Hands meeting without its ceo, Mark Zuckerberg, or coo, Sheryl Sandberg, this as Cambridge Analytica suspends its ceo after another undercover tape catches him touting his very close connection to President Trump himself. Have you met with mr. Trump . Many times. All the data, all the analytics, all the targeting. If you had a hard time hearing that, he said many times. We begin with breaking news out of austin, texas. Police have officially confirmed that the suspected serial bomber is dead. The suspect blew himself up as the s. W. A. T. Team was preparing to engaged. The suspect is deceased and has significant injuries from a blast that occurred from detonating a bomb inside his vehicle. We dont know where this suspect has spent his last 24 hours. And therefore we still need to remain vigilant to ensure that no other packages or devices have been left in the community. Remember, all of this comings after a chaotic month were five bombs were detonated, killing dr Draylon Mason and andrew house and injuring four others. Nbcs c tell us more about exactly what went down last night and how did police and fbi track him down. We have to thank Law Enforcement officials for their work. Reporter it was an army of officials, local and federal, from alcohol, tuberculosit b to firearms. As we go to our second picture over here, you can see not far from me where theyve set up a command post. This is the area along i35 on the northbound lane where the suspect was driving. And apparently was being followed by the authorities. At one point or another, he decided to try to cut off the interstate and go oar to the frontage road but he wound up inside a ditch. Officers were there. The car was stuck in the ditch. As the s. W. A. T. Team began to approach, they had to wait a little time for the s. W. A. T. Team to get there, apparently the 24yearold suspect inside the vehicle detonated a bomb, killing himself. Nonetheless, one of the officers at the scene did fire into the car. Its unclear whether the suspect died as a result of the bomb explosion or whether it was a result of the officer firing that shot. That is still being investigated. Meantime, as youre wondering how this all was figured out, it turns out that it may be these images that were looking at right here. It was two days ago now that somebody went into the fedex building in austin. One of those dropoff centers. And this appears to be the 24yearold suspect walking in. As you see these images, they show somebody who may have dyed his hair or is wearing some sort of wig. Nonetheless, its the work for the information authorities needed. I was at that fedex building. There were at least nine security cameras in there. Its quite obvious the suspect would have known he would have been on camera but nonetheless dropped off two packages. One of them exploded on the Conveyor Belt about 60 miles south of austin, in schertz, texas. That was on a Conveyor Belt in a fedex sorting facility. Then there was another package that was isolated because they believed it too may have been a bomb at another sorting facility closer to austin. With those pictures, with these packages, with tracking information, the authorities were able to determine who they believed the suspect was. But there was a whole lot more investigation going on other than just the tracking information. The army of officers who had been here from the federal and local level were using the details of the bombs that had been exploded to look for those very Common Elements that were being used to prepare these bombs, and going to mom and pop stores, going to big box stores, looking at the receipts, tried to determine whether there was a pattern of purchases in and around the austin area. And the fbi was using a highly sophisticated effort with cellphones where they can triangulate different numbers and see if theres any indication of a commonality of this number showing up repeatedly at a place where either the bombs were exploding or where some of the items were purchased. So in a very technical, high end investigation on top of the very specific information provided by those photographs, they were able to then track the suspect. And texas is one of those few states where they actually have an ability to take somebodys image and put it into a computer and use face recognition against all of the drivers licenses that are in the system here to see if they get a match, which also assisted them. But it ends here with a real big question. Why did this 24yearold man decide to do this . And as we heard from the police chief, has he left behind more bombs, not only in this community, but across the nation that could also still result in some mayhem . I mean, it really is stunning that they have the technology, they have the ability to show these images. Kerry, im conflicted, because in these cases i want to give attention to the victims and not the attacker. But what do we know . I know theyre not identifying the suspect. Are you learning any details about him . Reporter we believe were working on a name that were just not putting out there right now because were waiting for the authorities to confirm it. We believe this 24yearold man lived about nine miles from here, not too far from where his parents live. And about thats about what i have at this point. There may be some more details that will be forthcoming, but i think that once the name is out there officially, then we will probably get more information on who knew what, who suspected what, whether anybody suspected anything, and some details of why somebody would have done this. One of the things that the authorities are going to go through is trying to see if theres any indication of some sort of letter or some sort of note, some sort of anything that explains why he would have done this to begin with. Kerry, i do want to have a better understanding of why this man do it, but ill tell you, im fine with never knowing his name. I want to remember the names of the victims. Thanks, kerry. Jim cavanaugh, two days ago you said hes going to hit again in 24 hours. He did, and now we know how things have turned out. Officers are saying residents should remain vigilant because there could be more harmful packages out there. Do you think that could be the case . You would think parents in austin wake up relieved, but maybe not, if theres more packages out there. Its a caution we have to take. And theyre right to say that. But its probably not so. But i think Everybody Needs to be vigilant for the next few days. The reason i say that is the tempo, the way he was operating with the bombs, i dont think he had time to, you know, produce a lot more bombs. Thats not for sure, though. You have to be careful. Hes likely one bomber, unless hes tied to some group. You know, you live by the bomb, you die by the bomb. Oftentimes, guys like this are a oneoff, the motive is power. Some other motive may surface later. It may even be Something Like agree greed. Ive had cases were theyll come back later and try to extort money after large bombs, even the d. C. Snipers, they sent us a message this said we want 10 million that we can get from any atm in the world. They didnt start out from that motive, with that greed motive, but they laid it over their other power and kill motive. They would have had to stand at the atm for 25 years to get the 25 bills to come out. So their plan wasnt good. They could have come up with a disguise on a computer for Something Like that. This was some exceptional reporting down there by kerry sanders, jay gray, gabe gutierrez, thats really been exceptional. Second, Law Enforcement really gets an a plus for this across the board. Every agency, every cop, every trooper, all the surrounding cities, the bomb squads, great, great work. And fedex. Lets not leave fedex out of this, i think they need a pat on the back for really ramping up quickly and helping Law Enforcement. Google, who responded to a warrant, helped the authorities. And every single citizen in austin who helped, who was watching, you know, gave a tip. Everybody needs some credit here. I like that, working together. It took a village. And luckily they got this guy. Take me through where the investigation goes from here. You worked on the unibomber case, you worked on the atlanta olympic bombings. What happens to the investigation now . Were going to have a slow roll, postblast investigation, on i35. Because the bomber blew himself up, so thats going to be a pretty big mess. Hes got a lot of fragmentations, probably, fragments in his body. Theyll have to do a full postmortem on that. Theyll have to get all the bomb debris out of the car, get it out of the highway. Thats going to take a while. Theyll go to his residence. Thats going to have to be slowly secured by the bomb squad because he could have trip wires and trip devices in there. Theyll want to get in there and do a regular physical search plus a search for his digital media, computers, cellphones, ipads, et cetera, to see if theres anything on there. Then theres the search for, could there possibly be coconspirators or aiders and abetters. That will be a focus of the task force. Theyll be working certainly through the whole week. Theyre trying to establish that. If they can, you know, establish that hes working alone, which is most likely, but its not for sure, then theyll be able to close it down better, because there will be no prosecution, if hes the lone actor. His motive, you know, like i say, its going to be power, reven revenge, possibly greed. Hopefully this chapter is over for austin. Weve seen the work of great Law Enforcement officers this week. Indeed we have. Jim, thank you so, so much for your insight. When we come back, were going to talk about President Trump. Somebody has to help me understand why he congratulated Vladimir Putin for winning an election that the entire world knows was an absolute sham. Despite stern warnings not to do so from his Top National Security team. And how about even if they didnt tell him to do so, you would have thought common sense would. The president can say all day long theres no collusion with russia but youve got to wonder why does he continue to do things to make us wonder why. First, more legal trouble potentially for President Trump. And its not just Stormy Daniels. Now a former playboy playmate wants to share her story, a fact that jimmy fallon thought paints a clear picture. The former playboy playmate named karen mcdougal, she says she had an affair with trump and now shes suing him. You know things are crazy when you hear the president is being sued by a porn star and people go, which one . Get into my car get into my car get outta my dreams get in the backseat, baby get into my car beep, beep, yeah get outta my mind get outta my mind get into my life applebees to go. Order online and get 10 off 30. Now thats eatin good in the neighborhood. Welcome back. Youre watching msnbc. Im stephanie ruhle. Two Law Enforcement sources familiar with the investigation confirm to nbc news that the suspects name in austin, texas, the man who set off those bombs, is marc anthony condit, a 24yearold. We dont know his background. Well get you more. That is the name now being reported. Now lets take you to washington where President Trump called to congratulate Vladimir Putin on winning a fourth term in Office Despite widespread claims by International Groups that the election was absolutely unequivocally no doubt rigged. I had a call with president putin and congratulated him on the victory, his electoral victory. The call had to do also with the fact that we will probably get together in the not too distant future so that we can discuss arms, we can discuss the arms race. Against that backdrop, some of trumps own aides reportedly warned him in all caps not to congratulate putin. And trump did it anyway. I want to bring in nbcs Peter Alexander at the white house. Peter, im utterly confused. Put everything aside, pretend everything is in a vacuum, you know nothing about russia and Robert Mueller. President trump went out of his way to praise putin and not bring up extraordinarily important and controversial topics like the poisoning of a former russian spy for meddling in our own elections, which anyone who is in the know, who is part of the administration, has said, yep, russia is trying to interfere in the next election cycle. And the only thing we heard out of President Trump, and i think it was three times in a oneminute span, well, i believe Vladimir Putin and i are going to see each other very soon, very soon, well see each other very soon, i believe. What gives . Reporter stephanie, its a long pattern of behavior by this president. We heard from Lindsey Graham saying when you dont call out Vladimir Putin, you embolden him. The question for this president , who has gladly criticized others, londons mayor, britains Prime Minister theresa may, the president congratulating Vladimir Putin on winning a new sixyear term despite a warning from his National Security advisers not to. The words do not congratulate were written in all caps inside the president s briefing book. He ignored instructions that he condemn the recent poisoning of a former russian spy in britain. Whats interesting is the white house has said this has happened, the administration has spoken out about it, but the president cant say it when hes on the phone with putin himself, didnt even bring up russias meddling in the u. S. Election, even though the u. S. Has brought sanctions against several individuals in Vladimir Putins country. President trump woke up attacking the russia probe again in a series of what you likely saw were some typofilled tweets. John mccain blasted the president for the call. The senates top republican, Mitch Mcconnell, he did as well. When i look at a russian election, what i see is the lack of credibility in tallying the results. Calling him wouldnt have been high on my list. Reporter that was Mitch Mcconnell yesterday. Sarah sanders saying the white house cant dictate how other countries operate. The Vice President is supposed to speak today, his remarks peter, what is she talking about . We comment on those things as a world leader all the time. How could she possibly say that . Reporter it was striking to hear her say that. Were spotted to hear from the Vice President later today, if it doesnt get canceled, hes supposed to address the organization of american states, and specifically on the topic of venezuela, the humanitarian crisis there, expected to call them out, to hold free and fair elections. So this didnt make a lot of sense to us, frankly. Its a pattern thats existed in the past. Obama did it, the Bush Administration did it, they called on other countries to hold free and fair elections. Frankly, sometimes there was criticism that obama didnt go further because the fear was that it would look like they were propping up the protesters, civilian, young protesters in places like iran. But they certainly said it in places like kenya and congo and iran and cuba. So this i think was a striking moment. Im utterly confused. The white house sees no issue in the president calling out nordstrom, a retailer, a publicly traded company, when they decided to carry less of ivanka trumps spring line, no issue there, but it would be an issue to weigh in on undemocratic, unfair elections that happen across the world. Thats a confusing one to me. Maybe Sarah Sanders can help me out there. Peter, please go inside, its snowing out there. I want to bring my panel in, it is a good one. Betry woodruff in the daily beast, and bill cohen, special correspondent for vanity fair. Betsy, whats the bigger deal, that President Trump congratulated putin or that he seemed to go against his own teams very specific all caps warning that of course then got leaked out . Its hard to even answer that question. Go for it. Theres something darkly ironic about the fact that this president is willing to congratulate Vladimir Putin on his election at the same time that he and his allies vociferous vociferously say putin is meddling in elections in the United States. One of the vital things about this Washington Post reporting is that we even know about this all caps note written on the president s briefing. Its a tiny group of people who had access to this information. This reporting means at least one person in that group thought something has gone very wrong and the American Public needs to know about it. Thats quite telling. See, that is an excellent point, because i saw last night on twitter, Ari Fleischer was saying how upsetting it was that someone would leak Something Like this out. Is it upsetting that someone would leak it or is it upsetting that someone that close to the president sees this as that big of a deal that they need to alert the public . Im actually encouraged that somebody that close to the president felt strongly enough that they had to get this out. Because i have to say this, stephanie, and this is going to sound a little bit nutty, but i think this may be the lowest point yet in the trump presidency, because to be told by your advisers, do not congratulate, in capital letters, and then have a call with Vladimir Putin where you great him on a fixed election victory, i dont even understand what thats about. Theres obviously something that we all have been talking about for months that russians have on donald trump, whether its related to money or sex, i dont know, or both. But theres something there. Because how could you be the president of the United States and congratulate a dictator on a regulated electi rigged election . Betsy, to say trump won fair and square, Robert Mueller has given us no evidence, for people in that camp, you can turn to them and say, after President Trump won, mike flynn was on the phone with russians, they did nothing to push more sanctions. Even now, the president was dragged, after the deadline, to put in place these sanctions, and he continues to never speak out against Vladimir Putin. Originally Rex Tillerson supported theresa may on saying that the poisoning, russia was to blame for the poisoning when Sarah Huckabee sanders said we just dont know yet, and now we have this. Does the president and his legal team not realize that all of these breadcrumbs make even those who support the president scratch their said and say, buddy, whats the deal with putin . The president and his legal team are deeply concerned about the prospect of trump himself having to sit down for an interview with bob mueller. I can tell you its something his lawyers do not relish. Theyve been in negotiations with muellers team for quite some time, and for very understandable reasons arent excited about the idea for the president going in for that interview. Thats part of reason were seeing trump become so surprisingly critical of the Mueller Probe over the last few days. At the same time, however, if you were to make a group of people who think mueller is on to something, that group would include the staff at the treasury department, who put 13 russians who mueller indicted for meddling in the election on their list of sanctioned russians. If you want to argue that mueller is fake news or that hes a witch hunt, you have to make that argument to the political appointees that trump himself installed at treasury. Its really a fascinating, unusual situation. I wonder about the treasury secretary, steve mnuchin, who was with President Trump throughout the campaign, remember when they were working with Cambridge Analytica. Ive got to get this in quickly. I need to share what former cia director john brennan told willie geist this morning. Do you believe somehow hes in debt to the president of russia . I think hes afraid of the president of russia. Why . Well, one can speculate as to why, the russians may have something on him personally, that they could always roll out and make his life more difficult. The russians have had long experience with mr. Trump, and may have things that they could expose. Something personal, perhaps . Perhaps. Perhaps. Uhoh. Occams razor. The most obvious thing has to be the thing that it is. Its so clear at this point that Vladimir Putin and his associates, somebody has something on donald trump. Theres no other reason he would be so praiseworthy and continuously be so essentially, as john brennan said, afraid of john pu putin and what he has over him. Hopefully Robert Mueller can help figure it out and share it with us. Occams razor. Who is the puppet . Next, the company that harvested data from millions of facebook users suspends its ceo after another undercover video is released where he touts his close relationship with, guess who, President Trump. At the same time, facebook is trying to do damage control. Theyre trying but why are Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg nowhere to be seen . Ive heard zuck is going to speak today, ill believe it when i see it. The former leader of the American Nazi Party has won in illinois, arthur jones ran unopposed. Cambridge analytica secretly obtained data from facebook. There is new video of Cambridge Analytica ceo alexander nix, who has now been Cambridge Analytica. And nbcs uk partner channel 4 news has released a new batch of clips from its hidden camera interview with nix in which he brags about the scale of his work for the trump campaign. Have you met mr. Trump . Many times. All the searches, all the data, all the analytics, all the targeting. As for facebook, lawmakers on the hill will Grill Company representatives for the second day today, demanding answers on how Cambridge Analytica was able to obtain private information from tens of millions of facebook users. Two Company Officials lawmakers will not be meeting with . The only two the world has known for all these years, the two who have run victory laps and been the public face of the company, ceo Mark Zuckerberg and coo Sheryl Sandberg, both have yet to lean into this and make a statement on the massive data breach. According to axios, zuckerberg is expected to break his silence in the next 24 hours. I want to bring in tony rom, and back with me, betsy woodruff. Tony, axios says Mark Zuckerbergs remarks today will be aimed at rebuilding trust. Yesterday it was top building all day, there was going to be an all hands meeting for all facebook employees to voice their concerns, ask questions. And i get the meeting was led by a lawyer, given how complicated this is. But it was all hands with no heads. Sheryl and mark nowhere to be seen. Rebuilding trust seems like a phrase Like Community engagement. This aint about community engagement. This is serious business. All hands is a great way to describe the situation at facebook right now because this is a serious issue for the company. Look at its stock price, its fluctuated pretty dramatically, its lost billions of dollars as a result of the reports about Cambridge Analytica. But, you know, theres mounting pressure on capitol hill right now for Mark Zuckerberg to be the one that shows up and answers questions from lawmakers. Theyll send top aides to brief members of congress and their staff about what exactly happened and what data landed in the hands of Cambridge Analytica. Youre hearing member after member saying its time for Mark Zuckerberg to testify. Facebook has refused to say whether it will make him available for questioning. Axios has reported that behind the scenes zuckerberg is having detailed conversations with project engineers and seeing what can be done to make facebook more secure. Baloney. They had this relationship with Cambridge Analytica for years. This incident is years old. Zuckerberg is well aware of how this Company Operates because facebook itself collects our personal data and uses it to try to get advertisers, brands, and all sorts of companies to buy into it. So what are the i mean, this is a nonsense narrative, to say zuckerberg is talking to engineers. Well, remember exactly how we got here. Cambridge analytica was working with a researcher who put together an app. That app was essentially a personality quiz. About 270,000 users on facebook used that app. And in the process of using it, they consented to have information about their friends turned over to Cambridge Analytica. That was a thing that many app developers, many Third Party App developers took advantage of at facebook until facebook changed its policy in 2014 and 2015. So to your point, advertisers, and even folks working with president Barack Obamas campaign back in the day, were taking advantage of some of these data gathering tools that are no longer in effect at facebook. But there are some legal issues at stake here. Remember, the federal trade commission brokered a settlement with facebook in 2011 for essentially misleading consumers about its privacy practices. Now because of the allegations with Cambridge Analytica, the ftc has reopened that probe to see if facebook violated the settlement. If it finds that it has, well be talking about millions and millions of dollars in fines levied on facebook in the next several months. Betsy, you have new reporting on the hacked emails. On july 29th, a few days before President Trump essentially asked the russians to release hacked material from Hillary Clintons campaign, one Cambridge Analytica staffer emailed a group of people on a chain discussing some of the work that they were doing, essentially celebrating these hacks and saying they hope hacks continue and they hoped there would be more information released that would increasingly fracture Hillary Clintons base. So Cambridge Analytica understood very much and relevarelis relishrelis relished the way Democratic Party politics were playing out. Its something that was not a mystery to them. The Cambridge Analytica piece of this story is obviously vital, but as tony was saying, facebook is going through a major crisis. To speak to a point you made earlier, facebook has said they wont necessarily make zuckerberg available to testify to congress. Thats also baloney. Congress has subpoena power. If Chuck Grassley wants to subpoena zuckerberg to testify, they could. Facebook doesnt get to decide whether or not their executives sit down in front of leaders in washington. One thing thats interesting, that speaks to the power of these tech companies, i believe it was last year there was a big congressional hearing about the Technology Companies and the way that they interacted with russian meddling and none of their ceos were there, they sent in their lawyers. They sent people, Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg are household names. Most americans know exactly who they are and who their faces are. We were all excited for that testimony last year. And they were people weve never seen or heard of. While the white house is sort of distancing itself from Cambridge Analytica, most people have never even heard Jared Kushner speak, the one interview i recall him doing last year with forbes magazine, he was happy to say how closely they worked with Cambridge Analytica on what a good job they did. Remember that. Guys, thank you. Were going to leave it there. President trump, hes facing mounting legal pressure this morning, having nothing to do with Cambridge Analytica, having nothing to do with Robert Mueller. It has to do with a former porn star, a former playmate, and an apprentice contestant. Karen mcdougal suing the Parent Company of the National Inquirer over details of an alleged affair with donald trump. The National Inquirer is owned by david pecker, a long time friend of President Trump. Then the lawsuit filed by Summer Zervos can move forward. And new details from Stormy Daniels and a polygraph exam. Her lawyer has confirmed this photo of ms. Daniels, Stormy Daniels. Her real name is stephanie clifford. It was taken in 2011 during a Lie Detector Test that nbc has obtained. It found a 99 probability that clifford was telling the truth for two questions about having a sexual affair with trump back in 2006. The white house and President Trumps lawyers have denied any claims of trump having affairs with either mcdougal or daniels. Msnbc legal analyst katie phang joins me now. Stormy daniels, Vladimir Putin, and ivanka trump are the only three people i never see the president speak out against. Its stunning to me. It seems like there is a lot of trouble brewing for President Trump. But in actuality, besides these being damning headlines, how much of a problem is it . So from a legal perspective, theres a world of hurt thats about to be unleashed on donald trump. And why . Because each and every one of these women has legal claims that are going to be already tried in the court of public opinion, as we already know, and that will eventually make it before a judge, before perhaps an arbitration panel, and eventually one of these women is going to get through Donald Trumps defensive armor and maybe, just maybe, donald trump will have to sit for a deposition that may become public and im have to answer questions but why he lied about these relationships. Hes defamed Summer Zervos character. Its matter of when and not if. At the end of the day, all of these allegations are about sexual misconduct. The truth is, in the court of public opinion, american forgave him last year. We knew that it was President Trumps voice on that access Hollywood Tape and people stood by him. Family values, evangelical christians stood by him, whether because they liked him or they felt the nomination of neil gorsuch or other judges was more important. In terms of the court of public opinion, unfortunately the United States has said aokay. Theyve said aokay in terms of, well give him a mulligan. But the reason this becomes an even more troubling proposition, if there were Campaign Finance violations that occurred through the 130,000 paid to Stormy Daniels or the 150,000 paid to Karen Mcdougals lawyer which eventually made it to the Parent Company of the National Inquirer, those could implicate Campaign Finance violations. And this is an inference im going to draw. You may forgive that behavior by donald trump. But will you forgive really, really bad behavior . Stormy daniels sat for this polygraph in 2011. Ive been asked repeatedly, why would questions positied to her of the nature of whether she had unprotected sex with donald trump . 99 probability that she was telling the truth. If you look at the Settlement Agreement between Stormy Daniels and donald trump, it addresses as confidential information paternity issues. Im not trying to be salacious, im drawing an inference. The reason im saying this to you is, if you are a supporter of donald trump, where does it stop for you . From a legal standpoint, it may keep on going. The facts may come out on sundays 60 minutes interview. We have seen no moves in a legal courtroom to stop this before sunday. Just maybe well hear more information on sunday. Katie, i dont even know if were out of time, but im unwilling to talk about unprotected sex with donald trump before 10 00 a. M. When i only have tea in my mug. Sorry, stephanie. We know its no way to run a government, is why people want to change the system. But alas here we are. We heard both lead ersz flooding the idea of passing a six spending bill. Which breaks me. Would you support that idea . Im not going to support shutting down the government. The people that get hurt are the federal workers and people that cant get services they need. We meed to keep the government open and do a better job. I want to change topics. President trump on the phone with Vladimir Putin yesterday, congratulated him for his win. Despite reports aids warned him in all caps, do not congratulate him. We can no longer say, he didnt know any better hes not a politician. Whats your thought . Obviously theres no obviously here.
