More than 333,000 americans have died. 63,000 of americans died this month alone, making december the deadliest month yet. And more than 118,000 americans are spending their holidays in hospital beds suffering from covid19. Thats according to the covid tracking project. And now states are preparing for what could be the worst surge in new case this is country has ever seen. And that is thanks to the millions of americans who decided to travel for christmas. Lets start with the latest on President Trump signing into law that muchneeded 2 million Coronavirus Relief package. Leann is on the hill for us. Monica alba is in florida where the president is staying. Well start with leann. Bottom line, that big question, when can folks expect that check in the mail or a deposit in their account . That is the big question. Lets back up a little bit. At the beginning of last week, treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin said checks would be in peoples Bank Accounts this week. That was before the president delayed and did not sign the covid relief bill as soon as it got to hill. Now its been a long weekend of people waiting. The president ended up sign iin it after a lot of political pressure last night. So when to people get those checks . With the holiday coming up on friday, its expected perhaps as early as next week, but my sources on capitol hill are trying to still figure out owl those details and have asked the Treasury Department based on the timeline, hopefully in the next week or so. Okay. Lets turn to monaco for a moment. The delay in signing this bill means that the Unemployment Benefits for millions of americans lapsed around christmas. A lot of folks could lose out on a muchneeded week of relief aid. He didnt ask for any changes like he threatened. So the question a lot of folks are asking is what was the point of all of it . Right, its really a president flexing the very limit thats left of his powers in these final weeks in office. But he wasnt able to accomplish much, craig, to your question, apart from delaying that help in relief that americans need with millions wondering about that lapse in Unemployment Benefits. Whether that will be able to be made up or what the size of their checks will be since there are questions about whether that 600 amount will be able to be increased to 2,000. But those are questions the president is not answering any any form. He hasnt had Public Events since he arrived in florida five days ago. Instead hes been spending the majority of his time on the golf course. Thats where he is right now. He hasnt any questions from reporter or this is a president that likes to do things with a the lot of fanfare. But that was done behind closed doors. We should also point out this is a familiar pattern of the president who likes to create drama at the final moment. Insert a wrench in the plans. But in this rare reversal he did step back. This whole crisis was of his own making. His delay and the drama that me nasinitiated, he was the one th could solve it. It did avoid a government shutdown. But had we found ourselves in that position, really the only one to blame for that would have been the president himself. Really quickly, were expecting another vote there in the house just a few hours from now as i understand it. This one is for that 2,000 direct payment to americans. Does that mean. Republicans have blocked this in the house and the senate before. But today in the house, its going to need twothirds the support of members. Im hearing from sources, republican and democrat, that they actually do expect it to pass. Senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, his republican conference is not keen on bigger checks. What will they do if it passes. So theres lots of questions and then it gets back to your first question to me if the amount of the stimulus check is changed or inkrecreased, does that delay t checks from getting into peoples Bank Accounts. Tease are questions we dont have answers to yet. Big thanks to both of you on this monday morning. Some quick relief is around the corner for millions of americans. But officials are warning from a Public Health per spect ithings could get worse frr here. We very well might see a post seasonal in the sense of christmas new years surge. As i have describe d it, as a surge upon a surge. So i share the joe biden that it might get worse. Von hilliard is live for us in kansas. Also with us is the founder and ceo of advancing health equity. Shes also a yahoo news medical contributor. Ill start with you on the ground. They are preparing to send vaccine doses to longterm care facilities. It could seem if in the parking lot, what dwrou say . Exact ly. This is more than a cvs store. This is the place where we have seen pharmacists head out the front door and load up their own pickup trucks to head out to longterm care facilities. Because here, kansas is just one of 36 states that is sending out vaccinations to longterm care facilities. You saw some initial states. But today 36 states are beginning this process. We have watched them leave stores to head out to these facilities to inject those residents with their first doses of the Pfizer Vaccine here in kansas. I want to led you hear the conversation. We were able to really facilitate the distribution of the vaccine across the entire country. We have about 1,100 sites across the country. And we got 15 to 20 in the metro area. And what were doing with those vaccines is coming into the store. And thats where the pharmacists take it on site. And the sites are strategically located so we can cover the gee fwrask area where the senior facilities are and the need for the vax seern is. Its more than a store. This is one of the 1,100 depots around the country. I was talking to an aid here who said its imperative. And because they have that reach particularly into more of the Rural Communities in places like western kansas where they are able to go and ultimately administer the vaccinations out to places that are a little bit less populated. Those who have loved ones in a longterm care facility, its good they are finally starting to get the first dose of the vaccine. Hilliard for us there in kansas. Thank you so much for that. Dr. Blackstock, i turn to you now. The fda, as you know, gave that emergency use authorization for the first vaccine. 17 days ago. Von just showed us how its starting to reach communities across the country. How long do you surmise its going to take for a vaccine to become widely available to anyone who wants it. Folks like me and you. Actually, ill be getting my vaccine later this week. Because im a Front Line Health Care worker. But there are going to be several prioritization groups. Theres going to be a 1b group with a group of special workers and people over 74. And then the 1c group and others before the general public. So i think optimistically, were looking at the summer of june and july hopefully by august that the vaccine will be available to the general public or anyone who wants the vaccine. Do you agree with the statement we heard from dr. Fauci that the darkest days are probably sill ahead of us . Yeah, i absolutely agree. Im concerned because i know that air travel, car travel has been at its highest since the pandemic began because of the holiday season. In order to get this virus under control, we also need individuals role. So its not just the twostate lead etc. To put restrictions in place and testing, put we need individuals to make responsible choices. I know people are tired. They want to be with their family members. But were going to see with this traveling is were going to see another surge and probably the worst numbers that we have ever seen in this pandemic. Before we let you go, i want to talk about this oped that you wrote for the washington post. I read it. I would encourage our viewers and listeners to read it as well. And you essentially ask america to say dr. Susan mars name it was a black woman. It was a family physician and she died from covid19 before she did though she said that her white doctor made her feel like a drug addict. Refusing to prescribe additional narcotics when she complained of pain. The doctor didnt listen to her lungs suggesting she should go home. You wrote, quote, no matter how well intentioned our Health Care System is, it has not ruled out the false idea of a hierarchy of human valuation based on skin color. And the falser idea that if there were such a hierarchy, white people would be at the top. And dr. Blackstock if a physician cant get the care that they feel like they need, if a physician cant, where are we . Thats why myself ask my three colleagues were also black women felt the need to write this piece. To humanize dr. Moore, but also to bring to the forefront that education doesnt protect black people. We see the same patterns of negligence, ignorance, of our needs in Health Care Settings regardless of our socioeconomic status and our educational background. So in this opt ep, we are calling on Health Care Systems and institutions to be held accountable to look at their policies and practices, to be explicit about practicing antiracism. Thats the only way to prevent what happened to dr. Moore from happening again. This needs to stop. And mr. Moore could have been our sister, our mother, our friend. She could have been us. So thats why we wrote this piece on her behalf. Dr. Blackstock, stay with us. Were going to come back to you in a few moments. Thats because of this story. A new mutated strain of coronavirus. Experts warn its more contagious and reeking havoc in the United Kingdom. So will todays new restrictions to stop it from coming here work. First, well go live to that breaking news in nashville. New video shows the moment of fridays explosion. I talked to one of the agents running the investigation about that search for a possible motive. H for a possible motive [grunting noise] ill take that. Woohoo 30 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar. Ensure max protein. With nutrients to support immune health. E im lea. Steve. N. And we live in north pole, alaska. Im a retired school counselor. [lea] im a retired art teacher. [steve] we met online about 10 years ago. As i got older, my hearing was not so good so i got hearing aids. My vision was not as good as it used to be, got a change in prescription. But the this missing was my memory. I saw a prevagen commercial and i thought, that makes sense. I just didnt have to work so hard to remember things. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Were following breaking news on this monday. This new video shows what it was like inside a nashville hostile. Moment of fridays explosion. Investigators say the suspect Anthony Warner died in that explosion. And this morning on today, i asked the director of the Tennessee Bureau of investigation what we know at this point about his motive. Its to talk to the individual. We will not be able to do that in this case. So a lot of it will be what we can gather through interviews and ultimately what the evidence will point us toward, but we may never find out the impact republic behind the activity that took place. Mr. Brucer has made his way to nashville. And its going to be lifted at the end of the hour. The tennessee governor has already asked fema to help with debris removal. What is does it look like down there . Reporter ill let you take a look at it. We know fbi agents are still at the blast site. The place where on christmas morning, Anthony Warner had a suicide bombing. Once the curfew is lifted, what we can see now, this is the closest we have been able to get since that bombing on christmas morning. But you can see that yellow bus that was pulled in. Right beyond that, theres a big crater in the ground. Im sure you can see some of the images we have been slow showing over the course. Now it was that blast site that was key to helping them identify the bomber. The suspected bomber, they found dna evidence at that site. They called it human tissue. We learned later that they were able to match that tissue with dna they uncovered from another source. From an old that they used. They were able to in this massive debris field find a piece of the rv. The rv parked there hours before it actually detonated. They found a piece of that rv and was able to use the Identification Number and match that to Anthony Warner. So they got this done fairly quickly. It was the help of a crucial tip from the public combined with that forensic evidence that helped them make the quick identification. The fact that they were able to imagine the tissue with the d dna, roughly nine hours is pretty remarkable. Equally remarkable the six officers who ran toward danger and helped evacuate folks. They saved lives just before this bomb went off. This is part of what they said it was like. I just see orange and hear a loud boom. Were walking towards each other and us just saw the biggest flames i have ever seen, the bigs explosion. Im trying to make sure our people were okay. What more can you tell me about these nashville heroes . That was definitely an emotional and powerful press conference. Giving us a glimpse that we usually dont get and we dont hear from officers. These officers were there in the hours before or at least an hour before that bomb, ploeded they talked about the race to clear people up. It was airing that warning saying that this is a bomb. It will detonate and turning into somewhat of a countdown warning when that explosion would happen. It also felt the impact of that explosion. They are stumbling to get out of the way. A lot of folks. 40 buldings damaged. Amazingly though, no lives lost. Joe bidens nshl security and Foreign Policy teams will be briefing him. We also expect to hear from the president live for the first time in a week. We expect he will deliver marks here in wilmington about the domestic Terror Threat following that apparent suicide bomb iing that wurp just talkin about. Separate from the nashville bombing, we know that current fbi officials and current dhs officials have talked extensively about and raised repeated warnings about the domestic threat posed by extremist groups and white supremacist groups and not heard President Trump address threat in anien constituentive way. We just saw that last week. He spoke about the covid crisis following that suspected russian hack. Morning joejoe joe bidens se. He has four left to go. He has to name a labor secretary. Someone to lead the Small Business administration. And also an attorney general. Someone to lead the justice department. Doug jones and sally yates. Competent and qualified. The question is who among them could be the most easily confirmed in a divided senate. And we wont fully know the m e makeup of that until the georgia runoffs next week. Jeff bennett in wilmington. Thank you, sir is. Thanks as always. Countries are closing borders as a more contagious strain of covid hits europe. The gate keepers. Were going to take a look new steps today to stop that mutant strain from come iing here. Fine 2020 thats it calling anyone with grit change this, change that, but dont ever quit 2020s done a new era has begun so keep pushing forward. Because this is twenty twenty won the future is still ours to win. Make a different future start different at godaddy. Com so you want to make the best that means selling everything. Intuit quickbooks helps Small Businesses be more successful with payments, payroll, banking and live bookkeeping. Starting today anyone flying from the United Kingdom to the United States has to show proof of a negative pcr test for coronavirus. Why the change . A new strain of covid19 has already spread from britain and is now been detected in japan, parts of europe and even canada. Nbcs hol molly hunter is live heathrow airport. It doesnt look like a lot of planes there. What steps are being contained or taken to contain this new strain. Reporter thats right. This is a very quiet heathrow runway. Normally planes are whizzing by here. I havent seen one take off for at least 15 minutes. But this new uk strain that you mentioned, scientists believe is possibly 70 more contagious and already spreading around the world. You mentioned japan. Its been detected from sweden to spain and parts of australia. So japan has stopped foreign nationals from entering the country altogether. More than 40 countries and most of europe have stopped uk planes and then the u. S. Is now requiring any traveler heading from the uk, heading from heathrow to the u. S. To provide proof of a negative pcr test, some 72 hours before taking off. Now there are 15 u. S. Bound flights leaving today, with us combine these new restrictions with the government to contain the virus is stay at home unless you have a essential reason to leave. It means those planes are really, reallimenty. Molly hunter in london for us, thank you. I want to turn once again to dr. Bla blackstock, founder of advancing health equity. According to officials, this new strain could possibly already be in the United States. Dr. Fauci has said its likely already here. How worried should we actually be . We know that viruses mutate. How concerned should americans be about the mutation of this particular strain of this particular virus . So first, ipt to take a few steps back. So yes, viruses mutate. And actually they mutate everytime they replicate. So this happens very often. What we do know is that through modelling, they have set this variant more transmissible. 70 more transmistable than other variants. That really needs to be studied in animal models. But even more importantly, we know that even more effective than travel bans are those preventive measures that we have been talking about since the beginning of the pandemic. Mask wearing, physical distancing, restricting large crowds and group gatherings, thats what really works. Also know that the variance wt spreading around the uk as early as september is. And its likely it may even be here in the u. S. The uk has surveillance in a robust way that the u. S. Doesnt have is. And i think we probably will find this variant has ended up here. But i will say he will need to follow those Public Health measures that we know work so well. A vaccine is here. However it. Im sorry. I didnt mean to interrupt ewe. I was saying a vaccine is here. Its a light at the end of the tunnel, but the tunnel is very lo long. It will be awhile until the entire population is vaccinated. You just used a phrase i hadnt heard before. Engineer gnomic surveillance. It was widespread, robust over the pond. What is this surveillance you speak of . Should we be doing it . The Public Health department in the uk essentially put resources to study the different strains of viruss that are out there. So thats why they were able to pick up this variant early on. They saw a surge in these particular areas. They studied the variant and found these mutations. So thats something that the u. S. Also need to invest in in terms of our Public Health measures. Doctor, we always learn something from you. Thank you. If i dont see you before, happy new year. You too. Happy new year. A few hours from now, the house will be voting on the new covid relief legislation. But for those waiting hours in line for food, lines like this, will the help be enough . Im going to talk to a woman who several food banks in texas who runs several food banks and well talk about whether the help matches the need. D well talk about whether the help matches the need. Right now, millions of our fellow americans are waiting for a new round of money from the federal government. Including a 600 payment to help get them through this pandemic. But for many, its not going to be enough. According to feeding america, 1 in 6 americans and 1 in 4 children are likely to experience Food Insecurity by the end of the year. I want to turn now to the ceo of feeding texas. Feeding texas represents all the food banks across the Lone Star State help iing to coordinate a the efforts. Thats an increase of 50 over last year. Youre seeing this tragic situation play out every day. This new relief package thats likely to become law. How is it going to help . Well, thank you for having me on the show. I appreciate it. And i want to just say that those numbers you just cited unfrptly are even higher in the state of texas. 1 in 5 families is facing some kind of Food Insecurity and 1 in 3 children. Were grateful for the nutrition provisions in the covid relief bill. I think most importantly it includes a 15 boost in snap benefits. This is the most important hunger fighting program in the country and millions of americans have been relying on it throughout the pandemic. It also includes 400 million in funding for the emergency Food Assistance program. We are facing a significant decrease in funding in that program. Were expecting a 50 decrease and so that additional aid that is going to be voted on today is going to be critically important to helping us meet the need. And i think the big concern is until those additional Food Supplies arrive, what were seeing in our communities, were going to be able it meet that need. We anticipate a 20 million meal gap between the demand were seeing right now in communities across the state of texas and the food that we anticipate having in the next three months. So we are grateful to our elected leaders for include iin the new trigs provisions we included in the bill, but also concerned about how were going meet the need in the coming months. Also concerned is will it last. That its going to take low income americans, many of whom were struggle iing a lot longer than six months to get back on their neat. We saw levels have come back down following the Great Recession of 2008. So it took 12 years for those numbers to come back down. Were anticipating to be in this for the long haul. Were going to be seeing elevated rates for at least a year if not many years to come. You mentioned a 20 million food gap. We have seen these images of lines of hundreds of cars in food banks all over the country. But in texas alone, thousands now relying on food banks, relying on them to feed their families every week. These are people who have is never been to a food bank before. What are you hearing from peo e people . What are they saying . Its a did 20 million meal gap. What we are seeing is a lot of new people, first time users of food banks. Lots of people who were once donors to food banks were volunteers in the food lines. So i think most of all, whats hard eest to measure is just th uncertainty that people are feeling and tasing. And thats a big factor in Food Insecurity and you named it. Its not knowing where your next meal is going to come from. Are you going to put meals on the table and pay your bills. And thats what were seeing and hearing from the people waiting in line for our help. I think equally important a question though is there were 1 in 7 texans struggling with Food Insecurity before the pandemic. Why is it so hard for lowincome americans to make ends meet. I think the pandemic exposed a problem that was there already and made it a lot worse. Thank you for your time. Thank you for all youre doing there on the ground in texas. We appreciate your work. Thank you. I want to turn to political analyst rick tyler. Rick, President Trumps delay in signing the stimulus and relief bill caused chaos over the holidays for millions of americans. I want to ask you the same question. What was the point . Well, there was no point other than to disrupt and express anger and revenge over the republicans in the congress. Particularly mitch mcconnell, who has acknowledged the obvious that Vice President biden is president elect biden. He wanted to cause chaos. In the end, he signed it. Im not sure that the stimulus portion of the bill is actually the real or the big story here. The stimulus bill repurpose d about 429 million from the cares act. So half that money of the 900 million was reallocated or repurposed. And its going to be put to good use. That was the thing. But the thing is whether youre on the verge of homelessness or closing on your second home, youll get the same 600. It wasnt particularly targeted. But the other part of the bill represents something much deeper. Many fiscal conservatives and some republicans actually had hope that donald trump might disrupt washington. Might be able to reform its ways. And in the end, it was a 1. 4 trillion discretionary bill that was exactly the same bill that he sign ed in 2018, which he sad he would never do again. It was rushed through congress. Congress didnt review. They do what they assaults do. Its the brinksmanship. So the message really is despite the thfact that trump has stresd our laws and institutions, our constitution, in the end in what matters in reforming washington spends, donald trump is inconsequential. He actually changed nothing. In the end, trump lost, but washington once again won. To your point, you raise an interesting issue. Mark sanford has talked about this as well. Long before the pandemic started, debts and deficits did not appear to be of major concern to republicans like yourself. How in the world over the next four years are republicans going to once again take up the mantle of debt and deficit reduction. Shamelessly. They have already started doing it. Lind see gra hospital, who will be head of the Budget Committee if the democrats in georgia dont win has already atalked about the fact we have a 27 trillion debt and must do something about it. And hes talking about entitle the reform. All these things need to be done, but theres no credibility on the issue. Im not antigovernment. Im pro Good Government and pro limited government. Theres a functional role for government, but it really is status quo. Think about the rebellion that led the british to brexit. We could argue about the merits of brexit from a policy angle, but we cant forget the majority of them wanted to get out of their relationship with the parliament in brussels because it had overreached. And they got brexit and it did happen and well see how that works out. In the United States, what we got was the status quo. Nothing changed. Washington is still up to its ways. This budget is full of gimmicks. It has 2,000 pages of the 5,600 pages that redefine what spending is so they can get around the selfimposed spending limits that previous congresss put in to look like they were somehow fiscally responsible. So they write all these definitions to retwine what the spending is. So things are now emergency spending. Theres certainly a lot of that. But there are a lot of things that are not emergency spending. And they just busted right through. 153 billion of the 2011 budget control act, which is simply ignore d. So the swamp just won. Trump wasnt an agent of change. Maybe we will get someone who knows how to fix it. But anybody who knows how washington works seems to go along with washington. Its wholly unreasonable to expect people who benefit from a system to decide to change that system. Rick tyler, thank you. Nice christmas tree. Well see you soon.
