President trump, who within the last hour or so is announcing he will be a no show instead hold a rally. Im not going to waste my time on a virtual debate. Now we dont really know whats going to happen with miami next week, and that debate. We do know we have new reaction coming in from joe biden, there he is, within the last couple of minutes. Our team is with him as he takes off for a Campaign Swing out west. We dont know what the president s going to do. He changes his mind every second. Remember, this whole debate move was meant to keep people safe, considering President Trump has covid but . A new interview this morning he says hes cured, just one of the questionable medical claims hes making as he makes no reference to the two dozen plus people affiliated with or connected to his white house or campaign who have tested positive. We sort out fact from fantasy with a guest who used to run the nations Top Public Health agency. Good morning, im Hallie Jackson and it has been a morning. Im here in washington along with carol lee outside the white house, msnbcs mike memoli in Salt Lake City and Michael Steele, along with former cdc director and president and ceo of resolve to save lives, dr. Tom frieden. Thanks for being here all of you. Carol over the course of 55 minutes the president seemed to have a lot to get off his chest, includes dropping out apparently of next weeks debate. For now, hallie, the president saying that the debate in a virtual format is just not worth his time. He even suggested in this interview with fox business that that sort of format might not allow him to dominate, to interrupt in the way that we saw him do in the first debate. Take a listen to what he had to say. No, im not going to waste my time on a virtual debate. Thats not what debatings all about. You sit behind a computer and do a debate, they cut you off. Theyre trying to protect biden. Everybody is. Now this is a decision that the commission of president ial debates made on its own. It did not consult the campaigns about this. They informed the campaigns before making that announcement publicly but the campaigns didnt have a choice in this and the president is saying now that instead of going to this debate for now this 66 Million People plus watching, remains to see if hell change his mind. Thats right. Instead hell hold a rally. Hallie . Carol, good point. This president reversed course on Different Things before. Who know what well hear in four days. At the moment, this is where things stand. Michael steele, what do you make of the president saying this . Its typical trump. You know, its a format that doesnt allow him to do what he likes doing best. They cut him off and he doesnt want to be cut off. The idea theyre trying to protect biden, dude, theyre trying to protect themselves from you. Youre infected with covid19 and youre not cured. Stop it. I mean, its just one of these things that is so frustrating for the larger public consumption, because it creates this false impression that somehow this man got covid19 on wednesday and was cured of it by monday, and you know, im back to business as usual. When everyone knows thats not the narrative. When you put it into a situation where you have this big public event, Everyone Needs to be cautious. They need to take the precautions and the president continues to show his disregard for those very precautions. So this is not going to go well with the American Voters right now. They are just tired of watching this opportunity to protect themselves, get turned on its head, because the president is selfindulge selfindulgent. Mike, talk about this idea of the president claiming that the debate is trying to protect joe biden as Michael Steele points out. The president was diagnosed with covid on friday, so far as we know from what his doctor said. We saw biden on the tarmac a couple of minutes ago. What are you hearing from sources about whats going to happen come next week . Reporter the decision by the Debate Commission was a surprise to the campaign. Bidens team of officials working with the Debate Commission spent most of this week dealing with plexiglass for the Vice President ial debate last night. They were getting ready to finally have the conversations with the Debate Commission about the format, the location, the safety protocols that would be involved in a miami debate town hall format, when this decision came in. Kate bedingfield put out a statement saying that joe biden looked forward to speaking directly with the American People and comparing his vision for you nighting the country and Building Back better against the president s failed response to the coronavirus. Another Campaign Official more bluntly after the president indicated he wouldnt participate, one campaign is winning and the other is whining. Joe biden himself had an early flight today to come out west where hell join senator Kamala Harris. We had a chance to hear his reaction to the president s response. Check it out. We dont know what the president is going to do. He changes his mind every second. For me to comment on that now would be irresponsible. I think if im going to follow the commission recommendation, if he goes off and going to have a rally, ill, i dont know what ill do. Reporter trump is saying he will do a rally instead. Biden was asked if he might do the same or participate is he low. A few days ago he did a solo town hall in miami with lester holt. Biden also in that exchange praised senator Kamala Harris for her performance on the debate stage last night saying she was very president ial and theyll be joining each other today on the campaign trail for the First Time Since the convention, campaigning in that key battleground state of arizona. Mike, that is the thing we thought we would be talking to but this morning, there in salt lake. We have a lot of threads to follow up on the Vice President ial debate but here comes donald trump within several hourds s of that debate shifting the narrative after the Commission Said this would be virtual. Michael steele, carol referenced something that is important. Millions and millions of people watch the debates and the president s rallies do not get those kinds of things. Nightly newscast do not get the numbers that debates get. Is this is it a mistake for him and why does it matter hes deciding not to participate . It is a mistake. Its not just about where the polls are right at this moment. Its also about how you keep your base engaged, how you keep voters looking and listening at your campaign and what youre doing. So there is a method to that particular kind of madness, and we like to push off these debates as no one is really watching, they fall off after the second debate, et cetera, but youre right, hallie, there may be a falloff after the first debate but its still millions of people that you otherwise would not be able to touch, and given the fact that you still have this narrow group of voters who are still trying to make up their mind as weve shown in interviews on our air, you want to talk to them. So it does matter, having these debates at this particular time, for his campaign. Joe biden is flexible. Can he afford to be flexible, because the numbers are good for him. If youre trump, you want to engage and its unfortunate that he doesnt seem to get that part of it, because hes much more selfconsumed with how hes going to be able to control and dominate the conversation and this medium that theyre suggesting, you know, virtual debate doesnt allow him to do that, and voters take away from that, too and so suddenly the narrative becomes well youre not really interested in talking to us anymore because you cant show yourself off instead of telling us why you need a second term. Michael steele, mike memoli, carol lee, thank you. Dr. Frieden is joining us here. Im going to play something the president said about being contagious. Let me stick on the topic of the rally the president wants to hold. The Campaign Manager said in a statement this morning President Trump ahead of that debate will have tested negative multiple times. How do they know that . How will the campaign know at this moment today as we sit thursday that next week the president will have had multiple negative tests . First off, we dont know when his last negative test was, and thats something that really would be very helpful to understand to understand the spread of covid within the white house. This is a cluster in the white house with many people infected and undoubtedly more people to be infected. What weve seen is a disregard for the basic principles of keeping yourself and other people around you safe, and because of that, we have a cluster. In a different world with a competentent white house we would have had no cluster and if there was a cluster, rapidly identified, rapidly stopped and explaining to the country, this is how you stop the spread of covid. This is how we can get our jobs or economy back. This is how we can save tens of thousands of lives. The president also in this interview less than a week after his positive diagnosis said he didnt feel contagious. I want to play this for you and i want to you explain to all of us lay people how that can be the case. I dont think im contagious at all. And remember this, when you catch it, you get better and then youre immune. As soon as everything goes away for me, you are immune. Put that into context, doctor. Is he correct . How can you be not contagious . Is it possible less than a week after as far as we know coming down with his first symptoms . Theres science and theres Wishful Thinking. Science tells us that it really is usually about ten days after someone is first diagnosed, until theyre reliably noninfectious. Testing is not 100 . If we have learned anything from the white house cluster is that you cannot rely on testing to replace safety measures. This is how they got into this mess. Tests can be falsely negative. They can be negative in the morning and positive in the afternoon, and actually they can be falsely positive also in terms of pcr, or sensitive tests in someone who is sick. Generally we say ten days is generally enough. Remember the president has gotten really unusual treatment experimental treatment four of them, oxygen, regeneron, monoclonal antibodies, remdesivir and dexamethasone. Thats evidence to suggest it may work and how long youre infectious, maybe it shortens it, lengthens is. Science says we look at that. Also the idea of immunity just to be clear, there is evidence that some people who have had covid may have some level of immunity to it, but thats a theory. We dont know if thats the case. We dont know if people are truly protected. So we have to separate Wishful Thinking from science. Two more quick questions for you. You talked about the drugs that the president is on. He has said that he doesnt think that you really need drugs to recover from covid. He obviously had a lot of them and talked about regeneron specifically calling it a cure, not a therapeutic. Is it a cure . We dont know. Thats what science is. We hope it will be really effective at reducing the risk that people will die, but in terms of a cure like penicillin for a sensitive infection that gets totally better, that would be very unusual. We do hope, it is promising, and ive said this before the president got it, that it would be effective. As far as contact tracing, this is the thing that you know extremely well. You understand how these things work. The president suggested referenced that event in the rose garden where announced his Supreme Court nominee a week plus ago, last saturday but referenced a couple of times this event sunday in the white house with gold star families, suggesting or perhaps implying that that may have had something to do with it. How can the white house pinpoint where the source of the covid sort of infections started and do you think theyre able to do that functionally . Well, i was stunned yesterday. There was a statement from the white house that it was unknowable what the source of this infection was. Its only unknowable if you dont want to find out. Saying you cant find out is like saying theres been a murder, we may not solve it so were not going to investigate it. By figuring out the exact time course who got infected when, you can figure out where it occurred, and by doing some fancier testing, dna or rna fingerprinting of the different viruses, you can confirm that. So its possible to find and stop the source of an outbreak and its possible to stop it from spreading further with contact tracing, quarantine and isolation. Those are the basic principles, in addition to wearing mask answer watching your distance and washing your hands that will allow to us get ahead of this virus and not allow it to keep having the upper hand. Dr. Tom frieden with the important reality check, thank you for being back on the show. We have much more to get to on a very busy thursday morning. Next up, congressman andy kim, a member of the Coronavirus Crisis subcommittee on where things stand for relief for millions of americans plus well put a face to those americans hurting right now from washingtons failure to get to a deal. Meet one couple laid off, worried what they do for their three kids. Did anything the Vice President ial candidates say last night move the need well undecided voters . I would have liked a more concrete plan on what they want to do with the covid19. Weve got to share that new update on the economic emergency happening in the country. Another 840,000 americans are filing for unemployment last week, that is worse than what economists were expecting as Big Companies Like Airlines and movie theaters are just starting new rounds of layoffs. Speaking of those airline companies, House Speaker nancy pelosi is set to speak there on capitol hill in just about 30 minutes from now. Shes going to be talking potentially where relief talks with secretary steven mnuchin. The president earlier said this about his new focus and new strategy. Were talking about airlines and were talking about a bigger deal than airlines. Were talking about a deal with 1,200 per person, talking about other things. But its not anybodys fault, they were trying to get things and we were trying to get things and it wasnt going anywhere. I shut it down. I dont want to play games and then we reopened. Joining me now democratic congressman andy kim of new jersey, a member of the select subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. Thank you for being with us this morning. Thank you for having me. So Speaker Pelosi has said her office at least that the last two talks with secretary mnuchin focused on the potential for a standalone narrow bill on Airline Relief. How optimistic are you on a potential deal on that . Im hoping that we can get a deal on the Airline Relief but it needs to be a bigger focus as well going forward. We have Small Businesses in my district that are struggling, and theyre not sure theyre going to be able to make it the next couple weeks, next couple months. We have schools that need additional funding. We need a lot more going forward. The president s narrow focus here, the fact that he even shut down the negotiations to start with is not meeting the moment right now. You would be willing to consider a more narrow deal on something Like Airlines, correct . I am prepared to have a compromise bill for these negotiations that we pass a compromised version of the h. E. R. O. E. S. Act just last week. I am prepared to support our airlines but we cant stop there, and the president saying thats enough, thats calling it games, right now people in my district are under a tremendous amount of strain. They dont have the ability to kick the can down the road a couple weeks like the president is suggesting. We need to have support now. You obviously as we mentioned sit on that coronavirus subcommittee on capitol hill. Theres a couple of many of coronavirus headlines coming out of the white house. One of them is new out of the Atlanta Journal constitution which says that mark meadows hosted his daughters wedding in atlanta in may, 70 guests, the state had a ban in place on gatherings of more than ten people. Nbc news has not confirmed the wedding or reviewed photos of the event. What do you make of this . What i make of that, its consistent with what i continue to see from the white house. They are not taking this pandemic seriously. I had hoped that that would change after the president s diagnosis and others that have contracted this virus. We all continue to wish them well and be able to recover from this but we had hoped that that would urge them to take this with a seriousness that it needs and deserves. In my district were concerned about a second wave of the virus. Were seeing numbers back up here in new jersey, in an alarming way. We need to make sure we are all hands on deck here and focused on this virus with the seriousness and urgency it deserves. So against the backdrop of the seriousness and urgency, how do you read the president s remarks this morning, downplaying the risks of the virus saying when you catch it, you get better basically . Its ridiculous, and its so antithetical to what we need in terms of leadership right now and thats what i find so distressing and alarming that seven months into the pandemic, coming upon the seventh month mark of this, we still see him saying this is not dangerous, that its not serious, and thats a huge problem. Not everybody has access to the kind of medical care he had, to have testing around the clock, to have an army of doctors. He needs to see this through our eyes, through the eyes of the people of my district, and the American People and see what its like to walk in their shoes during a pandemic when theyre down on their luck, they dont have enough money to pay the rent, dont know how to get tested. These are the problems that the American People are facing, not just through the lens of what this pandemic looks from the white house. Before i let you go, one of the other big headlines, President Trump saying he will not participate in next weeks debate virtual debate with former Vice President joe biden. The debates a highly watched event typically. Your assessment on that . Is that good or bad for the American People . Its not about what he wants. Its about what the American People want and the American People want is to learn about the candidates, what kind of vision for america that they have and the fact that he continuously just makes it about himself again shows the lack of seriousness in which hes addressing this, but also is very clear that he wants, he is just not interested in conveying that message, not trying to convey to the American People who his vision is because right now he doesnt have one especially when it comes to a strategy with regards to this pandemic. Congressman andy kim, thank you very much for joining us this morning. We appreciate your time. Straight ahead here, another reality economic, a fact check on the vp candidates after last nights showdown, what they said and didnt say and what voters thought about it all. Plus talking with former obama Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett about the debate and the Coronavirus Crisis in the white house. Knowing who we are is hard. Its hard. Eliminate who you are not first, and youre going to find yourself where you need to be. The race is never over. The journey has no port. The adventure never ends, because we are always on the way. I remember herwho was because she had a bracelet that had the names of her children. She asked me, doctor, am i going to be okay . and i could not give her the answer that i wanted to give her. There is no excuse for why we dont have this under control at this point. Joe biden listens to medical experts. He actually has a plan that does the things that we should have been doing many months ago. And joe biden is not going to let his ego get in the way of fighting the disease. The American People have witnessed what is the greatest failure of any president ial administration in the history of our country. They knew and they covered it up. The president said it was a hoax. They minimized the seriousness of it. Quite frankly, when i look at their plan that talks about advancing testing, creating new ppe, developing a vaccine, it looks a little bit like plagiarism, which is something joe biden knows a little bit about. We all thought wed be talking about this debate, instead its the president ial debate taking center stage but there were interesting moments and important moments to make about the first and only faceoff between Vice President mike pence and senator Kamala Harris. Sure no, where near as chaotic as the faceoff by the top of the ticket last week, still contentious. Notably more substantive, too, still we dont know if its moving the needle with voters or if as the New York Times puts it, its a news cycle or a president ial tweet away from being forgotten. We should have updated that, it is a news cycle from nearly being under the radar. Mark murray and Priscilla Thompson n gwinnett county, georgia. Mark, the most revealing policy questions were the ones not answered. For example mike pence when it came to Climate Change. Do you believe that Climate Change poses an existential threat . As i said, susan, climate is changing. Well follow the science, but once again, senator harris is denying the fact that theyre going to raise taxes. Of course on climate, the science is already quite clear, the human cause is a contribution. Mark, what else are we learning from what we didnt answer and one of the most notable nonanswers from both on the question of succession. Talk about that a bit. Yes, they were asked what ends up happening if joe biden or President Trump ends up getting sick . The other question for Vice President mike pence that had to do with Health Records and transparency when it came to President Trumps health. Abortion, on what indiana would do if roe versus wade is struck down and if joe biden wins the election and President Trump contests it, what role would mike pence play . He ducked all of those questions. For Kamala Harris, she decided to side step a question when it came to the Green New Deal what the bidenharrarris stance on t, their climate plans and many time refused to answer about Court Packing if Amy Coney Barrett is put on the Supreme Court will they add more Supreme Court justices to the bench and i think we have some sound of that. Take a listen. Voting right now theyd like to know if you and joe biden are going to pack the Supreme Court if you dont get your way in this nomination. Lets talk about packing. Come on. Nonanswer, joe biden gave a nonanswer. Im trying toence ayou now. People deserve a straight answer. If you havent figured it out the straight answer is they are going to pack the Supreme Court if they somehow bwin this election. And hallie, so the answers that we end up hearing from last night were really interesting but maybe most interesting of all were the nonanswers, including those that might end up revealing the liabilities and certainly the issues that the two campaigns dont want to talk about. Another big policy issue, mark, came down on health care, something the Biden Campaign in particular trying to focus on. Watch. President trump and i have a plan to improve health care and protect preexisting conditions. If you have heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, theyre coming for you. If you love someone who has a preexisting condition not true. Theyre coming for you. Thank you, senator harris. Mark, we know the Vice President ial debates rarely have a huge impact on voters, right, but we also know that health care does actually move voters. Weve seen that historically. How do you think that exchange is going to play . This is one of the big attack lines from democrats and really important fact check, hallie, pencetrump ticket does not have a plan. President trump talked about an executive order or action on protecting those with preexisting conditions but thats not a plan and they have a lawsuit before the Supreme Court that would invalidate obamacare. On those facts its important for everyone to know. Priscilla, we talk about voters, you are in that key county there. What are you hearing from folks youre talking to . Reporter hallie, before the debate, many of these voters told me they wanted to hear clear, concise arguments to present those contrasts and they wanted to see a respectful debate, and im actually here with one of the voters that i watched the debate with last night, hariette is someone who voted for both democrats and republicans in the past, and you told me yesterday that you wanted to, you were concerned that senator harris may be too far left and you wanted to see if she would find middle ground. Do you feel like she did that last night . Did this debate move the needle for you at all . Yes, shes very neutral, for me doesnt present it as very left so she addressed a lot of things right to the point, and the way how she presented it, you can see the sparkling in her eyes, and she presented so well, and so firm, and i have a lot of confidence in her, that she can handle it, if she were to stand up as president. Were learning the next president ial debate is expected to be a virtual one. President trump has said that he will not participate in that. Does that surprise you at all . And are you concerned that you may not have another opportunity to see biden and trump go head to head before you cast your vote . I actually already decided. I already decided myself, but for a lot of people i know, they already, that is already enough for them to make decision so the way how president is, his decision is just another proof what kind of person he is. Reporter thank you, harriet. Hallie, thats what ive heard from Trump Supporters and biden supporters saying it really doesnt matter if there is another debate. Many of them have already made up their minds. Hallie . Its interesting, pri sill laand mark, thanks. Valerie jarrett served in the Obama White House as a Senior Adviser to the president. Thanks for being on the show. My pleasure, hallie. How are you this morning . Hanging in. Its been a morning. Lets talk about it. We saw history being made on that Vice President ial debate stage last night with senator harris there, woman of color, the first black, first asianwoman on the National Ticket like this. President trump after his Vice President was magnanimous called her a monster twice, called her unlikeable. How do you see that die namm ick . I think thats a mistake. I think she knocked it out of the ball park last night, took complicated issues and broke them down through the lens of how they will affect the lives of americans from the covid19 to the impact of repealing the Affordable Care act, the riff about theyre coming for you. People sitting at home could see the authenticity, the passion, the commitment, and the qualifications that she has to serve and so for President Trump to attack her in ways that are consistent with the double standard that weve seen for too long how women in power are treated as theyre running for office, i dont think will resonate around the country. One thing, it will certainly not resonate with women. I think Vice President pence although he was not as bad as President Trump, who forced me to scream at the television during the last debate, he did keep interrupting both senator harris and susan page in a way that was disrespectful. He didnt answer the questions. He didnt play by the ground rules who were put before him and the campaign agreed to. All of which i think doesnt play well with the American People. Actually on the interruptions our team tracking the debate found the Vice President interrupted senator harris 16 times, almost double her night of interruptions. I want to ask you about Something Else as the president is talking about your former boss this morning, i covered the campaign trail, i covered the white house for nbc news, i heard then candidate trump all the time say about Hillary Clinton lock her up. He is now calling for the indictment of two people, one of whom is his now current democratic opponent as he is currently the president. Here is what he said this morning. These people should be indicted. This was the greatest political crime in the history of our country, and that includes obama and it includes biden. How striking is it to you, valerie, that the president of the United States is now calling for this, or do you think americans have become to a degree perhaps numb to this kind of rhetoric . I think its a strategy to try to distract the American People from the abysmal failure of his efforts to contain the covid19. Thats what families around our country are thinking about, the 211,000 people who died, their families and friends, the people millions of people who lost their jobs. The parents who are right now if they have a job at home trying to decide if its safe to send their children to school, whether theyre in preschool or college or whether theyre trying to home school them at home. The challenges that the American People are facing are front and center, and they rest squarely on the shoulders of President Trump. This happened on his watch and hes in court right now in the midst of a Global Pandemic trying to repeal the Affordable Care act and the nonsense to have a protective order to protect patients with preexisting conditions is preposterous. American people know if they lose their health care under the constitution and Supreme Court theyll lose important benefits when they need them most and in the ten years since the Affordable Health care act was passed not once have the republicans come up with a viable alternative so i think thats where the American People are, thats what theyre focusing on and President Trumps attempt to deflect it by criticizing the former president , it just doesnt ring true and i dont think its going to work. I think its a flawed strategy. You mentioned the coronavirus virus crisis. You worked in the white house for eight years under president obama. In the west wing connected to the administration, connected broadly to the president there are some 26 infections people who tested positive for covid including the head of the White House Security office there. Your reaction to this news and does the white house need to be doing more when it comes to notifying people and communicating with the staffers who are actually working in the building . Its not surprising but it is appalling. Ill tell you, when i saw him doing that joy ride the secret service putting themselves in harms way, now hes jeopardizing them own their families. I saw him strip the mask off and walk into the residence, knowing that his staff are in there, we should not be surprised but what a callous disregard for the lives of other people, and for that, i think the American People are going to hold him accountable. Valerie jarrett, thank you for joining us this morning to talk about the headlines today. Youre welcome. Thats after first the president pulling out of talks with congress saying any deal would have to wait until after the election. Then he was backtracking a bit saying he might approve or back piecemeal smaller deals. House democrats have in the past brushed some of those off, all of this back and forth while tens of thousands of airline employees are losing their jobs, many more expected to be furloughed. The good news, republicans and democrats reconsidering a standalone Airline Relief bill but in the meantime, the lives and Bank Accounts of all the americans are hanging in the balance. Joining me are two of those people, Brittany Riley and peter golumbusky, furloughed from their jobs at flight attendants. Brittany and peter, is great to see you this morning. Good morning. Good morning. Thanks for having us. Good morning. So brittany, tell me a little bit about what this last week has been like for you, and you and your familys story. Its been a little bit of a whirlwind rhonestly. We knew this day was coming for us and we were furloughed the eve of our wedding. We thought congress was going to be able to burn an extension through. Theyve had well enough time to do so and here we are, day eight, no paychecks, no support, no idea of what our future is going to hold. Peter, this impacted your life in a serious way. You moved back in with family members and you have three kids. What is your message to congress about what you need from them . Need them to take action. We cant keep doing this back and forth. We need answers. We need to put aside our differences and think about the American Public and take care of each other. Brittany, youve been checking your phone trying to keep one the news. Youve been engaged in this and we heard word secretary mnuchin and nancy pelosi would be talking about a standalone Airline Relief bill. Can you talk about what goes through your mind as you follow the tweets and the statements and Everything Else . Exhausting. I cant put my mind to rest. This is my familys, you know, survival. My paycheck is gone. We have no jobs. Its not just our family, its hundreds of thousands of Airline Workers on the line begging for some kind of support and some action, and some immediate action and thats just not happening. So ive been tweeting. Ive been following politics more than i think i ever had and its just disheartening. Its really a stressful time for us, so its not been easy on our mental health, and im sure its not easy for a lot of American People right now. The congress is really just failing us and its really sad to see. Peter, what do you say to those who say well, the Airline Industries just want a bailout here, thats what this is about. How do you respond to that . Just want to say its not a bailout. Its an extension for the Payroll Support Program and i think because were a stronger force that we can drive more power through congress and say this is for the American Public. People can ride on and we can get a deal done. We have that power in order to take care of the American Public, so this is what were doing, what we can, trying to make it more perfectly. Were not a company. Were a mom and a dad, were a husband and a wife and theres millions of americans that are just like us in the same situation. Doesnt matter who we work for or what we did in the past. Were all in this together. Brittany, were showing pictures of you and peter and your beautiful family. Talk about what this is like for you, your kids, both mom and dad furloughed and facing so much uncertainty down the road. Its just heartbreaking, honestly. You know, our kids rely on us and we have no answers for them. My son loves going on airplanes and he loves seeing me in my uniform, and to not even have an answer for him as to why mommy is not going to work and why we cant eat out and we cant do things that we normally would be doing is heartbreaking as a parent. Weve dug into our savings and we didnt want to have to do that, but this is where were at. We are getting no support from the people that are running this country, and it is just devastating. I can imagine. Brittany riley and peter golemiewski thank you for being with us. You hope in washington hear what you have to say. Thank you again. This happened last year long before his diagnosis with the coronavirus. Our Courtney Kube with us. Hipaa says doctors you cant spread a persons personal medical information. Why did the president go the extra step of requesting an nda . We spoke with a medical ethicist. Apparently its not uncommon for celebrities, wealthy Business People to ask for these ndas, despite the fact, as you mentioned, hallie, that hipaa restricts physicians from releasing any personal med kag information about a patient unless its to another doctor treating that patient or to someone who is willing them. But many wealthy people, according to this medical ethicist, they do this as an additional layer. What carol lee, my colleague and i found out, is during this secretive visit to walter reed last november, the president required the physicians and nonmedical staff there to sign a nondisclosure agreement. In fact, when several of them declined to sign it, they were removed from his team, the people who were treating the president at that time. It just opens up another layer of confusion about that entire visit. Im sure you remember it. You covered it extensively, hallie, where the president made a surprise visit there on a weekend. Of course, stephanie grisham, the press secretary at the time, said it was to complete some of his annual physical. Generally were given a headsup before the president makes that kind of a visit. It adds another layer here. What i can tell you is the experts who we spoke to about this said there is an nda is really redundant. Its not illegal. The president can ask for it. But theres really no need for it, hallie. Courtney kube, thank you for that. Tell the boys we say hi as youre working from home. We appreciate that.
