off a flight. and destructive storms hit several states leaving debris in the heartland with millions still under sthreat of severe weather today. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, a temporary about-face by president trump on a key campaign promise. the president agreed not to pull out of the north american free trade agreement at this time. he calls on the leaders of america's nafta partners canada and mexico. earlier administration officials said the president was considering an executive order to withdraw from the agreement. mr. trump railed against nafta during the campaign and bashed it again last week. >> the fact is nafta, whether it's mexico or canada, is a disaster for our country. it's a disaster. it's a trading disaster. >> earlier this week the president imposed new tariffs on lumber imported from canada. and this morning there are mixed reviews for president trump's tax overhaul proposal. some republicans are worried about the impact on the national debt. democrats say the plan is a giveaway to the wealthy. meanwhile the republicans say they made progress in a compromised plan to overhaul obamacare. a cbs news pohl finds most americans thinks the president should move onto other issues and others are worried about an increase over taxes. brook silva-braga has more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. it would give ordinary taxpayer as more standard deduction, but beyond that critics and supports face the same challenge. it's hard to say with much certainty what the overhaul of the taxes would do. president trump touted his newly unveiled tax reform blueprint wednesday even as his administration defended the lack of details. >> we have outlines. we have a broad brush view of what they're going be. >> the plan, which was boiled down to a single page, would slash the corporate tax rate from 35% to 15%, cut rates for individuals, and simplify the tax code by removing the number of tax braktds from seven to three. analysts say the plan could add billions to the deficit. others argue it will add growth to the gap. >> what this is about is creating jobs and economic growth. >> officials in the freedom house caucus approved the plan for improvements on obamacare. with a deadline to avert a government shutdown just one day away, negotiations continue over key sticking points in the funding bill. yesterday the president made another major concession in those negotiations agreeing to keep paying obamacare subsidies at least for now. in case the bill doesn't pass, congress is creating a temporary measure to keep it up and running for another week. government funding runs through midnight tomorrow. if the government shutdown does happen on saturday, it will fall on the president's 100th day in office, anne-marie. >> thank you so much, brook. well, attorney general jeff sessions said the administration will push the legal fight to strip funds from so-called sajsary cities. the president called the ruling ridiculous. in a statement late last night sessions said the president was within his power to issue the executive order. and some like utah senator orrin hatch are hailing the president's order to review the designations of dozens of national monuments. the review is to open a push for more federal land for drilling another development. mr. trump's executive order covers millions of acres. the united states and south korea agreed on swift punitive measures against north korea in the event of more provocation from the north korean regime. the standoff over the north nuclear weapons has escalated. the trump administration laid out its plans to senators during a white house briefing yesterday. the administration said it will apply economic and diplomatic pressure on the north but also laid out military options. >> it was sobering how much thought and planning is going into preparing military options if called for and a diplomatic strategy with strikes made clear. >> yesterday south korea started installing a u.s. missile defense system and the u.s. has sent a aircraft carrier and submarine to the region. ahead on "cbs this morning" we'll talk with john mccain who attended yesterday's white house briefing. online commerce. trading and shares of takata were suspended after the japanese company was considered filing bankruptcy. it prompted the car industry's biggest recall ever. a chinese car company
