And how old is your friend. 28. But again, were not releasing his name at this time for privacy reasons. Mario, thank you so much. Our sister station wtvj talking to a man who said his friend was walking from one side of the street to another under the bridge when it was collapse and the good news is his friend was rushed to the hospital though it is unclear what his current status is. That will do it for me this hour. Ali velshi picks things up with this breaking news. Heavily traffic road. There are many schools here we are. Here is the latest on this deadly bridge collapse in florida. Im ali velshi. Police are now confirming that several people have died. This is a 950 ton pedestrian bridge that collapsed at the university of florida. Florida International University campus, it is crushed multiple vehicles. Now Miamidade Police are on the scene, encouraging residents to avoid the area. Here is how one witness described it. I was sitting at the light and i was the first car, if the light would have changed i was three seconds away from being under the bridge. But i i looked forward and all of a sudden i saw the bridge collapse and it tart it start from the left side of the bridge and it shocked me because all of the people under the bridge, theyre all dead. Theyre all dead. Because the cars are smashed and there is probably like seven or eight cars under the bridge. So it was very shocking to me and im very grateful to be alive. Thank god. I was very close to losing my life. Gabe guiterrez has arrived on the scene and joins me now. This is a brandnew bridge. It was installed on saturday and i use the term installed because theyve used a system called accelerating bridge construction. It is increasingly commonly used as a way of not disrupting traffic, being able to put up a bridge in very, very short amounts of time, being used around the country. But this is a bridge that was literally install and first used on saturday. Yeah. That is right, ali. You heard from the witness speaking with the wtvj reporter. So many questions on how could this happen and fiu was touting the installation of this bridge just five days ago. And calling it the largest pedestrian bridge moved via self propelled modular transportation and saying it is the first in the world to be constructed entirely of self cleaning concrete, according to fiu and when exposed to sunlight it captures pollutant and turns it bright white. So the University Said that this was a very advanced bridge. It was installed in just a few hours to minimize traffic disruption. It was also expected to be just under 300 feet long and 109 feet tall. We just arrived at the scene and many of the streets here are closed off. And southwest eighth street here in miamidade, a very heavily traveled road. And fiu is a campus is grown in the last few decades. So a lot more foot traffic than there used to be. This is also near the site of the miamidade youth fair which is underway right now. So a very busy, busy area. And as florida Highway Patrol said, there are people kraca trapped and a rescue effort to figure out the except of the damage. But many roads are blocked off and emergency vehicles still arriving at the scene. Trying to find the best advantage point we can but it is obviously still very active scene. A lot of shock this would happen several days after this bridge was installed. Are you close enough to be able to see what is happening in terms of rescue efforts . Weve got various shots that we keep seeing of rescue workers. But we see cars fully trapped underneath this bridge. We were we were able to arrive on the east side of the building or southwest eighth street trying to get at the scene and we saw a lot of police activity, couldnt get close enough to see the rescue and making our way to the north side, the corner of 107th and 16th street. That is north on the campus. And trying to make our way back to get a good vantage point. And a lot of traffic and weaving through traffic and so it is difficult so you are probably seeing the pictures from our affiliate and aerial as well to get a Better Vantage Point than we are. We are trying to see what we can look at. Gabe guiterrez in southern florida. This is miami, sweet water and Miamidade Police and rescue are responding, but you could see vehicles partially and fully look at those two vehicles under the bridge on the top right of your screen. There are vehicles that are fully trapped under there. And we do not have a good read. We do know from Miamidade Police that several people are dead as a result of this collapse. But it is not even clear theyve reached everybody just yet. Nbcs Mia Rodriguez is live in miami. Mia, what do you know about this . Reporter ali, we just go to the scene. You could see right behind me, this is the bridge collapse right here. Right over there you could see it sort of bent down on to southwest eighth street. Right now we are standing in the city of sweet water. This construction site is an area that they are Building Student housing. That was the impetuous for building this particular bridge in order to get students from this side of southwest eighth street to the main campus which is on the other side. This is a huge university. More than 50,000 students, it is a Public University here in miami. Joining me right now is jose mejia living here in the city of sweetwater which is where we are standing. You were out here having lunch and ill remove this so you could hear. What did you hear and what did you see when this happened just before 2 00 . I was having lunch as you said and enjoying coffee with city officials and top police and all of a sudden we hear a loud bang and i looked to one of the command staff and they say, oh, my god and then they look and say the bridge. I say, no it cant be. And one of them runs to grab their radio and sure enough it is the bridge. And at that point, we all ran and it was just a horrible scene. Over 20 cars under that bridge at least. It was very, very tragic scene. Reporter did you see anyone injured or hurt. There was a young gentleman in the red honda and there was nothing i could do but he stuck his hand out and at that point he passed away. He expired. This is a brandnew bridge. There was just a lot of fanfare to be honest within the last week or so. As this bridge was swung into place, talk about that and how people had so many High Expectations and they you could see this tragedy happen here today. One thing is you are absolutely correct. This bridge was just installed literally this past saturday at 4 00 in the morning. I was there for the unveiling ceremony. We had congressmen there and officials, and fiu was there and construction from mcm and this had a lot of fan base. A lot of push. And you also had some opposition. Nonetheless, this is a moment where it is very tragic one. And i think we need to sit back and we need to analyze exactly how did this occur . Did we wu rush into things an those are the types of things people will start asking. You just experienced it probably yourself and you saw somebody die out here today. Did you ever think you would ever see anything like this happen out here, especially with pedestrians like this. You know, the tenplus years ive lived here in the city of sweetwater i could never imagine we could accomplish such a great thing and at the same time have such a such a catastrophe happen. And although it is traumatizing, i think you wonder and ask yourself, could this have been avoided and i think it is just something that unfortunately it happens. Thank you so much. We appreciate you talking to us. Thank you. And explaining what you saw. And there you have it. Just a chaotic situation. Weve been talking about this out here in miami for quite a bit. Because again this bridge was sort of brought out here with such fanfare and such high hopes and then to have Something Like this happen just a complete shock to everyone who is out here today. Mia, thank you very much. Mia rodriguez on the scene for us with gabe guiterrez. This is a bridge that was built using accelerated bridge construction techniques and well talk more about that. But to washington for a moment. The White House Press briefing is underway with Sarah Huckabeesanders. Lets listen in. As weve said, well have conversations with specific countries but the decision will ultimately be made on a National Security basis and that would have to be determined country by country and i couldnt speak to those two specifically today. [ inaudible ] expressed a willingness to work with putin and now evidence with the sanction and the dhs and fbi new information put out today there is more bad behavior by putin and the russians since President Trump took office so is putin playing President Trump . Not at all. The president has said in the past that if we can Work Together to combat world threats on things like north korea, then we should. But the president is also shown hes been extremely tough on russia throughout his administration and you saw that today in the russia sanctions put forward. So in simple terms, is putin a friend or foe of the United States. They will to make that determine and decide whether they want to be a good or bad actor. I think you can see from the actions weve taken up until this point, well be tough on russia until they decide to change their behavior. If i can im goodk going to keep m. Because i have to get to more questions. Im going to keep moving. Sarah, does the administration feel [ inaudible ] Andrew Mccabe. That is a determination that we leave up to attorney general sessions. But we do think it is well documented that hes had troubling behavior and by most accounts a bad actor and should have some calls for concern. But that would be a determination that doj would have to make. He will not receive his full pension. That is a decision that the department of justice will have to make. If i could follow up on what john was asking about the red line. To get clarity. The question was asked about a red line if the finance questions went beyond anything relating to russia. Does the president still believe does he draw a distinction between a red line on Family Finances separately from Family Finances or Business Finances relating to a russia as it pertains to this case. The president believes very strongly there was no collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. Were going to continue to cooperate with the special counsel and for specific questions, i would refer you to them. Do you believe the timing what does this show about the timing and the speed and drawn out process of this investigation. Are the president s attorneys have repeatedly said this will be over by thanksgiving and christmas and do you believe this has been drawn out too long . Does the president believe it has been drawn out too long or is he willing to sit back and wait longer. What weve seen just this week, the House Intelligence Committee come out and say that they thought there was no collusion. Well continue to cooperate with the special council and look forward to them concluding soon. And the republicans on the committee it is not the entire committee. It was some republicans on the committee. Two republicans on the Committee Said it didnt show that at all. Individuals that have spent a great deal working on this. Well continue to cooperate with the office of the counsel and looking forward to them to come to the same collusion. And the president has made [ inaudible ] veterans and talking about taking care of them. Does he believe americans veterans are well served. The president has a large number of individuals that are working hard to make sure that the v. A. Is helping veterans as at the best level possible. We continue to review if there is anything we can do to improve on this and as we make changes well let you know. [ inaudible question ]. I dont have any Personnel Announcements but were looking for how to better the system every day. Whether it is through policy or personnel changes, not just at the top but across the bords we made a number of changes within the personnel and made sure were looking at how to best serve our nations veterans. It is the belief that [ inaudible question ]. We are working in close coordination with the United Kingdom. So the United States hasnt done its own investigation. We have a position. Ive clearly stated that were working in conjunction with the United Kingdom on this. And a cabinet member, weve heard by now that hud secretary carson and his wife picked out a 31,000 dining room set for his office and they only canceled the order when it came out in the press. Is this an appropriate use of taxpayer dollars and has the president spoken with secretary carson about it. This is something were looking into. I dont have any updates on that front at this point. Sarah. So the New York Times reported today that the white house has created a working group on north korea. To prepare for the upcoming summit between President Trump and kim jongun. Can you tell us what agencies are involved in the working group and who is chairing it and how often they are meeting and any information you could give us. Were continuing to move forward this in process but i dont have any new updates or information to provide today. Thank you. And the president has until tomorrow to sign the time one travel act which said it should be u. S. Policy to allow officials to travel to taiwan to meet with counter parts, and vice versa and will the president sign this or the final decision hasnt been made. Well keep you posted. Today h. R. Mcmaster had tough words for russia and iran when speaking the the Holocaust Museum and how much did trump have in the influence and can you explain the relationship [ inaudible ]. They are continuing to Work Together to put pressure on russia to do the right thing. Again i think you can see what the administrations view point is. Simply by looking at the actions that we took today by placing new sanctions on russia. The deputy fbi director Andrew Mccabe, the president has weighed in numerous times about mr. Mccabe on twitter. Is the president concerned about the findings of this internal investigation. You said he is not commenting on whether or not he should be fired. I said he was leaving that determination to be at the discretion of the attorney general. [ inaudible question ]. Is he considering measures that might match what the u. K. Is saying and has there been any [ inaudible ] for similar threats. I will tell you well continue to work with our ally in the United Kingdom and working close coordination with them moving forward. Well keep you posted if any specific actions actions are under consideration. Im not going to get ahead of anything that we may or may not do. But i can tell you that were going to continue to stay in close coordination with our ally. Secretary clinton was in india and said President Trump won the election because people looking back word and dont want women to succeed [ inaudible ]. What do you have to say on that . I think that is a perfect example of why Hillary Clinton is not in the white house. She is completely disconnected from the American Public and certainly i think shows her disdain for the millions and millions of americans who came out and voted for President Trump and still support him today. If i could ask two questionsond what the president said on trade. Twice he cited the mckinley tariff. Does he view that as a precedent and i ask that because that tariff pushed Consumer Prices so high republicans lost both houses of congress and the presidency afterwards. The president s focus is on making sure that were protecting american industry and american workers. He specifically i thinks it is important that we protect the steel and aluminum industry due to the fact that making sure that we have the ability to still manufacture those goods for the purpose of National Security. Can you cite any tariff in the last 150 years that has worked and done what you wanted to do now . I think weve made progress since the president s announcement. Just over a week or so ago. I think it is speci improved conversations in the negotiations weve had. Last question. At this fundraiser yesterday in missouri, the president talking about environmentally unfriendly standards of the japanese allegedly applying on u. S. Imported automobiles. Talked about a a bowling ball test where a bowling ball is dropped from 20 feet in the air on the hood of a car and if it dents the car, it doesnt qualify. He said this is horrible. I worked in japan for about 20 years, i covered the automotive industry, i dont recall anything like this. No one weve spoken with in the industry recalls it did you speak with the president about this and where did he get this from . The president has been talking about unfair trade practices for decades. It is not new for him. Part of the reason he was elected was to end unfair trade practices and push for free, fair and reciprocal trade so American Goods could compete in more foreign markets. Obviously hes joking about this particular test but it illustrates the creative ways some countries are able to keep American Goods out of their markets. Thank you so much. Sarah huckabeesanders leaving the White House Press briefing. She talked about the president and the canadian trade deficit the president claims the u. S. Has which isnt true. The president after learning it wasnt true tweeted that lie again earlier today. He also talked about the confirmation hearings for mike pompeo and gina haspel as secretary of state and head of the cia. He said they are two highly qualified people and called Andrew Mccabe a bad actor and said that the president has been extremely tough on russia. In fact, we do have news just recently and that is that the Mueller Investigation has subpoenaed the Trump Organization for some documents. The Trump Organization has released a statement through their lawyer saying since july of 2017, we have advise the public that the Trump Organization is cooperative and including the special counsel and responding to their requests and this is old news and our assistant with the investigations remains the same today. Today inaccurate information from the Trump Organization. It is not old news, it is brandnew news that the Mueller Investigation has subpoenaed the Trump Organization. So a lot of on fis case today. Peter alexander trying to get through some of it as it relates to the trump administrations view on russia. I saw you trying to get some satisfaction out of a question to Sarah Huckabeesanders. What were you trying to get at with her. Well play that exchange in a minute. But now Robert Mueller is subpoenaing the information as it relates to russia and other topics from the trump organize, the first time we know theyve been going to the heart and the headquarters of Donald Trumps own businesses, the Trump Organization itself, the white house was trying to puff out his chest and say, look at all that we are doing in terms of sanctions against russia. First for the meddling in the election, something that congress had mandated months ago. Now today announcing sanctions against 19 individuals and five entities and more broadly the dhs, department of Homeland Security and fbi today announced the fact that they now know russia has been troying to infiltrate systems, trying to meddle in the United States outside of the election. But in the course of the last year, including into the United States energy system. As it exists here. So i try to ask Sarah Huckabeesanders specifically about this relationship between the president and russias president , Vladimir Putin. Take a listen. Expressed a willingness to work with putin as evidenced by the sanctions and the fbi new information they put out today, there is more bad behavior by putin and the russians since President Trump took office so it putin playing President Trump. Not at all. The president has said in the past that if we can Work Together to combat world threats on things like north korea, then we should. But the president is also shown that hes been extremely tough on russia throughout his administration and i think particularly you saw that today in the russia sanctions that were put forward. So is putin a friend or foe of the United States . I think that is something that russia is going to have to make that determination. Theyre going to have to decide whether or not they want to be a good actor or a bad actor. I think you can see from the actions that weve taken up until this point were going to be tough on russia until they decide to change their behavior. Reporter obviously this question was intended to get to the heart of the issues weve been focused on since the very day the president assumed office, this continued willingness to express warmth and almost embrace Vladimir Putin and even as Sarah Huckabeesanders indicated they are tough when it comes to the issues. The bottom line is that is not the action that weve witnessed and not the language that weve witnessed from this white house. One of the things that was notable as it relates to the ex spy, the former russian spy and the poisoning situation that mystery taking place there, Sarah Sanders said that we agreep with what the u. K. Has done, france and germany are on board as well. But it took a while for them to get to that Conclusion Even though they had toughened up the language. It took a while for them to get to sanctioning these russians as will. More than a while. I want to clarify because there is so much lying coming out of the white house today. The president after knowing the United States does not have a trade deficit with canada tweeted again that it does. It is an absolute bold faced lie. Alan from the Trump Organization has handed to the information about the investigation by the mueller the mueller team. The subpoenas by saying this is old news. And you reported this is not old news. Who we are are not part of the investigation or the Trump Organization are first hearing about this. Lets be clear. What is certainly is not old news is the f fact shes subpoen fact these subpoenas have been which is what the headline is today. And whether they are cooperating. That may have been going on for quite sometime. And that is significant to the headline today is Robert Mueller must not be satisfied with that conversation or he wouldnt subpoena for more information, as it reilates to the issue went to the federal government statistics on the website for the office of the United States trade representative, when it comes to goods and services for the most recent year at least data was available to us, 2016, the United States has a trade surplus of 12. 5 billion with canada. Correct. It is just a fact. And the canadians have the same number. So to say otherwise, it is absolutely patently a lie. Peter alexander, thank you very much. Yet another day in which the white house and the president are lying to the american people. If you are just joining us, police are confirming several people have died after a 950 ton pedestrian bridge collapsed near the campus of florida International University in sweetwater and part of miami. Crushing multiple vehicles, one man described for us what the bridge collapse sounded like. Here is what he said. It was like an explosion. It was like a bomb. It was right behind us and it could have been us under that bridge. Thanks to god it wasnt. And unfortunately there are a lot of lives that are lost but they did a bad job constructing the bridge while there is traffic. Because that is something that that is half there is something that theyre building and it is not built correctly and why would you continue building something when there is traffic moving under you. That is not correct they did a horrible job because of their their stupidity and there are lost lives right now because they did not close down the street like they did five days ago when they start to build the bridge and they should have locked the street down so that incident wouldnt have happened. And maybe the bridge would have fell and there would be nobody and since they did do that, there are lives lost and families broken. They did a horrible job and thank god that wasnt under us. But it was a horrible experience and i cant it is traumatizing. Lets go to Mia Rodriguez on the scene. What do you know . Reporter you heard that concern right there in that sound bite. Why wasnt traffic stopped when they were working on this pedestrian bridge. This is the pedestrian bridge, you could see it right behind me. It is sort of folded down on to southwest eighth street. That is a major thoroughfare here in southwest miamidade county. That is the main campus of florida International University. Weve talked about this before. I went to that campus so im extremely familiar with this area. More than 50,000 students at the university if there is one saving grace, it spring break. There were there is far fewer students this week than would have been normally but again this is the middle of the day. There is heavy traffic in this particular area. Basically at all hours of the night because just west of here less than a mile from here is the there turnpike, a major interchange here in florida, you have cars heading and coming off the turnpike and heading toward downtown miami which is to the east and so many people say there was a lot of traffic and it was lunchtime, it was just before 2 00 an extended lunch time here in miami when this happened. And again, weve heard from the florida Highway Patrol and they say there are at least a half dozen vehicles trapped underneath this pedestrian bridge. This started with much fanfare. The university had pushed for the construction of this bridge to safely be able to move students and faculty across that major thoroughfare from this city of the city of sweet water to the youve and just a few days ago they swing it into place. That is how it is being described and they were looking forward to opening it up officially next year for use. The construction site that you see behind me, not necessarily related to the bridge. But they are going to be building some Student Housing and other things here which was part of the reason why they wanted this bridge in place before that happened. Again in order to be able to move people from one side of the road to the other. But weve had this tragedy out here today. A lot of questions why wasnt the road shut down. If they were in fact working on the bridge at that time. And was there some kind of structural deficiency involved in all of this. So to be clear, mia, the bridge for the use of pedestrians was not open yet . Reporter correct. It was not open yet. There had been about a week ago or so sort of this swinging into place. There were a lot of dignitaries out here, people from local municipalities and districts that were sort of applauding this bridge had finally been built again after so many years of trying to get Something Like this done out here for the students and the faculty that go to florida International University. Mia. Well stay close as you learn more about this. Of course we are trying to get as much information as we can, we do hear from police that several people have died but we dont have a up to date number. But we are looking at live images and there are cars that remain trapped underneath. This is on eighth street, this is while the pedestrians were not on top of the bridge. There were vehicles underneath it. So were trying to get a count and a update on that. Michael como with the Engineering Firm cme associates. Hes familiar with the type of bridge construction that was used here. It is something called accelerated bridge construction. Which was used to build this pedestrian bridge that collapsed in miami. Michael, this is a ive been doing studying on this in just the last half an hour or so, since weve learned about this. This is a commonly or it is increasingly commonly used a way to brild bridg build bridges does not disrupt the traffic. Can you tell me about accelerated bridge construction. Sure. Id be happy to. The construction is very common these days in the u. S. It is under development for a number of years. Well over ten years where engineers have looked to build bridges more quickly. Primarily to reduce impacts to traffic. Especially on very busy roads an the idea is to put in portions of the bridge or the bridge is off site and quickly install the bridge onsite with minimal road closures and minimal impact to traffic. You are a Civil Engineer and specialized in bridge and structural design. You were in fact the the superintendent of the Connecticut Department of transportation in the Bridge Design section. Is there anything about accelerated bridge construction that should give people pause and say is it as safe as traditional bridge construction which is does take longer and does affect traffic. It could be as safe as any other form of construction. As a matter of fact, one of the benefits to accelerated construction is by installing bridges quickly, we limit the amount of time that work zones are in place. When you drive through a Construction Zone and there are barriers and signs and reduced lane widths and things like that. Many people get injured and even killed in work zones every year. Due to construction activities. So our goal is always to look to build the bridge quickly to reduce the amount of time it is in place while it could be a safer way of building bridges for that reason, so we we look to reduce and get the bridge built as quickly as possible. Again by prefab rick ating portions of the bridge off site and installing it quick lirks and were look at an animation. This isnt real video, an animation once it is open and people are using i it was installed on saturday but not yet to be open for quite sometime. Has this technology, accelerated bridge construction been around to have a Safety Record as compared to traditional bridge building. I would say so. The federal highway was tracking the number of accelerated bridge construction in the United States, they stopped keeping track because the numbers were over 3000 or 4,000 proj erkts so it is not just experimental. Hundreds of bridges are built every year. Probably more than a hundred of bridges are built across the country. Virtually every state d. O. T. Is employeeing the construction techniques on a regular basis so the type of construction that they have developed are very much Standard Practice now in the United States and actually even across the world. Thank you for telling us more about the accelerated bridge construction under which this installed bridge was constructed. The chief technical officers at cme associates go. I want to go to wtvj reporter on the scene. Tell us what you know about this . Well, it is a pretty chaotic scene. There are dozens of first responders, Police Officers from multiple agencies. The florida Highway Patrol and Miamidade Police as well as the University Police on scene. I saw dozens of ambulances, two specifically taking patients and at this time i can just tell you there are many wore youred people standing around. Im not near anyone right now because im actually moving locations trying to get closer to the scene. But the roads are blocked off. This is a very it is a main road. It is a very traffic traveled road, i dont live tootoo far from here and i got several calls asking if i was okay. And contacted people to see if they were okay. But very concerning because seeing those images of the vehicles squished with a bridge on top of them and you cant identify the cars. It is obviously very worrisome and so i could here there are many people concerned standing around trying to know what is going on and who is under that bridge. Laura, you were one of the first people on the scene not already there when the bridge collapsed. What is your sense of the number of cars that are trapped under there and have you seen them extract anybody . I personally havent. So this happened on 109th avenue and the closest i could get was 112th avenue, from chopper 6 from our chopper, for our helicopter i could see about fo four cars but that is from the aerial aerial images. By the time i arrived, i believe the vehicles were covered with yellow tarp so i couldnt even make out the make or model of the vehicle. All i could see was again a Large Police Presence and i could see the bridge that that was that was collapsed. Mia, what were just going word from rick scott, the governor, hes on his way and tweeting hes on the way to Florida International to be briefed by local Law Enforcement and university officials. Laura, what is your sense of the activity around there . Are they have you seen more rescue workers coming in . What are they able to do because latest weve seen is that some are on their stomach and reaching in and trying to figure things out. There is a crane onsite but i would imagine it is too early for them to be lifting anything out of position . Yes. I saw that crane arrive on scene a few minutes ago. I would say ten minutes ago at moment. Again from where i was stanlding and right now im standing and right now im moving but where i was standing i couldnt see any extractions. I think the aerial images are better than what i could see on the ground. I did speak to someone notified their friend was injured and transported to kendall Regional Hospital and he was very emotional. Crying and just it was it is tough to speak to him obviously because he was just finding this information out and rushing over to the hospital to see how his friend was doing. It appears the friend survived because he was transported, but we dont know what condition he was in. It is a 28yearold man. It is remarkable. These pikes as you said, these aerial images are remarkable because we are seeing those cars some par sthally and some fully trapped under the bridge that has collapsed. This bridge was only swung into place, installed on saturday. Laura rodriguez of wtvj, one of the first reporters on the scene. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. It was it was like an explosion. It was like a bomb. It was right behind us. And it could have been us under that bridge. Thank god it wasnt. And unfortunately there is a lot of lives that are lost but i think they did a bad job constructing the bridge while there is traffic because that is something that is half built. There is something something they are building and it is not built correctly yet. Why would you t would you con building something. And weve done a horrible job because of the influence because of their stupidity, that is where there are lost lives because they didnt close down the street like they did five days ago when they started to build the bridge and they should have locked the street down so that incident wouldnt have happened. Maybe the bridge would have fell and there would have been nobody but since they didnt do that, now there are a lot of lives lost and families broken. So they did a horrible job and thank goodness it wasnt over us. It was a a horrible experience and it was traumatizing. It is unbelievable. Hes making a reference to accelerated bridge construction which was used to construct this bridge which was installed on saturday and is now collapsed at florida International University. We understand that governor rick scott is on his way to the scene. We also have a statement from an Engineering Company involved in the construction of bridge. It said were stunned by todays tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge under construction over southwest eighth street in miami. Our deepest sympathies are with all those affect and well cooperate to review what happened and why. In our 40year history nothing like this has ever happened before. Our entire team mourns the loss of life and the association with this devastating tragedy and our prayers go out. And we have heard from marco rubio in a tweet hes spoken to transport secretary lane chow and the ntsb is senting sendi team to investigate. Brandon lee lives near the bridge and heard the collapse. Fiu is very large, about 56,000 or 57,000 students. What did you hear and what did you see . Brandon, do i have you there . Yeah. Hi. Hello. What did you hear and what did you see . I live on 109th so i was on the phone with my dad and suddenly saw the whole ground shake and then my roommate ran in and said the bridge just collapsed so i hang up the phone and rush outside and see the bridge it collapsed and over five cars i was shocked. What do you what do you knee about this bridge . It was constructed in prefabrication and just put into place this weekend on saturday but it wasnt being used yet. It was not being used yet. From what i can understand is that the walkways for the bridge were not finished. So it wasnt done. So you couldnt get up there. Anything about it strike you as usual . It just looks like a bridge. Slightly different construction but pictures make it look like a bridge a particularly nice one at that. I would say just the reason why it was put up, i think saturday morning it was put up. I woke up one morning and suddenly there was a bridge here. We were really shocked, overnight the bridge was put up. It was amazing. And the construction is meant to avoid sort of interruptions to traffic. But that is obviously go to be something that folks will be asking about. What is the were showing some animation of what the bridge this is a walkway is what brandon is talking about. It was not in place so you couldnt get to the bridge because you cant walk out. But here is an animation. What is the reaction of students on campus right now . Everybody is in shock. Everyone i have called and messages are coming in from all over the place, asking if im all right and okay. We still dont know who was involved and just hoping everyone around 109 was clear of the bridge. But i know there are a lot of fatalities already so it is a tragic thing. Are you how close are you to the bridge at the moment . Right now i am blocked off. We were trying to get closer because we are right across from the bridge and everything is roped off and we cant get on to the campus. Were trying to figure out and get more information about what that what that rescue is doing. We have aerial shots right now. Brandan, thank you for joining me. Brandan lee is an fiu student who heard and saw the bridge collapse. I think we have Mia Rodriguez available for us. I will check because shes been talking to a lot of people in the area. Mia, what you have been able to glean since we last talked . Reporter well, what ive been able to find out here, ali, there was a trigger point in that sense as to why this particular bridge was being built. So last year in august there was an 18yearold girl named alexis dale who died while crossing southwest eighth street. It went out to the whole University Community and sorry about this and questions of what we can do to possibly make it safer for people to make their way over to campus. That is why this pedestrian bridge was sort of accelerated into place. That is why they wanted to get it built as quickly as possible. Again trying to avoid another life being taken by trying to cross this very, very heavy heavily traffic southwest eighth street here in miamidade county. Now what witnesses have told us it was just before 2 00 p. M. , a lost people were taking long lunches and some businesses nearby where people were having coffee. And they heard a boom. And that something said, well it couldnt possibly be the new bridge but sure enough, it was. And this is a bridge, again, that was just sort of debuting with the last ten says or so. There were a lot of dignity airs because the bridge was swung into place. That is how it is described. It was not open. It would be open next year in part because the construction site is where they are putting up some additional student apartments and some businesses and there will be more pedestrians in this area which is again why they thought it was so important to have a pedestrian bridge in this particular location. But again, just before 2 00 p. M. Today, you had that collapse. And this is a very, very busy road. Why traffic was not stopped, while they were working on it, it is not clear at this point. But there would have been a lot of traffic. Again because there is a major interchange, at the florida turnpike where it meets eighth street and people are coming on and off the highway going to the campus, whether they are heading to miami or west toward the turnpike. So again, a lot of questions out here about how this happened, what were they doing on the bridge exactly. What were we working on. A couple of witnesses have told me that they saw four people standing on the bridge just ten minutes before it collapsed. What happened to those four individuals is not clear at this point. Where they off the bridge when it collapsed . What we what were they doing at the time. I can tell you within the last few minutes or so, we saw a crane out here attempting to move some is of the heavy concrete slabs that you see back here. They sort of stopped for the moment. But they were getting into place to move them presumably at some point they have to lift this up because again, there are at least half a dozen vehicles excuse me, half a dozen vehicles trapped underneath this pedestrian bridge. Mia, let me be clear about this. The bridge was installed on saturday. It is not meant to be open for some time. I just spoke to brandon lee a student who said that the walkway to get up to the bridge wasnt in place. So if someone were on this bridge, they wouldnt be normal pedestrians, because they wouldnt have a way to get up on top of that bridge . Reporter correct. These were workers according to this particular witness that we spoke to. Workers on the bridge ten minutes before it collapsed. They did not see the collapse or know what happened to the four individuals but they did note they had seen four people up on the bridge, workers. And why they were up there and what was happening before the collapse, that is not clear at this point. Thank you very much. Well stay with you on this reporting. I want to go to florida senator bill nelson. Senator, every time i talk to you it is because of a catastrophe. The last time we spoke it was about parkland but you are one of the people who has access to information that our viewers are interested. In what do you know about the fatalities at the scene . Ive talked to the mayor, ive talked to the police chiefs, ive talked to the secretary of transportation, elaine chow and the chairman of the ntsb, i think they are ready to launch the investigation. Theyre trying to get to miami right now. And what ive been told is it looks like at least six deaths and it may be as manyten. And as your previous person talking has said, there are a number of vehicles that are still underneath this bridge. So, we may not know for a while until they can get to them how many are actually been hopefully not crushed, but still in those cars. We can only hope, although youve seen the images, sir. And it is something else. I mean, it is not often we see a bridge completely collapse under those underneath. Whats your have you heard anybody obviously its very hard to know what happened here, but we are looking at a bridge that was just installed that is just collapsed and a lot of people are starting to ask questions as to how does that actually happen. This isnt the infrastructure problem we routinely talk about where bridges are old and in need of repair. This is brandnew. Yeah, it sounds like its an engineering or a construction problem or, as your previous guest said, that it wasnt supposed to be used because it wasnt all properly installed. All of this is why we need the investigation launched. A National Organization such as the National Transportation safety board is an appropriate place to do it. And theyll give us, then, all of the answers. Senator bill nelson, thank you for joining us. Well stay close to you as you get more information. Senator bill nelson of florida. Thanks. With his information that there are six deaths so far and possibly as many as ten, but there are cars still trapped underneath that bridge and it is not clear what the condition is of people who remain in those cars. So, we will continue to cover that closely. Were going to take a break. When we come back more on the Mueller Investigation, new developments you need to hear about. Stay with us. Just before news broke of the florida pedestrian bridge cla collapse in miami, we have breaking news from the New York Times. Muellers subpoena Trump Organization demanding documents about russia. Thats key. The Trump Organization. According to two people briefed on the matter, mueller has subpoenaed the donald Trump Organization to turnover documents including some related to russia. The times reports this will be the first known time the special counsel demanded documents directly related to President Trumps businesses. Not clear why mueller issued the subpoena. Take a listen to White House Press secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders and her reaction. The question was asked about a red line if the finance questions went beyond anything relating to russia. Does the president still believe does he draw a distinction, do you know, between a red line on Family Finances separately from Family Finances or Business Finances relating to russia as it pertains to this case . The president believes very strongly there was no collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. Were going to continue to cooperate with the special counsel and for questions specific to the Trump Organization, i would refer you to them. And we have a statement from the lawyer for the Trump Organization who says, since july 2017 we have advised the public that the Trump Organization is fully cooperative with all investigations including the special counsel and is responding to their requests. This is old news and our assistance and cooperation with the various investigations remains the same today. Kelly odonnell at the white house, sadly for alan, the lawyer for the Trump Organization, while he put it in a statement, it is untrue this is old news, this is actually very new news. Reporter this is a Big Development because we now have this going beyond the campaign, beyond the time in the white house and to the heart of the Trump Organization. The president defines himself as a businessman and now the special counsel wants some sort of documentation there. Now, we could imagine a scenario where because of the trump tower meeting in june 2016 there might be records around that that could be the sort of in the possession of the Trump Organization. It could be about financial dealings with any properties and activities that relate to russia. That could be part of it. We dont know exactly how far this goes, but again, the president has said in the past that the purview of the special counsel should remain election meddling. If it does take a path that goes into family or Business Finances, that could be something where the president would see that is a reach too far and it could possibly trigger those conversations weve seen again about does the president have the authority to remove the special counsel through the steps at the justice department. It is a real change. Weve had russia and three acts today. The u. K. Poisoning, the new sanctions and now this Trump Organization subpoena. Ali . Kelly, thanks very much. Kelly odonnell at the white house. Danny joins me now. What do you make of this development . Trump had warned Robert Mueller to stay inside dont cross over a red line. One would assume that he is looking for information about whether the Trump Organization had something to do with russia. This subpoena covers muellers bases because its a deuces tecum. A subpoena duces tecum is more than a file cabinet. It can be a broad as a huge swath of documents that could take months to go through and the subpoena makes their obligations crystal clear. What the defense team should do at this point, immediately call the u. S. Attorneys. Immediately call the mueller team. Open the dialogue with them, find out whether theyre willing to voluntarily limit because a motion to quash or limit a subpoena, asking a court to do it is a very, very steep burden to meet. All right. We are going to find out what hopefully more this is all about. Thank you to you danny for this. And that does it for me for this hour. Thank you for watching. I want to hand it over to my friend Nicolle Wallace right now for deadline white house. Hi, everyone. Its 4 00 in new york. We are following that breaking news in florida. Well have a live report coming up. But we begin with the breaking news in the special counsel investigation into potential ties between donald trump and russia. The New York Times out with brandnew reporting this afternoon that bob mueller is using his subpoena power to obtain documents related to russia and Donald Trumps businesses. From that piece, quote, the order is the first known time that the special counsel demanded documents directly related to President Trumps businesses, bringing the investigation closer to the president. The president s businesses, of course, a red line for the president when it comes to the Mueller Investigation. At least according to the president. Here he is in an interview several months ago with the New York Times with that warning. If mueller was looking at your finances and your Family Finances, unrelated to russia, is that a red line . Would that be a breach of what his actual
