probably one of the youngest guys out there and hats off to him for winning it. That final was mostly the younger generation. I know carlos was in there. Hes older but hes one of the toughest guys out there for sure. How soon do you go back to work after the contest . I go back on wednesday. What are you preparing to walk into . Im going to walk in with a bunch of ice cream. There you go. We know how that goes. Congratulations and hats off to you, look forward to seeing you out there for years to come. Thank you. There could be good news for bay area crab fishermen this morning. One call couple help could help start the season, and brian flores has more. Reporter a Conference Call scheduled for less than 30 minutes now with the Dungeness Crab Task force, a Sub Committee with the department of wildlife. We are live at Fishermans Wharf all morning long. This shows you how not busy it is here, signifying how bad the crab fishing season really is. These pods would typically be in the water by now. Really these havent been in the water since last year. Talking about that phone call scheduled for 10 00 this morning, members of task force will hear the latest test results regarding the acid negatively affecting the crab season, caused by algae blooms. If exposed it to, it could cause nausea or shortterm memory loss. They have found levels have gone down and decided to open the waters to recreational fisherman last week. We spoke with a Restaurant Owner moments ago, also owner of a wholesale Seafood Company and he says opening up the waters now would be a bad idea. I think opening the season around the first of march or last week of february is a bad idea because i dont think this market in San Francisco and the bay area will sustain the amount of crab thats going to be coming in. Whats going to happen is, its all going to be frozen for next year, which could drive the price down next year, which i would hate to see for the fleet. Reporter fishermen get top dollar when the crab is fresh. The impact here felt everywhere. The governor asked the federal government to declare that a fisheries disaster, saying this cost the state more than 48 million. A bulk of that revenue for the state revolves around the holiday season, thanksgiving and christmas. We just spoke with a fisherman a few minutes ago who told us hes crossing his fingers and wants to get back to work soon. And this is still up to the California Department of fish and wildlife to give the final say on when the crab fishing season opens. Going to the prom is one of the highlights of high school. But it can be expensive and some people may not be able to afford to go at all. But one dress Donation Program in the bay area is making girls dreams come true. Reporter at a donated store front at a strip mall in brentwood, two women are helping teen girls create memories that will last a lifetime. These dresses are like 600 to 900. Thats a paycheck for some people. Reporter dresses in all colors and sizes, new or gently used, donated by formal wear stores and individuals who want to help teens experience the rite of passage. She looks amazing, feels amazing, thats all that matters. Reporter all for girls who otherwise wouldnt be able to go to the prom or senior ball. I didnt think i could afford it. Reporter she has four siblings and her parents couldnt spend a lot of money for her to attend the senior ball. I was really excited that i was going to be able to go because i didnt think i was going to be able to. Reporter they already have a thousand dresses but says the girls should have choices. I want them the imagine the dress and when they get here, they see it. Reporter it can help girls build confidence. This one dress, its a small token but it could open up doors with a new outlook on life. Reporter and they provide accessories as well. The happiness, their face lights up, theyll have that memory. Its something you remember forever. Its like the last moment before becoming an adult. East bay dress day will open this saturday and girls from anywhere in the bay area are welcome to come. More information at ktvu. Com, and thats a great option if you cant spend hundreds of dollars it takes to go to prom. Now we are following a case back in court this morning. Thats right, 10 30 in federal court, a lot of people knew chamberlain worked on the campaign and hes very well known in political circles here. He again will be appearing at 10 30 this morning, accused of possessing biological and chemical toxins and a homemade bomb in his San Francisco apartment in 2014. Chamberlain was the subject of a nationwide fbi search beginning in may of 2014 after evidence of explosives were found in his San Francisco apartment and after he allegedly posted a suicide note on facebook. There will be some sort of announcement and they have not said what that is but some say they believe it could have to do with police corruption. So were going to be live at noon and well let you know what is announced. Thats about it. By the way, want window to tell you mike, i sat down with travis yesterday. That guy is so funny. He is like the mellowest surfer you have ever met. Laid back. I said, youre really mellow. You know what he said . He smiled and said, yeah, this is my excited face. Very laid back kind of guy. And a lot of ladies have been asking me if hes taken. Yes, he is, so lets get that out there for the sake of his girlfriend, who was very lovely. Just a great guy and very sincere. To think that he was just surfing these massive waves then to be here, it was a pleasure and honor to meet him. Glad hes also a part of San Francisco fire department. Thanks for that. Time now 9 47. An armed robber in San Francisco left behind a surprising piece of evidence that could lead to his arrest, a selfie taken with his own cell phone. Deputies say 52yearold carlos came home to find a man pointing a gun at him and demanding he get on ground. He ran to his bedroom and called 911, and the robber ran away. But not before leaving behind his cell phone, which was charging in the kitchen. A deputy touched the screen and there was the selfie of the robber. Even though i got out, for those few seconds my life flashed before my eyes. And the robber also took hot dogs from the refrigerator to feed the pit bull to keep it from attacking. This is like a bad story. The Better Health pharmacy is providing Prescription Medication at no charge. So how does it work . Reporter the grand opening is about to begin in just a few minutes. They did open in august with a soft opening but didnt publicize it yet because they rely on volunteers and wanted everything to be in place. Since august, the Better Health pharmacy has filled 700 prescriptions to those in need. They are act to start here. And all the prescription drugs they have been giving out, theyre free to people who cant afford them. Its the first drug donation pharmacy in Northern California and its located on east santa clara street near 15th. We got a sneak peek inside. The pharmacy demands on donations from licensed facilities around the state, so no copay or insurance is needed. You just need a valid prescription to have it filled. The medication that we have been dispensing are mainly like asthma medications or hypertension and diabetes. Some of these medications, even though patients have insurance, some of them require copay and they are unable to pay for them and many go without. Reporter there is a catch. The farm wont always carry the prescription that you need. A list of drugs is posted on their website. It can change depending on a whats donated. The pharmacy will also not dispense controlled drugs like pain medication but this pharmacy is helping a lot of people, seniors, anybody in the low income community. And it is open monday through wednesday from 4 00 to 8 00 p. M. , then on saturdays from 9 00 a. M. To 1 00 p. M. So a really beneficial service for those in Santa Clara County who are really in need, because we still have such a disparity here. Thank you.
