The bottom line is candidates will get at best 10 minutes total of talk time. Two twohour debates, we noted. Five segments, for commercial breaks. This is more of a lightning round. Among progress ifs, the base moveon. Org with their new poll out. Bernie sanders. Elizabeth warren close to 38 . Bernie sanders is trailing by 20 points behind. Overall joe biden has the advantage. Ali . Let me go to vaughan hillyard. All the way down thousands of miles to florida where we are glad to see you have made it safe and sound. What stood out to you. We have heard from folks they will be tuning into this debate. They may have opinions on the issues. When it comes to which candidate, thats the big question. We are told on education, health care, war in the middle east, folks had things they wanted us to know and things they said they would be watching this debate to hear the candidates talk about. I want to let you hear from some of the individuals we met along the way. How does the civility question land to your decision then . I want him to shut up, be quiet. Does it make you less inclined to vote for him . Yes. It does. I want her to be able to choose the issues for her own body. This community, this whole organization. What can you do . What can you not do . There were 18 Million People that watched that first democratic debate back in 2015, hallie. Going around the country from the pacific northwest, southwest, the south, here to florida, people are aware this debate is taking place. In their view, this is their opportunity eight months out. To get to know who the candidates are. Elizabeth warren and the other slew of candidates that frankly they dont even know the names of. This is the chance and they want to hear the issues discussed. Hallie. Back to you. Whats the play here for the rnc, from President Trump . Whats your reporting . Well, first, as it starts with the president , he will be departing for the g20 in osaka, japan on wednesday. That means he will be on air force one en route to asia during the first nights debate. The twitter feed may be where he puts out attacks on those who appear to be gaining traction. The frontrunner will be debating then. Vice president mike pence is in miami and will roll out a latinos for trump coalition, prior to the debates. They have been preparing opposition for this debate for months. As they noted to us, thousands of papers, hundreds of hours of videos that they have scrolled through to try to find any contradiction any misstep from some of the democrats tomorrow. Thats what we will be watching from the republican side, hallie. Peter, i believe the president is talking about joe biden taking on the frontrunner at the be date. Heres what he had to say in a new interview just out today. How he doesnt get president obama to endorse him . There has to be some reason hes not endorsing him. He was vice president. They seem to have gone along. How president obama is not endorsing him is a big secret. If you know the answer, please let me know. It could be that president obama knows something. But there is something going on in that head of his. More to come in the next few days, i expect. From florida back to washington and capitol hill. House Democratic Leaders right now are making some lastminute changes to this big border aid package set for a vote today after some members objected to key parts of it. Let me get to Kelly Odonnell who is tracking action there with us with me on set, two reporters you just saw in the interview. Jordan fabian, White House Correspondent for the hill and chief washington correspondent for the hill as well. Kelly, let me start with you on the hill. It seems like there have been real concern about this move that is set to happen later today to potentially advance a package to provide humanitarian aid for migrant aid for kids on the border. One of the big concerns, hallie, is could the president and the administration use a package like this in ways unintended. That is the big worry. There is enormous concern about the welfare of children at the border and those who have been in the custody of the United States. We have seen some deplorable accounts of how they have been taken care of some move now. What we expect today, steny hoyer, the majority leader for democrats, does expect this bill to go to the floor today. And he does expect it to pass. Now, that will still mean there has to be negotiations between the senate and the house to come up with a final package. That is standard business around here. But there are differences. And the differences really do reflect some of the kind of ideas that the two parties have. And you can see that. They want additional money for the department of defense. They want to have congressional notice of full of two days before anybody can go to these facilities and additional funding for i. C. E. Officers. On the house side, just looking at the screen, sit a more full list of options. It includes no funding for the department of defense. It would stop the Trump Administration from reprogramming funds for other purposes. So that gives you a flavor of it, hallie. There will be more negotiations going on. Both parties need money to deal with the crisis at the border. It matters how they get there. Do we know timing on the vote . Do we know when that will be . Kelly odonnell, thank you. You two just interviewed the president. Some on camera, some of it not. I assume you asked about immigration. We didnt talk about this particular bill. We said you delayed these deportation rates by two weeks. Yes. What are you going to do . What type of legislation will be assigned . He spent much of this. And we asked about the conditions in the migrant camps. He said he didnt like to see those particular conditions. He would like to see toothbrushes in the hands of these children. He blamed it all on president obama. He said president obama separated them, and i brought them together. Factcheck on that one, jordan . Of course there were some bad conditions for migrants in the facilities in the obama administration. But the conditions have gone worse under this administration. The president is in control of his administration. If he wants to improve the conditions of these facilities, he could take steps to do that. Important to note while he wants to see the changes in asylum law and puts pressure on democrats with this latest deportation rate delayed threat, it does not take an act of congress to get children soap. Thats right. It was mentioned in the Inspector General report detailing some of the bad conditions of these facilities. . How long did you speak with the president . It was about 45 minutes. One thing that caught my eye is more is getting rolled out today. The president declines to say he has confidence in his fbi director. Boy, this is a significant thing here. I teed it up talking specifically about the spying issue. He declined to say he had confidence in it. He has not been happy with him. He called it wrong. Do you see this as maybe chris wray being on the chopping block . Im not sure if its that far yet. Because he has asked one fbi director. But he is certainly in the dog house. He is one of these aides who hasnt gone in the cross of trump. It is only a matter of time before the situation may worsen. We have showed clips on the show talking about, you know, be asked under testimony when he is sitting in front of members of congress about the things the president has said. And wray disagreeing, being forced to disagree. It was interesting with him. He always had the opportunity. To dive deep and express his criticism. He was muted. He wouldnt say he had confidence in him. He said he disagreed with him. But he cut it off there. You mentioned e. Jean carroll. We will talk about that later on in the show. How would you characterize his demeanor, attitude. He is heading out this week to go to g20 in japan. Does he seem ready . Relaxed . It was more that he relished in attacking her and saying these things, shes not my type. He really seems to be wanting to take a fight to her. But ironically, that elevated that story which wasnt getting a whole lot of attention in the Mainstream Press and injected it into the headlines today. The u. S. Womens National Soccer team and these questions and the issues of pay in equitity. The women not getting paid as much as the men. The president has been on the sidelines. You asked him about it. There i did. I was curious to see especially that they are playing right now. He did not affirm that he thought equal pay should be given to both men and women in the somer teams. We had to look at crowd size and that should determine pay. He must have seen some coverage of it. This has been in the headlines a couple of weeks now. Of course. The women are outearning the men and bringing in more viewers. The president has one of the old wsj copies on his desk that he can get to. More from your interview coming out later today. Appreciate it, guys. Thanks. Awesome. Id rather not. New, the iranian president is out with his first reaction to those tough new u. S. Sanctions on his country. And he is clearly, clearly not happy. Calling the sanctions outrageous and idiotic. Even going so far as to say the white house is afflicted by mental illness. Iran is warning sanctions have permanently closed the door to diplomacy, even as the National Security adviser said that door is wide open. The president has held the door open to real negotiations. All iran needs to do is to walk through that open door. Nbc News Tehran Bureau chief is in the iranian capital. It sounds like the Pressure Campaign the administration has been pushing for is not exactly working to bring iran to the table. Fair . Reporter thats fair to say, hallie. The open door to walk through by john bolton is seen very much as a trapdoor to follow through. Senior figures here have been saying for some time now that offers of talks by the u. S. Are disingenuous and only designed to make iran weaker, to make it a softer target, to eventually attack. And these latest sanctions against the ayatollah, supreme leader, the most powerful man in iran, has been billed in the media by officials as the death of diplomacy. They walked the white house saying President Trump is mentally ill. They called it window dressing. He hasnt left the country since the late 1980s. Things are set to get much more intense. Today the head of irans National Security council said that the europeans were unwilling or unable to protect iran from u. S. Sanctions to put the nuclear deal and as a result iran was going to dramatically ramp up its Nuclear Productions and stray very far away from the terms of the jcpoa. They are planning on doing that july 7th. So as we keep going on, and theres no dialogue between the two countries, things are only set to become a lot more intense. Hallie . That is a scary prospect. Thank you. Here in washington with me. Ana palmer and shawna thomas. Its great to see you both. The u. S. Is hitting a point of initialing returns, right, when it comes to the sanctions . A scholar from iran saying any new measure are incremental and possibly redundant. The iranian economy has become more insular and less interconnected which leaves it paradox kael more resilient to u. S. Restrictions. Where does the u. S. Go from here . The issue with trying to put more sanctions or pressure on iran is that this has to be a joint agreement. It was between multiple countries. Russia in there. European countries in there. You have the United States. The pressure has to come from a lot of different directions. Or its really not going to work. Ana . Yeah. Interesting and the scary thing is were in a dangerous game of chicken. You have trump saying they will go down one avenue. Iran is not folding right now. We were talking this morning, last night saying there is no outcome that is, you know, the path where its going to come to some kind of resolution at this point. And there is the possibility of a military conflict which is ominous. President trump was talking about that in the hilliard interview we addressed earlier. No, he does not think he needs congressional approval for this. I like the idea of keeping congress abreast but i wouldnt have to do that. Nancy pelosi said you must have congressional approval. I disagree. Most people disagree. I like to keep them abreast but he doesnt have to do it legally. He likes to keep them abreast . He has to do that, actually. Im sure congressional leaders, both republican and democrat, will have issue of his concept that he just wants to keep them abreast of International Military actions. In the shortterm, the president has a lot of power. He sure does. Especially when it comes to Foreign Policy in the military. He cant totally do what he wants, but he can push the envelope pretty far. And congress has the power of the purse. They can try to rein him in with that. It takes amount of time with that. We saw war powers sent to his desk. He vetoed that. They dont have the power to overrule. He is the commander in chief. There are some of his allies. As you know, and you especially, anna, who want him to take a more aggressive posture to iran. He is not necessarily alone. I dont think there is a majority of members who want this. This is another issue where he likes to take lateral action because he didnt like to have to go to congress and ask for their permission. We will have you both back later in the show for more. Thats not that unusual, right . Its a key swing state with a pretty good track record while electing president s. The state has voted with every winning candidate since 1996. But if youre a democrat, you first have to get through the primaries. The way to do that with the new reworked primary calendar, a deep dive into deep blue territory. Jacob is live in miami looking into what matters. You spent time out in california and so did plenty of democratic candidates. That is not stopping any time soon, right . Reporter no. They will certainly continue to, hallie. I guarantee you the democrats, although they will be on stage here in miami the next couple of days, they will be speaking to the voters of my home state, the great state of california. 500 delegates are on the line. A quarter of all you would need to win the election. What matters to california voters will matter on the stage. Take a look. There isnt a bigger blue county than los angeles. As candidates figure out what matters here in the 28th congressional district, it could be key to winning the entire nomination. In the 2016 primary here, Hillary Clinton squeaked by Bernie Sanders by just 67 votes out of 138,000 cast. We started in burbank. Hey, congressman. Adam schiff is my congressman, and he has represented the 28th for two decades. It could be a real bellwether in terms of where primaries are going. What do you have to say to the 28th district candidates . They will have to address the changing nature of the economy, how people are going to get health care, retirement security, in this gig economy. Theyre going to have to talk about homelessness, which is a huge issue. To see if schiff was right, we headed further south into the district. And to beat the traffic, we got to the subway. So you work two jobs. Three, actually. Do you need all three to make a good living . Yes. Do you think most of the candidates understand that what it is like to be somebody to work three jobs . Absolutely not. We got off in east hollywood, an kwraeur undergoing rapid development. A lot of the candidates will won to win over your guyss votes. What is the winning message. Somebody who doesnt seem fake for sure. What do you care about . Gay and lesbian rights, transgender rights, homeless rights. I care about housing. There is a large Homeless Population in the area. Yes. As i reported firsthand, Los Angeles County has more People Living on the streets than anywhere else in america. Around 60,000, according to the l. A. County Homeless Services authority. Not far from my house, switched to my favorite way of beating traffic. Now we are a short ride up and over the Los Angeles River across the bridge is the 34th district. 2016 was tight in the 34th too. 99,000 votes cast, sanders beat out clinton by just 4,000 votes. Not far from where you cross that bridge, youll find another one of l. A. s quickly gentrifying neighborhoods, hyland park. Cheers. Jimmy gomez represented the 34th Congress Since 2017. Historic filipino town, korea town. People who live in Million Dollar homes, to people who are struggling to get by. The new hipster coffee shop and restaurant to the Old School Pizzeria or taco place. One issue that is cutting across is housing affordability. They cant afford to stay in their places and end up on the streets. Youre talking homelessness. Thats right. Youre in the middle of investigating the president of the United States every day in d. C. If a 2020 candidate comes to this primary and says i want to talk about affordability rather than impeachment, more people might pay attention. Yeah. I have to travel 60 miles. Because housing isnt available have you voted yet . I will next year. What matters to you. A chance to have a better future. Africanamericans, mexicans, chinese. Everybody does. That sounds like everybody in this district. Thats right. Affordable might be more of a winning message in impeachment. It is in their daily lives, economic in equality are front and center. I would be curious to hear if we hear it on the debate stage. Dollars to doughnuts we will. Jacob, thank you much. Tomorrow the first democratic president ial debate kicks off. Night one elizabeth warren, cory booker, amy klobuchar. Then pete buttigieg, kamala harris, joe biden battling it out. You can see the debate 9 00 tomorrow on msnbc, nbc, and telemundo. It will be a big couple of nights. Back here in washington. President trump is defending himself against the new allegation he sexual assaulting elle magazine columnist e. Jean carroll. Heres the first line out of his mouth when asked about. Shes not my type. The president telling hill tv the assault never happened, saying carroll is totally lying, adding i dont know anything about her. The president said i know nothing about this woman. I know nothing about her. Carroll claims in a new book that President Trump forced himself on her in a dressing room 23 years ago. Hans nichols is over at the white house. Hans, he is out talking about her response. In some ways, it is a familiar pattern. We have an allegation, a denial from the president. In this case hes mixed in a bit of insult as well. We are hearing the refutation of that from e. Jean carroll. Heres what she had to say. He denied all 15 women who came forward. He denies. He turns it around. He threatens. And he attacks. It was against my willings and it hurt, and it was a fight. Reporter now, the president addressing this in that interview last night. Well see if he says anything about it today. The New York Times i should note in reporting this, they talked to two of her friends who said at the time a contemporaneous account that this happened. They are unnamed. According to the New York Times they found two friends that corroborate her story. Which is always an interesting part of these stories. Anna and shawna, the words from the president , not my type. This is not the first time the president has used a defense like that, a defense of that nature to deny accusations of sexual assault. This is a blast back to 2016. Believe me, she would not be my first choice. That, i can tell you. Man. You dont know. That would not be my first choice. That seemed to play well with the president at that rally. There are real questions that plays with the rest and others who dont support it as much. What he has done time and again is deflect. He doesnt want to be talking about this. He pushes it aside and, you know, minimizes whatever the allegation is against him. It is worked for him in the of pa. He has not seen the kind of, you know, other the implications that other politicians off faced when there are allegations like this. I dont know exactly why that is. When it comes to him, he does not have the same kind of issues that any other, you know, republican or democrat that was elected would have to face. I think also part of the issue is that weve heard similar stories before. What carroll describes seems to go above and beyond. It could be considered rape. The issue is because we have heard these things before, people have factored that into how they feel about this president , right . So if you are a woman who last time around, we had the tape that came out and that affected you. You are not going to vote for him anyway next time around. Maybe that is a terrible thing to say about our society. I think we are taking this seriously. But it feels repetitive. The deflection feels repetitive. It is hard to know what to do with it if the president of the United States said i didnt do it. She says i did. If you read her piece, she has the two contemporaneous friends she mentioned in the piece as well. She looked for the video at the department store. Cant find anything. What kind of person is this president . And thats another thing that factors into the actual election in 2020. All said then, what do you think . Any political damage based on your reporting that will end up hurting the president here potentially or no . I think one of the issues with this, too, its very serious allegations. It is the onslaught of information that we are getting and the times that he busts norms, whether its on twitter or in response to different things. I think we just seem to move on really fast in this environment right now. But i do wish that there was a way he could learn how to respond in a way that isnt the thing that you quoted. Shes not my type. That is dismissive. Its dismissive of em with. Even if he is going to say he did not do it, theres has got to be a better way to talk about it, right . Well leave it there on that question. Shawna thomas, ana palmer, thank you. Stick around. We will see you back at the end of the show for sources say the fight over immigrants centering around money. Migrant kids living in filthy and crowded conditions in at least one facility in texas, according to lawyers who visited last week and saw that. That sparked a National Outcry. After the lawyers came out and talked about kids not having access to basic things like soap and toothbrushes. Gabe, what do we know . Hi there, hallie. Good morning. We were at the Border Patrol station not too far from where im standing. We since moved to another Border Patrol station here in el paso. This is an area that immigration advocates tell us where parents and kids are being held. Now, the government has said that their system is overwhelmed. Here on a public sidewalk, they put up a tarp. You can clear through the fence. Tents have been put up. We have seen some children in that facility. Hallie, as you know, access to these facilities is heavily restricted. The last several months we have seen the surge in undocumented migrants coming here. The problem is migrants and children, unaccompanied children are supposed to be here less than 72 hours. Immigration advocates are telling us they are in these types of facilities. Speaking of that facility in clint, texas, you spoke with an attorney, laura, among the advocates, lawyers and interpret terse that went into that facility and described those cramped and chaotic conditions in that facility. Take a listen to how she describes it. There is no access to soap, to toothbrushes. There is a lice infestation. These are the most appalling conditions i have seen in my 12 years of representing children and families detained. Reporter and, hallie, we spoke with another immigration lawyer who worked with siblings 6 and 10 years old that also describe similar conditions at that facility. She called the conditions appalling, hallie. This is something the question will be what will happen to these children. 300 children in that clint facility have since been moved to other facilities. But there are still so many coming across the border every day, hallie. You mentioned something important. Under the law as it stands, 72 hours for unaccompanied minors, kids to stay in facilities before theyre transferred out. What do we know about how much more over the 72hour threshold some of these kids are staying . Reporter thats a very good point, hallie. When we were speaking with Border Patrol last month, they admitted kids needed to stay longer. Some kids were in the clint facility 14 days and they got sick with the flu while they were in there. 14 days when they are only supposed to be there 72 hours. After that, they are sent to other facilities run by the department of health and Human Services and office of refugee resettlement. But before they get to the other facilities, they are staying some facilityings like this one for Border Patrol for days and weeks like this, hallie. Gabe, we will look for your reporting tonight on nbc nightly news. Thank you much for joining us here, my friend. Up next on this show, can you finally see Robert Mueller testifying in front of congress . The answer coming any day now. Lawmakers get ready to subpoena the now former special counsel. Were talking with a leading House Judiciary Committee before that. E Judiciary Committee befoe atth Johnson Johnson is a baby company. Today on capitol hill, 9 11 First Responders are set to meet with senator mitch mcconnell. That is set to happen this afternoon. The majority leader has come under fire for not acting more quickly on the Victim Compensation fund. You probably remember jon stewart making all the headlines this month, ripping mcconnell and others demanding that congress approve this funding permanently. It is set to run out of money next year. We expect to see them later on this afternoon on the senate side. On the other side of the capi l capitol, we are waiting to see whether the house will subpoena Robert Mueller to testify. House intel chair adam schiff says his committee will decide on that this week. So the clock is ticking, even as the House Judiciary Committee is still negotiating with former special counsel. Congressman zoloft. Thank you for being with us. Where is your committee in these negotiations with Robert Mueller . Have you reached an agreement . Whats the status . Well, i cant make an announcement on that. The chairman and the staff are talking to mr. Mueller. We hope to have him before the committee in public session. Having said that, although thats important. What he meant was some of the report, hes not actually a fact witness. He is the author of the report. Were pursuing well as addition documents that the department of justice has. They have released part of the underlying evidence for the second volume which deals with obstruction of justice. Theyve not yet released the redactions from volume two which deals with the russians and their interference, nor have we obtained the underlying documents for volume one dealing with the russian interference. That is very important. I understand that you dont want to get ahead of the chairman and make announcements. So let me ask you in a different way here. Are you yourself optimistic that you will be able to avoid subpoenaing mueller as it stands right now . Well, i dont know. Thats a process question. Let me say this. I have a high level of confident that the mr. Mueller will appear before the judicialary committee in public session. Okay. Thats fair. Let me ask you about this. Your committee reached an agreement with don mcgahns former chief of staff donaldson. Shes important had that she appears many, many times in the mueller report. She took copious notes in key meetings with President Trump. But politico is reporting that theyre expected to assert absolute immunity over her testimony. What is your committees next move . Well, the idea that theres absolute immunity is a very bizarre assertion that is not based in any court case or any part of the constitution. Its a its not the law. And the president has asserted that relative to ms. Hicks which she came before us last week. Mr. Mcgahn. So well have to go to court on this. As to ms. Donaldson, she is in shes pregnant, in her third try midwest, he she cant fly. So weve accommodated that, as we should, to have her provide written answers and an agreement to appear before us after she gives zblirth your colleague congressman jim mines is the lightest democrat to call for an impeachment. That is something youve been skeptical about. This morning, this is something i want to get to you. The congressman was asked why now . What changed. Here he is. There was a week, two weeks ago when an Inspector General came out with an unprecedented recommendation that Kellyanne Conway had clearly broken the law and that she should be removed from office and the president said awe, heck, that doesnt matter. It has nothing to do with his credibility or legitimacy as a president basically says screw you to congress. And now theyre block her from testifying. I will ask you, does the conway situation change your calculation at all . Well, i think its improper, but the question is, does a hatch act violation constitute a high crime and misdemeanor . And if you read the history and the standards, i would developture thventure that the answer to that is no. We have a job before us, the Judiciary Committee, and were doing that job. We are endeavoring to interview fact witnesses. Were endeavoring to review the actual documents, the facts that we need to do. Its a slog, but thats what we have to do to proceed. And to jump ahead to the end is impossible. Before i let you go, let me s ask you about another issue happening today in the house. That vote on the border aid package. There are some democrats in your caucus like congressman alexandria ocasiocortez who said im not interested in make sure caged kids from have warm burrito easy, im making sure theyre not caged in the first place. Are you confident that this humanitarian aid package will pass today . Well, i believe it will. Certainly theres a lot of distrust that the president has earned not only in congress, but among the american people. But the bill is crafted in such a way that the money cannot be moved around for any other purpose.
