>> no, that's going a little right. this is going at the bunker on the right. >> short of it, and in good shape. >> no. but it's a longer route than it will be interesting what that distance is from there. so i think now, you know, reavie can hit a good one down that slot, that power slot, roger. he'll have the advantage. >> the interesting thing is, johnny, that webb simpson hit a 3 wood there, so obviously must have thought about keeping it short of the bunker. >> this is a driver. >> going left a little or is it good? >> oh, should go down that key slot. >> he got it just inside the speed slot. that is really good. gives you a little extra roll and just a little below your feet and better angle. >> back right hole location. webb simpson, chez reavie. play on at the deutsche bank championship. second leg of the pga tour playoffs for the fedexcup deutsche bank championship tpc boston with a history of star-studded winners with some low rounds on the final day. chez reavie certainly snows superstar in the pga tour. on the back nine, got himself in position to win his second pga tour event. but webb simpson with a dutch birdie put at the 72nd hole made it a little tougher on reavie. cleared the green with his third and just barely missed a par putt that would have putt it away. so on to a playoff. simpson and reavie. in this continuation of the race for the fedexcup which concludes in atlanta a little bit later on this month. and simpson is away as they both played their tee shots in the fairway at the par 5 18th. double coverage. roger is with webb simpson. mack rolfing with chez reavie. >> webb simpson has 242 left to the hole. i don't like the angle as much from the right-hand side, as well, johnny, because it's easier to go through the green on the left-hand side playing from this angle. >> i agree. and easy to miss it along left. >> yeah, exactly. >> also from this distance you've got to make sure you hit it flush to get it over the hazard. >> 226 to carry in front of the green. >> this would be long hitting hybrids? >> this could be the cut through hybrid. >> probably the most nervous he's ever been right now. >> so this ball is going left of the green. that's not a good spot. looks like it went up against a clump, maybe. it's hard to tell from that far away. but that was predictable. i would have bet that's where he would hit it. and you can see, not in a clump. but it's long grass. so reavie's got a great chance, mark. >> he really does. what's the distance? >> you know what i mean? the wind's straight right-to-left at the moment. >> john, he's got 216 overall. 190 to cover. he has been guising sayward on our american flag on the crane about 80 feet above up there, and he has gone from the right slightly. not as strong as 20 minutes ago. he's going to hit a clutch shot. not like the last time. >> that's no gimme. but it's a lot better than webb's. >> that lie doesn't look great. >> no. >> but, see what happens between reavie and simpson after their second at the biggest pga tour wins of their career. good crowd on hand, tpc boston, watching the final two here in a playoff to determine the 2011 deutsche bank championship. and roger got a chance to scout out both reavie and simpson. who's got the advantage? >> no question it's chez reavie at this point. this is a bit of a downhill slope. the lie is not bad. clump in front of him. has about 20 yards to carry it to reach the green. i think he's going to have to hole up something along the lines of what he holed on the 52nd hole. on the other hand, reavie's got a little uphill lie. all he has to do is hit it in the air eight or ten feet and it's going to run towards the hole. >> he's been very successful, roger, with this open-faced sort of hit it behind it on purpose sand shot from the grass so this could come up short if he doesn't watch out. tough shot, tough to get the right distance. >> to the other side of the green. >> you're right, roger. so similar. >> that's the birdie putt that he made to get to the playoff. >> well, if you'd have looked at the whole pga tour year and you said, webb or chez would win more tournaments than tiger, phil, vijay, or who did i leave out there, phil, tiger or vijay, you'd be surprised. look at that shot there. he hits behind right there, and pretty good shot, i think, roger. i don't know what you thought of it. but he did what he should have done. >> yes. >> to get himself a putt. >> he's got the putt. he feels good mojo. >> mark, a good chance for reavie to get well inside of simpson? >> oh, definitely. he's got a very good chance. as roger said he only has to carry this ball about ten feet in the air. i think the one thing he wouldn't want to do would be to leave it right of the hole. i think anything from the left side of the hole would be an easier putt. >> very much on the upslope, this one. >> he isn't even going right. >> get in! >> good shot. very good shot. for reavie. short range for birdie. >> i think both of those shots were in the very good category. well done. >> it's been a big year for webb simpson. moved to charlotte. he saw his first child there in the arms of his wife dowd. won his first pga tour title in his home state, no less. trying to pick up his second win. which would put him on top of the fedexcup points list, with a win. so this is where we're headed. you know when you look at these young guys, the webb simpsons. dustin johnsons. names that just don't roll off the tongue like the tigers and the phils. >> the one difference between this putt and the other putt, i think, roger, is it's inside of the part that kicks it a little left. >> here's the putt that he made earlier. >> see how it's a little left right there and then comes back to the right. i don't know if he knows it's not going to kick left this time because he's just inside the kick left. so that's why, really, reavie missed it, because he didn't have that. so it breaks more than it looks, i think, to the right, roger, and maybe he knows. >> you may well be right. this is more hole high and a little bit closer than the putt he had on the 72nd hole. >> this is the 15 feet here. reavie's got a putt inside three feet. >> can he do it again, clutch birdie at 18. >> his caddie still behind pym. crowd reacts. what are you doing? >> faked him out. >> obviously not ready. >> in addition to the big year that he's had, already sewn up a presidents' cup spot, as well. and reavie after they started making noise said quiet down for this guy. he's getting himself ready to go. >> yes! another birdie! if this is the future of golf for the pga tour, i don't know how much clutch you can get than the 72nd hole and the first playoff hole than that. but if you've been watching all day long, simpson's done this all day long. putts he just drills. so that makes this 2'10" putt by mark reavie even testier. >> no doubt about it. i think it's just down the edge inside the hole. hit it firm. >> matching birdies on the first playoff hole. and how about webb simpson? that putt on the 72nd hole from 26 feet. that one 15 feet. the 41 feet for a couple of birdies that he's covered to keep this thing going. another look at this putt. the latest birdie. >> outside left, hilt beautifully. >> the crowd quieted down, and rose up. watching dowd's reaction all day. james is getting a ride, and doesn't like it. >> some babies don't like that loud noise. if they only knew. >> wanted the stuffed animal. >> so now they're going to go back to the 17th. >> you know, that just sort of shows the nature of that 6 that he made on the 72nd hole. how unusual that was. this has to make a par on this easy hole, but you got to hand it to them. they both make birdie there. >> good stuff. >> very nice. >> they're going back to the 397 yard 17th. >> yeah they're putting the flagstick back in the green. the greenskeeper and staff had taken the flagstick with them. >> look back -- >> but the second one, either. >> exactly right. >> if one has an advantage you have to say it would be chazz reavie. he's made two birdies and two pars in the four times he's played the hole whereas webb simpson has parred the hole each and every time. >> and reavie, by the way, is number one on the par 4s this week at minus eight. >> what do you think so far, gary? >> well, it's been great stuff. no question about it. much putting there by simpson on the 72nd green, and i think that first playoff hole. >> it's not a bunch of boring pars, is it? >> no, that's for sure. >> the 17th has played a little tougher today than it has earlier in the week. actually playing slightly over par for the round. only ten birdies recorded. >> got this hybrid club again, which is what he hit on the 71st hole and got it in that little saddle. played a very aggressive shot off the tee. i would think he'd try to go a little further right this time. well, this is going up the left side, but should be fine. very good. he's got the right stuff inside. it appears, gary. >> i think we've seen that earlier this year. johnny. coming down the stretch in greensboro, when he made a couple of clutch shots and a couple of good putts to claim this first victory. >> reavie not wasting any time, gary. that's a good one, here. the little hybrid club. and almost an identical shot. >> clutch putting has been the story that got chez reavie into this playoff. and it kept webb simpson's hopes alive. 72nd hole. first playoff hole. and then after a beautiful touch with his third, chez reavie matches him after the bogey got webb simpson into the playoff. webb on the mark again. chez reavie kept his chin up after that bogey in regulation. here we go to another one. ♪ ♪ [ male announcer ] welcome to the ultra life. ♪ where you never have to settle for less. ♪ with 95 calories, 2.6 carbs and one exceptionally smooth taste, michelob ultra is perfectly balanced for your life. first-ever playoff at the deutsche bank championships in the history of the fantastic labor day monday finishes. webb simpson, chez reavie, after matching birdies on the first playoff hole at the par 4 17th, and both in good shape over there, gary. >> they are, indeed. >> discussing the yardage with webb simpson. >> well, they have 135 yards actually. >> 130. >> and a shot played downhill slightly, gary. remember they came up on the front edge, earlier. the wind is blowing hard now. >> you think he'd be playing the full yardage, gary, a little bit into the wind. >> second shot, some 19 yards longer than he face d when it ws the 71st hole. . >> the wind has picked up a little bit here in the last 30 seconds or so. >> beautiful shot. a wonderful position to putt from. there's not much room left to the hole. but that leaves the uphill putt. >> chez reavie, now, gary, just three yards closer. 132 another good line in the fairway. >> well, pretty much made their decision easy. after watching that shot. he's got to go right at it. >> on the green but a long way from the hole. say advantage webb simpson. >> most of the fans in this area big patriot fans but super bowl champions are the green bay packers. they host the saints thursday. and then the sunday night football is cowboys and jets. bob kostis, football
