Good evening from new york. Im chris hayes. Right now, right this moment, there are americans who are alive and who are healthy who will be dead by the fall. And there are americans who already died who did not have, all because of the failures of our government and more specifically the president of the United States. There is no other conclusion you can reach at this point. We have lost every last charitable explanation for failures, that the disease itself is challenging, which it is, that its hard to fight, which it is, that its torn through all different kinds of cultures with all different kinds of cultures and governments and institutions. There is nothing left to say but that donald trump has gotten americans killed and will get even more americans killed in unfathomable numbers. When the pandemic started, i warned on this show, as did everyone we talked to, that the president could not just wish the virus away as much as he wanted to or tried to. Now, the virus that were talking about having to do, you know, a lot of people think that goes away in april with the heat. Because of all weve done, the risk to the American People remains very low. When you have 15 people and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero. Its going to disappear. One day it is like a miracle. It will disappear. We have to be calm. It will go away. That was inexcusable, egregious, impossibly stupid and it led to the horrible response we had to this virus. But to do it again almost word for word, action for action, 130,000 deaths later, well, thats horrific. I think at some point thats going to sort of just disappear, i hope. You still believe so . I do. I do. Sure, at some point. And i think we will have a vaccine at some point, too. That was today. That was july 1st, 2020. When i saw it reported, i was absolutely positive it was an old clip. As i said before, the president does not learn, and his incompetence and his negligence is getting americans killed, which is why every day that goes by without his resignation americans health, safety and lives are increasingly threatened. But it is not just him, Vice President mike pence, the head of the Coronavirus Task force, has been basically doing the same thing. Two weeks ago, as the virus was spreading across the country, raging through the sun belt, he was bragging about how there was no second wave, which to be fair, technically there still isnt because we never got out of the first wave, and bragging about how daily new cases had stabilized at 20,000. This was the number. Hey, look, 20,000, everybody. And that the media was to blame for fear mongering and trying to scare the American People. And so we are now at the worst Case Scenario. The president got tired of lockdowns and he pressured and bullied governors to reopen prematurely against his own cdc guidelines because he wanted people to get out there like warriors to get the economy restarted so that he could be reelected. But just like we warned night after night, if you do not take the virus seriously, then you run the risk of neither defeating the pandemic, nor getting the economy back. And that is precisely what is happening right now. The virus is spreading all over the country, particularly moving into the heart of politically conservative regions with states the president won in 2016 accounting for 75 of the new cases. Arizona right now looks like it has a chance of rivaling new york. The numbers there are shocking. They reported a record nearly 5,000 new cases in the last 24 hours with over 24 of the tests coming back positive. They also saw a record 88 new deaths, and that is deeply disturbing and frightening, especially since we have learned some very costly lessons about protecting vulnerable populations at this point in the pandemic, and longterm care facilities should have better policie policies. And the median age is, in fact, younger, and there has been a question about whether we could see this spike in cases and not see fatalities go up. And, yet, everyone i have talked to on this program, every Public Health expert and epidemiologist and doctor said thats not going to happen and now we are seeing it not happen. But its not just arizona. Texas hit over 8,000 today setting another record, more than double the numbers they were seeing two weeks ago. Hospitalizations jumped to nearly 7,000. Florida added 6,500 cases while ron desantis said the state would not be going back on reopening. Cases are increasing in 38 states, plus puerto rico. There are literally only three states where cases are decreasing. And guess what is happening . People are pulling back. California is closing bars and stopping Indoor Dining in 19 counties. Texas and florida already reclosed bars. New york postponed the return of Indoor Dining indefinitely today, and who could blame them . Although, thats terrible for all the people that have jobs in those places. And then Economic Activity pulls back. The economy started, quote, moving backwards as rising infection fears spooked customers. Yeah, no kidding. New job posting fell in june. Credit and debit card spending declined. We saw foot traffic to retailers and other businesses decline in large cities in Southern States where the infections have spiked. We are in the midst of an ongoing, deepening impending disaster. We elected donald trump to pilot the american plane and he has flown us straight into a mountain. In an incredibly damning new piece, an after crash review of the coronavirus response, making the case there are so many different places where we failed. And james falos joins me now. I want to start, james, with the conceit of the piece, which is comparing what has happened in this country and what is happening every day to a plane crash and to a disaster on that magnitude with so many points of failure, which is the structure for the piece. Why use that metaphor, that comparison . The reason i make that comparison is that there were obvious differences between dealing with the pandemic and managing an air travel system. There is some surprising similarities, starting with the fact that air travel is inherently extremely dangerous. We dont recognize that now. We dont Pay Attention to it because its become so safe over the last year when travel was normal about two million americans got on airplanes every day and they all got off safely. Its become a safe system because it has taken a systemic approach from learning from its failures, trying to think carefully about the accident train and trying to break it at each point along the way. So this careful learning process is epitomized by the ntsb report, whenever there is a disaster. So i was trying to apply that ntsb mentality to what the u. S. History of the last few months. And one of the things you isolate here is that there were plans in place that people you know, we know this. But you quote, i mean quote after quote of these plans about precisely what would happen, about the checklist that you should have. I mean, it was like there is a flight plan and a flight checklist and it was handed over and it was just completely and utterly discarded and continues to be to this day. I think the fact that surprised me that maybe most important in this polarized political era is much en sync is george w. Bush administration and the Barack Administration were in thinking about exactly how to detect, prepare for and contain a pandemic if it occurred and there was a very eloquent and detailed play list or play book set out by the bush team in 2005. I have a link to it online in my piece, very similar to the one from the Obama Administration. First they said new pandemics are inevitable because we know that with disruption of animal habitats, there is going to be some new virus that will occur. They need to be contained where they start because if they dont, the ripple effects on the economy, on civil society, on everything could be just profound. And, so, they had they said, how do you judge air travel coming into the country. How would you get in touch with state departments of health . And it just makes you cry to read these similar documents from 2005 with the Bush Administration and from late in the Obama Administration which are so similar to each other, so similar to our current reality and so totally ignored by the current administration. There are even warnings about lifting restrictions too early and basically having a kind of worst Case Scenario in which neither the economy comes back and the virus comes back. I mean, this is people writing 15 years ago peering into the future and saying, dont do this thing that we have now made policy in states across the country. Yes, because what is holding back the economy now is not the restrictions that governors and mayors have put on and the federal government. It is the fear of the virus and people dont want to get sick. That, again, was entirely foretold. In the aviation parallel, i talked about how in the movie su sully, they were going through the checklist as their plane lost its engines and was being glided into the hudson river. And the idea was it this kind of foreseeing emergencies could make you safe and there was just complete foreknowledge of everything were experiencing now by the george w. Bush team and the barack obama team. It was not a partisan issue. It was not their personalities. It was science which was then just tossed out. There is, of course, the single point of failure, which is the pilot in this case. There is nothing you can do systematically. If you put me behind to pilot an airplane right now, things would do poorly and there is no system you could design to make it work. But on the political aftere aftereffects, i thought this reporting of trump reporters that abandoned him was interesting. There is a segment in the population that notices coronavirus also changed the mind of ariel oakley, 29. With coronavirus even just watching the press conferences, having him come out and say its all fake. I have family that passed away from it. They cannot pretend its not there. Yes. And, you know, when unemployment was when there were layoffs because of trade sanctions or farmers were losing markets because of the trade embargoes that the Trump Administration was applying, people could explain some of those things even though the real world effects were obvious to them. Something about having family members and neighbors actually die and the way that your life changes because the pandemic goes from being something thats a political talking point to a reality of life across the country, that may be the circumstance which changes politics from being who are you most resentful about, which has been the dynamic for the past decade, to who is going to save your life and improve the economy, save your life and do what the nation needs done. James, the piece is fantastic. I have been thinking about and reading about this for months, and it still somehow felt new and fresh to me. Thank you so much. Thank you, chris. Joining me now for more on the response to the growing covid outbreaks, former acting director of the cdc under president obama. I want to start with something that the Principal Deputy at the cdc said, and i think its interesting that with the president losing basically getting bored of the virus that we have more communication with those folks. She said the u. S. Has way too much virus to control pandemic as cases surge across the country. When you look at the numbers and the trajectory in these states, what should we be doing . What should they be doing . What should the cdc be doing . Can the fire be put out at this point . Yeah. James has really nailed it. There has been planning going on for decades by Public Health about how to respond to a pandemic. And Public Health knows how to do this. Hes one of the most Brilliant Health leaders i have ever met. And if we put Public Health back in the drivers seat and let Public Health lead, we can get this under control. You know, europe has gotten this under control, and we can do the same. Its going to take rolling back some of the openings that were put in place. But like, okay, first of all, i mean, like, if you were parachuted in to arizona right now and you were given the reins and said whatever you too come up with, were going to do here in arizona, what would you do . What could you do . Like right now. Yeah. If you look at new york and new jersey that were out of control several months ago, the states went into the kind of lockdown that we have been talking about that other places have been in that were slowly emerging from in this region. So in an area where the cases are rising at such a dramatic rate, where your Health Care System is on the verge of getting overwhelming, where you cant take care of patients who have covid, let alone those that dont have covid. Then you have to put on those controls. But you really want to get data. You want data so you are able to fine tune this better than we were the first time, so that areas where the numbers are going down or where theyre steady dont have to increase the kinds of control measures that we all were under several months ago. But in cities that are seeing these kinds of rises in rates, yeah, you have to do that because you cant switch to a Public Health model of identifying cases and case tracking and then assuring people have isolation quarantine when you are seeing 4,000, 5,000 cases a day. It is absolutely impossible. If you drive the numbers down to a hundred, then thats manageable. I mean, thats the problem, right . Is that, you know, i can put out a fire in a waste paper basket with a fire extinguisher by myself. I cant walk into a burning high rise with a fire extinguisher and put it out. Right now it seems there is a mismatch in these states, particularly arizona which is the most concerning, between the available tools of Public Health short of mass lockdown and the scale of the problem unless were missing something or unless there is some natural ark to it that its going to follow. No. If you look at countries that have been successful, there was a major lockdown at the beginning to drive the number of cases that were occurring each day down to a number that could be managed by regular Public Health approaches. You know, if you look at hawaii for instance, where the numbers are really low, theyre able to keep this under control by case investigation, by contact tracing, by isolation and quarantine. Right. But, chris, i think there is an aspect of this thats even worse than we have been talking about. In these states where the numbers are really high, there are communities where its even worse, where the individuals dont have the choice about staying home, where people have to go to work to put food on the table to avoid eviction, you know, and it is those to senses workers who i think are suffering but we dont even have the data or information to show us exactly where thats happen so action can be taken. Final question maybe on a slightly more optimistic note. There is news today from pfizer and biotech about a Covid Vaccine that showed some positive results. I think there is nine different vaccines being pursued across the world. How hopeful are you at this collective underprize that is being taken right now . I dont want to bring you down. Okay. Im excited there is a lot of work going on here. This was 45 people in the study. Its early. I think the results are more about stock price than they are about science. We have to come together as a nation and recognize that, you know, when youre approaching a pandemic, it is not like an election where the approach that gets the most votes wins. This is something where we have to come together as a nation and all be on the same page, where politicians have to support Public Health in approaching this with Public Health science so we can truly get it under control, and i think we can do that. Dr. Richard besser, thank you for that unvarnished look at all this. Still to come, new reporting about russia paying taliban fighters to kill american soldiers. A pretty good rule of thumb in the trump era is if the president calls something a hoax, its true. He called the u. S. Intelligence about russian criminal sabotage a hoax. He called intel reports of russia attempting to sabotage the upcoming election a hoax. He even cast criticism of his response to the coronavirus a democratic hoax. Of course the president is calling this incredibly damning reporting about russia paying a bounty for the killing of u. S. Troops in afghanistan and the u. S. Knowing about it a hoax as well as his administration is Briefing Congress about the details. Today the National Security adviser discussed how he shared this intel with our allies because it was so serious. He also said that the pentagon took protective measures to look after our troops in afghanistan. Meanwhile, as this was happening, donald trump kept making nice with vladimir putin, speaking with him at least five times. The white house tries to play this down saying, it wasnt that serious. Nobody read it to the president so how could he have known . But every day there is a new report that makes the story more credible. Large financial transferring between russia and the taliban. To explain why thats so important, i want to turn to the New York Times correspondent who coauthored that piece. If you could tell me what your reporting found or what the intelligence said about these wires between the gru and the taliban. So this was, i think, the cherry on top in terms of the evidence of malfeasance by russia here. It was a financial transaction by a bank account or that intelligence believes was controlled by the gru, russias military wing, and an account controlled by a facilitator for the taliban. The Intelligence Briefings went so far as to name the afghan middlemen that were involved in those transfers. Today my afghan colleagues took a lot of time looking at one of those people who was a petty drug smauggler back in the day. He became a contractor, taking money from the americanled coalition before suddenly starting to make frequent trips to russia, and that coincided with what neighbors described as a change in his lifestyle. He suddenly had nicer cars. He built a villa for his family and he began having body guards. So we think that i mean, whats interesting about that part of the story to me is that the idea like, the taliban has their own strategic comparatives they want and they have been fighting war for years and years. It is not that they necessarily need a russian bounty. Sure. But in this case, there is a sort of adjacent group of people more mercenary in their interest that could be sort of more easily turned in this fashion by a monetary incentive. Well, i think that this is a case of common Common Ground in terms of a common enemy. So russia was providing money to the taliban to carry out something that the taliban was already doing, which was trying to target american troops. Yeah. And of course there is a kind of grim historical symmetry here because the u. S. And cia funded the antesee dants to the taliban precisely when they viewed the russian mess there as a strategic weakness. There is a logic to why russia would do it. But there is a question of why, right . What the Strategic Vision is here, why they have invested themselves increasingly heavily in the taliban in afghanistan. Well, i think what is surprising in all of this is that russia is doing this at a time when you have in the white house a leader that, by all accounts, has been incredibly warm towards the russian state and the russian president in particular. The gru unit, this is the military Intelligence Unit that russia carries that russia used to carry this out is apparently the same unit that is responsible for the poisoning of the man in london in a couple of years ago with the powerful nerve agent. If you will recall, when that event occurred, it was really a scandal in europe and various European Countries ended up expelling dozens of Russian Diplomats in retaliation for that. The reaction across the pond in america was much more muted. You had a very similar set of events where President Trump was initially very doubtful of the intelligence indicating a russian link to this and did not react until congress essentially forced him to in terms of taking steps to punish russia for what they had done. Yeah. It was a chemical weapons attempted assassination on another countrys soil clearly linked back to the russians, extremely, extremely huge deal. The sort of one very, sort of, solemn question that hangs all over this, of course, is there is an attack that killed three u. S. Marines. The father of one of those marines who was killed wants answers. He has spoken up about his son, Corporal Robert hendricks. What do we know about whatever degree of intelligence there is linking to that specific attack . This is the interesting thing where intelligence officials that we have spoken to disagree in terms of whether that that particular attack and the death of the souldiers was, in fact, linked to this bounty. The officials i have spoken to said this is an event and the tragedy that is under investigation that could be linked to this, but they havent fully squared that circle. What they are clear on is that russia, through its military intelligence wing, has been paying these bounties to the taliban with the hopes that they will use the bounty to carry out these attacks. Whether or not they have succeeded in killing americans with this money is unclear at this point. Thank you so much for being with me tonight. Great reporting, as always. Thank you. Next, senator gillibrand is demanding hearings into those reports. Who she thinks should testify after this. Who she thinks should testify after this people used to care. Heck, theyd come all the way out here just for a blurry photo of me. Oh, thats a good one. Wait, whats that . Thats just the lowbattery warning. Oh, alright. Now its all, check out my rv, and, lets go fourwheeling. Maybe theres a little part of me that wanted to be seen. Well, progressive helps people save when they bundle their home with their outdoor vehicles. So theyve got other things to do now, bigfoot. Wait, whatd you just call me . Bigfoot . My name is daryl. Lawmakers continue to press for answers on the intelligence behind the report that russia paid bounties for killing american troops. They want to know who knew what and when. Pentagon officials were on the hill today briefing some senators including members of the Armed Services committee. And one of those members, senate from new york, joins me now. Senator, thank you for joining us. I know obviously there is often classified information in these context, but if you can tell us what you learned today. Well, i certainly didnt learn anything that was useful. The briefing that we had was classified, but it was entirely inadequate. We didnt even get the information that you would normally see in the New York Times. Im deeply concerned that this white house has failed to act knowing that russia paid a bounty for the killing of american troops in afghanistan. The fact that we have the kind of evidence that other New York Times, Washington Post have reported on about wire transfers of money as well as cash being found in safe houses in afghanistan show a lot of evidence that this actually happened and the fact that President Trump refused to stand up to president putin is an outrage. What do you think of his reaction thus far . It is striking to me that he hasnt even reacted still. It is about whether he thought it was true or whether he read his brief as opposed to grappling with the substance of the allegation here, which is quite serious and will represent a serious escalation by russia. Yeah. President trump has called this a hoax. He has called covid a hoax. The only hoax we have is a president that thinks hes a genius. The truth is that President Trump has been unwilling to hold putin accountable during his entire presidency. He didnt hold him responsible at helsinki. This is such a breach of the commander in chiefs responsibility. He has failed as commander in chief. He is supposed to look out for our Service Members and guarantee he is doing everything in our power to make sure our missions are as safe as they could be. To not react to this information and to have his white house, you know, not react and not do anything with regard to russia is simply a dereliction of duty. The president today threatened to veto the ndaa, the National Defense authorization act. Its passed every year. It is one of the remaining bipartisan bills in congress. Although, there is lots to critique within it because it is an enormous bill. But because of the amendment inside to rename bases that are named after treasonous confederate soldiers, what would that do on the hill if the president vetoed the ndaa . Well, we would override his veto, so his veto ultimately would be irrelevant. Do you any you would have the votes . I do, yeah. The ndaa typically passes with 90 votes. It is not a controversial bill by the time it gets to the floor generally. And we would override his veto. Again, to say hes going to veto a bill that is as complex and as important as the Defense Authorization bill over the renaming of monuments and bases is outrageous. The fact that he continues to spew hatred and divide this country on racist lines is just continuation of a president who doesnt understand the American People, is out of touch with the American People and cant understand what this moment is right now that were in, that we need a reckoning with generations of racism and systemic and cultural racism within our country. He hasnt been willing to address it. And in fact all hes done is stoked fli ed flames. I think this president shows again and again hes so out of touch with where the American People are right now. There is another very pressing legislative matter ahead of us. And i have talked to members of your Senate Caucus about this, and im concerned there is not enough urgency. That is the fact that the economy, after some bouncing back initially in the last four weeks as low hanging fruit was plucked and Different Things opened up that could, is going to stall out and were going to see states that lock down again and everyone who is a bartender in new york is out of luck as of today. Although, that probably makes sense for Public Health reasons. Things are going to get very bad very soon unless the United StatesSenate Passes rescue legislation that pairs with the houses. Is that going to happen . No. Because Mitch Mcconnell refuses to do his job and allow a vote on the next covid package. My state of new york is suffering. We have budget deficits and gaps in our budgets that we cant fill. So we need state and local money being infused into these states. The house bill had a trillion dollars alone for state and local. It has resources for our hospitals, for our first responders, for vaccinations, for testing, for contact testing and for families that are still unemployed. Most of the aid that we put into place is going to run out very soon. Much of it by the end of july. Soon. Very soon. And for Mitch Mcconnell to be unwilling to let us even vote or even debate a measure about the next covid package shows how irresponsible he is and again how out of touch he is with the American People. He seems to have no understanding of how many people are suffering, dont have enough food to put on their table, dont have the resources to provide for their families and their children and states that are going bankrupt. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of the state of new york, thank you for making time tonight. Thank you. The debate to reopen is usually centered on bars, restaurants and gyms. But what about schools . Why the future of the Education System is one of the most pressing questions about the phase of pap dndemic life ahead. N. Last night we held a special town hall on cities policing the movement for black lives. One of our giuests was Michael Williams who began rattling off statistics about Police Shootings in america i had not heard before. Police answered over 10 million calls last year. Out of those 10 million calls the fbi had you had a thousand and some individuals that were shot. Out of that thousand individuals you had 400 that were armed or unarmed. I believe you had 19 kau cautca shot and killed by the police last year. You only had 9 africanamericans that were killed by the police last year. Those numbers struck me as low, but this data can be hard to find. So we tried to get Michael Williams to help us out. We could not find them, which might not be surprising since the fbi database on use of force launched last year has not yet publy released any information and crucially as the fbi themselves note they do not have the Legal Authority to make Law Enforcement agencies report this information. So it is voluntarily given over by the Police Departments themselves. Various media organizations because the reporting is so bad on this have had to build their own systems from scratch in light of the lacking public data. Now, one of the best of those databases from the Washington Post found that police shot and killed 14 unarmed black people and 25 unarmed white people. But that is e strirestricted be it doesnt count a lot of deaths. Deaths in custody or deaths like that of george floyd who was pinned to the ground, a Police Officer kneeling on his neck or Elijah Mcclain or eric garner, the new yorker also put in a choke hold by police and said, i cant breathe as he died. None of them were shot. All of them died after being violently detained by the police. About a thousand people a year being shot and killed by the police. For example, a disproportionate number being black and hispanic. The head of the Memphis Police union, Michael Williams, is not the only person to use a statistic on this show that did not have the proper context. I did this same thing earlier this week. On monday i said that in oklahoma authorities tested 352 people for coronavirus over the weekend and found every test positive. They then tested another 178 people and found them all positive as well. I was so incredulous over those numbers, i even checked the website to confirm those numbers before we went on air. Indeed, that is what is on the official website. We werent wrong. Thats what they report. The problem is there is a lag in the way that oklahoma reports its data. With fewer but almost entirely positive tests being reported on the weekends and then larger numbers including negative tests reported later in the week. Those mondays i said on monday did not provide a clear or complete picture because they were not the final numbers for oklahomas weekend testing. If a statistic sounds too wild to be true, it probably is. Im going to remind myself of that in the future. Future we come together after cries he is this one we are told to stay apart. All of these states are trying to figure out how effective they can be having their vote by mail. The moment to understand who we are and who we say we are is right here at our feet. We have been debating reopening for months in this country. Those debates tend to revolve around things like hairstylists and golf courses and barbers, but there is one place more important to own. Schools. This week the American Academy of pediatrics put out a statement strongly advising children get back into the classroom. It provides social and emotional skills and helps identify sexual or physical abuse. Also, parents cant be expected to work effectively or sometimes at all if they cant send their kids to school. But this plan is distributed over 13,000 School Districts each trying to balance with little significance on centrality. I have the dean of the university of southern california, former Public School teacher. Pedro, lets start with someone who spent his life in education. What the conversations are now in the education policy world. Is there a consensus on the centrality of making this happen . Great to see you, chris and thanks for having me on. Very little clear guidance to the School Districts about how to do this. I would say most superintendents and staff are preoccupied with logistics, how do we keep schools clean and how do we ensure people who are older and immune compromised. It would help if there are guidelines about how to do this. In the absence of this we are looking to states to provide direction, but that hasnt come either. Its a void of leadership here. The reporting that i have seen, and Dana Goldstein has done great reporting of this for us as well. Its crazy. It is such a Monumental Task and its basically superintendents who have such a problem to solve. They are not Public Health experts. They have employees in the building they have to be careful of. Some who might be immunocompromised. They have the teachers and parents. I feel like they cant possibly pull off the balance of interest here. Yeah. This is we know the economy cant really reopen if schools arent open because many families, many parents cant go to work if children are unsupervised, but he would also know if schools arent opened safely we run the risk of further contamination because Research Shows younger children may not be susceptible, but they will be coming home to families and grandparents and they could carry the disease back home to them. Thats why i think clear guidance would be helpful. A lot of superintendents are at a loss. We have seen schools step up to feed people during this pandemic which is critical because we know we dont have a social safety net in this country. Now the question of how to open up schools safety is at the forefront. Thats where i think more support and help is needed. Dana goldstein wrote this, talking about the equity issues. She said new research suggestion that earlier scho falling mon hinds during virus disruptions. I think you have to think hard about this. This is part of what the pediatricians are thinking about when you talk about the centrality in the fall. We have Previous Research showing the impact of chronic absenteeism, time out of school and how that impacts learning. We can project and know that particularly in math, the amount of time that kids are away from the classroom, away from learning and supportive teachers will exacerbate the learning. If you are not in school and in structured math, you will fall further behind. For kids with learning disability who need more support or average learners, it is exacerbated further. There are equity issues in terms of parents. One of the things that happens because of the social capital of parents that have prominent positions in the media. I have schoolchildren myself. It can get coded as affluent, they have jobs and working at home. But front line workers, working class folks across this country, they just cant do it. They literally cant do it. I dont know what we will tell these people. I dont know who is the person in charge that says this is what we are doing, but this seems like an insane situation where the School District is coming up with some plan and the mom who has to work at the Grocery Store is like what is she supposed to do. This is a huge problem. On one hand we like getting parents involved with their kids. For some families this is work especially if their parents are not working and educated. Great to spend time with your children. But for those who have to work outside of the home, this is a huge challenge. Kids are often unsupervised and cant access material on their own. We should be concerned about longterm consequences. Older kids becoming discouraged, kids becoming hopeless about education and may not be pursuing college because of that discouragement. Also there is a question about what we value as a society. There was one that said i mean that could come off as excessively harsh because our fellow americans who work in those places and devastating the effects of not having them open. But all policy being done by states about controlling the virus has to be done not towards reopening the economy, but having the school as the Central Institution you can get up and running safely. Absolutely. Those are the key institutions of society. Not just academic support, but life and society, how to deal with other people. The longer kids are not in school, the more disengaged they become, and i think we see some kids experiencing great Meantal Health challenges because they are not connected to friends and teachers. We should be concerned about that as well. Its always great to talk to you. That is all in this evening. The Rachel Maddow show starts now.
