Outbreak grows, as the press secretary and two deputies also test positive for the virus. The question, sad question is, whos next . And there now will be plexiglass separating mike pence and Kamala Harris at tomorrows Vice President ial debate. Question is, why did mike pence oppose it . It is way too early for this. Good morning, and welcome to way too early, the show that really cant believe its only tuesday. I am kasie hunt on this october 6th, and we will start with the news. President trump is now back at the white house after spending three nights at Walter Reed Medical Center with coronavirus. It was a highly choreographed return last night. The president walked out of the hospital around 6 30, right as nightly news was going on the air, and he arrived back at the white house just after 7 00, where he walked across the south lawn, up those exterior stairs, and onto the truman balcony, where he immediately removed his mask there it is and posed for photos. The president gave a thumbs up, said he felt good. But after climbing the stairs, you can see pretty clearly that his breathing was labored. The white house says physica access to the president will be significantly limited and that staff will wear appropriate ppe when theyre near him. Heres what the president s doctor said about the decision to release him from the hospital. Though he may not entirely be out of the woods yet, the team and i agree that all our evaluations, and most importantly, his clinical status, support the president s safe return home, where hell be surrounded by worldclass medical care 24 7. Was this something that he pushed for . So, we try to get patients home and out of the hospital as quickly as is safe and reasonable. Every day a patient stays in the hospital unnecessarily is a risk to themselves. And right now, theres nothing thats being done upstairs here that we cant safely conduct down home. We all remain cautiously optimistic and on guard because were in a bit of uncharted territory when it comes to a patient that received the therapies he has so early in the course. So, were looking to this weekend. If we can get through to monday with him remaining the same or improving, better yet, then we will all take that final deep sigh of relief. After receiving stateoftheart treatment for coronavirus at a worldrenowned hospital, President Trump tried to quell fears of the deadly disease that has already claimed the lives of 211,000 americans. Before leaving the hospital yesterday, trump tweeted in part, dont let it dominate your life. We have developed under the Trump Administration some really great drugs and knowledge. I feel better than i did 20 years ago the New York Times notes that Health Experts had hoped that trump would rise to the momentous occasion and help persuade his supporters that Wearing Masks and social distancing are essential. Instead, heres what the white House Doctors response was yesterday. Doctor, the president said dont be afraid of covid. Do you agree with that . Should we not be afraid . I am not going to get into what the president says. Ooh. White House Press SecretaryKayleigh Mcenany and two deputies are just the latest members of the administration to test positive for covid19. Mcenanny made the announcement yesterday with a statement posted on twitter, and he explained in part, after testing negative consistently, including every day since thursday, i tested positive for covid19 on monday morning, while experiencing no symptoms. She went on to say that no members of the White House Press corps are considered close contacts by the white house medical unit. The deputies that also tested positive are chad gilmartin, Principal Assistant press secretary, and caroline leavitt, assistant press secretary. It is unclear when they tested positive. After the announcement, white house reporters asked why mcenany, with a growing number of the president s inner circle testing positive, took off her mask when she answered questions on sunday evening. She has her mask on in this video but removes it. White house Senior Communications adviser Ben Williamson responded on twitter that mcenany only answered two questions, was at the microphone for less than a minute, and was socially distanced from reporters, so there was no close contact as defined by cdc guidelines. Okay. Nerveracking. The white house, meanwhile, has decided not to Contact Trace the guests and Staff Members who were at the rose garden ceremony for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, where at least eight people may have become infected. According to the New York Times, the white house will simply notify people who came in close contact with the president two days prior to his positive test results on thursday. The rose garden was the previous saturday, more than two days before that. In addition, the centers for Disease Control and prevention has been removed from the process entirely, although the cdc has the most extensive resources for Contact Tracing. In response to questions from nbc news about the times report, the white house issued a statement that reads in part, the white house has a robust Contact Tracing program in place, led by the white house medical unit with cdc personnel and guidance. Contact tracing begins when someone tests positive or develops symptoms and goes back for 48 hours. Joining us now, Senior Writer at politico and cowriter of the playbook, jake sherman, also an msnbc contributor. Jake, good morning. I hardly know where to start this morning, which, unfortunately, is not an uncommon scenario when we cover the Trump Administration. But i suppose the thing that we should say or the thing we should focus on is the president telling people to not be afraid of coronavirus. I dont think anyone is arguing that we should be living our lives in a constant panic, but the number of people who have lost loved ones, the number, the sheer death toll, the anxiety that we all feel when people close to us do test positive, and so Many Americans now have been in that situation this seems like everyone was hoping the president would learn the opposite lesson of that. Yeah, thats right. Thanks for having me, kasie. Number one, there isnt anybody in the white house that i could find last night who didnt think almost every event yesterday was not a disaster. Everyone thought it was a disaster. Why did he go home . Why did he stage this kind of walk up to the top of the stairs and take your mask off situation . It befuddled almost everyone, especially when i mean, its difficult you did a good job of kind of saying how all these people in the white house had covid, but its really it goes beyond that. I mean, the entire press operation, pretty much besides one or two people, have contracted this virus. The president is leaving a worldclass hospital in which hes gotten basically every therapy under the sun, including many that are not available to just anybody, and he comes home to a house that has a Hospital Unit inside of it, and then tells a nation that has lost 200,000 people to not be afraid of a virus thats still rippling through communities. So, it just it defies logic. It doesnt make sense. You cant you know, it really undermines, kasie, what the white house says every day, which is were for masks, were for responsible behavior. And then the president makes a point of taking his mask off at the top of the stairs. So, its not a political statement here to just say its a ridiculous series of events, which no one can really explain. Yeah. Well, and the reality is, it really brought our governments functioning to a basic halt. Yes. In terms of you know, the president was in the hospital. The senate is still unable to vote on the floor because there are so many senators that have come down with this. The republicans in the senate are trying to force through the Amy Coney Barrett nomination. Meanwhile, americans are waiting for nancy pelosi and Steve Mnuchin to try to get something done. Do you think its at all possible that we might see a deal on Coronavirus Relief negotiations . I know you ran into ran into i know that you were chasing nancy pelosi in the capitol yesterday. What did she say about the state of play . She said that Steven Mnuchin shes going to have a conversation with Steven Mnuchin this morning. The talks are still ongoing. We put in playbook this morning that she told her Leadership Team theyre going very slowly, which is pelosi speak, perhaps, for just the pace of the negotiations are not to her liking, considering theyve been going on here for 12, 14, 16 weeks. Heres my question, kasie, and i dont think we know the answer to this if they come to a deal, is there going to be anyone there to vote on it . Is there going to be any time . If you are a 65yearold member of congress from somewhere west of the mississippi, would you get on a plane right now and come to a capitol thats been just almost not overridden, but pocked with this virus . I mean, especially with the election just weeks away. I dont understand why they would do that. Obviously, americans are hurting. They need relief. But this is just its just a really perilous situation right now. Yeah, i mean, its so important and its really hard in many ways to get your head around. I mean, at least the house, of course, has implemented proxy voting. They could potentially call their friend who represents the maryland district and vote. But for the senate, gathering those, many in their 70s or 80s, all on the senate floor when many of them have tested positive is really extremely risky. Jake, thank you, as always. Its great to see you. Thanks, kasie. Early in the morning. Well be looking out for playbook in a couple minutes. Another safety update ahead of tomorrows Vice President ial debate. The commission on president ial debates has approved plans for plexiglass to be used during the event. According to a source familiar with the matter, the request came from senator Kamala Harris team. Politico reports that Vice President mike pences campaign was opposed to it. Katie miller, a spokeswoman for pence, said on the record, if senator harris wants to use a fortress around herself, have at it. Miller, herself, tested positive for covid19 back in may. Meanwhile, Vice President joe bidens former chief of staff and white house Ebola Response coordinator ron klain responded on twitter the head of the White House Task force on covid should be busy getting plexiglass into countless workplaces and shops to keep workers and shoppers safe, not belittling its use. Thats where we are, folks. Still ahead, even though hes back at the white house, there are still looming questions about the president s health. All right, fine. In the other alds matchup out in l. A. , the astros carlos hit it while they rallied in the sixth inning to beat the as 105 in the series opener. Now for a double dose of monday night football, after sundays matchup between the patriots and chiefs was rescheduled to last night because new england quarterback cam newton and a member of the kansas city practice squad had tested positive for the coronavirus. To kansas city, where the patriots did not fair well without their starting qb against the defending champs, 2018 mvp Patrick Mahomes tossed two short touchdown passes in the game, while the chiefs defense did the rest of the work, including a 25yard pick six returned by safety Tyrann Mathieu in the Fourth Quarter to seal kansas citys 2610 victory. And out in green bay, packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers connected with tight end robert tonnan on three of his four touchdown passes in the game as green bay remains unbeaten after a 3016 victory over the winless atlanta falcons. It will grow on you. Maybe into this very important forecast for hurricane delta. We talked about this yesterday. This is going to be another problem storm, possibly louisiana again, for, like, the fifth time this hurricane season. So, the new update just in from the hurricane center. Winds are now up to 100 miles per hour. It is now a category 2. Its over some of the warmest water right now on the entire planet, and thats why its rapidly intensifying. And all thoughts right now are for our friends in cancun and near the cozumel area. They are expecting now to deal with a category 4 hurricane, a major hurricane, direct landfall, in roughly about 24 hours from now. So, thats a serious situation. Its happened v cancun area, but they are boarding up, getting people out of there. A very dangerous situation there for, you know, the resort areas there in northeast portions of mexi mexico. So, what happens after that . We do think the storm will slowly begin to weaken as it approaches the northern gulf coast. But if you go from a category 4 to a 3, thats still serious, maybe down to a category 2, hopefully. Thats still a serious concern. The area of uncertainty goes from pensacola back to the texas louisiana border. But as of now, its really louisiana. And you dont want to be on the right side of these storms, you know. Day three and day four airs are about 110 to 150 miles, so thats why were still saying anywhere from about houston to about mobile and pensacola, you need to keep an eye on this. And the recipe for strengthening is its over very warm water right now, and it looks like this storm, as we mentioned, kasie, heading directly towards cancun. Its even going to absorb what used to be gamma, and then eventually head to the northern gulf coast. A very serious storm friday nightsaturday morning. All right. Were thinking about everyone in the path of that storm. Bill karins, thank you very much, as always, my friend. Welcome back to way too early. It is really way too early for that. That was republican senator john kennedy yesterday, appearing to minimize the risk of coronavirus. Lets take a look at whats driving the day here in washington with those comments in mind. The senior senator from texas said monday that the president , quote, let his guard down when it came to the coronavirus. Republican senator john cornyn told the Houston Chronicle that the president s rhetoric has created, quote, confusion, as the country has struggled to get the pandemic under control. Cornyn went on to tell the chronicle editorial board, i think in his desire to try to demonstrate we are somehow coming out of this and that the danger is not still with us, i think he got out over his skis, and frankly, i think its a lesson to all of us that we need to exercise selfdiscipline. Those comments a sign that john cornyns looking around and seeing the reality and how much harder it is making it for him down in texas, of all places. Meanwhile, republican senator ron johnson, who has tested positive for coronavirus, says he will find a way to vote in person to confirm Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, even if he is still infected. And he also reflected on which quarantine model would have been best in the United States. If we have to go in and vote, ive already told leadership ill go in, in a moon suit. We think this is pretty important. What we really ought to do and ill still say it, and ill probably get beat up in the press for this we should have followed the sweden model. Isolate the sick, quarantine them, protect the vulnerable, and allow the rest of society to carry on with life as carefully as possible. A moon suit. Thats what he said. Okay. Still ahead here, what joe biden told florida voters last night about President Trumps coronavirus diagnosis. Plus, the World Health Organization now estimates 10 of the worlds population may have contracted the virus, this as parts of europe start imposing restrictions again. Welcome back to way too early its 5 30 on the east coast, 2 30 out west. I am kasie hunt. Well, President Trump is now back at the white house. Yesterday his doctor again evaded a number of questions about President Trumps health. The president s medical team said he would receive a fourth dose of the antiviral drug remdesivir before leaving Walter Reed Medical Center and a fifth one later today at the white house. They also said he would continue to take dexamethasone, a steroid that is used to treat severely ill covid19 patients. But dr. Sean conley wouldnt say when President Trump last tested negative for coronavirus and he also refused to answer a question about the president s lung scans. On testing, can you tell us when he had his last negative test . Was it thursday . Was it wednesday . Do you remember when he had his last negative test . I dont want to go backwards. Have you seen any evidence of pneumonia or inflammation in his lungs at all . So, weve done routine standard image iing. Im just not at liberty to discuss. So, youre actively not telling us what those lung scans showed, just to be clear . So, there are hipaa rules and regulations that restrict me in sharing certain things for his safety and his own health and reasons. Nbc News National political Reporter Josh Lederman later pointed out on twitter under hipaa, doctors can only disclose personal Health Information with a patients consent. This raises the prospect that trump told his doctors they could Share Positive news but not worrying news. All right. Last night during an nbc news town hall, joe biden said he wasnt surprised that President Trump caught the coronavirus. He also urged the president to send the right message to the American People on Wearing Masks and observing social distancing rules. I would hope that the president having gone through what he went through and im glad he seems to be coming along pretty well would communicate the right lesson to the American People masks matter. These masks, they matter. It matters. It saves lives. It prevents the spread of the disease. Social distancing. Instead of talking about what the only thing i heard was one of the tweets saying that, you know, dont be so concerned about all this, essentially. Joining me now, reporter for the washington post, eugene scott. Eugene, good morning. Its always great to see you. This, of course, a delicate subject. But because the president , at least, has certainly tried to make a show of saying that he is on the mend, returning to the white house, we turn abi to som questions here. I think many were hoping, certainly, that former Vice President joe biden said, essentially, he was hoping that the president would use this to send the right message to americans. Public Health Officials are urging all of us to always wear a mask, to socially distance, to not gather in large groups. But it doesnt seem as though President Trump is prepared to do that based on what we saw from the white house, where he immediately walked up those stairs and took off his mask for the cameras yesterday. What do you see as the next i mean, there are only there are fewer than 30 days until the election. What impact does this play and how do the next i mean, hell, lets just stick with the next three to seven days, because trying to project further out into the future just seems like a lost cause at this point, eugene. That is very true. But what we can expect from the president at this moment, most likely, is doubling down, as he always has done when pushed back against his words or actions that so Many Americans have found troublesome or even, in this case, harmful. The symbolism of him removing the mask after contracting an infection that likely could have been prevented, had he actually worn a mask and worn one more often, its meant to communicate that he actually is going to continue to do things his way. The problem with that, dr. Conley said he wants to remain, perhaps, private or, even worse, secretive, to ensure that the president is safe. People are asking questions of the president because the president doesnt only do like by himself. He interacts with so many people, including staffers at the white house, but also the american public. We know he attended multiple fundraisers and even rallies in the week before his diagnosis went public. So, theres real concern about whether or not his infection allowed him to infect other people. Right. Well, and we know, as he was as we were just watching him standing and saluting there next to you, that he was standing on that balcony while still infected with coronavirus, and presumably, still capable of passing it on to other people. You can see kind of his photographer in the background of some of those shots. Eugene, what does the president and you touched a little bit on this, but what obligation does he have to be more forthcoming about his medical records . I mean, as you point out, this is not hes not just any average citizen, although he is, of course, protected by our laws. That doesnt mean, though, that its not in the Public Interest for us to know whether or not hes healthy. There are hundreds of people who came in contact with the president in the past week, maybe thousands. When you think about the fundraisers and the Public Events and the debate, who have questions right now about their own health. You and i both know that there were other white house reporters who have been infected and who were close to staffers who went home to their families who now have some real concerns about just how long the president may have known what he knew. So, this is a public obligation to make this information as clear as possible. I know theres real concern amongst some in the white house that the president doesnt want to look weak, he doesnt want to look sick. If you recall the 2016 election, he gave his rival, hillary clinton, a very difficult time after she contracted pneumonia, making the argument that she was not up for the job. There must be some real fair among his team that that same argument could be made now, but thats not where the focus has to be. The focus has to be on the health of the American People. Were in a global pandemic. And these questions will continue to be asked until we get the answers that we believe are in the best interests of those who read and listen to us. Lets not forget, so many people Pay Attention to the president s behavior and model it, because in theory, our president s are supposed to be role models. The washington posts eugene scott. Thank you very much. Always great to see you. Thanks for getting up early with us. Still ahead here, weve got less than two months after it started to reopen, one major cinema is closing its doors again. Well tell you why, coming up next in the cooler. Way too early back in a moment. Ay too early back in a moment one day well look back and remember the moment that things, for one strange time in our lives, got very quiet. Some lost work and invented new ways to get by. Others were busier than ever, and found strength they never knew they had. We sheltered with the people who matter most, sometimes finding how far apart wed drifted. We worried over loved ones, over money, over our planet. And over takeout. And we found a voice one the noise out there had kept quiet. When the world starts spinning again, lets remember this time where none of us felt secure, and fight for a future where everyone can. Because when the world seems like its standing still. Thats the perfect time for us to change it. Regal cinemas announced yesterday its going to close all 536 locations temporarily, starting on october 8th. The decision comes amid the pandemic and as several upcoming blockbuster films have had their release dates pushed back. Roughly 40,000 employees face furloughs here in the u. S. In a statement, the ceo of cineworld, the Parent Company of regal, criticized the state of new york, which is the biggest movie market, saying in part, despite the fact that there has been no evidence to date linking any covid cases with cinemas, we have not been given a route to reopen in new york. The prolonged closures have had a detrimental impact. It is simply impossible to continue operations in our primary markets. A spokesman for new York Governor Andrew Cuomo had this response saying were moving heaven and earth trying to stop a second wave, and people have to acknowledge that were in a pandemic and start to act like it. We understand that some people are unhappy, but you know what . Better unhappy than sick or worse. While the closures are temporary, the company did not name a date for their reopening. Supreme court declined to hear the 2014 copyright case brought against led zeppelin over their 1971 megahit. That means led zeppelins victory from 2016 in the 9th Circuit Court of appeals holds. Stairway to heaven has long drawn comparisons to the song taurus written by randy wolf with the song sharing a similar chord progression, which you may be hearing, and bass line. The case, while very high profile, brought to light some of the most contested questions in music law today, including exactly whats covered by the registration documents of old songs and whether copyright can be claimed over common chord progressions or short sequences of notes. The ruling says that commonplace elements like those note sequences have minimal copyright claims and plaintiffs have to prove that the work in question is, quote, virtually identical to theirs. Nice way to start the morning, a little musical interlude here. Still ahead, weve got a look at the rest of the world and how theyre faring amid the pandemic. Meanwhile, in spain, authorities there moved to lock down the capital, madrid, imposing a ban on leaving the city. And is there a level of concern about the National Security implications of that as well . Sure. I think, obviously, the health of the president is really important to governments around the world. Everybody benefits from a stable, healthy president in the white house, no matter who is. The thing that i am hearing and the thing that i think is really on the lips of everybody here in europe is, when you look back over generations, post world war ii, right . The United States and western top public Health Officials around the world have always been in lockstep on national Public Health international Public Health emergencies. And so, they were really taken aback by the president coming out of the hospital and saying, dont worry about covid. Thats really opposite of the language that public Health Officials and National Leaders are trying to get people to understand here as we battle this new wave. Matt, to that very point and we saw boris johnson, obviously, who also was sidelined with coronavirus, come out of the hospital with a much different message, and in fact, sort of redirect some of the policies that he was following and underscoring in the wake of his own illness. Is there a sense that the u. S. Has permanently lost its position as global Public Health leader . I mean, i think all of us, certainly here in the u. S. , are pretty disappointed and flabbergasted that were not leading the world on this, because the assumption used to be that america would lead. Well, i mean, if you look at the raw numbers, were up there with brazil and india. And the language thats coming out of the white house is not in line with where the World Health Organization is. Were talking now about the United States pulling out of the World Health Organization at a time when most National Health excuse me, most international Health Officials would say its more important than ever to have a lockstep, unified approach to combating a pandemic. So, its certainly not where the United States has been on Public Health over many over generations and president s of both parties. You look at what president bush did on aids and look at the Ebola Response. Its been a its been a change. Its obviously a significant change. All right. The New York Times matt apuzzo, i hope to see you again soon. Earlier on in the show, we asked why are you awake . And you guys have some reporting about how others in the white house are reacting. I mean, so many people that work in that complex where he walked up and stood on the balcony, took off his mask. I mean, forget the political appointees and the people we see on camera every day. There are people cleaning the house, preparing the food. I mean, so many people with families who have got to be concerned about this. Thats exactly right, casey. Good morning. The headline says it all. This response from President Trump and his administration has been incredibly reckless in spite of having limitless resources at their fingertips. Let me read you a quote from the white house insider that reflects how people inside the white house are feeling right now. Quote its insane that he, President Trump, would return to the white house and jeopardize his Staffs Health when we are still learning of new cases among senior staff. The source went on to tell me that this place, meaning the white house, is a cesspool. The source later told me that they were concerned that President Trump was more concerned with preventing embarrassing stories about himself and they think hes rushing back to the white house in spite of the situation going on. But what really matters here, kasie, is exactly your point that the president s response which again is very reckless is putting so many other people in danger and were only seeing the tip of the iceberg with that. I mean what more do we know about how, you know the president has always prized loyalty over everything else. That was true in his private life. Its true since hes been the president. There are a core handful that have remained loyal to him throughout this administration, people like kellyanne conway. Shes now sick with coronavirus. At what point does he lose all of those people, perhaps that arent family members because hes putting them at Serious Health risk . You know, i think thats a big question that everyone is kind of thinking, you know, when people havent really ditched trump until now. Is this something that can change that . I think one aspect of the story that has the potential to do that is the lack of Contact Tracing. Because that suggests not just us trying to figure out who covered what, when, people have been loyal to him for years didnt get the same respect we think they would get. That is a huge risk when this is a viral contagious infection that people are figuring out how to deal with. Still figuring out how to get past and really information and transparency is the bare minimum in a situation like that. I dont see how they can trust President Trump in a moment like this. Lets talk for a second about the Vice President ial debate because we were talking earlier in the show and theres been reporting that the Harris Campaign on the democratic side they wanted plexiglas in between the two candidates and we have reported that that will in fact happen. But we also have reported that the Vice President s team didnt want that plexiglas. I guess im confused about this because when you have got the president of the United States with a disease that, you know, we still dont know that hes out of the woods here, i mean, he was obviously well enough to walk up those stairs but as we know this disease can take weeks if not months to ultimately play out all the way. That means that mike pences health and security and safety is of even more paramount than it would be under normal circumstances. Why say no to this . Look, they have been taking the opposite of where the public has stood largely on this issue throughout the entire thing. Vice president mike pences spokeswoman told axios and other reporters yesterday covering this they referred to as a plexiglas as a fortress around senator harris and made it sound like a diva move instead of a safety move especially considering the way that the Vice President has been exposed. But look, the Vice President is still in lock step with President Trump. Mike pence is not going to get up there and suddenly have a change of heart and say this is serious. Theyre going so far as to do that even after the president has contracted it himself. Yeah. I mean, im wondering how the day will play out, i think there will be so many questions especially for republicans but all lawmakers. People who we expect, leaders, to set examples and we already had john cornyn down in texas saying that the president was caught not prepared for this outbreak that we saw, dealing with the coronavirus broadly and that it has to be on the forefront of the minds of so many this morning. Thank you very much. Well all be reading axios a. M. In a little while and you can sign up at signup. Axios. Com. Thanks for getting up way too early on a tuesday morning. Morning joe starts right now. Im actually disturbed and concerned about the fact that our baseline of infections is still stuck at around 40,000 per day. Thats no place to be when youre trying to get your arms around an epidemic and get it to the very low baseline as you get into the situation where youre going to be indoors more than outdoors. We have to stop that
