Sent sense of security. Marco made the choice to go the direction of the major donors to support amnesty. This is the lie that teds campaign is built on. We should have a path to legal status for the 12 Million People that are here illegally. Securing our borders is not antiimmigrant. If you guys ask one more mean question i may have to leave the stage. I guess impart of the establishment because barbara bush is my month. The days for the clintons in Public Housing are over. Republicans want at it last night over immigration, terrorism, Hillary Clinton and a whole lot more, but even though he skipped the debate donald trump still dominated the night and now voters in iowa get one last weekend to think it all over before mondays caucus. Lets get to Peter Alexander, kristen we will ter, Steve Kornacki, and bill karins. Lets start with our team out on the trial. Peter and kristen in iowa, carry in New Hampshire. You were waiting for trump to begin a rally. What is tare they saying about decision to script the debate . They are confident they made the decision in part because last night kurnd into a three screen night. Usually its people watching the television and with their cell phones or computers doing google back and forth as it goes on. It was a threescreen night because you had the cellphone or computer and two channels could bounce back and forth from. During the debate or flipping over to watch donald trump. It appears the early numbers indicate that this debate was the Second Lowest watched debate of somewhere between 11 to 13 Million Viewers, compare that to the highest rated debate back in august which was 24 Million Viewers. Donald trump during his rally for the veterans says that he raised more than 5 million and while during the debate his name was only mentioned seven times, during his rally he took a moment to talk about jeb bush. This is what he had to say. You look at a guy like jeb bush, he has taken low energy. He has taken 120 extremely low. I shouldnt say, hes debating right now, maybe hes doing great. Hes probably looking for me. Hes saying, has anyone seen trump . Where is trump . Where is he . Where is he . Reporter so while it was an event to raise money according to donald trump to raise money for veterans, it was also very much a political event, as is the case right here. He will be here in about an hour. This is a little bit of a surprise, you can see that there are some empty seats here, granted its 10 00 in the morning, its during a workday, but not the typical kind of standing room only, people being turned away at a donald trump event. I can show you outside this morning in the cold there were still a very long of people and many of those who are here who were standing in line are veterans or retirees and those that i spoke to say that they are solidly behind Donald Trumps decision to boycott the debate. Well hear what donald trump has so say in about an hour. Kerry, thanks. Peter, was anyone on the stage able to capitalize in a debate without trump . The person who was hoping to best capitalize of course was ted cruz. He is number two in the polls, but quickly became the number one target on that stage. Look at this, you will get a kick out of this, this is the headline, this is what iowans are waking up to this morning, it reads, rough night for cruz. Clearly he had a tough experience when all the fire was turned on him, one of the reasons that donald trump wasnt there is that he didnt have to be that target last night. But it did provide an opportunity for others, including jeb bush and marco rubio to try to make their case, but the two men both from florida got into a Good Exchange on the topic of immigration after an interesting montage was played that showed marco rubio in the past vowing that he would fight amnesty and of course ultimately supporting the gang of eight immigration bill. Take a listen. When you led the charge with the gang of eight i supported it because you asked me to and you ask people to support, you shouldnt cut and run, you should stick with it and thats exactly what happened, he cut and run and thats a tragedy. I wrote a book about this called immigration wars, you can get it on 2. 99 on amazon. Its not a best seller. You can get it, its affordable for everybody. We should have a path to legal status for the 12 Million People that are people illegally. Interestingly that jeb mentions the book, that is the book where you changed your position on immigration because you used to support a path to citizenship. So did you. In the book so marco rubio of course there you saw found himself on the defensive his campaign has been trying to get the twitt twitter moek joe mentum trending right now and he has been growing. He has been moving up from third, as far away from ted cruz in second as ted cruz is from donald trump. It will be interesting to see what happens to marco rubio and what we see on a caucus night. He is a candidate that a lot of people believe he has the potential to be the antitrump candidate going forward. Also interesting to see the emergence somewhat in the debate of jeb bush, someone who trump is, you know, recently as last night calls low energy and i think thats affected him, certainly in the peoples eyes. Did he capitalize on the fact that trump wasnt there and on immigration, you know, he has policies. Reporter i think a lot of people will say that hes one of the people that best benefited by trumps absence last night. He opened up with a oneliner that he could deliver finally unchallenged about donald trump, joking about how he finds donald trump to be a teddy bear and the two have gotten along well. He got a laugh from the iowa crowd when he made that point right now. So he a guy who likes to cast himself as a proven leader with a proven record from his years of service in florida, a person who has had detailed plans throughout, really performed well and looked much more comfortable without the sort of bully of donald trump as it were on stage last night as one person described it its like that kid going out to school when their bully had finally been expelled, he felt a lot more like himself it appeared, but its unclear exactly how much he will benefit from what was a Strong Performance last night. Hes not even going to be here in iowa for caucus night. The campaign acknowledges they dont expect to do all that well in this state, theyre putting a lot more chips on the deck in New Hampshire, but in New Hampshire our new poll shows trump is at 31 , jeb bush trailing way behind at 8. Thank you, peter. Lets go to Kristen Welker who is covering the democrats for us this morning in nare final push in iowa. Kristen, how is that looking . Reporter well, it is a tough fight to the finish here in iowa, thats for sure, jose. What were seeing is the rhetoric really ramp up in these final days leading up to the caucus. Bernie sanders the underdog has been gaining momentum, gaining ground in the polls. He had vowed that he wasnt going to go negative in this campaign, but were seeing him really walk right up to that line, he released this ad, for example, slamming Hillary Clinton for her close ties to wall street and he is also make taking a much sharper tone, attacking her, trying to paint her as a flipflopper. Interestingly, secretary clinton trying to showcase her softer side and letting her top surrogate, former president bill clinton, her husband, defend her in the strongest terms. Take a listen to some of the heated rhetoric from the trail yesterday. It is great to be against the war after you vote for the war. It is great to be for gay rights after you insult the entire Gay Community by supporting doma. It is great to finally kicking and screaming come out against the tpp, but where were you on all of the other trade agreements . What all of this is about, what its about, is that what leadership means is not simply following the majority. Everything she ever touched she made better. And so next time you hear somebody say shes part of the establishment, and planned parenthood and Human Rights Campaign fund are, too, because they support her because of what shes done, you ought to think about that. You ought to think about how she was the only candidate running to went to wall street before the crash. Reporter and together a sense of just how close this race is, jose, lets take a look at the past five polls. Three of them show secretary clinton with a small lead, two of them show senator Bernie Sanders with a small lead. So ultimately on monday this is all going to come down to turnout. I have visited the Campaign Head quarters of both campaigns, they are in high gear trying to make sure people turn and caucus. A lot of focus in the Bernie Sanders campaign those young caucus goers, they want to make sure they do turn out. This final result in iowa could be determined by those younger caucus goers. Lester holt will have an interview with Hillary Clinton tonight on nbc nightly news. Thank you very much. Im here with Steve Kornacki. I want to touch on the democrats and republicans, but lets start with the republicans, the debate last night, Peter Alexander was showing us the headline in the local paper saying not a good night for cruz. That is a damning headline for ted cruz, thats the major newspaper in that state, we are three days away from this thing and theyre telling iowa cruz went into the debate last night he was already starting to lose momentum. He had the lead a month ago, donald trump has overtaken him, hes 7 points ahead in our poll. Its now marco rubio moving up, rubio is seven points behind cruz and there was cruz taking heat from rubio, from the moderators and donald trump wasnt there. Donald trump wasnt taking heat so ted cruz had the big target on his back last night, not a good place to be at this point for him. Lets talk about the democrats, you saw Bernie Sanders what a clear distinction of what his definition of leadership is versus obviously Hillary Clinton. You know, iowa is clearly so important for sanders. Is it a new Campaign Style for sanders . This is the dilemma for the Sanders Campaign in this final few days right now. Theres all this talk they have a negative ad made, are they going to put it on the airwaves, will we see them attack Hillary Clinton bluntly. Remember, Bernie Sanders when he got into this race in burlington back in may he said i have never run a negative political ad in my career. You listen to that clip right there, thats a guy who is doing a different kind of campaigning than he has ever done before. Lets go over to after ri melber. Good to si you. Good to see you. I love this. Lets talk a little bit about this whole issue when the candidates were talking about immigration last night, i think that was a poignant moment, an interesting moment. Where actually policy was discussed. A lot of policy, for people who want to know what these candidates will going to do which includes that small universe of 100, 125,000 iowans that are going to caucus. Donald trump wasnt on that stage but a lot of people got into it. Lets listen to some of that. I do not support blanket amnesty. You said more than that, snier no, i said i do not support you said earned path to citizenship is basically code for amnesty. It was. At the time in the context of that was in 2009 and 2010 where the last efficient for legalization was an effort done in the senate, it was an effort led by several people that provided almost an instant path with very little october stack als. The amendment is one sentence that said anyone here illegally but it the bill the bill you were amending allowed the bill was 1,000 pages, i introduced a series of amendments each designed to fix problems in the bill. A big standoff over obviously what went down in that famous gang of eight, compromised senate bill which did ultimately pass by 68 votes but did not become slaw. I want to put on the screen to remind people out of all of that debate what did you think, marco rubio did vote yes, ted cruz did vote against it. What you see is an attempt to try to spread the needle on the controversial part, what do we do about the policy dilemma of people who are here, do they become citizens or not . Whats interesting to me is that and bush, i think, got into it a little bit about rubio, that gang of eight bill was comprehensive Immigration Reform. Which. Which includes the border, tens of thousands of Additional Border agents to the border, you know, closing that porous border and then specific steps to be taken to deal with legal and illegal immigration, including the 12 Million People, but there are metrics involved. Why dont they talk about what exactly is in that bill instead of talking about whether they poison billed it or had an amendment or two. The reason they focus on the poison pill answer is that is a way to attack each other. Looking at the law what we know is that basically theres how you do it and theres when you do it. And one of the points weve seen throughout this debate and the primary voters will assess is this idea that the when, that you have to do the wall or the Border Security first no matter what else is distinct from what the senate actually did which was try to do it all together. There are metrics and issues that had to happen in that senate bill im not stream screaming at you but the senate bill i wish people would read it before they talk about it as you do always, but there are metrics. There are. Yes. Border agents on the border. There are issues of is the border secure before the rest of the bill takes effect and thats what i think is really getting lost in this. Right. Well, is it getting lost or for the people who are watching, theres a question of both, is everyone going to watch at the same level if donald trump is there or not. As a matter of iowa it doesnt matter because the debate was in iowa, everyone is covering t we heard a dald gate. Donald trump opted out. All people know about him eggs mr. Wall. Will that be a Winning Strategy . Time will tell. There was a nuanced discussion with different points on the map between bush, rub owe, cruz and megyn kelly who was raising some of the distinctions you just did. Thanks for allowing me into your office. Lets switch over to cal perry. Theyre doing the week in miami, weekend in new york. Thats what we do here, msnbc is life everywhere. Lets talk about the social media reaction to last night. I have to tell you it doesnt seem as though there was as much enthusiasm because trump was not there but there were policy positions discussed. Important ones as well. We dont know what the Television Ratings numbers will be, hopefully next hour we will have a look at the household numbers. These are the social media metrics, google, facebook and twitter. I want to tell our viewers the organization for trumps viewers was poor. It did not rate well compared to the dbchlt op debate hashtag. Here is your google trend. Normally you would see the candidates back and forth. Trump stuck at number one all night. What does this mean . Is that means that people were asking about it. Google trending more. They were searching him more on google than any of the other candidates and by a wide margin. The next thing is the twitter handle gopdebate. Trump trended more than the gop debate. During the gop debate. And he was not at the debate. I dont know what thats going to flush out for the tv numbers. Twitter growth trump number one, rubio number two, cruz third, paul fourth, Chris Christie, we were wondering how he would do, fifth. Fifth on twitter for christie and fifth on facebook. What about bush . Not even in the top five on any of these. Something else . No, thats it. Next hour hopefully a look at the household numbers, nielsen ratings, theyre starting to filter in. Trump saying without me its not going to be the same. That will be the issue all day. More on donald trump event, he arrived in iowa last night aboard his private jet, a 757 doubled trump force one. He then ordered to Drake University down the road from the Republican Debate where his supporters were waiting. I didnt want to be here, i have to be honest. I wanted to be about five minutes away and ive enjoyed that. Ive enjoyed that. All the online polls said ive done very well with that, with the debates and ive had a kick with it, but you have to stick up for your rights. When youre treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. You have to do it. I want to bring in msnbc contributor New York Times correspondent josh baro. Good to see you. You say that what drumpd did last night was literally right out of his book art of the deal . So this is the book, the art of the deal. Look at this. This book which he says is his second Favorite Book in the world after the bible is the key to understanding what donald trump is up to, the things he describes about how he ran his real estate empire have been informing his campaign. There are a couple things that help us understand why he didnt show up to the debate. He talks about id rather fight than fold, he has folded a few times on this, he has made a number of these threats, he wanted cnn to give 5 million to veterans groups to get him to show up. He kept saying that, its like he kept saying he was going to run for president. He had to finally do it so people would believe him. Then he was going to sign the plenl not to run as independent, im not sure, yes, no, yes, he did. You sometimes have to follow through on these threats. I think the bigger thing for understanding what he did. We basically spent the last two days talk being donald trump is not going to go, is this a good or bad idea. 1982 he was building the trump blaz za casino in atlantic city. All he had was a piece of land on the boardwalk and holiday inn, all the execs will look at it. He called his Construction Superintendent and said i want them to see as many pieces of equipment. As much heavy equipment moving dirt as you can. He got 200 bulldozers and backhoes on the site. All the holiday inn execs show up, he said it doesnt matter what you do as long as you do a lot of it. Maybe it didnt matter whether it was a good or bad idea. Simply by doing it he drew all this attention, got everybody to Pay Attention to him, sucked up all the attention. For the past 48 hours instead of a countdown block to the debate the media narrative a lot was whats trump going to do. Exactly. Weve seen that over and over again in the campaign, him pulling publicity stunts, its something he talks about in the book, he said good publicity is better than bad, but bad publicity is better than no publicity at all. The weather to have an impact on turnout on monday. I want to turn to bill karins. Close call. Big storm on the west coast will call problems throughout the inner Mountain West and then start moving towards iowa and the midwest throughout the middle of the week. Iowa is used to big storms, once a winter they get a blizzard type event. This is as we go through sunday, inner mountain best, arizona, into monday colorado is going to get nailed, then we start watching iowa. Increasing clouds, the caucus will be taking place in the evening hours, the storm wont be moving in yet. Maybe not towards midnight or the overnight hours. Looks like we will get in the caucus just fine. On tuesday as we wrap up our coverage of the caucus and all the results when when it could look like a blizzard. If you talk about iowa in the wintertime, temperatures in the mid 30s, but as we go into monday night into tuesday thats when the temperatures will begin to drop and thats when we will see the conditions deteriorating and possible blizzard conditions on tuesday. Jose, the question is if you knew there was a blizzard coming, possibly a blizzard. Yeah. And if you were to go to the caucus or you knew you would be stranded home with your kids are you going to try to get those errands done. People will have the storm on their mind versus the caucus. On the other hand you can do both and do your civic duty which is an important thing to be able to do. I know that were talking about iowa because its an important thing coming up on this week, but what about florida . We have been talking about this. Another confirmed tornado from yesterday. Second tornado in 48 hours. So there have been at least four or five days this month alone with confirmed tornadoes in florida which is pretty unusual, try season down there, probably one of the worst sixweek patterns they have had in the middle of the winter in a while. Somebody asked me is this a normal pattern for florida . El nino winters florida can get tornadoes especially in march. A lot of water. You know what that means. Mosquitos and then you have the zika thing we will be talking about later. Scary. Its a real problem. Thats why we do it on this show. I will listen. Much more ahead on this busy hour of msnbc. After the break Donald Trump Holds an event raising money for wounded veterans instead of taking part in the gop debate. How did trumps version of alternate programming sit with the vets . Plus, there it is, the zika risk, its really exploding, the government of el salvador has gone so far as to advise women not to get pregnant until at least 2018. We will take you inside a lab to show you whats being done to fight this virus. There is no like antidote for it right now. Scary. Very scary. You can fly across welcome town in minutes16, or across the globe in under an hour. Whole communities are living on mars and solar satellites provide earth with unlimited clean power. In less than a century, boeing took the world from seaplanes to space planes, across the universe and beyond. And if you thought that was amazing, you just wait. Whats that, broheim . I switched to geico and got more. More savings on Car Insurance . Yeah brofessor, and more. Like renters insurance. More ways to save. Nice, brotato chip. Thats not all, brotein shake. Geico has motorcycle and rv insurance, too. Oh, thats a lot more. Oh yeah, im all about more, teddy brosevelt. Geico. Expect great savings and a whole lot more. Light piano today i saw a giant. It had no arms, but it welcomed me. crow cawing it had no heart, but it was alive. train wheels on tracks it had no mouth, but it spoke to me. It said, rocky mountaineer all aboard amazing. Just miles away during last nights debate gaap candidate donald trump was boycotting the event by hosting a fundraising rally for wounded warriors. The republican front runner tweeted he raised 6 million. Trump launched the website just for collecting donations. Money will first go through their charity, the donald j. Trump foundation before being distributed to kret advance. Kelly odonnell spokes to veterans watching the event last night. Reporter we are coming to you from the Vietnam Veterans memorial here in washington. It is really a spectacular sight, always moving, always tugs at your heart, but seeing it under the blanket of snow i think is particularly striking today. I had the chance to go and spend some time last night with veterans at an American Legion post in suburban virginia and while the American Legion posts are careful to not take any sides in politics, they were kind enough to let us come in and talk to some of the people there. I was struck by how supportive the men i spoke to were of what donald trump is doing. Weve seen some of the veterans organizations have some questions, concerns and criticism of trump in the way that he has embraced veterans and there are also different points of view when you talk to individuals who say perhaps trump is shining a light on the concerns veterans have in a way that doesnt happen on enough. All the attention that donald trump seems to be able to bring to anything he touches is at least for this moment focused on veterans. So to give you a commence e. Sense i want to share a part of my conversation with brian drummen. Any attention to veterans is good. I certainly agree with that. Is this a political stunt . Probably, yeah. Do you think it is credible that he says im going to do this, its going to be for charity . Any doubts he will follow through or make donations or do something concrete . I think if he says hes going to do Something Like that he better. Because well know. Reporter each of the men i talked to said he felt that way, that they believed that if donald trump said he was raising money for veterans that he would in fact follow through. Hes got at least that bond of people expecting that he is this tell it like it is kind of guy, big and brash and bold and they trust that he will follow through. So of course following the money in the months and weeks to come will be important to see how those donations funneled through the donald j. Trump Foundation Actually reach veterans. We did have some of our keep call veterans groups and two organizations said they had received phone calls from the Donald Trump Campaign and need to wait to see how this might be parceled out going forward. When trump announced the big donations that was in many ways the kind of bravado moment the veterans i spoke to expected and also, jose, all of them that i spoke to, and its a small group, said that they thought by skipping the debate trump was able to get attention for himself and by extension bringing some attention to veterans. So it was interesting that in suburban virginia the reaction was pretty positive to what donald trump was doing. Jose. Kelly odonnell in washington, d. C. , thanks so much. The World Health Organization says the zika virus is spreading explosively in the americas. Since last spring more than 20 countries have reported new cases of the virus. You know who is giving all the people the virus . Those things you see right there on your screen, mosquitos. It takes a lot of work. To run this business. But i really love it. Because when you live to innovate, you innovate to live. The allnew audi q7. A higher form of intelligence has arrived. The race is on to fight the zika virus now expected to infect as many as 4 Million People by the end of the year. Most of those cases are expected in central and south america, not the United States, but the cdc is warning pregnant women by traveling to zika hot zones they may be putting their babies at risk. The key thing for people to know and remember is that most of these are very mild illnesses. Its really the circumstances of pregnant women who is traveling that we want to have heightened awareness of and we really caution pregnant women to consider postponing travel. Maggie fox is nbcs Senior Health writer and kelly koeb aya is live from the lab in england. Whats the level of certain that zaek spreads to the United States . There is a lot of concern that zika will come to the United States. Most of the senior u. S. Health Officials Say it will only be the occasional small outbreak. They know this because the virus is carried by the same mosquito that carries dengue virus. There have been a few small outbreaks in the u. S. Of dengue but there is not going to be the explosive across the u. S. Like there has been in tropical zones. Thats because that mosquito that you see isnt common across most parts of the u. S. You can find it in the south. In addition you need crowded urban conditions where people are outside all the time. In the u. S. Thats just not how we live. So the Officials Say were probably not going to see an epidemic like brazil has seen. Maggie, lets talk about that when we look at the countries with active zika virus transmission right now a lot of those countries there are people with ties from i would say all of those countries and move that live in south florida, in florida, and throughout the United States. So there are family visits constantly. The other question is can that zika virus be transmitted lets say i go somewhere and i get it, you know, and come back home. Can another mosquito, you know, hit me and then go to somebody else and pass the zika virus . Thats exactly how it spreads but you have to have an active zika infection yourself, be bitten by a mosquito and that mosquito goes straight to someone else and bites them. Thats how its being transmitted now, right . Thats exactly how. Can any mosquito do it or does it have to be a specific mosquito. It has to be a specific mosquito which we dont have in the United States, south florida, houston, texas area, maybe louisiana. And, kelly, youre saying that those scientists are working on this issue right now, right . Exactly, jose, they are using the mosquito to fight the mosquito. This is the aedes aegypti behind me, 12,000 of them in these four cases and they are breeding right now. These are all genetically modified mosquitos. What scientists have been doing is they take the male of this mosquito, the genetically modified one, introduce them into the wild populations where you have the spread of some of these diseases like dengue and zika. The males breed with the females and their off spring cant survive in the mild. One none of these guys can survive in the mild because of the way theyve been genetically modified. They can wipe out 90 of the mosquito population of this species within a matter of six months, possibly more. Really . Reporter and this kind of a program yes. And the interesting thing is you can take the eggs, which are dried, and you can ship them just about anywhere. We talked to one of the scientists about that a little bit earlier. Ive got a pod of mosquito eggs here. Theres actually 3 million mosquito eggs in this pot, believe it or not. And we can ship these very easily around the world to different areas where were treating the mosquito and trying to remove the mosquito with our technology. Reporter so there you see the potential is almost the case of just adding water. Those mosquito eggs being wet then the mosquitos, the larvae hatch, before you know it you have the male genetically modified mosquitos that can be released into your hot spots in rio da jen row and wipe out large parts of these populations kelly, so many questions for you. Number one, i didnt know there was mosquito cav yer, thats the first for me. There are mosquito eggs that you can freeze. First of all, whats the possibility of creating some kind of mothzilla when you Start Playing around with the dna . There a danger that that could cause some kind of the in the eco system it could affect it . The other thing is whien havent they done that with all the other mosquitos that when you and i lived in south florida were attacking us 24 7 . Lets start with your last questi question. This genetic modification has taken ten years. It was developed ten years ago and its taken that long to get us to this point where they are in a breeding program. All of these mosquitos are linked to one mosquito which was genetically modified ten years ago. So it gives you an idea of the scope of this kind of program and what it takes to do this with just one species. And another aspect to that is you dont necessarily want to wipe out all mosquitos. Yes, you do. Reporter there are 3,500 mosquitos species. A lot of them dont bite humans so they are not really a threat to us. So its one of those cases where be careful what you mess with. In terms of the eco system. They have done a lot of tests with these mosquitos and taken a lot of looks at what kind of an affect they would have down the line in the food chain. Scientists here say not a lot. As a matter of fact, almost nil. Not a lot of predators rely on these mosquitos as a main food source. Theyve looked at the predators that do, have not seen any adverse affects in terms of having these guys out in the wild. So far it looks good but this is something that the fda is looking at right now, this program was going to be introduced in florida and received a bit of push back from the communities in the south. So its in the process of being reviewed by the fda and these are all things that they will be looking at over the past over the next year i should say. Kelly cobiella and me goy fox, thank you for being with us. After the break we will turn back to politics on the roid to iowa, the caucus there. The reviews not great for ted cruz after last nights debate. Why couldnt he capitalize on a trumpless stage . We will talk about that next. Taking control of your health isnt easy. He held a competing event to raise money for veterans but the head line in this mornings Des Moines Register says it all, rough night for cruz. Joining me now mark murray and jay newton small for time magazine. Martin, we will start with you, did cruz lose . How bad was if he lost last night this going to do for him in iowa . You know, jose, cruz didnt have a good night as the Des Moines Register put it but i wouldnt say he blew any chance to win iowa. This is going to come down to turnout. Our nbc wall street journal maris poll showed donald trump is ahead 7 points cruz is within striking distance, particularly when you look at a turnout that looks like past Republican Caucus turn outs, ones we saw in 2012 and 2008. If those are the ones that come out and trumps army doesnt come out this is a winnable contest for ted cruz. One of the reasons we saw him struggle was he was the front runner on stage with trump not on the stage and when ted cruz was the front runner he got the brunt of tough questions. It never is an easy place to be, whether youre donald trump, ted cruz or marco rubio when you have all those slings and arrows comes coming your way. Lets show a little bit from last night. Here is the back and forth. Chris, i would note that the last four questions have been rand please attack ted, marco please attack ted, chris please attack ted, jeb please attack ted. It is a debate, sir. No, no, a debate actually a policy issue but i will say this, gosh, if you guys ask one more mean question i may have to leave the stage. Dont worry, im not leaving the stage no matter what you ask me. With trump off the stage what does it seem like cruz couldnt capitalize on . You know, jose, im glad you brought up that one clip because ted cruz in past debates has been a stand out performer, one of the reasons he was a college debating champion but that was something that he has used in past debates. I remember the cnbc debate he tried to turn the tables on the moderators and on the questions but you saw the crowd boo him when he tried that, being able to go up against the liberal media it is a little harder to do when it comes to fox news. I actually think that again with trump off the stage one thing thats benity iffed ted cruz is he has been able to feed off of trump, either through the bromance that they have had or the fact that he really hasnt been donald trump. As soon as donald trump was removed ted cruz has then your prohibitive iowa front runner, things got a little more difficult for him. Jay, you were at the trump rally last night. Talk to me about the people that were there. So i decided to watch the trump rally from within the crowd last night and i sat, you know, amongst all of the, i guess, theoretically voters, but all six people that i sat with were not actually going to go caucus for donald trump. I think that this is the real sort of trapdoor for him here and its going to be a test of organization. Iowa is 1,681 caucuses and you need to have supporters in as many of those as possible to get out the vote. Last night trump is not a traditional candidate, he wasnt asking for anybodys vote. He never asked for a vote, never told people here is how you go out and caucus. None of his staff said here is a card, here is the precinct and where you go. Even people who are supporters of his last night said they didnt know where to go, they didnt think they were going to sloet for him and they were to go and do other things on monday night. Hes losing voters by the fact he doesnt have an organization thats savvy and experienced in organizing the caucuses. Maybe the idea is you just get people fired up about something that is not to directly political, even though it is, and they could get, you know, excited about going to caucus. Who knows what the theory is there. Great seeing you both. Thank you for being with us this morning. After the break a look at the importance volunteers play in the final stretch of the iowa caucuses. In New Hampshire we are moments away from a donald trump rally. Our cosmetics line was a hit. The iowa caucuses, volunteers for all of the 2016 candidates are making one final push to get iowans out to vote. Jacob is in des moines, spoke with some of the volunteers at clintons field office. Jacob. Go ahead, jacob. Jose, volunteers are extraordinarily crucial here in the first in the National Caucus state of iowa. Were at Grandview University where Hillary Clinton is going to be right up there in a little bit. I went behind the scenes at the Hillary Clinton campaign to talk to some of the volunteers who make all this happen. Nobody is here, but if the ones i talked to did a good job, this will be packed in a little bit. Take a look at this. Crunch time in iowa. Days away from the iowa caucus. This, the Hillary ClintonCampaign Field office, one of many in des moines, and everybody is making phone calls. My nak is rebecca. You look serious. Were trying to recruit folks for an event this friday. High pressure. A little bit. Right now, im in the middle of a call. Whats your name . Charles. My name is charles. Im with the Hillary Clinton campaign. How are you doing . Great, great, glad to hear this. Im wanting to invite you to get out to caucus event with our very own Hillary Clinton this friday. Can we count on you to join us . Whats the big secret to getting people to come out and support hillary . Build those relationships. Meet people where theyre at. The issues they care about. I think its really great to be around so many other people supporting hillary, every day, continuous amp up that energy. Close quarters. You guys are all here. Look at these guys. Yeah. Like get this media guy out of here. Im trying to get votes. If youre listening to his whole conversation, he says something great, and youre like, im going to use that in my next call. You take what he said, use it in yours. I wanted to let you know hillary is going to be in town friday and we would love for you to join us at her rally. Im jacob. Im rachel. Nice to meet you. Where are you from . Michigan. How many phone calls do you think youve made . Thousands. Thousands of phone calls . Sure. I couldnt put a number on it. Theres a sign here in the Hillary Clinton office with a quote from the Bernie Sanders campaign, what this campaign is about is an excitement and energy that does not exist and will not exist in the clinton campaign. Bernie sanders, just a couple days ago. Is that true . No, we have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. We have a field office on a wednesday evening. I think we have the energy. Jose, the Campaign Says they literally have thousands of volunteers on the ground making phone calls like that, knocking on doors which is another crucial, crucial thing in the first of the nation caucus state. In the next hour, im going to give you an amazing tutorial about the secret to a good door knock. That should be interesting. Jacob, how many people does this place fit where youre at . I would say probably, jose, in here right now, well see at least a couple hundred people, if not more. Again, you can see the auditorium here is completely empty. After the secret service sweeps, hopefully the volunteers have done a good job. Thank you very much. Good to see you. Any minute now, we expect donald trump to take the stage to rally supporters. This is his first rally since the one he held last night instead of attending the final Republican Debate before the iowa caucuses. With trump off the stage, all the incoming fire seemed to be aimed at senator ted cruz. Chris, i was mentioned in that question. Your name wasnt mentioned. It was named. Sir, sir i think the question was about its not my question you get a chance to respond to. Its his answer. You dont get 30 seconds to respond to me. Your question was you have disagreed with you dont get 30 seconds. I would like to go on. Sir, i know you like to argue about the rules but were going to conduct the debate. Where would note the last four questions have been rand, please attack ted. Marco, please attack ted. Chris, please attack ted. Jeb, please attack ted. Book boos ] it is a debate, sir. A debate is a policy issue, but i will say this. Gosh, if you guyed ask one more mean question, i may have to leave the stage. Good morning. Im jose diazbalart. Lets get to the political coverage. Kerry sanders and Kristen Welker on the campaign trail along with Steve Kornacki, ari melber, cal perry, and bill karins. Kristen welker in iowa, Kerry Sanders in New Hampshire, and Steve Kornacki is to me right here in new york. Kerry, let me start with you as we wait for trump. I understand people started lining up early this morning. They did indeed. Theres a capacity crowd here at the radisson. About 1200 people have packed the room. Early this morning outside, you can see the line was very long. A lot of those folks in line say that they approved and applauded Donald Trumps decision to boycott the debate last night. They say that they tuned in to watch his event, which was raising money for veterans. He raised, he says, more than 5 million. Interestingly, many of the people i also spoke to, though, said they had a twoscreen or threescreen night. They were clicking back and forth, going to the debate then going back to the donald trump veterans event. And at the same time, on their phones or their computers, doing googling as they were watching the debate asking questions to see what sort of responses they could get. Meernt, donald trump says he wanted to be at that debate but could not do it because he felt he had been disrespected. This is what he had to say on camera. I didnt want to be here. I have to be honest. I wanted to be about five minutes away. I have enjoyed that. I enjoyed that. All the online polls said i have done very well with that, with the debates. And i had a kick with it. But you have to stick up for your rights. When youre treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. You have to do it. Donald trump is expected to be out here in just a few minutes. He will likely address the fact that he did not participate in that debate last night. A debate that early indications show was the Second Lowest rated debate, somewhere between 11 million and 13 Million Viewers versus the one back in august which was a record 24 Million Viewers. Jose. Thank you very much, kerry. Steve kornacki is with me now. And steve, you saw how ted cruz got into it with the moderators last night. This is how rubio went after him on the immigration issue. Lets listen to that. This is the lie that teds campaign is built on, and rand touched upon it. Hes the most conservative guy and everyone else is everyone else is a rhino. The truth is, ted, throughout the campaign, you have been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes. You worked for george w. Bushs campaign. You helped design george w. Bushs immigration policy. And then when you got to the senate, you did an interview with cbs news, i wasnt part of the video, where you said on the issue of people here illegally, we can reach a compromise. Then in the committee, you said i want to bring people out of the shadows. Now you want to trump trump on immigration. Were not going to beat Hillary Clinton with someone willing to say or do anything to win an election. That was interesting, steve, because in a certain way, rubio also changed his mind. For the bill that he fought for and passed, a bipartisan bill on immigration and then he walked away from it. The republican base, if you look at the part of the base that does not like the idea of Immigration Reform, all of those candidates last night arguing on this have vulnerabilities with the base to varying degrees. In rubios case, why was he behind the gang of eight . Because the Republican Party in the election said in their autopsy report, we need a change on this issue. President obama got 71 of the latino vote. That was the driving force. Rubio saw his path to the future in the Republican Party being im going to lead the party. Im going to lead them there. Somewhere in 2013, he said the politics in this party are not what i thought they were. He reversed course. Jeb bush talked about immigration as an act of love. He reversed course. Now, the politics of it, heres what i sigh see. Ted cruz arguing with marco rubio, with jeb bush, all over immigration. The one guy who wasnt there last night is the one who the base thinks right now cant be touched on immigration. Cruz is in second place or first place depending on the polls in iowa right now. How important was this debate for him last night and house important was how he did last night . Theres two problems for ted cruz right now in iowa. One is hes fallen behind donald trump. One of the issues he sees motivative conservative voters is immigration. Didnt get helped on that issue last night. The other problem he is, though, is marco rubio is moving up fast in iowa. Hes near 20 , about seven points behind cruz. Cruz has two bad things that could happen tuesday night. One is he doesnt win iowa. Its tough to see him winning the nomination if he doesnt win iowa. Not only does donald trump beat him in iowa on monday night, marco rubio catches him for second place. That would be catastrophic for cruz. Lets talk with Kristen Walker in iowa covering a democratic race. Its going to come down to the wire in iowa, right . Its absolutely going to come down to the wire. Were seeing senator Bernie Sanders sharpen his attacks against secretary clinton, as he starts to gain momentum, getting momentum in the polls as well. Its interesting, jose, because he had vowed not to go negative in this campaign. He certainly is walking right up to the line. He just released a new ad criticizing secretary clinton for her close ties to wall stre street. For her part, secretary clinton on defense and trying to make the argument she is the most experienced candidate, the best candidate to take on republicans. Were seeing two different types of rhetoric. Take a listen to both of the candidates from yesterday on the trail. It is great to be against the war after you vote for the war. It is great to be for gay rights after you insult the entire Gay Community by supporting doma. It is great to finally kicking and screaming come out against the tpp but where were you on all of the other trade agreements . We have work to do. We dont need another gridlocked political debate that divides us and avoids getting something done. So i intend to tell you exactly what i want to do and how i will pay for it. I want you to know that. Those of you who are going to caucus for me, i thank you. For others still making up their mind, go on my website, hillaryclinton. Com. Look at what i want to do and how i will pak for it, because i want to have an election on that agenda. And its a real jump ball here in this critical first caucus state of iowa, jose. Take a look at the past five polls. Secretary clinton leads in three of them. Bernie sanders leads in two of them. Really by narrow margins. So right now, both campaigns focused on their ground game, making sure their supporters turn out to caucus on monday. Theyre also turning to their top surrogates. Secretary clinton has a number of event here in iowa today, and then tonight, she wraps it up with her first joint event with former president bill clinton and daughter chelsea clinton. For his part, Bernie Sanders will be campaigning with cornel west. He has been a big critic of president barack obama. President obama very popular among the democratic base. Right now, a jump ball, and iowa could set the tone for the rest of this nominating contest. Kristen welker, thank you very much. Steve, i want to talk about iowa a little bit. On the democratic side, it was always New Hampshire, its close to vermont. Its going to be bernies to take. But iowa was always considered by the pundits as probably safe for Hillary Clinton. Is this even if he comes in, you know, tight second, could he win either way . Well, i think his campaign will tell you yes. I think realistically if youre looking for a scenario where Bernie Sanders wins the democratic nomination, he needs the onetwo punch. He needs to win iowa, New Hampshire. He needs there to be panic around the clinton campaign. He needs the world to change in a way thats hard to imagine because of the firewall she has in the subsequent states. The poll numbers, the issue of turnout, if Hillary Clinton loses to Bernie Sanders, if you have average turnout, she wins. If you have a little higher than average turnout, she wins, lower margin. If you get to 2,000 or above, the level we saw with barack obama in 2008, he wins iowa. Steve kornacki, Kerry Sanders and Kristen Welker, thank you for being with me. I want to head over to ari melber. I think we need a sign bigger than legal that says ari melber. You would have to talk to more important people than me about that. Lets talk about the legal side of it. There was some discussion last night about striking a balance between free speech and fighting terror. This was fascinating. Were playing this for the first time. Its an important moment that didnt get ozmuch attention. The real issue between liberty and security, which are both, we know, popular values here in the Republican Party. Lets look at this exchange with marco rubio. The Supreme Court has made clear that hateful speech is generally protected by the First Amendment. In other words, radical muslims have the right to be radical muslims unless they turn to terror. Doesnt your position run afoul of the First Amendment . Thats the problem. Radical muslims and radical islam is not just hate talk. Its hate action. They blow people up. Look what they did in san bernardino. They certainly do blow people up, but rubio sort of ducked the issue. We want to give people some legal Fact Checking here. Obviously, if anyone is doing anything physically criminal or violent, that is against the law. The laws already support those prosecutions. What rubio has talked about is we should shut down places where anyone was inspired to do terror. That could run afoul of the First Amendment because people have the right to gather and discuss. Lets look specifically at one example that shows where the line is. Here is a doj prosecution where numerous statements of a defendant expressing support for isil is cited. Ultimately, what makes it a crime is details like this. The person went to a walmart store, purchased supplies for an operation, zip ties, knives, lutex gloves. Thats what got them charged by the obama doj for Material Support for isis. Even though they didnt carry it through and you could say, hey, this is for gardening, there was clearly an indication it wasnt for gardening. Speech went to the vision, but it was conduct, planning. Rubio legally was trying to blur it or have it a little bit both ways. The truth is there is terrible speech, be it for isis or nazis or anything. We hear a lot of that. That is protected. Whether that emanates from the left, right or in between, meynn kelly was trying to point out he really hasnt explained and voters might want to hear where you draw the line because the speech itself under current law is protected even for isis. Ari, thanks so much. Msnbc Senior Editor for video and tech is cal perry. Hes here in his area of our offices here. Yes, sir. Lets talk about the impact of the debate and no trump. Did this work, right . Its a crazy move not showing up for the debate. We have the initial nielsen ratings in. I want to tell our viewers this is just the top 25 markets in america. So think your major cities, new york, l. A. , miami. 7. 1 Million People tuned in from those 25 markets. How does that compare to the first debate . Well, the first debate got 13. 8 million. Thats 49 lower. A big drop. All of the ratings have been dropping consistently since the first one to this one, right . Correct. Theres going to be viewer fatigue, debate fatigue. How does it compare to the average . The average debate this year got 9. 6 Million Viewers. So thats about 26 lower. Again, absolutely right. We need to be clear with the viewers. This is like exit polling. Well see how the numbers flush out during the day. As you her kerry say, as you play it out mathematically, 11 million to 13 million probably tuned in. Thats a good number, but the Second Lowest debate of the rear. If these numbers stay true, and we should know about 1 00 whether or not that stays true. Look at the twitter reverb because we talked about this earlier in the hour. People were not talking about trumps event, but he was still the most talked about candidate at a debate he didnt show up to. During the time the debate was going forward. And whos paying close attention to that . The man himself. He just tweeted this about 15 minutes ago. Great twitter poll and i wasnt even there. 36 of people talking about the debate were talking about donald trump. Well have the final results of the ratings around 1 00 p. M. Eastern time. Between 1 00 and 4 00. Good to see you. Lets head over to josh barrow. Looking at the endorsement primary. Hey, jose. Good to see you. These are numbers put together by 538. You talk to political scientists, theyll tell you if you want to figure out who is going to win the nomination, look at who is getting endorsed by governors, senators. At least in the past, right . In the past. When you look at this, saying who is winning the endorsement primary, jeb bush is winning the endorsement primary. Thats about the only thing hes winning. He has 50 points. Five points for a senator, ten for a governor, one for a member of the house. He has endorsements from five snores, 26 members of the house. Marco rubio is doing well, Chris Christie, mike huckabee. And then you get all the way to the bottom. Donald trump has zero points. Hes endorsed by no members of the house, no senators, no governors, yet hes leading in the polls. You look at this compared to previous years. Three days before the iowa caucus. What was it like three days before iowa in previous elections. You can see jeb bush has 51 points. Mitt romney had like 148 points. He had about three times mr. Establishment. He was really mr. Establishment. Then george w. Bush had several hundred points. He had locked up the entire parmy in advance of the nominati nomination. Its endorsing nobody is winning it. You can look at it, of 31 sitting republican governors, only four have endorsed anybody. Of 54 republicans in the senate, only 13 have endorsed them. The vast majority of them are sitting on their hands. Theyre not in love with the candidates and theyre waiting and endorsing nobody. Its one of the reasons donald trump has been as strong as he is. Maybe 2016 is the antiendorsement year. If youre the guy with the endorsements. Its going to work against you. Steve, come on in. Lets have this chat. This is a thought. This is such a different electoraelek electoral year. The establishment in the past, maybe now more endorsements is a bad thing. This has been a bad year for political science, a good year for people who like suspenls. Political science thought they had this figured out. This was true in the past. Jeb bushs entire strategy was predicated on what his brother din in 2000. They talked about shock and awe. When jebs people were talking shock and awe, they were thinking what george w. Did in 2000. You lock up the money, lock up the endorsements and everybody else falls in line. It just hasnt happenped. He wasnt able to lock up the endorsements. Think about how much money hughes wei able to put in his war chest. You have 100 million before you even jump into the race. That is, i got this thing pretty much sewn up. The other thing that doesnt count that is worthwhile mentioni mentioning. Someone like sarah palin has influenced talk radio hosts. The ihave millions of listeners. They have been kind to donald trump and given him a lot of energy. Its tough to come up with a measure frment that. Jerry falwell jr. Has a lot of validators in the conservative movement who have really been saying hes a conservative regardless of what he said. Well continue this. Weather is certainly possibly having an impact on the turnout in iowa on monday. Lets go over to bill karins. Theres probably not anyone in iowa who doesnt realize they have a major storm heading their way. Whats the timing going to be . Were pinpointing tuesday, the day after the caucus. We get our Weather Information twice a day. Were getting in some of the newer information and then 9 00, 10 00 p. M. We get new information on. This is the storm on the west coast. Heres a new piece of information. Sunday, 9 00 a. M. , light rain over the area. That storm will be exiting by the time we get to monday. Heres mondays forecast. Monday does not look too bad. The storm itself actually is trending slower, which is better for iowa. It looks like on monday, when they start to caucus, the snow will be here heading from colorado into kansas and iowa is looking fine. So thats good. So heres the timing of it for the weekend. The storm is going to come into the rockies as we go through sunday. Really nasty stuff. Southern utah into colorado. Then as we push the storm into the central plains, that snow will break out late in the day. The earliest Case Scenario for iowa is early tuesday morning, more like during a daylight event on tuesday. That could be blizzard conditions. And also severe weather. Heres the actual forecast for the iowa caucuses. By iowa standards, this is nice. Mid30s. No one is complaining with temperatures like this. Tuesday will be a different story, 20s, windy, possibly a blizzard. The trend actually is slower, jose, and thats better for everyone in iowa. One less thing to worry about as they try to figure out the beginning of the president ial process. Im thinking, and you know, just bringing it back to me for a second. Of course. I come to new york last week. It was warm. I get here, bam. The storm. And then i go to iowa tomorrow morning because well be covering the caucuses. And you tell me a storm is coming. Youre saying this is about you . I think it is about me. Not at all, but it is about the weather every time i go somewhere. A blizzard correspondent of 2016. Thanks. I talked to some people here, international visitors, a group from china. When i said we were reporting about donald trump, the woman recognized that name immediately and said he is very rich. Well, the veterans i talked to last night made that point as well. But what was interesting to me in talking with some veterans at an American Legion post in suburban virginia, that one man in particular who had served in the army during the vietnam era talked about how despite the billions and the big deals that donald trump has made so much a part of his career and his story in this political year, they described feeling a connection to him, which might surprise people. I was a little struck by it as well. And in talking about trump skipping the debate and going for this veterans event separately, i was asking them to play political analyst for a moment, and most said that they thought it was fine for him to step aside from the debate. And they really appreciated the attention to veterans needs and causes. And said there isnt enough about that in the political cycle. Sometimes the candidates talk about veterans, but dont follow through. They were impressed buhis claim of raising 6 million. I spoke with reign gilbert, and he had a lot to say about trump, telling me that trump, cruz, and rubio are among his top picks. But he was very favorable about donald trump. I think he really feels concerned for the veterans. I think he sees the double talk in a lot of politicians about veterans. I think he feels somebody needs to stand up and speak for them from the heart. And as a veteran, i support that very much. Hes a natural guy. Talk to anybody at this legion. And if they felt they got dissed, they say, screw you. Im not going to go. He relates to us as people. Hes not a good politician. He isnt. But he may be a good leader. He may be a strong president. And god knows we need one. So that gives you the sense of what mr. Gilbert felt. We had a long conversation, and he really said that he believes that donald trump is authentic. That is something that he doesnt necessarily see in other candidates. He told me he hasnt made a final decision on whom to vote for, but cruz and rubio are also attracting his attention. In each of the conversations i had, i was struck by the willingness of these men to take trump at his word, the fact they appreciated the sort of direct and even crazy way hes been speaking during the campaign season. They told me, yes, they have cringed at times, but the overall is that they think hes saying the right things for veterans. Kelly odonnell, thank you very much. Speaking of donald trump, i believe his rally is getting under way. Lets listen. We love you, too. We love you, too. They said, you know what we can do . We can cancel New Hampshire, mr. Trump, and you can stay. I said, how big a crowd . Full house. I said theres no way were cancelling. Im going here and going right back. Im going right back. But you know, last night, we had an exciting night because i did something that was a little bit unusual. The fact is, and i said it, and you know, i have a very Good Relationship with fox, but when somebody doesnt treat you properly, you got to be tough. You got to be strong. You cant let them push you around. And that you know, it goes for the country. When youre not treating properly, you have to stick up for your rights. If im your leader, were going to stick up for the rights of the country. Were not going to let the ten sailors two weeks ago where theyre in a begging position with their hands up, and then kerry is trying to say like its normal. Its not normal. You fix the boat, you ship them back up. You dont make a big deal out of it. Two days theyre sitting on their knees and theyre kneeling and they have their hands up and guns at their heads. Thats not going to happen anymore, folks. Let me tell you. Not going to happen. And the only reason we got them back is were giving them 150 billion the following day. 150 billion. That deal was so sad. One thing i cant do you know, i would have done so so different. It would have been so different. Number one, we would have had our hostages back long before we started. And i went into that. It would have been very easy because we wouldnt have started unless they gave them back. Then we would have doubled up the sanctions. By the way, 100 . Number two, i would have never given them the 150 billion. Other than that, we would have had a fine negotiation. But the sad part is ill go in and i can never get that money back. Do you see where theyre spending the money . Theyre spending it in europe. They put money into italy. Theyre spending it in russia for missiles. I didnt know they were allowed to do missiles, right . Theyre not supposed to, but theyre spending it everywhere but the United States. Theyre buying 118 airbus planes. Theyre made in europe. Theyre not buying boeings. Why are they allowed to buy airbus planes . Were run by stupid people, folks. And its going to end. Going to end. Its going to end. So last night was amazing. Ill talk about it for a couple seconds. You notice i dont use teleprompters. This means we can do current events. Theres big al. Stand up, al. My vet. I love my vet. Hes the best guy. Hes the best guy. I tell you, hes a dedicated guy. Good man. And he probably liked me even more. Last night, i raised 6 million for the vets. What . Thought you were coming to New Hampshire to the homeless vets shelter. Well be doing that soon. We spent a lot of time up in New Hampshire with the vets. And al has been helping us a lot, and some of als friends. Its been amazing. You have a big vet problem up here. The vets are not treated right. Illegal immigrants are treated better than our vets in many cases. That cant happen. What happened last night though was amazing because i wasnt treated right. I did something that was very risky, and i think it turned out great because im on the front page of every paper. Getting more publicity than if i you know. I dont know. And i had an amazing soldier last night, john, who you saw get up. And john wayne, we call him. And he got up and he made an amazing speech. He lost his leg. He was a real guy and is a real guy, and he talked about the vets and talked about the problems and talked about what he went through and how hard it was. And when he left, they gave him a whole big box of pills and said good luck. He didnt know what to do. He gave, i dont know if you got to see it last night, but it was an amazing story of how difficult it is. And now hes in great shape. He has a fantastic family and wife. They got him through it. But it was a tough time for him. The way he explained it, i had never heard it explained that way. Not even al explained it that good, i have to tell you. So al, youre going to have to take lessons. Im going to send you to meet him. He was really fantastic. And it was an incredible evening. This way, we made our point. And fox was very nice. They very much wanted me for the debate. They tried very much. I wanted to do it, frankly. I asked them, i said give 5 million to the vets. And ill consider it. And they probably had a hard time doing that, maybe. I understand that. I said make a donation 5 million to the vets, and ill come and do your debate. They were really unable psychologically to do that. And i said thats okay. We went out and raised 6 million, which is fantastic. So it worked out. It all works out. It all works out. You know, so we have a big day coming up. We have number one, we have february 1st. I think were going to do really well in iowa. I think were going to surprise. Were leading in the iowa polls now, and leading pretty good. And cruz is in second place. He got really pummeled last night. Actually, im glad i wasnt there. He got pummeled. Wow. And you know, they didnt even mention he was born in canada, right . When youre born in canada, youre not supposed to run for president of the United States. Prime minister of canada, no problem. He can run in canada. Prime minister of canada, no problem. So he got beaten up pretty badly last night. I dont know whats going to happen to his poll numbers, but probably theyre not going up. I was just told that ours went up because of what we did last night. Isnt that something . You know, it tells you a little bit about risk. Because risk is interesting. You know, in theory, i would have rather done the debate because youre leading. You dont want to change the wheels, right . You want to just go, get it done, win, and go to the next one. And i took a chance. I mean, iing to a chance. Its something you have to do. I took a chance and we did something. I dont know what the end result. I heard we went up. But whatever the result, i did the right thing. I did the right thing because i did something great for veterans. When you think of it, these politicians run that debate, most of them dont know what theyre doing. Theyre talking, talking, talkitalk, and were raising many for the credible people. Theres Something Really Nice about it. It could not have been better. It was a ten. As they say, when something works out, it was a ten. I didnt know it was going to be a ten. I tell you, i started getting good feelings when i went to the arena. It was a beautiful theater, but it only held 750 people. We had thousands of people outside. Thousands. And when you see that kind of what would you call love, really love. It was a great feeling. So we had an amazing time. I just want to show you numbers just came out. I love to talk about polls. I always say, when youre number one, you talk. All these time, the politicians ask me, why do you mention polls . Because im number one and youre number seven. You know, its true. [ cheers and applause ] true. Heres drudge. By the way, an amazing guy, drudge. But they have a poll, choice for president. Last night, came out late last night. Trump, 65 . Believe that . 65 . Cruz is 17 , rubio, 6 . And i wont even mention the other one hes so low. Let me give you a hand. He spent about 125 million so far in the debate. He likes common core, and hes weak on the border. They come in as an act of love, right . How do you spend 100 some odd million and youre at the bottom of the pack . You spend 100 some odd million. I could give that money to you. Where is somebody . I could give it to anybody. I could pick many people out there that would do a lot better than this with that kind of money. Time magazine has a poll. Trump, 53 . Rube, 12 . Cruz, 7 . Slate has a poll. Trump, 46 . 18 , 13 . These are amazing polls. National poll, cnn has been great. 41, 19. Zagby has been great, 45, 13. These polls are great. Now, we have to get back to the important stuff here, New Hampshire, right . This just came out. New hampshire, were leading 34 to 16. Were leading 3612. 3612. In florida, we have 4820. Florida. Come on. New hampshire, lets get with it. 48. I mean, 48 is serious stuff. So we have a lot of great polls. Fox news and New Hampshire, 31, 14, and 31, 14, and 13. We should be in really great shape. Were leading nicely in iowa. An iowa poll just came out, 34 to 14 to 12. Really great. But it all doesnt matter if you dont go and vote. You know, you have to go out and vote. No matter what. I kid when i say this, but you may be feeling badly. Your wife may have said i dont want to be with you anymore. Im out. Or your husband it does happen the other way. The husband could say im out of here. No matter what it is, you may have lost your job. You may be in a state of major, major depression. Get up and vote. I will get rid of your depression. Youll be happy. Youll be happy. Youre in deprepgz because you cant get jobs in this country that are good. You have to get out and vote. So important. The 9th in your case. We start in the 1st in iowa, a big thing with the caucus. Im going to be out there. I went from there to here. And now im going back. How loyal is that to New Hampshire . Seriously, do i get points . Thats true. Do i get points . My people said no, you shouldnt mention that. I said, shouldnt i mention it . They said, no, you shouldnt mention that, mr. Trump. You know, a little bit not nice. I am going to mention it. I mean, everyone said, dont do it. Theyll understand. They could have called you last night, its been canceled. I just felt guilty. When somebody like jeb bush who spent 100 some odd million, i have spent almost nothing and im high. Isnt that a beautiful thing . Thats what the country needs, right . Thats what the country needs. But see now, im changing. Now im changing. I have to tell you. Im changing because two things. Number one, i feel guilty. The press keeps saying why do you spend so little money . Donald trump talking about the finances of running for president. As a republican in the primaries. I want to turn now to the democrats and the final sprint to iowa. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders have a busy day on the campaign trail as they fight for the top prize in the first contest of the 2016 president ial campaign. Karen finney is Strategic Communications adviser for the clinton campaign. Great seeing you. Good to see you, too. Lets start by getting your reaction to what sanders said about Hillary Clinton last night. Listen to this. Okay. Its great to be against the war after you vote for the war. It is great to be for gay rights after you insult the entire Gay Community by supporting doma. It is great to finally kicking and screaming come out against the tpp but where were you on all of the other trade agreements . Senator sanders, karen, says hes boringly consistent, and in what he said here, everything is true. Well, heres the thing about senator sanders. You know, its disappointing. Remember at the beginning, he said im never going negative. Im not going to run a negative ad. What have we seen in the last couple weeks . As things have tightened up, as the scrutiny has intensified on his plans and increasing numbers of folks said, hey, this Health Care Plan doesnt add up, he maybe should rework his math unstead of attacking Hillary Clinton, he said he wouldnt run a negative ad, hes running nevative ads. Hes changed his position on the gun manufacturer liability issue. I understand why hes attacking Hillary Clinton, things are tightening up. Hes trying to deflect from the fact that, literally, a scathing editorial from the Washington Post essentially saying it doesnt seem like hes thought these things through. So unfortunately, i think well see more of that the closer we get. Is it negative campaigning to talk about what the other candidate did and didnt do in positions . Because again, nothing he is saying there is untrue, right . Well, but its not the whole truth, right . And also for him to have said, particularly on gay rights, remember, he said to an msnbcs own rachel maddow, i was sort of for civil unions and i didnt go further because, you know, it had just been too which is clintons position. But remember, he said he wouldnt go further because at the time the fight in vermont had been too intense. Thats not quite exactly what was going on at that time. Then he calls hrc, Human Rights Campaign, the establishment, and kind of attacks them because he didnt get their endorsement. And theres more. You know, hillarys position, as she talked about. She evolved on that position. I think thats a good thing in leaders, as they get more information. They say, you know what . Maybe i was wrong on this. Maybe i need to change the way y im thinking about this. She voted for the iraq war, but i have to tell you, how many years ago was that . But were still talking about. Its still a political position on both sides of the aisle. Shes put forward a plan to deal with isis, and she clearly has the experience that we need to deal with the threats that were facing around the world. Again, folks are questioning. He wants to normalize relations with iran. He wants to put iranian soldiers with, you know, in syria, right at israels doorstep. Then he kind of says i didnt say that. I guess my point is senator sanders has had a few evolutions of his own. Youre thinking hes not boringly consistent as he says he is. Not so much, but this is what youre going to see. Its part of the campaign. Ill tell you whats different, though. What youre hearing Hillary Clinton talk about is the issues that matter to people. She is focused on true, but her people can talk about things. Lets remember just a couple weeks ago, they were talking about Bernie Sanders health, for example. Actually, that was not from the campaign. That was totally on the outside. You reject that . Absolutely. We made it very clear, very quickly, that that was inappropriate. Very quickly, talk to me about iowa. Unexpected the closeness, but if Hillary Clinton wins this one, or she doesnt . Well, look. We have a great ground game in iowa. We have a great team. Grassroots organizers. They have been there since april working hard. We feel good about iowa. But remember, we got to get through iowa, New Hampshire, south carolina, we have nevada. And then weve got a whole slew of states in march. And we feel good about where we are and the work were doing. Karen finney, always a pleasure to see you. Thanks for being with me. Tonight, by the way, on nbc nightly news, lester holt interviews Hillary Clinton. I want to interview her for telemundo and for msnbc. I want to go to iowa and bring in nbc senior Political Editor mark murray and alex seitzwald. Lets talk about iowa, the importance of iowa for Hillary Clinton and for Bernie Sanders. Right, jose. Its critical for any candidates, but especially now in the twoperson race. No one expected it to get this close with Hillary Clinton, who of course, lost the 2008 caucus, came in third place to barack obama, and does not want a repeat performance. Just a couple months ago, if you told me we would be standing here with three days to go, essentially tied up. Really close race. I wouldnt have believed you. Because the expectations were so high for Hillary Clinton, she had so much, so many strengths and assets going into this. So she really wants to blunt his momentum, not only wants to win but try to win by a little bit of a margin heading into New Hampshire which is a stronger state for him, and then shell be Better Beyond that. For sanders, this is a great chance for him to show as he says the once inevitable front runner is not so inevtnlt. Even coming within a few points, hillarys campaign will be happy about that. Lets talk about the fact in iowa, very well, Bernie Sanders could win. Certainly, Hillary Clinton could win. Talk to me about the scenario coming out of iowa if, lets say, Bernie Sanders wins or Bernie Sanders loses. Yeah, you know, jose, i think the stakes are really big for both campaigns. If Bernie Sanders comes out with a win in iowa and then New Hampshire, all of a sudden, were going to be in a marathon contest. Hillary clinton would have the advantage in south carolina, maybe also in nevada in the march 1st contest, the socalled s. E. C. Primary. But were going to count every single delegate, every super delegate from here to june. Conversely, if Hillary Clinton ends up winning iowa, Bernie Sanders ends up losing,io can see a path where Hillary Clinton wins iowa, wins south carolina, and has the mathematical edge when you talk about the proportional allocation of these delegates to then start maybe ever so slightly turning to the general election. In a lot of ways, the way im almost looking at the iowa contest is a win or loss kind of determines how long the democratic primary season is going to go on. Alex seitzwald and mark murray thank you for being with me. Appreciate your time. The candidates exchanged intense blows when the topic of immigration came up in last nights Republican Debate. You used to support a path to citizenship. So did you. But you changed in the book. So did you, marco. You wrote a book where you changed your position. He is the king of saying, oh, youre for amnesty. Everybody is for amnesty except for ted cruz, but its a falseness. Thats an authenticity problem. The truth is ted, throughout the problem, you have been willing to say or do anything to get votes. In the committee, you said i want to bring people out of the shadows. You you want to trump trump on immigration. Joining me now, elise foley, with the huffington post. Great to see you. Talk to me about the candidates. They attacked one another on their previous and current records. Who do you think came out on top . Its hard to say obthat. I think rand paul made a good point that it really highlighted how there was an authenticity problem. He said for ted cruz, but also for marco rubio and jeb bush. I think jeb bush got a good little jab in there, saying so did you, when rubio said you used to support a path to citizenship. At the same time, by doing that, he was saying, yes, youre right. I did change my position on that. Which is not really the most flattering thing. Chris christie at the end of it said, oh, this is all washington nonsense. I think maybe people will find that to be appealing. That hes sort of a straight talker. He kind of got, you know, scooted through without having to talk really about his stance on immigration. For all of them who did, they showed they have these inconsistencies. What i dont get is how its become in politics so easy to discuss issues. And never having to go to the source material. So for example, if you talk about amnesty and what that means, nobody it seems read the senate bill. And marco rubio is changing his position on a bill that he helped write. Jeb bush talks about it. Theres a book that he wrote about it. Its all in writing. Why is it that its so easy to talk semantics and not base it on source material which would make it easy to see where they stand and if or not they have change it would be great if they talked more about source material. I think the biggest thing is this word amnesty. People throw out the word. And they dont really define what it means to them. It can mean all sorts of different things. Then they just say, amnesty bad. If you just listen to the way that the republicans talk about that gang of eight immigration bill, you would think all it did was a path to citizenship. It did so many other things. It had these conditions on the path to citizenship. So its just a way that they, you know, get away with not really talking about their Actual Solutions for things, to just say, oh, this is amnesty. You know, i dont support amnesty. Im not going to really get into too far what i support because some of it looks bad and would look bad in the general election. So ill just, you know, use this term. Because in the senate bill and in all of the other discussions about Immigration Reform, even in the house of representatives, nothing came out of those conversations. But there are there are points. And positions. And standards. And metrics. So you know, even the senate bill had tens of thousands of new Border Patrol guards to go to the border. There were metrics before anything could happen, visavie the 11 million or 12 million undocumented. All this stuff is like lost in the wind of rhetoric. Yeah, and whats also getting lost is the fact that the immigration situation right now in a lot of ways is getting better. You have fewer undocumented immigrants than you did before. There are fewer apprehensions on the border, which usually is a metric to determine how many people are actually coming across. So if you just listen to these politicians, you would think the situation was completely, you know, out of control and worse than it used to be. Thats not the case. Whether there are less apprehepgzs or more apprehensions on the border, if there is no discussion on Immigration Reform that deals with a border, it doesnt really matter because more or less, its still going to happen, because no one is doing anything about it. Thanks for being with me. So good to see you. Thank you so much. Up next, a spec look at the volunteers rallying potential caucusgoers in iowa. Jacob soboroff reveals the secrets behind how to knock on a door. And lots of live events on the campaign trail. Donald trump in New Hampshire, Chris Christie in iowa. I did, jose. Were at Grandview University where Hillary Clinton will be in a bit doing her get out and caucus event. Every person has been contacted by a volunteer to get them here. Arguably, the volunteers are more important in crunch time in the make or break first in the nation iowa caucus. The kacandidatess messages, th get a phone call or an Old Fashioned door knock. What issues are getting you excited, making you lean in that direction . Free college for everybody . You know, hillary is youre good. You have an answer. Lets go. Hillary is also offering a free college plan, which i would suggest you look into. Its on her website. I can get you a little bit about it as well. Her plan is offering the same kind of Free State College kind of reaching out for that. Its something that we have adapted in a lot of european countries. Something we need to have here, especially as a 23yearold, someone just graduated from college. Im definitely seeing the effects of that. Some of bernies things he hasnt quite pinpointed how hes going to do that. Thats important to know. I might reconsider. That would be great. So that was i think that was pretty good. Jose, so you know, all together, pretty incredible, the work that volunteers like jenna do. They may be volunteers, but theyre professional persuaders, i guess we could say. And think about the dedication, because it is cold out here. Theyre going to go out this weekend, saturday and sunday, and knock on doors all across the state because of the what some call strange unique caucus process. We have to get people there in person, 7 00 p. M. Have to stay there for two hours. Requires a lot of hard work by a lot of dedicated volunteers. Jacob soboroff, thank you very much. The republican president ial frontrunner is holding a rally in New Hampshire right now, where moments ago, he talked about his absence from last nights final Republican Debate before the iowa caucuses. Trump claims now the event raised 6 million for vets. I did something that was very risky, and i think it turned out great because im on the front page of every paper. Im getting more publicity. I wanted do it fringly. I said give 5 million to the vets. And ill consider it. And they probably had a probably hard time doing that, maybe. And i understand that, but i said give 5 million, make a donation of 5 million to the vets, and ill come and do your debate. And they were really unable psychologically to do that. And i said thats okay. We went out and raised 6 million, which is fantastic. So it worked out. So it all works out. Again, that was donald trump just moments ago. His event still going on right now.
