Right. New calls for the justice in the investigation of Michael Browns death. Authorities in ferguson, missouri decided earlier today not to reveal the name of the officer who shot and killed the unarmed teenager on saturday. Due to threats received on social media, nbcs john yang interviewed the ferguson chief of police earlier today. It went out over social media that the officer involved was michael white. It was not. Michael white was not involved in this incident at all. However Death Threats started to come in right away across the country and based on that and that is one reason why officer safety is a reason that we can delay and we think its prudent that we do that. Officers say theres no timetable for the release of the name. And the decision is up to chief jackson and city authorities. The officer is on paid leave. Witnesses say Michael Browns body was on the street for some time after he was shot. An autopsy has been completed but the medical Examiners Office is not releasing details. Either the Prosecutors Office or st. Louis county police will determine whether or not they will release any information on the autopsy. Police are brace s for more protests expected today. Lets than 24 hours after s. W. A. T. Teams fired tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters during a second night of violate demonstration last night. The fbi has officially opened an investigation into the shooting, looking for potential civil rights violation. Eric holder says attorneys from the Justice Department will work with fbi agents and hell receive regular updates. He released this statement monday night. The federal investigation will supplement rather than supplant the inquiry by local authorities. At every step we will work with the local investigators who should be prepared to complete a thorough, fair investigation in their own right. A short time ago president obama released this statement. The death of Michael Brown is heartbreaking and michelle and i send our deepest condolences to his family and community at this very difficult time. As attorney general holder has indicated, the department of justice is investigating the situation along with local officials and they will continue to direct resources to the case as needed. I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions but as details unfold, i urge everyone in ferguson, missouri and across the country to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals not in a way that wounds. Thats what michael and his family and our Broader Community deserve. The sensitivity can be observed over social media. The New York Times highlighted the eruption it has caused. Michael browns family is calling for justice and peace. The refer enal sharpton spoke to Michael Browns family and heart broken mother was searching for answers on plik nation monday night. Nothing, nothing, nobody can say can ever explain to me that he provoked this, that he wanted this or asked for this. No, not my son. No crime in walking down a street. No crime. Leslie mcspadden went on to describe her son as a gentle giant, who did not deserve the treatment. Reverend al sharpton, traveled to ferguson missouri and met with them earlier this morning. Earlier today a News Conference was held with the family on the stairs of the old courthouse in st. Louis, missouri. He relaid a message of peace that leslie mcspaddens, Michael Browns mother referred to him as a gentle giant. No one has the right to take their childs name and drag it through the mud because youre angry. To become violent in Michael Browns name is to betray the gentle giant that he was. Dont be so angry [ applause ] dont be so angry that you distort the image of who his mother and father told us he was. At 8 00 p. M. Eastern, a forum will be held at christ King United Church of christ where ferguson mayor James Knowles the third and chief jackson are expected to be on hand to answer questions. Joining me now is jermaine lee. Whats the feeling and vibe and senation on the ground right now . I was in another town, sanford florida in the wake of a killing of an unarmed black man. Tension had been boiling over for years. It is not dissimilar from some situation. This is a collection of small communities under the thumb of what they allege is Police Abuses and long history of disrust within the community. Michael browns killing tipped it over and lifted the lid off the pot. Young people disaffected are upset. It spilled over into violence. The thing now where do they go from here . We talk about resources and talk about issues in the schools, its no different than detroit or chicago or camden, new jersey. Here in this town of st. Louis that does not have a history of allowing violence to unif you recall in response to these issues, we see it here. People are still angry and now its where do they go from here. Is it fair for people and we heard the reverend al sharpton talk about violence would be smir krch this young m. It has to be checked and challenged, is it fair to blame people who once you cut off their leg, so to speak, they cant walk or the voicelessness that they felt, is there a sense that people have to speak in this way or is it the violence will be curtailed because they respect what reverend sharpton said . I think some would say to move the ball in any direction, wonder whether violence is the answer at all. When people dont have the tools and agency or wherewithal or any other path to express themselves in any other way, it leads to violence. When you talk to young people i talked to several over the past few days, no one is coming down to talk to them and address their needs, when its time to set it off in the way they did, theres no other reaction from the people. We have seen a gathering with reverend al sharpton and other Community Leaders and folks down here say they havent talked to them. Im not sure we can request whether or not it was right or wrong or justified. But people feel theres no other tool or agency. Wheres the leadership there . It seems to be a gulf opening up between younger generations fz africanamericans and others who feel the older generation has not addressed them and older generation wants to abide by the law in order to investigate this with in proper fashion. Wheres the gap down there in terms of leadership . Reporter the gap is huge. Im not sure how much is in leadership. When we look at the generational gap, those who came a generation or two before this, they had a framework, you know how to protest. You can assemble a certain kind of way. These young people never had that. While a whole generation and whole class of middle class black folks moved in and filled churches. Generations of young people still suffering and struggling without framework and how to address these disparities and issues. You spoke with dorian johnson, a friend of Michael Brown who said he stood feet away as a Police Officer shot and killed the unarmed teen. What stands out to you most after speaking to him . I think after speaking to him, i think part of it is a lot of questions were kind of answered. Theres so much mystery around this case. The fact that police say that theres a physical altercation and at least one gunshot was fired from within the car, johnson says once the police encountered them, that he grabbed Michael Brown by his throat and fired the first gunshot seated in his patrol car. As the two ran, the officer followed and fired several more shots, at least once striking him in the back. I think the fact this all began with an order as dorian said to get the f on the sidewalk from the Police Officer, it seemed this whole encounter could have been avoided. We dont know all of the facts, the local authorities are conducting their investigation. It is pretty as tounded it started with an order do you and more violence and anger to be expressed tonight . Caller i dont know how i would characterize yet but i dont think its over yet. Day by day things seem to be cooling off but the anger just under the surface and whole generation of young people making noise and taking action in the best way they know how, im not sure were going to see this end any time soon. Thank you so much. Let me bring in dr. James peterson. Lets pick right up, James Peterson when he left off. Theres a tremendous disparity going on, black people who felt they were voiceless and left alone so many decades then when they erupt because of mistreatment they are then blamed for their own behavior and implicitly suggesting that that behavior is why the young man got shot in the first place. How do those who want to maintain the peace avoid that kind of trap falling into that which implicitly blames the people they claim to want to help . I think first and foremost, its for us to be outraged at the response to the murder of Michael Brown doesnt make a lot of sense to me. The outrage needs to be directed at the source. They can handle the riot and stop the riot and control the riot, but the real question, can we get our criminal Justice System and get these Police Departments to acknowledge the humanity of black and brown folks . I think our energy needs to be focused on that. Its not rioting is a good thing. Mlk said rioting is the language of the o pressed and those who are silenced and those young people in that community have been o press oppressed and silenced and think about the terror in that community. The body was laying there for hours. That terrorizes a community when the police misabuse their power and when it reaches the peak the way it has in ferguson, those communities have been terrorized for a long time. Think about the violence enacted upon the communities, the conditions in which they are living and ways in which has emblem tiesed by the murder of Michael Brown. To be talking about the riot for me personally, its a red herring. You know, yesterday you mentioned this and i want to underscore this, you talked about the dehumanizing impact of the per ceptual lens. Theres been study after study done talking about the dehumanizing impact seeing black kids not quite as innocent as white kids and depriving them of their human status. There are scores of studies. The one that stands out most to me is a one that Rosa Clemente and those at the Grass Roots Organization did that looks at the cycle of violence every 28 hours or so were seeing unarmed black and brown young People Killed either by vigilantes or law enforcement. That means this is systemic and getting out of control and has been out of control for some time. Whats required, the predicate to that kind of sustained systemic violence in our community, the predicate to that is the sort of sense of dehumanization, there have been lots of social psychological studies that sort of underscore this, not just in the communities and among mainstream folk but also amongst Police Forces that young black boys are seen as men. They are robbed of their innocence by people looking at them and thinking of them as being menacing. The implicit bias test reveals all of the biases, you put that in the hands of someone who has a gun weve got to wrestle with the deeper and more sustained challenges here. Thinking and talking about the response and rioting and unrest, to me seems to be a distraction from what the real situation, what the real problem is. Do you think releasing the name of the officer who fired shots will change the people of ferguson . Thats very tricky. Its interesting for them to talk about Death Threats of Police Officers when were talking about the death and murder of a young man right now. And so again we have to stay focused, but i dont know if releasing this Police Officers name is anything that we should necessarily be concerned about. The individual here is not the problem. Im not exxon rating him, but as system and structures within the system that we have to challenge and wrestle with and overturn. Finally, do you think cases like this involving the death of young unarmed black men are a, on the rise, if they are on the rise, what does that say about the necessity to be vigilant in looking at all of the sources of our hurt and oppression unleashed on these young men, black boys and black girls as well . Its not quite clear its on the rise. Certainly if were were to compartmentalize things like stand your ground defenses and justify fibl homicides, that is on the rise because the policy essentially allows people to commit murder and be free from blame. What we do know is its sustained, that the violence in this way, state violence and also socalled vigilante violence in our communities has been sustained over time. And we have to think structural about how to address it. I hope people can stay focused on the systemic challenges here and all of the riots and rallying and all of those things to me are somewhat a distraction. We have to stay focused on changing how Police Police our communities and work with the ways in which people are uninformed about certain kinds of implicit biases and thats the long hard work. We need neighborhood policing and Community Police partnerships and long hard work. There are no easy answers and no simple way of resolving these challenges. Dr. James peterson, thank you for your time. We look at the profound impact Robin Williams had on other comedians. North carolina courts uphold the states restrictive voting laws. We not only have teams dedicated to the food industry, were also part of ge, a company thats built hundreds of factories. So we could bring in experts to help kings hawaiian make sense of transportation routes, supply chains, labor pools, and zoning to help them make the right decision. North carolina new election law will remain in effect despite ongoing legal attempts to stop it. The state Legislature Passed the most regressive Voting Rights law ever. North carolina could swing the senate this year. North carolina courts uphold the states restrictive voting laws. Part of the new voter law impact the november elections, including a 7day reduction in the early voting period. The naacp says in 2012 these laws are making it harder for americans to have a voice in our democracy. The naacp is saying tonight the legal team is mobilizing and plans to challenge the state again in court next summer. The greatest weapon against the suppression is voter education. Joining me now is allison riggs. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. How restrictive are the new voting laws. We know that they are to tamp down on what they see as exploitation of the process and all kinds of fraud. What is the consequence here . Unprecedented. These provisions over the last two decades have opened political participation in North Carolina and have gone towards remedying what the history of discrimination in our state has left us with. And undoing all of that, all at once and so abruptly is going to prove to be enormously challenging for voters of color, for young voters and elderly and people who lack transportation options. Right, and so those are the groups that will be impacted most by these voting restrictions especially on early voting and registration. But some say they are skeptical, like theres no such thing as in this day in age we would dare target africanamericans or senior citizens. How do you substantiate the claim that these restrictions are racially charged, generationally charged and even perhaps in some case geographically charged . We presented the legislature with that evidence during the legislative process last year. We provided documentation of how africanamerican voters disproportionately use early voting and disproportionately use sameday registration and out of precinct voting. In fact in the decision on friday, the court recognized that africanamerican voters will be disproportionately affected by the changes. They recognize it but what . It wasnt enough to spur them on to so to speak address the instability or the illegality of these processes . Where we are at the proceedings, we were just asking for a preliminary injunction so the challenge provisions wouldnt go into effect in november. Theres a heightened standard for what you have to prove to get a preliminary injunction. The preliminary injunction was denied. But we have a year before trial in which to develop more evidence and to correct the errors of law that underpinned the denial of the preliminary injunction on friday. How does the rollback of Voting Rights act affect this decision in North Carolina . It makes clear that the loss of section five of the Voting Rights act was a devastating blow to minority voting abilities. This is a law that everyone is in disagreement, the state as well, the department of justice would have never precleared this monster bill in light of the data presented during the legislative process about the effect on protected voters. So its a stark reminder that we have made progress in some places but were not there yet. What about those groups that say, look, were going to go to the courts but the courts are constantly and, you know relentlessly turning us down. We have no hope that the court will be if you will, neutral enough to intervene on our behalf. What do groups do . Do they continue to look for the right federal court and right District Court and right local court to make a ruling in their favor . I think its always a multipronged approach. The courts have never whenever you file these kinds of lawsuits, the courts have never been an xlut guarantee. What we have seen in North Carolina, vigorous fighting in the courts, vigorous advocacy and demonstrations in the streets and on the plaza, general assembly. Voters are not going to support this. Early voting is enormously popular in North Carolina. Election Officials Say it saves money. It makes voting much more accessible to those who have other problems. I think we keep doing what were doing in the courts and we keep mobilizing and pushing back against the people who are passing these kinds of restrictive policies. The voter i. D. Requirement doesnt go into effect in 2016 with North Carolina yans right there on the spot, since youre there, keep up the fight . Absolutely. Were seeing issues with the way the i. D. Information is being spread, voters being confused. Election officials thinking they had the right to ask for i. D. Already. Were cognizant of whats going on in other states around the country. The oscar winner was found dead in his California Home on monday. Earlier today the marin county sheriff had the latest on the autopsy. The forensic examination conducted by dr. Cohen did not reveal any injuries indicating mr. Williams had been in a struggle or physical altercation prior to him being located deceased. The preliminary and again i say preliminary results of the forensic examination revealed supporting physical signs that mr. Williams life ended from asphyxia due to hanging. Everyone from politicians to performers have paid tribute to the master of stage and screen. Each of us has a favorite Robin Williams role, a favorite Robin Williams moment. He reached audiences across the world but the way he touched his fellow comedians cannot be overstated. Friend and entertaining Billy Crystal said simply there are no words. One comedian reflected on her time doing standup in the late 80s, one late night set brought the unexpected break she needed. Sitting in the audience was Robin Williams and had career had already taken off to Epic Proportions but just there to watch that night. He laughed the hardest in the crowd and approached the comic to tell her to keep going. That comedian joins me now, liz winsted has her take on the comedic titans passing. Tell us the story. Bragging rights that came, i probably was about three years into standup. I started out in minneapolis. I moved to San Francisco. My first place to move like out of my hometown. I was living with three other comics in this crappy apartment in San Francisco and doing one nighters. I moved to San Francisco but i wasnt getting a whole lot of gigs in the city of i was getting the 75 to 125 gig two hours outside the city at some horrible bar. So i did that gig with my roommate alex and it was just awful. We made it through and went to the city zoo, which was a great club where all comics would gather, everybody would just go to the zoo and it was the best workout room in San Francisco. That night robin was in the audience, i didnt know. The guy hosting the night said you want to go up and do a set . I kind of want to rant about this horrible hell gig i just did. I was going on and talking about it. This guy was laughing really loud. Dude, a this is not funny and i dont know why youre going on. Whoa, you sound like mork, which is making this even worse. Then hes laughing louder. Theres that annoying mork laugh again. I would do the jokes and get off stage and audience is laughing hard. Why is everyone laughing really hard . I wasnt that funny. Go out to smoke a cigarette and this old dude comes out, youre hilarious and behind him was a guy who was like, you were really funny and i look, oh, my god, not only do you sound like mork, you are mork. Wow. So his manager said, i book comedians youre great and book them for hbo and were doing a comedy special called women of the night. I was like, stunned, theres Robin Williams and guy and just said you should be doing women of the night. Are you saying i should quit comedy and become a hooker . I dont know what youre saying. One night stands . Exactly. The next year i was on. It was robin loved comedy. He was at the zoo and clubs in San Francisco all the time. My story i dont think is unique. Not like i was friends with him really. He helped me, youre funny, heres my manager, go. Everybody doesnt do that. A lot of young comedians and older women and men, they dont help younger comedians. I mean, what was unique about him in that regard . I think there was he loved the art form and the craft like nobodys business. And i think that he didnt just love doing it, i think he loved watching other people do it. Any comic will tell you its really hard to be a comedy fan when youre a comic because you always analyze material and nod a lot, nod and somebody says that guy is great or that woman is great. When somebody is genuinely laughing, like he really wanted that to be out there. He wanted the best comics to be able to succeed. That part was pretty amazing. My phone blew up last night from other comics, kind of regailing me, saying i heard from robin last week and he was going through this thing and he would text me all the time to ask how i was doing. A lot of times people forget comics are very good at making sure everybody else is doing okay and not checking in with themselves a lot. Tell us about that. Its almost a stereo typical thing to say that great comedic artists draw from a whirlwind of depression and hurt and anger and transmute it into something that saves the rest of us. But sometimes it doesnt save them. When you can take pain and transfer that into Something Else so that i as comic can make you feel better about whats going on with you, it still stays with you. Youre not necessarily working out your things, youre working through them through a lens that somebody else can relate to. And i think that the stage can be a place for a lot of people who do comedy where you feel free. Right, right. Youll see these havens of comedy clubs and see exist for a reason, where you gather there with other people and other souls all the time. Well, at least he was honest about struggling with Substance Abuse and some of the depression. How does the comedic Community Deal with depression and Substance Abuse . I mean, how do you address how are those issues addressed within the comedic community . If youre the person that makes everybody laugh and youre really fun, people might enable you to keep being that person. If youre fun outward and great and intoxicating as a human being and thats not just comics but anybody, you can convince people to keep going with you. And so i think that people deal with it in a lot of ways, people have to realize that you arent your humor and talent doesnt come from your pain. Thats a big mistake a lot of comics make. It comes from examining your pain and being able to talk about it but doesnt come from letting the pain sit. Once you learn that as a comic, its easier and as a human, when i say comic, i mean human, you can work it out that way. I think that thats a critical difference you made there, not the pain itself but the examination of the pain and what lessons it might teach. What do you think do you think his death, as unfortunate and tragic as it is, change anything about discussions about Mental Health in general . I certainly couldnt predict that. What i do hope is that people do understand that you need to talk about depression and Mental Health without stigma. You need to stop saying things like he had demons or when you hear the terms that go with people dealing with just struggling with this particular disease, it is like anything else. It is something that you work with and live with. Sometimes you never work out of it but you learn to manage it just like anything else. I think we need to start having conversations that allow people to not be afraid. The biggest thing about depression and Mental Health is, if you suffer from depression, its hard to reach out because you dont want to bring to the people you love. How do you say can you help me when youre feeling like i dont know if i deserve the help . To be able to reach out to somebody and say, i want to know your pain, i think it really important. The United States is continuing the air Strike Campaign in iraq. Earlier today a u. S. Drone successfully struck and destroyed an isis mortar position north of the sinjar mountains. Isis was firing on Kurdish Forces firing on displaced ethnic minorities in the area. The situation for tens of thousands of trapped ethnic minorities on the mountain is dire. The military sent more than 120 additional u. S. Military adviserers to iraq to specifically assess the ongoing crisis. Sources tell nbc news the advisers will attempt to determine if and how tens of thousands of people still trapped on the mountain can be safely brought down. Itns john ervine went on a mission to rescue ethnic minorities stranded on the mountain. Its a desperate situation. Thousands of yazidis are still stranded up here on what is a mile high hell, a place where clean Drinking Water is a rare and glistening prize. The helicopter crew tried to get people to keep their distance but they wouldnt be shood away. They had been through too much. A safe havens go this mountain top really is the devils alternative. Its baking hot and bone dry. Survival depends on these air drops. Sadly, redemption from the skies has come too late for many of their kith and kin. President obama praised the designation of a new Prime Minister in iraq. The United States hopes iraq can form a new, more inclusive government. This comes as republicans are calling air strikes insufficient and calling for military action in syria. Joining he now is iraq war veteran and chairman of vote vets. Org john vote. Lets get to the brass tacks and knuckles. You were an adviser last time. All the other experts and talking from a distance, you were there on the ground, boots down. Whats your assessment of whats going on now and the wisdom of our current trajectory there . The president was right to strike. There was no way to stop the advance of isis to erbil. Erbil was under no threat. We said if you go to erbil you can take the equipment off and walk around. Thats where the american consulate was. There was no way we could have a benghazi situation. The other issue is the kurds were great. We worked with them time and again. They are true allies. The situation with the yazidis is complicated. They are a minority sect. They dont have a dog in the fight. They have been good to the americans. They are way out in sinjar near the syrian border. The issue to give them relief is hard. They fall outside the blanket of protection of the pershmega. We didnt train them proofficially because the Central Government was concerned with making them so strong they could take back kurdish territory in kirkuk. The president has armed them and put advisers back in there. We need advisers to get to sinjar to relieve the yazidi or they will continue to have issues. Now barzagni called in a kurdish organization out of syria to relieve civilians there. What do you think of the president s strategy. He said well do targeted air strikes, send advisers over. We want boots on the ground. Not on the ground there but others are arguing like john mccain and Lindsey Graham that not only should we have boots on the ground but be i attacking in syria. Whats your sons . I cant believe john mccain. Vote vets do not give weapons to people on the other side of the border. They fight together. There was no coordination of sunni, iraqi or iraqi and syrian groups. Syrians and iraqis were struck on the border and jihadists that came over. What john mccain is saying, we should have armed moderates earlier. There is no way the moderate insurgents would have turned on isis. It is crazy of john mccain to think now that we can strike at syria. He essentially wants to shoot the same people he gave weapons to last year. I have always been against isis in syria but have never been a fan of the insurgency. John mccain went to syria, met with them, took pictures with them. The only thing john mccain knows is he wants to fight everybody. Both sides of the war. Hes been wrong about every major Foreign Policy decision since beirut. Its appalling. Hillary clinton has weighed in here. Ive got to ask what you think of what shes been saying. I love Hillary Clinton. Shes one of the smartest people out there. This is the dumbest thing i have heard her say. Very bright woman. We had advisers on the ground. Two divisions on the ground. The second took mosul. The other took everything else. Everything is in the hands of isis. Those divisions were overrun. We trained peshmerga out there. To think they would have stood a chance is preposterous. It would be more fuel on the fire. The large problem for the president is to look at syria policy where both sides are bad. To think we should add more fuel to the fire, we have to get rid of malaki. Hes finally out. Does he have to go ffr before change happens . Before meaningful change happens. We have prevented kurd stan being overrun. The problem in iraq is sunni minority representation. Once we left iraq malaki purged the military of sunnis. Hes continued to do it. That led to this sunni uprise. Nothing to do with u. S. Forces leaving. Everything to do with al malaki treating the sunni minority. Thats the ed show. Im in for ed schultz. Politics nation with reverend al sharpton starts now. Good evening, rev. Good evening, dr. Dyson. Thanks to you for tuning in. Developing news tonight from st. Louis, missouri where a heartbroken community is still searching for answers in Michael Browns death.
