>> reporter: who knows. if there is a team, the team hasn't made any decisions, david, in the last month or so or since november 25th when the scandal broke to help him out at all. he went from being one of the best known people on the planet earth, with an unassailable bulletproof reputation worth that money to essentially being a punch line. he was on the front page of the "new york post" 21 days in a row and not because he could sink a 12-foot putt under pressure but he was in a scandal of his own creation. he has to find a way out that have sometime in 2010 if he's to resume the life employees in a remote outpost in southeastern afghanistan a few days ago. there are reports the suicide bomber had been invited onto the base and had not been searched. we get more now from nbc's jim maceda in kabul. >> reporter: confirmation of that associated press report that broke yesterday citing two unnamed u.s. officials, that the afghan man wearing an afghan army uniform pep traited and blew himself up in that base in southeastern afghanistan was, in fact, someone that the cia was trying to court or turn to become an informant. of course what happened after that, which is now raising eyebrows in the intelligence community and the military community as well, suggesting the reach and the sophistication of the taliban being able now perhaps to use double agents to penetrate u.s. military bases. one of the officials quoted in that ap story says that it's not unusual to relax standard operating procedures in terms of security when it involves an individual who is being courted or who is trying to be won over by the cia. in this particular case, of course, we understand that this individual was not searched as a highly secure and guarded front gate. of course trust and attempted attack on that airliner in detroit. six were released last week, at least 80 still remain. about half of the presideison's entire population. but two of the 14 released during the bush administration are now in the top ranks of al qaeda in yemen. stopping the release of detainees is only one of the many demands from several democrats and most republican critics in the wake of last week's attempted terror attack. bob franken joins us now and "newsweek's" jonathon alter and an nbc news analyst is with us. bob, let's start with you. i suppose arguing about guantanamo bay detainees is one thing but the partisan attacks on how long the president waited and whether he recognizes that we're in a war, it seems like the country was already upset that this had happened, that the republicans essentially make themselves the story at a time they really don't do themselves any favors. >> well, they don't. however, events can sometimes vindicate what had previously been viewed as just a blatant politics. the surprise that occurred on christmas day with the almost catastrophic disaster with the underwear bomber, as they're now calling him, has really allowed the republicans to do a bit of, see, i told you so. we have to remember that if barack obama started with any vulnerability, it was the accusation from even members of his own party that he might be too inexperienced to deal with the complexities of something like terrorism. this is an issue where the republicans will now be able to gloat and get away with it. >> to a certain extent, but, jonathon alter, dick cheney and the way he tried to deal with this, i mean, it makes you wonder whether dick cheney is having severe medical or psychological problems given that his statement seems so irrational, was so politically tone deaf and didn't make -- and so easily impeached that the sort of sophisticated intellectual argument was absent from everything dick cheney said this week. >> i think that's right, david. this is a bogus, i told you so, on a couple of different levels. first of all, the masterminds of this particular plot were -- at least one of them, maybe two -- were released by the bush administration. and that -- the reason that i emphasize the bush administration is former people to point fingers at the obama administration on this particular case is kind of, as you point out, sort of ridiculous. you're right that it does discredit other efforts to point legitimate criticisms, of perhaps the slowness with which obama responded. other possible new holes in the system, but for the vice president to consistently over the past year attack this president as weak is essentially unprecedented in modern american politics. i personally think it's unpatriotic because what it does is it provides some comfort for our enemies and maybe even encourages them if they think that the new president is weak and is not going to respond to terrorism. on top of that, he simply lied when he said that the president no longer calls it a war. he has used that word war many times, said on many occasions that the nation is at war, so when the former vice president says that, he's not telling the truth. >> and, bob franken, does it help the democrats politically when dick cheney makes statements that are, again, so sort of out there as opposed to having to deal with the more intellectual arguments that have been made by other republicans? >> well, i think what it might do is to regenerate enthusiasm among some democrats. dick cheney is obviously preaching to his choir, which is the republican base. the democrats, for a variety of reasons have been losing enthusiasm about the obama presidency. so dick cheney really becomes a convenient bad guy who might -- his real purpose might be to regenerate the democratic base because the democrats can now say if you want more dick cheney? >> good point. >> bob franken and jonathon alter, thank you both. happy new year. thanks for coming >> it's pretty easy to radicalize young people, no matter where they are. they're young, impressionable, naive, full of energy and like easy solutions to complex problems. london is a particular problem, though, because it has a lot of people who are muslims from back in the empire days, from west africa to pakistan. in addition to that, it's a big international city, much more than even new york city. although london is a problem and the universities there are a problem, they're not nearly as difficult as those places on the continent, places like paris, for example. and in the netherlands. the difference is that in the uk, you have a very large number of people, muslims included, who are integrated into society that's not necessarily true on the continent where it is a big breeding ground for revolutionaries. >> in other words just the mere opportunity, because of the diversity of the backgrounds of the number of muslims who are in london, social networks available to them, whether it's universities or otherwise, is essentially part of what's going on? >> yeah, the law of large numbers says with a large number of people there, you're going to wind up -- some people are going to get radicalized and it is something that the government has to keep an eye on. >> retired army colonel jack jacobs, as always, thank you. happy new year. another look at how americans ushered in 2010. arctic air did not stop partygoers in chicago with windchills there. it felt like it was 10 below at times last night. the city put on not one but two fire works displays this year. as we begin the new year, you may be thinking about your next vacation and may also be looking for some great deals. from travel magazine, shawn o'neill joins us. what's at the top of your list?
