bully you don't stoop to they are level. no, our moto is when they go low, we go high. and scolded by sarah silverman. the comedian gets serious. >> can i just say to the bernie or bust people, you're being ridiculous. good morning from the cbs newsroom here in new york, here in new york, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. at the democratic national convention history will be made when hillary clinton is formally named the presidential nominee. last night it was an effort to turn discord into unity in the e-mail hacking scandal, outgoing chair, debbie wasserman schultz did not make an appearance to gavel the convention open. the last speaker was bernie sanders who called on his reluctant supporters to put aside their animosity and stand behind his former rival. >> hillary clinton will make an outstanding president and i am proud to stand with her tonight. thank you all very much. >> a new cnn/orc poll shows donald trump leads clinton by three percentage point. it's trump's best showing against clinton since 2016. jamie yuccas is in philadelphia. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. yesterday it was all about how the democratic party was in turmoil. but today with michelle obama taking the stage, many say how the party was able to unite and going after donald trump without ever mentioning his name. bernie sanders capped a contentious first day at the dnc urging his backerses to beat donald trump in november. >> hillary clinton must become the next president of the united states. >> reporter: the vermont porterers booed the day's events. >> i'm going to be respectful of you and i want you to be resp t respectful of me. >> reporter: elizabeth war reason did her best. but it was first lady michelle obama who managed to embrace the divide. >> only one person who is truly capable to be president of the united states and that is our friend hillary clinton. >> reporter: some bernie sanders say no matter what, they will not vote for hillary clinton, even if that means donald trump becoming president. many protesting outside the convention are still angry over the release of hacked e-mails, suggesting dnc staffers favored clinton over sanders in the democratic primary. >> all we can do is show our support and keep fighting for sanders at the end. >> reporter: sanders had a message for those posters. >> our revolution continues. >> reporter: former president bill clinton will address the convention a day focused on children and families. to make sure the campaign continues to unite, the clinton campaign has added even more sanders supporters. as well we will hear from mothers who lost to gun violence including trayvon martin's mother and brown's mother. it was a common bunch line for democrats all night long. and true to form, trump had plenty to say in 140 character or less among his tweets last night. bernie sanders totally sold out to crooked hillary clinton. all of that work, energy and money and nothing to show for it, waste of time. elizabeth warren often referred to as pocahontas just misrepresented me and spoke glowing about rookcrooked hilla. >> she railed against trump rhetoric. >> i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. and i watched my daughters two beautiful intelligent black young women playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. and because of hillary clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the united states. so, don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because this right now is the greatest country on earth. >> mrs. obama speech got some pretty high praise the president tweeting immediately after. incredible speech by an incredible woman. couldn't be more proud and our country has been blessed to have her as flotus, i love you, might be shell. comedian sarah silverman let the die-hard sanders supporters have it. >> hillary!
